[upbeat music] Uh, good evening, everybody.
• 0:15
Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 162 today. JK? Nothing clever. [laughs] JK to the right of me as normal. Hi. As normal. Mr. T Burger with his... Gotta tell us how many sheets of drywall you got later. 192.
• 0:33
192 sheets of drywall. That's almost close to that three sheets to the wind. And splitting the uprights, Sam D. Sam D. Welcome, Sam. Thank you very much. [laughs] Thank you. Yeah.
• 0:46
Well, boy howdy, what's going on out there? Wind. That's- Spring, the spring winds... the operative word for the week- Yes... is wind. Yes. I rode my bike. I did, too. It's rare that I've been riding my bike.
• 1:01
My n- knee is finally feeling better though, so. Good.
• 1:04
I, I rode it from the shop all the way across the parking lot, and I was gonna go down to Bremen, but Dan and Jessica were sitting at Amorphic, so I just stopped there and then I came back here. [laughs] Baby steps, man.
• 1:14
I was like, I got like 1,000-foot ride in. That's like a quarter mile. Baby- That's a solid quarter mile. It's, yeah, yeah.
• 1:19
I, uh, was on my bike at 5:44 this morning to go move a car so they could have the delivery vehicle. Oh, so they could load the drywall into the house? Right. Right. Right.
• 1:30
So I went on a very ambitious windy journey on Sunday to see, uh, Matt Motherfucking Tanna and Stacks and those cats over at, uh, Tonic, directly headwind into the direction- Yeah, that was brutal... 18 the entire way.
• 1:48
It was like- Was, was it in the direction both ways? Yes-ish. [laughs] Whatever. It, whatever it did, it, it, I had to stop at Duke's, for God sakes. Oh, that's a rarity. Exactly.
• 1:59
Also that I wasn't there is even more [laughs] of a rarity. Yeah. [laughs] I was just like, "Shit." I'm like, "Oh, my God, this is..." But that, but that was Sunday, right? Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. Sunday, Sunday.
• 2:09
Yeah, I caught up with you at the later stop. Oh, right on. Yep, yep. Yeah. And we were over here It was amazing, though. And things are otherwise. What time was that? No, it was 31.
• 2:17
'Cause I ran into you at Bremen on Sunday. Yeah. The problem being the end of Su- Sunday was stopping there, and then I stopped at, uh,
• 2:28
Towner and yapped with Handsome Bob over, [laughs] I don't know, probably like a half a bottle of fucking whiskey [laughs] and saw Mike. Oh, make for a good ride home.
• 2:38
[laughs] Then I stopped at Dino's for a fucking suit of suit. Oh, boy. [laughs] Yeah, that's- They're like, they're like, "Hey, it's half off today." That's the, the- And I'm like-... Triangle of Death...
• 2:47
and I'm like, "The half off today? Okay, I'll pay three bucks for a fucking sudo suit. All right." Mm-hmm. So yeah, that was- Good deal... yeah. And like 17 miles of the ride. There you go. Right on, right on.
• 3:00
So ride your bike even if you get all fun and shit to- Well, that was-... get in the-... that was still the warm day of the week, though... ish. No, this was Sunday. It was, it was second. Yeah, it was warm-ish.
• 3:09
Saturday was hot. It was like 36. It was gorgeous. 36 on Wednesday. I don't know what it is today yet. Yeah. [laughs] Well, it's cold now. No, yeah. [laughs] Right. It's cold on Wednesday. Yeah, it was good.
• 3:19
It was cold on Wednesday. Yeah. Call me on a Sunday. Oom pa pa, oom pa pa kay. So, uh, Sam brought in a couple of nice rides for some, some tuning up and some- PLCs... some slight changes of, uh, equipment.
• 3:33
Bubbly of brake oils is- How long... Sam's got a Krampus, which is as custom- Oh, that's sweet... as Krampuses can get probably. Yeah. How long have you had that thing? Whatever the year they first came out.
• 3:44
It seems like eight years or so. It, it is a long time. About eight years. That's a long time. I got it right away, first one. Yeah. Yeah, it's the green one. But it's blinged out. The sparkly green.
• 3:53
You, you've definitely done up on that thing. Yeah, sparkly. It's a hell of a bike. It's got a king, got a king bottom bracket, right? Oh, yeah. It's, it's... Yeah. Now- The green one. Of course.
• 4:05
[laughs] They have matches, yeah, with the fancy I9 hubs and all good stuff. And then, uh, you also brought in what never actually became a production bike. It's a Schlick Tashunka, which is the 29- A Tatanka.
• 4:20
A Tashunka. Tatanka would be the, uh, uh- 26... I, I suppose nowadays, eight years later, we'd- That's-... probably weren't getting yelled at as much for appropriating, um, Native American terms for our- [laughs]...
• 4:30
our bikes, but we might have to have r- renamed them. I'm not sure. But it was the last couple of bikes that we worked with Tom Teasdale on and- Right...
• 4:39
dialed in the geometry, got everything right, made maybe half a dozen of them and, eh. [laughs] I didn't really think about that. Well, he- He passed away. So the...
• 4:48
I mean, uh, we can maybe get Sam to give us a little bit of insight on if there's more similar than difference or what, if, you know.
• 4:56
I mean, the Tashunka was designed with a 170 bottom bracket or 170 rear end and 100 millimeter bottom bracket to try and get a little stronger wheels on it.
• 5:09
So it's early, early 29 plus bikes, I just always felt like they were a little noodly in the wheel, not necessarily the frame. Oh, really? But, uh, anyway. Yeah. Yeah. You've ridden them both pretty extensively.
• 5:22
To be honest, I have not ridden the Tashunka that much, but I can tell you my nephew just shreds it so hard. He, I, he just loves it. And we're still on the hunt for [laughs] 29 by 3.0 tires, too.
• 5:35
It's like- Oh, goodness gracious... [laughs] They're hard to come by. [laughs] Well, he's running the Chronicles, which he really likes, but I...
• 5:41
They don't, I believe they don't make them anymore is the real problem there. So the biggest ones we could find- Is it the Chronicles of Narnia? Yeah, Chronicle.
• 5:49
The, the biggest, the biggest, largest we can find right now is the, uh, the Coronado. Yeah, the 2.8 Coronado. From, uh, Teravail, which is a decent tire for sure. Um,
• 6:00
it's just everybody's kinda seems like, "Well, I don't think I need it that big." I still love 29 plus. Mm-hmm. Especially for me- I love-... for urban assault. A- as- Jesus, yes...
• 6:09
as, as much for- The roll is really good... as much for riding on trails, you know? Dealing with the city Okay, talking regionally Hot rolling ish... re- City of Milwaukee- Mm-hmm... infrastructure downtown.
• 6:20
Construction everywhere. Yeah. 29 plus urban assault. [laughs] It's, it's the tire I ride more than any other bike. There you go. S- forgiving enough You, and you have another, you have a- It's a Gnarvester...
• 6:30
you have a Gnarvester 29 plus as well. Yep. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. And that came out of your shop, of course. That's a tie bike, right? Yeah. Yeah, that was- Tie frame... that was f- [laughs] that was four shops ago now.
• 6:41
[laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Good Lord, and you know what? We're only about, uh, now- Wait, are we here?... like 400 feet from it. [bell ringing] Oh, are we already there? I guess. Oh, no, I thought that was the cue.
• 6:51
Are we almost there? I was gonna take a drink, but- Oh... yeah, I guess we're at the top of the hill. Yeah. I guess that was. Well, that's what- I was like, JK, like you guys [bell ringing] up ahead of us.
• 6:58
That happened pretty fast. That guy's hard. Oh, yeah... that guy hauls ass. Well, this, yeah, the bell- Top notch... the bell actually has the Schlick Cycles logo on it from- It sure does...
• 7:04
from the, from the other shop, which again, we could throw a rock and hit. The Logic Bomb. And is also still there in a different guise, but, uh, JK, tell us about the beer you brought today, please.
• 7:15
It is from Surly Brewing over there in Minneapolis. It's the Logic Bomb, and they had it on tap at Tonic, where I saw Tyner and Jonas and
• 7:29
Javo and Stacks Edwards, the Third Coast Blues whatever, something like that. Something cool to do on Sundays. So- And got me on my bike and rode into the wind all the way there, so. Well, this is new for 22.
• 7:45
This is a new beer for Surly. Yeah. Oh, no. Apparently it's, yeah, whatever. I do like the can. It was, it came that they said it, and I was like, "Oh, hey, give me this." Green can. That's a good can.
• 7:56
Oh, hell yeah, yeah. They had it on tap, so I didn't even know that. I personally would not quite like it myself. I had to go, I had to buy some rolling papers, and [laughs] I saw these.
• 8:04
[laughs] I was like, "Why, I might as well buy beer while I'm here." [laughs] Good, good call. Yeah. 'Cause- Sure as shit... we're down to, like, singles of everything else that was- What?... left in the cooler.
• 8:13
Right, right. Uh, I'd what they- It's all about timing. I think, um- [laughs]... I don't know who wrote this, but I was, Beer Advocate, I'm, I'm not s-
• 8:21
I, I couldn't get a lot of information out of it, so I d- this was on one of those sites, but I think it might have been somebody from, that was an employee, possibly of Surly, listing all the new beers that they've got coming out, and this one,
• 8:34
it says, "Bye bye, Extra Citra. We won't miss you. Hello, Logic Bomb. Hopefully a better year-round pale ale." Hmm.
• 8:42
I, it is, I, it's usually- Oh, there, there, I think there was, like, a contingent within there about certain types of hops that they were bringing in and they finally said, "No, we're not gonna have those anymore.
• 8:54
Bye bye." Okay. Hmm. Well, that might explain why they've got a bunch of new brews. I don't know, did it sound like I did a War of the Worlds? I was trying to, "And Orson Welles," it.
• 9:05
[laughs] "We will serve no beer before its time." "No." [laughs] Yeah. "Paul Masson." [laughs] [snorts] Oh, he's snorting. [laughs] He's making- Got to mock... himself snort, which is even better.
• 9:20
No, if, no, you gotta put it in the show notes. Self-snorting. Uh, Orson Welles doing the Paul Masson, uh- No, I remember those days for sure... "Ah, the French..." The, the thing. Yeah, yeah, I don't know. Gambon's...
• 9:34
that's what I was thinking of. Although, okay. [laughs] Why I could face love it. Yep, that's it for sure. Right. Uh, we could talk about River West 24 registration again. We gotta do it. 'Cause it's coming up.
• 9:53
May 15th. You still have to sign up. Still gotta sign up, still gotta be there. Riverwest24.com, make sure you- Oh, 'cause if you show up to my house and you have not signed up, I'm not giving you a beer.
• 10:01
I'm giving you 100. Uh-huh. The, uh- 'Cause you don't have to sign up this year if you don't want to. Yeah. The, uh- Are you gonna-... Pol- the Polish Moon thing is sometime in early June- Oh... I do believe.
• 10:15
Somewhere on Fifth Street, where they kinda close it down- Yeah... and- Oh... do a little fun lap and whatever. We were- That's a thing. Uh, but Raise in Tosa- Has that, uh-...
• 10:28
is doing that, uh, thing with, uh, Toppling Goliath- Yeah... in a couple weeks. Sounds interesting. Which sounds like a reason to [drum beating] this. [laughs] God, yeah. I'm gonna get you- All right.
• 10:38
Every other week I'm gonna fucking tap in my- I know, I'm gonna get a piece of foam pad for over here. Right, right. Like drum pad. Well, I'm trying to layer myself so I don't make a big old fuss. [laughs] All right.
• 10:49
[laughs] Maybe you should get some mittens. I know, look at me. We, mittens. I, I, I, I have in the freezer. So now that we've got the, um, now that we've got the drywall in the house,
• 11:01
about- God, that sounds so calming... about a month ago, Molly said to me, she's like, "You know what'd be really cool? Is if we did the tattoo bonus again at our house, but with our house being, like, us living in it."
• 11:14
And I'm like, "I've been thinking about that for months. That's why I'm busting ass." And about four days later, she comes back to me and she's like, "You know what? We can't do it." I'm like, "What? Why not?"
• 11:25
She's like, "I just can't listen to Head East for 24 hours- [laughs]... in my house." [laughs] [singing] Save my life, I'm going down for the last time.
• 11:36
And I was like [laughs] and I thought about it for a little bit, I'm like, "Oh, God, it would really traumatize the toddler." [laughs] Oh.
• 11:42
If he just had it on his net for 24 hours straight, he'd probably end up like a lunatic. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So I'm like, "Okay.
• 11:49
All right, make-" That, but that real quiet one, that real quiet [laughs] like- Yeah, right, right... calculating murderer. You know? Exactly. Getting ready to, you know, strike at once and kill a whole room.
• 11:58
Yeah, I, I, but- Hello, little boy. Why don't you just talk to me? But I was literally like- In the 1970s reference... as soon as she said that, it like popped into my mind, I'm like, "You're right.
• 12:06
I, you know, I can't wake up listening to Head East starting over and over." That's, i- is that a mandatory thing to do or is it just something that- Oh, yeah.
• 12:17
You, you have to do that for- Does every tattoo artist do it? Everyone I've ever been tattooed by Ah. Well, there you go, 'cause you can go to any one of several shops now. Oh, yeah.
• 12:28
No, you get the logo, you can go anywhere. Right You can go to Laurent at Old Salt in Bay View if you wanted to, and it'd be a great tattoo, and probably not listening to that.
• 12:37
Now that I think about it, maybe I'll do that. You'd take a ride down there during the middle of the ride- Just to get the tattoo... ride there during the middle of the ride To have Ron give me the tattoo?
• 12:44
You're damn right. Hey, hey, hey, hey, here's something else. Hey. Bike- Bikes, Boat and a Goat. Oh, is that happening again? Is- Yeah... is tentatively scheduled for- It just happened today. Wait, what?
• 12:55
Uh, the bike drive happened today, the- Oh, that was today? Yeah. Ah. Uh-oh. Which means- We, we missed the, uh- Well-... Earth Day... dear liste- yes, dear listener, you have... Here in the real world, it's, uh, Friday.
• 13:13
Oh, we can- Oh... we can still get there. We can, yes. [laughs] But these people can't. So this is, this is... Okay, so this is a Lake Express thing where- Yeah...
• 13:21
you donate a bike and get a round trip ferry ticket across the big Lake Michigan there, the Sea of Wisconsin or whatever it's called. The first 500 donations they say. Yeah, you know, it...
• 13:33
People get down there earlier every year- Yeah... 'cause it's a hell of a deal, you know. It's a- It is. Oh, it's a steal...
• 13:37
but they always, like, play it close to the vest, [laughs] like, just, like, announce it, like, now. So as not to encourage people to- They just never pull it off... and there are...
• 13:46
Uh, it's, it's a $200 round trip these days. Yeah. It's more than that, I think. It might be a little more. With the bike- Yeah...
• 13:51
it might be 200, but- Yeah, the bike was an extra 15, which they don't include in the round trip ticket, by the way, that you get for donating a bike. So you gotta pay it. Right.
• 13:59
So but on the, on the Bikes, Boat and a Goat thing, w- we wanna roll coal across the lake up there on the old, uh, Badger Ferry. Yeah.
• 14:09
That's the idea is to take the last of the coal burners, 'cause that puppy might not be going for much longer. Oh, they just got a new paint job, dude. Did they? So- They're, they're gonna be okay...
• 14:18
I don't know how long they're- No, they won't... how long is their- That's, that's death row... whatever. How long is their ash- What, they're painting-... their ash permit gonna last?
• 14:23
Oh, what, polishing the brass on the Titanic, are you?... Oh. Oh. [laughs] I see where you're going with this. Yeah, I see what you just did.
• 14:29
But that is tentatively scheduled for August 22nd, which would be a Lunds Incorporated/- It'll be fucked by then... fucked thing. It's a Monday. [laughs] Is it? I don't know. Whatever, it's in that ballpark.
• 14:40
The reason why I know it's a Monday- Monday, Monday... is 'cause that's... Can you help me out? Who's playing at Tur- at, uh... It's, it's, uh- Peter Hook and the Light Thank you. Good lord.
• 14:49
So maybe it's the 20, I don't know. But it's gonna be- [laughs] It's not just an o- it's not just an over and back thing. This is a longer, a longer- Yeah... cruise and a, a ride- Yeah... up north of, uh- Ludington...
• 15:00
Ludington, which we haven't done- Ludington is pretty damn cool... for a long time, so. That's where the, uh, Tom Julio is retired to. [laughs] Well, maybe we can go up and knock on his door. No, you can't. I tried.
• 15:11
I hunted him down. [laughs] He, yeah, he's like a fucking Sasquatch over there. Tom Julio. [laughs] You, I, I'm pretty sure you've probably met him too, man, but eh.
• 15:22
I think we need a- He actually scrubbed himself of- I think we need a jingle here somewhere... no, he, like, has scrubbed himself of his social media presence. I don't blame him- If I look him-... for one minute.
• 15:32
Well, it's amazing that he was able to. I mean, I lo- I've looked up, like, how he spells his name and his, you know, uh, radio career footprint. Sh... Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone. I, I- Awesome.
• 15:48
And I'm just like, "Wow"... I would like to scrub my social media- It's pretty impressive... I gotta use stupid WhatsApp now. So now I got four ways to message people, plus email, plus phone call, plus...
• 15:58
It's like, uh- Yeah... it never ends. I just- It does not... Signal. Signal... Signal, you know, Messenger. What? It just, it's getting outta hand.
• 16:08
[laughs] So, well, some of the people that we are working with are in, on- Telegram... on the other side of the world. Um, so apparently WhatsApp is the way you do that.
• 16:16
I just- It's when you wrap around- I just don't-... the timeline... I don't need another one of these, and I don't trust any of 'em except r- Signal I kind of am still feeling pretty good about.
• 16:25
It's been, yeah, it's been around for a bit. A lot of folks trust it quite a bit. That's why the FBI set it up. [laughs] That's why I send everyone dick pics with it. [laughs] I wish I had a jingle on here.
• 16:39
I don't know what this- A jingle jangle... what's this thing? [laughing] Oh, that, well, actually, that's kind of appropriate because I was gonna go into the Crypto Minute, and they're laughing at us.
• 16:48
'Cause you know why? 'Cause we haven't got our bike parts yet. Well, it says, it says a shipment is on the way, but when you go to track, it still says label created- Yeah, yeah... and there's nothing more. Yeah.
• 16:56
I'm like, "Aha, I see how they've got us." Yeah. We're, we're befuckled. They made a [laughs] label and they haven't put it on a box yet.
• 17:04
So maybe it's on its way, though, 'cause it's coming from overseas there somewhere. [laughs] Tony's rolling his eyes. Well, it, yeah, yeah. Oh, boy. Well- I just, you know- Yeah, so that's, you know...
• 17:19
I guess when it gets here, the thing is is I've been kinda tracking it now, and there's so many out there, we're gonna... It's gonna take a year to pay for itself now, not a month. I'm okay with that. Yeah.
• 17:29
Well, so it'd be still a good payback if you get it over the year period. Well- I more just wanna have it- Whenever it fucking shows up... and play with it since I paid for it [laughs] Right.
• 17:39
Got a thousand bucks into this, man. Yeah. Well, we can- That's a drivetrain. Do you need a drivetrain? No, but that is- I want a drivetrain... a fucking drivetrain.
• 17:47
Speaking of drivetrains, aren't you getting rid of your car? [laughs] No. I want a drivetrain. I got a little G&R-ing. You really hope so. You wouldn't want the- I got that... you know.
• 17:54
[laughs] I did One of the rarest cars ever made. The only production folding hardtop convertible with a sunroof. Yeah, no, I don't at all want that car. Okay. Well, yeah. But somebody might. No. Damn it.
• 18:11
Tell him what it is, Tony. It's a Volkswagen EOS with 109,000 miles. Tell him how much people are getting for those things these days, 'cause fuck- It's fucking dumb. People are-...
• 18:19
like, fricking [laughs] people are spending a lot of money on any kind of vehicles these days... well, 2013s are selling for almost 20 grand, and my vi- my model is selling for 10 to 12, which is just dumb.
• 18:32
You don't pay that for a car that old. I mean, it's not collector's edition yet. Mine is really rare, I, I will admit, 'cause it's a manual transmission in the United States. But, you know... Okay.
• 18:47
Not usually a selling point. Well- Well- f- In the Berger household, it kind of is... well, it is also in the car enthusiast, you know, category. For sure. Of the household.
• 18:57
[laughs] You know, I can merge into traffic at 100 miles an hour without thinking twice. [laughs] You can do that in a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan as well. Yeah, but- [laughs]
• 19:11
I always like to be going faster than traffic when I enter the freeway. I do too. Oh, yeah. That's my, that's my goal. Yeah, you gotta be... I mean, at least it gives you a chance to merge two different times.
• 19:20
See, the, the problem with the Eos is because it was very, you know, it... It's a shame Sam, Strongman Sam doesn't listen, because he always insults my Eos 'cause it's a woman's car, which it is. Is that the Fiat?
• 19:33
But, but, uh, no, it's the Volkswagen. And the whole deal with that thing, though, is it- [laughs] They intentionally make it, like, super quiet.
• 19:42
So you're going 85 miles an hour in fourth gear, you're spinning four grand, and you can't even hear the motor. It's like, well, this is the dumbest thing in the world. 'Cause they threw a sewing machine under the hood.
• 19:53
Well, they dampened it so much that you can't hear the motor to sh- I should be in fifth or at least, you know, fifth or maybe sixth, you know, and just cruising, getting, you know.
• 20:03
But, but yeah, i- it's just a weird, weird scenario. To have a comfortable drive [laughs] and this kind of thing, you know? And it's, yeah, it is, the thing is it's actually a really nice ride.
• 20:11
Like, I, I'm used to discomfort for the long haul. You know? But, but it's, it'll, it'll get out of its own way. It'll do 145 miles an hour top speed, I think. And the reason why you're getting rid of it?
• 20:22
Uh, my daughter turned 16. [laughs] No 16-year-old should ever have a car that goes 145. [laughs] No, they should not. Let... A lot of people do, though, let their kids have cars that go- Yeah... go 145. Yes, yes.
• 20:34
But no, it has to- No, it's, it- Crazy people. To, you know, it, it- Yes. It, it is, like, uh, just recent one-year anniversary of that horrible- Oh, right... uh, Burlie explosion.
• 20:45
Uh, I know, 'cause they did the burnouts all this weekend. Yeah. Until it just- In, oh, in honor of the dead people? Yeah. Yes. Which was f- which was kind of- Which I knew was gonna happen...
• 20:53
which was not only hilarious, but- They were like, "Oh, I hope that doesn't happen." I'm going like, "Of course they're gonna fucking do it." Since I live a block away- Yeah...
• 20:59
this dude, like, pulled his car up, got out of his car, started walking to where the shit was going down. A cop goes through, lights blaring, you know, SUV. The dude doesn't even break stride.
• 21:13
He turns around and [laughs] walks right back to his car. [laughs] Gets in and drives away. [laughs] And like, he didn't even hesitate for, like, "Oh, hell no, I'm out of here."
• 21:24
And yeah, there, there was, like, I don't know- Yeah... 28 candles and- Of course, yeah... I mean, these guys- I mean, but yeah, it was a, it, it was a touchstone... these guys wrapped themselves around a tree.
• 21:33
It was a touchstone. I'm sorry. Yeah. Yeah. You know? It was a touchstone. They were driving like- It was a one-year, one-year anniversary... yeah, it was, but they were driving like idiots- Yes, I know... in a city,
• 21:40
