- 1:12of Philip Marlow. The original air night January twenty first of nineteen fifteen.
- 1:18The title is The Bid for Freedom. Get this and Get it straight.
- 1:23Crime is a sucker's road. Those who travel had wind up in the gut
- 1:26of the prison of the grave. This time a twisted mind, a whole
- 1:30cut in Nowaiia fence, and a copse in a sare room all added up
- 1:34to freedom, but only for the one who had it. Coming from the
- 1:40pen of Raymond Trember, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous
- 1:44character in the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Now with Gerald Start as Philip Barlowe,
- 2:00we bring you tonight's exciting story. The bid for freedom never fails.
- 2:23When you worry over your bank statement, then hug your office phone from nine
- 2:27to five, anxious for business. Nothing happens, but the minute you decide
- 2:31you'll get rich another day, chuck the puny balance sheet into a bottom drawer
- 2:35and make plans you want it. And that was exactly the way it played.
- 2:38When it's three o'clock on the kind of slate gray afternoon that makes the
- 2:42beckoning Santa Fe railroad vacation goboards look a little more so, I left a
- 2:46note on my office door and headed outside and across the street for some real
- 2:51Hungarian gulag. The second after a way to disappeared into the kitchen with my
- 2:57order. She was standing at my opo, not quite young, not quite
- 3:01pretty, not quite blonde, and when she spoke, not quite sure of
- 3:07what she was going to say. Next. You you're mister Philip marlow aren't
- 3:12you. I mean a private detective whose offices across the street. Yeah,
- 3:16that's right. My name is Helen Asher. I have to find someone you
- 3:23do that kind of work don't you finding people? I mean, it all
- 3:28depends, Missessha. Who's the person you have to find? Leon Rodell a
- 3:32friend, h You see, I just got into town. I had his
- 3:37address in my handbag, but I lost it the handbag, that is.
- 3:42And I don't exactly know which way to do. Well just a minute,
- 3:45miss Asher. Let's take it a step at a time. Huh. And
- 3:46I said, down, no, thank you. I'm in a hurry,
- 3:51mister Marlow, leon Rodell isn't listed in the phone book. I've tried that.
- 3:54And I don't know the name of his firm, his business name.
- 3:59He deals in ceramics. Is that all you can tell me? Oh?
- 4:02No, I have something else. It's a name and an address here in
- 4:06Los Angeles. Fortunately that wasn't in my handbag. But here my crows are
- 4:13no. No, what Massasha? That's idea on the street. What's on
- 4:16the street? Nothing? Nothing at all? Hey, Massasha, Wait a
- 4:20minute. There had been a sort of sad look about Helen Asha that made
- 4:31me want to help her. So after an even saddle look at the plate
- 4:34of bulage that was coming toward me from the kitchen, I followed her in
- 4:39the street. He modeled the goods. When I reached the sidewalk, she
- 4:44was across the street in a cabin away. That might have been the end
- 4:46of it, if something small and ugly that had been standing just outside the
- 4:49restaurant hadn't turned and moved into the alley alongside the building. On a hunch
- 4:54that he'd had something to do with the sudden exitive Massasha, I followed him
- 4:58and found them standing next to a line of empty air, calmly lighting a
- 5:00cigarette, Always running alleys, the lights of cigarettes. You always concerned?
- 5:05What do you know about, Helen Asher? Helen Asher, are having any
- 5:11idea who you're talking about? Come on, little man, I'm talking about
- 5:15the galla. Just get into that cab to the words begin to flow.
- 5:16I wring him out of here. Get your hands off me. You're ripping
- 5:18my pocket, Lucky, it isn't your nose. Come on, talk all
- 5:21right, all right, it's no secret here. Told him this letter,
- 5:25look right here, told the sharp pointed shoes and caught my shin where it
- 5:35really hurts. By the time I was out of the ash cans, back
- 5:40on my feet, I knew the damage had been more to my dignity than
- 5:44anything else. I knew also as the little man was gone and I had
- 5:46no idea where I was. Halfway out toward the street before I realized that
- 5:50I still had the little man's letter punched in my hand. It was min
- 5:55Omaha Life Insurance Company and addressed to one Elden Hook, thirty one Marlborough Drive,
- 6:00Sunnydale, California. Sunny Dale wasn't just around the corner, but the
- 6:05fear I'd seen in Helen Asha's face, plus a score to settle with Eldon.
- 6:10The Hook said. The twenty mile drive into the San Fernando Valley was
- 6:13a minor point under the gray sky overhead that thickened by the minute. Sunnydale
- 6:24about the size of the hole in a candied lifesaver looked as warm and cheerful
- 6:28as crape paper, and number thirty one Marlborough Drive, also gray, was
- 6:31no improvement from the ponderous bleak stone buildings, which said Queen Victoria should have
- 6:36slept there. Asked the high thick wire fence that surrounded it, to the
- 6:40wrought iron gate in front of me labeled Hill Crests Sanitarium. He brought for
- 6:48ten minutes of softly phrased questions and answers to get the boss man at doctor
- 6:51Chernetti to the gate. I told him who I was and what brought me
- 6:56to him, including the description of Eldon Hook. I don't understand. Come
- 7:02in, mister Marlow please. Elton Hook has been with us as an attendant
- 7:08for more than a year now. His behavior has always been satisfactory. Nothing
- 7:13would surprise me anymore today. By the way, sir, what did you
- 7:16say. That woman's name was the one who approached you in the restaurant?
- 7:21Oh, Helen Asher. Is it possible that she was once a patient here?
- 7:25Doctor? No? What about Leon Rodell? Leon Rodell? How do
- 7:30you know that name from? Helen Asher? She was looking for him,
- 7:32That's why she wanted to hire me. She knew he was here in Los
- 7:35Angeles, mister Marlow, this woman was she young? About thirty, blonde?
- 7:43Yeah, that's right. Why? Why? Because this morning, early
- 7:46about six o'clock, one of our patients escaped a woman you know as Helen
- 7:50Asher and we know as Charlotte Rodell, leon Rodell's wife. Oh, she's
- 7:57insane temporarily, Yes, come over here near the fence. I'll show you
- 8:01how to cut away. But how she managed to cut through enough of this
- 8:07thick wire link fence to make a hole large enough to crawl through beyond me
- 8:13here, look behind this eye. Even with a good wire snipper, it
- 8:18would take hours to get through all this strand. And wasn't she missed inside?
- 8:22Yes, but she was only gone minutes. Apparently she had been doing
- 8:26a little at a time during her recreation period at night, whenever she could
- 8:31be careful of the birds and those bushes there. Mister Mallow, Ye see
- 8:33what you mean? Tell me doctor the policeman notified. Of course at once
- 8:37the law compels us to. And frankly, mister Malowe, I'm terribly worried
- 8:43now. You see. It was her husband, Leon Rodell, who had
- 8:48her confined here a year ago. Six months after their marriage she began to
- 8:52act strangely. He felt it would be only with our help that she could
- 8:56ever regain her mental equilibrium. I thought that we were accomplishing that. Apparently,
- 9:01no, obviously no, But mister Mallow, we must call the Los
- 9:05Angeles police right away and tell them that Leon Rodell now lives here, not
- 9:09in San Francisco. He must be protected. Yeah, I see your point.
- 9:15She did break out. She is trying hard to find Leo and free.
- 9:18She ran from elden Hook, who was very close on a trail.
- 9:20That's right, mister Molow. That's why I suggested that Leon Rodel discontinue seeing
- 9:26his wife as of last month. He always left Charlotte very upset. Now
- 9:31I'd better call the police. That's a good idea. Although Charlotte didn't know
- 9:37where her husband was staying or what the name of the ceramics business was,
- 9:41she say, doc, Doc, she claimed that she lost her handbag.
- 9:46Have you found it by any chance? Yes, we did. We found
- 9:50it in the brush near the hole in the fence. I've got it right
- 9:52here. In my debt, I was an addressed of the hard he Yes,
- 10:00here it is three eight four zero. Lookout terrors. Oh got Terrence
- 10:05got Terres. That's right here in the valley up the hill south of Ventura
- 10:09Boulevard. This is the mallow. If possible, I'd like to avoid having
- 10:13the papers get hold of this story. This is a rather exclusive nursing home.
- 10:20So well, in a sense, you're already in this case. Could
- 10:24you try to find Charlotte Rodell and bring her back here before the police do
- 10:28well, doctor Snetti, I would be doing a great service for the woman
- 10:31and her husband. I'll pay you your fee, all right, doctor Snetti,
- 10:37I'll try. I'll call you as soon as I have something. When
- 10:46I first started Marlboro Drive in Sunnydale, it had been a combination of interest
- 10:48in a sad eyed girl and a strong desire to punch elden hook on the
- 10:54nose. Out was business. It took twenty minutes of fast drive and you
- 10:58get over to look out Terrace in the hills that separate Hollywood from the San
- 11:01Fernando Valley itself. The house was a squat chunk of overly stuccoed Archaia California
- 11:09architecture at the top of a steep driveway. When I was out of my
- 11:11car and walking toward the front door, everything was black except tiny pinpoints of
- 11:16light sparkling up from the floor of the valley. I just left good evening.
- 11:22I hope I didn't stottle you, mister Rodel mister. I know your
- 11:26name, yes, sir, And I know some other things as well,
- 11:31like what oh incidental facts like well, it's cool in there, so you
- 11:39haven't been home in hours, and and the refrigerator is empty, so you're
- 11:43only staying here off and on also the old male inside phone bills, et
- 11:48cetera. They don't have your name with this address, so this is probably
- 11:52a friend's house, which totals to what zero? Maybe zero? Mister Rodell,
- 11:58like, you're gonna photo, Look, you don't pay the money you
- 12:01order my good friend in San Francisco. Yeah, you know what I mean,
- 12:05don't chimsster Rodel Yeah. What I don't know is how good friend thinks
- 12:11I'm going to raise that kind of dough. I made it funny. Oh
- 12:16you kidding? What's fifteen thousand to you? You? Shall, I say?
- 12:22An intimate friend of Ordeen black Man. Oh, Ordean black Man,
- 12:26eah Udeene black Men come off at boy, I'm thorough, an eager sort.
- 12:31I know that a lady from Bella has loaded and that she's nuts about
- 12:33you. How, before I leave, a word of advice. Rhodel One
- 12:37can't run away from his obligations forever, and you won't be able to walk
- 12:41away after twenty four hours, unless, of course you pay. Good night,
- 12:50good night, eager. So we meet again. Oh, there'll be
- 13:03some heatyness somewhere. Information operator, I'd like to telephone number of a miss
- 13:11Ordine Blackburn and bel Air. I don't have the address. Have you tried
- 13:15your directly? Sir? I can't put the house burn down one moment.
- 13:20Please, we have an ordined Blackbird and two three two one bel Air Roads.
- 13:26Yeah, that's it. What's the number? Please? Three one one
- 13:30one, Thank you? House burned down? Hello, hell, I was
- 13:43Blackburn, Yes, Blackburn. My name is Philip Mallow. I'm a private
- 13:46detective at the moment. Is anxious to get hold of Leon Rodell. You
- 13:50know where he is? Yes, I do, but I don't think Please,
- 13:52it's important. Leon Rodell's life is in danger. I want to help
- 13:56him. What's going on? There isn't time to explain. That's what she
- 14:01said, said someone who called about twenty minutes ago, a miss Helen Ashur.
- 14:05She said she was supposed to meet lee On at the storeroom about purchasing
- 14:09some ceramics, but she begot his address there. Did you give a tour?
- 14:11Well, yes I did it. Oh great, she's the one who's
- 14:13after And what's that address? Come on quick? Three nine oh nine and
- 14:16a half been durable Avard. It's in the rear of a parking lot.
- 14:20But tell me, mister Mallows. Well, there's plenty wrong for one thing.
- 14:24Okay again, babies, mother turned, I thought it's mister Rodel jumped
- 14:31to a hastic conclusion, didn't I Yeah, yeah, you did. You
- 14:35see, I'm really only a bill collector, just like yourself. So why
- 14:37don't we make up? Well that chance, sweetheart, I wouldn't be happy
- 14:43that way. I wouldn't know when you were telling the truth and when you
- 14:48were lying. You know what I mean? Tomorow hmm, Well, as
- 14:58I said before good night, in just a moment, the second act of
- 15:20Philip Marlowe. But first, CBS will bring you the earth shaking premiere of
- 15:24a new opera Tomorrow Night, an opera written by Alec Templeton, with Charlie
- 15:30McCarthy as a lovelorn singing Bengal lancer, Templeton himself as a maharaja, and
- 15:35Ursul Twing as a flying carpet salesman. You can hear it on the CBS
- 15:39Charlie McCarthy, Edgar Bergen Show Tomorrow Night, and don't forget Red Skelton,
- 15:43Amos and Andy E Varden, Horis Height and all the other CBS Sunday Night
- 15:46stars will also be on hand on most of these same CBS stations. Jack
- 15:52Benny, of course, has heard in them all On Sundays. Now,
- 15:56with our star Gerald Moore, we return to the second act of Philip and
- 16:00Tonight's story, The Bed for Freedom. The gun blood I had been slept
- 16:14with felt like a log chain. Next time would be different. I waited
- 16:21till he drove away, and went out and got my car and unwound my
- 16:23way down the hill again of intire Boulevard, and I turned west and drove
- 16:29out the thirty nine oh nine and a half. There's a glass in Neon
- 16:33super grocery store closed for the knife. The only light showing at Leon Rodell's
- 16:37ceramic outfit trickled out on the ground in a narrow wedge, so it had
- 16:41to be a partly opened back door. And even as I watched it,
- 16:45the wedge danced to a crazy pattern and disappeared. I ran for it and
- 16:49got there just in time to see Charlotte Rodell got down the alley. Second
- 16:53later she vanished in the shadowy jumble of backyard buildings. I knew there was
- 16:59no use trying to follow. Instead, I eased the storeroom door open and
- 17:03looked into a room full of flower pots, slammed vases, and dishes.
- 17:07I think moved shot it. I was sure it had a reason for running,
- 17:11so I went in tore a table in the corner where the only light
- 17:14was burning. It was almost up to it before I saw the reason.
- 17:19It was a good one. Eldon Hooked, the Sanitarium autendant, was on
- 17:23the floor behind the table, his body still trying to arch away from the
- 17:26knife in his back. But I bent over and they opened his eyes.
- 17:30They were already cloudy. It was close. I found the hole in the
- 17:38fence and oh, Dean, what Hook? Who did it? Can you
- 17:42tell me? I figured I left Elden Hook just as he was went to
- 17:52the door that opened to the front of the seramic shop. A desk was
- 17:56there with a phone on it. I got half way through a homicide heural
- 18:00number when a silhouette showed up at the curtains at the front door. Put
- 18:04the phone down, stands back into the shadows. More yet, Hm,
- 18:15that's funny, not necessarily. Mister Rodell. Oh you name's Marlow. I'm
- 18:22private detective. You are Leon Rodell, aren't you? Yes? What are
- 18:27you doing here in my shop? You better finished taking your overcoat off,
- 18:30mister Roodell, see your wife has run away from Hillcrest Sanitarium. Charlotte is
- 18:37out right. How do you know this? She came to me tonight under
- 18:41her phony name, tried to get me to locate you. She lost your
- 18:45address. This is a shock, mister Marlow and Tero Shaka or Charlotte.
- 18:52What an awful thing this is her? Yeah, excuse me, I need
- 18:57this? Sure, no thanks, it's see model. I've only been here
- 19:02in Los Angeles a month. The last time I visited Charlotte that was about
- 19:08three weeks ago, and I hadn't planned to stay out. Wait a minute,
- 19:12my wife is the only one who had my local address. If she
- 19:15lost that, how did you find me? That's a long story. I
- 19:18got the address Charlotte lost, and I've already been up to your house.
- 19:22But the last step was a call to or miss Ordine Blackburn or Dean.
- 19:26Yeah, she sent me up here. Oh then you know about Ordine and
- 19:30me a little Well, I suppose under the circumstances. That's hard for you,
- 19:33ton't understand, Marlow, and even harder to accept you not exactly under
- 19:37the circumstances. Oh well, the law is not as generous as you are,
- 19:41as no room for understanding and sanity isn't grounds for divorce until after three
- 19:47long years of pat and maybe miss Blackburn doesn't want to wait that long.
- 19:51It'll be frank. I don't know. I'm in love with her. I
- 19:53think she loves me. I haven't had the courage to tell her about Charlotte.
- 19:59Ye, maybe won't have to. Charlotte called her up tonight before I
- 20:03did. It's a missus esher. She must have gotten Ordeene's name and the
- 20:06phone number from you somewhere in that last visit of yours. That's impossible,
- 20:08and she got it somewhere. Well, do you know where Charlotte is.
- 20:14We've got to find her. She's not responsible. She might even be dangerous.
- 20:17It's an understatement, Rodell. She's deadly, deadly. I don't understand.
- 20:22Come here, never behind that table there where the light is. Go
- 20:26ahead, and look when I showed up here and I saw Charlotte running away,
- 20:30I came in and found that to tell you. Yeah, he knew
- 20:37she'd escaped. He found the hole in the fence where she got out,
- 20:40and he's been following her on his own. Strangely enough, he's dead.
- 20:44He's dead. He's sorry. What model she must be completely mad. We've
- 20:53got to stop her. Why she might go for Ordine next time? Are
- 20:56you yeah? What can we do? Well? You can go home.
- 21:00She doesn't know that address up there, so he'll be okay on that score.
- 21:03All right, Roadell, listen, keep your doors locked up there,
- 21:07shirt, you said shot. I know, I know. I'm not thinking
- 21:11about Charlotte. Now there's something else. The guy in San Francisco that you
- 21:15owe all that money to. What about him? Send a mug down here
- 21:18who intends to collect it. I've tangled with him already. He means business.
- 21:22So be careful, Rodell, and I'll see as soon as I can.
- 21:25Mmm. I watched him go out the door, limpley, his head
- 21:32down. He looked about as tough as a bowl of whipped cream. And
- 21:37I went back to the desk again and saw that he left his overcoat where
- 21:40he dropped it on the chair. I called the police, game in the
- 21:42word on Charlotte, and when that was over, I had to switch on
- 21:45the desk light to check the sanitarium number before I could call doctor Chennetti.
- 21:51That's when I saw the letter lying on the desk. An important letter,
- 21:53but for one reason only. It was addressed to Leon Roodell at his house
- 21:57on look Out Terrace. Was an open invitation to anybody who'd come to the
- 22:02shop looking for that particular piece of information. There was no doubt in my
- 22:07mind that Charlotte had seen it, which made it long past time for me
- 22:10to get up there. And I'm the double one. I turned, headed
- 22:14for the door and stopped. All in one motion. A pair of headlights
- 22:17slashed the windows and then blinked out. I stepped back out of the circle
- 22:21of light from the desklap and waited. A second later, the hulk of
- 22:25mister Eager filled the open back door. He was still very sure of himself.
- 22:30He took in the storeroom with one long last night sidled through the cutter
- 22:33as definitely as a rumba dancer, tore the door with the desk and I
- 22:37were waiting. The instant he got within reach, I swung again. You'll
- 22:45wait, je bitch once, big man. Why don't you sit on it,
- 22:48sick. That's glare at the top of that clip on the chap you
- 22:52gave me. Oh no, oh, not quite a mess, even Steve,
- 23:00now, big man. I went down that time he took the chair
- 23:04of Rodell's overcoat and half the step on the desk with him. He was
- 23:08still moving, trying to free himself at the tangle, so I reached for
- 23:11him again, but got only a fistfull of the overcoat Rodell. It left
- 23:14behind me, and suddenly my hand stung like I grabbed the wrong end of
- 23:18a bumblebee. Projected back and looked at the palm. Something was stuck to
- 23:22my skin, something I couldn't understand until finally a realization whose through the molasses
- 23:27in my brain. I left and ran all the way to my car and
- 23:30almost sprung the frame, twisting up look out terrace. I parked down the
- 23:44hill from thirty eight to forty and ran as far as my house next door,
- 23:47where I got to the back hop of the fence and got my gun
- 23:48in hand. As I expected, leon Odell was there, and so was
- 23:52Charlotte and the coop. The door open was poised at the top of the
- 23:56precipitous driveway like a lead carn a roller coaster. I get in the car.
- 24:03We haven't much time. I did everything just like you said. I
- 24:07love my hand. I had to find you did not you did, And
- 24:14then I learned about your shop and I went through. You shouldn't have done
- 24:17that. I get in the car lay On, I thought what you'd done
- 24:21to that mister hook from the sanitary You kill him with a knife. I
- 24:26had to Charlotte. He's been spying on us all the time, and you
- 24:29all our plans and you want lots of money to keep quiet. I wish
- 24:34you had the shot it. It doesn't matter anymore. Don't kid yourself.
- 24:41Oh I found Leon by myself, so I really don't need you after all.
- 24:47I only wish you were right. Baby, don't move Rodel. But
- 24:49you don't understand, mister Morow. Leon and I are going away together.
- 24:52I understand, all right, more than you do that Charlotte, and I
- 24:56think you better go in the house and wait for us. No, don't
- 24:59plea, I asked why, But don't be low some trip. You headn't
- 25:12mind Rodell your wife and this coup and straight down over the bank strictly solo.
- 25:19She didn't even suspect. Keep your hands off me, sure, sure,
- 25:23I'd never get them clean again. But it'll give me great satisfaction to
- 25:27drop you with a bullet. And I'll do just that if you take one
- 25:32step before the police get here, stand still, Rodell, real still,
- 25:51really all that happened, Doctor Jeannetti, I'm sorry you were worried, and
- 25:56I'm mostly glad. I'm back so by, my dear, and we'll talk
- 26:00more about it in the morning. What you need right now is a good
- 26:03night's rest in your own bed. Ah, you're right, doctor, I'm
- 26:07very tired. Good night, mister, No night. She still doesn't realize
- 26:17that shit. No, and it's a good thing. Plenty of time for
- 26:19that later, when it can come gradually. At this point, she could
- 26:23tear herself to pieces of a thing like this. Yeah. The husband the
- 26:27words that are run away and helps her do it for the sole purpose of
- 26:30getting her out where you can kill her. I'm a security in that set
- 26:34up. Huh. No, you mentioned another woman, mister Marlow, Miss
- 26:40Ordine Blackburn, Oh, dean gullible, rich girl without much on the ball.
- 26:45Rodell planned to marry her and solve all his money problems. Believe me,
- 26:48Doki had him big ones. I see, well, she's better off
- 26:52this way. Yeah. Six months of marriage to Rodell and she'd have been
- 26:56a candidate for your sanitarium herself. Is that kind of a guy. And
- 27:00my late employee Elden Hook. Well, he knew that Rodel had been urging
- 27:03his wife to run away, and then he cut that hole in the fence.
- 27:07Hook found out that Rodel was interested in Nordine, and he tried to
- 27:10shake Rodel down, signed his own death warrant on the spot. You know,
- 27:15it's sometimes frightening to me, mister Maddl, to realize how many warped
- 27:19and twisted minds there are that never get help until it's far too late.
- 27:25But there's always some good in every bad thing. They say, what about
- 27:27this case, Charlotte? I expect her to recover completely soon because now the
- 27:33main contributor to her neurosis, to speaker, is gone forever. That was
- 27:37Leon Rodel. Yeah, well, Doc, it's a long way back to
- 27:41Hollywood. I better get going. And just one thing more, if you
- 27:45don't mind, Charlotte would have died in a smashed car and what would have
- 27:49passed for an accident. Also, she'd have been blamed for Hook's murder if
- 27:53you hadn't found out the truth about Rodell. I'm very curious. Remember the
- 27:59birds grew along your fence outside blasted nooses. Yeah, but as you just
- 28:03said, Doc, it's always some good and every bad thing. Odell told
- 28:08me that he hadn't been up here for three weeks, yet tonight's overcoat was
- 28:12loaded with birds. I got one of my hand from it that gave me
- 28:17a hunch off, and there on its play disappointed to the contrary, satisfied
- 28:22completely. Good night, Mistermallow, Good night Doc. As I left Hillcrest
- 28:38Sanitarium and drove back across the wide flat San Fernando Valley, dark and quiet
- 28:44in the hour just before dawn, I found myself being grateful for a lot
- 28:48of little orderly things, things like the clear white line down the middle of
- 28:53the road, the rhythm of the motor in my car, and the prospect
- 28:56of going home to my owns. You're a Parma. Then I wondered about
- 29:03Charlotte and the sort of nightmare jungle the world must be to her mind,
- 29:07twisted suddenly out of purpose. But there is no symmetry or logic. But
- 29:15nightmares can be banished, bears driven away, and in time, with doctor
- 29:21Chenettick's help, should come out of it all right. But the others,
- 29:26others, like Hook and Rodel, for them, the jungle is home,
- 29:33no nightmare that they live in it by choice, until one way or another
- 29:38they're destroyed, choked his death by the very tangle they hide him. Well,
- 29:47that's fair enough. And The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond Chandler's
- 30:10most famous character, Star Gerald Moore, are produced and directed by Norman McDonnell
- 30:15and are written for radio by Robert Mitchell and Gene Leffard. Featured in the
- 30:18cast were Gene Bates, Larry Dobkin, Yvon Patty, Harold Drenforth, Jack
- 30:23Edwards, and John T. Smith. The special music is composed and conducted
- 30:27by Richard Runt. He shuring me with us again next week when Philip Marlowe
- 30:37says, this time of fireball too handy with a target pistol, let me
- 30:41down our rocky road, past the sleezy money grubbad or curly headed cops.
- 30:47And it might have gotten worse if I hadn't slowed down, if they have
- 30:51been turned battered but unbowed by his bout with bred Allen last Sunday night,
- 31:07Jack Benny will be back at the same old stand tomorrow night, Jaunty as
- 31:11ever, And why not, Jack has just been elected the King of Hearts
- 31:15by the American Heart Association. Listen for Jack Benny Tomorrow on CBS. This
- 31:21is Roy Rowan speaking Now. Stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over
- 31:26most of these same CBS stations. This is CBS where Philip Marlow takes the
- 31:32case every Saturday night the Columbia Broadcasting System. This is Andrew J. Graham,
- 31:51author of the web surface series Oh and a Man of His Wife.
- 31:53You're listening to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. Welcome back. It's
- 32:05kind of interesting. In the closing monologue, Marlowe basically considers the view of
- 32:16the world by criminals to be just as twisted and wrong as those who have
- 32:24been institutionalized, so it says something about Marlowe's overall view of crime. I
- 32:30found it somewhat interesting. The name that was used by the lady who escaped
- 32:38was Helen Asher. For those of you who are big fans of old time
- 32:45radio detectives, the name Helen asherll ring a bell because Helen Asher was the
- 32:51name of Richard Domond's girlfriend and kind of odd, you know, character from
- 33:00Philip Marlow adopts a name from the Adventures of Richard Domon, which will be
- 33:07playing in a little less than a year, so a good reminder there.
- 33:12Also, I like, while Marlowe misjudges the husband in this, he doesn't
- 33:19give the husband key clues to cause mayhem, which was something that Marlow did
- 33:25a lot in early episodes. He would totally give someone all the information they
- 33:37need so they go out and kill somebody. Marlow doesn't give that much information.
- 33:43And it does show how the show really does correct any tendencies it has
- 33:49towards excesses in terms of the tops of plots, the tops of twists.
- 33:53And that's rare because most shows, when they have a flaw that's recurring,
- 34:00they don't usually get rid of it. It just kind of stays there,
- 34:02and it's one of those things you have to just accept, you know that.
- 34:07That's one of those things they do with Philip Marlow. The show seems
- 34:13to adapt and to get better and they avoid falling into too many consistent pitfalls
- 34:20for too long. Anyway. All right, Well, that will do it
- 34:22for today. Join us back here tomorrow for the Adventures of Philip Marlow in
- 34:27the meantime. Sender comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow
