- 1:27now it's time for today's episode of the lineup. Two tough thugs,
- 1:34ladies and gentlemen. We take you now by a transcription behind the scenes of
- 1:38a police headquarters in a great American city. We're under the cold, glaring
- 1:42lights will pass before us. The innocent, the big room, the thief,
- 1:48the murderer. This is the lineup, mister Conway. Yes, yes,
- 2:24I'm Conway. I'm Lieutenant Guthrie. I talked to you on the phone
- 2:28this afternoon. Oh yes, Lieutenant. Well do you you think you have
- 2:32him? Well, we don't know, mister Conway. Like to have you
- 2:35tell us. Do my best, but it was a year ago. Yes,
- 2:38I know, any particular place you'd like to say, this will be
- 2:43fine. Okay, where you people really stay on it, don't you.
- 2:50I mean, it happened a long time ago. I thought you'd forgotten about
- 2:53it. Down here. We don't like to forget anything like that, mister
- 2:55Conway. Okay. Oh didn't I meet him once, Sergeant Coger, Yeah,
- 3:00he was on the case. Oh yeah, I remember. May I
- 3:04have your attention please? You people out there on the other side of the
- 3:07wire in the audience room, may I have your attention please? Thank you.
- 3:12My name is Corger, Sergeant Pete Cogger. I'll explain the lineup to
- 3:15you. Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call
- 3:17off a number, their name and charge. If you have any questions or
- 3:21identifications. Please remember the number of side of the prisoners. I call his
- 3:24name the under each line will ask the questions or identifications. Call out the
- 3:28number if you're sure. You're not too sure the suspect have him held.
- 3:32The officers who took your nable to assist you there seated among you. Please
- 3:36be prompt with your questions or identifications. When the prisoners leave here, they're
- 3:38sent to the washroom and dress back into the jail clothes. Makes it quite
- 3:43difficult to bring them back after they leave here. The questions I asked these
- 3:46suspects ability to get a natural tonal voice. Would not pay too much attention
- 3:50to their answers, as they often lie. Okay, bring on the line,
- 3:55all right, move it, ride along, boy, all the way
- 3:59to the end of the stay. Where is the man? Which one tall

- 7:40one who gave me the description, the one filed in the crime report.
- 7:43Yeah, I remember telling me what the man looked like. She was a
- 7:46pretty brave woman and I hated to see her die like that. It's gotten
- 7:50personal with me. I've been looking for Abrams ever since. I guess well,

- 8:16Jack Rourke alias George Freemont alias Victor Adams. Thirteen arrests, two convictions,
- 8:20both armed robbery, last one July nineteenth, nineteen forty seven. Got out
- 8:24eighteen months ago. For now he did, well, hold on back all
- 8:28right? Thirteenth? Yeah, yeah right, fine, Conway, thing happened
- 8:41thirteen months ago? Kelly? Could him been in town for it? All
- 8:45you have to do is prove he was here and find out who he was
- 8:48working with? Who were closer than you think? Hm? That was Asher.
- 8:50He went through Cully's hotel room, turned up an army forty five him
- 8:52in the mattress, and missus Conway was killed with a forty five slug,
- 8:56wasn't she? Yeah? Yeah, okay, we'll see what happens now.
- 9:22Then I should send out a tag on this. Yeah, he's checking with
- 9:26the army. Now give me a hand here, Oh yeah, hold on

- 10:05you can. Oh is she ready? Oh? Not quite? But the
- 10:09kids you got as measled? Oh you got those evident slugs? Then?
- 10:13Yeah, there you go. Oh right now, I'll see what we got.
- 10:22Both of these were taken from Missus Conway's body. No, no,
- 10:24just the one, the other stuck in the car. See. Yeah,
- 10:31hey, now if I can get this wax stuff there, Now, one
- 10:41of those test slugs I just fired on the ballistics box. There you go,
- 10:48thanks, Okay, stick it right here under the lens. Oh m
- 10:58hmmmm. Well take a look then, well I used the screws. Well,
- 11:07revolved the slug holders slowly. Yeah, and hold it when you think
- 11:13the striations match? Yeah, what do you think? Man? Just a
- 11:20second thing, and the test slug matches were the one that killed Missus Conway,
- 11:26right like a pair of twins. You guys got yourself a case.
- 11:31Who's the guy man named chick Cully? What do you have to say?
- 11:35Kind of later? I haven't talked to him yet. Well, you at
- 11:39least got something to talk about. A man, Hi, stuffy in here?
- 12:07Okay, Kelly, let's have it. Have what what are you jokers
- 12:11trying? To pull. We're trying to pull anything. Kelly. I'm asking
- 12:15you for a statement. Stay. I'll give you one nuts, Kelly.
- 12:22We want to know who you were working with, dumb cuffs and you can
- 12:28make it easier, you can make it tough any way you want it.
- 12:31We're giving you a chance. You don't need to get me a chance.
- 12:35You got nothing normally looked on it. We found your gun. Bullets from
- 12:39your gun killed missus Rita Conway in a parking lot hold up here a year
- 12:41ago. Two men were in on that job. The woman's husband has definitely
- 12:46identified you was one of them. It was your gun that killed it.
- 12:50We got you, Kelly. We want the other guy. I don't even
- 12:56want a gun. Who's the other guy, Kelly, dumb Cops? Who's
- 13:01the other guy? Cully? Dumb Cops? Who is he? Cully?
- 13:07Dumb Jert Cops? Hand me that quoder? Yeah, okay, where's your
- 13:18brother these days? Cully? He's still in Saint Louis. He was out
- 13:26here with you last year, wasn't he. You know? We'll get him,
- 13:31Cully. You know that, don't you? You get nothing here too?
- 13:37Stupid got him out of here. Asher. He'll talk later on on
- 13:43your feet. Chet, Yeah, sure, you're wrong, Guthrie. I
- 13:48won't talk later on, I got nothing to say. Come on, get
- 13:52him out. You guys will have a hard time tying this up. You
- 13:58go with him, Pete, okay, it so, I've got I'll help
- 14:03you asleep money you come on, Ben, Kelly, Kelly, stop,
- 14:09he's trying to get down to the garage. Crazy for what does he think
- 14:13he can do? Cully Hey, before he hits the car out of heat
- 14:16over his head? Are you still going? Yeah? Taking the emergency exits.
- 14:22Can't let him on the straight Cully stop? Okay, PE's true?
- 14:30Yeah, yeah, see try for his legs, man, I don't know.
- 14:41Please help him, Pete, call an ambulance. When America's schools are
- 15:03in trouble, All America is in trouble because a strong, enlightened democracy has
- 15:07its roots in good, free education. America's schools are in trouble now.
- 15:11They are overcrowded, understaffed, often in wretched condition. You can help to
- 15:16improve this situation by joining with civic groups or school boards in your own community
- 15:22and working with them to improve conditions. Here's a head Ashy then well for
- 15:48Wallapy gave you with those cuffs us some coffee bear and no thanks. Yep,
- 15:54yeah, okay, I'm black. Let me see. He's gonna say
- 16:00Lewis. She's on her way out here. Yeah, I talked to a
- 16:03long distance. We've got to be sure about all this. Test. Slugs
- 16:07from the gun we found in Cully's room match up with the start to kill
- 16:08missus. Conway Any himself made a part of identification on Kelly. Missus Cully's
- 16:14gonna have to know all these things, and she's gonna have to know him
- 16:17right. She's only been married to him six months since she's talked about false
- 16:21arrests and suits. Anything in the hotel room. Yeah, been staked out
- 16:25ever since we picked him up. No lizard, no phone call. How
- 16:30about his mam machine here you are. Saint Louis had a good file on
- 16:33him. He sent him the description of the man to pull the job with
- 16:37him. At least they looked up everyone in Cully's sheet. Not impossible.
- 16:41In the whole bunch. They're still looking at him. He could have been
- 16:42somebody tied up without hand. Yeah, it looks that way. Scatt's office
- 16:47is running through again. All we got is medium sized man, dark young
- 16:52and tough. I wish he'd been Cully's brother. Make got problems simpler.
- 16:57Huh. He was killed in him accident to lead us six months ago.
- 17:00Came in while you were out of the hospital. How about the army.
- 17:04There was nothing from them yet on the gun. We know that gun was
- 17:07the one used on missus Conley, but we don't know which one of them
- 17:11did. Conway was out of the picture when the shooting took place. It's
- 17:15a pretty good bet it's Cully's gun, since it was in his room.
- 17:18There was only one way to be sure. How's that find the man who
- 17:21was with him? Hi have been ild. He came to about an hours.
- 17:44I was doing nicely after we got the slug out of him. My
- 17:47nurse was in there getting him intravenous. He said. He opened his eyes
- 17:49and saw right off, knocked the equipment down, and he tried to climb
- 17:52out of bed. Yeah, and the hemorrhage started right away. No way
- 17:56to stop it. You're doing pretty well until then. Think you'll make it.
- 18:00No, yes, for a priest. I got Paula Hanson over here.
- 18:07You know what Kelly did. He broke a glass and tried to shove
- 18:10it in his face. Oh he was a real one. Yeah, you
- 18:15said anything. He had a lot to say. I'm kind of filthy here
- 18:18only once in a lifetime. Yeah, it's down here, better lose.
- 18:25That's a great Oh all right man, John Yeah, m hm Kelly Kelly,
- 18:47can you hear me? Yeah? Sure, guns it? That's your
- 18:52name, Chester Desmond Kelly. Yeah, where do you live? H?
- 19:00Well? This you understand you're seriously hurt coming you you love this, Kelly.
- 19:11You're on your way out, you know. Then we showed a second
- 19:18book to deal with me. Are you willing to make a statement now?
- 19:23Hey, we want the name of the man who was with you when you
- 19:26kill missus Conway Kelly, jac Kelly, he got. I don't know what
- 19:40you believe it or what you feel about this, but you know we'll get
- 19:44that man sooner or later. Kelly, you can do something in your own
- 19:48favor right now. Tell us who he is, where we can find him.
- 19:56Oh? Look, every man wants a chance to h M. Well
- 20:02please, most of all like what he was with me? Sy sure?
- 20:14Good? Okay, you s got an order? Yeah that's all? Then?
- 20:32Yeah, I don't think you figure I got I get then you can't
- 21:00man, I climb beat around, not not sure anything new. Yeah,
- 21:03I got a kickback on Kelly. Yeah, Detroit police won a match test
- 21:07slugs with us. Kelly sounds like the same aunt of Robin killed a filling
- 21:10station man there six months ago, used the forty five working alone. Oh,
- 21:15description of his accomplice came with a request matches with Conway's description of the
- 21:18man with Kelly. Yeah, the forty five is US Army property, all
- 21:22right? Stolen? They're listed? Is missing? How about the cereal?
- 21:26There's a figure gun disappeared in the flat somewhere. Kelly was never in the
- 21:29army. You may never get that part straightened down unless his friend tells us.
- 21:33Yeah, you can follow up on Detroit's request. Centem on we have
- 21:37right then then, Oh, I think we may have me uh Crocket Merge
- 21:41staked out at the hotel. Just picked up the man who came in and
- 21:44asked me to see Kelly. Suber came. Ben tried for his gun when
- 21:48they said they were police officers. Okay, rogers inside suck mhm, sit
- 22:12down, rogers, you and change running. That's right, Sit down.
- 22:17What's the idea of picking me up? What's you have a permit for the
- 22:21gun? The kidding? Now you know where you're here? Look you haven't
- 22:25done and go hold you know I haven't done anything. What are you worried
- 22:27about it? Listen? Why don't they smart talk from nobody? Cop on
- 22:32that? Why try to pull the gun when the officer stepped in? I
- 22:33didn't like that? Look, so how do I know to what cops in?
- 22:36They told you they showed you the badgers? Why the gun? I
- 22:41use it? Bases? What business travelers? Silk, Julie, how do
- 22:45you travel? What do you mean hot? Our plane, train, line,
- 22:48train? It's your home? No trains? The city? What's your
- 22:52address there? Forty five or sixteen? First seven? How long have you
- 22:56been in town? What trains are coming on? What time to get in?
- 23:00I don't remember? You don't remember? Oh I don't remember. Where
- 23:04are you're staying? Rogers? Oh look I don't have to go through this
- 23:10kind of stuff. Now book me if you want to book me for whatever,
- 23:11you want to book me for the out of hand twenty four hours,
- 23:15Just book me. It wouldn't work, Rogers. We're talking about a murder.
- 23:21What a murder? Yeah? Anway, Conwayne, have you ever seen
- 23:36this man before, n I'd like this. Yeah, not come on,
- 23:42stupid, Did you ever seen me before? I have seen him before.
- 23:48Where mister Conway in a hocking lap of a Strand theater year ago? You're
- 23:52set. I would never forget his stag doing that. Other man killed my
- 23:59glass in Coolbrook, he killed what's with this? Thank you for coming down
- 24:04with Tony, Thank you good guy? All right now, what's all that's
- 24:14supposed to mean? Mean? Jurrett Rogers tied up with Kelly. That's enough
- 24:18for us. Tied up with whole chet Cully, the man you went to
- 24:22see at the hotel when the office had picked you up. Come off at
- 24:23Rogers. We got your cold. We weren't stick up with him. He
- 24:26killed the filling station man in Detroit. He killed that Conway woman out here
- 24:30a year ago. You've just been identified. Be smart. I don't know
- 24:32if you guys had suffering about I must sales. Not a stick up.
- 24:34That won't get you anywhere. Prolly was just a name on a card and
- 24:37me I told him to see who gave you the name? Kelly told us
- 24:41everything. Holly hasn't told you anything. No, No, I don't even
- 24:47think you've got him and we've got him right when you've got to show me
- 24:49copy Okay, we'll show you on top. I felt you were taken in

- 25:30you see Yeah? Feel all right, lanky, I feel okay, looks
- 25:37kind of peak it to me, think, yeah, I'll come on.
- 25:41What is this? Section two? Then to eighteen after it? What happened?
- 25:49We got shots angu escape. You know, we had him cold.
- 25:53I don't believe he was jerk Cups. That was that dumb jerk cup?
- 26:02Yeah, hang him the south Rogers, I'm what you would understand. Yeah,

- 28:14the questions or identifications. Don't ask the number if you're law and a trucier.
- 28:18Loveday The Line Up starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guffrie with Jack Moyle,
