- 0:00Speaker 1: It's time for the ucon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Were
- 0:03Speaker 1: joined by Dan Hurley Mike Crispino. With the Huskies off
- 0:07Speaker 1: a scintillating win in Milwaukee over the weekend. Biggest crowd
- 0:11Speaker 1: to ever watch a Marquette, Golden Eagles or a Warriors
- 0:15Speaker 1: game in history eighteen thousand plus on hand, they already
- 0:20Speaker 1: average about seventeen in the big building at five served
- 0:24Speaker 1: form and coach, you come into a game like that
- 0:27Speaker 1: and they're all jacked up. Obviously, they're nine and one,
- 0:30Speaker 1: they're half game out in first place in the conference.
- 0:34Speaker 1: The start you had had to be a relief in
- 0:38Speaker 1: some ways, you and the coaching staff because the ball
- 0:41Speaker 1: kept going in for you Kunn, and it wasn't going
- 0:44Speaker 1: in for Marquette.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I mean, you know, first of all too, I mean
- 0:48Speaker 3: I just Marquette's whole operation. I mean, the arena itself,
- 0:54Speaker 3: you know, and their crowd. I mean they're and it's
- 0:56Speaker 3: not just National Marquette Day. I mean every time we've
- 1:00Speaker 3: been there, just you know, the crowd is wearing gold
- 1:04Speaker 3: and blue. You know they're into it. You know, every
- 1:07Speaker 3: possession of the game. You know, they weren't kind of
- 1:10Speaker 3: waiting for Marquette to start playing well, you know, they're
- 1:12Speaker 3: just like a factor, you know, in the game. So
- 1:15Speaker 3: they've got just you know, I didn't know understand the eagle.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I don't know if that was a golden eagle that
- 1:21Speaker 3: they had on the court for the anthem, But that's
- 1:23Speaker 3: obviously not important, right Mike, did you see the eagle?
- 1:27Speaker 2: I did.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It was pretty impressive.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I got to say, yeah, yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I focused on the eagle the whole anthem. I couldn't concentrate.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I was distracted by the eagle. But yeah, I mean
- 1:37Speaker 3: we were concerned Hassan's hobbled going in. They play pressure defense,
- 1:42Speaker 3: they pressed, they get after you. They have the best
- 1:45Speaker 3: guard defensive player in the country. And you're already a
- 1:49Speaker 3: team that you know, with Noel out who and you know,
- 1:53Speaker 3: having you know, Aiden having you know, struggled a lot
- 1:56Speaker 3: against teams. The pressure and a hobbled Hassan. I mean,
- 2:00Speaker 3: we knew that the turnovers could be a real issue.
- 2:03Speaker 3: And obviously, you know, without Jalen Stewart's start, you know,
- 2:07Speaker 3: the way that that guy just stepped up and buried
- 2:10Speaker 3: you know, two of the three threes or were not
- 2:14Speaker 3: the easiest of threes and it just gave us confidence.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It gave us a real shot in the arm, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 3: going into them call a timeout and playing with a cushion.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You know what, was a huge factor. We could thank
- 2:26Speaker 2: Jay Stu for.
- 2:26Speaker 1: That and so many times, Dan, you know, teams get
- 2:31Speaker 1: leads on the road, big leads, and then they can't
- 2:33Speaker 1: hang on. But you really, you really put forty minutes
- 2:37Speaker 1: together there as a team, and that's hard to do
- 2:40Speaker 1: because you know, the home team, with all those folks
- 2:43Speaker 1: behind him, they're going to get some momentum at some
- 2:45Speaker 1: point in the game. And it was ironic that throughout
- 2:48Speaker 1: the game kept making big shots. I mean, I ran
- 2:52Speaker 1: out of expletives. It was Caravan threw in a couple.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I mean Samson Johnson the reverse obviously solo knocking down
- 3:00Speaker 1: ridiculous threes. I mean, how many times did you hold
- 3:03Speaker 1: off the momentum you were facing, Because when you're on
- 3:06Speaker 1: the road and a team that good, that's that's a
- 3:09Speaker 1: tough assignment.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I mean, those guys there, I mean they played like
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know, like they played like guys that would have
- 3:15Speaker 3: played and did those types of things on the teams
- 3:19Speaker 3: the last two years. You know, I think those guys
- 3:21Speaker 3: I think you know Samson Johnson in that game, I
- 3:25Speaker 3: mean he played the way you know our you know,
- 3:28Speaker 3: our players have played the last two years and games
- 3:30Speaker 3: like that. You know, Samson was you know, he was
- 3:33Speaker 3: a warrior. He was he was great defensively and you know,
- 3:36Speaker 3: huge n one you know, to get the lead back
- 3:38Speaker 3: to you know, to eight or nine or whatever it was,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and and uh, you know solo ball, like just the
- 3:44Speaker 3: way you know, he just stepped up and made huge
- 3:46Speaker 3: shots and in some cases tough shots.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Uh, in a game we had to win.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And you know Alex just you know, get into the
- 3:53Speaker 3: free throw line and you know, hitting a big floater
- 3:56Speaker 3: and you're making a big corner three there. You know,
- 3:59Speaker 3: just that you know, those three guys in the game,
- 4:02Speaker 3: Jalen Stewart's start, Jayden Ross's defense. I mean there was
- 4:05Speaker 3: just there were just some qualities and characteristics, uh Hassandiarra
- 4:10Speaker 3: is just well and toughness to just play compromised out
- 4:14Speaker 3: there and not and refuse to leave the court and uh,
- 4:18Speaker 3: you know, do enough to get us a win. You know,
- 4:20Speaker 3: that was like a great feeling we've.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Had some Obviously, the Colorado loss.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Is still an anchor and you know, and a loss
- 4:28Speaker 3: that that is not aging well.
- 4:29Speaker 2: But you know, we've had some of these.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Games during the year that have been I think impressive performances.
- 4:34Speaker 3: That road win, the road win of Texas, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 3: I think that those are like some you know, some
- 4:39Speaker 3: great wins the Baylor went at home with.
- 4:42Speaker 2: With alex I mean, the team has shown its quality.
- 4:45Speaker 3: We just uh, you know, we just got to get
- 4:48Speaker 3: more of the team shown the quality.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about the urgency level. I thought the
- 4:54Speaker 1: team looked so urgent at the start of that game
- 4:57Speaker 1: on all levels and and obviously you have to to
- 5:00Speaker 1: do that to be successful against a great team. You're
- 5:02Speaker 1: playing a top ten team in their place. Where did
- 5:05Speaker 1: that come from? I mean there have been obviously games
- 5:08Speaker 1: where you consplayed really well the entire ballgame one games
- 5:11Speaker 1: like you just talked about, But it looked to me
- 5:13Speaker 1: like the urgency that you guys played within that game
- 5:18Speaker 1: was intense and you have to have it to be
- 5:21Speaker 1: successful against a team like Marquette.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I mean, well, the players that played the most prominent
- 5:28Speaker 3: minutes in that one for us were you the guys
- 5:32Speaker 3: that had been in the program, you know, with all
- 5:34Speaker 3: the guys that were on the championship team or teams.
- 5:39Speaker 2: It was.
- 5:41Speaker 3: The three sophomores that either were contributing offensively defensively. Obviously
- 5:46Speaker 3: Jay stew wishes he could get back the six turnovers,
- 5:49Speaker 3: but you know, without the start, it doesn't the game
- 5:52Speaker 3: doesn't play out like that.
- 5:53Speaker 2: For us. It was Caravan, it was Samson, Johnson.
- 5:56Speaker 3: It was a Sandier, it was those It was those
- 6:00Speaker 3: six guys that that you know, really carried the weight
- 6:04Speaker 3: of of staying in the hunt to win the regular
- 6:08Speaker 3: season and you know, and trying to hold on to.
- 6:11Speaker 2: That that goal and that you know longer.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You know, if we lost that game and you know,
- 6:17Speaker 3: fell to we made a seven and four, uh, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 3: just being that many games behind with a lot of
- 6:23Speaker 3: tough games to go, it probably you know, would have
- 6:26Speaker 3: looked like it would you know, probably over for us
- 6:28Speaker 3: that way.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But you know, we we.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Guarded a lot better with more urgency, and we just
- 6:34Speaker 3: we only played the guys. Obviously it was tough to
- 6:36Speaker 3: play Hassan as much as we did because he's so
- 6:39Speaker 3: banged up, but you know, we just stuck with the
- 6:43Speaker 3: with with the most tough people that that we're going
- 6:48Speaker 3: to play with the mindset of just a refusal to lose,
- 6:51Speaker 3: and even if we would have come up short, I
- 6:54Speaker 3: think that's how we got to go down from here
- 6:56Speaker 3: on out.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a real step forward, no question about it.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Third win over ranked team, another win over a Quad
- 7:02Speaker 1: one team. You got four more opportunities. Dan Hurley with
- 7:06Speaker 1: us back in just a Moment with the Yukon Men's
