- 0:32IDK. Oh my gosh.
- 0:35Today we're going to go on. What a journey across.
- 0:39We're at a crossroads, if you will.
- 0:40Speak about cross country. Speak about cross country, my my
- 0:45girls, gays and theys. I am so thrilled to welcome back
- 0:50my friend, returning guest of the pod, Melissa Leavenworth.
- 0:53Thank you so much. Thank you for being here.
- 0:55Happy to be here. Thank you for choosing this
- 0:59movie. Thank you for choosing
- 1:00Crossroads. God, did I need to watch this
- 1:02movie today. I am just delighted that I got
- 1:07to watch this, so thank you for that and thank you for being
- 1:11here. What is going on with you?
- 1:14OK, so hi, Winnie. I'm there's a lot going on.
- 1:20I'm gonna where? Do you wanna begin?
- 1:22Where? Do you wanna begin?
- 1:23Where do you wanna begin? You're training.
- 1:26You're running. Training.
- 1:27I'm training so hard. I'm training, OK, I am training
- 1:31for 1/2 marathon in Canyon Lands, Utah.
- 1:34So cool, which I love. I love Canyon Lands and I'm
- 1:38going to use that as an opportunity to run, raise money
- 1:41for Project ICU, which helps women with closing costs.
- 1:46And it's like a grant program where you can get up to $10,000
- 1:50to help you facilitate owning your home.
- 1:53And I was able to benefit from that.
- 1:55So I just want to kind of give back and do my part.
- 1:58Yes, it's very cool. And the way that it happened was
- 2:01so like fortuitous. I just started running at Run
- 2:05Club and made some very nice new friends.
- 2:09And then when I was visiting Moab, I started to get the ads
- 2:12cause Instagram is listening. Oh yeah, she's listening.
- 2:15And look, they don't always hit the targeted ads, but this one I
- 2:18was like, I will go run 13 miles in the Canyonland.
- 2:21Absolutely. So after you look it up, it's
- 2:23like people use that to to raise money all the time.
- 2:26And I'm like, I never run. People aren't used to me
- 2:27running, so they'll give me a little bit of money to run.
- 2:30So where do I see that? They have.
- 2:31I have never asked them for this before and so they won't see it
- 2:35coming. They'll be so shocked that
- 2:36they'll have to say. Yes.
- 2:38I'm also not like historically, historically athletic.
- 2:42So I think it's very OK. Like for example when I was a
- 2:45child and we would all race down the hill recess, I would
- 2:51purposely trip and fall because I just like couldn't stand to
- 2:53lose anymore so I wasn't my. God you literally took yourself
- 2:57out of the game. Yeah, but then one time a kid
- 2:58was like, you did that on purpose.
- 3:00And I was like, no, I didn't, no, no.
- 3:03So I'm running for real now. She's not only a runner, she's a
- 3:07former actress, you guys, child star, she said.
- 3:13Oh, I'm fainting. Wow.
- 3:16I cannot believe that is so. Like of all the awful things
- 3:21that kids do, calling out another kid for lying out of
- 3:27survival? Horrible.
- 3:30If that person is listening, I am not wishing you well.
- 3:33Me neither. And look at you now.
- 3:36I'm a freaking athlete. You're an athlete and you're
- 3:39raising money for women. To own their house, to own
- 3:44their. Houses.
- 3:45That's incredible. We love to see it and you're
- 3:47going on a kind of a cross country journey of your own.
- 3:50Soon you're moving. I'm moving.
- 3:52No, it's not too late to change your mind, just so you know.
- 3:57I think it is. I think my mind might have
- 3:59already been chosen before I visited.
- 4:02OK. But yeah, I'm moving to San
- 4:03Francisco because it's just beautiful and there's a lot of
- 4:07opportunity there right now. So it works out.
- 4:09And I'm excited for the next big thing 'cause I'm from Colorado.
- 4:13So it's like, totally gotta get out of here.
- 4:15It's time to do something different, Yes, as these girls
- 4:18will show us, because you're not a girl, but not yet a woman, and
- 4:23you're gonna go to San Francisco.
- 4:26Actually, I'm not 18. I've been a woman for several
- 4:30years. OK, fine, so maybe our lives are
- 4:35not exactly like crossroads, but they it doesn't it feel like
- 4:40anytime you're on a new journey that you're kind of like with
- 4:44your girls and some random guy who movie would have been way
- 4:49better without him. Yes.
- 4:50Also, you're so good at this. Oh my God.
- 4:53Thank you. You're weaving it in and you're
- 4:57just like, I can't so natural I. Can't help it.
- 5:00I just can't help it. OK?
- 5:03What makes you want to decide to talk about Crossroads?
- 5:07You know, it is just one of those treasures in my life.
- 5:12Yes, I think I saw it for the first time when I was six years
- 5:16old. Yeah.
- 5:17And then, oh, I watched it again last year.
- 5:20And when When you have about 20-4 years under your belt
- 5:25between seeing Crossroads for the first time and the second
- 5:27time, you see the red flags. Oh yeah.
- 5:30And you know, did it age well? Not particularly.
- 5:36Not particularly. Here's why.
- 5:38This is the this is my thesis today.
- 5:40In this essay, I will. In this essay, I will.
- 5:44So basically, like what really is so tragic to me about this
- 5:52film, about Crossroads is that it was at a time in the early
- 5:562000s when we still had so much hope for young pop stars,
- 6:00especially Miss Britney Spears. When we saw this moment of
- 6:07opportunity in spite of all of the toxic, horrible misogyny
- 6:13that was being just railed at her and other girls, but not yet
- 6:19women, not a girl, not girls, not yet women.
- 6:24In spite of all that, there was still so much hope for her, for
- 6:30her career, for her, literally like her coming of age.
- 6:35And then to see that hope at that time and now know, like how
- 6:41the story unfolds is so fucking tragic.
- 6:46And that's what happened to me. Made this movie.
- 6:49I'm like, God, this really this ages with like a real
- 6:53heartbreak. Yeah, on my part.
- 6:56Like watching her make this, like, film debut.
- 7:01I mean, like, the world's right in front of me.
- 7:04I can do anything. I can get away from my
- 7:07overprotective. Dad see it just it's just a
- 7:12stage. Girl.
- 7:17So that was really tough. I really bummed me out.
- 7:21I've been kind. Of when I watched it I didn't
- 7:23like think that hard on that context and now I'm super bummed
- 7:27out. I'm so sorry.
- 7:28And now listener or viewer, now you're bummed, Outlook.
- 7:35We never said it was going to be easy.
- 7:38But we are stronger than yesterday and absolutely.
- 7:43OK, the movie ends. Sorry to go straight to the end,
- 7:47but the movie ends, the credits roll and she's singing the song
- 7:52overprotected. My life has been so see, that's
- 7:56eerie protected. Yikes.
- 8:01That is eerie. It's like, it's like, yeah,
- 8:07spooky, spooky. There we there's the Halloween.
- 8:09It's spooky, Yuki. Halloween time.
- 8:11Yeah, Crossroads is basically perfect for Halloween time
- 8:15because it's spooky. Maybe I should just be Brittany
- 8:17for Halloween. Oh, I absolutely think you
- 8:19should. There's so many variations.
- 8:22Of course I was thinking about having a Brittany themed
- 8:26Brittany themed birthday party, but guess what?
- 8:30I've got another one next year so I can do it.
- 8:33Then you can take that idea. That would be like, well, my
- 8:38birthday just passes well. Well, you have another one
- 8:40coming up next year. You're right.
- 8:43Yeah, and happy late birthday. So sweet.
- 8:47Okay, so yeah, there was so much hope, and then it all comes
- 8:51crumbling. Should we bring it back to the
- 8:53beginning where they do the OK? So like basically it starts out
- 8:57and they are like 3 young girls and they're best friends and
- 9:01they like bury the time capsule, right?
- 9:04Yes, can I? Go ahead.
- 9:06Can I take us on a? Just take me on the.
- 9:08Tour OK, cannot stop using car related metaphors here, so we're
- 9:15taking a detour real quick when I saw this movie with my best
- 9:19friend Andrea. Shout out friend of the pod.
- 9:22She and I decided, you know what, we're going to make a time
- 9:25capsule and we did. And fortunately my mom, like,
- 9:31you know, it's not like if we're going to put, if we're going to
- 9:33buries in the backyard, it's not actually going to, you know, not
- 9:38decompose, right? So my mom like, you know,
- 9:41unearthed it all and like made photocopies of everything and
- 9:45God damn, that was so funny to look back on.
- 9:49And I just recommend everybody make a time capsule with your
- 9:53friends. If you're 10 years old and
- 9:54listening to this, you shouldn't be.
- 9:56But if you are, make a time capsule with your friends and
- 10:00just maybe you'll meet up on graduation night and go on the
- 10:04adventure of a lifetime. That's so fun.
- 10:06I know, right? I feel like my high school did a
- 10:09time capsule or something. I.
- 10:10Feel. Like I have a memory of I was
- 10:13getting to pick what goes in it. Or am I like confusing it with
- 10:16something I've seen? I don't know, That's called
- 10:18source amnesia, but. Oh my God.
- 10:21Wait, can we? Can we?
- 10:22Going back to the movie jump scare, Jamie, Jamie Lynn playing
- 10:27little Britney. She plays little Britney.
- 10:32Wow, that's heavy too. I know because you're growing up
- 10:35in the shadow of Britney and then becoming spiteful to
- 10:38Britney and the whole bit. And the teen pregnancy of it
- 10:42all, 'cause you know, Mimi, Oh my God.
- 10:46Girl, you're making some big connections I didn't even think
- 10:49about. And I watched it right when she
- 10:52got like, it was like Free Britney movement.
- 10:55Everyone was really like jazzed up on it.
- 10:57It was before Netflix bought the rights to Crossroads.
- 11:00So I have it on DVD because you could not find it anywhere
- 11:03online and I don't think it had all sung in enough by that to to
- 11:10extrapolate some of these things.
- 11:12Which is why I'm so glad we're here.
- 11:14Unpacking. Unpacking that suitcase.
- 11:18So, so I had forgotten that. By forgotten, I mean, I never
- 11:25realized because I was a child when I saw this and I did not
- 11:29know who Shonda Rhimes was. I did not know the impact she
- 11:31would have on my life. But Shonda Rhimes wrote the
- 11:36script. Basically, Brittany came up with
- 11:38the idea and Shonda Rhimes was like, I'm a professional, I got
- 11:43you. We're all yeah, yeah, pretty
- 11:45cool. And then the the director, her
- 11:49name is Tamara Davis and she's she did a a lot of music video
- 11:57directing. She has since done a lot of
- 12:01television directing, not a lot of feature films, but.
- 12:06But she's pretty impressive. She's got a pretty, pretty
- 12:09impressive filmography. I love that.
- 12:11Yeah, so anyway. The cast is also pretty stacked.
- 12:16Yeah. So, yeah, what insane they got.
- 12:20So Kim Cattrall, as I mentioned to you when we were walking in
- 12:23today, they got Kim Cattrall because they couldn't get
- 12:26Madonna, who is who they wanted to play Lucy, Britney Spears.
- 12:31And when I think a runner up to Madonna, that's definitely who I
- 12:34could go. I think Carl Samantha Wild.
- 12:42It is wild and it's that woman from Orange is the New Black is
- 12:46in there. I forget her name right now, my
- 12:49apologies. And then if you Saldana, yeah,
- 12:51she's totally listening. Zoe Saldana.
- 12:55Is she in the Marvel Movies Now? She's in the Marvel Movies Now.
- 12:58Yeah, she had blew up. Because when I was first, like
- 13:01when we first rewatched it, I was like, who's in this?
- 13:03Britney Spears, Britney Spears and Britney Spears?
- 13:05Like, in my mind as a child, I was just like triple Britney
- 13:08Spears. But they're real people.
- 13:10They are real people and they had really big careers.
- 13:14Except for The Who is the other girl 'cause the girl from Orange
- 13:16is the New Black isn't the main girl.
- 13:19Right. It's Zoe, Saldana and and then
- 13:22Britney. There's a third.
- 13:25Those are three. Those are three.
- 13:27Zoe Saldana, Britney Spears, and the woman whose name from Orange
- 13:31is the New Black that we're forgetting.
- 13:33But was she the third main girl? Yeah, she was the one that was
- 13:36pregnant, Mimi. And then there was the man.
- 13:42Dude, I really got some guy. This they, they got nominated
- 13:47for like best chemistry and of course they didn't win because
- 13:51there was none. Because there was none.
- 13:53Because he wasn't meant to be there.
- 13:55No, he was a older man who was like, why was he there?
- 13:58Literally why was he there? I just remember rewatching this
- 14:03being so mad that he was along for the ride 'cause he like
- 14:07throws a fucking fit and puts everyone in danger.
- 14:11I don't think 6 year old me definitely didn't pick up on it,
- 14:14but adult me was like these girls are in danger with this
- 14:17man, what are we doing? They're like, oh, I think he
- 14:19killed someone lol. He did not kill someone, but
- 14:21they were kind of just like, oh, you know.
- 14:23No biggie. No big.
- 14:24It's sort of like the casual way that they treat Brad Pitt's
- 14:27character and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood when it's like he
- 14:30might have killed his wife, but who knows?
- 14:32It was a little bit like that. And of course, we learned later
- 14:36he's not dangerous, but he seemed dangerous in that moment
- 14:39when he was throwing a truly a tantrum because he.
- 14:43Yeah. I gotta, I gotta like look at my
- 14:45nose. Do you have any idea what it's
- 14:48like being around girls all the time?
- 14:51He's losing his mind because he's with girls all the time.
- 14:55But meanwhile he's been subjecting them to his boy
- 14:58music. This whole cross country trip.
- 15:02They tried to listen to *NSYNC for like 5 seconds.
- 15:05All it takes is them listening to Shania Twain's man.
- 15:08I feel like a woman to just snap him and say.
- 15:11No this. Man, all I have is the control
- 15:15of this car and listening to my stupid boy music.
- 15:21Do you know it's just I'm just around chicks all the time.
- 15:24There was an idea. We just want to sing and have a
- 15:27nice time. They're like, oh, sorry that we
- 15:29just wanted to have fun. Sorry that Britney's character
- 15:33is a gearhead and knows what's actually wrong with the car.
- 15:36You dumb little idiot. Why was he there?
- 15:40They didn't need a romantic subplot.
- 15:42This is a story about friendship.
- 15:44He did not need to be there. And I also feel like it just
- 15:47taught me a bad lesson. Yeah.
- 15:50Growing up, I did get in the car with a lot of stupid men that I
- 15:54would let take me places, unbeknownst to me.
- 15:57And it's like, what do you? This is what I like.
- 16:00I grew up learning. Yeah.
- 16:02To go across the country with men.
- 16:04Yeah. Who don't want me to play Shania
- 16:07Twain? And that's what's wrong with
- 16:10this country. I feel like this could have been
- 16:14called riding in cars with boys, or really riding in car with
- 16:19boy, if that name was not already going to be used in a
- 16:24different film. I.
- 16:25Don't know if we clarified that we're talking about crossroads
- 16:28from 2002 as well, not of the 1980s.
- 16:31I just assume people only know the one crossroads, but.
- 16:34Yeah, but if you're older than us, you might be thinking of the
- 16:37other one. That's obviously.
- 16:39That's obviously not the case. OK, so the development of this
- 16:46began in late 2000. OK, So in this essay I will.
- 16:50OK, so I need to just like I need to give some context around
- 16:54this. I know that we have just begun
- 16:55talking about the movie. We are currently at the time
- 16:58capsule, but let me just take us back to 911.
- 17:07OK, so so you know 911 it happens.
- 17:12The entire country is like we need trash gossip information.
- 17:19No bad news. I just need to see underskirt
- 17:25pictures of teen girls. These celebrities, I need to see
- 17:30their midriffs. I need to know who they're
- 17:32dating. I need to know who they're
- 17:33fucking. I need to know what drugs
- 17:35they're doing. I need to know how skinny they
- 17:37are. And this like this monster of
- 17:43publicity was like reborn. And it's crazy that like the
- 17:48development of this movie started before that era.
- 17:53And then it was like by the time it came out in 2002, we were so
- 17:58deep in that early aughts. Let me just say like pop girls,
- 18:06virgins and whores era, you know where they are really both at
- 18:12the same time and always losing. Isn't that the truth?
- 18:17Ain't that the truth? And Britney's character is a
- 18:22virgin who, for reasons unknown, Justin Long apparently has a
- 18:30chance with. That was, you know, in a movie
- 18:34that is not exactly, like, realistic.
- 18:38That was a moment where I could not suspend my disbelief.
- 18:41I said there is no way you're trying to convince me that
- 18:46Britney Spears is like, she's just like a pretty nerd who is
- 18:55like being coerced into sex by Justin Long, who thought he had
- 18:58a chance. And he's, he's so little.
- 19:03He's just. So little.
- 19:05He's just a tiny little thing. He's a little guy just doing his
- 19:08best. Tiny, tiny little guy.
- 19:10That was tough, but I didn't like, I didn't like that he had
- 19:15a list of reasons as to why she should sleep with him.
- 19:21Don't they all? Don't they all?
- 19:24But I did like that eventually it does show us.
- 19:29It's like, well, OK, the message is, yeah, begging is coercion,
- 19:34she decides. Actually, no, my heart's not in
- 19:37this. This isn't the way I want to go
- 19:39down. I don't want to do it with my
- 19:41dweevy lab partner. Good on her.
- 19:44Good on her. So then, I wish I had taken that
- 19:48lesson away from the whole thing.
- 19:51That whole thing, yeah, that begging is coercion.
- 19:53And that's not OK. They didn't tell us explicitly,
- 19:57but he was very like in that American Pie mindset where he's
- 20:01like, I can't go to College of. Virgin, do you know?
- 20:04How hard this will be for me if I don't have sex at you, you
- 20:09know? Yeah, so a huge shout out to
- 20:17sponsor of Dude IDK Spider Moving and Storage.
- 20:21I recently used them to move into my new place and couldn't
- 20:25be happier with how efficient they were.
- 20:27They were so kind, they made it look so easy and it was just top
- 20:31notch experience. So definitely recommend that you
- 20:34check them out if you've got a move coming up.
- 20:36Residential, commercial, local, cross country, anything in
- 20:40between. You can get a free quote at
- 20:42spidermoving.com and you can give them a follow on social
- 20:46media at Spider Moving and storage.
- 20:50So then they go back to the time capsule as high school
- 20:56graduates. And Kit, that's her name, right?
- 21:02Kit The Zoe's held on his character.
- 21:05Pretty sure it is. Yes, it is.
- 21:09Let's get the notes. So Kit's wish was to be a bridal
- 21:15Barbie, Lucy's wish was to find her mom again, and Mimi wish for
- 21:22the world. She's a little key chain with a
- 21:24globe on it. She wanted to travel the world.
- 21:27Now she's knocked up. Never travel again.
- 21:31She can never with a child. Did you know that you can?
- 21:35Did you know that your life is over when you have a baby?
- 21:38So you know how like, going through the airport is hard.
- 21:43Imagine having a baby trying to do that.
- 21:48It's tough. I could do that.
- 21:49I could, I could. I feel like I have had practice
- 21:53though. When my my cousins were little,
- 21:54I used to have to get ready to go visit dad so.
- 21:59So and you still lived life, but she but look, she's 18.
- 22:05She's like damn. She'll persist.
- 22:08We all do. She's the one that's like, I'm
- 22:11going to go to LA. They were like, you're pregnant,
- 22:14how are you going to do this audition for this recording
- 22:18studio? And she said, I'll wear
- 22:19something slimming. And I thought that was so funny.
- 22:23I said, that's Shonda Rhimes. That's my girl writing.
- 22:27That was so good. OK, so then they like, look at a
- 22:34photo of themselves and they're like, OK, I guess we should go
- 22:38on this road trip. Let's go to LA.
- 22:42Kit is going to go visit her college fiance, who we already
- 22:46know is cheating on her because her friends were like, oh, I bet
- 22:49he's cheating on you. And she was like, he would
- 22:51never. So we know that he's cheating on
- 22:53her and and Lucy, Britney's character, she's going to Tucson
- 23:01to meet her mom, Kim Cattrall. And Mimi is going to go to this
- 23:06audition, which by the end of the movie, it's actually not her
- 23:09audition at all. It's Lucy.
- 23:13She is literally a backup singer.
- 23:18But what really summed up this whole movie is when Britney
- 23:22walks up to the car and there's the guy there, and she goes,
- 23:27who's the guy? I said I know that's right.
- 23:34I also was like, OK, I just didn't find him particularly
- 23:38attractive either, so it was like so funny to like, put him
- 23:42in that role. I mean, if he's going to throw a
- 23:44fit in the middle of nowhere, he's going to be damn handsome.
- 23:47I know he was like just. He's just a man.
- 23:52He was. Just not that interesting to me.
- 23:54Yeah, yeah. So that's that.
- 23:58That don't impress me much. OK.
- 24:04So they they talk about how he might have killed somebody,
- 24:09whatever. Very.
- 24:10Casual. Whatever.
- 24:11Casually, they're talking about how he might, Yeah.
- 24:12I feel like I was very worried when I heard that and that was I
- 24:15was like, wait, is this a Miss a Murderer mystery?
- 24:18I forgot about this like. OK, wait, now I'm getting.
- 24:22I need to. This is insane.
- 24:24I watched this two day, but I've only got a couple brain cells
- 24:28left that we're working with. So when Bowling For Soup was
- 24:32playing at their graduation party, there was a guitarist who
- 24:35Zoe Saldana was like, oh, he's hot.
- 24:38And they were like, oh, I think he killed somebody.
- 24:41Was it the same guy or was it a different guy?
- 24:45Were they like? Was that?
- 24:46Were they trying to be like a cold bot?
- 24:48No, it was that was at the maybe I don't know.
- 24:52It doesn't matter there. It was more than once they
- 24:56brought up some guy being like he might have killed somebody.
- 25:02So that's too bad he didn't, but still, they weren't worried
- 25:06enough. So Lucy is sort of the one
- 25:12that's she gets really good grades.
- 25:14She was the valedictorian. Her, her dad is very Aww
- 25:20protective, you know, and she's like she's a virgin and
- 25:27everyone's like, ha ha, you're a virgin.
- 25:30And then Kit is like she's like the hot shit.
- 25:33She's popular. She's got body image issues.
- 25:38She's got a mom who's always telling her to lose weight.
- 25:40And then there's Mimi who's like she grew up in the trailer park.
- 25:44She's knocked up. She's got eyeliner for sure.
- 25:51She's got eyeliner and she's using.
- 25:53It really all-encompassing of the female experience.
- 25:56Yes, these OK, these girls, as we learned throughout the film,
- 26:02they all have like there's a little something for every every
- 26:06girl on the surface, it's like, OK, like which one are you?
- 26:10Like, are you a Lucy or a kid or a Mimi?
- 26:13But it's more like which is your trauma?
- 26:15Is your trauma like? Is your trauma like body
- 26:19dysmorphia, being sexually assaulted, or being abandoned by
- 26:23your mom? Couldn't get in all three.
- 26:27Yeah, and a lot, I think, you know, it is not mutually
- 26:31exclusive. What are you?
- 26:32What are you? You know, that's a good
- 26:36question. I don't really have like, I
- 26:39mean, OK, I know that everybody has trauma.
- 26:41Like, of course, I have trauma, but like, nothing really bad
- 26:45enough happened to me to make me, like, as messed up as I am.
- 26:49And sometimes I think it would be a lot easier if I could just
- 26:53be like, well, yeah, like, you know, my mom can control.
- 26:56That's me when I was three years old.
- 26:59But I had my parents were very lovely, very supportive.
- 27:03So yeah, I think I related to all.
- 27:05I had a little trauma from each pool.
- 27:07Oh yeah, yeah, totally. Totally.
- 27:10I mean, yeah. I mean, literally any, any girl,
- 27:15really any person, but especially the girls who lived
- 27:19in the early 2000s or were alive at any time, actually probably
- 27:26can relate to Zoe Saldana. This like very thin woman being
- 27:30like, yeah, my, I hate my body and my mom's always telling me
- 27:37to lose weight, you know? So yeah, I feel like that's kind
- 27:41of a, a really universal one. They're really speaking to all
- 27:45the girls. Yeah, but that one, they were
- 27:46like, let's think about what one woman experiences and divvy it
- 27:50up into three prototypes. And they did.
- 27:56It and they did it. And what a, what a goddamn
- 28:00miracle that is. Because this, this movie is
- 28:03about having fun. But they they go to a hotel room
- 28:07and they literally say, what's the worst thing that ever
- 28:09happened to you? And I've been like, that is
- 28:11actual female friendship. You get into a room and you say,
- 28:15so what's the worst thing that ever happened to you?
- 28:17Let's. Trauma bond.
- 28:19And they did they like they worked through some shit out on
- 28:23the road and I loved it for them.
- 28:27I thought that like, yes, we could call it trauma bonding or
- 28:32we could say these women not. Girls, but not girls.
- 28:38Not girls, but not quite women. They they had a history with
- 28:43each other, you know, they've known each other since they were
- 28:45little kids. And they were basically like,
- 28:46let's catch up on whatever fucked up shit happened to you
- 28:50in the past, you know, 10 to 15 years and let's talk about it.
- 28:57Let's figure some things out. That's sweet, you know.
- 28:59Do men do that on road? What do you?
- 29:03What do they do on the road? Does that happen on road trips
- 29:06with that, OK, now we've. Made speaking on behalf of men
- 29:10can confirm that that does not happen on.
- 29:12Road trips. If you think otherwise I would
- 29:14love to hear about it though if you're a man who's that's your
- 29:17now. You got you've gone Rd. trips
- 29:19with your childhood friends and say what's the worst thing that
- 29:23ever? Happened to you.
- 29:23Hey guys, let's talk. Yeah, Could you get some good?
- 29:27I'm just saying it works out well for these girls.
- 29:32OK, so then we find out that the boy has trauma too though.
- 29:40And here's the thing. It was sad, but I didn't care
- 29:44because I was sort of like, this is about the girls and their
- 29:47trauma and you're kind of you've inserted yourself on this trip
- 29:52because he's just some guy that Mimi pregnant.
- 29:56Mimi knows from the trailer part like she grew up with him and he
- 30:01has a car. So she's like, he's coming on
- 30:03the trip. That's it.
- 30:05I've been Mimi. You brought some random guy who
- 30:08did not need to be there on the. Trail so many times.
- 30:11So many times, as I said, riding in cars with boys.
- 30:14That is what they should have called it.
- 30:17They should have. Drew Barrymore should have come
- 30:20up with a different vault, but it shouldn't.
- 30:22I would love a reboot. Yes, it didn't.
- 30:26Seem like no I do. I do.
- 30:29I do. I do want that.
- 30:30Where Britney is the long lost mom in Italy.
- 30:34Oh my God, that's but here's The thing is that like I think it
- 30:38would be too. It would be too sad.
- 30:40We might need some time in between, but I feel like there's
- 30:43like potential to foreshadow a new life for Britney through
- 30:46Crossroads reboot. All she needs is time, a moment
- 30:49that is mine while she's in between.
- 30:52How come as a 7 year old I related so hard?
- 30:54Like I was like I am not a woman yet.
- 30:57I'm seven, I'm 7. Girl, same.
- 31:00When I heard that song, I was like, yeah, I feel that.
- 31:05That was a good album too, and also their love is like the
- 31:08movie was kind of just like a promo piece for that.
- 31:12Album and like explicitly was they were like this album is the
- 31:18accompanying soundtrack like there was also the Crossroad
- 31:21soundtrack but they're like that's not really the
- 31:23soundtrack. The real soundtrack is Britney's
- 31:26album so. I knew that.
- 31:30So good for them and good for Britney.
- 31:34But one thing that's interesting about so the relationship
- 31:39between Britney Spears and the guy, I don't even care what I
- 31:42don't remember what his name was.
- 31:43I don't care. They do kind of they end up like
- 31:46having a fling and she does like end up having sex with him,
- 31:51which like it's fine and great. This is coming.
- 31:54This is coming of age story. He shouldn't have been on the
- 31:58trip anyway. But I'm not going to fault her
- 31:59for being like, you know what? I got to?
- 32:03I can't go to a College of virgin.
- 32:05That was not her motivation. And I was glad she was like,
- 32:07this is this is what I want. It's like very different from
- 32:12the beginning of the movie when she's with little boy Justin
- 32:15Long, who's like, we should have sex because we've been laugh
- 32:18partners for three years. But the film was actually
- 32:24criticized by some people for not promoting safe sex, to which
- 32:31Britney Spears responded. Quote.
- 32:32I think by the time my character Lucy decides to Make Love in the
- 32:37film, the audience realizes she's responsible enough and
- 32:40hopefully did do that. There was a scene where I took
- 32:43out a box of condoms, but they took that scene out because the
- 32:46movie was too long. That's good PR.
- 32:50So like, yeah, I just think everyone was blaming Britney for
- 32:56being like, it's like Brit showed her mid drift too much.
- 32:59That was the. Why didn't the man bring the
- 33:02look? I get they cut it, but why isn't
- 33:04he catching the flock? Why does Britney have to respond
- 33:08for Lucy? It's his Dick.
- 33:09Come on. Thank you.
- 33:11So. Here's the thing, reading the
- 33:14reviews of this movie put me in a dark place because critics are
- 33:20like, not only is this movie dumb because it's for girls, but
- 33:25it's just Britney Spears burying her midriff for an entire movie.
- 33:31What's crazy is I didn't even notice.
- 33:33Yeah, Isn't that crazy? Isn't that crazy how you just
- 33:36sometimes, sometimes you just don't even notice.
- 33:39But they were noticing in. Very scandalous.
- 33:43So scandalous. So.
- 33:46You know, since then there are some critics who have kind of
- 33:48like revisited it and said, OK, you know what?
- 33:51I take it back, it wasn't that bad.
- 33:53But for the most part, despite its commercial success, it was
- 33:57only made on a $12 million budget.
- 34:00And they made like 60 million not.
- 34:04Bad for a piece of promo for your album, that's a pretty good
- 34:07killing and. You know what the director of
- 34:09this film was? A music video director.
- 34:13What if? What is Crossroads if not a
- 34:15really long and interesting music video?
- 34:17OK, what's the problem? With the IT is, I think it's
- 34:20produced by MTV as well, so I feel like that just makes sense.
- 34:23It's like, OK, it's. What are they expecting?
- 34:28It's gonna be hot. There's gonna be mid drifts and
- 34:32some singing. Yeah, some.
- 34:35I love rock'n'roll cover. Yeah.
- 34:37Which was great. That was.
- 34:39Great. That's the best scene probably,
- 34:40yeah. Which is the center element.
- 34:42Oh yeah, it's. The one right, right behind you
- 34:44on the TV screen and oh. It is her.
- 34:47Yeah. God, she isn't.
- 34:49She didn't age kind of like she's, she looks kind of the
- 34:53same. I didn't realize she was old
- 34:54enough to have been in this. So I was like, she can't be one
- 35:00of the babes. You're like, no, she must be one
- 35:02of the one of the. Children of.
- 35:03The children, yeah. Yeah, I think I liked her the
- 35:08best. I think I liked Mimi the best of
- 35:11the three because she's just. Tough, yeah.
- 35:14Tough Broad. I liked that about.
- 35:16That trailer park attitude. Yeah, she teaches Zoe Saldana
- 35:20how to throw a punch. She's like, I think every woman
- 35:22should know how to throw a punch.
- 35:24I love that, I said. I think that's great.
- 35:26I don't know how to throw a punch if anyone.
- 35:27'S like to teach me. Is it you don't want to?
- 35:30I think it's like this. Yeah, you don't want to put your
- 35:32thumb on the inside because then.
- 35:34You break it, you could break it someone's first.
- 35:36Yeah, if you're strong. Enough.
- 35:38If you're strong enough, prove it.
- 35:42I could see you becoming like like a kickboxing girl like that
- 35:48could be your next. My next endeavor?
- 35:50Yeah. Let me get a little more juice
- 35:52up on the running and lifting and then we'll see if my yeah,
- 35:55tiny arms can handle it. I think they can.
- 35:58You can. Oh my God.
- 36:00Oh, thank you. Thank you so much.
- 36:02Yeah, I think that you could. And here's the thing.
- 36:05If not, you can always run away if someone's coming for you.
- 36:09You can. I'm gonna learn how to throw a
- 36:10punch and then come back and we'll teach everyone.
- 36:13And we'll teach everyone together.
- 36:15Yes. When you come back to visit.
- 36:16Yes. OK, Good.
- 36:20There was another thing that I wanted to say about the making
- 36:23of this movie. I know that I'm so all over the
- 36:25place, but, you know, sometimes you gotta take the road.
- 36:28Less trouble. Sorry.
- 36:33I'm so sorry. But Britney Spears described
- 36:36this as a teen movie that dealt with real issues that normal
- 36:40teenagers live on a daily basis. And then she said would explain
- 36:46the film's content quote that it is about this journey that the
- 36:51three of us best friends take, finding ourselves and what we
- 36:53want out of life and getting our friendship back.
- 36:56Friends are all you have at the end of the day.
- 36:58When your boyfriend breaks up with you, who do you call?
- 37:00Your girlfriend? I just love that message.
- 37:03And I said, yeah, you do. Friends are all we have.
- 37:08I love that. That's sweet.
- 37:10I know for the girls. So throughout the film, these
- 37:16three girls who kind of like, you know, had drifted apart over
- 37:19time. They keep getting they keep
- 37:21getting closer. They keep finding their roots.
- 37:23They keep having these like fights where they're like
- 37:27unearthing some of their long held resentments, but they're
- 37:31working them out. I'm like, yeah, you guys fight
- 37:34about it. Let's go like get.
- 37:35It out. So that you can like, move
- 37:38through it. And I thought they did a good
- 37:39job of that, too. Like, they didn't show these
- 37:41girls as like, you know, passive aggressive or as, like, they
- 37:47weren't like, wow, look how rude they are.
- 37:49It was just like, these are girls who have hurt each other,
- 37:53built resentments against each other because they've been
- 37:56pitted against one another. And now look at them working it
- 37:59out on the road. Yeah, I feel like if I had also
- 38:03taken away from that, that would have been very helpful in my
- 38:05life, yeah. If only one thing I did take
- 38:11away from this, though, was always be writing poems in your
- 38:15little journal. She is always Lucy, the the one
- 38:20Britney Spears plays. She's always writing in our
- 38:22journal. And then finally the guy is
- 38:24like, what are you always writing in your journal?
- 38:27She's like poems, Mesley. And then the poem, I'm not a
- 38:32girl, not a girl, not yet a woman does become the song.
- 38:36And when she's just reading it out of her little notebook, I'm
- 38:39like, well, it's actually like, that's pretty.
- 38:43That's like, really not bad. Like when you say it like that,
- 38:47I know. I just recently read some of my
- 38:51my poetry from when I was like around 12:00-ish at Mortified,
- 38:59the show here locally. And I'll just say it was not, it
- 39:04was not as good as the lyrics of I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.
- 39:08And yes, of course, at that point, like this character is
- 39:1118, but I'm still like, that wasn't bad.
- 39:13That's so funny. But I did, I did take note of
- 39:17that behavior, and I was always writing stuff in my little
- 39:20notebook, just like Britney. I feel so.
- 39:22This is so funny with the timing.
- 39:24I feel like, OK, like this. Earlier this week I literally
- 39:28bought a tiny spiral notebook and we've been writing poetry.
- 39:31Oh. My God, are you kidding me?
- 39:33You've like got your little field notes and you're like,
- 39:35yeah. There's little hummingbirds on
- 39:37the front, but I was just like, I what?
- 39:39I was looking for a Mary Oliver book.
- 39:41This is a total side tangent that I've read before to like
- 39:44gift to somebody. And then while I was at the
- 39:47bookstore, I saw Pablo Naruto's love poems, which like he wrote
- 39:52to his wife. And it was a book that I used to
- 39:55have, like I had borrowed in college from her friend and gave
- 39:57back. So I was like, I'm going to buy
- 39:58that too. And then I was like, I'm going
- 40:00to just like, I kind of miss writing poems.
- 40:02And I feel like it's like everything is like always has to
- 40:05be shared to online. So I'm like, it's nice that it's
- 40:07like in a cute little secret book.
- 40:09And like, so now I'm like affirmed.
- 40:13The universe is like now you have to write poetry because of
- 40:15crossroads. That is so incredible.
- 40:18No, you started say that I was like, this is weird.
- 40:22Wow. But no, it is so cool.
- 40:24And like when I was a kid, I wrote a lot of poems and songs
- 40:27and stuff. I also like I have this journal
- 40:30where the intro is like, my name is Melissa Leavenworth.
- 40:33I'm 14 years old. I'm from Aurora, Co, and I hate
- 40:36George W Bush. That's the intro.
- 40:42I'm real strong. That is, that was the birth of
- 40:46an icon. Yeah, I miss writing.
- 40:47Like, you type everything now. So it's like there's something
- 40:50so, like, nice about writing. And even when it's not like
- 40:53journaling, poems are like small and sweet and they just be like
- 40:56a little inspo from the day. I hate when they get like, stuck
- 41:00in your phone as text messages forever.
- 41:03Totally. So I'm like just write
- 41:04something. And then I like look back at my
- 41:06notes, like my notes app and I'm like stupid.
- 41:10Yeah, and I also feel like after being in comedy and writing
- 41:12jokes and shit, that's just so like, absurdist, which I love or
- 41:18like, just like, so not sweet. Like poetry is just such like a
- 41:22nice indulgence. I don't know.
- 41:25And Lucy knew that. Exactly.
- 41:27I know you're going to bring it back.
- 41:28You're so good. Oh my God, thank you.
- 41:31But I really am kind of like, I'm kind of like gooped and
- 41:34gagged that this is happening for you right now.
- 41:38Incredible. So there's one, there's one
- 41:43thing that you you probably won't remember off the top of
- 41:47your head, but maybe if I describe it, you will.
- 41:51They're all in the car. And Mimi, the pregnant one,
- 41:56she's getting her hair braided by Zoe Saldana.
- 42:00And she's getting like, you know, white girl.
- 42:03I just went to Mexico braids and part of me was like, that really
- 42:07doesn't age well. And also it is Zoe Saldana doing
- 42:13her hair. It's like, wow.
- 42:14Oh, it might have aged better than not totally unwell.
- 42:20Yeah, I mean, obviously it's like, it wasn't actually like.
- 42:26So it was like a director's choice, right?
- 42:28Probably to be like Oh yeah, braid her hair but.
- 42:32Yeah, I wonder how intentional it was to.
- 42:34I mean, if it seems like an intentional choice.
- 42:37Right. Yeah.
- 42:38Because, like, I mean, that is such a, it is such like an
- 42:44evocative image, right? Like girls braiding each other's
- 42:49hair. It's like, that's the, that's
- 42:52the standard. Yeah.
- 42:54But she's braiding her hair in a way that's like, oh.
- 42:57Shit. Oh, sorry, the alarm, the alarm
- 43:00is going off. It's.
- 43:02For my. Probiotics.
- 43:03Hotties take their probiotics, everybody.
- 43:05So do you need to take your probiotics right now?
- 43:08It's in the fridge at work. I'll.
- 43:09Get there later, we'll get it later, but don't forget I just
- 43:14recently learned that there's prebiotics.
- 43:19Yeah. Probiotics and then I went to I
- 43:22went to Sprouts the other day and I saw post try biotics.
- 43:26I said there's more than what's the third probably post post
- 43:32biotics. I don't know.
- 43:34I looked at it. I said it's too much.
- 43:36It's too much information overload.
- 43:39I don't like when they advertise it as they're alive.
- 43:42It makes me feel really weird. Help.
- 43:44I don't mean. When they're like, it's alive.
- 43:47I mean, it's alive, that's it. Can we talk about a value prop?
- 43:51Yes, thank you, thank you. It like.
- 43:53It's funny, you could use it in like a tagline to like, you
- 43:57know, make it stand out to get people's attention.
- 43:59But like it's alive is not it's not selling me.
- 44:05It's certainly not making me choose one probiotic.
- 44:08Over another host. I know no.
- 44:11Bacterias, I know, just like that man and.
- 44:16Just like that man, he said. I don't.
- 44:19Don't you understand what it's like to spend all your time with
- 44:21girls? Don't you understand what it's
- 44:23like to spend all your time with the three of them?
- 44:26You're a Tri biotic or whatever? Yeah, if it makes you happy, if
- 44:37you weren't seen along during that scene when the girls are
- 44:43just going off, I don't know what's wrong with you.
- 44:47You got neurotransmitter deficiencies.
- 44:49For sure. You got to get some probiotics
- 44:51or something for that. Wow, you know what is?
- 44:55So one thing that's really fucked up and brings the whole
- 45:00movie full circle is Zoe Saldana shows up at the door of her
- 45:07shitty fiance who we already know is cheating on her.
- 45:11We find out that he's the one that sexually assaulted Mimi,
- 45:16the one who was pregnant. She's like, it was you.
- 45:19And it's, you know what? Because she believes women, she
- 45:25doesn't side with him. She isn't like, Oh my God, like.
- 45:28He would never. He would never.
- 45:30She's like I, I'm with her I'm with.
- 45:35My brother. I haven't even been friends with
- 45:37her for like 10 years, but I'm with her good and I thought that
- 45:42was really important. Yeah, yeah, that is important.
- 45:48But she does. Fall down the stairs and then
- 45:49have a miscarriage. Well, they couldn't show
- 45:53abortion, that's also true. And they had to free her up to
- 45:56live her life because you can't. Because otherwise.
- 45:59Because you cannot travel. She wanted the world.
- 46:01She cannot. Travel you.
- 46:02You just can't. The laws of gravity does don't
- 46:05allow. Yeah, that's true.
- 46:09Actually, when you're when after you have a baby, you are
- 46:13bedridden. For the rest of your life, Yeah,
- 46:15it's crazy. Except for pick up and drop off
- 46:18at school. That's true, yes.
- 46:19They let you out for that, which is kind of nice.
- 46:21It's a nice reprieve. Yeah, thank God.
- 46:24That's why pick up and drop off is so chaotic.
- 46:26And coveted like we've. Never been out of the house,
- 46:29we're not allowed to do anything or go anywhere.
- 46:35So then they're finally in LA. Everything is fucked.
- 46:40You know, Mimi's had a miscarriage, kids just learned
- 46:48that her boyfriend is a rapist and that he's cheating on her.
- 46:52These are very heavy themes for a teen movie.
- 46:55Lucy's finds out that her mom literally didn't want her.
- 47:00I mean, it's Samantha. It kind of checks Outlook.
- 47:04She had a new family. She didn't need her anymore.
- 47:07She's. Like, Oh yeah, you.
- 47:09She's like Lucy. What are you doing here?
- 47:14And she keeps saying why do you keep saying my name like I love
- 47:19that. So things are bad.
- 47:23Things have taken a turn for the worse for all three of our
- 47:25girls. And then Dan Aykroyd, who plays
- 47:30pretty stad what I get I. Know it's like.
- 47:36He played it so earnestly too, and I really appreciated that,
- 47:40that he didn't treat it like, oh, this is just camp.
- 47:43He was like, I'm playing a dad. This is what I do.
- 47:47This is what I do. I'm Dan Aykroyd.
- 47:49I show up for work and he did. So he he shows up and he's like,
- 47:55all right, Lucy, time to go home.
- 47:57And she basically says, that's not my dream dad, that's your
- 48:02dream, tells him, don't make me leave you like mom did.
- 48:07Let me go. Just a real gut punch.
- 48:12She punched Dan Aykroyd right in that gut.
- 48:17But the girls are like, yeah, let's go, go to the audition
- 48:20now. You're the star.
- 48:21This actually is not about Mimi at all anymore.
- 48:24It is not her audition. Fuck Mimi.
- 48:26Fuck Mimi, she'll be fine. She'll be about.
- 48:28Baby free now. She is baby.
- 48:29Free, so she has a whole life ahead.
- 48:31She can go travel the world. That's it.
- 48:36Her dream? That's her dream, the world.
- 48:40And so then she performs, I'm not a girl, not yet a woman,
- 48:43with the support of the guy and some a band that he's gathered
- 48:49for the audition. And Dan Aykroyd is there in the
- 48:53crowd saying, yeah, go Lucy. And they have the whole their
- 48:59whole lives ahead of them. They put together a time
- 49:02capsule, not of their future plans, but to put away the past.
- 49:08And I said. I love that it's kind of cute
- 49:10too. They're like look.
- 49:12Bury, bury it, beeped out. Bury it way down.
- 49:16We've we've brought it up now. Time to put it back down.
- 49:22We dug, literally dug it out of the ground.
- 49:24We're gonna put it right back. Yeah, let it decompose.
- 49:26Let it decompose, get it. They put they buried it like in
- 49:31on the beach. So it's like it's just gonna go.
- 49:33I think the first one too was buried like 2 inches below.
- 49:36You're just like. That's not.
- 49:38Like, OK, so you put it in a plastic bag, it's not gonna
- 49:40make, it's not gonna preserve it for 10 years.
- 49:44So yeah, they, that was going straight and that was garbage
- 49:48going straight into the ocean. But you know, it was the
- 49:50thought. They counted.
- 49:52It was all about the thought. And at that point, it's like,
- 49:57who cares where they end up? Like, we know that there's just
- 50:01like so much hope. It's like they can do anything
- 50:04now. I didn't need to know whether
- 50:08whether Lucy's character was going to stay with the guy.
- 50:12I didn't need to know where everyone was going to college.
- 50:15I just knew, like, these girls can do anything.
- 50:19And that is why it's so sad that we saw how it actually.
- 50:25Because in my mind, I'm like, obviously Lucy doesn't end up
- 50:27with that, man. It's far worse.
- 50:29She ends up locked in her home for many years.
- 50:36I do sometimes just check on Brittany to see how things are.
- 50:40I also remember, like when we were watching Crossroads, I was
- 50:43like, like the thing about the the knife dancing is that like,
- 50:47she's always danced like that. Now it's just with knives.
- 50:50So now it's alarming. But before it was the same
- 50:53moves. Yeah, it was the same moves.
- 50:57She's it's still a little strange on the insty.
- 51:00Yeah, totally. How could it not be?
- 51:02I think she was recently reunited with her son though or
- 51:04something again or yeah I'm not sure.
- 51:07Sweet. We do wish Britney the best.
- 51:10Also the fact that that came to light through like a podcast is
- 51:14pretty crazy. And brown circle.
- 51:18It really is. You know what we need to bring
- 51:23black blooper reels. I need a blooper reel at the end
- 51:27of my movie. From now on.
- 51:30I need a music video layered with.
- 51:35A blooper reel? Why did Why did we stop doing
- 51:37blooper reels? Come on, give us a laugh, even
- 51:40if it's staged. You know I don't.
- 51:42Care if it's staged, just give me a blooper reel I feel.
- 51:45Like Marvel ruined the blooper reel.
- 51:47Oh my God with like people waiting for the credits to end
- 51:50for that. Like that last little scene?
- 51:53Yeah, and the last little scene is not goops and gags.
- 51:56It's just like A twist ending. It's just.
- 51:58A cliffhanger it's. Not like behind the scenes,
- 52:00like, yeah, you know, lames are lame.
- 52:04Do you take your probiotics? I feel.
- 52:07Like you wouldn't be going off again.
- 52:08I sat one for no see. It's it's, it thinks that I want
- 52:13to snooze because that's all that I do.
- 52:17I see. It's a classic.
- 52:19It's the classic hit snooze instead of off, hit off instead
- 52:22of snooze. But you know what it's better to
- 52:27have? Oh.
- 52:28Get your meds from the fridge. Yeah, and we're not anywhere
- 52:33near the fridge. No, because.
- 52:34It's at work. We're a drive away from it.
- 52:37Yeah, unfortunately. But I was like, 810 will be on
- 52:40time. That was hilarious.
- 52:43That was really funny. But you thought that.
- 52:45Thank you so much. I was just like, yeah, time is
- 52:48hard. Girl, ain't that the truth?
- 52:51Ain't that the truth? Well, gosh, this movie was.
- 52:59It had it all. Friendship.
- 53:02Love. Parents abandonment.
- 53:09Virginity. Trauma.
- 53:13There was a lot of trauma. A ton of trauma.
- 53:15It was very like for a film that is again, like not realistic or
- 53:22feels like so formulaic. These characters really had
- 53:26depth of experience. They were not what they seemed
- 53:30on the surface. They really had a lot, a lot
- 53:33going on and their stories were worth exploring.
- 53:37Like stories like this are not really told anymore.
- 53:41Stories of like just teenage girls and what they're going
- 53:46through and like this coming of age tale that's just about like
- 53:51friendship. It's just movies like this don't
- 53:55get funded. Anymore.
- 53:57Not even for. Not even for pop stars.
- 54:02I know I'm trying to think of anything and that's similar and
- 54:05the closest I can come to is as told by Ginger.
- 54:09Yeah, and that was? I think that ages perfectly.
- 54:15Oh my God, absolutely. That's not the episode we're
- 54:17doing, but it is very good. It is.
- 54:19Honestly perfect it is. I love as told by Ginger.
- 54:22Me too. It's amazing, it's comforting.
- 54:25Ladybird was kind of. This ah ladybird was good.
- 54:29Yeah, because, you know, it's got like the the trauma with the
- 54:32parents, but also like it's complicated and it's about
- 54:37female friendship. And then there's a guy who
- 54:39inserts himself and then they decide that he's not worth it.
- 54:42Is that? Timothy Shell.
- 54:43Yeah. God, I remember the.
- 54:45Yeah, that's probably the first thing I saw.
- 54:46What a what? A uprising of Timmy.
- 54:49Yeah, but but that that was a, it wasn't really like a.
- 54:58God, should we make a indie film?
- 54:59Oh. My God, does anyone want to fund
- 55:02or film does? Anyone want to fund an indie
- 55:04film? It could be about running
- 55:09brands. OK, hello Brands.
- 55:12I don't run but but I can if I'm being chased for a little while.
- 55:18I have plantar fasciitis. It's really or if I'm being paid
- 55:22I will, I will put my chronic injury to the side.
- 55:27I could do a story about girlhood in chronic injuries and
- 55:33ableism. Oh.
- 55:34My God and ableism. That's the formula.
- 55:38That's the formula. We'll talk.
- 55:40All right, we'll. We'll be in discussions.
- 55:42All right, we'll be in discussion.
- 55:43Thunders Sharks will be coming. Yeah.
- 55:48So did did this movie age Well, Yeah.
- 55:51And no, it, it's like we, it really was important for me to.
- 55:58I don't know why I feel like I'm so self center to me and like
- 56:00this was so important for me to watch like I'm in my 30s no.
- 56:05I think actually, after hearing you, I think that when I watched
- 56:08it like the most, like I watched it maybe about a year ago, but
- 56:11I'm like, I don't think I think hearing your take on it makes me
- 56:16feel like it aged a little better than I thought.
- 56:18Yeah. It had because my focus was like
- 56:22this man is dangerous. These girls are are in danger,
- 56:25yes, and this is terrible. We would never do this anymore,
- 56:30but. I don't just like, get in a car
- 56:31with a stranger. The girlhood parts are actually
- 56:34very endearing and I think are very important, like the growing
- 56:38through, I think the healthy dialogue, I think the healthy
- 56:41arguing. Yes, they are not not conflict
- 56:44averse. Yeah, and I love that about.
- 56:46That, and that's what that's what girlhood needs is like, we
- 56:49need to be able to like talk about some shit and sort it out
- 56:53and get a little angry with each other sometimes and then be
- 56:55like, all right, we forgive each other, yeah.
- 56:58And move on. Right.
- 56:59Like yeah, I think that is important.
- 57:02Yeah, if only we learned those lessons when we watched it, you
- 57:06know? Yeah, it took me short of time.
- 57:08No, not at all. That's not what I took away.
- 57:10No, I was like my whole life. Yes, makes sense and I do and
- 57:21she does follow her on Instagram.
- 57:25Melissa Lanell. Melissa Lanell, What else?
- 57:29What else do we need to discuss? You waiting for the photo photo
- 57:36to come back. The outfits are good.
- 57:38Look at look at that mid drift. Yeah, I think that's it.
- 57:42Yeah. It's just covered it.
- 57:44The movie is kind of like 4 scenes if you like.
- 57:49It was, yeah. There's a good amount of filler,
- 57:52I think. No, it's great.
- 57:55I think that's perfect. Yeah, gosh, I'd love to hear
- 58:01what all of you think about Crossroads.
- 58:03You can rewatch it. It's on Hulu.
- 58:04I know that we're not watching Hulu right now because we're,
- 58:09you know, kind of taking a stand against Disney Plus and CBS and,
- 58:14like, the whole empire. I have the DVD if anyone wants
- 58:17but if. You need the DVD.
- 58:18Or if you're like me and you don't subscribe to Hulu but you
- 58:22have a family member who is still subscribed here, that's
- 58:26like, OK, honestly, can we talk for a second about like.
- 58:28Passwords here. When there is hello, whenever
- 58:33there's like a fucked up thing in media that happens and
- 58:37there's a call for like boycott this streaming service.
- 58:39I'm like easy enough. I don't think easy for a mooch.
- 58:47Easy for a mooch. That's that's what I'm saying.
- 58:50Look, I'm the I'm the hook up for HBO.
- 58:53If anyone needs HBO, honestly, hit me up.
- 58:55I'll give you my password. I don't bundle that now with
- 58:58Hulu. It's this Hulu, HBO, Disney
- 59:03Plus. Someone recently was like, are
- 59:05you paying for Hulu? You should cancel it so you can
- 59:07move to San Francisco. I was like, well, first of all,
- 59:09let me tell you the $20 moving to San Francisco, it's gonna
- 59:12make a very small note. It's.
- 59:13Not gonna make. A real difference.
- 59:15Second of all, I think I cancel it and then I re sign up every
- 59:18time I want to watch something so I I have to check right?
- 59:21But then I was like, I just want to watch Bluey sometimes.
- 59:24Yeah, hello. I'm the, I'm the and I'm the bad
- 59:29guy and. She's the problem and.
- 59:31She's I think I did pay for it recently but I'll cancel it
- 59:33before it renews on the 21st, OK.
- 59:36And if you happen to have, if you're a password sharer and
- 59:41someone you know has access to at the time of this recording,
- 59:44it's on Hulu. So, so, you know, do without
- 59:47what you will. I'm not endorsing Hulu.
- 59:50This this podcast, it's not associated with CBS, but if
- 59:56you're willing to pay. Then I but if any producers who
- 1:00:01watch. And if anyone's listening who
- 1:00:04has money, we are trying to make a film.
- 1:00:07So, Melissa, thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 1:00:11This was an absolute delight. I'm so happy to have you back in
- 1:00:14the studio. And thank you for thank you for
- 1:00:17letting me really work through some shit.
- 1:00:19I. Like it's a joy.
- 1:00:21I love hanging out with you. Thank you for having me.
- 1:00:23It's so fun and I love Crossroads therapy.
- 1:00:27I think it's just been good. I think I've I've seen my eyes
- 1:00:31are open to a lot that I didn't see before.
- 1:00:34Wow. And girlhood and camaraderie is,
- 1:00:37you know, yeah, sometimes you just got to fight a little bit
- 1:00:40and then bury it. Yeah, bury it way deep.
- 1:00:42Alert. Or just a couple inches under
- 1:00:45the surface? Or just the little girls.
- 1:00:47Just a little bit, just on the beach.
- 1:00:49Yeah, just on the beach. The tide's going to come up, and
- 1:00:52it's going to. Wash, Let it wash away, let it
- 1:00:54wash away. If you're listening to this or
- 1:00:57watching it and you like what you're seeing, please write a
- 1:01:01review. It is.
- 1:01:03I am devastated by how long it has been since someone wrote a
- 1:01:08review about this show. Where do you prefer the reviews
- 1:01:11to be written? The reviews on Apple Podcasts
- 1:01:16are very important. That is where I would like the
- 1:01:20reviews to be. OK, that's good to know.
- 1:01:22I mean, it's still like give me 5 stars on Spotify, like
- 1:01:25subscribe to the YouTube channel, all of that helps.
- 1:01:29Give it a thumb like like the video, do all that.
- 1:01:31But like writing a review on Apple Podcasts, that's what I
- 1:01:35need right now. I'll go do that.
- 1:01:37Oh my God. Thank you.
- 1:01:38Yeah. OK, well, she's going to go do
- 1:01:39it. Will you join her?
- 1:01:40Too. I'll actually watch the one
- 1:01:41Harry Met Sally and then I'll do one for that one.
- 1:01:44Oh my God, amazing. So I genuinely want to listen to
- 1:01:46that one. OK, great.
- 1:01:47Yeah. And listener, if you want to
- 1:01:48listen to that too, go back in the catalog.
- 1:01:51We got to get out of here. You got to go.
- 1:01:53Take a probiotics. My stomach is unwell without my
- 1:01:56tribiotics. And listener, if you are some
- 1:02:02sort of like health food brand and you want to tell me about
- 1:02:07probiotics? Gut health babies.
- 1:02:10Send me free things and I will promote it.
- 1:02:14Because you know what age as well.
- 1:02:16Your gut. If you take tribiotics.
- 1:02:21I'm not trying to be, you know, this is not, this is not a, a
- 1:02:25detox tea place. This is a probiotics place.
- 1:02:29And why? Because I am merely a host.
- 1:02:32And I'm not trying to shit myself all the time, Yeah.
- 1:02:35OK, gotta go. Bye.
