Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Jagruiti Dave: US Correspondent on the increased tensions between the US and Iran, Trump's latest threats
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's go to Jaguti. Dave Are US correspondent Djigouti, what's
- 0:03Speaker 1: Trump being tweeting or true socially overnight about Iran.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he has threatened essentially more action in Iran. He said,
- 0:13Speaker 2: a massive armada is heading that way. It's moving quickly
- 0:16Speaker 2: with great power, enthusiasm and purpose. This is a fleet,
- 0:21Speaker 2: it's the USS Abraham Lincoln with warships alongside, that has
- 0:25Speaker 2: been sent to Iran. This is the President confirming on
- 0:28Speaker 2: truth's social and he's saying that this fleet is larger
- 0:30Speaker 2: than that was sent to Venezuela. And he is essentially
- 0:34Speaker 2: calling on Iran to come to the table and negotiate
- 0:37Speaker 2: a nuclear deal, one that is involving no nuclear weapons.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Is what he said in capitals. He's saying, as I
- 0:44Speaker 2: told Iran once before, make a deal. They didn't, and
- 0:47Speaker 2: there was Operation Midnight Hammer. This is a reference to
- 0:49Speaker 2: last June's US strikes on the three nuclear facilities in Iran,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and he said that the next attack will be far worse.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Don't make that happen again, not like this.
- 1:00Speaker 1: As others aren't paying attention this time, right, the Europeans
- 1:04Speaker 1: are very nervous about this. The Israelis are really nervous
- 1:07Speaker 1: about you know, what does Iran do if America does
- 1:09Speaker 1: do something.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean You've got a response to this from
- 1:14Speaker 2: the Iran's mission to the United Nations. They say that
- 1:16Speaker 2: Iran is ready for dialogue based on mutual respects and interests,
- 1:21Speaker 2: but if pushed, it would defend itself and respond like
- 1:25Speaker 2: never before. So you have you know, US and Iran,
- 1:32Speaker 2: their relations have been pretty shaky, as I think as
- 1:34Speaker 2: an understatement, and Donald Trump has talked about intervention following
- 1:40Speaker 2: those massive protests that we've seen in Iran, the biggest
- 1:43Speaker 2: in decades, and he first of all said that he
- 1:46Speaker 2: would intervene if protesters were killed, but then he changed
- 1:50Speaker 2: his mind, saying that it looks like things were calming down.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Then now protests there have stopped, and in this message
- 1:58Speaker 2: through social posts, the president is now threatening. It appears
- 2:01Speaker 2: over nuclear program the US pulled. Remember President Trump pulled
- 2:07Speaker 2: the US out of the Iran nuclear deal and subsequent
- 2:10Speaker 2: talks have stalled. Partners in the region have said, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 2: the UA in Saudi Arabian particular, have said most recently
- 2:18Speaker 2: that any US led operation in Iran would not they
- 2:21Speaker 2: would not be participating in it, they would not be
- 2:24Speaker 2: using their territorial waters or airspace to take part in
- 2:28Speaker 2: those in any further strikes on Iran, So I think
- 2:32Speaker 2: this is something that the US is weighing, whether the
- 2:35Speaker 2: partners in the Middle East are going to be on board,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and also whether people in Iran strikes in Iran, whether
- 2:41Speaker 2: that would help or hinder protesters, and how it would
- 2:46Speaker 2: be received internally in Iran as well. So I think
- 2:49Speaker 2: there's lots of considerations, but that clearly action is not
- 2:51Speaker 2: off the table yet to grow to You.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Appreciate your time this morning, your Gritty Down the are
