Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: One of the biggest challenges, but also one of the biggest opportunities that we have as writers today, is that we have a lot of voices to choose from.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: We have a lot of people that we can follow.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: We have a lot of podcasters, authors, content creators, and so many others that can be models for the kind of author business that we want to develop.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Now the good thing, again, is that we have lots of lots of opportunities, lots of models, we have lots of possibilities and people who are doing cool things.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But on the flip side of that, it also can be really paralyzing.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And I know I have gotten to the place at times where I've been following, you know, 10 or 15 or 20 different authors and really following their career closely and buying their books and watching TED Talks and listening to their podcasts and everything.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And it can get a little bit overwhelming.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So what I have done is I have tried to tried to silence most of that.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, I still follow a lot of people, but in terms of who I really am trying to model my business on, the person that I'm following really closely these days is Ryan Holliday.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: He's the author of great books like Ego is the Enemy, The Obstacle is the Way, Stillness is the Key, The Daily Stoic, and a few others.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: He also has a great podcast called The Daily Stoic, as well as a membership community.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And he does ghostwriting and marketing work for clients.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So in many ways, he's he is the kind of business that I would like to eventually build.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I've taken a few small steps to get there, but but he really does a lot of things that I enjoy.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: He does a variety of things, and I I love him as a writer.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: He's such a great writer and a communicator.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So that's who I'm that's like the primary person that I'm following these days in terms of what I'm trying to build.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Now my question to you is who is someone who has produced the things that you want to build?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Who is someone that you want to follow and model in the kind of author business or kind of author platform that you're building?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: You can't follow everybody, but it is really, really helpful if you choose one, maybe two people who you look at their stuff and you go, you know, they're building the kind of thing that I want to build.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So I would challenge you to think about that really carefully and then just start looking at what they do and trying to reverse engineer the things that they have done.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: For me, that's been a really helpful strategy, and I think it may be for you as well.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: All right, I will see you in the next episode.
