- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Conspiracy The Show, the world's most trusted conspiracy
- 0:16Speaker 1: theory podcast, with your hosts Adam Todd Brown and Olivia Hidar.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hey, everybody, welcome to Conspiracy The Show. I'm your host,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Adam Todd Brown joining me as co host this week,
- 0:40Speaker 2: Connor mc spadden's here.
- 0:42Speaker 3: How's it going, Hello, chums?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Are you excited to talk about Ronald Reagan again?
- 0:48Speaker 3: You know, Adam, when you told me that we're going
- 0:49Speaker 3: to be discussing Ronald Reagan in the Age Crisis, I thought,
- 0:52Speaker 3: who better than two straight white men to get to
- 0:55Speaker 3: the bottom of this, because who better than the people
- 0:58Speaker 3: that perpetrated it to get into the minds of the
- 1:01Speaker 3: villains behind this scandal.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we're covering this in the exact same way the
- 1:05Speaker 2: Reagan administration did, only the opinions of straight white dudes,
- 1:09Speaker 2: that's all.
- 1:10Speaker 3: And I'm bringing a perspective that only the man with
- 1:13Speaker 3: the white devil whispering on his shoulder can bring. You. Yeah,
- 1:17Speaker 3: that's no put down to any of the great black
- 1:19Speaker 3: capitalists of history, and disrespect to Herman Kane and the like,
- 1:23Speaker 3: but sometimes oppression, obfuscation, it's a white man's job. Let's
- 1:28Speaker 3: be honest.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yeah, we don't want to put anyone else out. This
- 1:32Speaker 2: is a hard job.
- 1:33Speaker 3: No.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Last time Connor was on, I know, we said we
- 1:35Speaker 2: were going to keep talking about the Iran contra scandal
- 1:38Speaker 2: and we'll probably get back to that.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Oh but the Gipper was just too busy, was he?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Adam, Yeah, I.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Was thinking before we logged on. Nothing sounds more like
- 1:48Speaker 3: obscure gay slanging that I haven't heard of than Gipper
- 1:51Speaker 3: or gippy. If I didn't know that docking was called
- 1:53Speaker 3: docking and you told me it was called gipping, I'd
- 1:55Speaker 3: be like, yeah, for sure.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I want to talk about Reagan and the AIDS crisis
- 2:01Speaker 2: because I went through a personal trauma last week in
- 2:04Speaker 2: that I had to go see the Reagan movie opening
- 2:09Speaker 2: day for a podcast, and I ended up watching it
- 2:14Speaker 2: with a crowdfull of eighty plus year old Republicans who
- 2:20Speaker 2: were hooting and hollering like tweens at a Taylor Swift concert.
- 2:25Speaker 2: It was fucking gross. I hated it.
- 2:29Speaker 3: This sounds like a complete nightmare the hey geographies of anything.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I'm sure if you watched the Hillary Clinton Hulu series
- 2:35Speaker 3: screening at the Pasadena Civic Center or whatever, the fuck
- 2:38Speaker 3: with a bunch of Democrat the blue bloods. It would
- 2:41Speaker 3: be absolutely ghastly as well. You need a anchor in
- 2:46Speaker 3: your irony universe. I would and saw the moving in
- 2:48Speaker 3: those Safe Spaces, which is made by the Titan Mind
- 2:51Speaker 3: duo of Dennis Frager and Adam Corolla, which was essentially
- 2:56Speaker 3: you get off my lawn. You can't say nothing, no
- 2:58Speaker 3: more of the motion picture. And it was a blast
- 3:00Speaker 3: because we got so as fuck and there was three
- 3:02Speaker 3: people there and two of them were me and my
- 3:04Speaker 3: buddy Ramsey. Now without that, it's just a reminder of
- 3:08Speaker 3: how awful the world is, you know, the limited people's
- 3:11Speaker 3: perspectives are, and how alone you are and everything. So, yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 3: it's creepy as fuck. It's like being in a horror movie.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it was alarming. And it turned into kind of
- 3:23Speaker 2: a shouting match where every once in a while they
- 3:27Speaker 2: would cheer for something and then something factually inaccurate would
- 3:32Speaker 2: happen and I would shout at the crowd. At one point,
- 3:37Speaker 2: they were talking about Reagan trading hostages for arms, and
- 3:41Speaker 2: it said, but he didn't do it, and I just
- 3:43Speaker 2: shouted out, yeah he did. And there was also a
- 3:51Speaker 2: moment where Reagan and Gorbachev were signing the Salt Treaty
- 3:55Speaker 2: and they like leaned into shake hands, and I just
- 3:57Speaker 2: went kiss.
- 4:00Speaker 3: It.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Good, good, good times. But that movie have you ever seen?
- 4:05Speaker 2: I know this is the obvious comparison, but I'm gonna
- 4:08Speaker 2: make it anyway. Have you seen the Tupac movie All
- 4:10Speaker 2: Eyes on Me?
- 4:12Speaker 3: The obvious comparison to the new Real Reagan movie is,
- 4:15Speaker 3: of course the Tupaca You No, I haven't. Actually, I'm
- 4:17Speaker 3: ashamed to say it is garbage.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It is essentially a Wikipedia page about Tupac because, oh no,
- 4:26Speaker 2: they try to get every fucking thing that happened in
- 4:29Speaker 2: his life in this ninety minute span.
- 4:32Speaker 3: It's like, we got the six white people who work
- 4:34Speaker 3: in this channel to tell us everything they know about Tupac.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and what ends up happening is they just gloss
- 4:40Speaker 2: over everything, Like I would watch a whole movie about
- 4:44Speaker 2: Tupac getting shot in that recording studio in New York.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I looked into that one a lot, and
- 4:51Speaker 3: it just seems to be just a giant, awful, awful
- 4:54Speaker 3: misunderstanding kind of.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Yeah, this Reagan movie is a lot like that in
- 5:00Speaker 2: and that they gloss over pretty much everything.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Wikipedia page the movie.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It really is. But it's more than that. It's propaganda.
- 5:09Speaker 2: For one thing, this is just state propaganda.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Reagan and Gorbachow totally kissed. Don't believe the lies.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And I've tweeted this. I said it on a podcast
- 5:22Speaker 2: last week. The Reagan movie is Unamerican as fuck because
- 5:26Speaker 2: running throughout the whole movie is these constant suggestions that
- 5:31Speaker 2: protesters are part of what's wrong with this country. Motherfucker,
- 5:35Speaker 2: the government is what's wrong with this country. Protesters protested.
- 5:40Speaker 2: He keeps hitting on protesters, and it was one of
- 5:43Speaker 2: the things the crowd cheered the hardest for.
- 5:47Speaker 3: You know, people have those shirts. It's like the First
- 5:49Speaker 3: Pride was a riot. I'm surprised that the libertarian annoying
- 5:52Speaker 3: T shirt market hasn't gone with This country was a protest,
- 5:56Speaker 3: you know, Boston T Party, DoD gifts, what the fuck?
- 6:00Speaker 3: And sure, I guess I'd try to seek alternate viewpoints
- 6:03Speaker 3: of history so much I can sort of forget that
- 6:06Speaker 3: the main version a lot of times is the villain
- 6:08Speaker 3: is the good guy, Like yeah, oh yeah, I forgot
- 6:11Speaker 3: when you tell the story, that's the bad guys. The
- 6:12Speaker 3: dude at Kent State he said we should all get
- 6:14Speaker 3: along my bad.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah, the Reagan movie is fucking chock full of that.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I did forget one thing though, that I would be
- 6:25Speaker 2: remiss if I did not mention. I'm going to try
- 6:27Speaker 2: and get one of the filmmakers on the podcast. But
- 6:31Speaker 2: and apparently this didn't happen everywhere that the Reagan movie
- 6:34Speaker 2: was shown, but it did happen at my screening. There
- 6:37Speaker 2: was a trailer for a documentary about the theory that
- 6:42Speaker 2: Abraham Lincoln was gay.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yo.
- 6:45Speaker 2: It's called Lover of Men and Man the Republicans. I
- 6:50Speaker 2: hated that shit.
- 6:52Speaker 3: They were this fucking rock so hard.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I told I was so fucking psyched, especially when the
- 6:59Speaker 2: title card popped up a lover of men. Oh I
- 7:03Speaker 2: berely laughed.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Good a room fuless like a sitcom arrested development. Writers
- 7:08Speaker 3: couldn't come up with a reveal that lover of men.
- 7:10Speaker 3: The two thousand and six version of this was when
- 7:13Speaker 3: someone asked George W. Bush if he saw Broke Back Mount,
- 7:15Speaker 3: and everyone was like, Wow, that reporter is punk rock,
- 7:18Speaker 3: you know, like he brought up to gay think to
- 7:20Speaker 3: the fucking president. Oh fuck, I love that. I wrote
- 7:22Speaker 3: a show called Historical Rosa on Netflix, which is kind
- 7:25Speaker 3: of good, and there's an episode of Abraham Lincoln. We
- 7:28Speaker 3: actually had an Abraham Lincoln like professor come in to
- 7:31Speaker 3: consult on the show and make sure it was accurate,
- 7:33Speaker 3: and he was fucking annoying, but he had tolstally interesting
- 7:36Speaker 3: things and we read a lot about I think it's
- 7:37Speaker 3: mostly the stems around the guy named Joshua Snead who
- 7:41Speaker 3: was like business partners with in him saying we shared
- 7:45Speaker 3: a lovely evening together once, and it's like, I don't know,
- 7:48Speaker 3: maybe me and Adam just went on a trip and
- 7:49Speaker 3: we played cards and we watched showtime and went to bed.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It was a lovely evening. I mean, there's nothing gay
- 7:53Speaker 3: about it. Seemed a little blown out of proportion to me,
- 7:56Speaker 3: but the fact that it had bummed out of which
- 7:57Speaker 3: of those people in this role.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm interested to see if that's all there
- 8:03Speaker 2: is too and how they make that into a full documentary.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I guess we'll find out.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it it's entirely possible that there's way
- 8:11Speaker 3: more to it than I realized, But I don't know.
- 8:13Speaker 3: We took the research on that show pretty seriously. We
- 8:15Speaker 3: had a lot of people looking into it and believe me,
- 8:17Speaker 3: with a roomful of comedy writers, we were begging for
- 8:20Speaker 3: him to be gayer than he was. We had a
- 8:22Speaker 3: bit where Guy Brandon came on and played the guy,
- 8:24Speaker 3: but it was cut from the show. I think his
- 8:25Speaker 3: bit was actually kind of alluding to that I was
- 8:27Speaker 3: like a little underblown or whatever. But their one line
- 8:29Speaker 3: was like, well, we packed it up in the morning
- 8:32Speaker 3: and humped it all the way to Kentucky. Nice a
- 8:36Speaker 3: deleted scene for a TV show you haven't seen.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah. I also really hate that this movie co ops
- 8:45Speaker 2: the Genesis song Land of Confusion.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You misinterpret movies and songs from the eighties. Adam's Gonna
- 8:51Speaker 3: find You and your fucking crimes will be addressed.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Well, what bothers me here is this song was specifically
- 8:57Speaker 2: about Reagan being a fucking problem, and it's got a
- 9:00Speaker 2: really famous video where it's puppets of Nancy Reagan and
- 9:07Speaker 2: Ronald Reagan. That's the whole video. It was a super
- 9:10Speaker 2: anti Reagan song, and the way it plays in this
- 9:14Speaker 2: movie makes it seem like it's a song about needing
- 9:18Speaker 2: someone like Ronald Reagan to take over the country. Oh,
- 9:24Speaker 2: because they play it over this montage of his scandals.
- 9:29Speaker 2: They cover Reagan's scandals in the span of a Genesis song.
- 9:33Speaker 2: They're just like, this happened, this happened, this happened, this happened,
- 9:36Speaker 2: and they.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Brush over it and make the Genesis song into the
- 9:40Speaker 3: justification well we needed Reagan to take over.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah, when you listen to that song in that context,
- 9:47Speaker 2: it's like flips it on its head and makes it
- 9:50Speaker 2: seem like that as a song about needing a strong,
- 9:53Speaker 2: powerful leader like Ronald Reagan. That is not what that
- 9:56Speaker 2: fucking song is about. And what really b bothered me
- 10:00Speaker 2: about that scene and the reason we're doing this episode
- 10:04Speaker 2: today is they're doing this montage of all his scandals.
- 10:08Speaker 2: The whole energy is, oh, people were mad at Ronald Reagan, why.
- 10:13Speaker 3: He was getting too much stuff done, and some pussies got.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Kinda yeah, that was kind of the tone. And one
- 10:22Speaker 2: of the things that happens during that montage is they
- 10:25Speaker 2: put up the statistic about how many people died of
- 10:28Speaker 2: AIDS under Ronald Reagan, and I shit you not, it
- 10:32Speaker 2: seems like they're bragging more than criticizing.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Oh God, yeah, sure.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I feel like they were saying, look at the fucking
- 10:39Speaker 2: numbers this guy put up weren't those the days when
- 10:42Speaker 2: we could just not care about gay people and let
- 10:44Speaker 2: them die, or.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Could let them slowly matriculate from society through disease.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I honestly think that was the point, because it's
- 10:52Speaker 2: the only moment where they call out a specific negative
- 10:56Speaker 2: thing about.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Rad get more taxes and killed more gay and anybody
- 11:01Speaker 3: that they ever did it.
- 11:02Speaker 2: And I do believe it said specifically that this many
- 11:06Speaker 2: gay people died, and not everyone who had AIDS was gay.
- 11:10Speaker 2: But you got to inflate those numbers. If you want
- 11:12Speaker 2: to get the conservatives in the crowd excited, you should go.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Up to a bunch of neo Nazis and you tell
- 11:17Speaker 3: him that you just killed two pole Acts and a Gypsy.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I'm sure they'll be happy for you, but it's not
- 11:23Speaker 3: as good as three Jews exactly.
- 11:25Speaker 2: So I want to talk about Reagan and the AIDS crisis.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I know I've mentioned it before, but we've never done
- 11:33Speaker 2: a whole episode on it. There's a really good short
- 11:36Speaker 2: documentary out there called When AIDS Was Funny. It's made
- 11:41Speaker 2: by a guy named Scott Kalonico, who I know. I've
- 11:44Speaker 2: worked with him before. He is weirdly the guy who
- 11:47Speaker 2: coined the phrase manic pixie dream girl.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Wow. Yes, just a nice feather in your cap. The
- 11:54Speaker 3: only phrase we ever coined was Elvis Truther.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Exactly, and that phrase still applies to me.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Oh yeah, oh yeah, I see you here.
- 12:03Speaker 2: But yeah. It's a good documentary if you can find it.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It's a short documentary, so I don't think it's on
- 12:08Speaker 2: the streaming services, but I'm sure it's on YouTube. And
- 12:11Speaker 2: it covers at least the first part of the aid scandal,
- 12:16Speaker 2: which is when AIDS was first becoming a thing, and
- 12:20Speaker 2: one reporter in particular kept asking the White House about AIDS,
- 12:25Speaker 2: and they were just like, why are you asking? Are
- 12:28Speaker 2: you gay?
- 12:29Speaker 3: That's your first response to, like, I don't know. One
- 12:32Speaker 3: of the biggest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century, a
- 12:36Speaker 3: century not devoid of major humanitarian crises. I would say,
- 12:40Speaker 3: it's sad.
- 12:41Speaker 2: It's fucking sad to watch.
- 12:43Speaker 3: I'm trying to find the exact quote. It reminds me
- 12:46Speaker 3: very much of Are you familiar with Nardwar?
- 12:49Speaker 2: No?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Well, never mind, what is Nardwar? If you like punk
- 12:54Speaker 3: rock music or hip hop, go watch any Nardwar interview
- 12:57Speaker 3: with Snoop Dogg or Jelly Opra and enjoy the next
- 13:00Speaker 3: twelve hours of YouTube clips because it's gonna be the
- 13:02Speaker 3: greatest thing you've ever seen in your life. But he's
- 13:04Speaker 3: talking to the Prime Minister of Canada and he's like,
- 13:05Speaker 3: these protesters were maced, they were pepper spray. What do
- 13:08Speaker 3: you have to say about this fleet brutality? And the
- 13:09Speaker 3: Prime Minister's like me, I'd like to put Petter on
- 13:12Speaker 3: my stake. He literally brushes it off in the most
- 13:19Speaker 3: unbuddy evil way possible. This is what people in power do,
- 13:23Speaker 3: you know. They're like, what, you're fucking gay for even
- 13:26Speaker 3: caring about that.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah. There's two exchanges that happen during White House Press
- 13:31Speaker 2: conferences between White House Press Secretary Larry Speaks, which what
- 13:36Speaker 2: a great fucking name for a press secretary.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Oh my god. That his ideal Remember those shoes. Healey's
- 13:43Speaker 3: that you had a little wheel in the heel of
- 13:45Speaker 3: the shoe that you could take out so you can
- 13:47Speaker 3: get a little running start and you can go for
- 13:48Speaker 3: a little cruise on your little Healey wheelies. That was
- 13:50Speaker 3: inmitted by guy named like Richard Healy. That was just
- 13:54Speaker 3: his fucking name, no creativity. It's like a great name,
- 13:57Speaker 3: like it's even if you spend two thousand dollars paying
- 14:00Speaker 3: a bunch of riders come up with good nameswer and
- 14:02Speaker 3: shoes with wheels and the heels, he'd probably come to Heally's.
- 14:04Speaker 3: But that just was the fuker's name. That's great, Smart
- 14:07Speaker 3: and Final. The store was started by a stud by
- 14:09Speaker 3: mister smart and a mister Final. Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I found that out at a comedy show not too
- 14:14Speaker 2: long ago. I think it was Andy Peters has a
- 14:16Speaker 2: bit about that. I had no fucking idea.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Motherfucker's taking my fun facts.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Plagure isn't so these exchanges between Larry Speaks, who is
- 14:27Speaker 2: White House Press Secretary, and a reporter named Lester Consolving.
- 14:32Speaker 2: What's interesting about Lester is he was personally opposed to
- 14:38Speaker 2: homosexuality as a moral thing. But I feel like we
- 14:43Speaker 2: really were living in a different time at this point
- 14:48Speaker 2: where you could be a person who on moral grounds
- 14:51Speaker 2: as opposed to homosexuality while at the same time holding
- 14:55Speaker 2: the belief that it doesn't mean they should die. They
- 14:58Speaker 2: are still people who deserve to be protected. And that
- 15:02Speaker 2: was Lester Kinsolving's whole thing. He was like, I'm not gay,
- 15:06Speaker 2: I don't fucking approve of it. But you can't just
- 15:09Speaker 2: let people die the way you're letting people die. And
- 15:13Speaker 2: what's so alarming about these exchanges is they're exactly the same.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Lester Consolving asks a question and then Larry speaks basically
- 15:24Speaker 2: implies that he's gay, and everyone starts laughing. This happened
- 15:27Speaker 2: twice two years apart. Happened once in nineteen eighty two,
- 15:32Speaker 2: and then two full years of the White House doing
- 15:36Speaker 2: nothing about AIDS, and then they have the same exchange
- 15:38Speaker 2: in nineteen eighty four. And I'll play them right now.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Here's the nineteen eighty two recording, Lauri, because.
- 15:46Speaker 4: The President have any reactions with the announce from the
- 15:50Speaker 4: Center for Disease Control of Atlanta that AIDS is.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Now an epidemic in over six hundred cases. Heard him,
- 16:01Speaker 3: it's known as gay plague.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I mean, it's a pretty serious thing that one and
- 16:08Speaker 4: every three people that get this have died.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And I wondered if the president of the world I
- 16:12Speaker 3: don't have it?
- 16:13Speaker 5: Are you?
- 16:14Speaker 1: Do you?
- 16:15Speaker 3: You don't have it? Well, I'm relieved you're that, do you?
- 16:19Speaker 3: You didn't answer my question? How do you know the
- 16:22Speaker 3: President the White House looks on this as a great job.
- 16:26Speaker 5: No, I don't know anything about it, Leinsters.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Does anybody in the White House know about this epidemic?
- 16:31Speaker 3: La?
- 16:32Speaker 5: I don't think so. I don't think it's been any
- 16:34Speaker 5: There's been no personal experience here, Lester.
- 16:36Speaker 3: No, I mean about you.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Doctor checked thoroughly with doctor Rugy this morning. He's had no,
- 16:44Speaker 5: no patience suffered from a I, d S or whatever
- 16:47Speaker 5: it is, doesn't have I didn't say that, didn't I
- 16:52Speaker 5: thought I heard you in the State Department over there
- 16:54Speaker 5: when you're still over there, because I love you, Oh,
- 16:59Speaker 5: I say, don't put it in those terms.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Last year, I hope, so pretty fucking scandalous. Here's the
- 17:09Speaker 2: nineteen eighty four recording.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Leicester's beginning to circle. Now he's moving in front.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 17:14Speaker 4: It's the Center for the Disease Control and let of
- 17:20Speaker 4: an estimated and I asked the question. Mar estimated three
- 17:24Speaker 4: hundred thousand people have been exposed to AIDS, which can
- 17:27Speaker 4: be transmitted through saliva. Will the President, as commander in chief,
- 17:31Speaker 4: take steps to protect armed forces with medical services from
- 17:38Speaker 4: AIDS patients or those who run the risk of spreading
- 17:41Speaker 4: AIDS in the same amount of that they bid typhoid
- 17:43Speaker 4: fever people from being involved with the health or food services?
- 17:51Speaker 4: Is the president concerned about this subject?
- 17:54Speaker 3: Larry, that has to express concern.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Reaction here, I you know I have it is only.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Is he gonna do anything?
- 18:05Speaker 5: Last guy, I've not heard him express anything.
- 18:08Speaker 4: No express, no opinion about this epidemic.
- 18:11Speaker 3: No, but I must convince I haven't asked him about it.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Would have you been checked?
- 18:18Speaker 2: Fuck, Larry speaks. That guy is a piece of shit.
- 18:22Speaker 3: You know. On the one hand, this is like a
- 18:24Speaker 3: pretty cut and dry two pieces of evidence of a
- 18:27Speaker 3: man who's essentially a mouthpiece for an evil empire. On
- 18:31Speaker 3: the other hand, as a comedian who one time at
- 18:33Speaker 3: his weekly comedy show in the year twenty fifteen did
- 18:35Speaker 3: the exact same crowd work on the exact same guy
- 18:38Speaker 3: two weeks in a row, I can sympathize with the
- 18:42Speaker 3: lack of creativity, going back to an old, familiar Well,
- 18:45Speaker 3: it's something we all do from time to time. I'm
- 18:47Speaker 3: sure Adam can relate. So Larry speaks, I say something
- 18:51Speaker 3: Chris Rock will tell you. Don't stop writing. Okay, if
- 18:54Speaker 3: you want to trust the gaze, come up with some
- 18:56Speaker 3: fresh material. We should all do better.
- 18:59Speaker 2: One thing about Reagan before he became president There was
- 19:04Speaker 2: an incident when he was governor of California where he
- 19:07Speaker 2: fired two staff members, including his chief of staff, after
- 19:11Speaker 2: they were outed as gay in an article by an
- 19:14Speaker 2: investigative journalist.
- 19:15Speaker 3: What a horrible judge. And this investigative journalist is just
- 19:18Speaker 3: going around following somebody. Hey he's having fun. Yeah, he's
- 19:22Speaker 3: experiencing the pleasure of nerve endings in his anus that
- 19:25Speaker 3: you'll never even know.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Yeah, this was definitely a different time in that way.
- 19:31Speaker 3: You could have a whole job just catching people being gay.
- 19:33Speaker 3: I guess from the sound of this article, I could
- 19:36Speaker 3: have been Connor mcspadden, homo catcher, threw some glitter on
- 19:39Speaker 3: the old mug and went down to the leather bar
- 19:42Speaker 3: and fucking just outed family men all all fucking night long.
- 19:46Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Yeah, And Reagan considered homosexuality part of that moral decline,
- 19:54Speaker 2: and that carried on into his first run for president
- 19:57Speaker 2: and everything he did after that.
- 20:00Speaker 3: It's a moral evolution of the human sexual condition. Homosexuality
- 20:04Speaker 3: it's very green. It doesn't produce the same environmental waste
- 20:08Speaker 3: that heterosexual sex does, which is babies. If everybody turned gay,
- 20:12Speaker 3: we'd probably have plenty of corn. Yeah, I got an
- 20:15Speaker 3: A in the two honors community college economics classes I
- 20:18Speaker 3: got So what do I know? But that's just my theory.
- 20:22Speaker 2: So these exchanges we already talked about. They happened. The
- 20:25Speaker 2: first one happens in nineteen eighty two, and by that point,
- 20:29Speaker 2: I think only like six hundred people had died from
- 20:33Speaker 2: AIDS in the United States. But those numbers start going
- 20:37Speaker 2: way way up.
- 20:38Speaker 3: If you're that guy's like, nephew, do you brag about that? Like,
- 20:42Speaker 3: my nephew is actually like one of the first six
- 20:44Speaker 3: hundred people to dive ades. Yeah, I wondered that, Like
- 20:47Speaker 3: my dad saw Hendrix. You know, my dad was fucking lame.
- 20:52Speaker 3: My dad saw the recording of Kiss Alive two two gross, Yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 3: I know two.
- 20:59Speaker 2: So it was isn't just that the Reagan administration was
- 21:03Speaker 2: dismissive of AIDS. Their policies actually went a long way
- 21:08Speaker 2: toward hindering efforts of medical professionals to deal with it.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah. If you're like, I want to research age, they're
- 21:15Speaker 3: like why.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a lot of that. We played those
- 21:18Speaker 2: two exchanges. The whole fucking tenor of it is, why
- 21:23Speaker 2: would we know about gay people? Who cares that gay
- 21:26Speaker 2: people are dying. That was the Reagan administration stance on
- 21:30Speaker 2: AIDS pretty much forever.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it seems like the administration had a playbook of
- 21:36Speaker 3: this is our talking points for this issue and this
- 21:38Speaker 3: issue and this issue, and they were constantly evolving based
- 21:40Speaker 3: on the agenda and the political topography of the day.
- 21:43Speaker 3: It seems like the age thing, it didn't even seem
- 21:45Speaker 3: like it was in the book. And they're like, I
- 21:46Speaker 3: don't know what the fuck that gay shit. There seemed
- 21:49Speaker 3: to be no thought whatsoever put into it. You know.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's absolutely that. I feel like this is actually
- 21:55Speaker 2: the biggest scandal of Reagan's presidency.
- 21:59Speaker 3: It's very not preventable, but addressable. Yeah, let's put some
- 22:03Speaker 3: money into stopping this public health crisis.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yeah. And the whole reason none of that was done
- 22:09Speaker 2: is just religious bigotry, basically. Case in point. In nineteen
- 22:14Speaker 2: eighty three, Reagan met with members of the LGBTQ community
- 22:19Speaker 2: to talk about AIDS and what could be done to
- 22:22Speaker 2: prevent it, and he came away from that meeting very unhappy.
- 22:27Speaker 2: So he had a second meeting, this time with his
- 22:30Speaker 2: conservative advisors.
- 22:32Speaker 3: A lot of behind closed door meetings with dudes for
- 22:35Speaker 3: a guy who hates the gays, right, let me just
- 22:39Speaker 3: get off. Me and my secret buddies together to confer
- 22:42Speaker 3: about this, my special paths.
- 22:47Speaker 2: In the ragstrange, their plan to fight AIDS was to
- 22:51Speaker 2: sell homosexuality as a sin and a moral failing. And
- 22:56Speaker 2: they thought if they told enough people that, then it
- 22:59Speaker 2: would just keep killing gay people and they'd be fine.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I don't know, and you know what, props to them,
- 23:06Speaker 2: it works, yeah, exactly.
- 23:09Speaker 3: You know what, when the deep state wins, and they
- 23:12Speaker 3: often do, they really win. They owned the pr battle
- 23:14Speaker 3: on gayness. It wasn't even slightly cool to be pro
- 23:19Speaker 3: your hypothetical gay friends until like two thousand and three years,
- 23:22Speaker 3: saying to one, did the John Stewart Daily Show come
- 23:24Speaker 3: out or something like that?
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was something like that.
- 23:27Speaker 3: And even then John there's videos of Johnson. I'm sure
- 23:29Speaker 3: he's apologized for him being like there was a bitch
- 23:32Speaker 3: and there's a man in addressed Tevin shit, you know yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 3: And even that was pretty woke.
- 23:37Speaker 5: For the.
- 23:39Speaker 2: So after those nineteen eighty three meetings, there were no
- 23:44Speaker 2: other meetings about AIDS for another two years, which sidebar.
- 23:50Speaker 2: By nineteen eighty four, more than thirty five hundred people
- 23:54Speaker 2: had died from AIDS in the United States by nineteen
- 23:56Speaker 2: eighty five. That number jumped twelve thousand in five hundred
- 24:01Speaker 2: and twenty nine.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Unfortunately, this is why we called the decade the nineteen eighties.
- 24:08Speaker 2: So Team Reagan was also very hesitant to approve funding
- 24:13Speaker 2: for AIDS research. The first time someone managed to get
- 24:17Speaker 2: that passed, it was because they buried this funding for
- 24:22Speaker 2: AIDS in a public Health Emergency Trust Fund proposal that
- 24:28Speaker 2: was specifically for stuff like Legionnaire's disease and toxic shock syndrome,
- 24:33Speaker 2: and someone just slid AIDS research in there, and of
- 24:36Speaker 2: course no one read it. So that's how AIDS research
- 24:40Speaker 2: got funded. Initially, it was through sneaky tactics.
- 24:46Speaker 3: They had to fund AIDS research the same way they
- 24:48Speaker 3: passed the Patriot Acts. Yeah, don't you love this system
- 24:52Speaker 3: of government of ours?
- 24:53Speaker 2: Oh, it's the best. Our government is the best.
- 24:57Speaker 3: It's like if you got this shit from drinking too
- 24:59Speaker 3: much MoU do. They would have called it the freedom
- 25:01Speaker 3: virus and like launched in the nineteen eighty version of
- 25:05Speaker 3: Operation Light Speed to its fucking curate.
- 25:08Speaker 2: So of course it took a rich white dude dying
- 25:11Speaker 2: from AIDS to light a fire. Yeah, under the Reagan administration,
- 25:17Speaker 2: that rich white dude being legendary actor Rock Hudson, who
- 25:22Speaker 2: I'm old enough to remember when that happened, and I'm
- 25:27Speaker 2: not old enough to give a shit about Rock Hudson,
- 25:31Speaker 2: but I knew so many people, like especially family members,
- 25:34Speaker 2: who were just so broken up about Rock Hudson dying.
- 25:39Speaker 2: So it was a big deal to people. And he
- 25:44Speaker 2: apparently tried really hard to not let people know he
- 25:49Speaker 2: had AIDS, and meanwhile he was just disintegrating in public,
- 25:54Speaker 2: so people knew something was wrong.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Yeah, how do you play that? He's just like, I'm
- 25:59Speaker 3: getting really into hair.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, just working it out a bunch in my nineties,
- 26:03Speaker 2: you know. In the book And the Band Played On,
- 26:05Speaker 2: which if people have never seen it, there's a movie
- 26:08Speaker 2: version of And the Band Played On. It was an
- 26:10Speaker 2: HBO movie and it's really fucking good. I cannot recommend
- 26:16Speaker 2: it enough. And it's about how people were getting AIDS
- 26:20Speaker 2: from blood transfusions. There was blood that was tainted with
- 26:25Speaker 2: HIV and no one fucking knew it because they weren't
- 26:27Speaker 2: testing for it. So a lot of the people who
- 26:30Speaker 2: died from AIDS were not homosexuals. They were not drug users.
- 26:34Speaker 2: They were people who went in for a fucking surgery
- 26:37Speaker 2: and got tainted blood transfusions, which I don't know. It
- 26:41Speaker 2: doesn't make Reagan's thing worse, Reagan not treating gay people
- 26:45Speaker 2: as people. There's not a lot that can make that worse.
- 26:48Speaker 2: But it just doubly sucks that that's the reason he
- 26:53Speaker 2: ignored it when it wasn't even a valid reason. This
- 26:57Speaker 2: was not just a gay disease, but because it had
- 27:02Speaker 2: that connotation to it, the Reagan administration just fucking ignored it.
- 27:06Speaker 2: And Reagan's in hell now.
- 27:08Speaker 3: They weren't even being evil accurately exactly. Yeah, there was
- 27:12Speaker 3: friendly fire.
- 27:13Speaker 2: The book and the band played on. They point to
- 27:16Speaker 2: rock Hudson dying as kind of a before and after
- 27:19Speaker 2: moment for AIDS where people like Reagan and his squad
- 27:24Speaker 2: wanted to ignore it. And then Rock Hudson dies and
- 27:27Speaker 2: he was a friend of the Reagan's, more a friend
- 27:30Speaker 2: of Nancy Reagan than Ronald Reagan, but they were friends.
- 27:38Speaker 2: And there's a really sad story where Rock Hudson goes
- 27:44Speaker 2: to France to try and get treatment for AIDS and
- 27:49Speaker 2: the hospital he wants to go to is a military
- 27:52Speaker 2: hospital and they won't take him because they don't want
- 27:56Speaker 2: to be associated with the gay disease. And so Rock
- 28:00Speaker 2: Hudson reached out to Nancy Reagan and was like, hey,
- 28:03Speaker 2: will you help and maybe get me into this hospital
- 28:07Speaker 2: and she was like, now, we can't do that. It
- 28:09Speaker 2: would look like we're favoring our friends. Meanwhile, there are
- 28:13Speaker 2: so many instances of the Reagans favoring their friends over
- 28:17Speaker 2: any other kind of shit. But this Nancy was like, nope, nope,
- 28:22Speaker 2: you just die gay.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I guess tells you a lot about how homophobic the
- 28:27Speaker 3: global climate was when you get turned away for treatment.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Even in France, the gay is country of all time
- 28:35Speaker 3: by far.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is crazy how and I mean when
- 28:42Speaker 2: it comes to gay people, that fucking stance carried on deep.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I mean, i'd say into the two thousands kind of
- 28:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I mean I remember going to high school and like
- 28:53Speaker 3: you know, I'm from Chino, California, went to high school Ontario, California,
- 28:56Speaker 3: kind of a conservative ish area, and just walking around
- 28:59Speaker 3: and seeing the all the fucking yes on eight yard signs,
- 29:02Speaker 3: and it'd been crazy that every time you saw it
- 29:04Speaker 3: in these yellow signs, you're like that guy fucking that
- 29:06Speaker 3: guy hates my friends. Yeah, and we went around on
- 29:09Speaker 3: Halloween ripping them all up, which was very fun.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Oh that does sound fun.
- 29:12Speaker 3: But yeah, kids to school had the ship hanging af
- 29:14Speaker 3: their backpack. They were all fucking like the macho and
- 29:17Speaker 3: out there and fuck you and saying all the slurs
- 29:19Speaker 3: and shit like that. And yeah, it was not she
- 29:22Speaker 3: It was not friendly. She was not cool. If you like,
- 29:24Speaker 3: you know, I was in the drama department. There's fucking
- 29:26Speaker 3: tons of my friends were gay, but they couldn't. It
- 29:29Speaker 3: wasn't like on their Facebook, you know, like, yeah, here
- 29:32Speaker 3: I am at problem of the girl because I love pussy.
- 29:36Speaker 2: So a few short weeks after Rock Hudson died, Congress
- 29:41Speaker 2: magically doubled the amount of federal funding allocated for AIDS research.
- 29:48Speaker 3: God damn it, there's some kind of transgender disease. But
- 29:51Speaker 3: and then Hulk Hogan caught it.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's kind of what this was. And I guarantee
- 29:57Speaker 2: there had to be a point where Reagan was like, well,
- 30:01Speaker 2: how did he catch it? He's not gay?
- 30:04Speaker 3: Yeah he is.
- 30:05Speaker 2: He was super duper gay, Ronald Reagan, You just don't
- 30:08Speaker 2: know it. He was Rock Hudson. Yeah, he was gay.
- 30:11Speaker 2: He was closeted, fiercely closeted. I wonder why people seemed
- 30:16Speaker 2: so accepting of shit like that in the eighties. I
- 30:19Speaker 2: don't know why he felt he had to hide that.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I was making a fan fiction in my head where
- 30:23Speaker 3: Nancy gave him some sloppy topy Miraculously she had like
- 30:28Speaker 3: a cut in her gums and became the first person
- 30:30Speaker 3: to ever contract HIV orally like that, and then gives
- 30:33Speaker 3: it to Reagan like the last time they ever had.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Ronald Reagan secretly dies of AIDS, but they pretend it's Alzheimer's.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, that's the Reagan movie I want.
- 30:41Speaker 3: That's yeah, that's that's my version of Inglorious Bastards. It's
- 30:45Speaker 3: about the Reagan administration, but the alternate ending see through
- 30:48Speaker 3: happenstance gets AIDS.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Yeah, which that would take so much longer to kill
- 30:53Speaker 2: him than that dementia did. But that's fine, any whatever
- 30:57Speaker 2: road we need to take to get there.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I'm actually all right with slow death to the Gipper.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that would have been better. I mean, I
- 31:04Speaker 2: think he died kind of slow. I remember, I don't
- 31:06Speaker 2: remember exactly when did Ronald Reagan die.
- 31:09Speaker 3: I think he died on like two thousand and five. No,
- 31:12Speaker 3: that's wrong, early ninety six.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Oh you were close June fifth, two thousand and four.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Oh okay, Yeah, he was killed in the invasion of Iraq. Crazy,
- 31:25Speaker 2: real fucking American hero.
- 31:27Speaker 3: It's nuts, just drilling on a submachine gun in a helicopter.
- 31:32Speaker 2: So when rock Hudson died. This was also the point
- 31:36Speaker 2: in history where Reagan finally started talking about AIDS with
- 31:40Speaker 2: his AIDS you.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Know you rye dog.
- 31:46Speaker 2: On September seventeenth, nineteen eighty five, he finally, for the
- 31:51Speaker 2: first time, acknowledged AIDS as a real thing when he
- 31:55Speaker 2: was asked about it by a reporter at a White
- 31:58Speaker 2: House press conference. But even then, all he did was
- 32:02Speaker 2: defend his administration's actions when it came to AIDS and
- 32:07Speaker 2: claimed that it was actually the White House's top priority.
- 32:11Speaker 2: It's like, get the fuck out of here, what are
- 32:13Speaker 2: you talking about?
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah? Maybe fucking avoiding it because you're all secretly gay. Anyways.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he did publicly claim in nineteen eighty six that
- 32:23Speaker 2: finding a cure for AIDS was quote one of our
- 32:25Speaker 2: highest public health priorities end quote. I love this turn
- 32:29Speaker 2: of events. After he made that announcement, he pulls then
- 32:33Speaker 2: Surgeon General see Everett Coop aside, who if you've ever
- 32:36Speaker 2: seen that guy, he's a fucking character. But what they
- 32:40Speaker 2: were leaning on was the fact that See Everett Coop
- 32:44Speaker 2: was a conservative Christian, So they were like, what's going
- 32:46Speaker 2: to happen here is he's going to write a report
- 32:50Speaker 2: about AIDS and he's going to say it's a moral
- 32:53Speaker 2: failing and it's a sin, and that abstinence is the
- 32:56Speaker 2: only way to fix it. And he did not do that. Instead,
- 33:01Speaker 2: he put out this report that was like condom's dummy,
- 33:04Speaker 2: just fucking practice safe sex, and the Reagan administration was
- 33:10Speaker 2: wildly unhappy about that. This is a quote from Ronald
- 33:16Speaker 2: Reagan about see Evert Coop's report. I would think that
- 33:19Speaker 2: sex education should begin with the moral ramifications that it
- 33:24Speaker 2: is not just a physical activity that doesn't have any
- 33:27Speaker 2: more connotation end quote. And I feel like this is
- 33:33Speaker 2: probably the point in history where I don't know if
- 33:36Speaker 2: this is still the case. But for the longest time,
- 33:39Speaker 2: through Bush, the second Obama, everyone there was this thing
- 33:45Speaker 2: where when we send aid money to Africa for anything,
- 33:51Speaker 2: we had a stipulation in place whenever a Republican was
- 33:55Speaker 2: in office that if you do any sex education teachings
- 33:59Speaker 2: it has to be abstinence based, no condoms, none of that,
- 34:03Speaker 2: or you don't get any aid money from the United States.
- 34:06Speaker 2: And then when Democrats have been in office, that stipulation
- 34:09Speaker 2: is not in place. And I feel like that probably
- 34:12Speaker 2: started here where Republicans on one side are like, Nope,
- 34:17Speaker 2: tell people gay people are the devil and that everyone
- 34:20Speaker 2: should never have sex again, and Democrats were like, people
- 34:24Speaker 2: are gonna still have sex, we should probably tell them
- 34:27Speaker 2: how to do it safely. And it seems like that
- 34:31Speaker 2: is still a huge dividing point between Republicans and Democrats.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Just nuts, So much shit in people's brains and in
- 34:40Speaker 3: our world and in our lives just boils down to
- 34:42Speaker 3: the dumb nonsense that your parents told you, that their
- 34:45Speaker 3: parents told them, and to whatever degree you questioned it.
- 34:49Speaker 3: When I was growing up in a relatively modern time
- 34:51Speaker 3: where I could go watch the John Stewart Daily Show
- 34:54Speaker 3: and read Adbusters magazine and get some kind of a
- 34:57Speaker 3: subversive idea of what actually maybe was happening in the world,
- 35:01Speaker 3: there was like still my buddies moms were like, well,
- 35:04Speaker 3: if you get cold, then you get a cold or whatever,
- 35:08Speaker 3: like whatever stupid fucking thing. So somebody tells you when
- 35:13Speaker 3: you're eight years old, very sternly, that you fucking abstinence
- 35:17Speaker 3: is the only way you kind of think about it,
- 35:19Speaker 3: and it makes sense because you've never fucking thought about
- 35:21Speaker 3: anything before because you're eight years and then you just
- 35:23Speaker 3: think that forever and then impregnate your children with your
- 35:28Speaker 3: diseased ideas. You try to always fact you're in a
- 35:30Speaker 3: bit of one into anybody's the general bigotry that people
- 35:35Speaker 3: perhaps don't have the same advantages of having maybe a
- 35:37Speaker 3: diverse group of friends that you have or whatever the
- 35:39Speaker 3: fuck it is. Yeah, but yes, so many things. It's
- 35:42Speaker 3: like then you actually get a gay friend and you're like, oh,
- 35:45Speaker 3: this is actually not that serious, right, Like I guess
- 35:49Speaker 3: I thought from TV it was gonna be a whole production.
- 35:51Speaker 3: But you just like different Smiths songs than I do.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So see Everett Coop eventually wins this battle,
- 35:59Speaker 2: and for the Recordagan had no more meetings with See
- 36:02Speaker 2: Effort Coup about AIDS after he put out that report.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Reagan was just pissed that it didn't say abstinence only.
- 36:09Speaker 2: But in nineteen eighty eight, Congress mandated that a pamphlet
- 36:14Speaker 2: about preventing AIDS be written up and sent to every
- 36:18Speaker 2: household in the United States and see effortt Coop wrote
- 36:22Speaker 2: that pamphlet, and it was all about safe sex and
- 36:26Speaker 2: not about abstinence. So at least he won that battle
- 36:30Speaker 2: within the Reagan administration. I like that part. This was
- 36:34Speaker 2: apparently the largest mass mailing in American history at the time.
- 36:37Speaker 3: I was seeing that as strained because, like, the president
- 36:40Speaker 3: has to talk to you about something. I've ridden you
- 36:42Speaker 3: a special pamphlet. I want you to put this piece
- 36:46Speaker 3: of rubber on your penis before you do naughty things
- 36:49Speaker 3: with each other. It's just kind of creepy, like the
- 36:52Speaker 3: government is in your mail to talk to you about
- 36:55Speaker 3: your day.
- 36:57Speaker 2: I wonder what eventually surpassed that largest mass mailing. I
- 37:02Speaker 2: wonder if it was like those AOL discs, those fucking
- 37:04Speaker 2: things we're everywhere.
- 37:07Speaker 3: There was more of those around than there was oxygen
- 37:11Speaker 3: in the atmosphere for a while. It was really strange.
- 37:13Speaker 3: I was looking at them one time, going like, okay,
- 37:15Speaker 3: these are like they're all like ninety five hours each.
- 37:18Speaker 3: We have three thousand of them. I could be on
- 37:20Speaker 3: the internet for the next ten hundred years.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I did an episode of a podcast we used
- 37:27Speaker 2: to do called the ninety Sucked, and the episode was
- 37:31Speaker 2: about those AOL discs. There was a point, I think
- 37:35Speaker 2: it was like nineteen ninety seven where all CD manufacturing
- 37:41Speaker 2: globally was just doing aolcds. All musicians had to delay
- 37:47Speaker 2: their shit because there were not enough CD plants to
- 37:52Speaker 2: make music. They were just doing AOL discs. That's nuts.
- 37:56Speaker 2: And now there's a huge collector's market forum, which I
- 37:59Speaker 2: found that in interesting.
- 38:00Speaker 3: It would be kind of bossed to have a whole
- 38:02Speaker 3: set like I got every color Way, dude, even the
- 38:05Speaker 3: limited edition Halloween ones. Bro, I got the whole fucking shit.
- 38:08Speaker 2: So in mid nineteen eighty seven, Reagan issued an executive
- 38:13Speaker 2: order that created the Buckle Up, Everybody. This is a
- 38:16Speaker 2: long one Presidential Commission on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Epidemic
- 38:22Speaker 2: to investigate HIV slash AIDS. All Right, For one thing,
- 38:26Speaker 2: HIV and human immuno deficiency virus are the same thing,
- 38:30Speaker 2: so you didn't need to put HIV in there after
- 38:33Speaker 2: writing it out. But this sounds like it would have
- 38:37Speaker 2: been a step in the right direction. But it was
- 38:39Speaker 2: the same partisan bickering about how to approach it, and
- 38:45Speaker 2: Reagan insisted on having all these conservative advisors weigh in
- 38:50Speaker 2: on this. Nancy Reagan wanted a gay person on the
- 38:54Speaker 2: panel because it was affecting gay people at a much
- 38:57Speaker 2: higher rate than anyone else. Reagan that down. He did
- 39:01Speaker 2: briefly consider having someone on the panel who was a
- 39:04Speaker 2: reformed gay person, and it's like, that's just a concerno
- 39:09Speaker 2: loo loo. And so among the things his conservative advisors
- 39:15Speaker 2: wanted to recommend as part of this panel rolling quarantines
- 39:20Speaker 2: of gay people, which I don't think I even fucking
- 39:23Speaker 2: want to know what that means, because that sounds.
- 39:26Speaker 3: A little incredibly menacing, rolling quarantines.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Okay, that sounds a lot like we're building camps and.
- 39:33Speaker 3: The police state has arrived.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:36Speaker 3: They also the jelly offer poem. Sorry to do my
- 39:40Speaker 3: second reference to the show, but I usually do at
- 39:43Speaker 3: least one.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Yeah, we tried to get one or two in every episode. Yeah,
- 39:47Speaker 2: someone else on the panel wanted everyone who is diagnosed
- 39:52Speaker 2: with AIDS to be tattooed, and if you if you
- 39:56Speaker 2: got it from being a drug user, they wanted the
- 39:59Speaker 2: tattoo on your arm, and if you got it through sex.
- 40:03Speaker 2: It was going to go on your buttocks. Those were
- 40:06Speaker 2: the kind of plans the Reagan administration had to fight AIDS.
- 40:10Speaker 3: That is, Wow, that's my new cartoonishly evil favored Reagan
- 40:14Speaker 3: administration fun facts. The Reagan administration had a system of
- 40:18Speaker 3: tattooing people that was ad or eviler than the Holocaust.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Like the people were like number on the arm that
- 40:25Speaker 3: let's be okay, We're going to do more of a
- 40:27Speaker 3: permanent pink triangle thing.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it is crazy. How similar to Nazi shit that is?
- 40:33Speaker 2: They're just like, all right, well, first we're going to
- 40:35Speaker 2: put them all in camps to separate them from society,
- 40:38Speaker 2: and then we're going to put identifying symbols on them.
- 40:40Speaker 2: What could go wrong? What could go wrong?
- 40:43Speaker 3: Yes, so we know where they are, we could keep
- 40:45Speaker 3: tracking them so easily.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Yeah. None of that happened though. Fortunately the effort did
- 40:53Speaker 2: result in something called the Watkins Commission Report, which basically
- 40:57Speaker 2: said all the things see effort coop said, which is
- 41:00Speaker 2: safe sex condoms that should go a long way in
- 41:03Speaker 2: helping The report made five hundred and seventy nine specific
- 41:08Speaker 2: recommendations for fighting the AIDS epidemic and Reagan implemented, eh,
- 41:14Speaker 2: maybe like five ten something like that, And so by
- 41:19Speaker 2: the end of his presidency, eighty nine thousand, three hundred
- 41:24Speaker 2: and forty three people had died of AIDS in the
- 41:27Speaker 2: United States. That blood is on that motherfucker's hands.
- 41:31Speaker 3: What's that number again, Adam.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Eighty nine thousand, three hundred and forty three.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Okay, I need to do a little bit of quick
- 41:38Speaker 3: arithmic ticking. This'll be worth it. That is thirty points
- 41:43Speaker 3: zero one, nine elevens. Ronald Reagan did thirty nine elevens
- 41:50Speaker 3: on gay people. Pretty mean, it does.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Suck that there's not just a like Google currency converter
- 41:58Speaker 2: for that.
- 41:59Speaker 3: You should this.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, let's start a website. How many nine elevens
- 42:07Speaker 2: was this dot com? And you just tied?
- 42:10Speaker 3: But someone was like, only like fifteen hundred people died
- 42:12Speaker 3: in Pearl Harbor. That's not even a whole nine to eleven.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Yeah. The one that I always bring up is the Hindenburg.
- 42:19Speaker 2: People act like the Hindenburg was this and it was
- 42:22Speaker 2: a massive tragedy, but like thirty people died. Oh, if
- 42:26Speaker 2: you watch the video, it's the balloon that's on fire.
- 42:30Speaker 2: But the people were in the fucking cabin. So if
- 42:33Speaker 2: you watch video of the Hindenburg falling to the ground,
- 42:37Speaker 2: once it lands, people just start streaming out. The only
- 42:41Speaker 2: people who died were like the last people to get out,
- 42:45Speaker 2: and it was because the balloon like collapsed around them
- 42:48Speaker 2: and they burned. But most of the people on the
- 42:51Speaker 2: Hindenburg got out, So quit fucking whining.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Well, this is alive and the Hindenburg wasn't that bad.
- 42:59Speaker 2: It really was.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Belt facts. Facts don't care about your feelings, folks.
- 43:03Speaker 2: So, yeah, Reagan killed what was it, thirty nine to
- 43:07Speaker 2: eleven's worth of people through his enactions. Yeah, and that's
- 43:12Speaker 2: just people who died of AIDS. We're not even talking
- 43:16Speaker 2: about all the people who died in Latin America when
- 43:19Speaker 2: he was just given the CIA a blank check to
- 43:22Speaker 2: do whatever the fuck they wanted to do in the
- 43:24Speaker 2: name of fighting communism. So, yeah, Reagan's a war criminal
- 43:28Speaker 2: and he should have gone to prison at some point.
- 43:31Speaker 3: I remember one time, and I don't know what compelled
- 43:33Speaker 3: him to say this, My childhood friend Kellen said that
- 43:36Speaker 3: when we catch Osama bin Laden, we should sew up
- 43:38Speaker 3: his butt cheeks and force feed them laxatives. And I
- 43:41Speaker 3: think that's what we should do to Ronald Reagan as
- 43:45Speaker 3: soon as time machine technology is invented.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I think your friend Kellen is ripping off the Wu
- 43:50Speaker 2: Tang clan.
- 43:51Speaker 3: That is from the intro to Method Man.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and seeing you and see and see which that
- 43:58Speaker 2: would be fucked up.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Apparently Puff Daddy loved to play torture with Method Man
- 44:04Speaker 3: when they were recording the song to what the only
- 44:06Speaker 3: feature I'm Ready to Die Biggi's first album. Yeah, And
- 44:09Speaker 3: while they were doing in the recording session, you have
- 44:11Speaker 3: to he kept Griffin on this torture. But one thing
- 44:13Speaker 3: he said was a fucking a fucking liquefire assets and
- 44:18Speaker 3: I always enjoyed that.
- 44:20Speaker 2: That's a good one. So that's our episode. We did it.
- 44:25Speaker 2: The Reagan movie is in theaters now. I would say
- 44:28Speaker 2: you should go to it and stand out front and protest,
- 44:31Speaker 2: and you have a.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Sign that says Reagan killed thirty nine to eleven's worth
- 44:35Speaker 3: of gay people with ag Yeah.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Treat the Reagan movie like Republicans treat an abortion clinic.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Just harass the shit out of anyone going into the
- 44:45Speaker 2: Reagan movie.
- 44:46Speaker 3: I want, like, you know, a bunch of crushpunks yelling
- 44:49Speaker 3: at an old man with those like really, you know,
- 44:51Speaker 3: and old men have the impossibly big sunglasses that stick
- 44:54Speaker 3: out like three inches from their nose because they have
- 44:56Speaker 3: like all the different blockers, And I just want a
- 44:59Speaker 3: guy wearing those sunglasses like cowering and fear well, just
- 45:03Speaker 3: a bunch of screaming gaze.
- 45:06Speaker 2: That would be nice to see. So Connor, thank you
- 45:09Speaker 2: so much for doing the pod. I appreciate it as always.
- 45:13Speaker 3: What thanks, Adam?
- 45:14Speaker 2: Do we have to plug before we get out of here?

- 46:10Speaker 3: be some activity happening there soon. I can to spoil.
