- 0:07Welcome back to another edition of the Justin Time podcast.
- 0:10I'm your host Justin, and got will here with.
- 0:12Us the guy. Always a pleasure.
- 0:14Once again, always a pleasure. You've been knocking them back
- 0:17lately, brother. Yeah, we have on the table.
- 0:20I'll let y'all know, I set a New Year's resolution goal for this
- 0:24podcast to hit 46 episodes and in season 2 alone this is going
- 0:32to be the 35th. Like, you know, one thing I
- 0:36appreciate about Justin, guys, just like, you know, just
- 0:39visionary for this brand. You know, you've been thinking
- 0:41about this for quite some time. We had a great time with it last
- 0:44year. Really baseball season was well,
- 0:46first of all, we go back and take it back real quick to last
- 0:49summer. We was talking about Skid
- 0:50Burton's book. So it was just a book about Skid
- 0:53Burton, but just started from there.
- 0:55Talk about our high school days. They really got in the football.
- 0:59We really kicked in another gear with baseball seasons, you know,
- 1:02with the polls and stuff like that.
- 1:03So posting on Reddit, you know, just but we've been on the tear
- 1:07this summer. Not the brag, but we've been on
- 1:09the tear. Just trying to get the pre this
- 1:11early predictions out. Like I said, you know, take it,
- 1:14take it with like a grain of salt with the the predictions
- 1:17because I mean, there's only so much you can know in the summer,
- 1:20But you know, we've been trying to get you guys content.
- 1:22Yeah. Look, we're going in with that
- 1:24winners, that winners mindset. If everybody can't say this.
- 1:29You know, we don't have the loser mentality.
- 1:33Losing mentality is some of these.
- 1:35Everybody can't relate the grief.
- 1:37You know these Razorbacks? These Razorbacks have.
- 1:41Woo pig. Suey woo pig.
- 1:45The. Loser mentality The amount of
- 1:48the amount of emotional damage these people have felt.
- 1:51Over the years, it hurt. It's a long every like, it's not
- 1:58just football, it's along the whole athletics department that
- 2:02they get crushed every seat, every seems like every year.
- 2:05Yeah, it's it's so like I, I feel for the because it's like,
- 2:08bro, that nothing, you know, we talk about like a couple of
- 2:11examples I bring up with the the football program in the 2006
- 2:15season, 2011 season, 2006, they had an all like a like a
- 2:19gauntlet of schedule. They play in USC or your
- 2:21movement when they went to the national championship, they
- 2:24played LSU, they played LSU Florida and the conference NSC
- 2:27title game was for the one that O six title.
- 2:30You know they, they went tenant for that year because they lost
- 2:33in the bowl game to 2011 Arkansas.
- 2:36That was like the best Arkansas team I've ever I've ever seen.
- 2:40But they went tenant. They went 11 and two that year.
- 2:432 losses came to versus Bama and LSU on the road at Arkansas was
- 2:49#3 in the country that year when they came to us in the final
- 2:52game of the season. Yeah, look, the 2007 season.
- 2:58Yeah, epic game. They gave their fans hope.
- 3:02They came to Death Valley, they beat the would be national
- 3:05champions. Yes.
- 3:07And I walked out of there and I just remember this guy saying,
- 3:10well, I can sell my Sugar Bowl tickets.
- 3:13And I think he immediately regretted it.
- 3:15You said. You know so and I saw something
- 3:22earlier before we do Speaking of media week, they announced some
- 3:29rule changes. One significant is the targeting
- 3:33penalty for your first offense. You just disqualified for the
- 3:39rest of the game, but no more sitting out for the first half
- 3:43of the next game. Now, if they actually called
- 3:47this on some certain people, you know, like AL that like
- 3:51elephants and have Crimson as their color, this is where it
- 3:57gets iffy for you because second offense is disqualified for the
- 4:01rest of the current game plus the first half of the next game.
- 4:06And I think that goes for doesn't matter if it's like the
- 4:09first half. I think it's at any point in the
- 4:11game if you get called for targeting as your second time.
- 4:16Yeah, it's a one year. I mean, not a one year A1 game
- 4:20suspension rules. You're out for the rest of that
- 4:22game and then you serve the first half of the next game.
- 4:26Yeah, that's right. Regardless of when it happens,
- 4:29then the third and more offense is you disqualify for the rest
- 4:33of the current game plus one full game suspension following
- 4:36the game. That's going to be huge.
- 4:39I'm with you there, man. Just you crack it down on the
- 4:42safety continuously. The the the thing that we always
- 4:45get tricky with this, it's like, is it intentional?
- 4:47Like you know the 10 of the person you know?
- 4:50I know I know more hints and vicious than others, but like
- 4:54sometimes you just try to make a a great play on the ball and the
- 4:57body just contours in a different way.
- 5:00That's what it's tricky. Here's my issue with it.
- 5:03OK. Yeah.
- 5:06It's the lack of consistency across the board.
- 5:08This is. What is targeting and what is
- 5:12not? It's it's always the like that's
- 5:14the all it, it's always going to come back to it.
- 5:17You could make the rules. I mean, you, you have a more
- 5:19structure with the rules is great, but just it's always
- 5:22going to come back to the to the the consistency.
- 5:24That's the. That's the bottom line.
- 5:26And to me, I think what the NCAA needs to do with this, I know
- 5:31we're looking at this. This is just to know it's a
- 5:33whole thing. I read it right.
- 5:34Yeah, it's all NCAA approves changes to targeting suspension
- 5:38in one year trial. So it's a one year trial.
- 5:41The rules on targeting can't be up to officiating.
- 5:45In the officials interpretation of the rule, it needs to be a
- 5:48clear black and white. You lower the crown of your
- 5:51helmet and you hit a guy and you launch automatic.
- 5:56Automatic. I'm good with going to video
- 6:01review on some of those Bang Bang plays where intent isn't
- 6:05clear. And I am good with it being an
- 6:09unnecessary roughness penalty, right?
- 6:13But if it's clear intent and it is clear lunging and your head,
- 6:19your body is parallel, when you go to hit that and your head is
- 6:23down like this and you can see this.
- 6:25Yeah. That should be targeting every
- 6:27single time. I don't care.
- 6:29You know, and the problem with the rule is you have officiate
- 6:34officials and officiating who I bring up the hit from a couple
- 6:41of years ago on Jaden Daniels from Alabama where it was a no
- 6:44call. You know, the one where they
- 6:47gave the kid a concussion. That was clear targeting.
- 6:51No flag was thrown. It was up to officiating crews,
- 6:55who were probably all born in Alabama and Alabama fans up to
- 6:59that officiating crew to determine if that was targeting
- 7:02or not. When?
- 7:04Not to mention that kid just had a history of being a dirty
- 7:07player. And I'm like, I'm good you, but
- 7:09that's another thing because I like the NFL with Montez
- 7:12Burfict, like he had a bad reputation, but just like that's
- 7:15just the NFL example, but just going to college like he's just
- 7:18that's another thing you got to watch out for because like, and
- 7:22that's and that's the the positive.
- 7:23I think one of the positive with like the a more structural rule
- 7:27adjustment because like you cracked down on the fools,
- 7:29there's from the guys who may have the ill intentions and just
- 7:33who like you got it. You have to lay down the law in
- 7:35some fashion. Yeah, and look, I'm not picking
- 7:39on the kid because he's an Alabama player.
- 7:43I'm picking on him specifically because after that hit came out
- 7:47against Jayden Daniels, there was a video montage of five
- 7:51other plays against five different teams where he went
- 7:56after the quarterback and he took the dudes head by the face
- 7:58mask and the helmet was like this on the kids head, you know,
- 8:05or late, blatant, late hits on him, you know, it was just
- 8:10blatant to me. He was a dirty player, you know,
- 8:13but officiating, they didn't see it as targeting, so they didn't
- 8:17call it, you know, if you have a black and white targeting rule
- 8:22because that's where they're going to get in trouble with
- 8:23this year long trial. Yeah, you're going.
- 8:27To have a kid who's been clean all season and goes down the
- 8:31field and puts a hit on somebody and either is in a rough spot
- 8:35with body angle and stuff. And those officials are going to
- 8:38call in for targeting. It's going to go to review,
- 8:41They're going to uphold it. And then that kids going to have
- 8:43to sit out, you know? Yeah.
- 8:44But that's all it come down to interpretation and it considers
- 8:48to that's that's what the bottom line is always going to be.
- 8:53Yeah, no, you have put something else as well.
- 8:57Yeah, so this isn't really a big one, but offensive pass
- 9:02interference is just going to match the NFL rules, is not
- 9:06going to be 15 yards anymore, It's going to be a 10 yard
- 9:08penalty. I know what was interesting when
- 9:10you put it, you know the review process.
- 9:12The conferences can initiate an appeal for a second targeting
- 9:15penalty to the national coordinator of officials via
- 9:18video review. Now the thing, the key phrasing
- 9:22that for me is conferences. One thing I always looked at
- 9:24with NCAA, it's like brother, like you need to be the
- 9:27governing body for every league. Exactly.
- 9:30So just like with SCT doing one thing, this is a penalty like a
- 9:35tonic penalty for this conference, but that that
- 9:38conference is a season tonic. I think that happened to us
- 9:40years ago with Brad Wing against Florida where he had he had
- 9:43taunted, but like they call it back and they're like at another
- 9:46conference that that week or so later or maybe the same week, it
- 9:49was like it was fine. It's just.
- 9:51I'll bring up a more recent one. You know, in that conference
- 9:55that will remain unnamed, where Texas and Oklahoma held from.
- 10:00This used to be a penalty. Yes.
- 10:03And when Texas joined the SEC, you know, the Superior
- 10:08conference, Yeah. Come on now.
- 10:12They got mad when the first SEC game a big play got put on and
- 10:18they were running. The players for the other team
- 10:20were running around. Now that up and down the
- 10:22sideline going like this too, and they pitched a fit.
- 10:26That shouldn't be a penalty. They should be a penalty.
- 10:29Dude, this is the SEC. If you can't handle it, go go
- 10:32back to where you came from. Yeah, like just I don't even
- 10:34think that's derogatory or, you know, just inflammatory, like
- 10:38the horns down thing. Like I mean, even if LSU had a
- 10:40symbol like that, I don't care if you flip it around like that
- 10:44doesn't bother me just because that's just.
- 10:46There's far more severe stuff like you had just said with the
- 10:49target, there's far more severe stuff throwing trash onto the
- 10:52field. Like brother, let's forget the
- 10:54play. Like you talk about safety and
- 10:56if. You're a team.
- 10:57If you're a football team has to put a net around your whole
- 11:01stadium, you've got far bigger problems than somebody go out
- 11:05like this. Exactly.
- 11:07I mean. But you know, we did an episode
- 11:10on Texas already. We're back to that loser men,
- 11:13the loser mentality as Coach Silverfield.
- 11:16Put it to rid. Rid themselves of it, maybe.
- 11:19Yeah. He wants to seek to reverse
- 11:21Arkansas's losing mentality. You know, and I've got to.
- 11:25I'll give it to him. Yeah.
- 11:28Yeah. The football program has been
- 11:29circling the can for a long time.
- 11:32Yeah. But last year, what just, you
- 11:37know, it kind of irked me with all of these coaching changes.
- 11:41I don't think Pittman was a bad coach.
- 11:42Yeah, I don't either. And I think he loved the
- 11:44University of Arkansas. But when you fireman, you don't
- 11:49go in the firing press conference and say we didn't
- 11:53give him enough resources to succeed.
- 11:55That is, that was so detrimental.
- 11:58I remembered last. I'm like, brother, you mean to
- 12:01tell me you were a state that features Walmart and Tyson?
- 12:04Chicken and you are the first one, not only Walmart, but you
- 12:08are the first one to slap Walmart sponsorship on your
- 12:11field as soon as the ink dried on that.
- 12:12Contract they're from Walmart is both raised in Arkansas.
- 12:15Yeah, there's no excuse. To you Arkansas as soon as the
- 12:19ink drive on sponsorships being able to be put on the field in
- 12:24the patches on the jerk players jersey as soon as the ink before
- 12:28the ink even dried, Arkansas was the first one to have Walmart on
- 12:33New Jersey. 'S stadium.
- 12:36The stadium and you're going to sit there and say that your
- 12:39coach, your pass coach, didn't succeed because you didn't give
- 12:42him enough resources. But what do you mean you didn't
- 12:46give me enough resources? That's the part that that's the
- 12:48part of college sports. Yeah, like how do you not give
- 12:52him enough resources? You know, I was looking at this
- 12:55article, you know, from July 23rd, Coach Ryan Silverfield was
- 12:58heading to the introduction news conference in Arkansas when he
- 13:01asked a simple question. Can we turn some lights on?
- 13:05The surprising answer, Silverville, Silverville said
- 13:08was they are on. So from dark dank hallways to a
- 13:13way room, they hadn't got any new dumbbells in three decades.
- 13:16Think about bro, did you just hear from dark dank hallways to
- 13:20a weight room that hadn't gotten new dumbbells in nearly 3
- 13:24decades? That is inexcusable.
- 13:27That is almost as old as we are. They're using 90s equipment and
- 13:32playing 90s ball in 2026. But you but you won't be taking
- 13:37seriously. I can't take you seriously.
- 13:39I'm sorry. Good.
- 13:42I just I just read. I said my gosh, that is.
- 13:45That is, they should be ashamed of themselves.
- 13:47They should be, but, and you're going to actually say that while
- 13:50you're firing the man? We didn't give him the resources
- 13:52he needed to succeed. So how do you expect to hire
- 13:55coaches moving forward? Yeah, now wonder your whole
- 13:58athletic department has just been one emotional damage.
- 14:01I bet the therapy bills in Arkansas through the roof.
- 14:06I mean, thank, thank God they have a I mean, now they've been
- 14:08historic possessor with basketball, not to the level of
- 14:11many other schools, but they won a national championship in
- 14:13basketball in the 90s and another Richardson.
- 14:15But their their prize position right now is really the baseball
- 14:17program. That's their, that's their,
- 14:19that's their, that's their golden egg.
- 14:22And they haven't crossed that finish line yet.
- 14:26Yes, unfortunately not for them. They were, unfortunately a wide
- 14:30ball. Yeah, that's I'd be sick.
- 14:33There away from winning it in 18, but you know, they choke.
- 14:38You know, we're talking about football now and let's close
- 14:42this thing out with them on their prediction.
- 14:47So North Alabama at 3:15 on September 5th, I'm going to give
- 14:52them a win. You know you want to get rid of
- 14:54the losing mentality in Arkansas.
- 14:57The 915 game at Utah in the 12th is a huge first step.
- 15:02Yes, big time. You know, so I'll be generous
- 15:07and give you a win at Utah. The The thing is like I was that
- 15:12going to Utah is a tough matchup for anybody we've seen the last
- 15:15couple years. But the only reason I'm going to
- 15:17give Arkansas the win today is because, you know, Kyle Windham
- 15:21is no longer the coach there. So they got a new coach.
- 15:23So like, I'm not sure their roster.
- 15:25So for the Utah fans, you know, our apology, My apologies, but
- 15:29just only because it's a late start, granted, but only because
- 15:34you have a new coaching staff. Tulina.
- 15:37So I'll go 2 and one because they're going to get beat by
- 15:40Georgia at 11. AM they will.
- 15:42I'll give them the win at versus Tulsa. 3:00 and 1:00.
- 15:47Go 3 and two Texas AM, you know. Yep, three and three versus
- 15:52Tennessee. 3:00 and 3:00. Four and three versus Bandy.
- 15:58Give him a. Win might go might go 3 and 4.
- 16:03Well, I was going to even it out four and four at Missouri versus
- 16:07Missouri. OK.
- 16:10With me to a four or four in Missouri to even out, yeah.
- 16:13Five and four versus Auburn. Yeah. 5:00 and 4:00.
- 16:17I might be contradicting myself for that.
- 16:19I don't remember what I said for the Auburn prediction.
- 16:21Me neither. Well, that is prediction. 5:00
- 16:25and 5:00. South Carolina.
- 16:28South Carolina Yep, 5 and 6 versus Texas and five and seven
- 16:33LSU and. Which totally, totally in
- 16:36agreement with you. 5 or 7, I think that's even then that's
- 16:41like kind of pushing it. Yeah, like it's a tough
- 16:44congressman. I'm I'm looking at, you know,
- 16:46just our all time record against Arkestra is one of our more
- 16:50comfortable victories, coverable series.
- 16:52We lead the all time series 44 to 24 to 2 and you know, 2 has
- 16:57been vacated, but we are on the current 4 game-winning streak.
- 17:00Yeah. So I think the last time we lost
- 17:03was 20/21 at 2020. Let me.
- 17:06Yeah, I think so. Let me pull up the full games
- 17:09list. So the last time they beat us
- 17:12was in 20/21/16 to 13. Yeah, that was nuts.
- 17:15His first official start as a tiger.
- 17:18By 21, yeah. What time?
- 17:21They gave us a huge run for bars, careless first year in
- 17:242022. We did, we we skated out there.
- 17:27But when it was a cold game. But I.
- 17:29Came off an emotional game. Yeah, that was an emotional trap
- 17:32game after the win at Alabama. And if it wasn't been for
- 17:36Harold? Perkins, but he's saving the
- 17:38day. Yeah, freshman saving the day.
- 17:41That's where the legend, the myth in the legend started for
- 17:44him. Then he got hurt and it just
- 17:47was. They never put him in the right
- 17:48spot. And then like going to 2023, I
- 17:51remember going to that game that was Jayden Daniels High of the
- 17:54year. Of course, I remember going to
- 17:55that game still early in the year and people with they had US
- 17:59winning by 18 points. I said you got to be kid.
- 18:02That is so steep. I don't care how bad they are.
- 18:06It's like, listen, I said going to the game, it's going to be a
- 18:09single digit game is going to be coming out to the final
- 18:12possession, which it did. And like I said, they're going
- 18:14to. If we were going to win by
- 18:15double digits, it'll be 10, maybe 12 points, which I didn't
- 18:19expect at all out there. It's going to be A1 possession
- 18:20game. We go in by the final
- 18:22possession, which we did. Yeah.
- 18:24And I mean, just looking at it, you know, from it's been weird
- 18:29the last couple of years to say, oh, Arkansas is in the early
- 18:34part of the season because growing up it was always Black
- 18:38Friday. Yeah, yeah, it's been different
- 18:41the last. Game of the season, you know,
- 18:42you look for who's our new coach, you know, and it was
- 18:46always the Arkansas game and times before, you know, we
- 18:52played Arkansas and then we decided you got the announcement
- 18:55on who was the head coach. It's good to have them back at
- 18:59the last game of the season, yeah, but I don't have much more
- 19:04to say about Arkansas. Do you?
- 19:07Yeah, I'm good, pretty much. I was going to say just like,
- 19:10you know, I know many LSU fans don't give the credit or no
- 19:14recognize as a rivalry. I always feel like it is a
- 19:17rivalry because I always say if your game, if your annual
- 19:20opponent has both a name and a trophy, it's thing to say that
- 19:25you're a rival. Yeah, I'm not saying it's our
- 19:27most highest profile, iconic rival, but it's you have a name,
- 19:31Battle of the Golden Boot, you have a name and a trophy.
- 19:34Yeah. And I will say it's.
- 19:35Famous to you? I will say this, it is good to
- 19:38finish the year with a team that we have a trophy for.
- 19:42Yes, that makes that's a great point.
- 19:44But with them adding Tulane on the schedule for a home and home
- 19:49in upcoming seasons, yeah, I wouldn't mind if we played
- 19:54canceled out one of those little rental win teams at the
- 19:57beginning of the season. And went back to playing Tulane
- 20:03every year for Thanksgiving. Yeah, that makes sense for that.
- 20:09I think that'll just be a, you know, more of a rivalry, more of
- 20:15a historical big game. You know, just look at the
- 20:20crowds when you play like a team like Southern, which is coming
- 20:24up and I'm dreading that game. I'm going to take an Uber to
- 20:26that game because I remember the first time we played them in
- 20:30Tiger Stadium, it was like getting out for the guard.
- 20:34It took me longer to get home from the Southern LSU football
- 20:36game that it did for me to get home from the Garth Brooks
- 20:40concert the year before. Oh.
- 20:41My gosh, yes. Yeah.
- 20:45That's like especially when it's blowouts, you just got to get
- 20:47out in about third quarter. Sad thing is I left in the third
- 20:50quarter in the traffic was still so bad because the game was so
- 20:54bad. Everybody was leaving at the
- 20:55same time. Yeah.
- 20:57Yeah, but that'll do it from us, please like, subscribe, share,
- 21:03set your notifications for both Spotify and YouTube.
- 21:08We drop every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 AM.
- 21:11Have a great day, a great night, whatever you do, just have a
- 21:14great one and we'll see y'all next time later.
