- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, Mizzano really did have it all. A wooden leg
- 0:03Speaker 1: katm becoming unchained literally and a certain mister Mark Marquez
- 0:08Speaker 1: stripping off on the podium and that wasn't on my
- 0:10Speaker 1: bingo card. The doctor was in the house, a couple
- 0:13Speaker 1: of F one superstars made an appearance, and finally we
- 0:16Speaker 1: got to see the V four on track, and our
- 0:20Speaker 1: very own Joe Kelso made his twenty twenty six signing
- 0:22Speaker 1: announcement too.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So we have.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Got a lot to unpack here. This episode of Pit
- 0:28Speaker 1: Talk is powered by Shannon's Insurance. I'm your host, Rnita vmullen.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Alongside me is my ever knowledgeable partner in crime, mister
- 0:36Speaker 1: Matt Clayton. But before we get into it, Matt.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We've got a very special guest here.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Some former listeners from another podcast that might recognize this gentleman.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But for the older.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Generation, shall we say former Grand Prix writer Keith and
- 0:51Speaker 1: the OG voices of Moto GP mister Keith Hewan Keith.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This feels like a bit of days JA.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Vote for me, pep bumping in you every now and again.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I think the last time was Thailand when we were outing.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Buriram like a bad smell.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Hi thank you. How did you tell that from all
- 1:12Speaker 4: the way over there?
- 1:15Speaker 5: And microph yours is pretty sensitive for a leader, I'll
- 1:17Speaker 5: say that, but I don't know if.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We can tell from my intro.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yes, there was a lot of funny stuff happening on
- 1:24Speaker 1: and off track this weekend, but there's also a lot
- 1:26Speaker 1: that we need to get into and unpack him in
- 1:29Speaker 1: all seriousness, because we've got Mark Marquez who's now got
- 1:32Speaker 1: the match point, We've got that Zechi who was on
- 1:34Speaker 1: pole and on the podium on the weekend, Mark crushing
- 1:37Speaker 1: out the sprint. Matt, I'm going to hand this over
- 1:40Speaker 1: to you like we normally do, because Mizano you told
- 1:44Speaker 1: me keep an eye on and a bas shanini and
- 1:47Speaker 1: that's where we play out.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Did it?
- 1:49Speaker 5: No, that didn't go so well. But it's funny when
- 1:51Speaker 5: you were going through your intro before the sheer number
- 1:55Speaker 5: of things that happened over the course of the weekend,
- 1:57Speaker 5: and I sort of when you mentioned the Bazari prosthetic
- 2:00Speaker 5: leg and the very weird explanation about that, I was like, oh, yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 5: that happened as well. There was so much going on
- 2:06Speaker 5: over the course of the weekend. But I think you
- 2:08Speaker 5: kind of buried the lead a little bit there in
- 2:10Speaker 5: that well, you know, Mark Marquez has this inevitable match
- 2:13Speaker 5: point now in Japan coming up in a couple of weeks,
- 2:16Speaker 5: and I don't know how you feel about it, And Keith,
- 2:18Speaker 5: maybe i'll throw this one to you as well. We're
- 2:21Speaker 5: looking at a guy who's about to win a seventh
- 2:23Speaker 5: Premier Class world title, and you don't want to start
- 2:26Speaker 5: comparing world titles like comparing your children, right, which is
- 2:29Speaker 5: you know you don't want to go down that path.
- 2:31Speaker 5: But when you've got seven of these things, given what
- 2:34Speaker 5: he's come from, is this one the best of the seven?
- 2:37Speaker 5: Do you think when it happens or are we looking
- 2:39Speaker 5: back to maybe twenty fourteen or twenty nineteen is being
- 2:42Speaker 5: batter because it's hard to split them, but the context
- 2:44Speaker 5: of where he's come from for this one feels more
- 2:46Speaker 5: significant to me. How do you see it?
- 2:50Speaker 4: I see it significant in a couple of ways.
- 2:53Speaker 3: One is, I don't think the twenty five bike is
- 2:55Speaker 3: anything like the best bike. I think that they've ended
- 2:58Speaker 3: up with a situation where Bani I can't make work
- 3:00Speaker 3: a tour. I won't say I feel sorry for Pecko,
- 3:03Speaker 3: but if you remember Anita. Early on in the other
- 3:06Speaker 3: podcast that I used to be involved with I am
- 3:09Speaker 3: still involved with, I did say that Peco was cooked,
- 3:13Speaker 3: but I just didn't expect him to be quite as
- 3:14Speaker 3: well done as he has been this year so far.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I mean, in recent times, it's just been awful. Twenty
- 3:20Speaker 3: first qualifier, you know, it's a situation where that motorbike
- 3:24Speaker 3: just doesn't suit him. They can't get it around at
- 3:26Speaker 3: the end of the day. Why should they when they've
- 3:27Speaker 3: got Markus doing the business on it. Anyway, He'd have
- 3:29Speaker 3: been better off on the twenty four bike, there's no
- 3:31Speaker 3: doubt about that.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Another man that.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I do actually feel sorry for is Markers. Alex Markers
- 3:38Speaker 3: because he's never going to win a world championship unless
- 3:41Speaker 3: Mark lets him.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Imagine that in the family lump.
- 3:46Speaker 3: It's one of those situations where Alex Markes really it
- 3:50Speaker 3: took him a wild and win Moto three, it took
- 3:51Speaker 3: him a wild win Moto two. But of course he
- 3:55Speaker 3: is potentially a world champion in Moto GP as well.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I mean, but he's so underrested, made and so overlooked
- 4:01Speaker 3: in what he's achieving. I just can't help but feel
- 4:06Speaker 3: a little sorry for him. And it's his brother who
- 4:09Speaker 3: used to say that that Alex is at a faster
- 4:12Speaker 3: motorbike racer than me. I think that might have been
- 4:14Speaker 3: off road a little bit more than it is where
- 4:16Speaker 3: we are now. But but at the time Mark always
- 4:18Speaker 3: used to big him up. But now we've got a
- 4:21Speaker 3: situation where we're going to have a one and two
- 4:23Speaker 3: Marcus brothers this year. I mean, what a fan you
- 4:25Speaker 3: know for family markets what it's unprecedented. I mean we've seen,
- 4:29Speaker 3: you know, father son type for world champions in the past,
- 4:32Speaker 3: but but brothers, you know, one and two in the series.
- 4:35Speaker 3: You know what a spare he is if Mark Mark doesn't.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Spare.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I love the.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Fact though, that what you're saying is something similar that
- 4:46Speaker 1: we've said before, and I want to say it again.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Is Mark is like a Lamborghinia of Ferrari. He's a
- 4:53Speaker 1: sports car, and Alex Marquez is like a Diesel truck
- 4:56Speaker 1: and he takes his time to build up to the
- 4:58Speaker 1: speed and get faster. But now now we're seeing that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: But I think you did hit the nail on the head.
- 5:03Speaker 1: There's like, is Alex ever going to get that Moto
- 5:07Speaker 1: GP world champion or is he always just going to
- 5:10Speaker 1: be the bridesmaid? Is it until Mark leaves? And it
- 5:14Speaker 1: is Mark ever going to leave?
- 5:17Speaker 5: Well, one way you could look at it, well, so
- 5:20Speaker 5: what if Mark? So if Mark gets seven this year
- 5:22Speaker 5: and he gets eight next year, which means he beats Valentino,
- 5:25Speaker 5: then does Alex ask him around the dinner table like
- 5:27Speaker 5: you were saying Keith, It's like, do you reckon? I
- 5:29Speaker 5: can have next year? Will that be all right? You reckon?
- 5:31Speaker 5: He asks him then, because then it's like, well you've
- 5:33Speaker 5: got yourself past ROSSI what else are you doing at
- 5:35Speaker 5: this point you'll be thirty four years old? Like, if
- 5:38Speaker 5: I get a good start of the season, might you
- 5:40Speaker 5: let me have one? Maybe that's the only way it happens.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen in a
- 5:45Speaker 4: million years. Mark. Mark is own wired that way, is he?
- 5:48Speaker 3: He's got to look to see what he's going through
- 5:50Speaker 3: you get to where he I mean, he's a remarkable,
- 5:52Speaker 3: remarkable man, a remarkable remarkable athlete to come back from
- 5:57Speaker 3: what he's come back through.
- 5:57Speaker 4: We've seen it.
- 5:58Speaker 3: With your compatrion doing. Do you class him as your
- 6:01Speaker 3: compatriots as you're from Essex, Matt If he's winning, Yes,
- 6:09Speaker 3: similar philosophy. Yeah, but you know, like Doing came back
- 6:13Speaker 3: with a leg that was half hanging off. At the
- 6:16Speaker 3: time that he came back and did what he did,
- 6:18Speaker 3: he was, you know, mighty Mick, and we still think
- 6:20Speaker 3: of him like that. Obviously, he's my era, so I
- 6:22Speaker 3: can remember exactly what he went through.
- 6:25Speaker 4: And how he did it.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Mark, you know, the operations he's had to go through
- 6:29Speaker 3: as well, would finish any normal mortal man would. He
- 6:32Speaker 3: wouldn't even see someone come back like that. And he's
- 6:35Speaker 3: working his way around a motorbike that isn't quite where
- 6:38Speaker 3: it ought to be for some reason or another, and
- 6:40Speaker 3: we're moving in. The exciting part of it is, I
- 6:43Speaker 3: think the motivation might not be so much the numbers,
- 6:46Speaker 3: although the Valentino Rossi tag of course, will be a
- 6:48Speaker 3: lovely little number for him to surpass that. I'm sure
- 6:51Speaker 3: that is in the back of his mind somewhere, if
- 6:53Speaker 3: only subconsciously. But of course we're going to be moving
- 6:55Speaker 3: into another era very soon as well, which is going
- 6:58Speaker 3: to be tantalizing for the Mark. He's going to want
- 7:01Speaker 3: to do that twenty twenty seven, when we have all
- 7:02Speaker 3: the rule changes and we have the new new products
- 7:05Speaker 3: out on track. I think he's going to be looking
- 7:06Speaker 3: forward to that as well. So thirty four you mentioned
- 7:11Speaker 3: that number. Thirty four, Well, bloody hell, you know, Rossi
- 7:15Speaker 3: was into his forties, well into his forties, and before
- 7:17Speaker 3: he rolled over, and he was still competitive. Whatever anybody says, Valentino,
- 7:21Speaker 3: Rossi was still there or there about. So I don't
- 7:23Speaker 3: see any reason why Mark mark Is can't go on
- 7:26Speaker 3: for another ten.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Years, right, something you did something you just said then
- 7:30Speaker 5: before that was really interesting that I hadn't really considered
- 7:32Speaker 5: about twenty seven. When you've done as much winning as
- 7:35Speaker 5: Mark has. He look at the way this year is gone.
- 7:38Speaker 5: You sometimes need like an external stimulus to motivate you
- 7:42Speaker 5: for that next thing. And so you look at what
- 7:44Speaker 5: he's done this year after all the surgeries and the
- 7:46Speaker 5: time in the wilderness with Honda and what have you.
- 7:48Speaker 5: This is like one of the rare cases where the
- 7:50Speaker 5: sequel might be better than the original. Like he's come
- 7:53Speaker 5: back as in this second career, and he's done it
- 7:56Speaker 5: a different way and older, wiser, smarter, maybe not on
- 7:59Speaker 5: the best bite, Like maybe you get to twenty seven,
- 8:01Speaker 5: it's like, well how about I try and master this
- 8:04Speaker 5: as well? So we're all looking at twenty seven as
- 8:07Speaker 5: being this potential hard reset for the series, and maybe
- 8:09Speaker 5: this is when things will change. The other side to
- 8:12Speaker 5: look at that is like this might be the external
- 8:14Speaker 5: stimulus that he needs. It's like, well, now I can
- 8:16Speaker 5: show you I can ride these bikes as well, and
- 8:18Speaker 5: we might be in for a period of even more
- 8:20Speaker 5: of this.
- 8:22Speaker 4: That's exactly what I meant.
- 8:25Speaker 3: And if it didn't come across like that, well done
- 8:28Speaker 3: for putting it in some order.
- 8:29Speaker 4: That's fine.
- 8:30Speaker 5: I'll just translate that into Australia for our audience.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Keep that's fine, It's now you've got it. I mean,
- 8:36Speaker 3: it's bang on. I think that the only thing that
- 8:38Speaker 3: he's going to run out of is motivation at the
- 8:41Speaker 3: end of the day, you know, like to he's walked
- 8:44Speaker 3: away with just about everything this year and the second
- 8:46Speaker 3: somebody gives him a bit of a push.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I was having a quick look through the stats. I
- 8:49Speaker 3: actually did some research, Ren, which is very unusual, you
- 8:52Speaker 3: know what I'm like, actually got a bit of paper
- 8:56Speaker 3: and the number four is the worst he's been all yearther.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It be a finishing position or a qualifying position. I mean,
- 9:03Speaker 3: that is some way to go during the course of
- 9:05Speaker 3: a year. If you can say your worst worst events ever,
- 9:08Speaker 3: when you look at poor old Bangnaya, who's still third
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the championship, you know, twenty first qualifier. I mean,
- 9:15Speaker 3: I can't imagine the state that Peco's heads in when
- 9:18Speaker 3: he gets back to the I have a very, very minute,
- 9:22Speaker 3: much lower grade way of thinking with this, because when
- 9:25Speaker 3: I'd ride back into my garage and my teammate or
- 9:29Speaker 3: my major competitor on the other side of the garage
- 9:32Speaker 3: was was sitting there smugly looking at the monitor because
- 9:34Speaker 3: they all do that and you and it's it's automatic.
- 9:38Speaker 3: All these people will gravitate around mark all the text.
- 9:41Speaker 4: All the main data guys, all that will all be.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Watching what he's doing, and Peco will be like billion
- 9:46Speaker 3: omates that over the other side of the garage were
- 9:49Speaker 3: just the odd word of consolation from from the missus
- 9:52Speaker 3: and the like. And it is a shit place to be.
- 9:56Speaker 3: It is just the worst mentally state to be in.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And you've got to be something very very special, very
- 10:03Speaker 3: very strong to pull yourself.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Out of that hole.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Marquez is that man. He's the kind of guy that
- 10:08Speaker 3: could do it. Peco has always come across to me
- 10:11Speaker 3: is just that little bit more sensitive. You know, you
- 10:13Speaker 3: saw Davida Todotsi having a go at him, saying you've
- 10:17Speaker 3: got to take it to him. You've got to be
- 10:18Speaker 3: more forceful earlier on in the year. You've got to
- 10:21Speaker 3: you know, you've got to bat a bit harder. But
- 10:23Speaker 3: he ain't that kind of guy. He's a precision instrument,
- 10:26Speaker 3: is you know, precision instrument with a sort of easily
- 10:30Speaker 3: breakable blade.
- 10:33Speaker 1: So my question to you, Keith as being like an
- 10:35Speaker 1: X race, is how does Pecker then get out.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Of his own head?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Because to me, it's like, okay, yeah, we see he's
- 10:42Speaker 1: not gelling with the biank, but it's almost now we
- 10:45Speaker 1: see that his mind is so jumbled, right, how does
- 10:48Speaker 1: he get out of that and just ride?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Monor GP is about work.
- 10:55Speaker 3: You've heard the riders are not riders, but they're reps
- 10:57Speaker 3: bloody complaining about the extra work they're having to do
- 11:00Speaker 3: at the moment.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Pr wise, you know, it's something that I don't feel.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It's all sorry for them, by the way, I mean,
- 11:06Speaker 3: the fact of the matter is in the constitution they
- 11:09Speaker 3: should do more bloody work towards the fans and towards
- 11:11Speaker 3: the You know, the public. It shouldn't be a situation.
- 11:14Speaker 3: It should be more like NASCAR or or something along there.
- 11:17Speaker 3: You know, you'll have a series out there that that
- 11:19Speaker 3: is similar that where they have to do something for
- 11:21Speaker 3: the fans. They have to be their presentation wise, and
- 11:25Speaker 3: I think that work is what it's going to be about.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I suppose that the reason.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Why you're hearing more winging about you know, not doing
- 11:33Speaker 3: these pr things is because they wrap their heads around
- 11:36Speaker 3: these little problems that they've got and they cannot focus
- 11:39Speaker 3: on anything else. They want to just concentrate on that
- 11:41Speaker 3: minute detail that they're trying to get right on the
- 11:43Speaker 3: bike reading data. I don't know whether you two have
- 11:46Speaker 3: ever tried doing it, but it's like an impossible, bloody
- 11:49Speaker 3: screen full of squiggly lines, and now they've got like
- 11:51Speaker 3: six s greens full of squiggly lines that they're trying
- 11:54Speaker 3: to decipher in between all the bits and pieces that
- 11:57Speaker 3: are going on. Recently we've seen about them maybe in
- 12:00Speaker 3: you know, Moto three and Mono two a little bit
- 12:03Speaker 3: and pulling them back as in Formula one where you've
- 12:05Speaker 3: got the GP two, GP three or whatever it is,
- 12:07Speaker 3: and they're sort of in the car park pattern and
- 12:10Speaker 3: they're not really well focused on, whereas in our GP
- 12:13Speaker 3: series we're quite unique in that we rate Moto three
- 12:15Speaker 3: in Moto two almost as highly as we rate Mono GP,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and quite right to it in my own opinion. But
- 12:20Speaker 3: the fact is I can see a situation coming where
- 12:24Speaker 3: they are pushed to one side and more time is
- 12:26Speaker 3: given to Moto GP, more space is given to Mothero GP.
- 12:30Speaker 4: They're going to need.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It because they are a the premier class but technically
- 12:34Speaker 3: the most difficult class to get everything right. And I
- 12:37Speaker 3: think with Pecko, if we go back to the original subject,
- 12:40Speaker 3: you know, he's got an incredible amount of work to
- 12:43Speaker 3: try and do to decipher what is wrong with that bite,
- 12:46Speaker 3: why he is not able to gel with that motorbike.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Whereas Mark Markus, who is one of them annoying, really
- 12:52Speaker 3: annoying people, that seems to be able to ride around.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Whatever he's got, he gets it to where he thinks,
- 12:57Speaker 3: you know, the best he can get it to do,
- 12:59Speaker 3: and then the rest he does.
- 12:59Speaker 4: In in in style and writing.
- 13:02Speaker 3: It's notable this year, you know, particularly this year, I
- 13:05Speaker 3: think on that Ducati, he's completely his style has changed completely.
- 13:09Speaker 4: He's nowhere near hanging his arse out every single where
- 13:11Speaker 4: that he can.
- 13:11Speaker 3: He's nowhere near tuck in the front every single corner.
- 13:14Speaker 3: He's nowhere near locking the break up every time that
- 13:17Speaker 3: he enters. He's really smoothed himself out and brought himself
- 13:20Speaker 3: into the Jucati domain to make that work for him.
- 13:22Speaker 4: And I'm really impressed with that.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I mean, I sound like a Marquez fanboy, and I
- 13:27Speaker 3: suppose from a I am actually I am. I mean,
- 13:31Speaker 3: I don't see and he's like, you know, over here,
- 13:33Speaker 3: we got David Beckham. Everybody hates David Beckham for some
- 13:36Speaker 3: reason or another, but he's a smooth guy with his
- 13:37Speaker 3: will suit, his missus looks all right, and you think
- 13:39Speaker 3: to yourself, why shouldn't he be the you know? And
- 13:44Speaker 3: the same thing with Marcus Marquees is, yeah, he's got everything.
- 13:47Speaker 3: He's got everything. I mean, I'm sitting here jealous as hell.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I mean, i'd buy me Mark Markus tomorrow if I
- 13:51Speaker 4: had an opportunity. I wouldn't.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I wouldn't buy his well, I wouldn't buy his bag
- 13:55Speaker 5: balance for sure. But something you touched on then, kay,
- 13:57Speaker 5: is something that we that read it. Her and I
- 13:59Speaker 5: talk about a f on this podcast in that Mark's
- 14:02Speaker 5: the best rider in motor GP when he's got the
- 14:04Speaker 5: best bike, but more annoyingly than that, he's the best
- 14:06Speaker 5: rider in motor GP when he doesn't. And I think
- 14:09Speaker 5: that's the difference you've seen with him this year in
- 14:11Speaker 5: that this new era remark, all of a sudden is
- 14:13Speaker 5: the best tire manager in motor GP, which I don't
- 14:16Speaker 5: think we would have said about him in career one,
- 14:18Speaker 5: you know, the Honda Halsion days, because now you know
- 14:21Speaker 5: that he's going to have more tire than the guy
- 14:23Speaker 5: that he's fighting against at the back end of a
- 14:25Speaker 5: race if he needs it. He's just added another sort
- 14:28Speaker 5: of you know, another string to his bow if you like.
- 14:30Speaker 5: But the thing you were saying about Pecko before is
- 14:33Speaker 5: interesting to me in that there's so much data now,
- 14:36Speaker 5: there's so many ways you can try and find ways
- 14:39Speaker 5: to extract yourself from a hole that you're in, and
- 14:42Speaker 5: Pecko's more of a he's more of an engineering led,
- 14:46Speaker 5: data driven rider who won't necessarily just stick his brain
- 14:50Speaker 5: on the shelf when he goes out there and try
- 14:51Speaker 5: and ride this thing and not fiddle with it the
- 14:53Speaker 5: entire weekend. He's looking for the perfect solution to an
- 14:56Speaker 5: imperfect problem, and the deeper we get into this season.
- 15:00Speaker 5: It's interesting. At the start of the season, it felt
- 15:02Speaker 5: like it was the bike that was holding him back,
- 15:03Speaker 5: and now it feels like this his head is holding
- 15:05Speaker 5: him back. It feels like it's a different problem with
- 15:08Speaker 5: the same result now if you know what I mean,
- 15:10Speaker 5: and that the results are going backwards if anything, But
- 15:12Speaker 5: I don't know for the same reason that they were
- 15:14Speaker 5: at the start of the season. It seems much more
- 15:16Speaker 5: of a mental block that he now has with this
- 15:21Speaker 5: bike as opposed to the actual physics of the bike itself.
- 15:25Speaker 3: I bet he wishes his management had done a different
- 15:27Speaker 3: deal when Mark was in coming, because I think you
- 15:29Speaker 3: would have been looking to yourself and thinking, now can
- 15:31Speaker 3: I cope? Well, I mean we all talked about it
- 15:32Speaker 3: before Mark arrived in the garage. You know Mark, Mark
- 15:35Speaker 3: is He's a ruthless individual. Now he's going to get
- 15:38Speaker 3: an advantage in mechanically, technically, physically, every way you can
- 15:43Speaker 3: possibly think. He is going to be a weapon as
- 15:45Speaker 3: soon as he gets the other side of the garage.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I think that would have been the time to go
- 15:48Speaker 3: and look at maybe going to back to Grassini, maybe
- 15:52Speaker 3: go to Grissini and ride the twenty floor bike that
- 15:54Speaker 3: would have been I mean, Alex Marcus can do what
- 15:56Speaker 3: he's doing on any bike. Then I think that Peco
- 16:00Speaker 3: he must rule the day that his management or even
- 16:03Speaker 3: he allowed.
- 16:04Speaker 4: I wonder if you had You know, quite often when.
- 16:06Speaker 3: You have incoming riders, this won't apply to mart Markets
- 16:09Speaker 3: because anybody that has got mar Markets, you know, as
- 16:12Speaker 3: a possibility, is going to sign him. But in lots
- 16:15Speaker 3: of teams there's usually a little bit of a veto
- 16:17Speaker 3: in there that the other rider can can make a
- 16:21Speaker 3: few comments as they now, I don't really want that
- 16:22Speaker 3: guy as a partner, and you know, I don't really
- 16:24Speaker 3: want him in here. But of course Pecko he was
- 16:28Speaker 3: on a no win situation because if he hadn't even
- 16:30Speaker 3: kicked off and said no, I don't want to ride
- 16:31Speaker 3: with mart Marcus, he had been called a pussy left,
- 16:33Speaker 3: right and center. So yeah, it's one of those situations
- 16:35Speaker 3: where no win for Peco, which is why I said
- 16:39Speaker 3: at the beginning of the year that Pecko has cooked,
- 16:41Speaker 3: because you could just have seen it come in so
- 16:43Speaker 3: many times. It's as if it's as if us punters
- 16:46Speaker 3: who sit watching Telly and sit on our lounge with
- 16:48Speaker 3: our beer in our end, no more than the riders,
- 16:52Speaker 3: because they're too close to it. Almost, they're almost too
- 16:56Speaker 3: close to it. I mean, if I was Pecko, you know,
- 16:58Speaker 3: if he'd sat back in his in his setti and
- 17:01Speaker 3: thought for himself, should have I really got to put
- 17:03Speaker 3: up with mark markets?
- 17:04Speaker 4: How can I get out of this? What's what's my
- 17:07Speaker 4: best work? Yeah, I'm damn sure I'd have been looking
- 17:11Speaker 4: for a way out of it.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I really wasn't expecting you to say that at all.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But I love it and I agree.
- 17:19Speaker 1: But moving on to the other side of outside of
- 17:23Speaker 1: the Jucaddi world, I feel like it's kind of the
- 17:25Speaker 1: same thing with Bez and Jorge at a Prillier. Right.
- 17:28Speaker 1: It was coming into the season, it was Joge is
- 17:30Speaker 1: going to be the number one writer, and then look
- 17:33Speaker 1: what's happened is he had all those crashes, he missed
- 17:35Speaker 1: the first half of the year, and Bez had to
- 17:38Speaker 1: go and carry the weight of a factory rider and
- 17:41Speaker 1: the factory team on his shoulders. And now look.
- 17:44Speaker 2: At what he's doing.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I feel like it's like the complete opposite of Peco, Right.
- 17:49Speaker 4: I think a Prillia it took a bit of a dip,
- 17:51Speaker 4: didn't they. It was all a bit concerning.
- 17:53Speaker 3: You know, we're all expecting the Aprilia to and obviously
- 17:56Speaker 3: Jorge to be doing the business on it. But then
- 17:59Speaker 3: it took a bit of a nose dye for a
- 18:01Speaker 3: moment or two. But they've recovered remarkably well. I mean,
- 18:03Speaker 3: I'm really impressed with how a Prillier have turned their
- 18:06Speaker 3: year around, you know, when you see the struggles that
- 18:08Speaker 3: Katm are having as well.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I mean, I wasn't even sure we're going to have
- 18:10Speaker 4: Katm on the.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Grid this year after their financial disasters out in Austria.
- 18:15Speaker 3: So to see, you know, good old Coster doing a
- 18:18Speaker 3: bit okay, they need something a little bit tougher in
- 18:21Speaker 3: the training department maybe, but you know they've come back
- 18:25Speaker 3: fairly well too. But there's no beating you know, a
- 18:30Speaker 3: man like mar Marcus. It's just if you took him
- 18:32Speaker 3: out of the equation, Alex Markus will be world champion
- 18:36Speaker 3: probably a year that would be m hm.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Had interesting. It's interesting.
- 18:42Speaker 5: It's interesting what you were saying before, Rineta about the
- 18:45Speaker 5: Beteki thing, in that a prillion might have stumbled across
- 18:48Speaker 5: something here by accident, in that you know, they clearly
- 18:52Speaker 5: paid Martine all the money and got him across from
- 18:54Speaker 5: Decaddy to be the team leader, and with him not
- 18:57Speaker 5: being there, and then also you have to think emotionally
- 18:59Speaker 5: the fact that he trying to get himself out of
- 19:01Speaker 5: there for all those months until he realized it was
- 19:02Speaker 5: going to be too expensive to get himself out of
- 19:04Speaker 5: there and he had to stay put. They might have,
- 19:07Speaker 5: you know, the responsibility that got thrown on Berzeki, like
- 19:10Speaker 5: ever since Silverston when he won that race, but even
- 19:13Speaker 5: the sprint at Silverston he was awesome in that he
- 19:15Speaker 5: just missed the podium in that from a long way back,
- 19:17Speaker 5: and since then, I think, if my MAT's a right,
- 19:19Speaker 5: I think he's been a second high scoring writer since Silverstone.
- 19:22Speaker 5: It doesn't feel like a flash in the pan anymore.
- 19:24Speaker 5: There's just this consistency with it now and it feels
- 19:27Speaker 5: like he's grown with the team and the team has
- 19:30Speaker 5: kind of put its arm around him a little bit
- 19:32Speaker 5: and embraced that. And I don't know what you think, Keith,
- 19:34Speaker 5: but so much of this is, you know, played between
- 19:37Speaker 5: the years with these riders. I loved what Massimo Rivella
- 19:40Speaker 5: did with the whole handling of the Martine situation when
- 19:43Speaker 5: that was going on for two reasons, he made it
- 19:47Speaker 5: very clear to Martin, we would like you to stay,
- 19:50Speaker 5: and then had to put his foot down when it
- 19:52Speaker 5: became a legal issue. But by the same token, they
- 19:55Speaker 5: were begging Bozeki up to put him into a position
- 19:57Speaker 5: where he could capitalize on the bike if it got
- 19:59Speaker 5: go again. And this shows that, you know, when you
- 20:03Speaker 5: get the right man manager in the right position, you
- 20:05Speaker 5: can actually have successful outcomes on both sides of the garage.
- 20:08Speaker 5: And yeah, the bike's improved technically, sure, but I think
- 20:11Speaker 5: the way they've handled those two riders this year independently
- 20:14Speaker 5: has actually been a real benefit for what they've done
- 20:17Speaker 5: this year. It's been really really well handled.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I think I don't know you, Matt, but you've obviously
- 20:22Speaker 4: been paying attention what you were saying. Just then.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Excuse me, it was in my head to say next,
- 20:32Speaker 3: because I think I think he's done a great job, Rivola,
- 20:36Speaker 3: And you're so right the way he's handled that situation.
- 20:38Speaker 3: And when I mentioned that dip that a prillier ad
- 20:40Speaker 3: that was as he gathered them up, as he pulled
- 20:42Speaker 3: them back together again, and I think it was really
- 20:44Speaker 3: good management. Riders again, as you say, it's north of
- 20:49Speaker 3: the eyebrows. And if one's spinning off out of control,
- 20:53Speaker 3: bringing him back into the fold, bringing him back gen
- 20:56Speaker 3: bloody hell. That's a difficult task for management. That really
- 20:58Speaker 3: is quite a tough situation. And again compare that, if
- 21:01Speaker 3: you like with David a too Dootsi shouting publicly almost
- 21:06Speaker 3: in the face of Peco magnaia you've got to be
- 21:08Speaker 3: tough and you've got you've got to sticking in a
- 21:10Speaker 3: bit harder or whatever the actual words were that he
- 21:12Speaker 3: said in the Italian. But it's a situation where Revola,
- 21:15Speaker 3: almost unseen, just gathered them up, as you say, put
- 21:18Speaker 3: their arm around him, rent and brought them back into
- 21:21Speaker 3: into the fold. And I think that's his management was
- 21:24Speaker 3: worth the money they paid Revola when he came over
- 21:26Speaker 3: from F one and it's it definitely is paying off.
- 21:29Speaker 4: So yet big up to a prillion to be able
- 21:31Speaker 4: to put that together.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Well my next thought, Matt, I don't know if you've
- 21:36Speaker 1: thought about this bar. I'm going to throw it to
- 21:37Speaker 1: Keith to see with boy Peco is now and the
- 21:41Speaker 1: way that Bes is going on his trajectory. You know,
- 21:44Speaker 1: we still have like five hundred races left on this season,
- 21:47Speaker 1: so there's like a million points up for grabs. Can
- 21:50Speaker 1: Bes be a serious threat here to Peco and take
- 21:52Speaker 1: him over for third in the World Championship this year
- 21:55Speaker 1: Keith two.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Twenty nine Verses two thirty seven. I'm certain, absolute yes,
- 22:02Speaker 3: he's right in the zone. And once he gets a
- 22:04Speaker 3: sniff of I mean, that's the other thing, and it
- 22:05Speaker 3: they're like bloody sharks want to get a sniff a
- 22:07Speaker 3: bit of blood in the water, they're going to go
- 22:08Speaker 3: for it that little bit harder. It's worth fighting for.
- 22:11Speaker 3: I mean, third place second loser is used to be
- 22:13Speaker 3: the old saying, didn't it You know, it's one of
- 22:15Speaker 3: those situations where as a championship, you don't care if
- 22:18Speaker 3: you finished second. You don't care if you finish third. Well,
- 22:20Speaker 3: actually you do, particularly when it comes to bonuses. You
- 22:22Speaker 3: get paid big money for these things as well. I
- 22:24Speaker 3: don't forget about the money. I almost didn't overlook that.
- 22:27Speaker 3: You know, GP is a massive earning potential there and
- 22:30Speaker 3: bonuses from sponsors and backers and factories and the like.
- 22:35Speaker 3: It's one of those things where can you imagine the
- 22:37Speaker 3: bonuses that Mark's on.
- 22:38Speaker 4: At the minute.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I mean he would have been paid massive money anybody.
- 22:43Speaker 3: I mean, you mentioned the money earlier on Matt You've
- 22:44Speaker 3: got me at it now.
- 22:45Speaker 4: And the fact of the matter.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Is is that the bonuses for first and seconds throughout
- 22:49Speaker 3: the year just must be bloody huge. He's not gonna
- 22:53Speaker 3: have any trouble with house cleaners for the rest of
- 22:55Speaker 3: his life, is he mark markers you.
- 22:58Speaker 4: I'm going to have to have his mum rather anymore.
- 23:01Speaker 5: No, the fuel budget for the private jets nicely sorted
- 23:04Speaker 5: for the next eighteen months. But the thing you were talking.
- 23:06Speaker 4: About before, Reni, he knows about that.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Well, yeah, we've got some stories, probably not for this
- 23:12Speaker 5: podcast that we should probably get into with that. But
- 23:15Speaker 5: the thing you just mentioned then, Realija about Buzeki finishing
- 23:17Speaker 5: in front of Banyai I reckon. The other factor to
- 23:19Speaker 5: put in here is that normally when motor GP gets
- 23:23Speaker 5: on a plane and goes off to do the flyaways,
- 23:25Speaker 5: that's normally when a Prillier season just goes downhill. In
- 23:28Speaker 5: the past that you remember the Alasia Spargaro championship push
- 23:31Speaker 5: and I use air quotes on that because it was
- 23:33Speaker 5: mathematically there, but it wasn't really happening. Whenever they'd go
- 23:36Speaker 5: and do the flyways. A Prillia would just sink like
- 23:38Speaker 5: a stone the last few years and it hasn't happened.
- 23:40Speaker 5: And going back to something I was saying before, it
- 23:42Speaker 5: feels like they've got momentum and management and riders in
- 23:46Speaker 5: a good spot at the moment that I don't think
- 23:48Speaker 5: they're going to turne up at Motigi and then go
- 23:50Speaker 5: to Mandalika and Philip Island and just be oh, yeah,
- 23:52Speaker 5: there was an aprillier on the grid. I don't think
- 23:54Speaker 5: we're going to forget that like we've done in previous years.
- 23:56Speaker 5: I reckon, it's sustainable. I don't even think that Bazeki's
- 23:59Speaker 5: going to finish in the World Championship. I think he'll
- 24:01Speaker 5: be well in front of Banyai by the end of
- 24:03Speaker 5: the year, given that we've still got six rounds to
- 24:06Speaker 5: go and he's outscoring him by about fifteen points around
- 24:09Speaker 5: at the moment, So he might finish. Yeah, he might
- 24:11Speaker 5: finish fifty sixty points ahead a Pecko at this stage,
- 24:13Speaker 5: you'd reckon.
- 24:16Speaker 4: I've just been looking at my sheet again.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I know I can't believe I've done prep but thirteenth, fourteenth,
- 24:21Speaker 3: thirteenth in the last three Grand Prix for bang Naya,
- 24:26Speaker 3: you know, twenty first in a sprint, fifteenth in a sprint.
- 24:29Speaker 3: I mean he is habit. Can you imagine the state
- 24:32Speaker 3: of affairs when he gets back. I mean they don't
- 24:34Speaker 3: have motoromes nowadays, have these little hospitality units out there,
- 24:37Speaker 3: but get him back in there. Hotel rooms are the
- 24:41Speaker 3: loneliest places in the world when you any of us,
- 24:45Speaker 3: I mean you guys particularly, have to travel quite a
- 24:47Speaker 3: lot from from your side of the world to outside
- 24:49Speaker 3: of the world more often than not, and sitting in
- 24:51Speaker 3: a hotel room when you're having a bad weekend when
- 24:54Speaker 3: you've you know, for us, it's whether we drop a
- 24:57Speaker 3: few words wrong, or say something wrong, or don't comb
- 24:59Speaker 3: her hair in the right direction.
- 25:00Speaker 4: In my case, I've got a thing about right here
- 25:03Speaker 4: now it's going.
- 25:06Speaker 3: But the point being is he sat in a hotel room,
- 25:09Speaker 3: and they are the loneliest, most depressing places, and it
- 25:12Speaker 3: compounds your feeling of absolute dread.
- 25:16Speaker 4: I mean, you can't sleep at.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Night, the bloody air CON's too cold, the air CON's
- 25:21Speaker 3: too hot, the next room is doing what they shouldn't.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Be doing at that time of night.
- 25:25Speaker 3: You know, you've put you in the front of a
- 25:28Speaker 3: bloody hotel instead of the back of the hotel where
- 25:31Speaker 3: you're staying, and it's noisy. Every single little nuance gets
- 25:35Speaker 3: on your tits when you're having a time like Peco's
- 25:39Speaker 3: having at the moment, and back to you ran earlier on.
- 25:43Speaker 4: How does he get around that? Where does he go
- 25:45Speaker 4: from there?
- 25:46Speaker 3: He's an intelligent man, so therefore he's going to have
- 25:49Speaker 3: to use that. He's going to have to step back
- 25:51Speaker 3: a little bit. Although you can't see him steping back
- 25:53Speaker 3: much further than ease in the minute on the grid.
- 25:55Speaker 3: But it's a situation where he has got to work
- 25:57Speaker 3: this out in the last six Grand Prix because otherwise
- 26:00Speaker 3: he's going to go into the winter dreading the new year.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I mean, okay, it'll be a bit of testing, but
- 26:06Speaker 3: it's not We don't get the amount of testing. We
- 26:08Speaker 3: don't get the amount of track time on a motorbike
- 26:10Speaker 3: nowadays that you used to get. You could go testing
- 26:12Speaker 3: forever once upon a time, throw tires and money and
- 26:15Speaker 3: tracks at it.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Now you don't.
- 26:17Speaker 3: You get very little testing in a new year for
- 26:20Speaker 3: the for the bikes that may have some modifications next year.
- 26:23Speaker 3: And I just see if he goes into the winter
- 26:25Speaker 3: break with a similar mindset or a similar performance levels
- 26:30Speaker 3: where he's out at the moment, twenty twenty six is
- 26:33Speaker 3: going to seem like a very very tough year for me.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Night I'm already like you're ready, and hey, it's it's
- 26:41Speaker 1: the weirdest thing watching it as a fan and a
- 26:44Speaker 1: spectator and you're sitting on the sofa and you just
- 26:46Speaker 1: see the pain that Peckers in, the emotional, the mental,
- 26:50Speaker 1: and the spiritual pain, and it just seems.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So unlike him.
- 26:53Speaker 1: But ultimately, if you look at it from like the
- 26:56Speaker 1: wo wo side of things, it's like, Okay, he can
- 26:58Speaker 1: come out stronger. Look at what Mark had to overcome,
- 27:00Speaker 1: Look at what Joge Martin's I've had to overcome. And
- 27:03Speaker 1: I guess kind of segues me into my next thing is.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Look at Yamaha.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Look at what they've done, totally out.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Of character for them.
- 27:10Speaker 1: They've now bought a V four and we got to
- 27:12Speaker 1: see it this weekend with a Gusto Fernandez on track.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I thought it was funny in the build up beforehand,
- 27:19Speaker 1: Alex Rinn saying, oh, imagine if this V for is
- 27:22Speaker 1: faster than our inline fauce, it wasn't, but you could
- 27:27Speaker 1: see that they're still having a lot of teething problems.
- 27:30Speaker 1: But like I want to reiterate the fact that it's
- 27:32Speaker 1: so unlike Yamaha to go and do something like this.
- 27:35Speaker 1: You know, they've bought on a European European people more
- 27:41Speaker 1: into it and instead of it just being straight from
- 27:43Speaker 1: the factory in Japan, right, they're really trying to make
- 27:45Speaker 1: these changes, whether that is to just keep Fabriquartero happy
- 27:50Speaker 1: because Matt has said it a lot of times that
- 27:52Speaker 1: you know he thinks Fabriquadro is like the second best
- 27:55Speaker 1: on the grid and there's no denying that, or Yamaha
- 27:59Speaker 1: are really throwing every dollar, every cent, every tool, everything
- 28:03Speaker 1: at this Keith. From an ext rider's point of view,
- 28:07Speaker 1: we did see a lot of teething problems weekend. But
- 28:10Speaker 1: what's your initial thoughts on this V four?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Are they heading in the right direction at least?
- 28:14Speaker 1: Because it's been mixed signals from the Yamaha field.
- 28:18Speaker 3: I'm really glad you've given us some time on this
- 28:21Speaker 3: because it needs time and consideration.
- 28:23Speaker 4: To think about it.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Let me make a comparison with Suzuki when they came back.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I know that that Yamaha have been there all the time,
- 28:29Speaker 3: but a fundamental change from an in line four to
- 28:31Speaker 3: two a V four is a massive engineering task, a
- 28:36Speaker 3: massive amount of data gain. No test rider is ever
- 28:40Speaker 3: going to be like your mainline riders as far as
- 28:42Speaker 3: giving information is concerned, So we need the top guys
- 28:46Speaker 3: on the bike now. I I wondered whether Yamaha and
- 28:51Speaker 3: I've speculated with this in various pods earlier on in
- 28:54Speaker 3: the year, at the end of last year, rather whether
- 28:56Speaker 3: Yamaha was even in a situation where they.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Might pull out of the deal.
- 29:00Speaker 3: You know, Suzuki capitulated on their five year bloodymotorgp deal
- 29:03Speaker 3: that they'd only just signed and pulled out. You've got
- 29:06Speaker 3: KTM that have got financial difficulties. That almost meant that
- 29:09Speaker 3: there was going to be no KTM anymore unless somebody
- 29:11Speaker 3: like BMW took them over.
- 29:12Speaker 4: If you remember we're talking about it.
- 29:14Speaker 3: BMW haven't come into murder GP like was rumored at
- 29:16Speaker 3: some stage. Kalz actually have been long out of it.
- 29:18Speaker 3: This is a massively expensive sport, not compared with Formula one,
- 29:22Speaker 3: of course, but but compared with our own marketplace and
- 29:25Speaker 3: our own amount of money that there.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Is in the pot globally. I wonder whether Yamaha.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Were just going to go okay, we've been great for
- 29:32Speaker 3: a great number of years. Thank you very much, Dawna,
- 29:35Speaker 3: shake hands and be done with instead.
- 29:38Speaker 4: Exactly what you said.
- 29:39Speaker 3: They're trying the kitchen sink at it and to develop parallel.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Don't forget that they're only a small team. These teams
- 29:46Speaker 3: are not big, They're not huge like you. Even Honda
- 29:48Speaker 3: are quite a small operation from a racing HRC on
- 29:52Speaker 3: the racing corporation. They're very very small groups of people
- 29:55Speaker 3: that are engineering these things into a motorbike that was
- 29:59Speaker 3: only a little bit off the pace. We're talking about.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Vfax gearing was all wrong, everything was different. Augusta Fernandez
- 30:05Speaker 3: prehaps wouldn't have been quite on the pace.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Anyway. If you put couateuro and it's scored points in
- 30:09Speaker 4: its firstay out in for God's sake, that can't be bout.
- 30:11Speaker 4: I know a lot of people who were out of
- 30:12Speaker 4: the race at the end of the day, but it's
- 30:14Speaker 4: scored points, and that is the crux for me. I
- 30:18Speaker 4: always get there in the end. Mat You'll get used
- 30:19Speaker 4: to me waffling on.
- 30:21Speaker 3: It's in line four. You know it takes up too
- 30:24Speaker 3: much bloody room across the chassis. A V four gives
- 30:27Speaker 3: you a load of more options as to what you
- 30:29Speaker 3: can do with arrow, what you can do with you know,
- 30:32Speaker 3: so many different things. And looking forward to twenty twenty seven,
- 30:36Speaker 3: developing a V four through twenty twenty six is.
- 30:38Speaker 4: The smartest of moves.
- 30:39Speaker 3: By Yama, I mean Lynja Harvis being moved out the
- 30:43Speaker 3: way you mentioned having a few more euros in there
- 30:45Speaker 3: to look after. I mean as in people not in money,
- 30:48Speaker 3: looking after the team.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Great move.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Honda went that way. Honda, you know you wouldn't see, yeah,
- 30:54Speaker 3: you will look in at Honda garage. It would be
- 30:56Speaker 3: full of Japanese personnel, you know, but now you know
- 30:59Speaker 3: you've got a lot more euro influence in there, you know.
- 31:01Speaker 3: I think it was Jucatti through their clever maneuvering around
- 31:06Speaker 3: what is a very thin rule book compared with Formula
- 31:09Speaker 3: one for instance.
- 31:09Speaker 4: You know, our rule book is quite thin.
- 31:12Speaker 3: It's kind of one that you can maneuver through and
- 31:14Speaker 3: come up with some really good ideas. And of course
- 31:17Speaker 3: you've got bloody Gigi Delinia from Jucati and his team
- 31:20Speaker 3: working away, and they bought a motorbike that never turned,
- 31:24Speaker 3: you know, and didn't do what it wanted to do
- 31:25Speaker 3: to where it is now and across the ball. Quite
- 31:29Speaker 3: often you see half a dozen du cates in the
- 31:30Speaker 3: first six on a race or in a qualifying.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Session, and I think Yamaha have got the ball by
- 31:35Speaker 4: the horns.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Massive big up to Yamaha, what they've done, what they've achieved,
- 31:40Speaker 3: and that before I think, you know, you can see
- 31:42Speaker 3: a bit of backslapping going on in the pit garage
- 31:45Speaker 3: to punters on the side of the fence that wanted
- 31:47Speaker 3: to be instantaneously on the pipe. It can't be, you know,
- 31:50Speaker 3: technically nowadays to be within a second, to be around
- 31:53Speaker 3: a second off the fastest motor GP by first race out.
- 31:58Speaker 3: And if you remember, if I go back to Sazuzo again, Matt,
- 32:01Speaker 3: sorry for yakin on Suzuki when they all they did
- 32:05Speaker 3: was blow up at Valencia, if you remember, that's right. So,
- 32:10Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's a great achievement when Yamaha
- 32:13Speaker 3: have done, and I think that they deserve the accolades
- 32:15Speaker 3: that they haven't got yet.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Well, what was interesting for me is that, you know
- 32:21Speaker 5: the way that the Japanese factories tend to operate and
- 32:23Speaker 5: they tend to be risk averse, and it's all about
- 32:26Speaker 5: brand reputation and not damaging the brand and making sure
- 32:29Speaker 5: things don't have failures in the public eye when they're
- 32:31Speaker 5: still quite new. The fact they brought this thing in
- 32:34Speaker 5: earlier than anticipated and within a season to me is yeah,
- 32:39Speaker 5: it's great to have some performance and test this thing
- 32:41Speaker 5: in the you know, the racing laboratory.
- 32:43Speaker 4: If you like.
- 32:43Speaker 5: But it's a sign of intent for Kwasharero because the
- 32:46Speaker 5: thing that Yamaha's got right now, if you're one of
- 32:49Speaker 5: these five factories, the first box you need to tick
- 32:52Speaker 5: is do we have an absolute a grader for when
- 32:55Speaker 5: the bike is good? You Cadi's got theirs Aprillia when
- 32:59Speaker 5: he gets himself one hundred percent right and he's had
- 33:02Speaker 5: a proper preseason. Martine is proof of concept. He's won
- 33:04Speaker 5: the world championship, so he should be THEIRS, and Katm's
- 33:07Speaker 5: got Costa, So Yamahara at the moment have got a
- 33:10Speaker 5: guy that's a proven world champion who incredibly hasn't won
- 33:13Speaker 5: a race for over three years now. But if you
- 33:16Speaker 5: get the bike right, you don't have that question of, well,
- 33:19Speaker 5: do we have the rider for the bike at the moment,
- 33:21Speaker 5: they've got the rider but not the bike. But at
- 33:23Speaker 5: least you've got the rider. So to bring this V
- 33:26Speaker 5: four project in when maybe it's a little bit undercooked
- 33:28Speaker 5: at the moment, is a signal of intent to quash
- 33:30Speaker 5: a row. It's like, no, no, we're doing everything possible here.
- 33:34Speaker 5: Stick with us. Stick with us, because if they get
- 33:36Speaker 5: that bike right, he's already proved that he could win
- 33:38Speaker 5: a world championship. And if they can get the bike right,
- 33:41Speaker 5: they know they've got that asset there. So as much
- 33:43Speaker 5: as anything else, it's a signal of intent, like, look,
- 33:45Speaker 5: we're doing everything that you want us to do to
- 33:48Speaker 5: get you back to where you want to be. Please
- 33:51Speaker 5: don't go and run off to anybody else and look
- 33:53Speaker 5: at anybody else, because we're doing all we can to
- 33:55Speaker 5: keep you within our stable. I thought that was the
- 33:58Speaker 5: main reason that they did it, to be honest.
- 34:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think that.
- 34:03Speaker 3: I don't know whether for me, I don't think it'd
- 34:04Speaker 3: probably been the main reason, because you know, like at
- 34:07Speaker 3: the end of the day, they paid him what twenty
- 34:09Speaker 3: million bucks or whatever it was to have him in
- 34:11Speaker 3: the first place. But it's it comes back to what
- 34:13Speaker 3: we were talking about earlier. It's north of the eyebrows
- 34:15Speaker 3: is keeping him focused on the job. And I think
- 34:17Speaker 3: you're right in that they needed to be showing intent
- 34:20Speaker 3: and the trouble you've got. I mean, I've said this
- 34:23Speaker 3: so many times in the past. I'm against the homologation.
- 34:27Speaker 3: The way they homologate, you know, bikes for the next year.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Noise the hell out. I mean, how we get to
- 34:32Speaker 3: the first round and whatever that will be, and that's
- 34:35Speaker 3: the bike that you've got to run. It's a molligate
- 34:37Speaker 3: for the rest of the year. I've always said that
- 34:39Speaker 3: it should be four or five Grand Prix in before
- 34:41Speaker 3: the inmoligation is set. They should be allowed to run
- 34:44Speaker 3: what they've brung in the early Grand Prix to test
- 34:47Speaker 3: in race conditions, not in test conditions. Now, even this
- 34:50Speaker 3: week when we were looking on Monday for to know
- 34:54Speaker 3: what one thing I used to like to do after
- 34:57Speaker 3: I'd had a whole weekend, you've been on it.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Thursday.
- 35:00Speaker 3: We are Friday testing, Saturday qualifying and racing.
- 35:03Speaker 4: Nowadays Sunday. By the time you've got.
- 35:05Speaker 3: The Sunday night, you are absolutely hanging your naked and
- 35:10Speaker 3: the thought of laying in bed for a couple of
- 35:12Speaker 3: hours and the having to get up and do three
- 35:13Speaker 3: hundred bloody laps of testing on a Monday would drive
- 35:16Speaker 3: me insane.
- 35:17Speaker 4: But here they are again working on a Monday.
- 35:20Speaker 3: But the problem with that as well being the reason
- 35:22Speaker 3: I bring it up is because the conditions change, you
- 35:25Speaker 3: can't do back to back. You know, they had a
- 35:27Speaker 3: load of rain overnight on the Sunday night, so the
- 35:29Speaker 3: track's completely different on Monday, so you haven't got that comparators.
- 35:33Speaker 4: That's why I think that developing.
- 35:35Speaker 3: A motorbike in those early races, I've always thought that
- 35:39Speaker 3: they should have a situation where the molligation is not
- 35:41Speaker 3: set until round five or something, so they've got the
- 35:44Speaker 3: opportunity to run your test bikes, run your new new
- 35:47Speaker 3: machinery through proper racing conditions with the as you said earlier,
- 35:53Speaker 3: mac A grade riders on them, and then you know
- 35:56Speaker 3: where you are. And then the molligation gets set, then
- 35:59Speaker 3: it's banged. Everybody goes through it well.
- 36:01Speaker 5: And then adding to that you look at the way
- 36:03Speaker 5: the calendar is these days. That makes almost too much sense, Keith,
- 36:06Speaker 5: and that you should be running things here because you
- 36:08Speaker 5: think where do we go for the first four rounds.
- 36:10Speaker 5: We're in Thailand, we're in Argentina when that's on, we're
- 36:12Speaker 5: in America, we're in Or, we're in Qatar, all over
- 36:15Speaker 5: the place. Maybe the home alligation point is once we
- 36:17Speaker 5: get back to her Reth, when Europe starts. So that's
- 36:20Speaker 5: about round five, round six. Maybe that's the point you go,
- 36:23Speaker 5: all right, that's when we'll hemeligate things. You can go
- 36:25Speaker 5: off and do your first batch of flyways and then
- 36:27Speaker 5: we'll rule a line under it, and you do it.
- 36:29Speaker 5: Then I agree with you. It doesn't make sense that
- 36:31Speaker 5: it's as early as it is.
- 36:34Speaker 3: I think that there used to be an old phrase.
- 36:35Speaker 3: I don't know whose phrase it was, but mostly Julian Ryder,
- 36:38Speaker 3: who taught me more things than I ought to have
- 36:40Speaker 3: been taught by him. But Julian Rider used to say
- 36:42Speaker 3: it's the beginning of the used to say it's the
- 36:44Speaker 3: beginning of the ground war.
- 36:46Speaker 4: When you get to back to.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Europe, and that's when the real slug starts. That's when
- 36:50Speaker 3: everybody's right on it. Wrath is traditionally the place where
- 36:53Speaker 3: it all really really kicks off.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Yeah, God, I miss that harass.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Just curious on your thoughts on this through Keith, because
- 37:03Speaker 1: we spoke about it on Me and Matt spoke about
- 37:06Speaker 1: it a lot. The fact that Jack Miller is now
- 37:07Speaker 1: saying his experience what he can bring to the table.
- 37:11Speaker 2: What was that face for.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Well, everybody's talking about Jack Miller at the moment. I
- 37:17Speaker 3: just I just had an auty mate of mine who
- 37:19Speaker 3: sadly just passed away. But I mean we were always
- 37:22Speaker 3: in his bar in Thailand. We were always on about
- 37:24Speaker 3: Jack Miller all the time. Because with big Jack Miller fans.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I'm a big Jack Miller fan.
- 37:28Speaker 4: I like Jack.
- 37:29Speaker 3: I like his mum and dad, you know, like a
- 37:32Speaker 3: paddock without Jack Miller, and it would be a travesty
- 37:34Speaker 3: for me.
- 37:35Speaker 4: But he has had a torrid time. You know, it's
- 37:37Speaker 4: not been easy for Jack. I think I love the
- 37:40Speaker 4: way you dealt with it. Look, you either want me
- 37:42Speaker 4: or you don't want me. I love that. That is
- 37:44Speaker 4: a proper Rossie way. Yeah.
- 37:46Speaker 3: In this in this era of pussy footing around and
- 37:49Speaker 3: being ever some politically correct and gentle, Jackson comes out
- 37:53Speaker 3: and come on, either Simon or tell me to piss
- 37:55Speaker 3: off one or the other. Don't be about And of
- 37:59Speaker 3: course they sign him, and I.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Think he's an asset.
- 38:01Speaker 3: He knows how to ride a motorbike, you know, and
- 38:05Speaker 3: if you want to develop a motorbike, you need someone
- 38:07Speaker 3: who's going to be gritty, who's going to be down
- 38:10Speaker 3: to earth, to get stuck in on it.
- 38:12Speaker 4: And I think Jack is still an asset. There'll be
- 38:15Speaker 4: a few that disagree with that, but.
- 38:17Speaker 3: It's I'm glad to see that he's got that opportunity
- 38:21Speaker 3: to move forward, and I think my whole benefit from him.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Well.
- 38:25Speaker 5: The key thing for me too, Keith, is that you
- 38:26Speaker 5: look at their rider line up for next year. You've
- 38:28Speaker 5: got Alex Ridens did half a season on a V
- 38:30Speaker 5: four at Honda before he smashed himself up when he
- 38:32Speaker 5: was riding for Luccio in twenty three. Quaaterero has never
- 38:36Speaker 5: ridden a V four and top racks of rookie. So
- 38:39Speaker 5: having someone in that four rider lineup, you know, Jack's
- 38:42Speaker 5: done every season besides the current one on V four's
- 38:45Speaker 5: for three different manufacturers. It was an absolute no brainer
- 38:48Speaker 5: to keep him based on that, if not what he's
- 38:50Speaker 5: done on track this year, because on track it's not
- 38:52Speaker 5: been great, let's be honest, but you look at the
- 38:55Speaker 5: CV that he's had and where he's been the fact
- 38:57Speaker 5: that he can bring the best out of these three
- 38:59Speaker 5: other places that he's been too, where they've written V
- 39:01Speaker 5: four's is more valuable than anything you'll do at a
- 39:03Speaker 5: Sunday i'd reckon.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 39:09Speaker 3: I mean, I think that, like I said, Jack Miller
- 39:11Speaker 3: is an asset to the team and for those reasons
- 39:13Speaker 3: you've given. It's interesting that you mentioned Alex Rinden Coo.
- 39:18Speaker 3: I mean, I always like to have a bit of
- 39:20Speaker 3: a mention if I can with Joan mir I mean,
- 39:22Speaker 3: I have never known a rider throw himself at the
- 39:26Speaker 3: floor so consistently often. Honda obviously rented the former world champions.
- 39:32Speaker 3: It's hard to remember he was a world champion, for
- 39:34Speaker 3: God's sake.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And the commitment that he's showing to Honda and that
- 39:40Speaker 4: they appear to be showing back.
- 39:41Speaker 3: I mean, Honda surely deserve a break at some stage,
- 39:46Speaker 3: but I don't know. I mean, I think the other
- 39:49Speaker 3: problem you've got is that there's a log jam of talent.
- 39:53Speaker 3: You look behind these guys now that are all lining
- 39:56Speaker 3: up in Moto three, Moto Moto two, and beyond this
- 40:00Speaker 3: ev or whatever it might be that that that's bringing
- 40:02Speaker 3: on some of these young riders. You know we talk
- 40:04Speaker 3: about Aldi gear, aldigear was going to be the next
- 40:06Speaker 3: best thing. Well he's still right there, a Costa. You know,
- 40:09Speaker 3: he's yet to peak in my view. Okay, all those
- 40:12Speaker 3: troubles at KTM, that's got to have filtered down the
- 40:14Speaker 3: line to the race team. You know, everyone wondering whether
- 40:17Speaker 3: they're going to have jobs, everyone wondering, you know, everyone
- 40:19Speaker 3: looking to the side, where can I go with this lot?
- 40:22Speaker 4: You know ends up going fits up.
- 40:26Speaker 3: So it's kind of one of those ones where there's
- 40:29Speaker 3: a there's a lot of stuff going on in the
- 40:30Speaker 3: background that the riders and management are looking at that
- 40:34Speaker 3: affects the overall riding. I think so people like Joe Amir,
- 40:38Speaker 3: Who's Who's Who's Who's still I've never never seen commitment
- 40:42Speaker 3: like it for throwing himself at the fence. I mean,
- 40:45Speaker 3: the guy can't get a break even when he even
- 40:47Speaker 3: when he doesn't throw himself at the fence, someone else him.
- 40:51Speaker 1: So true, Yeah, he's definitely already won that the most
- 40:54Speaker 1: crashes or the most takeouts this season, hasn't he? But
- 40:58Speaker 1: I'm glad you brought up a Costa there, and I
- 40:59Speaker 1: know you've got the euro Costas shirt on for those
- 41:01Speaker 1: who are listening to the audio for this piece the
- 41:04Speaker 1: big Costa fan. But Matt, we got a little bit
- 41:08Speaker 1: of knowledge on the whole chain incident, didn't we regarding
- 41:11Speaker 1: the KTMS because it happened to Brad during Friday and
- 41:15Speaker 1: Saturday and then obviously Sunday on the main Grand Prix
- 41:18Speaker 1: we saw the Marshall running onto the track to pick
- 41:21Speaker 1: up the part of the broken chain.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Can you fill our listeners in on what was to
- 41:24Speaker 2: go with that?
- 41:25Speaker 5: Well, you're selling yourself short here because the information that
- 41:28Speaker 5: I received was from you, because you had someone in
- 41:31Speaker 5: the in the other is Prilier that gave you the
- 41:34Speaker 5: load out of what was going on. So you need
- 41:36Speaker 5: to scroll back through your WhatsApp and actually tell them
- 41:39Speaker 5: this is what you told me. But I mean the
- 41:41Speaker 5: long story short is that there was a it's part
- 41:44Speaker 5: of the body work right that they were using if
- 41:48Speaker 5: I remember this correctly, on Monday at the test, they
- 41:51Speaker 5: were almost using like a guard to stop the chain
- 41:54Speaker 5: from being rubbed against the chassis when the bike is
- 41:58Speaker 5: squatted down when the rear ride high ice is engaged
- 42:01Speaker 5: and you look at where the apprilliate where the kt
- 42:04Speaker 5: was shedding its chain at Massa because it happened a
- 42:06Speaker 5: couple of times to Binder as well. It was coming
- 42:08Speaker 5: out of corner numbers in my head turn six, I
- 42:11Speaker 5: reckon it is where it's the back straight effectively where
- 42:15Speaker 5: they start the back straight on the curbs on the outside.
- 42:18Speaker 5: So the bikes squatted down on the curbs, which is
- 42:20Speaker 5: useful because I've just squtted down on an audio podcast.
- 42:23Speaker 5: The bike squatted down on the curbs and the chassis
- 42:26Speaker 5: is rubbing against the chain while the bike's got its
- 42:28Speaker 5: rear ride height device engaged over some curves as it
- 42:30Speaker 5: heads down the back straight, and that was what was
- 42:32Speaker 5: dislodging the chain. Have I got that right?
- 42:36Speaker 1: Look, I'm fairly sure, but I've never ridden a red
- 42:38Speaker 1: a GP bike.
- 42:39Speaker 2: So Keith, does that sound? Does that sound to you?
- 42:43Speaker 4: Well?
- 42:43Speaker 3: It's funny because someone asked me and I think I
- 42:46Speaker 3: put it out on Twitter or x or whatever it's
- 42:47Speaker 3: called nowadays. You know, it's one of those situations where
- 42:52Speaker 3: with the right device doing what it's doing, and when
- 42:54Speaker 3: you've got the natural pumping that you're getting anyway through
- 42:57Speaker 3: a chain.
- 42:57Speaker 4: I mean, you consider how much a bloody motorbike chain.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Has to put up with nowadays, the amount of grief
- 43:02Speaker 3: it's getting from from both engine breaking and just horsepower poking,
- 43:07Speaker 3: and also the geometry of real suspension and the light,
- 43:11Speaker 3: the way the motorbike is really live at the back
- 43:13Speaker 3: as well. You know, if you haven't got that geometry
- 43:15Speaker 3: absolutely bang on, you might get a bit of a
- 43:17Speaker 3: stretching situation in places and then in other places, which
- 43:19Speaker 3: is I think where you're going, Matt, is that you know,
- 43:22Speaker 3: the chain.
- 43:22Speaker 4: Gets a little bit loose.
- 43:23Speaker 3: So if you've got a situation where it's being pushed
- 43:26Speaker 3: out a line, then pop off it comes. But I
- 43:30Speaker 3: mean it's something that geometry wise, I would have to
- 43:32Speaker 3: get worked out. I mean roll on the days where
- 43:34Speaker 3: we don't have a bloody ride height situation.
- 43:36Speaker 4: I mean, these bikes shouldn't be bloody drag bikes. The
- 43:38Speaker 4: should be proper motorbikes.
- 43:40Speaker 3: I mean bloody ride heyes, And again it comes back
- 43:42Speaker 3: to my rule book that I said earlier on because
- 43:44Speaker 3: the bloody rule books are thin. Everybody's got away with
- 43:46Speaker 3: everything they shouldn't have got away with. And I always
- 43:49Speaker 3: remember Mike Trimby God rested Mike Trimba, original CEO of
- 43:54Speaker 3: the International Race Teams, Association.
- 43:56Speaker 4: I mean I always used to sit in.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Mike's office with him grumbling over someone's found a way
- 43:59Speaker 3: around the rule book for this, and found them away
- 44:01Speaker 3: around the rulebook for that.
- 44:02Speaker 4: When seenless gearbox, it's first game a thing.
- 44:05Speaker 3: I remember Mike saying, if we've seen that coming, they
- 44:07Speaker 3: wouldn't have come because at the time, the cost involved
- 44:11Speaker 3: in making a sceneless gearbox the first one that came out.
- 44:13Speaker 4: I mean, it's like swist watch.
- 44:14Speaker 3: I can't even bloody say it, let alone bloody make one.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Swiss watch manufacturing. I mean it's hugely expensive.
- 44:23Speaker 3: I mean, now we've got seamless up and seen us
- 44:25Speaker 3: all the way down through the gearbox as well. Fantastic,
- 44:28Speaker 3: And that might work on a road bike. You might
- 44:31Speaker 3: think that that's something development wise can go to a
- 44:33Speaker 3: road bike, so therefore there might be some point to it.
- 44:36Speaker 3: But a bloody ride eye adjuster, I mean, just you're
- 44:39Speaker 3: never going to need that on a roadbike as long
- 44:41Speaker 3: as we go. But then there's the other argument. This
- 44:43Speaker 3: is a prototype series, so therefore, you know, it's quite
- 44:47Speaker 3: nice to see all these really really radical ways around things,
- 44:50Speaker 3: but we've got to live in the real world. It's
- 44:53Speaker 3: all a massive cost. Arrow arow should never have been
- 44:55Speaker 3: allowed to get to where it's got to, you know
- 44:57Speaker 3: it should that should have been bloody blanked out a
- 44:59Speaker 3: long time.
- 45:00Speaker 4: Me go again.
- 45:02Speaker 3: I'll go back to the NASCAR analogy if you like,
- 45:05Speaker 3: because I covered NaSTA for Sky for some time.
- 45:08Speaker 4: You know, those buggers, if they're a.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Millimeter out on their on their their shape and their
- 45:13Speaker 3: their form that it goes through, they get excluded straight away.
- 45:17Speaker 3: And we should have had something immediately like that. I
- 45:19Speaker 3: re remember Danny Aldridge, technical director, pushing this this like
- 45:24Speaker 3: frame thing through the paddock and because it looks like
- 45:28Speaker 3: something he's gonna hang, he's washing on.
- 45:29Speaker 4: I don't know anything else.
- 45:30Speaker 3: It literally was it right that they they got as
- 45:33Speaker 3: a form to push the bike into and if any
- 45:35Speaker 3: part of the the carbon fiber touched any of it,
- 45:39Speaker 3: then it wasn't allowable. And you just think to yourself,
- 45:43Speaker 3: Christ Almighty, if we come to that, I mean, like,
- 45:45Speaker 3: can't you write a rule that says no, you're not
- 45:48Speaker 3: allowed to do that unless we approve it. But slowly
- 45:51Speaker 3: but surely, the rule book's got a little thicker, a
- 45:53Speaker 3: little thicker, little thicker.
- 45:54Speaker 4: We don't want it to be like Formula one. What
- 45:57Speaker 4: do you think? I mean, what do you guys think?
- 45:58Speaker 3: I mean, it's a pro type series, so therefore development
- 46:02Speaker 3: should be allowed within the rule. But I mean, should
- 46:06Speaker 3: we have scene this coming? Should should right adjust as
- 46:09Speaker 3: an are open outlawed ages?
- 46:11Speaker 4: Ago?
- 46:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it's one of those things that once
- 46:13Speaker 5: the genie's out of the bottle, you can't stuff it
- 46:15Speaker 5: back in right. And that's you know. I went and
- 46:18Speaker 5: looked at some I was looking at some photos of
- 46:19Speaker 5: when Mark last wie the World Championship, preparing for the
- 46:22Speaker 5: inevitable World Championship story that I'm going to write. And
- 46:25Speaker 5: you look, because we see these bikes every week now,
- 46:27Speaker 5: we get numb to what they look like. Go and
- 46:29Speaker 5: look at a twenty nineteen Honda compared to what Mark's
- 46:32Speaker 5: writing this year, and it looks like a different sport.
- 46:35Speaker 5: It doesn't even look like the same series. It's the
- 46:37Speaker 5: same guy. It's like, what category is this? It doesn't
- 46:40Speaker 5: look like murder GP at all. Because we've got so
- 46:42Speaker 5: used to all this arrow and I don't know, Keith,
- 46:44Speaker 5: I always think with these things that you've got to
- 46:46Speaker 5: try and find the balance between technical innovation and encouraging
- 46:51Speaker 5: the intellectual brilliance of someone that's come up with something.
- 46:54Speaker 5: But then at the end of the day, we're in
- 46:55Speaker 5: the entertainment business, right, and so does it add anything
- 46:59Speaker 5: to the show and the entertainment spectacle If everyone's spending
- 47:04Speaker 5: an insane amount of money to come to the same
- 47:07Speaker 5: end in that everyone's got the same stuff, some will
- 47:09Speaker 5: have it better than others, and we're pouring heaps of
- 47:13Speaker 5: money on these things that, yeah, they make the bikes faster.
- 47:15Speaker 5: But if everyone's doing it, then are we adding to
- 47:17Speaker 5: the spectacle? That's the thing I always think with this
- 47:19Speaker 5: in that I don't think people go to racetracks to
- 47:21Speaker 5: watch Motor GP to look at timesheets necessarily so we'll
- 47:24Speaker 5: all be impressed. Oh there's another circuit record gone. There's
- 47:27Speaker 5: another circuit record gone. The spectators want to see good racing.
- 47:31Speaker 5: And if we're pouring a heap of money on stuff
- 47:33Speaker 5: that makes the bikes look different, but we're all spending
- 47:35Speaker 5: money in the same areas, does it add to the spectacle.
- 47:38Speaker 5: I guess you've got to try and find the balance
- 47:39Speaker 5: between innovation and entertainment, right.
- 47:44Speaker 4: I think what matter GP have done is a fantastic job.
- 47:47Speaker 3: I mean when in any time in the past have
- 47:51Speaker 3: we seen a field full of motorbike within one point
- 47:54Speaker 3: two seconds of each other. Yeah, and I think that's
- 47:57Speaker 3: the key. Over over all those different platforms and configurations.
- 48:01Speaker 3: We've got an entire field of twenty two to twenty
- 48:04Speaker 3: three if it's got a wild card out or something
- 48:07Speaker 3: within a second and a half, say, just to pick
- 48:10Speaker 3: up the stragglers at the back. It's incredible how close
- 48:13Speaker 3: it is considering that that has been done. But you're right,
- 48:17Speaker 3: innovation fantastic in a prototype series. But the cost, You're
- 48:21Speaker 3: right again, money GP cannot afford it. It's not Formula one.
- 48:25Speaker 3: And the biggest victim in all of this is the
- 48:29Speaker 3: opportunity to pass. I mean nothing pisses people off more
- 48:33Speaker 3: than seeing that clever little Spanish devil pulling him behind
- 48:37Speaker 3: the bike in front just to get the temperature and
- 48:39Speaker 3: his tire where he needs it to do.
- 48:41Speaker 4: I mean, that is just ruins the whole atmosphere of
- 48:46Speaker 4: a money GP.
- 48:46Speaker 3: What we want to see is twenty four laps or
- 48:49Speaker 3: whatever it might be, of everybody scrapping elbows in your
- 48:53Speaker 3: face and let's get on with it. I mean that's
- 48:55Speaker 3: but unfortunately, the more technically advanced, you get the more
- 48:58Speaker 3: difficult that becomes. Always remember Bradley Smith saying to me
- 49:01Speaker 3: Philip Island. Actually, you know, you get within you know,
- 49:06Speaker 3: a few yards of a bike with plenty of arrow
- 49:08Speaker 3: on it, and you can hardly bloody hold onto your bike.
- 49:10Speaker 3: It's all over the hockey, it's moving, it's been pushed
- 49:13Speaker 3: and pulled around so much. And at two hundred mile
- 49:15Speaker 3: an hour, suddenly you start to think two and a
- 49:18Speaker 3: mile an hour has become normal.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Now everybody thinks about hour.
- 49:21Speaker 3: We will say it with you know, impunity away We
- 49:24Speaker 3: always two one hundred and twenty five mile an hour
- 49:26Speaker 3: at Magello. Wow, that sounds pretty fast.
- 49:29Speaker 4: Bloody hell.
- 49:30Speaker 3: I've not ever been to a race track where you
- 49:32Speaker 3: see a motorbike go past you at two hundre mile
- 49:34Speaker 3: an hour. It is insane and then you've got to
- 49:37Speaker 3: get it stopped. It's incredible. And the arrow affects everybody
- 49:42Speaker 3: in the field and makes passing difficult. And I think
- 49:45Speaker 3: that that's that's the issue. From a spectator point of view.
- 49:48Speaker 5: It's so interesting, Keith. You just mentioned Philip Island then,
- 49:50Speaker 5: and it made me think of and Roonita. I'm going
- 49:52Speaker 5: to do this twenty fifteen. The race before Malaysia twenty
- 49:56Speaker 5: fifteen was Australia. We remember how that all kicked off
- 49:59Speaker 5: there that at Philip Island. I think there was something
- 50:01Speaker 5: like it was one hundred and something overtakes between Rossi,
- 50:05Speaker 5: Lorenzo Marquez and Andrea Ynoni once he'd killed the seagull
- 50:09Speaker 5: on the first lap or second lap or whatever it was.
- 50:11Speaker 5: And you go back and if you see the highlights
- 50:13Speaker 5: of that race, those bikes have no arrow on them,
- 50:16Speaker 5: and so you wonder, is a race like that now
- 50:20Speaker 5: possible with the bikes being the way they are with
- 50:23Speaker 5: all the arrow because passing is so hard. The great
- 50:26Speaker 5: thing about that particular race he had four guys with
- 50:29Speaker 5: very different stakes, in very different styles, but they are
- 50:32Speaker 5: able to pass and scrap and it's gone down as
- 50:34Speaker 5: one of the great races of the modern era of
- 50:37Speaker 5: motor GP. I don't know if you can have a
- 50:38Speaker 5: race like that anymore, because it is just so damn
- 50:40Speaker 5: hard to pass because you've got all this arrow hanging
- 50:43Speaker 5: off the side of these things.
- 50:46Speaker 4: It is an issue.
- 50:47Speaker 3: And I think also we've got to a situation where
- 50:49Speaker 3: everybody is on the limit. I mean, I'll make you
- 50:52Speaker 3: laugh with it. We'll go back to a Keith Huan
- 50:58Speaker 3: time of racing. British Grand Prix Silverston.
- 51:01Speaker 4: I'd got the two factory Kawazakis in the three P
- 51:04Speaker 4: fifty race, which would have been the equivalent of MOO
- 51:06Speaker 4: two back in the day, and I managed to pass
- 51:10Speaker 4: Anton Manguana race. I managed to pass you on Francois.
- 51:14Speaker 3: Bolde on the second factory Kawazaki, which was like twenty
- 51:17Speaker 3: or thirty mile an hour faster in a straight line
- 51:19Speaker 3: and anything else, and I passed him from about ten
- 51:22Speaker 3: yards behind. If I'd done that now, if anybody done
- 51:25Speaker 3: that now, or even given the opportunity to do that now,
- 51:28Speaker 3: they'd be on the moon. There is not a millimeter given.
- 51:32Speaker 3: I'm not bigging myself up. What I'm saying is back
- 51:35Speaker 3: in the day when it was like amateur.
- 51:38Speaker 4: Hour, in compared with where we are now, every single
- 51:41Speaker 4: rider is an athlete. Every single rider there's got his
- 51:45Speaker 4: hydration is physique. Everything is pinpoint focused to the absolute limit.
- 51:51Speaker 4: There isn't anything else. Nobody leaves anything on the table now.
- 51:54Speaker 4: We always talk about the good old day. It's a
- 51:55Speaker 4: good old days, buddy, el.
- 51:57Speaker 3: We'd have a fag before we went out and we'd
- 51:58Speaker 3: drink you know, plenty of pints the night before, and
- 52:01Speaker 3: that was at brand prex level you know nowadays.
- 52:04Speaker 4: Wayne Garner made mine Back in the day. I mean
- 52:06Speaker 4: Wayne and I.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Got pessed one day before the Snatterton It was what
- 52:10Speaker 3: would have been a British super Vit type series thing
- 52:12Speaker 3: and we had a massive night out before both he
- 52:15Speaker 3: and I went out to set times the next day.
- 52:17Speaker 4: If they breathalyzed us, we'd have been thrown out the track.
- 52:19Speaker 3: And it's kind of and that's how it was back
- 52:23Speaker 3: in the day, and we have moved forward and the
- 52:25Speaker 3: same thing goes with technicalities. They've moved forward to a
- 52:28Speaker 3: point now where we've gone to the end of this
- 52:30Speaker 3: alliot and everybody is right there. They're on the edge
- 52:33Speaker 3: of technology, they're on the edge of and nobody can.
- 52:37Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know what's going to bring us
- 52:38Speaker 3: back from that, and probably in my heart, I hope
- 52:40Speaker 3: it doesn't go back from that. I like the fact
- 52:43Speaker 3: that technically all of these brilliant brains are focusing on
- 52:47Speaker 3: getting their configuration, their particular platform into a position that
- 52:52Speaker 3: we're seeing not not the kind of racing that we
- 52:55Speaker 3: want to see it's gone a bit. I mean, aren't
- 52:58Speaker 3: going to get shot for this, and I'm sorry, but
- 53:00Speaker 3: it's gone a bit Formula one. You know, it's gone
- 53:04Speaker 3: a bit formula one. It's about technical more than anything else. Then,
- 53:07Speaker 3: But they can't pass unless you open the flat, you know,
- 53:10Speaker 3: for God's sake, you know, the only time they can go,
- 53:12Speaker 3: they've they've got to be given fifteen twenty mile an
- 53:14Speaker 3: hour more at the end of the strait to make
- 53:16Speaker 3: a pass.
- 53:16Speaker 4: Otherwise, Formula one.
- 53:17Speaker 3: You know, once you're in front, you're in front forever
- 53:20Speaker 3: because they can't pass each other without a bit of
- 53:23Speaker 3: artificial assistance. God forbid we should ever go down that road. Liberty,
- 53:28Speaker 3: Please don't do that to us.
- 53:29Speaker 4: But it's it's a really different It's a real conflict,
- 53:33Speaker 4: isn't it.
- 53:33Speaker 3: I don't know whether you feel the same way you guys,
- 53:35Speaker 3: but it's a real conflict because you want to see
- 53:37Speaker 3: this innovation, but the innovation has got us to a
- 53:39Speaker 3: point where the riders just can't quite get over the
- 53:42Speaker 3: fact that it's it's almost impossible to pass. Philip Island
- 53:45Speaker 3: is a track that gives you opportunities in places, and
- 53:49Speaker 3: you can be a bit greedy in places of Philip Islands.
- 53:51Speaker 3: You know you're up and downdown. You've got fast stuff,
- 53:53Speaker 3: you've got slape stuff. There's an opportunity there, So you know,
- 53:57Speaker 3: that's why we love Philip Island. And I mean, in
- 54:00Speaker 3: a rider in the world I've ever come across that
- 54:01Speaker 3: doesn't like being a Philip pylon.
- 54:05Speaker 4: And I don't know, I quite like the atmosphere of Philipilond.
- 54:09Speaker 3: I think that it's really old school. It's like going
- 54:12Speaker 3: back to the nineteen eighties. When you go to Philip Pyland.
- 54:14Speaker 4: You know, you got them.
- 54:15Speaker 3: Grizzled blokes with beards that look like they've been out
- 54:17Speaker 3: in the cold for like the last month.
- 54:20Speaker 4: You know, like their next job is to climb a
- 54:22Speaker 4: mountain somewhere. I don't know about watching motobile races.
- 54:26Speaker 3: This is a big group of really enthusiastic people that
- 54:28Speaker 3: look like they're going to rip your head off if
- 54:30Speaker 3: you lick their beer.
- 54:31Speaker 4: And I kind of like that old fashioned atmosphere Bona's areas.
- 54:35Speaker 4: I mean, if you went to Argentina, you used to
- 54:37Speaker 4: have a similar thing there. It was like nineteen eighties.
- 54:39Speaker 4: You know, you're eating dotgey steaks with maggots in it
- 54:42Speaker 4: and all the rest of it. It was a really weird
- 54:44Speaker 4: place to go to and it kind of moves away
- 54:48Speaker 4: from the I don't know, the modernized Grand Prix racing
- 54:52Speaker 4: that we seem to be having in some places nowadays.
- 54:56Speaker 2: I think my.
- 55:01Speaker 1: My takeaway from that, and it's something that we spoke
- 55:03Speaker 1: about on the OMG podcast when the rules came out.
- 55:06Speaker 1: It's something that me and might have spoken about a
- 55:07Speaker 1: lot on pittok is the fact that I think collectively
- 55:10Speaker 1: as a whole, we're all so excited for twenty twenty
- 55:13Speaker 1: seven for the new rules to come in to see
- 55:15Speaker 1: if we do get more of that overtaking, more of
- 55:17Speaker 1: that close old school racing like we used to have.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Because even though it is exciting and something that I
- 55:23Speaker 1: try and do with my social content is you know,
- 55:25Speaker 1: if you like the passing and you like that closest
- 55:28Speaker 1: checkout motor GP, because we have it, we don't have
- 55:30Speaker 1: it like we used to do. And even if I
- 55:32Speaker 1: talked to Chris about it, it's the same that he's saying.
- 55:34Speaker 2: It's not like it was.
- 55:36Speaker 1: But hopefully these small changes can bring it that back
- 55:40Speaker 1: to that while still improving getting the best of both worlds.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Well we got a tire change as well, don't we,
- 55:46Speaker 3: which I think is long over. Yeah, I mean again
- 55:49Speaker 3: you go back to the day. If we don't, if
- 55:51Speaker 3: we're talking about old school stuff, you'd have good year.
- 55:54Speaker 4: You'd have mentioned if you'd have done lot.
- 55:56Speaker 3: You know that you had three different then Bridgestone came
- 55:58Speaker 3: in on the scene as well, so you would have
- 56:00Speaker 3: different time manufacturers, which made a difference. You know, if
- 56:03Speaker 3: you go to the good old Kiwi kra Far when
- 56:05Speaker 3: he won the British Grand Prix at Donnington Park on Dunlops. Somehow,
- 56:09Speaker 3: Dunlops were always the best tire at Donington Park for
- 56:12Speaker 3: some strange reason, whereas Mitchelin would kick Dunlop's ass just
- 56:15Speaker 3: about everywhere else.
- 56:16Speaker 4: We don't have that anymore.
- 56:17Speaker 3: But I think we're not gonna have the same problems
- 56:19Speaker 3: with Perelli as we've had with Michelin's.
- 56:21Speaker 4: It used to be.
- 56:21Speaker 3: I always remember Colin Edwards telling me something on the lines.
- 56:25Speaker 3: I can't remember the exact way it went now, but Bridgestone,
- 56:27Speaker 3: you know, like you have to have faith with a
- 56:31Speaker 3: Bridgestone because whatever you thought you couldn't do with it,
- 56:34Speaker 3: you could you could. You know, you could trail break
- 56:36Speaker 3: in on a bridge stone the last minute, and it
- 56:38Speaker 3: was an incredible tire at the front end, but he
- 56:40Speaker 3: didn't have the grip at the back.
- 56:41Speaker 4: Michelin went the other way around.
- 56:42Speaker 3: You remember when they first tested, they crashed their brains
- 56:44Speaker 3: out a sappan when Michelin came on, because it was
- 56:47Speaker 3: more of a fifty to fifty balanced deal and none
- 56:49Speaker 3: of the bikes were set for that, so they were
- 56:50Speaker 3: all falling off on. But I think when we come
- 56:52Speaker 3: to Perelli, this tire situation where you know, you can
- 56:56Speaker 3: be half a degree out in tire temperature and it
- 56:58Speaker 3: put the transgress the rules, it's just a bloody nightmare,
- 57:02Speaker 3: you know.
- 57:02Speaker 4: It's it just shouldn't be like that.
- 57:04Speaker 3: And again it comes down to air row to a
- 57:05Speaker 3: certain extent, why we've got that problem as well. But
- 57:08Speaker 3: I don't think we're gonna have that problem with them
- 57:10Speaker 3: with Perelli, and we'll see agreed, right you too.
- 57:15Speaker 1: I feel like we've waffled on an awful lot about
- 57:19Speaker 1: Moto tps. Quickly, just touch on this lower categories, just
- 57:23Speaker 1: super quick. I was sitting on the edge of my
- 57:25Speaker 1: seat during that Moto three race.
- 57:27Speaker 2: I don't know about you guys. It's something that.
- 57:29Speaker 1: I preach on here. Listeners, just tune into Moto three
- 57:33Speaker 1: because you know, if you're wanting that overtaking in the
- 57:35Speaker 1: passing and the elbows out like we love in racing,
- 57:39Speaker 1: just watch it.
- 57:39Speaker 2: It is so worthwhile.
- 57:41Speaker 1: But we had two Aussies on the front row. Mat
- 57:45Speaker 1: Jacob finally got his front row start in Moto three.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Can you believe it?
- 57:50Speaker 2: About bloody time? Jacob?
- 57:52Speaker 5: Yeah, he needed it too, didn't he Because you remember
- 57:54Speaker 5: what happened a week before at Cashilonia. The last time
- 57:56Speaker 5: we saw Jacob, he was next to the next to
- 57:58Speaker 5: his bike on the side of the track after a
- 58:00Speaker 5: broken down and looking like a young bloke that's under
- 58:02Speaker 5: a lot of pressure to find himself a seat for
- 58:05Speaker 5: twenty twenty six, which is what he is. So to
- 58:08Speaker 5: bounce back and get himself on the front row. Race
- 58:10Speaker 5: didn't go so great, he faded to outside the top
- 58:13Speaker 5: ten at the end. But to see Joel with his
- 58:15Speaker 5: new deal for twenty six qualify on the front row
- 58:17Speaker 5: and he's just off the podium and forth. Jacob was
- 58:19Speaker 5: pretty strong throughout the weekend. Better weekend for both of them,
- 58:22Speaker 5: but yeah, particularly for Jacob because that was not great.
- 58:26Speaker 5: It was pretty confronting TV that previous week because you
- 58:29Speaker 5: can see how much pressure the young Blake's under, can't you.
- 58:32Speaker 2: Yes or yes?
- 58:34Speaker 1: And then it's quickly Moto two Senna top five. We
- 58:37Speaker 1: love that for a Senna coming back from that injury.
- 58:40Speaker 1: But obviously it's hard not to say Vieti was going
- 58:44Speaker 1: to do well this weekend because it's VR forty six
- 58:47Speaker 1: and he's part of that whole crew and everything. So yeah,
- 58:50Speaker 1: that was Moto two in a nutshell, basically another Italian weekend.
- 58:55Speaker 4: You guys, I mean you imagine where we're at. We're
- 58:58Speaker 4: you know, if we do the good old because we
- 58:59Speaker 4: got to do it.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Really, we've written versus Australia type thing, even though you're
- 59:03Speaker 3: an a sex boy, Matt, and the point being is
- 59:06Speaker 3: at center agis Joel colso that I mean they are
- 59:09Speaker 3: there or thereabouts.
- 59:10Speaker 4: I mean we've you.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Know, Jake Dixon, now, our guy Jake Dixon does the
- 59:13Speaker 3: business sometimes and then gets himself in a muddle in
- 59:15Speaker 3: other places, and we're just not quite where we need
- 59:19Speaker 3: to be really. I mean, Jake Dixon I had marked
- 59:21Speaker 3: up he could be a Mother two world champion. You know,
- 59:23Speaker 3: we had Scott reading before that looked like he might
- 59:25Speaker 3: be able to do it. We can't make breakthroughs here.
- 59:27Speaker 3: And I keep looking at the bloody attendance for Motor
- 59:30Speaker 3: GP Grand Prix as a whole over the over the year,
- 59:33Speaker 3: and we're breaking records everywhere for attendancies except at Silveston.
- 59:38Speaker 4: We've gone from.
- 59:38Speaker 3: Forty eight thousand three years ago to forty five thousand
- 59:41Speaker 3: a couple of years ago, to forty thousand people at
- 59:44Speaker 3: Trapside on the Sunday. And when when you do something
- 59:48Speaker 3: up on the stage, you know, perhaps you're doing whatever
- 59:50Speaker 3: and you look out and all you can see is
- 59:52Speaker 3: bald heads and flat caps and gray air, you know, like,
- 59:54Speaker 3: where's all the youngster's gone? Despite the fact we've got
- 59:56Speaker 3: some fairly well known bands up on the stage later
- 59:59Speaker 3: on in the evening, my daughters all went to Silverston
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: after six o'clock at night so they could watch the bands.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: Yeah, they think for the Grand Prix, you.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Know, it's and I think that, well, the audits are
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: still batting, you're still you're still at the crease, you're
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: still having a go at it.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Whereas I think the Brits we've rerived relying on.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Jake Dixon at the moment, and you know Scott Ogden
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: in Moto three is not He's there or thereabouts, and
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: our rate Scott quite highly, but you know he's not
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: doing the business either. And you said it ren trying
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: to keep that contract. They're looking over their shoulder. I
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: mentioned it earlier on. There's a log jam of great
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: talent waiting to pinch these places. And when you're in
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: Motor three and Moto two, it's even not about talent.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: It's about how much money you can bring to the team.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: You know, the teams wouldn't.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: Survive if the rider didn't bring enough sponsorship or enough
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: cash into the team with them.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: And I think that we're going to see a bit
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: more of that coming over the next few years because
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: Motor three and Moto two, especially if Liberty and Dawn
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: are downgrade Moto too and Motor three little bit we
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: touched on it earlier, moves them back in the pattern,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: remove their visibility a little bit, and focus more on
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: other GP. The smaller classes then are going to have
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: even more trouble trying to attract the bucks that they
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: need to keep this going at the level it's at.
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: But you're right, Mother three. Best race on it.
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: I mean, my favorite race probably ever was Motor three
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Philip Island about five years ago, six years ago, I
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: can't remember what one. It was, Fifteen riders within a second,
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: all of them going for it.
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: Fantastic.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: I'm going to white flag it and just say, you know,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: let's let's go. England and Australia are together because Joel
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Kelso signed with Michael Lavity next year, so look, we're
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: all family here, we're all together on this.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: But I think.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Basically it wraps up Irish what's the same anyway.
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: Let me tell you politics wise, that is the absolute.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: It's the worst thing you can get involved in, because
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Michael obviously runs under Anon Jack, but brother Eugene runs
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: under the Irish trickula because it is such a contested
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: issue in that particular part of the world.
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: So we can leave it at that.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: And we've got Trump on our shores at the moment
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: as well, and you couldn't get any more contention here
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: in the UK at the minute.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Right on that note, Keith, thanks coming on pit talk,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: so nice to chat with.
