- 1:05Speaker 2: up to five. The agenda today, if you need to know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: is Monday, the third of March. European leaders have been
- 1:16Speaker 2: arriving at a major summit in London. They're discussing security
- 1:19Speaker 2: support for Ukraine.
- 1:22Speaker 3: We're going to mix today because visits the generation comand
- 1:26Speaker 3: the security of Europe.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Talk to Ukraine is.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Not much.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Every night.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So that was UK President's a kis starmer. He's hosting
- 1:40Speaker 2: the summit. He gave Zelenski a big hug when Zelensky
- 1:43Speaker 2: arrived a day after. You know what he says, This
- 1:47Speaker 2: is kis Tadama says, the UK and France are going
- 1:50Speaker 2: to work with Ukraine to stop the fighting, to have
- 1:52Speaker 2: a peace plan, and they need to discuss that peace
- 1:55Speaker 2: plan with the US as they go forward.
- 1:57Speaker 3: We have to bridge this. We have to find a
- 2:00Speaker 3: way that we can all work together because in the end,
- 2:04Speaker 3: we've had three years of bloody conflict. Now we need
- 2:07Speaker 3: to get to that lasting piece. And I have to
- 2:10Speaker 3: say I've spoken to President Trump a number of times.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I've met him twice. We had a long session on Thursday.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'm clear in my mind that he does want lasting peace.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yes, so Prision Zelensky is also going to get to
- 2:23Speaker 2: talk with King Charles right after the summer is finished.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Now to Rome, we go and the Vatican Seer's Pope Francis,
- 2:30Speaker 2: who has been in hospital for just over two weeks
- 2:32Speaker 2: fighting double pneumonia, had a peaceful night and has been resting.
- 2:36Speaker 2: He had a bit of a health zip back on Friday,
- 2:38Speaker 2: a breathing crisis on Friday, renewing concerns over his wellbeing.
- 2:42Speaker 5: His lungs had to be aspirated, that they had to
- 2:44Speaker 5: be cleared of obstruction, and then the Pope had been
- 2:48Speaker 5: given oxygen a face mask essentially to help him to breathe.
- 2:51Speaker 5: But we were told that the Pope was alert throughout,
- 2:54Speaker 5: that he didn't lose consciousness, and even that he was
- 2:57Speaker 5: in good spirits.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yesterday evening and finally, authorities have launched a probe into
- 3:02Speaker 2: what they said were the suspicious deaths of Hollywood legend
- 3:05Speaker 2: Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy ata Kava. So things
- 3:08Speaker 2: have changed a bit. Santa Fey Sheriff Aiden Mendoz says
- 3:12Speaker 2: Hackman had likely been dead for over a week when
- 3:15Speaker 2: he was found with his wife and their new Mexico home,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and a statement issued on Thursday. Hackman's family said, of
- 3:20Speaker 2: course that they were devastated by the loss, and that
- 3:22Speaker 2: he was loved and admired by millions around the world
- 3:25Speaker 2: for his brilliant acting career, and that is true. It
- 3:27Speaker 2: is nine after.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Five the first word on the News of the Day
- 3:32Speaker 6: early edition.
- 3:33Speaker 1: With Andrew Dickens and one Room to make your property
- 3:36Speaker 1: search and symbol you talk sippy.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So it's always good to read the business pages. That's
- 3:42Speaker 2: where you all hear the real stories about the economy
- 3:44Speaker 2: and not the politicians roast into dreams. So I was
- 3:47Speaker 2: reading this unday our Times yesterday and there was a
- 3:49Speaker 2: spokesperson from the Reserve Bank talking about our investment rules
- 3:55Speaker 2: and he says the bank reckons that are not a
- 3:57Speaker 2: growth obstacle because of course you hear them corporate tax
- 4:00Speaker 2: breaks all the time, and how this would help our growth.
- 4:03Speaker 2: He doesn't believe that corporate tax payers tax breaks would
- 4:08Speaker 2: be as effective in raising productivity as some people say.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So business investment fell significantly in the last half of
- 4:15Speaker 2: last year, and the Reserve Bank governor said that's the
- 4:17Speaker 2: one thing he's most worried about. So business investment is
- 4:22Speaker 2: where you invest your money back in your business. It's
- 4:25Speaker 2: seen as the key to innovation, productivity and growth. But
- 4:29Speaker 2: our business investment level is below the OECD average, as
- 4:33Speaker 2: is our productivity. So if businesses are not investing in
- 4:37Speaker 2: those areas, where is the money going. Well, it's not
- 4:40Speaker 2: going on corporate tax I can tell you the bank,
- 4:43Speaker 2: the Reserve Bank says it's going back to shareholders in
- 4:46Speaker 2: the form of dividends.
- 4:48Speaker 7: So, as New.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Zealanders, we love our dividends, that is income while you
- 4:52Speaker 2: still own the shares that created it. It's like a
- 4:55Speaker 2: percentage of your capital gains as you go. Wouldn't you
- 4:58Speaker 2: love to have a dividend on your house a payment
- 5:00Speaker 2: you receive every time your house value increase. Well you
- 5:03Speaker 2: don't get that. That's not possible. Who would pay it?
- 5:05Speaker 2: But you do get dividends. And businesses like to give
- 5:08Speaker 2: dividends to their shareholders to keep the shareholders on their register.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But it's still giving money back to the shareholders and
- 5:16Speaker 2: all the while it's holding businesses back from reinvesting in
- 5:20Speaker 2: what they do.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Now.
- 5:22Speaker 2: The Reserve Bank has said that attitude has to fundamentally
- 5:25Speaker 2: change to long term productivity. What do you think? Do
- 5:29Speaker 2: you agree? And that is the challenges for businesses and shareholders.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Are you prepared to take the long hold or do
- 5:36Speaker 2: you want the cash now? And if you want the
- 5:39Speaker 2: cash now, don't expect productivity to magically grow. Have we
- 5:46Speaker 2: seen the myth figures? With all the myth we're consuming,
- 5:48Speaker 2: you think our productivity would be up. We're spedding away
- 5:51Speaker 2: like Billio. New Zealand meth use more than doubled in
- 5:55Speaker 2: the second half of twenty twenty four. It's the highest
- 5:57Speaker 2: level yet recorded. According to the analysis of our wastewater,
- 6:00Speaker 2: nearly thirty kilos worth of meth consumed in October. Now
- 6:06Speaker 2: why Mexican Asian cartels are flooding the market with the
- 6:09Speaker 2: help of our friends, the motorcycle gangs, the ones we
- 6:11Speaker 2: hampered with the gang patch man just took the patches
- 6:14Speaker 2: off and worked even harder. They're selling drugs like crazy.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And I don't need to tell you that this is
- 6:20Speaker 2: a particularly New Zealand scourge. I mean New Zealanders love
- 6:23Speaker 2: this stuff. I don't know why. What is there to
- 6:25Speaker 2: love about it? It corrodes your health, it distorts your mind,
- 6:28Speaker 2: It amplifies any violent streak you have. We love it,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and this is a battle we are losing. So there's
- 6:37Speaker 2: going to be more on this after seven on the
- 6:38Speaker 2: Mike Hosking Breakfast Show. But I just wanted to point
- 6:40Speaker 2: out the figures because this is our horror show. Now.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Speaking of horror shows, everybody on Friday sat down and
- 6:47Speaker 2: watched ten minutes of that interview. Some of us went
- 6:49Speaker 2: and watched the whole fifty minutes of the press conference.
- 6:53Speaker 2: If that, if you could call it that, between Trump
- 6:56Speaker 2: and Jadie Vance at of course, President Zelenski, what a road.
- 7:00Speaker 2: We're going to talk about this in a few moments
- 7:02Speaker 2: time with a former US Defense Department official, And my
- 7:05Speaker 2: question is is America out now of both the war
- 7:09Speaker 2: and the peace.
- 7:09Speaker 6: It's five thirteen on your radio and online on iHeartRadio
- 7:15Speaker 6: Early Edition with Andrew Dickens and One Roof to make
- 7:18Speaker 6: your Property search simple.
- 7:20Speaker 2: You talk said be we all got to see it,
- 7:22Speaker 2: the huge spectacle of the weekend between US President Donald Trump,
- 7:25Speaker 2: Vice President Jedy Vance, and Ukraine's President Volodimyr Zolensky. I'll
- 7:30Speaker 2: take you back there.
- 7:32Speaker 8: You're gambling with World War three. You're gambling with World
- 7:37Speaker 8: War three, and what you're doing is very disrespectful to
- 7:41Speaker 8: the country. This country's thank you, far more than a
- 7:45Speaker 8: lot of people said they should have.
- 7:47Speaker 9: Have you said thank you once.
- 7:50Speaker 7: In this entire media.
- 7:51Speaker 10: You said, who.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, it was fire, he wasn't it. And President
- 7:55Speaker 2: Trump told Zelenski to make a deal with Russia or
- 7:58Speaker 2: the US will be out. European leaders are now meeting
- 8:01Speaker 2: in London for a summit to discuss an outcome for
- 8:03Speaker 2: all of this. They're prepared to give security guarantees. Former
- 8:06Speaker 2: US Defense Department official Jeffrey Price joins me now from America. Hello, Jeffrey, A.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Good morning, getting warded everybody who's up so early in
- 8:15Speaker 4: New Zealand.
- 8:15Speaker 2: How's America reacting to what happened? You know? They are
- 8:18Speaker 2: they happy with their president or not? Or is it
- 8:20Speaker 2: split the next Like the rest of the world.
- 8:23Speaker 4: There is a bit of a split. Many Republicans are
- 8:28Speaker 4: at least publicly defending what the President and Vice President
- 8:33Speaker 4: Vance did, but a great many Americans are frankly embarrassed.
- 8:37Speaker 4: It was a disaster, no matter how you look at it.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And this is the kind of diplomacy that should not
- 8:44Speaker 4: be taking place on television exactly. And so I don't
- 8:47Speaker 4: think anybody comes out ahead except for the Russians.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about what actually happened to that, because
- 8:52Speaker 2: that's the other thing the analysis of it gives has
- 8:54Speaker 2: got all weird too. So at the basic point of it,
- 8:58Speaker 2: President Donald Trump will not agree to a ceasfire plan
- 9:01Speaker 2: if it includes a security guarantee, and Zelenski demands a
- 9:05Speaker 2: security guarantee. So if Trump won't include a security guarantee,
- 9:09Speaker 2: does that mean America is out now of both the
- 9:12Speaker 2: war and the peace.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 9:16Speaker 7: So.
- 9:16Speaker 4: This is so important for the security of Europe, for
- 9:20Speaker 4: the security of the world, that we have to come
- 9:23Speaker 4: to some resolution here. And the problem is that we're
- 9:26Speaker 4: We've got the Americans, we've got the Europeans, we've got
- 9:29Speaker 4: the Ukrainians and the Russian So it's a complicated negotiation.
- 9:33Speaker 4: The last time we had something that's similar to me
- 9:37Speaker 4: was the war in Bosnia in the nineties, when you
- 9:39Speaker 4: had different players as well. So Zelensky is going to
- 9:44Speaker 4: want to see that any ceasefire does not just allow
- 9:49Speaker 4: repeated aggression. There needs to be some deterrence of future
- 9:53Speaker 4: Russian aggression in any ceasefire that is likely going to
- 9:57Speaker 4: involve Europeans. And the question that's being discussed during the
- 10:01Speaker 4: Americans and Europeans and the Ukrainians. Is is what role
- 10:06Speaker 4: the United States might have, say backstopping what will be
- 10:11Speaker 4: at the front a European presence that's also being worked out.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Right, So security guarantees guaranteed by Europe. But if it
- 10:21Speaker 2: all got a bit pear shaped and Putin still took
- 10:23Speaker 2: them on, that America might come back in.
- 10:27Speaker 4: So America plays a crucial role even when we're not
- 10:31Speaker 4: at the front of a conflict in logistics and command
- 10:34Speaker 4: and control and intelligence surveillance. So anytime you have a
- 10:39Speaker 4: serious conventional force right now, NATO was organized to have
- 10:44Speaker 4: America at the core. When we had the war in Bosnia,
- 10:47Speaker 4: it started out with a European force under UN command
- 10:50Speaker 4: that did not work. It was replaced by a NATO
- 10:52Speaker 4: lead force with a one third American component that did work.
- 10:57Speaker 4: So I think that's what people might be thinking thinking
- 11:00Speaker 4: about President Trump is me career, he doesn't want the
- 11:03Speaker 4: United States to be in a front role. But to me,
- 11:07Speaker 4: any force that's going to be credible and effective is
- 11:10Speaker 4: either going to have to be a NATO force or
- 11:14Speaker 4: something like a NATO force, even if it's a europe
- 11:17Speaker 4: well tiller in NATO.
- 11:19Speaker 2: The Europeans are starting to talk about a European force
- 11:21Speaker 2: to run in conjunction with a NATO, and NATO seems
- 11:24Speaker 2: to be completely deep powered. It's a very interesting time.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And Jeffrey Price, I thank you so much for your thoughts.
- 11:28Speaker 2: And I had my own thoughts before five thirty. It
- 11:32Speaker 2: is a five twenty sport. There's a sport, and what
- 11:36Speaker 2: a weekend of sport there was. And I watched the
- 11:39Speaker 2: Warriors and I then went to the Gulf because I
- 11:41Speaker 2: was so angry. Elliot Smith's Nicks News.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And Views You Trust has done your day. It's early
- 11:48Speaker 1: edition with Andrew Dickens and one roof Make your property
- 11:51Speaker 1: googe simple you talk siyeah.
- 11:55Speaker 2: It's now twenty two minutes after five. I thought I'd
- 11:56Speaker 2: be updating the cricket all the way through this hour,
- 11:58Speaker 2: but I won't because they've just lost and Indian India
- 12:02Speaker 2: has won by forty four runs. New Zealand got to
- 12:04Speaker 2: two hundred and five. And Elliot Smith joins.
- 12:06Speaker 10: Me right now morning, Andrew.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Not the end of the world though, because Semy's coming
- 12:10Speaker 2: on Wednesday. But not a good practice run.
- 12:13Speaker 10: No, and it was actually looking quite good but came Williamson,
- 12:15Speaker 10: who made eighty one, couldn't find anyone to stick with him.
- 12:17Speaker 10: They had partnerships of thirty forty ish for a couple
- 12:21Speaker 10: of players, but the spinners, the Indian spinners took hold
- 12:24Speaker 10: in the Dubai wicket and what was quite promising one
- 12:27Speaker 10: hundred and thirty three for three and thirty third over
- 12:29Speaker 10: chasing two fifty but is a none could stick with.
- 12:32Speaker 10: Came Williamson and bowled out for two hundred and five.
- 12:34Speaker 10: Been so on Wednesday night.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Okay, so South Africa is next. Okay, Ration got six,
- 12:40Speaker 2: Rasia Ravender got six, Darrell got seventeen, Tom Latham fourteen,
- 12:44Speaker 2: then Phillips twelve. But all those players have stood up
- 12:47Speaker 2: before in the tournaments that we've played over the last
- 12:50Speaker 2: couple of weeks, so they've been and now and now
- 12:53Speaker 2: finally Cain has got a biggish score. So you've got
- 12:56Speaker 2: to say we're all good for a semi.
- 12:58Speaker 10: Let's hope it all comes together in a see final
- 13:00Speaker 10: against South Africa. You know we've got the wood on
- 13:02Speaker 10: them traditionally and some of those big games. So you
- 13:04Speaker 10: think back to twenty fifteen World Cup semi final there
- 13:07Speaker 10: at Eden Park, so there's president there and back to Lahaus.
- 13:10Speaker 10: They went to Dubai for this one, back to lahaw
- 13:13Speaker 10: for Wednesday, Art semi final.
- 13:14Speaker 2: The Warriors were beaten too. Everything.
- 13:17Speaker 10: Yes, that was pretty poor, wasn't it.
- 13:19Speaker 2: What did you say to me before you said it
- 13:20Speaker 2: was like they were still in pre season.
- 13:22Speaker 10: Yes, there was no attacking structure, no defensive structure. I
- 13:25Speaker 10: was not sure what they've been doing for, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 10: months on end. Very disappointing. And I don't know whether
- 13:31Speaker 10: it was the Vegas bright lights or whatever, but I
- 13:34Speaker 10: think there was more to it.
- 13:35Speaker 2: The commentoes were going on about how thin the field
- 13:38Speaker 2: is and so why weren't they putting it out wide
- 13:40Speaker 2: because we were all crammed up in the middle, So
- 13:42Speaker 2: I thought that.
- 13:42Speaker 10: Didn't seem to be any ability to build pressure on
- 13:45Speaker 10: the Raiders. The tries that the Warriors got were opportunistic
- 13:49Speaker 10: towards the end of each half. Very disappointing. And the Raiders,
- 13:53Speaker 10: who were not expected to be out there this season,
- 13:56Speaker 10: and indeed the Warriors went into that game as favorites,
- 13:58Speaker 10: well they absoutely belted the war So a lot of
- 14:01Speaker 10: soul searching to do, and now this allegation this morning
- 14:05Speaker 10: that Richard Agar, one of the Warriors assistants, has basically
- 14:07Speaker 10: throttled a British journalist in the press box. So the
- 14:11Speaker 10: nrols investigating that, the Warriors looking into it as well.
- 14:14Speaker 10: So couldn't have gone much worse, to be honest, yesterday, Andrew.
- 14:16Speaker 2: But that's why I then went over to the golf. Yes,
- 14:19Speaker 2: this was very pretty. There wasn't that uplifting it was
- 14:21Speaker 2: and Ricky Punting got an eagle on the seventh, which
- 14:23Speaker 2: shows you when you play a program, you actually can
- 14:25Speaker 2: play some pretty good golf.
- 14:26Speaker 10: He's pretty handy. Ricky Ponting and the winner of that
- 14:28Speaker 10: tournament as well, a former bikey who's turned his life
- 14:31Speaker 10: around and greatly great tats, great hats, impolitely and well
- 14:36Speaker 10: Lydia Coe won the women's World Championship in Singapore, so
- 14:39Speaker 10: she's had a great weekend and.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Of course, thank you so much. Eerlie Smith on Sport
- 14:42Speaker 2: five to twenty.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Five, the early edition full show podcast on iHeartRadio powered
- 14:47Speaker 1: by News.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Talks at Me news Talks be it is five twenty
- 14:51Speaker 2: seven now. Who didn't see the Trump Zelenski mountdown coming?
- 14:55Speaker 2: I did. I knew this was going to be a
- 14:56Speaker 2: disaster right from the start. Didn't expect so much drama.
- 15:00Speaker 2: The whole thing for a week or so more has
- 15:02Speaker 2: been a show for the crowds and not a real
- 15:03Speaker 2: play for peace. Because it was obvious before the summit.
- 15:07Speaker 2: President Zelenski made it very clear that he wants US
- 15:10Speaker 2: cease fire but with security guarantees. And President Trump made
- 15:15Speaker 2: it very clear that he wants to seize fire, but
- 15:18Speaker 2: he wouldn't give security guarantees. That's the heart of the matter,
- 15:21Speaker 2: that is the heart of it. Reportedly, America told Zelenski
- 15:25Speaker 2: not to mention the security guarantees at the press conference.
- 15:27Speaker 2: But as I say, that is the heart of Zelensky's possession.
- 15:31Speaker 2: He does not trust Putin because they've had US cease
- 15:35Speaker 2: fire with Putin before that Putin promptly broke. Why would
- 15:39Speaker 2: you trust Vladimir I. Remember, this isn't a conflict that's
- 15:42Speaker 2: three years old. This has been going on since twenty
- 15:43Speaker 2: fourteen in various guyses. So Trump made it very clear
- 15:47Speaker 2: he wants out and he wants a playoff of minerals.
- 15:49Speaker 2: For everything that US has put in so far, and
- 15:52Speaker 2: remember he has a mandate for that, he campaigned on it.
- 15:56Speaker 2: He's been public about it the whole way. He got
- 15:58Speaker 2: the vote. So when they meet and the press started recording,
- 16:01Speaker 2: Trump Advance spoke as though their plan was a fader complete,
- 16:05Speaker 2: but it wasn't. Ukraine always said no security guarantee, no deal.
- 16:10Speaker 2: So when Zelensky started reminding him or both of them
- 16:13Speaker 2: of what happened in the past, Trump Advance went two
- 16:17Speaker 2: on one, didn't they and they bullied him. They gave
- 16:20Speaker 2: him a lesson. It was school yard stuff, beating up
- 16:22Speaker 2: an immigrant kid with English as the second language, and
- 16:24Speaker 2: the Americans loved it. And that's who Trump and Vance
- 16:26Speaker 2: were actually playing to the American public, the American public
- 16:29Speaker 2: that voted for Trump, that are sick of trillions of
- 16:32Speaker 2: their dollars going to a place they barely know. The
- 16:35Speaker 2: American public is now saying Zelensky wants to continue with
- 16:38Speaker 2: the war, but that's not so. He wants a peace.
- 16:40Speaker 2: He wants a cease fire, but with a security guarantee.
- 16:45Speaker 2: He doesn't want a piece that lasts for just a week.
- 16:48Speaker 2: So Putin must be loving this. America is now seemed
- 16:51Speaker 2: to be selfish and irrelevant and looking after itself, while
- 16:55Speaker 2: Europe's under investment in defense is clearing Europe is prepared
- 16:59Speaker 2: to ensure the peace, but America is not. And by
- 17:03Speaker 2: the way, can I please remind everyone who goes on
- 17:05Speaker 2: about Zelensky being not in a suit that back in
- 17:08Speaker 2: the day when Winston Churchill went to Washington to convince
- 17:11Speaker 2: America to enter World War Two, he came dressed in
- 17:14Speaker 2: a military boiler suit, and that was to signify he
- 17:17Speaker 2: was in an actual war, which the Americans weren't. Zelensky
- 17:21Speaker 2: is in an actual war. Trump and Vans are not.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Andrew Dickens I watched Q and A for the first
- 17:28Speaker 2: time this year. Wasn't bad? Guy in Esperner was hosting it.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Hell and clacss of interesting things. We'll talk about that.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Gavin Gray from the UK, Howard's The Pope and before six,
- 17:40Speaker 2: Casey Castello on the New Police Trading School.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Andrew Dickens on a Filly edition with one roof. To
- 17:49Speaker 1: make your property search simple, youth, talg Zibby.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Welcome to your week. Third of BArch, first week of
- 18:12Speaker 2: marsh or Reddy. Can you believe it still hot for
- 18:15Speaker 2: much of New Zealand? Judy writes to me, Andrew, funny
- 18:18Speaker 2: how Elon must doesn't wear a suit? And that seems
- 18:20Speaker 2: to be okay. He wears a baseball cap as well.
- 18:22Speaker 2: What's happening there? And I know, but you know, Zelensky
- 18:25Speaker 2: can't wear military clothing even though he's actually in a war.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Someone else writes, Andrew, you can't be that stupid. So
- 18:31Speaker 2: this is their their thought. That their thought is. There
- 18:33Speaker 2: is two parts. The first is the minerals deal in
- 18:36Speaker 2: a ceasefire, and the second part is the long term
- 18:39Speaker 2: deal with the Russians with security guarantees for Ukraine. The
- 18:42Speaker 2: economic arrangement is also a security guarantee. Now, well, I said,
- 18:45Speaker 2: all that's that's true in a way, but that is
- 18:49Speaker 2: the Trump deal. That is not what Ukraine wants. That's
- 18:53Speaker 2: not what Zelenski wants. He wants first a cease fire
- 18:57Speaker 2: with security guarantees because he honestly believes that Putin will
- 19:00Speaker 2: we back in before you know it? And how can
- 19:03Speaker 2: he possibly get any economic arrangement, you know, if there
- 19:06Speaker 2: isn't already a security guarantee in place with with you know,
- 19:12Speaker 2: with America and Europe to protect them from Putin, who
- 19:15Speaker 2: could just go in just like that. He's done it before.
- 19:19Speaker 2: So yeah, you're write Texter, that is the way the
- 19:21Speaker 2: deal would look from the Trump point of view, but
- 19:23Speaker 2: that's not the way that Ukrainians want it to look like.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Therefore there is a problem and they start shouting at
- 19:29Speaker 2: each other. Excellent. Hey, I watched Q and A for
- 19:32Speaker 2: the first time this year. By the way, Guy and
- 19:35Speaker 2: Espert are hosting it at the moment. Yesterday's program was
- 19:37Speaker 2: with Helen Clark. Helen Clark just turned seventy five last week.
- 19:42Speaker 2: She was not fond of five Eyes anymore. She says
- 19:44Speaker 2: it's got mission creep. She said, it used to be
- 19:47Speaker 2: secret and purely about intelligence. Now it's turning into some
- 19:50Speaker 2: intergovernmental policy agency. Lately, they've released statements on migration. You're
- 19:54Speaker 2: supposed to not even know the thing exists. The fact
- 19:57Speaker 2: that we know it exists is a failure of what
- 19:59Speaker 2: it was set up to do. That was Helen Clark's
- 20:02Speaker 2: point of view. It was quite interesting. But the thing
- 20:04Speaker 2: about Helen Clark is that it was nice to hear
- 20:05Speaker 2: an interview with someone who knows her own mind and
- 20:08Speaker 2: speaks her position clearly. Even if you don't agree with it,
- 20:13Speaker 2: you know, that's all you want. Something that the new
- 20:16Speaker 2: bunch of politicians could certainly learn. Twenty one to six
- 20:20Speaker 2: right around the country we go. Callen Proctor joins us
- 20:22Speaker 2: from Tuneedan. Hello, Callum, Yes, morning Andrew. So we've got
- 20:25Speaker 2: a plant that's in the water of a major tourist destination.
- 20:28Speaker 2: So what is this part? Whereabouts is this?
- 20:31Speaker 11: It's called Lagris siphon. Let's speak problem this one. It's
- 20:34Speaker 11: an invasive weed clogging up the water in Lake Wanica
- 20:38Speaker 11: and so Land Information New Zealand's leading the charge on
- 20:42Speaker 11: trying to eradicate this Lagri siphon two months or a
- 20:45Speaker 11: two month long process. We'll see four rugby fields worth
- 20:50Speaker 11: of Hessian mats laid on the lake's floor, laid by
- 20:53Speaker 11: divers to smother this weed. This will help try and
- 20:57Speaker 11: build on progress made over the last two decades. It
- 21:00Speaker 11: has to be done for the lake to survive and
- 21:02Speaker 11: can continue to be a major tourist attraction. Biosecurity manager
- 21:05Speaker 11: Tracy Burton says it's essential this work because the plant
- 21:08Speaker 11: can take over and choke the waterway completely if left untouched.
- 21:12Speaker 2: How's your weather?
- 21:14Speaker 11: Our periods a rain right around Otago Dunedin gets as well.
- 21:17Speaker 11: Twenty one the high today.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I thank you Claire sherew it joins us fro christ
- 21:20Speaker 2: Church tally clear.
- 21:21Speaker 12: Good morning.
- 21:21Speaker 2: So Christchurch Girls High needs earthquake rebuild. When's that going
- 21:25Speaker 2: to start?
- 21:26Speaker 13: I know, Andrew, Look, after fourteen years, we're told this
- 21:30Speaker 13: final piece of the puzzle for Girls High will be
- 21:32Speaker 13: this year. So it was decided the school needed an
- 21:35Speaker 13: entirely new main block in twenty twenty after they tried
- 21:39Speaker 13: for five years to strengthen the existing one. Consultants that
- 21:42Speaker 13: advised it would just be better to rebuild. The Ministry's
- 21:45Speaker 13: Regional Infrastructure Manager, Simon Crookshank, says that redevelopment is part
- 21:49Speaker 13: of the christ Church School rebuild program, which was meant
- 21:52Speaker 13: to finish by twenty twenty. He says the projects now
- 21:55Speaker 13: in design and we'll move to construction by the end
- 21:57Speaker 13: of this year. There's concerned though it won't even be
- 22:00Speaker 13: fit for purpose. Principal Helen Armstrong says the builds for
- 22:04Speaker 13: eleven hundred students, despite them having almost thirteen hundred. She
- 22:08Speaker 13: says the school's been extremely patient. That is also very frustrated,
- 22:12Speaker 13: as it deserves a good quality building that meets the
- 22:14Speaker 13: needs of their students.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Yes, indeed, Now, how's your weather cloud increasing?
- 22:18Speaker 13: With passable rain a bit later Southerly's the high should
- 22:21Speaker 13: be twenty five.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Maxtel joins us from Wellington Halla Mac good morning. We
- 22:26Speaker 2: have a missing man and people are hunting for them.
- 22:28Speaker 2: So there's a new development. Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 9: The police have been looking for Travis Langford for a
- 22:33Speaker 9: month and a half now. He went missing traveling from
- 22:36Speaker 9: Wellington to Waikattle. Twenty four year old's car was later
- 22:41Speaker 9: found burned out at a farm in a Nadoma that's
- 22:44Speaker 9: quite a rural area east of Tekuwiti. Emergency services private
- 22:48Speaker 9: ones too have turned up nothing. There's a sense that
- 22:52Speaker 9: authorities have a fair idea of what he's up to,
- 22:54Speaker 9: but just can't put that final piece together. There have
- 22:57Speaker 9: been credible sightings of him in the Wye Pappa and
- 23:01Speaker 9: among a keynot areas. Another incredible sighting that he appeared
- 23:05Speaker 9: to be hitchhiking on the side of the road. Police
- 23:08Speaker 9: appealing for more information from the public, specifically for a
- 23:10Speaker 9: man traveling around south white cattle in long pants, no shoes,
- 23:14Speaker 9: wearing a backpack. Police urging people to check their outbuildings, sheds, barns,
- 23:20Speaker 9: abandoned buildings on their properties for this man. Travis, did you.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Just say no pants, no long pants, shoes no shoe,
- 23:30Speaker 2: which is the better combination? I would have thought they
- 23:33Speaker 2: would have been very easy to find some shoes. Okay,
- 23:37Speaker 2: so how's Wellington's were.
- 23:38Speaker 9: There mostly find today's strong Northeries twenty three the High Central.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Neither rit around? Who joins us from aalkanhellen? Neither no pants?
- 23:45Speaker 12: Good morning.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I was just standard by this story that is the
- 23:49Speaker 2: university using AI tutors to teach people, Yes, to teach people.
- 23:55Speaker 4: It's right.
- 23:55Speaker 14: It came out over the weekend. And now what's happened
- 23:58Speaker 14: is that Auckland Unis defended its use of AI tutors.
- 24:02Speaker 14: And this isn't a digital marketing course. So the students,
- 24:05Speaker 14: they've expressed outrage on Reddit over compulsory tutorials and marketing
- 24:09Speaker 14: three Go four being led by an AI tutor. That's right, Andrew.
- 24:12Speaker 14: So they questioned is the university allowed to take this approach?
- 24:16Speaker 14: A business school spokesperson says the tutors they don't replace
- 24:20Speaker 14: in person teaching, they're used as supplementary learning tools. They
- 24:25Speaker 14: also say that this technology has undergone some testing, provides
- 24:29Speaker 14: factual content to support student learning.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Hope you hope?
- 24:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 14: So the course is a two hour tutorial in person
- 24:36Speaker 14: every week as well. So let's see what happens on
- 24:38Speaker 14: this one.
- 24:39Speaker 2: All right, how's Aukan's weather okay?
- 24:40Speaker 14: Partnery cloudy today, still warm Auckland's high twenty five.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Pauline writes to me Andrew, the free world needs America's
- 24:46Speaker 2: protection just as Churchill knew it did for World War Two.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Couldn't agree more, and it needs it now more than ever.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Couldn't agree more, And Pauline writes, China is watching with
- 24:55Speaker 2: great interest. Yes, and God bless America. Double excavation. Matt
- 25:00Speaker 2: China's Defense ministry spokesperson on Thursday warn Taiwan that we
- 25:04Speaker 2: will come and get you sooner or later, so they
- 25:08Speaker 2: see that there's a gap. It was a press conference
- 25:10Speaker 2: on Thursday grabbed attention inside China because apparently that's a
- 25:14Speaker 2: line from a Record Baking children's movie called Neja two,
- 25:17Speaker 2: and then the film the line was given by a groundhog.
- 25:21Speaker 2: But yes, she's all go all around the world. More
- 25:23Speaker 2: on this with Gavin Gray from the UK and also
- 25:26Speaker 2: before six Casey Costello. There's a new police training facility
- 25:30Speaker 2: it's in Auckland first time ever. Plus new firearms laws
- 25:33Speaker 2: it's all.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Coming international correspondence with ends and eye insurance, peace of
- 25:38Speaker 1: mind for New Zealand Business.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Thirteen to six. Gavin Graham the UK Hellokevin, and you've
- 25:46Speaker 2: got Zelenski. What's happening.
- 25:48Speaker 15: Yeah, big meeting there in London, Lancaster House, right in
- 25:52Speaker 15: the heart of London. Plenty of people outside Downing Street
- 25:56Speaker 15: chairing when the President of Ukraine, Miss Zelenski arrived and
- 26:01Speaker 15: the Prime Minister. So that really does reflect the strength
- 26:04Speaker 15: of feeling for the country. Now with you to get
- 26:06Speaker 15: a press conference in about ten fifteen minutes, Andrew. But
- 26:10Speaker 15: you know, this is all about really trying to work
- 26:12Speaker 15: out how US europe relationships are going to develop, and
- 26:18Speaker 15: also of course what can the Ukrainians expect now from Europe.
- 26:22Speaker 15: Will Europe step up and do the heavy lifting. But
- 26:26Speaker 15: even if they do that heavy lifting, by which I
- 26:28Speaker 15: may even mean boots on the ground, more money, more arms,
- 26:32Speaker 15: more logistics, they are demanding or they need they stay
- 26:35Speaker 15: American air cover. And that is something at the moment
- 26:39Speaker 15: that Donald Trump says he's not going to supply, but
- 26:41Speaker 15: we do know he flip blops.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 26:44Speaker 2: But at the same time, this conversation is not about
- 26:46Speaker 2: continuing the war. It's about a piece. It's about having
- 26:49Speaker 2: a piece with a security guarantee, which everyone's getting a
- 26:52Speaker 2: bit confused. They think that Zelenski now wants to carry
- 26:54Speaker 2: on with the war, but he wants to have a
- 26:56Speaker 2: security guarantee, boots on the ground to make sure that
- 26:59Speaker 2: Putin doesn't come back once they come up with some deal.
- 27:02Speaker 15: Yeah, there was speculation, not confirmed, speculation that Donald Trump
- 27:06Speaker 15: thinks that if the American companies start digging for the
- 27:09Speaker 15: minerals in the east and north of Ukraine, by the
- 27:13Speaker 15: very fact they're American Putin, wouldn't you try and evade again.
- 27:18Speaker 15: But that's what the Europeans say is not right, and
- 27:21Speaker 15: that's why they want this proper action plan in place
- 27:24Speaker 15: for the peace.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Now. Pope Francis had a bit of a turn on Friday,
- 27:27Speaker 2: but he's come right.
- 27:30Speaker 15: Yes, I mean, I wouldn't say completely right. But he was,
- 27:33Speaker 15: of course, for the third week in a row, absent
- 27:35Speaker 15: and unable to deliver his traditional Angelus prayer in person.
- 27:39Speaker 15: Each week, visitors go to the Vatican, usually gathering on
- 27:42Speaker 15: Sent Peter Square to see the Pope. Third weekend, he's
- 27:46Speaker 15: not been there. He's spent most of that time in hospital.
- 27:48Speaker 15: He's still there and it was said that he had
- 27:52Speaker 15: written the text from his hospital room in the past
- 27:56Speaker 15: few days and that was read out for him, and
- 27:59Speaker 15: he told flicks around the world that he felt their
- 28:01Speaker 15: affection and closeness and said my quote, I feel as
- 28:04Speaker 15: if I'm carried and supported by God's people. He'd had
- 28:08Speaker 15: a peaceful night last night, but this was following, as
- 28:11Speaker 15: you seller, a second breathing crisis as it was called
- 28:14Speaker 15: at the start of the weekend. He received extra oxygen
- 28:18Speaker 15: the ball, but we're being told he was not inturbated,
- 28:21Speaker 15: in other words, did not have one of those breathing
- 28:23Speaker 15: tubes down his throat. So positive news in that sense,
- 28:27Speaker 15: but still a long way from being out of the woods.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Kevin, I thank you so much. It is now a
- 28:31Speaker 2: live in to six ridiculous all right. Orkan's getting a
- 28:34Speaker 2: police training facility. Currently one to be cops have to
- 28:37Speaker 2: spend twenty weeks of police courage in Poiliua, but the
- 28:41Speaker 2: government yesterday announced a new facility to make it more accessible.
- 28:44Speaker 2: It's also supposed to help with the target of increasing
- 28:46Speaker 2: frontline police numbers by five hundred and Associate Minister for
- 28:50Speaker 2: police is Casey Cascilla who joins you know, Hella Casey,
- 28:54Speaker 2: good morning, I'm good. You have to wonder why it's
- 28:56Speaker 2: taken so long to have a second training facility in
- 28:59Speaker 2: New Zealand's biggest.
- 29:01Speaker 7: Yes, and that's it's been a process that thing worked
- 29:04Speaker 7: on for a while, but it was funding that we've
- 29:07Speaker 7: managed to get through. The five hundred police increase came
- 29:10Speaker 7: through last year. Was identified opportunities, was to plan any
- 29:15Speaker 7: opportunities to increase those police numbers with the target and
- 29:19Speaker 7: that's what they've done.
- 29:20Speaker 2: How many can you train at this new facility? And
- 29:22Speaker 2: is it residential like the Potaro one?
- 29:25Speaker 7: There is a small part of residential, so there will
- 29:28Speaker 7: be some that will be able to live in residence.
- 29:31Speaker 7: The big attraction is that there is a barrier for
- 29:35Speaker 7: the target demographic that we're trying to get, you know,
- 29:37Speaker 7: those sort of younger early family members that sort of
- 29:41Speaker 7: have got young families that are trying to get them
- 29:43Speaker 7: down to colleges. A big ask for twenty weeks, so
- 29:48Speaker 7: there will be a mix of that.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Okay, now, how are you going with the extra five
- 29:51Speaker 2: hundred numbers? How many cops have we got right now?
- 29:55Speaker 7: So we've got ten one hundred and ninety three I
- 29:58Speaker 7: think as that the end of last year, so.
- 30:01Speaker 2: We turn ten one hundred and ninety three, Well done.
- 30:06Speaker 7: That's yes, So that's that's a little bit less than
- 30:09Speaker 7: when we came in, which was ten two hundred eleven.
- 30:12Speaker 7: But we've got three hundred and eleven at college at
- 30:13Speaker 7: the moment.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Okay, well, back back in August, we had ten thousand,
- 30:16Speaker 2: one hundred and seven. Now you've got ten thousand, one
- 30:19Speaker 2: hundred and ninety three back in back in you know,
- 30:24Speaker 2: back in August of last year. Basically you've gotten down
- 30:27Speaker 2: one hundred and four police, and the Labor Party was
- 30:29Speaker 2: saying that means you need six hundred hit to five hundred.
- 30:32Speaker 2: So where are you at with the five hundred extra
- 30:35Speaker 2: police based on the base number?
- 30:38Speaker 7: Yes, that's what I'm saying. We've got three hundred eleven
- 30:40Speaker 7: at college at the moment, so they'll be graduating. So
- 30:43Speaker 7: that's that's down there. At night. We've got another wing
- 30:45Speaker 7: going in another week's time, so the wing numbers are
- 30:48Speaker 7: increasing the June. We're aiming for the Auckland wing to
- 30:54Speaker 7: be around June, so we've got we've got more wings
- 30:58Speaker 7: going through so we're still really good. And we've also
- 31:01Speaker 7: got a large number of the commissioners talking about yesday,
- 31:04Speaker 7: a large number of cops that are wanting to rejoin,
- 31:07Speaker 7: which the last figures I saw was about one hundred
- 31:09Speaker 7: and twenty police officers wanting to rejoin. So there's a
- 31:12Speaker 7: lot of factors that we're doing in order to achieve
- 31:15Speaker 7: us and drivers that we've got really good recruitment pipeline.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Okay, good, and you believe you'll get to that five
- 31:21Speaker 2: hundred target. If so, can you give us a date?
- 31:27Speaker 7: Well, the date is November twenty eight of November this
- 31:31Speaker 7: year as the date we have to achieve the ten thousand,
- 31:35Speaker 7: seven hundred and eleven, which was our five hundred target.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Okay, we'll just start. We'll just write all these numbers
- 31:39Speaker 2: down so we're perfectly clear in the FOO in the future.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Ten thousand and eleven, currently on ten thousand, currently on
- 31:47Speaker 2: ten thousand, one hundred and ninety three. Good luck, casey.
- 31:50Speaker 2: We want, we want. I think people want cops, don't you.
- 31:54Speaker 2: It is our seven to six.
- 31:55Speaker 1: The News you Need this Morning and the in Depth
- 31:58Speaker 1: Analysis Early edition with Andrew Dickens and one roof Make
- 32:02Speaker 1: your Property Search simple use talk sidy.
- 32:05Speaker 2: So just to repeat those numbers so we're totally clear.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Casey Costello told us currently we have ten thousand, one
- 32:10Speaker 2: hundred and ninety three police officers to get to the
- 32:13Speaker 2: action promise of five hundred by this coming November. They
- 32:17Speaker 2: need to get to ten thousand, seven hundred and eleven.
- 32:19Speaker 2: That means they're currently going backwards. There is more than
- 32:22Speaker 2: five hundred positions that need to be found to get
- 32:26Speaker 2: to the target by November ten, seven hundred and eleven,
- 32:29Speaker 2: and we're what we're eight months down. This is not
- 32:34Speaker 2: a criticism, but this is just if you set a target,
- 32:36Speaker 2: that's what happens. People hold you to it. My Costking
- 32:40Speaker 2: joins me, maybe.
- 32:41Speaker 12: We should talk about it at the time and see
- 32:43Speaker 12: if they made it as opposed to sort of enters.
- 32:45Speaker 12: So it's got a bit of that whole. Let's anticipate
- 32:48Speaker 12: some disaster.
- 32:48Speaker 2: But they said to Casey, come on, then, come on,
- 32:51Speaker 2: you know we all want the cops. So whatever you
- 32:53Speaker 2: do the new police training facility is good. You know,
- 32:55Speaker 2: whatever you do, it's all good. Just get to the numbers.
- 32:58Speaker 2: That's your Well, they say, the people applying is through
- 33:01Speaker 2: the roof. There's a conversion problem from applying to actually
- 33:04Speaker 2: doing it. But anyway, well, can I just say I
- 33:06Speaker 2: love the fact that they've got a now training facility
- 33:09Speaker 2: in Auckland. It's not residential, so you can actually it
- 33:12Speaker 2: was obvious because you had to go to party, you
- 33:17Speaker 2: had to live there, and then you had to throw
- 33:18Speaker 2: your hat in the air.
- 33:20Speaker 12: Anyway, we'll talk to the police commissioner about that this morning.
- 33:22Speaker 12: Best story of the weekend for me was a guy
- 33:23Speaker 12: called Ryan Peak, who I'd never heard of, and he
- 33:26Speaker 12: turns out to be a criminal who was in a
- 33:28Speaker 12: bikey gang and spent time in jail. He was a
- 33:30Speaker 12: promising junior golfer and I happened to be watching all
- 33:33Speaker 12: this yesterday and I was watching him and I didn't
