- 0:02Speaker 1: If you have your Bibles with you, open them to
- 0:04Speaker 1: Daniel chapter 12.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Daniel chapter 12.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And you'll be relieved to know that Daniel chapter 12
- 0:11Speaker 1: is only a fraction as long as Daniel chapter 11.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Amen. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. Daniel chapter 12. And as
- 0:22Speaker 2: you find Daniel chapter 12, we will read this chapter.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And I think we say this every time we come
- 0:31Speaker 1: to the end We always say how sad we are
- 0:35Speaker 1: to see a book come to a close when we
- 0:38Speaker 1: have preached all the way through a book. But I
- 0:40Speaker 1: have to admit, dealing with the second half of Daniel,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm sad to see Daniel go. But there will be
- 0:50Speaker 1: a little relief not having to work through some of
- 0:54Speaker 1: the most difficult passages in the entire Bible. And chapter
- 0:59Speaker 1: 12 is no exception to that rule. Daniel chapter 12
- 1:04Speaker 1: is another one of those places that's very difficult. But
- 1:07Speaker 1: I am also encouraged because we read through Daniel and
- 1:10Speaker 1: we wade through Daniel and we find all these passages
- 1:13Speaker 1: that are so difficult. And every once in a while
- 1:15Speaker 1: when we're beginning to feel like maybe we lacked intellectual
- 1:19Speaker 1: acumen or maybe we just lacked spiritual maturity or whatever, there.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Are these moments.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And there's one here in Daniel chapter 12 where he goes,
- 1:27Speaker 1: I don't get it. And I go.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Thank you, Lord.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I just needed to hear that from Daniel right now,
- 1:34Speaker 1: that he's writing these things and he doesn't get it
- 1:36Speaker 1: because I don't get it. Amen.
- 1:39Speaker 2: We're not alone.
- 1:41Speaker 1: But we will understand it better by and by, to
- 1:44Speaker 1: quote the hymn writer. Daniel chapter 12. Let's read this together.
- 1:50Speaker 1: As we read it together, note that we have two
- 1:54Speaker 1: main paragraphs here in Daniel chapter 12.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And they're almost symmetrical.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Not quite exactly symmetrical, but you see the same pattern
- 2:04Speaker 1: going on in the first half and the second half.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You see an angelic being, and you see a reference
- 2:12Speaker 1: to the tribulation coming to God's people. You see a
- 2:17Speaker 1: reference to God's people being identified and separate from those
- 2:23Speaker 1: who are wicked. You also see the sealing up of
- 2:27Speaker 1: this vision, and so on and so forth. You see
- 2:30Speaker 1: it twice here in Daniel chapter 12, and you'll notice
- 2:34Speaker 1: that as we go from verses 1.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Through 4 to verses 5 through the end of the chapter.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It reads, at that time, and remember, we've gone from
- 2:45Speaker 1: talking about Antiochus IV to talking about.
- 2:49Speaker 2: The end of the age.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And now we read, at that time shall arise Michael,
- 2:54Speaker 1: the great prince of who has charge of your people.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And there shall be a time of trouble, such as
- 3:02Speaker 1: never has been since there was a nation till that time.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But at that time, your people shall be delivered. Everyone
- 3:11Speaker 1: whose name shall be found written in the book.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And many of those who sleep in the dust of.
- 3:17Speaker 1: The earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some
- 3:20Speaker 1: to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise
- 3:25Speaker 1: shall shine like the brightness of the sky above, and
- 3:29Speaker 1: those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever
- 3:34Speaker 1: and ever. But you, Daniel, shut up the words and
- 3:38Speaker 1: seal the book until the time of the end. Many
- 3:41Speaker 1: shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase. Now,
- 3:46Speaker 1: next paragraph. Notice some of the same elements. Then I, Daniel, looked,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and behold, two others stood, one on this bank of
- 3:54Speaker 1: the stream and one on that bank of the stream.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And someone said to the man clothed in linen, often
- 4:02Speaker 1: a reference to angels there, who was above the waters
- 4:05Speaker 1: of the stream, so we know that this is an
- 4:07Speaker 1: angelic being, how long shall it be till the end
- 4:12Speaker 1: of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen,
- 4:16Speaker 1: who was above the waters of the stream. He raised
- 4:20Speaker 1: his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and
- 4:25Speaker 1: swore by him who lives forever that it would be
- 4:29Speaker 1: for a time, times, and half a time, and that
- 4:34Speaker 1: when the shattering of the power of the holy people
- 4:37Speaker 1: comes to an end, all these things would be finished.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I heard, but I did not understand.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Then I said, O my Lord, what shall be the
- 4:51Speaker 1: outcome of these things? He said, go your way, Daniel,
- 4:55Speaker 1: for the words are shut up and sealed until the
- 4:58Speaker 1: time of the end. Many shall purify themselves and make
- 5:02Speaker 1: themselves white and be refined, but the wicked shall act wickedly.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And none of the wicked shall understand, but those who
- 5:11Speaker 1: are wise shall understand. And from the time that the
- 5:16Speaker 1: regular burnt offerings is taken away, And the abomination that
- 5:19Speaker 1: makes desolate is set up. There shall be 1,290 days.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days.
- 5:32Speaker 1: But go your way to the end and you shall
- 5:36Speaker 1: rest and shall stand in your allotted place at the
- 5:41Speaker 1: end of the days. Amen.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Beautiful way to end the book of Daniel.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And there are a number of things here, again, elements
- 5:52Speaker 1: that you find in the first half and in the second.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Half that are parallel to one another.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And what I want you to do is I want
- 5:59Speaker 1: you to see these elements, but I also want you
- 6:01Speaker 1: to think about presuppositions that we have about the end
- 6:05Speaker 1: of the age. Because I believe that Daniel chapter 12
- 6:10Speaker 1: turns some of those presuppositions on their head. There are
- 6:13Speaker 1: things that we just presume to be true, things that
- 6:15Speaker 1: we've been told again and again and again and again
- 6:18Speaker 1: and again, things that have been written in books that
- 6:20Speaker 1: have been popularized that we just absolutely do not question,
- 6:25Speaker 1: that we ought to question. And I believe Daniel chapter
- 6:29Speaker 1: 12 helps us to question that. One thing that we
- 6:32Speaker 1: see is we see the encouraging presence of angelic beings.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We see that in verse 1 and also in verses
- 6:38Speaker 1: 5 and 6.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Look again with me in verse 1.
- 6:42Speaker 1: At times shall arise Michael, the great prince who has
- 6:46Speaker 1: charge of your people. Angels are, according to Hebrews 1.14,
- 6:53Speaker 1: ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of
- 6:56Speaker 1: those who are to inherit salvation. So angels and angelic
- 7:02Speaker 1: beings are those sent out to serve God's people. To
- 7:05Speaker 1: keep watch over God's people, if you will.
- 7:08Speaker 2: This is encouraging.
- 7:10Speaker 1: When you see the angelic beings there also in verse
- 7:13Speaker 1: 5 and 6. This is encouraging to us. It is
- 7:16Speaker 1: an encouragement to us. Now, just like anything else, there's
- 7:21Speaker 1: a ditch on both sides of the road. There's a
- 7:23Speaker 1: ditch on one side when we pretend like there is
- 7:26Speaker 1: no spiritual realm. when we pretend like there is actually
- 7:29Speaker 1: no angelic aid for the people of God. And the
- 7:32Speaker 1: ditch there, of course, is that we're ignoring the clear
- 7:35Speaker 1: teaching of Scripture. The Bible teaches very clearly that angels
- 7:39Speaker 1: exist and that angels are ministering spirits and that they
- 7:43Speaker 1: are ministering on behalf of God's elect, on behalf of
- 7:47Speaker 1: God's people. So we need to understand that and believe that.
- 7:51Speaker 1: The ditch on the other side of the road is
- 7:53Speaker 1: that everything becomes angelic.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Amen, somebody?
- 7:59Speaker 1: You know what we wrestle with, for example, the same
- 8:01Speaker 1: thing happens when we talk about demonic, which are fallen angels.
- 8:05Speaker 1: There's the world, the flesh, and the devil. How many
- 8:08Speaker 1: of you know that most of what you deal with
- 8:09Speaker 1: is the world and the flesh?
- 8:12Speaker 2: Amen?
- 8:12Speaker 1: The devil ain't worried about you. You're absolutely not that important.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And you're so wicked that, you know, you don't even
- 8:20Speaker 1: need his help. You can't even deal with the world
- 8:25Speaker 1: and the flesh and you're worried about the devil all
- 8:26Speaker 1: over the place. Amen? So most of the time what
- 8:31Speaker 1: we're dealing with is the world and the flesh and not,
- 8:34Speaker 1: you know, these demonic spirits directly acting upon you or
- 8:39Speaker 1: against you.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And the same thing.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Occurs when you talk about the spiritual realm and angels
- 8:44Speaker 1: and the way that angels operate. It is not that
- 8:47Speaker 1: we are somehow walking around in this bubble of angels
- 8:51Speaker 1: and that everything that we do is sort of being,
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know, handled by them, if you will. It's not
- 8:58Speaker 1: the way the world works, but God in his providence
- 9:05Speaker 1: has provided angels as ministering spirits who serve and intervene
- 9:12Speaker 1: on behalf of his people. The second thing is that
- 9:16Speaker 1: angels are frequently mentioned in passages about the.
- 9:20Speaker 2: General resurrection on the last day. We see that here,
- 9:23Speaker 2: by the way, clearly.
- 9:25Speaker 1: At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who
- 9:28Speaker 1: has charge of your people. And there shall be a
- 9:31Speaker 1: time of trouble such as never has been since there
- 9:34Speaker 1: was a nation till that time. But at that time,
- 9:36Speaker 1: your people shall be delivered. Everyone whose name shall be
- 9:40Speaker 1: found written in the book. And many, verse 2, of
- 9:45Speaker 1: those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Some to everlasting life. and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
- 9:55Speaker 1: It's interesting that you read about the angelic beings here
- 9:58Speaker 1: in the context of this passage. Matthew chapter 16 and
- 10:01Speaker 1: verse 27, for example. For the Son of Man is
- 10:04Speaker 1: going to come with His angels in glory, in the
- 10:08Speaker 1: glory of His Father. And then He will repay each
- 10:12Speaker 1: person according to what He has done. So Christ is
- 10:15Speaker 1: going to return. He's going to return with his angels.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And he's going to return at the end of the
- 10:20Speaker 1: age to pay each person according to what he has
- 10:23Speaker 1: done or to judge the living and the dead according
- 10:26Speaker 1: to what they have done. And so here we see
- 10:29Speaker 1: judgment and angelic beings at the time of judgment. Matthew
- 10:33Speaker 1: chapter 24, verse 24, verse 31. And isn't it just providential?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Just like God that today we're here in Daniel chapter
- 10:40Speaker 1: 12 and our New Testament reading just, you know, quote, randomly,
- 10:47Speaker 1: Matthew chapter 24. And he shall send out his angels
- 10:53Speaker 1: with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his
- 10:57Speaker 1: elect from the four winds, from one end of the
- 11:01Speaker 1: heaven to the other. So here's a picture. Christ is
- 11:05Speaker 1: coming with his angels. He's going to judge the living
- 11:08Speaker 1: and the dead. But now we see a picture of
- 11:10Speaker 1: the angels being active participants in calling up those believers.
- 11:18Speaker 1: The angels will call us out of the grave. The
- 11:24Speaker 1: angels will swoop down and gather up God's people. That
- 11:29Speaker 1: there is this spiritual, supernatural activity that is going on.
- 11:33Speaker 1: By the way, it has to be a spiritual, supernatural
- 11:35Speaker 1: activity going on for dead people to rise.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Amen? Matthew 25, 31.
- 11:44Speaker 1: When the Son of Man comes in his glory and
- 11:46Speaker 1: all the angels with him, then he shall sit on
- 11:50Speaker 1: his glorious throne. Mark chapter 8 and verse 38. For
- 11:54Speaker 1: whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in
- 11:58Speaker 1: this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son
- 12:01Speaker 1: of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the
- 12:04Speaker 1: glory of his Father with the holy angels. Again and
- 12:10Speaker 1: again and again, we see this reality. So we know
- 12:13Speaker 1: angelic beings are ministering spirits, but nowhere are they more
- 12:18Speaker 1: active than at the end of the age. It is
- 12:21Speaker 1: as though the end of the age comes, and we'll
- 12:24Speaker 1: talk about this momentarily, but in a moment we're going
- 12:26Speaker 1: to see this sort of heightening tension that comes at
- 12:29Speaker 1: the end of the age. And as there's this heightening tension,
- 12:32Speaker 1: there is a heightening persecution. But as there is heightening
- 12:35Speaker 1: tension and heightening persecution and we get close to the
- 12:38Speaker 1: end of the age, it is as though God is
- 12:41Speaker 1: amassing his troops and the angels are making ready and
- 12:45Speaker 1: they're standing at the ready waiting for the trumpet call
- 12:48Speaker 1: that they might descend with Christ to do battle on
- 12:52Speaker 1: his behalf and awaken his elect, call them to his
- 12:56Speaker 1: presence and inaugurate the end of the age.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Wouldn't you like to see Cecil B. DeMille get a
- 13:07Speaker 2: hold of that?
- 13:12Speaker 1: I just fear sometimes that our faith is not supernatural enough.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I just fear sometimes that we get so caught up
- 13:21Speaker 1: in the mundane and the day-to-day that we begin to
- 13:24Speaker 1: think that we only serve a God who deals with
- 13:30Speaker 1: sprained toes and headaches and grandma's trip to the doctor
- 13:36Speaker 1: and these things that we sort of become accustomed to
- 13:40Speaker 1: praying about and bringing before the throne of grace which.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Are so petty and so small in.
- 13:46Speaker 1: The grand scheme of things. Now I know when you
- 13:49Speaker 1: get ready to go see the doctor it's not small
- 13:50Speaker 1: to you. But if you put it into the perspective
- 13:57Speaker 1: of the God whom you serve whose forces will be
- 14:01Speaker 1: amassed on that day It changes things. When you recognize
- 14:12Speaker 1: that these beings stand ready for service to God, you
- 14:18Speaker 1: recognize that whatever it is that you're dealing with or
- 14:21Speaker 1: wrestling with, it's not going to overwhelm the God whom
- 14:25Speaker 1: we serve.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Amen?
- 14:28Speaker 1: Beyond this, we also see the angels here are not
- 14:32Speaker 1: just coming for ethnic Jews at the end of the age,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but for all God's people.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Amen? Notice this, and watch the transition.
- 14:42Speaker 1: At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince, who
- 14:45Speaker 1: has charge over your people. Now, immediately we hear that.
- 14:50Speaker 1: He's speaking to Daniel. Daniel's a Jew who's in exile
- 14:53Speaker 1: in Babylon, right? So Michael has charge over your people,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and we think the Jews in Babylon. And there shall
- 15:02Speaker 1: be a time of trouble such as never has been
- 15:05Speaker 1: since there was a nation till that time. What nation?
- 15:08Speaker 1: I guess we're talking about the nation of the Jews, okay?
- 15:11Speaker 1: But at that time, your people shall be delivered.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Watch this.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Is that every ethnic Jew? Absolutely not. So now your
- 15:26Speaker 1: people doesn't refer to every ethnic Jew. And many of
- 15:34Speaker 1: those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,
- 15:37Speaker 1: some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
- 15:44Speaker 1: What's being referred to here? Who are your people? Your
- 15:48Speaker 1: people are the people of God. Daniel's people are the
- 15:51Speaker 1: people of God. There are some people who are ethnic
- 15:54Speaker 1: Jews with him in Babylon who are less his.
- 15:59Speaker 2: People than you and I are if we're in Christ.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Let me say that again.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Here's Daniel in Babylon in captivity with other ethnic Jews.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And there are some of those about whom this statement
- 16:15Speaker 1: is true. You and I, who are not ethnic Jews,
- 16:19Speaker 1: are more his people than those who were with him
- 16:25Speaker 1: in Babylon at that time.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Why? Because if they were not gods by faith....
- 16:34Speaker 1: They did not belong to God by faith. They weren't
- 16:37Speaker 1: really Daniel's people at all. But you and I who
- 16:42Speaker 1: belong to him by faith are Daniel's people. And so
- 16:47Speaker 1: Michael is not just in this picture. When you read
- 16:50Speaker 1: it and flesh it out, there is this coming for
- 16:53Speaker 1: the people of God. This is not just coming for Israel. Yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 1: it's coming for the Israel of God, the church of
- 16:59Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Amen.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Amen. But this is not just about one particular ethnic
- 17:04Speaker 1: and geopolitical people group. But isn't this what we read
- 17:07Speaker 1: in Romans chapter 9, verses 16 to 13? But it
- 17:11Speaker 1: is not as though the word of God has failed.
- 17:13Speaker 1: For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And not all are children of Abraham because they are
- 17:21Speaker 1: his offspring. But through Isaac shall your offspring be named.
- 17:25Speaker 1: This means that it is not the children of the
- 17:27Speaker 1: flesh who are children of God, but the children of
- 17:30Speaker 1: the promise according to the promise are counted as offspring.
- 17:35Speaker 1: The children of the promise are counted as offspring. The
- 17:37Speaker 1: others are not counted as offspring. Who belongs to God?
- 17:41Speaker 1: Who are God's people? Those by faith are God's people.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Notice the difference between the people who belong to God
- 17:51Speaker 1: and the people who don't is whether or not they
- 17:54Speaker 1: are Now, that reference to wisdom doesn't mean that if
- 18:00Speaker 1: you're really smart, you belong to God, and if you're not,
- 18:03Speaker 1: you don't belong to God. But those who are wise
- 18:06Speaker 1: are those who are made wise. They come to knowledge.
- 18:09Speaker 1: They come to understanding. They are given this knowledge and
- 18:12Speaker 1: this understanding. We see this later. Look with me, for example,
- 18:15Speaker 1: in verse 10. Many shall purify themselves and make themselves
- 18:20Speaker 1: white and be refined. We know that's a picture of salvation.
- 18:23Speaker 1: We've been seeing that in Revelations. Those who clothe themselves
- 18:25Speaker 1: in white robes, the ones who are made righteous by
- 18:27Speaker 1: the Lamb. But the wicked shall act wickedly, and none
- 18:34Speaker 1: of the wicked shall understand. But those who are wise
- 18:38Speaker 1: shall understand. Those who are wicked. So wisdom here is
- 18:41Speaker 1: the opposite of wickedness. He's not here talking about intelligence.
- 18:46Speaker 1: He's talking about those who understand by the grace of God.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Those who come to this truth. You are not saved
- 18:52Speaker 1: because you are smarter than other people.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Amen.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Smarter people than you will go to hell. First of all,
- 19:04Speaker 1: there are smarter people than you. I should probably start there.
- 19:07Speaker 1: For some of you, you need me to take that step, okay?
- 19:11Speaker 1: There are smarter people than you. And there are smarter
- 19:14Speaker 1: people than you who will end up in hell. Coming
- 19:20Speaker 1: to faith in Jesus Christ is not about your intellect.
- 19:24Speaker 1: It is about the grace of God And on that
- 19:27Speaker 1: last day, it will not be about those merely who
- 19:33Speaker 1: were intelligent. Another great passage is Ephesians 2, 11 to 22.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I'll leave you to read that one. In addition to
- 19:42Speaker 1: this encouraging presence of angelic beings, we also have the
- 19:46Speaker 1: discouraging reality of persecution. We see that in verse 1.
- 19:50Speaker 1: 1 and also in verse 7. Look at verse 1 again.
- 19:54Speaker 1: At that time shall rise Michael, the great prince who
- 19:58Speaker 1: was in charge of his people, and there shall be
- 20:01Speaker 1: a time of trouble such as never has been since
- 20:05Speaker 1: there was a nation till that time. Go down with
- 20:09Speaker 1: me in verse 7. And look at verse 7. And
- 20:13Speaker 1: I heard the man clothed in linen who was above
- 20:15Speaker 1: the waters and the streams. He raised his right hand
- 20:17Speaker 1: and his left hand toward heaven and swore by him
- 20:20Speaker 1: who lives forever that it would be for.
- 20:22Speaker 2: A time, times, and half a time.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And that when, listen to this, the shattering of the
- 20:28Speaker 1: power of the holy people comes to an end. The
- 20:35Speaker 1: shattering of the power of the holy people He said
- 20:42Speaker 1: it again and again and again and in multiple ways
- 20:46Speaker 1: that at the end of the age, there would be
- 20:49Speaker 1: great persecution of the people of God at the end
- 20:53Speaker 1: of the age. Let me tell you this, brothers and sisters.
- 21:00Speaker 1: The church will not escape tribulation. The church has not
- 21:06Speaker 1: escaped tribulation. The church is in the midst of tribulation.
- 21:12Speaker 1: And again, this flies in the face of what we
- 21:14Speaker 1: hear so often. We have all just been inundated with
- 21:19Speaker 1: dispensational premillennialism.
- 21:21Speaker 2: And all of us, I mean, we're just washed in
- 21:24Speaker 2: it and bathed in it.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I'll never forget my first interview that I had to
- 21:29Speaker 1: interview for a church position.
- 21:31Speaker 2: I was a young seminarian. I was going through this
- 21:33Speaker 2: interview for a church position.
- 21:35Speaker 1: And I was actually asked, you know, if I believed
- 21:38Speaker 1: in a pre-tribulation rapture. And everybody in the room knew
- 21:42Speaker 1: that if I said I did not believe in a
- 21:44Speaker 1: pre-tribulation rapture, and at that time I did because I
- 21:47Speaker 1: didn't know that there was anybody who was a real
- 21:48Speaker 1: Christian who didn't believe in a pre-tribulation rapture of the church.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And so I'm like, yeah, yeah. Church ain't going to
- 21:59Speaker 1: go through no tribulation, man. We're going to be out
- 22:02Speaker 1: of here. We're going to be raptured. We're gone.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Of course I believe in that.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I guess I didn't pay attention to Daniel chapter 12.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Watch this. Look at what he says.
- 22:17Speaker 1: And there shall be a time of trouble such as
- 22:20Speaker 1: never has been since there was a nation till that time.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But at that time, your people shall be delivered. Everyone
- 22:32Speaker 1: whose name shall be found written in the book of life.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Written in the book of life. And then we have
- 22:37Speaker 1: the general resurrection. after this tremendous persecution. Here's the other thing.
- 22:45Speaker 1: It's going on now. The only thing we find at
- 22:48Speaker 1: the end of the age is just that it has
- 22:50Speaker 1: continued to intensify. There is no secret rapture of the
- 22:55Speaker 1: church before the great tribulation. It's just not there. There
- 23:01Speaker 1: are no multiple raptures. It's just not there. The calling
- 23:06Speaker 1: up of the dead at the end of the age
- 23:08Speaker 1: is just that.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It's the end of the age. It's one event, one
- 23:14Speaker 2: fell swoop. Bam! Christ comes and it's over. Give me
- 23:19Speaker 2: a break.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Jesus is going to return for a thousand years and
- 23:23Speaker 1: there's going to be a new temple where there are
- 23:25Speaker 1: sacrifices being made to him while he's ruling on the
- 23:28Speaker 1: earth and he's going to allow that blasphemy to go on?
- 23:34Speaker 2: Help you if you believe that. That's blasphemy.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Here's Jesus, who is the Lamb of God, who was
- 23:44Speaker 1: slain for the sins of the people of God. And
- 23:47Speaker 1: you're going to put a lamb or a goat on
- 23:49Speaker 1: an altar and kill that lamb or that goat while
- 23:53Speaker 1: the Lamb of God is ruling and reigning?
- 23:57Speaker 2: No. Absolutely not. And that is all presuppositional. All of it.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Every last bit of it.
- 24:07Speaker 1: It's not what the scriptures clearly teach. But the good
- 24:18Speaker 1: news is that God preserves his people in the midst
- 24:23Speaker 1: of it. There's also this picture of the inevitability of
- 24:28Speaker 1: the general resurrection and the judgment. Verses 2, 10, We already.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Looked at verse 2. Look at it again.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Many of those who sleep in the dust of the
- 24:39Speaker 1: earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame
- 24:43Speaker 1: and everlasting contempt.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Notice this, okay?
- 24:46Speaker 1: Because the secret rapture, the secret pre-trib rapture, basically what
- 24:51Speaker 1: that's supposed to mean is that God's people are going
- 24:54Speaker 1: to be raptured and they're going to be taken out
- 24:55Speaker 1: of here secretly, okay? And everybody else is going to
- 25:01Speaker 1: be looking around going, you know.
- 25:03Speaker 2: What happened to them? Here's a general resurrection that happens
- 25:09Speaker 2: at the end of the age for everybody.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Look at verse 10. Verse 13. I believe that's a
- 25:37Speaker 1: reference to the fact that Daniel's going to die. And
- 25:42Speaker 1: shall stand in your allotted place at the end of
- 25:45Speaker 1: the days. That's a reference to him being resurrected.
- 25:51Speaker 2: But when? At the end of the days. At the end.
- 25:56Speaker 2: At the end. At the end. At the end. At
- 26:00Speaker 2: the end.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Hebrews chapter 9. In verse 27, verse 26 through 28.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Just as it is appointed to man to die once,
- 26:13Speaker 1: and after that comes the judgment. So Christ, having been
- 26:16Speaker 1: offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear
- 26:19Speaker 1: a second time, not to deal with sin, but to
- 26:24Speaker 1: save those who are eagerly waiting for him. He appears
- 26:27Speaker 1: a second time, not a second and a third.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Says he appears a second time. Again, look at that again.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Every man will die.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And then he will face the judgment. And then right
- 26:38Speaker 1: after that, Christ is going to appear a second time.
- 26:41Speaker 2: For what? For the judgment, not for a secret rapture.
- 26:44Speaker 2: For the judgment. Listen to this.
- 26:48Speaker 1: One of the passages that is often used to refer
- 26:50Speaker 1: to this idea of a secret.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Rapture of the church.
- 26:53Speaker 1: 1 Thessalonians 4, 13 through 18.
- 26:56Speaker 2: I'm going to read.
- 27:00Speaker 1: But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers,
- 27:03Speaker 1: about those. By the way, I heard this passage preached
- 27:04Speaker 1: not long ago. And the pastor took this, this was
- 27:08Speaker 1: his text, and he was preaching the whole idea of,
- 27:11Speaker 1: you know, dispensational premillennialism and the secret rapture of the
- 27:14Speaker 1: church and, you know.
- 27:15Speaker 2: And then, you know, all this sort of stuff. This
- 27:17Speaker 2: was his text.
- 27:21Speaker 1: But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers,
- 27:22Speaker 1: about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve
- 27:27Speaker 1: as others who have no hope. For since we believe
- 27:32Speaker 1: that Jesus died and rose again, even so— Through Jesus,
- 27:35Speaker 1: God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
- 27:39Speaker 1: For this we declare to you by a word from
- 27:43Speaker 1: the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left
- 27:48Speaker 1: until the coming of the Lord, who are left until
- 27:51Speaker 1: the coming of the Lord, who are left until the
- 27:54Speaker 1: coming of the Lord, this is when he comes at
- 27:56Speaker 1: the end of the age, will not precede those who
- 27:59Speaker 1: have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from
- 28:02Speaker 1: heaven with a cry of command with the voice of
- 28:05Speaker 1: an archangel. Does that sound like a secret? And with
- 28:11Speaker 1: the sound of the trumpet of God and the dead
- 28:14Speaker 1: in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive,
- 28:18Speaker 1: who are left, will be caught up together with them
- 28:21Speaker 1: in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
- 28:24Speaker 1: And so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore,
- 28:28Speaker 1: encourage one another with these words.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Where do you get a secret rapture from that passage
- 28:35Speaker 2: of Scripture? It's not there. That's the end of the age.
- 28:42Speaker 2: One fell swoop, one event.
- 28:50Speaker 1: We also see a clear call to proclaim the truth
- 28:53Speaker 1: until he comes. Notice what we find back in verses
- 28:58Speaker 1: 3 and 4. Those who are wise shall shine like
- 29:03Speaker 1: the brightness of the sky above, and those who turn
- 29:06Speaker 1: many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever. Those
- 29:13Speaker 1: who turn many to righteousness will shine like the stars
- 29:16Speaker 1: forever and ever. The same thing we see again at
- 29:21Speaker 1: the second half, especially there in verse 10 that we've
- 29:24Speaker 1: read a couple of times. The idea there is that
- 29:27Speaker 1: in the midst of all of this, there is this
- 29:29Speaker 1: promise that of God's angelic protection of his people. There's
- 29:34Speaker 1: also this promise that there's going to be this persecution.
- 29:38Speaker 1: But you see, in the midst of this, that there
- 29:39Speaker 1: is going to be this resurrection at the end of
- 29:41Speaker 1: the age, but also that between now and then, that
- 29:45Speaker 1: the people of God will be called forth under righteousness,
- 29:49Speaker 1: and that there are those among the people of God
- 29:51Speaker 1: who will be especially marked out as those who call
- 29:55Speaker 1: forth others to righteousness.
- 29:58Speaker 2: This sounds very familiar, doesn't it? It ought to.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Romans chapter 10, verses 14 to 17. How then will
- 30:04Speaker 1: they call on him whom they have not believed? And
- 30:08Speaker 1: how are they to believe in him whom they have
- 30:12Speaker 1: never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
- 30:16Speaker 1: And how are they to preach unless they are sent?
- 30:19Speaker 1: As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of
- 30:21Speaker 1: those who preach the good news.
- 30:25Speaker 2: They have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord,
- 30:29Speaker 2: who has believed what he has heard from us, so
- 30:32Speaker 2: faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
- 30:38Speaker 1: What's being referenced here in Daniel is the same thing.
- 30:43Speaker 1: That God's people are going to be called forth from
- 30:46Speaker 1: now until the end of the age. How are God's
- 30:48Speaker 1: people going to be called forth from now until the
- 30:50Speaker 1: end of the age? By the faithful proclamation of the gospel.
- 30:55Speaker 1: By the way, not by scaring them with, you know,
- 31:01Speaker 1: the idea of the second coming.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Amen?
- 31:05Speaker 1: People aren't scared into the kingdom of God. That's not
- 31:10Speaker 1: the gospel. Paul says, I'm not ashamed of the gospel
- 31:13Speaker 1: of Jesus Christ because it is the power of God
- 31:16Speaker 1: unto salvation.
- 31:18Speaker 2: It's the gospel.
- 31:19Speaker 1: This picture of the second coming, quite frankly, is of
- 31:22Speaker 1: much more use for those of us who know God
- 31:25Speaker 1: than it is for those who don't. Yes, we warn them,
- 31:28Speaker 1: but we warn them because of their sin that God
- 31:31Speaker 1: will judge them, not warn them about the second coming. Folks,
- 31:35Speaker 1: chances are you're not going to make it to the
- 31:36Speaker 1: second coming. I've said it before, I'll say it again.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Last time I checked, the death rate was one per person.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I didn't look today, I promise. But if I did look,
- 31:48Speaker 1: I doubt that it would have changed. More than likely,
- 31:52Speaker 1: you're going to die. Here you are sitting up worried
- 31:55Speaker 1: about the second coming of Jesus when just before you,
- 31:58Speaker 1: you could die before you get your neck all the
- 32:01Speaker 1: way fixed to look up for him to come again.
- 32:07Speaker 2: What do you do then? It's not the second coming,
- 32:12Speaker 2: but the gospel. Amen?
- 32:14Speaker 1: Amen. The second coming is a picture that encourages us.
- 32:20Speaker 1: It encourages us in the midst of tribulation. And I
- 32:24Speaker 1: guarantee you, folks, we are in the midst of tribulation.
- 32:27Speaker 2: You read it before, let me read it again.
- 32:28Speaker 1: In Revelation chapter 1, verse 9, I, John, your brother
- 32:38Speaker 1: and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the
- 32:42Speaker 1: patient endurance that are in Jesus Christ. was on the
- 32:46Speaker 1: island called Patmos on account of the word of God.
- 32:50Speaker 1: John says in Revelation chapter one, by the way, the
- 32:54Speaker 1: idea is that the great tribulation happens beginning in Revelation
- 32:57Speaker 1: chapter six, okay? So one through three, you have the
- 33:01Speaker 1: church age and then chapters four and five, the church
- 33:04Speaker 1: has already been raptured up and we're in heaven. And
- 33:07Speaker 1: then in chapter six, we're looking at the great tribulation
- 33:09Speaker 1: that's going on on the earth while the church has
- 33:12Speaker 1: already been raptured up. We'll get back to that in
- 33:14Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. But let me just say for now,
- 33:17Speaker 1: we don't buy that. That chapter 6 on in Revelation
- 33:23Speaker 1: has nothing to do with you and I in the
- 33:25Speaker 1: here and now. I don't buy that for a minute.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Chapter 6 on in Revelation has everything to do with
- 33:30Speaker 1: you and me in the here and the now.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Amen?
- 33:35Speaker 1: John says he's our partner in the tribulations. We are
- 33:39Speaker 1: in the midst of tribulation even now. And God has
- 33:43Speaker 1: a word for us in the midst of tribulation. Two
- 33:46Speaker 1: words for us. Number one, it's going to get worse
- 33:48Speaker 1: before it gets better. And number two, it won't last indefinitely.
- 34:00Speaker 1: How long is it going to last? This angel says,
- 34:04Speaker 1: a time, times, and half a time.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Of course it does.
- 34:38Speaker 2: You can't just have like three and a half. Three
- 34:40Speaker 2: and a half what?
- 34:41Speaker 1: Three and a half days, three and a half hours,
- 34:43Speaker 1: three and a half years, three and a half millennia,
- 34:45Speaker 1: three and a half what? Ah, dear friend, remember our
- 34:50Speaker 1: time in Revelation. There are numbers that are extremely important.
- 34:55Speaker 1: One of the most important numbers is the number seven.
- 34:58Speaker 1: The number seven is the number of completion.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Completion.
- 35:04Speaker 1: The number three and a half is a broken seven,
- 35:08Speaker 1: which means prior to completion. Prior to the completion of what?
- 35:14Speaker 1: Look with me again.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Verse seven.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I heard the man clothed in linen who was above
- 35:27Speaker 1: the waters of the stream. He raised his right hand
- 35:30Speaker 1: and his left hand toward heaven. and swore by him
- 35:34Speaker 1: who lives forever that it would be for a time, times,
- 35:38Speaker 1: and half a time, and that when the shattering of
- 35:43Speaker 1: the power of the holy people comes to an end,
- 35:46Speaker 1: all these things would be finished. The shattering of the
- 35:59Speaker 1: power of the holy people. Three and a half. If
- 36:06Speaker 1: it's a seven, you have the complete shattering of the
- 36:09Speaker 1: power of the holy people and they're done. Three and
- 36:13Speaker 1: a half is a broken seven. God stops it before
- 36:19Speaker 1: his people.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Are wiped out. That's what a time, times, and half
- 36:28Speaker 2: a time means. That shattering. Shattering.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Is not seen through to its completion. God halts it.
- 36:38Speaker 1: How does he halt it? He amasses his armies. And
- 36:45Speaker 1: the Son of God himself rides in as the general
- 36:51Speaker 1: of his armies. And before the shattering of the power
- 36:56Speaker 1: of the people of God can be complete, Christ comes
- 37:00Speaker 1: and makes an end to those who are attempting to
- 37:04Speaker 1: make an end of us.
- 37:10Speaker 2: That's what it means.
- 37:14Speaker 1: There is this intensification there is this gathering and growing
- 37:22Speaker 1: but God will not leave us utterly forsaken finally We
- 37:29Speaker 1: see the certainty that these things will come to pass.
- 37:32Speaker 1: In verses 4 and verse 9, he's told to seal
- 37:34Speaker 1: up these things, seal up this vision. Now, to seal
- 37:37Speaker 1: it up, what does that mean? Well, seal this up. Daniel,
- 37:41Speaker 1: close this up so other people won't see it. Well,
- 37:43Speaker 1: we see in the first half and in the second
- 37:45Speaker 1: half that knowledge is going to increase. People's understanding is
- 37:49Speaker 1: going to increase. So he's not telling Daniel not to
- 37:51Speaker 1: do it. By the way, we have the book of Daniel.
- 37:53Speaker 1: So seal it up. Does it mean, Daniel, I'm telling
- 37:56Speaker 1: you this stuff, but I don't want you to tell anybody,
- 37:58Speaker 1: so don't write it.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Because he wrote it.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Amen?
- 38:02Speaker 2: So it doesn't mean that. Seal up these things. Does
- 38:05Speaker 2: it mean, Daniel, here's the deal.
- 38:07Speaker 1: You get these things and they're clear, but I want
- 38:09Speaker 1: you to obscure them so that other people don't get them.
- 38:12Speaker 2: It can't mean that.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Why?
- 38:13Speaker 2: Because Daniel went, I don't understand. I don't understand. Amen?
- 38:19Speaker 2: So we know that it can't mean that. Seal it up.
- 38:21Speaker 2: It can't mean that. What does it mean?
- 38:25Speaker 1: Well, remember when we read about that broken seal over
- 38:29Speaker 1: in Revelation? And there is a picture of the document
- 38:33Speaker 1: being sealed up, which is about the unleashing of the
- 38:37Speaker 1: judgment of God, but also the idea of a will
- 38:42Speaker 1: that is sealed.
- 38:44Speaker 2: And it's broken.
- 38:44Speaker 1: It's broken.
- 38:45Speaker 2: When it's time for you to receive your full inheritance.
- 38:48Speaker 1: By the way, there can be copies of it out
- 38:50Speaker 1: there that are unofficial copies so that you can know
- 38:53Speaker 1: what's in the will, but you don't get what's in
- 38:55Speaker 1: the will until the finality of the event and the
- 39:00Speaker 1: breaking of the seal on the original. Seal it up, Daniel.
- 39:08Speaker 1: It's going to come to pass. My judgment will be
- 39:11Speaker 1: poured out on the wicked, and my people will have
- 39:13Speaker 1: their full inheritance, but not right now. Daniel can't understand
- 39:21Speaker 1: this because Daniel just thinks we're talking about getting.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Back to the Holy Land. That's what he's thinking. There's
- 39:29Speaker 2: this land. of promise. We're going to get back to
- 39:31Speaker 2: that land of promise, and that's going to be the deal.
- 39:32Speaker 2: That's going to be it right there. No, Daniel, you
- 39:35Speaker 2: have no idea.
- 39:37Speaker 1: That's not the breaking of the seal because that land
- 39:39Speaker 1: right there is just a picture of the idea of
- 39:42Speaker 1: the land of promise for the people of God. And
- 39:44Speaker 1: this people right here is just the picture of the
- 39:48Speaker 1: actual people of God. You don't get the reality, Daniel.
- 39:51Speaker 1: You can't comprehend the reality, Daniel. But it will be
- 39:57Speaker 1: made clear. And the judgment and the promise will be
- 40:03Speaker 1: manifested in its entirety. Then we get this last part here.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Verse 11. Out of nowhere.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Out of nowhere. And from the time that the regular
- 40:16Speaker 1: burnt offerings is taken away, and the abomination that makes
- 40:19Speaker 1: desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Huh?
- 40:24Speaker 2: We know that we see that number 1,260 days, which
- 40:26Speaker 2: is right at three and a half years. There is
- 40:27Speaker 2: the solar....
- 40:43Speaker 1: Rendering of time that they had, which was 364 days,
- 40:46Speaker 1: and the lunar rendering of time that they had, which
- 40:48Speaker 1: made a year, 354 days. Their solar lunar sort of
- 40:53Speaker 1: rendering that made it right at 360 days. And 360 days,
- 40:55Speaker 1: you're right there smack dab in the middle at 1260 days.
- 40:58Speaker 1: But this goes beyond any of those to 1,290 days.
- 40:59Speaker 1: So it's a little beyond the three and a half years.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And then there's another number, which is 45 days later.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Several possibilities.
- 41:20Speaker 1: One is that we turn back and we talked about
- 41:23Speaker 1: Antiochus again because we know that the work of Antiochus
- 41:28Speaker 1: against the people of God lasted right about three and
- 41:31Speaker 1: a half years. And then it was a little over
- 41:33Speaker 1: a month later after God's people were delivered from Antiochus,
- 41:38Speaker 1: it's only about a month and a half later that
- 41:39Speaker 1: he dies. But this is pointing forward. I believe even
- 41:45Speaker 1: beyond that. I believe this is one of those prophecies
- 41:49Speaker 1: that has multiple fulfillments.
- 41:52Speaker 2: We see this in Antiochus. Yeah, we see this in Antiochus.
- 41:56Speaker 1: But Jesus in Matthew chapter 24 refers back to this
- 41:59Speaker 1: prophecy again, talking about the end of the age. I
- 42:02Speaker 1: believe we saw this in AD 70 as well with
- 42:06Speaker 1: the destruction of the temple.
- 42:07Speaker 2: I believe we saw that. But it also points to
- 42:12Speaker 2: the same ultimate reality. What's that ultimate reality?
- 42:17Speaker 1: The ultimate reality is this, that there are those who
- 42:22Speaker 1: oppress the people of God, sometimes manifest in individuals who
- 42:28Speaker 1: do so in a very public way. But even that
- 42:34Speaker 1: is cut short because there is no man who can
- 42:39Speaker 1: oppress the people of God. And ultimately, he will meet
- 42:44Speaker 1: his end. And I love it because in the very
- 42:47Speaker 1: next verse, we get the so what. Because we're left
- 42:52Speaker 1: with that verse right there, you know, verses 11 and 12,
- 42:56Speaker 1: scratching our heads going, what is that?
- 42:59Speaker 2: Who is that?
- 43:00Speaker 1: Could be this, could be that. Probably a combination of
- 43:04Speaker 1: this and that and something else. Okay, so what do
- 43:07Speaker 1: we do with that?
- 43:08Speaker 2: Verse 13, go your way to the end You shall
- 43:14Speaker 2: rest and shall stand in your allotted place at the
- 43:18Speaker 2: end of the days. That's not just for Daniel. That's
- 43:22Speaker 2: for you and me. What do I do with this?
- 43:25Speaker 2: Go your way until the end. Do what God's called
- 43:31Speaker 2: you to do. Be what God's called you to be.
- 43:34Speaker 2: And then you're going to rest. You're going to die.
- 43:38Speaker 2: But that's okay.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Okay. Because even death won't stop you from standing in
- 43:44Speaker 1: your allotted place at the end of the age. Where's
- 43:48Speaker 1: your allotted place? With Christ. So what's the 1290 and
- 43:56Speaker 1: the 1335? Whatever it is, it's somebody who meets their end.
- 44:03Speaker 1: And they don't get to stand where I stand. They'll
- 44:07Speaker 1: stand for a while. But their standing and my.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Standing are two entirely different standings.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Because I stand with the King of Kings and the
- 44:18Speaker 1: Lord of Lords. I stand with Christ himself. I don't
- 44:31Speaker 1: know what you are going to be called to endure.
- 44:36Speaker 1: But I do know this. In this life you shall
- 44:41Speaker 1: have trouble. I know that all those who desire to
- 44:45Speaker 1: live a godly life in Christ Jesus shall be persecuted.
- 44:50Speaker 1: And I know that whether you and I are alive
- 44:53Speaker 1: at the end of the age when these things have
- 44:55Speaker 1: intensified or whether we die a thousand years ahead of that,
- 45:00Speaker 1: we are going to experience trials, tribulation, persecution, heartache, and difficulty.
- 45:11Speaker 1: We are going to see men who mock God, who
- 45:16Speaker 1: terrorize the people of God. And we're going to ask
- 45:20Speaker 1: ourselves when we see this, God, how long are you
- 45:23Speaker 1: going to allow this man to do what he's doing
- 45:26Speaker 1: and say what he's saying before you do something about it?
- 45:30Speaker 1: And when you get to that place and just before
- 45:32Speaker 1: you kind of lose yourself and shake your fist at God,
- 45:37Speaker 1: remember what he says to Daniel.
- 45:44Speaker 2: I'm in control. I'll deal with that. You just go
- 45:50Speaker 2: your way until the end.
- 45:57Speaker 1: And then you just rest until my angels call you.
- 46:03Speaker 1: And then you'll stand in your allotted place. Because of
- 46:09Speaker 1: Christ who died in your allotted place. And trust me,
- 46:16Speaker 1: there will be no one at that time making a
- 46:20Speaker 1: mockery of God or his people.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Let's pray.
