[upbeat music] Yeah. [laughs] [laughs] Damn. Okay. [laughs] Not playing around anymore. Not playing around. Hey, it's freaking 7:01 already. Gosh darn it. I'm late, sorry.
• 0:19
Hey, everybody, welcome to Radio Program. Got off to a rip roar and started [laughs] up right. [imitates engine revving] Show number 110 is gonna be a humdinger, apparently. Ooh. [laughs] Who says humdinger anymore?
• 0:31
You, apparently. I think that was one of my grandfather's things. Yeah. Uncle Joe. What the hell's a humdinger anyways? I, I don't know. Jesus. Don't be boonswaggled.
• 0:39
Hey, for, for frick and frack's sake, we're not- Cornswaddled... we're not even out of the intro tunage yet, and we already have a caller on the line. Come on. Welcome to the Radio Program, caller.
• 0:49
Who do we have on the line? Hey, good evening, guys. It's Al Roy from Ontario, Canada. Al Roy. Al Roy. Hey, we, we're not even through the intro music yet. You're just rip raring to go. How's it going? This is awesome.
• 1:01
Well, it's going great, and you know why? The reason I called in early w- because I know you guys have got Big Sexy coming up at the end, and I do not wanna step on his toes.
• 1:08
[laughs] So I thought I'd just quickly give you guys a quick buzz and, uh, just to say hello and catch up for a quick couple seconds, and then I'll jump off, and you guys can carry on doing your thing.
• 1:18
Well, let us know what's happening in Ontario. It's, well, [laughs]
• 1:24
I would love to have, tell you guys to come on up here and, you know, and, uh, I could host you guys up here, and you could ride our trails, and we could explore around, uh, bit of my, you know, backyard here.
• 1:35
But unfortunately, uh, as I understand it, the US has basically said- Nope... to Americans, "Don't bother going to Canada at the moment because we're struggling to get our COVID situation under control."
• 1:46
So, [laughs] so- Wow... we're, I mean, my family and people that I know are doing, doing as good as can be expected. We're not really in a hotspot or a, you know, a, a critical zone here or anything.
• 1:57
But, um, yeah, it's, I mean, it's a, it's a concern, and it's probably, it's getting better slowly, but it's at a snail's pace at the moment. What about vaccinations? Oh, that.
• 2:10
That's a, that's of curiosity, actually, because what's happening here... And I applaud you guys for, you know, at first Canada was saying, "Oh, look at the States.
• 2:18
They're doing the, you know, not getting this under control, or not, you, you know, taking care of business." And now, you know, pride cometh before a fall. And so- [laughs]...
• 2:27
we are, uh, we're suffering from the lack of vaccinations because unfortunately we don't have domestic, uh, production here.
• 2:34
And so we're kinda, it seems like, and this is only me talking, but it seems like they're, that we're sorta kinda begging for people just to give us enough to, to cover.
• 2:43
'Cause we're, I mean, in relation to you guys, we're 10% of your population, and we have, like, minimal amount of coverage right now at the moment. Mm-hmm. So we're really just trying to...
• 2:53
Every- everybody thinks that they should be the first one in line because everybody has a concern, and, you know, and I appreciate that, but th- in reality there's just not enough to go around.
• 3:01
And so, um, yeah, we're, we are, we are getting our first dose, and then
• 3:09
under I'm not sure whose recommendation, but they're going against the manufacturer, and they're actually just, uh, allowing us to span it four months. So you, you get your first one now, and four months from now- Oof.
• 3:19
Ugh... in August or, or whatever,
• 3:21
y- four months, which seems, I mean, I've never [laughs] in my limited, um, medical experience, when the back of the bottle of medicine that you're given from your pharmacy or doctor says, "Take this at the prescribed certain time frames," and then you just decide on your own to, "Ah, you know what?
• 3:40
I'm just gonna [laughs] do my own thing and sh- see how it all shakes out." And so [laughs] that seems to be what we're doing, and I, [laughs] I guess we'll see at the end.
• 3:48
Uh, come around Christmas, maybe I'll phone you guys again and tell you whether, A, it worked, or, [laughs] maybe it didn't- [laughs]... and, and, uh, we're worse off. I don't know.
• 3:56
But, um, yeah, it's really kind of a gamble right now up here. So- That's, that's not too bad... I mean, I am eligible to get my vaccine. Yeah. Congratulations. But, uh, yeah. You know what?
• 4:07
I'm really, I was really holding out, 'cause so the Johnson & Johnson is a one-shot deal. Yeah. And I'm kinda hoping that that migrates up this way because that's sorta where I'm at.
• 4:17
Because I would just love to take the thing one shot and be done and over with, and whether or not it's 80% effective or 60 or 70% effective, I'm just so tired- 72, I believe is the number...
• 4:27
of this nonsense that I'm pretty much- Um, I thought it was actually closer to the 60 percentile for that specific- Yeah. Whatever. 70, 70- Whatever. It's better than nothing... I'll, I'll go with 72- Exactly...
• 4:33
because I have the J&J- 70... and I was born in '72. Oh. So 72 is gonna be- That's, that's a little bit of both. Yeah, in my, in- Well...
• 4:40
in the world that I'm the ruler of [laughs] Well, is it ba- is it back available here now? 'Cause they- Yeah, they listed it again... pu- they punted it for a few weeks or a week or whatever. They listed it again.
• 4:47
Yeah, the day I got mine is when the, the- But that's probably now why you called in... news came out. I'm like, "Dude, for real? Give me a break." It's the, the all vaccine show here. Yeah. Yes. Full spectrum cycle.
• 4:55
So what have you been riding? What you been doing? Yeah, [laughs]
• 4:58
it seems like we've been, we've been talking the, since w- since I called in the first time when this all started last, I, oh, I would think probably last March sometime, it feels like that's what we talk about.
• 5:07
And, and it's true, it seems to be on everybody's mind, and that's all you read in the newspaper now, so unfortunately. But, um- Well-...
• 5:12
you know, what you guys do, I appreciate you guys talking about bikes and, and other stuff, too, as well. It keeps me entertained, and I, I look forward to the show every week, so. Excellent. And we have one,
• 5:22
count him one, fan. Thank you, Al Roy. [laughs] What you drinking? Well,
• 5:28
now, when I do look at the website, when I look at fatbike.com, and I look at it every day, I check it out, I read on it, and, uh, I notice the comments section.
• 5:35
So I'm not sure if fat bikers by nature are either shy or lazy because [laughs] you know- Or both... so there's not too many people that make comments on the website.
• 5:45
And I'm thinking, well, there's something purely interesting to read here about whatever happens to be that Gomez puts up there, and it's, to me, it's very interesting. So I may throw a comment out there.
• 5:53
Whether it's well-received or not, I don't know. But, but, um, I notice a lot of people don't do that, and so I, I don't know whether it's just- Lack of motivation or [laughs] more important things to do.
• 6:03
I'm not really sure. But I do enjoy the website and I enjoy the show immensely, so. Well, thanks very much. Well, yeah, I'll start trolling you now. [laughs] You know, now that, now that you're out there.
• 6:10
I, I, I got an account out there, so I'll, you know, I'll, I'll start trolling you, just see if I can rattle your rouse a little bit and, you know, let's- Y-...
• 6:16
let's, let's get some, some good dialogue going on [laughs] The whole deal right now is he doesn't even know who you are. I know. Well- Perfect... but, but yeah But he's gonna know in a few minutes. Right? So- Yeah.
• 6:26
That's- Yeah. Uh, all right... that's my mission... uh, be- besides Swen here, we got, uh, we got JK and, and Tony as normal, but we also have JT in the house, Mr. John Trusty. Well- Thank you very much... howdy, sir...
• 6:37
it's, it's great. You guys have a... You know, I would love to come down and visit in person because I would g- Well...
• 6:42
I would definitely bring you guys, uh, some beer from here that we have, and, uh, I'm sure you would enjoy it. And I know some of the beers you've described on, on air, and it's, and I, um- We don't drink beer here...
• 6:51
and I wish we could get them here. We can't, unfortunately. But we do have some interesting ones here that I'd love to just drop by and...
• 6:58
It's a bit of a hike, but I mean, you know, hey, when you get a vacation or you get some time- We'll take care of you... I can definitely Yeah, we're not going anywhere, and there's- Yeah. We'll-...
• 7:04
stuff, you know, stuff will start to open up here I think in Milwaukee midsummer. We're really, I'm really hoping to get Steel Is Real in September to be a, a pretty- Yeah... more traditional event, so you know. Yeah.
• 7:17
Kinda shoot for that, that timeline. But, uh- I mean, how far is it really from there? And we still have the route. [laughs] Yeah. We did the route last year, but it got usurped by the usurper, so- [laughs]...
• 7:26
we can do the same route we were gonna do last year. Exactly. [laughs] But the first thing, of course, is, you know, you have to go back into that, uh, that whole Douglas Adams thing.
• 7:33
It's like, first rule, don't panic, [laughs] you know? I mean- Right... things are hard.
• 7:38
Things are definitely gonna be, like, a little bit rough for, for some time to come here, and, um, I'm a- I'm a- actually thinking it'll probably actually start smoothing out within the next two years or so once, you know, productions across the, across the globe are, are really up and running.
• 7:51
Well, you're talking bikes. I'm just talking events. [laughs] I'm talking bikes. I'm ta- I, I am, and I'm also talking the drugs, man.
• 7:56
I'm also talking the drugs, and not, not necessarily all those, uh, you know, those THC-bearing drugs or- [laughs]...
• 8:01
anything like that, but, like, also the, the vaccines, like, once that actually starts really kicking up, you know, globally. So how far exactly is Ontario from here? It's about, what, 10 hours, you think?
• 8:14
Yeah, I think so. If we could shoot straight across the lake there, I think we could be in a lot... If there was some sort of, if there was a boat or- A ferry, yeah... a ferry, we could probably cut the time in half.
• 8:22
But I mean, yeah, it's, uh, probably about a 10-hour drive if you... Yeah, it's about a 10-hour drive from here to you guys, yeah. No, some of my BMX friends did, uh, some video shoots up in Ontario and- Yeah...
• 8:32
so I mean... So for, um, for everyone who didn't get one, I would like to make a, a Lake Express shout-out. For a donation to our local Dream Bikes, uh, make people,
• 8:46
bike people that wouldn't normally be bike people sort of... What, how would you describe it? [laughs] Make their bike dreams come true. Make their... It's- Yeah. See? But it's to, to, it's to help- Sure...
• 8:54
you know, basically disadvantaged or inner city kids learn something other than what they might do on the streets and- Yeah... give them something to- How to run a business... figure out. But anyway- Fix a bike...
• 9:04
Lake Express gave us a round-trip ticket across the lake on the Lake Express Ferry for a donation of $75 to Dream Bikes, which was 100 bucks off the normal 175 round trip. Yeah. Because this year the amount of...
• 9:21
Usually they'll get 500, 600 bikes donated, and they give a voucher for giving a bike to give to kids. This year there was not the participation, so we- Right... had a different way to make it work. Yeah.
• 9:32
So that goes from, uh- Speaking of ferries... Muskegon to Milwaukee. So if you drop straight down through Michigan and bop across Lake Michigan, eh, might save you, uh, three hours around Chicago.
• 9:42
Well, and it al- Or one... it also prevents you from- Yeah. No, absolutely... having to drive through Indiana. Oh, yeah. True that. It prevents you from having to drive through Indiana. Yeah. So. And Chicago.
• 9:49
[laughs] Both good things. The Skyway, though, I love the Skyway. Ah, it's not bad. So all right, are you getting some riding in even though you're, uh, not having Americans up there? Yes.
• 10:00
Actually, as a matter of fact, uh, I've done more, more riding than, than, uh, than normal I think.
• 10:04
Um, I know you guys love this, uh, Canadian to American conversion, so I'll, so it's, I've almost done 500 kilometers, which is 300 miles this month alone. [laughs] Wow, that's- Just biking back and forth- Awesome...
• 10:14
and kind of exploding, you know, so just kind of exploring around and just kind of checking different local stuff out and getting back and forth to work, which is the weather has cooperated quite nicely.
• 10:24
It's been, it's been- [laughs]... a really dreamy spring. So, um, yeah, dry and, and fairly, um, you know, w- not w- like warm warm, but, you know, warm enough where you don't have to dress up like a snowman.
• 10:35
It's, so it's been good. Yeah. It's been a good, uh- Perfect... good spring. Perfect. Right on. It's perfect for me. Have you noticed more people out there? Yes, I have, actually.
• 10:44
It's, um, it's been very c- what I would call, like, crowded on the, on the trails around the, uh, the neighborhood here, where people are just getting out, and it's nice to see.
• 10:52
People are, seem to be enjoying getting out and getting the fresh air, and I think a lot of people haven't... You know, when you, when s- there's something interesting in your own hometown, people don't always go there.
• 11:02
They, they either take people that come in from out of town to s- and that's the first time they've been there too, so everybody's kind of excited to see it.
• 11:07
But, and so that's the way it is around here, where we have 50 kilometers or 30 miles of trails, and nobody seems- Mm-hmm...
• 11:13
they kinda know where it is, but they don't, they don't, they don't have any reason to get out there 'cause they don't have any time.
• 11:17
And now everybody's got all the kinds of time on their hands, so everybody's, everybody's moving around, and it, it's good. Yeah. Nice. I agree. People seem excited about it, and they, they're happy to be out. So.
• 11:26
That sounds fantastic. Yeah. Um- Yeah... but what are you drinking? Oh, yeah, that's, that's gonna be... That's, this is great. Good, good question. Um, it's from Toronto. It's a, um,
• 11:41
Amsterdam beer, and it's called The Bone Shaker. Mm-hmm. It's an unfiltered India pale ale. Mm-hmm.
• 11:47
So it's kinda combo, but it's got a skeleton on the label and an old style bone shaker bicycle on the- [laughs] I like it... it is 7.1- Mm. [laughs] Ooh... ABV. Wow. We, we used to have- That's bigger...
• 11:58
we, we used to have a local race team called The Bone Shakers team- Mm-hmm... back in the old days, mountain bike race team out of, uh- Bike Smiths, right? Uh, I think that was Bike Smiths, yeah...
• 12:07
yeah, Bike Smiths, yeah. One of the local- It's also a tandem- I th- actually, I have a Bone Shaker jersey from somewhere. We al- we- Also a tandem-...
• 12:13
obviously always called the team the Shake Boners, of course [laughs] They were also a tandem- Being childish people that we are [laughs]... Riverwest 24 team, too, Bone Shakers Oh, yeah, nice.
• 12:22
Well, when you come down- If, if you look up, if you look up-... bring, bring us some of that beer. And I also hear- I will, absolutely. They're actually- I also hear you got- Amsterdam does a good job.
• 12:29
They actually have about four bicycle-themed beers, so I, you know, so if you look up Amsterdam Brewery in, in Toronto, uh, Ontario, that you'll see the, the different logos and labels and stuff, and it w- it, it might be kinda interesting.
• 12:41
So yeah, so when I, when I do g- get a chance to stop down there, I'm gonna make my best efforts, and I'll let you guys know when that's gonna happen. Excellent. Perfect. All right, man.
• 12:49
Well, thanks very much for giving us a, a, a, a, an update on the Toronto scene, and, uh, it's always good to hear from you. And thank God you called in, 'cause I don't think- Great talking-...
• 12:59
this show would've done much if you hadn't, so. [laughs] Yeah, we, we had to focus for a second on somebody else.
• 13:04
[laughs] You guys always say that, and I'm telling you right now, it's entertaining, it's helpless to listen to yous, and I, and I, so, um, yeah, just have a great rest of the show, and I will, I'll check out. Thanks.
• 13:15
All right, thanks. Thanks. Thanks, mate. All right, everybody, Toronto. This is awesome. Thank you. Thanks, guys. Have a good- Come again... and have a great night. All right, bye. Bye bye.
• 13:22
Speaking of other people, by gosh, that actually said they sort of enjoy our show, S- Spinner stopped through the shop the other day. Oh, Spinner.
• 13:30
Yeah, he was looking at some, yeah, some kind of, I don't know what he called it, end of times or post apo- apocalyptic vehicle here in Milwaukee, some kinda, like, Expedition with a diesel or something.
• 13:41
He's like, "I really want one of those things." Those are pretty badass. So he was, uh, he was through here, and we went up to the new space and gave him a tour- Nice...
• 13:48
of the whole facility up there, and it was good to see him, and by, I'm gonna go to Decor in two weeks, so- [laughs] Yeah... I guess we'll see him again. See him again. Hopefully.
• 13:57
Yeah, Spinner's a, a good egg, a good egg. Yes, yes, he is. Uh, JT, what have you been up to? Uh, well, um- Winding down on the work... [laughs] winding down, yeah.
• 14:10
We're going to the, uh, the, the final three weeks of my time with the motor company here in town, and
• 14:17
it's going to be kind of a, a, a happy sadness, if you will, because I will, I'll, I'll be happy that things are changing, and I'll be sad that things are changing, and especially those paychecks are changing, so- Yeah.
• 14:27
So you've been training your replacement for how long now? Uh, four weeks. [laughs] Heard that guy's an asshole. Eh, he's not that much of an asshole. I understand. Yeah, right. Have you cup checked him lately?
• 14:36
[laughs] Gave him a nice, hard punch in the arm. No, that, that is not a COVID-acceptable behavior. Oh, that's true. You know, we do have to keep the, the six-feet- Long pole, man.
• 14:44
[laughs] As soon as I get a fork leg long enough, that, then we're good. [laughs] But, um, no, just, um, planning now for the future, if you will, and investing what I can, like, for, uh, well,
• 15:00
for future ideas that I don't wanna get into right now, but- [laughs] Does it involve a welder? It may. [laughs] It may. That's a distinct possibility. That's a distinct possibility. All right.
• 15:12
Uh- Well, this is an opportunity, I think, to refocus and kinda get where you, you wanna get, so I think it's a good thing.
• 15:17
Oh, I, I'm actually, it's going to be the first time in my life that I've ever been on any form of unemployment over summer- Ah...
• 15:26
and so I'm going to take this as the opportunity to, well, take it as learn unemployment as well as- Nice... fun employment. So- I like these ideas.
• 15:33
Yeah, except for the COVID thing, I haven't been on unemployment since 1999. Yeah, I mean, that didn't count, you know, of c- you know, that, yeah- Yeah... shutdown, that really didn't count. Right. That doesn't count.
• 15:42
  Yeah. Well, I- 2000... I don't know.
• 15:45
You know, besides the fact that the bike shop has been, you know, pretty slim pickings and it doesn't pay me anything, you know, our, my real job went away, and our, the, out of the 18,000 people that were there, three of them got called back recently.
• 16:01
[laughs] [laughs] So I, I don't feel, I don't feel bad about, uh, trying to keep my life going forward and doing some new things on, at the back of our, um, unemployment insurance plan. Right. You know?
• 16:17
Uh, what else we got going on? Hey, h- have you guys been riding around the neighborhood? I, I noticed a couple things I don't normally notice, and I don't know why I've never noticed this thing on Holton.
• 16:26
There's, like, a large, gigantic black house. It's, like, totally black. Yeah, yeah, with the big tree in front of it. Yeah, but it, I never noticed it before. Yeah. I don't know why.
• 16:34
Maybe 'cause the tree blocks it coming from the south or something. It's, it's pretty hard to see. It looks like an Addams Family kinda house. Yeah, that's up, yeah, it was on the west side- Yeah.
• 16:41
I was like, "What is that thing?" [laughs]... next to the Jazz Estate or whatever that was, that old building. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, I, I've- No, that wasn't the Estate. That was, uh, uh- Jazz Oasis? Something.
• 16:49
Yeah, that was Jazz Oasis. It was a Blues Oasis. That was, that was the, uh, that was the underage bar for a long time. Maybe that's why the house was black, so nobody would notice what's going on in there.
• 16:58
[laughs] It is, there, I mean, there was a guy with a crane to redo all the panes in the third story up there, and it took him, like, I'm not exaggerating, like, six months that crane was parked out front of that place.
• 17:11
That is a large house. And, like, it's a large house, but it was, like, 12 panes. [laughs] I mean- Yeah... it should've been a couple of weekends. [laughs] And I, and that's coming from me, who- Yeah... you know- No...
• 17:21
I'm still working on a house after three years. Yeah, see. Yeah. Yeah. All right, so, so if anybody's in the Riverwest neighborhood and they're looking for... Oh, of course, JT will take a beer.
• 17:31
If anybody's looking for a job, I have an interesting one for you over at Tracks Tavern. Yeah? Kitchen referee. Hmm. Now, maybe it's kitchen/referee, which means maybe they need both. Hmm. Hmm.
• 17:44
But I'm like, if you had a job as a kitchen referee, don't you think that would be fun? [laughs] Like, you're in there with Guy Ferrari or something or whatever his face is and- He's, like, blocking people. I've met him.
• 17:53
Yeah. Uh- Oh, good... like, blocking people and stuff, yeah. Um- Um, yeah, that'd be nice... so, so, so there's that over at Tracks, and then there's a taco truck in front of Bliffert. Yeah, I saw that the other day.
• 18:05
[laughs] It's like, what? This neighborhood is getting crazy with, with the food trucks and whatnot. Which, which truck? Which truck? It's, I don't- Yeah... I didn't notice this last time. Uh, not Tac. Yeah.
• 18:14
I don't, I don't remember the name. Tapatio? No. Damn. Not. I think it started with a P. [laughs] It's a nondescript truck. It's a- No, I did notice- Well, I don't mind going by, by Lakefront, but- It's a beer dude...
• 18:23
I did notice while, while purchasing my greenies, which are not what you think they are at all, um, that all- Personal... the Blifferd guys were buying tacos from the truck, so they must be okay. Well, it's right there.
• 18:36
Well- Right... it's, it's probably the best tacos that they have within a block radius. Probably. Well, Corazon- Corazon is right there. Well, it's three blocks. Yeah. Oh.
• 18:45
[laughs] [bell ringing] Ooh, look what happened there. Well, thank God we're at the top of the hill. Top of the hill. We're solid- It is three... It's a solid three blocks- All right... to Corazon, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah.
• 18:53
Something like that. Yep. Um, well, the fridge keeps giving and, and this is- Keep drinking... still Tony's Lagunitas from I don't know how many beers are in that thing, but- Three weeks. A case...
• 19:01
been three weeks worth of, uh, this is- We don't have JK partaking with us... India pale ale just- Right? [laughs]... melting in my face. It's coming up next weekend, brother.
• 19:08
May the fifth be day you start drinking beer. Well- Well, the... Isn't May the fourth coming up, too, do you feel? It's on a Wednesday. Oh, that- May the fourth be with you... is that an NA, JK? Yes, it is. Wow.
• 19:20
Wow, I hadn't seen that one. I thought you were not on the Athletic Brewing Company thing. Oh, yeah, for sure. Oh, okay. Well. I'm just impressed that... I mean, because I've bought Athletic- It's Free Wave-...
• 19:28
Brewing a couple of times and-... Hazy IPA... every time I've bought it, it's you open the can over the sink because it just explodes all over the sink. I've- Oh, yeah... heard that about their beers.
• 19:36
[laughs] Find them or a little explosive. Many of, many of them are fermenting past their fermentation. They're, they're doing something. I'm not sure how they're- [laughs]... how they're making it.
• 19:46
It's the fruit that they're putting in them is... It's doing a lot of it, the- Well, I, I was buying stuff that didn't have fruit in it. Mm. So it's whatever the- Mm... yeast that they were using or- Mm-hmm...
• 19:54
it can't be just the fact that they're just bottling at sea level and coming up to 700 feet and walking. No. No. Nah. [laughs] This is mostly sea level. Yeah, yeah. Hey, look at... Hey, hey, I'm gonna push...
• 20:03
Hey, look at this. I'm pushing the button. Hey, well, hey, hey, welcome to radio program caller. Who do we have on the line? Hello. [laughs] Oh. Just... So that sounds a lot- How are, how are you all doing?
• 20:16
That sounds a lot like Big Sexy to me. We are doing- It is... You know, we were warned you'd call by- I've been-... by Ulroy from up in Canada. He's like, "I had to call early because I know- Yeah...
• 20:26
you guys are getting Big Sexy and he's gonna steal the show, so I'm gonna, I'm gonna call in early." Put you on. Yeah. [laughs] Come on, man. I don't... I'm not... I ain't trying to steal no show.
• 20:36
I'm just trying to be, uh, who I am, and I'm in Virginia Beach. Mm. Nice. And I got myself a- Beautiful spot... I got a, I got myself a g- a ghetto ass hotel room and, uh, and I, I, I can see the ocean. There you go.
• 20:52
I had to, I had to, I, I had to poke my head up so I could see the ocean, but- Very nice. That... JK does- Well, yeah. No, no... Virginia Beach. You, you could probably- It's cool...
• 21:01
get some, uh, get some places to go from, uh- It's-... JK here since he goes every summer that way. Did, did, did anybody, did anybody see the picture this morning? I said, "This is how I'm starting my morning."
• 21:13
Oh, I saw some lean-ons. Um- On I mean shut up. It was on Facebook. [laughs] I, I put it on Facebook. I said, "This is how I'm starting my morning."
• 21:20
And it was, uh, Heather on the bow of the ferry where it had to cross the- Nice... across the sound, and the sun was coming up. Oh my God, it was amazing. Oh, yeah. I did see that one. It was really cool. And then, uh,
• 21:36
um, I ended up on dump truck alley for some reason. [laughs] That sounds terrible. Like these, these, these red and white dump trucks just kept on flying past me. I'm like, "Well, what the fuck's going on here?"
• 21:50
You know? And it, it says, it, it says like... Uh, there's signs that says it's a bike route, and these dump trucks are flying past me and I'm like, "Okay, so is this a dump truck route or a bike route?
• 22:06
Make up your fucking mind, man." Well, did you find out what the dump trucks were doing? Well, it w- well, no, I have no idea.
• 22:14
But, um, but, um, as I made my way to Virginia Beach, it, um, the dump trucks seemed to disappear. Because, you know, it's, it... I mean, Virginia Beach is a pretty big city. Oh, yeah. Sprawling.
• 22:28
I mean, a- and so- Fast... as I made my way into the metro area, it... The, the dump trucks seemed to disappear and, and then, uh, so I... And, oh, my God, it is not too bad on the eyes around here- [laughs]...
• 22:43
baby, I tell you what. What kind of weather you got there in Virginia- I mean-... City Beach, Phil? Um, uh, uh, low 80s to the high, uh, low, uh, mid to low 60s for the low. Oh, man. Man, we're waiting for that here.
• 22:58
I feel so sorry for you. Yeah. Not, not, not bad, not bad at all. No- nothing that makes me want to go head first in the Atlantic Ocean, but at the same time...
• 23:08
But yeah, I got, um, I got some dudes, they're heading up my way and, um, I gotta go do some laundry tomorrow. And, uh, I got my room here in Virginia Beach for two nights and I'm, uh, I'm just gonna, um- Nice...
• 23:21
I, like I told, I told you last time, I gotta slow down a little bit. I'm gonna give the kid 12 way too early if I fucking, if I keep on going the way I'm going, so.
• 23:30
[laughs] Well, gotta just get to Michigan by the end of July, dude. Yep. Any- Uh, uh, no, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, um, that, that is, that is the goal. That is the goal. Um, I, I, I can't give you a certain date.
• 23:44
No, that's okay. But, but, um, I am, um, I'm, um, and, and Dave, David said something like he's going to Niagara Falls for like, uh, my birthday weekend, but I don't...
• 23:57
I do not in- I intend to be way past Milwaukee by my birthday weekend, so- When's that?... we'll be all right. Uh, my, my birthday is August 5th. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 24:09
Um, so I'll, I, I mean, I wanna be in Merrill, I wanna be in Merrill, Wisconsin by then. Um, so let, let... we got... We... I mean, you know- I can, I can pump it, I can pump it or slow down or whatever, you know.
• 24:24
We'll, we'll figure it all out. I mean, I, I really hope that, that, um, it...
• 24:29
I mean, I really appreciate the ticket and all that, but I really, I hope, you know, if, if something happens and I get a big delay, I'm, I'm sorry, but- [laughs] If that happens, it happens.
• 24:40
So I, I, uh, I don't think our listeners know, but, uh, we talked a little bit earlier before you called in about the Lake Express thing that, that get the ticket, and I- Yeah...
• 24:50
I'm pretty sure Tony picked up a ticket for you. I did. Yeah. That, that's awesome. That's... I, I, I really appreciate that, like I said. But I mean, like, but, like, what if,
• 25:01
what if I, um, end up getting a two-week- Well, then you do... weather delay or, uh- Don't worry about it... you know? Yeah. It- It's open-ended... well, basically- It's open-ended...
• 25:08
yeah, right now it's- If that happens, I'll find someone else to take that trip and- Right... and we'll drink without you. Right, right. And we're gonna drink a lot of Jagermeister. But it's only a voucher right now.
• 25:16
Right. It's not an actual ticket yet. [laughs] Right. So as you get closer- Oh, okay... we'll, we'll dial in the date. Yeah, yeah. Okay.
• 25:22
Um, also- That, that, that, that's the thing, like, like, like I don't, I don't wanna, um, I don't wanna schedule it for a certain date 'cause I, I can't, I can't guarantee that- Oh... at the, at the moment.
• 25:32
No one would expect you to at this point. Right, right. So you said, you said you're going to Merrill, right, in, at some point in Wisconsin here? Yep, yep.
• 25:40
I'm, um, after, after we, after we cross Lake Michigan and hang out in Milwaukee and, uh, I trash your studio and everything's fine, um, then, uh- We'll be in the new one by then... then, uh- He can trash the old one.
• 25:54
[laughs] Well, I, I, I also, I also gotta, uh, I, I gotta, I gotta, uh, see Greg and Carrie too. Right on. So, uh- Um, it's-...
• 26:04
oddly enough, I was just, I was looking on Zillow the other day at, at, at places up in Merrill. I'm like, "Someday I'm gonna retire up Northern Wisconsin." I'm like, "Merrill looks like a very nice place." Uh-huh.
• 26:14
I don't know anything about it, but- It's cheap, isn't it? That's what I'm looking for- I lo-... inexpensive. I wanna sell high and buy low, you know. I- It's like...
• 26:20
I almo- I almost made it a year in Merrill, and I, and, and, um, and some shit happened, some drama, blah, blah, blah, so I had to leave. But, um, I really liked Merrill. Merrill's a, Merrill's a dec- decent little town.
• 26:34
And, uh, um, I found, um, the only thing I found that wasn't, that wasn't okay was the ride from Merrill to Medford was just brutal. So I think I'm gonna get a ride from Merrill to Medford.
• 26:50
From just a car-on-road perspective? Or what, what was made it brutal? No, no, it, it, it was, it was, it was kinda, it was like, it was like flat,
• 27:00
but it was kinda uphill, and it was wide open, so the wind was fucking with me and all that, you know? Mm-hmm.
• 27:08
And, and it wa- it was just, it was just, it, and it was just like there was, there's nothing between Merrill and Medford. But then once you get to Medford, you go, you go down to Chippewa Falls and blah, blah, you know.
• 27:21
It, it, it, it, it, it opens up into this bike path and, and it's kind of a downhill lie, blah, blah, blah. But, um, but yeah, between Merrill and Medford was just awful.
• 27:31
So I'm, I think I'm just gonna pay somebody to drive me to Medford. Right on. All right, well, leave us with a- I mean-...
• 27:39
leave us with a closing thought, 'cause we're gonna wrap this puppy up and, uh, head down the trail. Right on. Um, I'll, I'll tell you what, don't ever underestimate the wind. I, I swear to God- [laughs]...
• 27:54
the wind, the wind- Preach to the choir. I mean, y'all, y'all might have your, y'all might have your bikes and your aerodynamic helmets and shit like that, but I don't.
• 28:04
[laughs] So every, every time, every time the, the, the, this windy road that I was on earlier winds to the west, I was fighting the wind for a half a mile, and then, then the wind would carry me for a half a mile.
• 28:17
Then I had to go back to the west again, like, "Goddamn it." Well, I mean, it's, it's all about- So, like-... the balance of forces, man. It's like you can't have an action without a reaction- Yeah... right? You know?
• 28:25
I mean- Right. Was that, was that Sir Isaac Newton came up with that one? Yeah, you know, maybe. Yeah, it's, uh- But it's- Oh, my God, an apple dropped on my head. What the hell is going on here?
• 28:36
[laughs] Freaking frack apples. All right, Big Sexy. Anyway. Good hearing from you, brother. Good to talk to you guys. Enjoy- And, uh, um, uh-... Virginia Beach... I'll ri- I'll, I'll ride out to you next week.
• 28:47
All right, man. Sounds great. Later for you. Right on. See you guys. Thank you so much. Yep. Peace. So, Big Sexy, ladies and gentlemen.
• 28:56
Uh, speaking of guests who are gonna hopefully be on the show within the next week or two, I talked to Chris from Psychic Derailer down in Indy today. Hmm.
• 29:06
Uh, if you guys don't follow him on YouTube or read his blog posts, he's, he's been in the bike biz for a long time and
• 29:12
r- ran one of the biggest shops down there in Indy, and got out of it, and is now doing his own small- He's a great call-in, man. Yeah, he's a- He's a great call-in... he, he, he's a, uh, he's a lot like us, I think.
• 29:22
Well- Likes good music, reads good books, does a few bike things, and tries not to make too many waves, you know? I'd like to talk to this cat. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 29:31
So we're gonna try and get him on the show either next week or week after. I don't...
• 29:34
Whenever he has time, but, uh, we had, we had a good chat today until a, a nice young lady walked in with a flat tire, and I had to s- help her out with her bicycle. Oh, that'll happen. [laughs] Amongst other things.
• 29:46
Was it Madison? No, it was, it was whatever that Raleigh is over there. Oh, okay. All right. Alyse. Yeah, there we go. Um- Right, right...
• 29:53
H- John, have you seen this thing, uh, Shimano's doing with their 300% longer life expectancy on their new drivetrain? Oh, yes. I, I- Give me a, give me an opinion on that crackamamy scheme. I am, I...
• 30:05
When it comes to bike industry stuff, I am very much of the mindset that there should be, before you start taking informative opinions on it, there's, you have to take a wait and see.
• 30:16
Because if, I mean, I, I think it's weird that they're doing it on HG body rather than going with their Micro Spline platform with HG+. I think that's a little bit odd, because I think the, the Micro Spline+
• 30:30
Freehub body actually makes a lot more sense from a load-bearing perspective. We will get into that at some other point in time if anybody wants to, but not now.
• 30:37
However- This, what was that, what was that show that used to be on Fat Bike Radio that those guys haven't done for a while? Fat Camp or something? They got all technical. Oh, yeah.
• 30:45
I was just getting- I like those guys... technical. [laughs] No, I, I- Technical is good...
• 30:48
I am curious because it's like, yes, I, I can, I can see exactly what they're shooting for, and it's definitely an e-bi- e-bike market item. Mm-hmm.
• 30:56
And I think that's really a cross-compatible e-bike, you know, from mountain bike as well as to, you know, cargo bikes. I think this makes a lot of sense.
• 31:05
What they're saying about, you know, the, the shift pole ratios being different compared to other 11 and 10-speed drivetrains within their groups from the pa- in years past, I'm curious.
• 31:16
I'd like to run an experiment and see actually how much cable is pulled on this. I'm geeking out here a little bit. I, I'm cautiously optimistic. Yeah. However, I think that the idea behind it is good.
• 31:30
I'm curious about the execution on some of the just mating parts because, let's face it, I mean, the HG systems had issues when it came to cassette interfaces with freehub bodies, that if you have an aluminum freehub body, there is a, a good potential for the lower gears to really gull into the freehub body.
• 31:47
We know this. I mean- This is why every time I got a very fancy Hope hub, I got a steel freehub body with it. Um, that, or it's like you just make sure that you pay more for the cassette- Right, yeah...
• 31:58
so that the low gears are running on, on alloy carriers. Yeah, you have to get- So- Yeah, just... Well, and that kinda makes sense. If you're gonna run high-end stuff, you run high-end stuff.
• 32:06
You don't put- Well, even the necessary, some of the stuff that's coming in OEM is coming with alloy freehub bodies, so, because it's a selling point to the manufacturer, to the OEM manufacturer that- Your bike is going to be two ounces lighter- It is...
• 32:21
because of this freehub body. You know, I'm not saying that, that it's not... I'm just, I'm interested. I am, I'm interested. But however, the 700 gram thing for a cassette, wow. Hmm.
• 32:32
For a 50, you know, for an 11-53 cassette, that's, that's a chunk of weight. So I mean, that shows that's like this is pretty much gonna be e-bike specific in my mind.
• 32:41
But- Well, I saw it on bikepacking, so I'd like, do the bikepacking people really care about weight? Probably not. You know- Well, I certainly don't, if I'm bikepacking.
• 32:49
I mean- But if you can get a comparative, you know, an 11-speed setup and you're not carrying an a- extra, like, quarter pound off your back wheel... I'll just take a leak.
• 33:01
Well- But that quarter pound is not- That doesn't- [laughs] Leaking that quarter pound is not the same- Right, right... as- It's-... weight at the center of a- I, I am curious... of an axle...
• 33:11
I am curious because- Oh my God, I'm nerding out... Shima- I'm totally gonna shut you guys down right now. [laughs] Shimano doesn't make a whole lot of dumb engineering choices.
• 33:19
They don't make a whole lot of- Right, that is true... when they do something, they're very- Well, their, their fishing gear kicks ass, I'll tell you that much.
• 33:24
Well, exactly, but I mean, aside from that, it's just that when they actually do something, they generally go through and execute it pretty goddamn well. I mean, we, there are exceptions to the rule.
• 33:33
I mean, like any of the, uh, STI integrated mountain bike shifters, yes, those were terrible. We can all admit to that.
• 33:39
But they take their time, they develop it properly, and they have a developed reason for why they're developing it the way it is. Makes good sense. Engineers are smart peoples. Well- Yep...
• 33:51
they're, they're, they're Japanese. They're very, very structured and very reasoned in some of their choices, so. Thank God for MIT. [laughs] Well, after World War II, you know how- Well, yeah, yeah...
• 34:03
well, you know, whatever. But- All right then. Well, thank you, uh, for the, uh, opinion on the Shimano stuff. It remains to be seen, but, uh, cautionous, cautionously- Cautionously... cautiously...
• 34:15
ly, knee- Cautiously... knee Cautiously... optimistic on that thing. Optimistically. Line. Line. [laughs] Line. What? Wait, we can't do those till the show's over. Oh. Thank you very much. Is the show over?
• 34:26
Well, I don't know. I'm pushing the button. Push the button. Later. And ramped out. Vroom.
• 34:33
  [upbeat music]
