Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Nick Harper: US Correspondent on the response to Donald Trump's policy changes
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, Donald Trump hasn't held back. On his first day
- 0:02Speaker 1: as president, he signed twenty six executive orders ending birthright citizenship,
- 0:07Speaker 1: leaving the World Health Organization, and he backtracked on seventy
- 0:11Speaker 1: eight executive actions taken by the Biden administration. These were
- 0:15Speaker 1: among the orders. He also declared a national order emergency,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and US correspondent Nick Harper joins me, now, thanks for
- 0:22Speaker 1: your time, Nick.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Good warning, Francesca, A busy day.
- 0:26Speaker 1: What does it all mean. What's the reaction being.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, an unbelievably busy day, showing that he is hitting
- 0:33Speaker 2: the ground running and showing that he has a very
- 0:35Speaker 2: clear agenda for his second time in the White House.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The reaction from Republicans his party, as you could imagine,
- 0:42Speaker 2: is one of absolute delight. They feel that Donald Trump,
- 0:45Speaker 2: the man who can save America, is back where he belongs,
- 0:49Speaker 2: back in the White House, and is enacting a whole
- 0:52Speaker 2: raft of legislative agenda that they have been wanting to
- 0:55Speaker 2: see for the last four years, the four years under
- 0:58Speaker 2: President Biden that they feel has been four years of
- 1:01Speaker 2: decline for the country. On the other side of the isle,
- 1:04Speaker 2: the Democrats have been looking at this and wondering if
- 1:08Speaker 2: the country is now going to the dogs because there
- 1:10Speaker 2: is significant concern about some of those executive actions he
- 1:14Speaker 2: signed yesterday. Top of the list amongst worry four Democrats
- 1:19Speaker 2: seems to be what he's doing to the rule of
- 1:21Speaker 2: law and the Justice Department overturning the convictions of one
- 1:25Speaker 2: thy five hundred people who had been convicted for their
- 1:29Speaker 2: actions on January sixth, twenty twenty one, when they stormed
- 1:32Speaker 2: the US Capitol. So it really depends on who you ask.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Some people love Donald Trump being back, some are very
- 1:38Speaker 2: concerned what will happen over the next four years.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Are we going to see similar action today his first
- 1:44Speaker 1: full day as president.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, a little bit different. I think for this day,
- 1:48Speaker 2: there is the potential for more orders to be signed,
- 1:51Speaker 2: but he's also getting into I guess the nitty gritty
- 1:54Speaker 2: of the details today. First order of business at the moment,
- 1:58Speaker 2: he's attending the special National Prayer ceremony that always takes
- 2:03Speaker 2: place the day after inauguration at that taking place in Washington,
- 2:07Speaker 2: DC's National Cathedral. But after that he heads to Capitol
- 2:11Speaker 2: Hill where he'll be meeting with the top Republicans there,
- 2:14Speaker 2: really speaking about what he hopes to achieve on Capitol
- 2:18Speaker 2: Hill to try and get his legislation pushed through over
- 2:21Speaker 2: the coming months. There is also a suggestion that there
- 2:24Speaker 2: will be a big announcement later on infrastructure that's been
- 2:28Speaker 2: teased by his White House Press secretary. Will see if
- 2:30Speaker 2: that develops, but there is, of course, with Donald Trump,
- 2:33Speaker 2: the potential for anything to happen at any moment. We
- 2:36Speaker 2: could see him back in the White House signing more
- 2:38Speaker 2: orders before the end of the day.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Do you see any of these executive orders being challenged
- 2:42Speaker 1: by the courts.
- 2:44Speaker 2: We've already seen challenges actually on one of them, in
- 2:46Speaker 2: particular his birthright citizenship plan. He wants to end that
- 2:50Speaker 2: if you're born in the US, you get citizenship by law,
- 2:54Speaker 2: but already claimants have come forward saying that he has
- 2:56Speaker 2: no authority to redefine American citizenship. And there are three
- 3:01Speaker 2: lawsuits against the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. That's
- 3:05Speaker 2: the one being headed up by Elon musk At. That
- 3:07Speaker 2: lawsuit claim that it is violating transparency laws. Potentially mortal
- 3:12Speaker 2: lawsuits to come on some of the other actions he's
- 3:14Speaker 2: announced as well.
- 3:16Speaker 1: On nex. Thank you so much for your time this morning.
- 3:18Speaker 1: That was arguish. Correspondent Nick Harbitt. For more from earlier
- 3:22Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge.
