- 1:17Speaker 1: there's something for you at philhenryshow.com, the greatest value online
- 1:22Speaker 1: other than porn.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Hello, everybody.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Welcome to today's featured Radio Archive Hour. It's Ted Bell,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and this is Ted Bell from February of 2003. Now,
- 1:32Speaker 1: something very tragic had happened that week. It was the
- 1:35Speaker 1: Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. Ted Bell is on our show,
- 1:37Speaker 1: of course, you know, wanting to be very kind and sensitive,
- 1:41Speaker 1: but really, what's he on for? Because he's upset that
- 1:43Speaker 1: he lost business. Everybody was at home watching the news,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and they didn't come into Ted's at Beverly Hills, his
- 1:47Speaker 1: new opening in, I think it was Walnut Creek, California.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So he wants the government to reimburse him for his
- 1:53Speaker 1: lost business. And it gets weirder from there. Ted Bell,
- 1:58Speaker 1: all cranky and upset that he lost business during the
- 2:02Speaker 1: Columbia disaster news cycle.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Ted's of Beverly Hills Steakhouse, come on down.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Hey, come on down to Ted's of Beverly Hills We've
- 2:15Speaker 3: got a new opening in Walnut Creek, California We've got
- 2:17Speaker 3: that steak sandwich, great for lunch Our businessman special We
- 2:21Speaker 3: open at 11 o'clock for lunch every day at Ted's
- 2:23Speaker 3: of Beverly Hills.
- 2:24Speaker 5: We're at Ted's We want to put our meat in
- 2:27Speaker 5: your mouth Ted.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You're not at your restaurant, were you at Norm's?
- 2:32Speaker 3: I'm actually at a business meeting at Norm's Coffee Shop
- 2:35Speaker 3: in Hollywood Yes, I did, Phil.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Ted, we were talking about the opening of your new
- 2:39Speaker 4: Ted's at Beverly Hills restaurant in Walnut Creek, California on Saturday.
- 2:44Speaker 2: How did that go?
- 2:45Speaker 3: Phil, I want you to understand that I have the
- 2:49Speaker 3: greatest sympathy for the people, the family members, and the
- 2:53Speaker 3: crew members of the shuttle. And I think it was
- 2:58Speaker 3: the Challenger.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It was the Columbia.
- 3:01Speaker 3: The Columbia. I have the greatest sympathy for those individuals who...
- 3:06Speaker 3: perished on that flight. But Saturday was the day in
- 3:10Speaker 3: which I was opening a brand-new restaurant in Walnut Creek,
- 3:12Speaker 3: the Ted's of Beverly Hills in Walnut Creek. This would
- 3:14Speaker 3: be our third location, Phil. We opened our Georgetown Ted's
- 3:18Speaker 3: of Beverly Hills in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., back in September.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yes, I recall that.
- 3:24Speaker 3: We did not have a good day on Saturday. It
- 3:26Speaker 3: was not brisk, business was way off.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Okay, then you opened Saturday.
- 3:31Speaker 3: That's what I'm talking about. We waited until after Super
- 3:34Speaker 3: Bowl week.
- 3:36Speaker 2: All right, so this was this past Saturday.
- 3:37Speaker 3: That is correct. We waited for a weekend when people
- 3:39Speaker 3: would want to go out to dinner. The holidays have
- 3:41Speaker 3: died down. Valentine's Day is coming up. So it was
- 3:45Speaker 3: a perfect weekend.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Well, tell me how things went. And you mentioned the shuttle.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Are you talking about the fact that people were watching
- 3:52Speaker 4: the news?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Well, we opened at about 11 o'clock our time. We
- 3:56Speaker 3: were getting ready for the lunch rush. And this was
- 3:59Speaker 3: our grand opening on Saturday. I had the TV on
- 4:02Speaker 3: in the bar. and I was wiping down some glasses,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and on comes CBS News. And they report that the
- 4:10Speaker 3: shuttle has blown up, which, of course, that's what it was.
- 4:14Speaker 3: It was a terrible disaster, and I don't think any
- 4:17Speaker 3: more about it. And we opened our doors at 11.30. Now,
- 4:19Speaker 3: we advertised on your show. We did print advertising. We
- 4:22Speaker 3: did flyers. We did mail-outs. Well, 11.30 turns to noon.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Noon turns to 1.00. And we just did not get
- 4:30Speaker 3: the business we wanted filled. It was a tragic day,
- 4:34Speaker 3: of course, for America, but it was also not a
- 4:37Speaker 3: good day for Ted's at Beverly Hills. This is the
- 4:39Speaker 3: third one that we've opened up.
- 4:40Speaker 2: What was business down by? What's typical?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Well, we were off 87% of what we expected.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Wow. That's a hit.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a sad day. It's a sad day
- 4:51Speaker 3: for America. I want you to understand that I appreciate
- 4:54Speaker 3: the shuttle disaster, but I also am hoping that you appreciate... Well.
- 4:58Speaker 4: The business was off for you. It was a grand
- 5:00Speaker 4: opening of a new restaurant. Now, it was a tough day.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Saturday was a tough news day. The Columbia was obviously,
- 5:09Speaker 4: the news about the Columbia was on TV, so I
- 5:10Speaker 4: think people were around television sets. And I heard, if
- 5:13Speaker 4: you want to know something, Ted, I heard that retail
- 5:16Speaker 4: business all over the country was off on Saturday.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Well, I understand that, and I certainly appreciate that people
- 5:21Speaker 3: up to a point, up to a point, want to
- 5:25Speaker 3: watch the news about the shuttle, but my question is this,
- 5:27Speaker 3: and I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds, and I
- 5:30Speaker 3: ask it with the greatest of sensitivity, and I want
- 5:32Speaker 3: to ask your listeners, how much is too much? Okay?
- 5:37Speaker 3: And at what point does the viewer have the responsibility
- 5:39Speaker 3: to say, you know what, I've had enough, I'm turning
- 5:41Speaker 3: it off, I'm going out, and I'm going to get
- 5:43Speaker 3: a life, as opposed to sit here and over and
- 5:47Speaker 3: over and over again watch this shuttle this spaceship get
- 5:53Speaker 3: blown up. Ted's at Beverly Hills is having a grand opening,
- 5:59Speaker 3: and people could have come out for that, but that
- 6:01Speaker 3: didn't happen, and I've got to ask myself why.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Well, the Columbia story is a compelling story. It's a
- 6:06Speaker 4: story of people as well as our space program.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw the video, Phil, over and over again.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Every time I turn the TV on Saturday, I see
- 6:14Speaker 3: this video, and I've got to ask you, when does
- 6:16Speaker 3: it stop? And I've got a theory.
- 6:19Speaker 4: All right, now, I'm going to ask you. You're upset
- 6:22Speaker 4: that your business is off.
- 6:23Speaker 2: You're upset.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Well, don't paint me as insensitive to what happened. Look,
- 6:28Speaker 3: ever since 9-11, we have become crazy for this kind
- 6:31Speaker 3: of stuff. We can't get enough of things exploding and
- 6:34Speaker 3: collapsing and blowing to bits. We love to see... Instead
- 6:38Speaker 3: of saying, I'm not going to get sucked in by this,
- 6:40Speaker 3: the American people are brainwashed. And the American people will
- 6:45Speaker 3: sit with their thumb in their mouth... watching it over
- 6:49Speaker 3: and over and over again, and I'm sitting on a
- 6:52Speaker 3: bar stool at a brand new Ted's in Beverly Hills
- 6:55Speaker 3: in Walnut Creek, wiping down glasses, and our business is
- 7:00Speaker 3: off 87%. I have to ask the American people, when
- 7:03Speaker 3: are you going to get a life? When are you
- 7:04Speaker 3: going to stop having an addiction to these images?
- 7:09Speaker 4: Okay, I'm going to give our phone number 1-800-449-8686, and
- 7:12Speaker 4: I'm going to disagree.
- 7:14Speaker 2: With you, too.
- 7:14Speaker 3: That's fine, Phil.
- 7:16Speaker 2: It just, to me... is the wrong read on this. 1-800-449-8686.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Ted Bell from Ted's of Beverly Hills is on, talking
- 7:23Speaker 4: about what he thinks is America's addiction to these horrific
- 7:27Speaker 4: images of Trade Center buildings collapsing and shuttles exploding.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Your business was off on Saturday.
- 7:35Speaker 4: The opening of your restaurant was off on Saturday because
- 7:37Speaker 4: it was an unusual news day filled with these images
- 7:41Speaker 4: of the Columbia and the things that happened. You seem
- 7:46Speaker 4: to be, and correct me if I'm reading this wrong, Ted,
- 7:48Speaker 4: you seem to be blaming the American people for your
- 7:51Speaker 4: business being off like it's something they could have helped.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I'm not disagreeing. It is something they could have helped,
- 7:57Speaker 4: but you're thinking it's wrong that they weren't there.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Well, obviously it's something they could help. And yes, I
- 8:02Speaker 3: think it's wrong when you sit for hours on end,
- 8:06Speaker 3: scratching your rear end, moseying over to the icebox to
- 8:11Speaker 3: get a bologna sandwich, when you could be at my restaurant...
- 8:14Speaker 3: We had a grand opening. We have the slow-roasted prime
- 8:18Speaker 3: rib all day. We had a tremendous selection of different
- 8:24Speaker 3: steaks that we were rolling out, and, of course, our
- 8:26Speaker 3: side dishes, the succotash, your choice. All of these things
- 8:30Speaker 3: were there. And nobody came to our restaurant because they
- 8:33Speaker 3: want to see the rocket ship blow up. My question
- 8:37Speaker 3: is this. What are the American people going to get
- 8:41Speaker 3: up off the barstool, take their finger out of their
- 8:44Speaker 3: rear end and start getting back to living their lives.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Because I can tell you.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Ted, we've had two serious shocks over the last year,
- 8:53Speaker 4: year and a half.
- 8:54Speaker 2: We had 9-11. Well, that's when it started.
- 8:57Speaker 3: That's when the addiction to all these images started.
- 8:59Speaker 2: No, it's not an addiction to these images.
- 9:02Speaker 4: We had 9-11. Now we have this Columbia disaster. And
- 9:06Speaker 4: on top of everything else, we have a pending war
- 9:09Speaker 4: with Iraq. you make it sound as if it is
- 9:12Speaker 4: something that is in our control, when in point of
- 9:15Speaker 4: fact it may be well out of our control.
- 9:16Speaker 3: It is totally in the control of the American people
- 9:19Speaker 3: to climb down off a bar stool, come on into
- 9:21Speaker 3: my restaurant instead of sitting there and watching the shuttle
- 9:25Speaker 3: blowing up over and over again. And I blame the media, too.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I blame the CBS. I blame... I'll tell you something
- 9:31Speaker 3: right now. Our lunch special was a thick slice of
- 9:33Speaker 3: New York cut and a sandwich roll and a cup
- 9:35Speaker 3: of coffee, steak and fries, and a rum and Coke.
- 9:38Speaker 3: And this was going to be our business band special.
- 9:40Speaker 3: And we had your choice of steamed beans or mushroom caps.
- 9:43Speaker 3: We had a full staff. We stood around with our
- 9:45Speaker 3: thumbs parked up our rear ends for 12 solid hours.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And why? A, because Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public
- 9:52Speaker 3: decided to stay home and revel in a shuttle blowing up.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Whoa, whoa, whoa. When you say revel, it means like
- 9:58Speaker 2: they were enjoying it.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Well, what do you call it when you're sitting there,
- 10:02Speaker 3: when you're parked in a barstool for 12 hours?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Well, wait a minute. People are getting the news. It
- 10:06Speaker 2: doesn't mean they're reveling in it.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And B, because.
- 10:09Speaker 2: No, I don't like the revel thing.
- 10:10Speaker 3: And B, because whoever was in charge of flying the
- 10:13Speaker 3: shuttle apparently didn't do it good enough. And training the crew,
- 10:17Speaker 3: and I know people died, and I'm still here. I'm
- 10:20Speaker 3: among the living. I got a 42-seat... What.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Are you talking about, whoever flew the shuttle?
- 10:25Speaker 3: I think it needs to be said. Whoever was flying
- 10:28Speaker 3: it didn't do it good.
- 10:30Speaker 2: It's computer-operated.
- 10:32Speaker 3: What is?
- 10:33Speaker 2: The shuttle Columbia, like all shuttles, are on entry on computer.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Well, you know, I don't know.
- 10:41Speaker 2: You don't know? And to say that whoever was flying
- 10:43Speaker 2: it didn't do it good?
- 10:45Speaker 3: I think that there was some manual, there was error
- 10:48Speaker 3: on the part of whoever flew it. And I am
- 10:51Speaker 3: saying that I am interested in finding out who, because
- 10:54Speaker 3: it cost me 87% of my business on Saturday. That's
- 10:58Speaker 3: all I'm saying.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Do you have a sensitivity for the families?
- 11:01Speaker 3: Yes, I do. Of course I do, Phil.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Then don't say my restaurant's important and your grief is not.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I didn't say that. I'm saying we need to look
- 11:11Speaker 3: into who was frying it and what went on in
- 11:14Speaker 3: that cockpit. What are they doing, playing mumbly pig? They're reentering,
- 11:18Speaker 3: they're going down to the planet Earth. Isn't there something
- 11:20Speaker 3: they should pay attention to?
- 11:23Speaker 2: I don't know what he's driving at, do you? He's
- 11:25Speaker 2: talking about the space shuttle.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Columbia and the news around it causing his restaurant not
- 11:31Speaker 4: to have enough business on Saturday. Now, I do know
- 11:33Speaker 4: that he is, and you talked to him, Janice, he
- 11:36Speaker 4: wants the government or somebody in the federal government or
- 11:39Speaker 4: some agency to start looking at reimbursing him for his
- 11:43Speaker 4: lost business because of the Columbia disaster. Now, there was
- 11:46Speaker 4: a lot of retail outlets that lost their business on Saturday.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Ted's was just one of them. He's the first businessman
- 11:52Speaker 4: to say he wants to actively petition the U.S. government
- 11:54Speaker 4: for reimbursement because the shuttle disaster caused people to stay
- 11:58Speaker 4: home and watch the news and not go into his restaurant.
- 12:00Speaker 2: The Phil Henry Show.
- 12:05Speaker 4: 1-800-449-8686 and mail more on the Phil Hendry Show.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I would love to talk to some small business owners
- 12:13Speaker 3: out there who know what I'm talking about because when
- 12:15Speaker 3: the American people are so addicted to images of the
- 12:18Speaker 3: spaceship blowing up that they don't even go out and
- 12:20Speaker 3: support local economy, that's what I'm talking about. And I
- 12:23Speaker 3: think because I would love to see the report on
- 12:26Speaker 3: what caused the Columbia to blow up because if I
- 12:29Speaker 3: see any pilot error or crew error, I'm entitled to
- 12:33Speaker 3: compensation under the Small Business Act of the United States government.
- 12:36Speaker 3: And that doesn't even address the selfishness of the viewers
- 12:38Speaker 3: who have no life at all and sit an entire Saturday.
- 12:43Speaker 4: You know, there are many, many, many, many people who
- 12:45Speaker 4: would say that this is a very selfish and insensitive
- 12:48Speaker 4: point of view.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I started my comments, Phil, by saying I feel for
- 12:51Speaker 3: the families of the people in the space capsule. I
- 12:58Speaker 3: feel for them, but I'm still here. See, these guys,
- 13:02Speaker 3: they're gone. I'm still here. I've got to go through
- 13:05Speaker 3: every day, sweating and holding the edge of the table
- 13:08Speaker 3: and just taking it.
- 13:09Speaker 5: 1-800-449-8686.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Here is Dave.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Go ahead. You're on the Phil Henry Show. You know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: you got a lot of nerve.
- 13:19Speaker 6: If I was starving, I wouldn't bring my family into
- 13:23Speaker 6: your restaurant.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 13:24Speaker 6: You're looking for a handout?
- 13:25Speaker 3: No, sir.
- 13:26Speaker 6: You don't even know what you're talking about?
- 13:29Speaker 3: No, sir.
- 13:29Speaker 6: A faith capsule? You didn't know if it's a Challenger?
- 13:33Speaker 6: You're out of your mind. I think you're drunk on that.
- 13:36Speaker 2: It's the Columbia.
- 13:39Speaker 6: I think you ought to move into that restaurant, pal,
- 13:42Speaker 6: because you know what? You're not going to have any
- 13:44Speaker 6: place else to go.
- 13:45Speaker 3: My business does very well. I'm talking about... What were
- 13:48Speaker 3: you doing on Saturday?
- 13:51Speaker 6: You.
- 13:51Speaker 3: What were you doing on Saturday? I know you were
- 13:54Speaker 3: parked on a bar stool watching this thing.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Why is everybody on a bar stool?
- 13:59Speaker 3: Well, whatever.
- 14:00Speaker 6: You know, you have got to be kidding. You've got
- 14:04Speaker 6: to be kidding, but you know what?
- 14:06Speaker 3: This is so serious that you should not be given
- 14:12Speaker 3: the time of day.
- 14:13Speaker 6: And I hope your restaurant, I hope it doesn't burn
- 14:16Speaker 6: down because then you'll be able to collect insurance. I
- 14:19Speaker 6: hope you just go broke.
- 14:21Speaker 4: We're talking about a sensitivity to people who died, Ted,
- 14:24Speaker 4: and to the NASA and to the United States government
- 14:27Speaker 4: and to the people of this country.
- 14:29Speaker 2: And you're worried about.
- 14:30Speaker 3: SBA!
- 14:30Speaker 2: You don't know what SBA is!
- 14:31Speaker 6: They probably gave you the money to open your goddamn restaurant.
- 14:35Speaker 3: You know what? The Small Business Act of America, it
- 14:38Speaker 3: titles me to compensation. If somebody... No, it doesn't. It
- 14:42Speaker 3: does not. If it flew, they flew the spaceship. It
- 14:45Speaker 3: does not.
- 14:45Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 14:45Speaker 6: You've got to repay that loan, you moron.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Did you spend any money on sanity? Did you support
- 14:49Speaker 3: the economy? Or were you sitting with your thumb parked
- 14:51Speaker 3: up your rear end watching the spaceship?
- 14:55Speaker 6: You're appalling.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Okay, so you can answer the question.
- 14:58Speaker 6: And I'm really glad.
- 15:00Speaker 3: There's a time and a place. There's a time and
- 15:02Speaker 3: a place. Blow it out your ass. Yeah, blow it
- 15:03Speaker 3: out your ass. But take your thumb out of it first. Yellow.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I'm here.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I'm here.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Do you hear what we're hearing here? It's indignation from people. Indignation.
- 15:16Speaker 2: This was a sad day for our country.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It was absolutely a sad day, Phil. And people could
- 15:22Speaker 3: have shared the grief. People could have communicated with each other, sitting,
- 15:27Speaker 3: for instance, in our cocktail lounge, having a TED, talking
- 15:32Speaker 3: about it.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Sitting on your bar stool instead of somebody else's.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I have a restaurant and lounge. I don't have some
- 15:42Speaker 3: leather door, rectangle window in the door, jukebox, cigarette machine,
- 15:47Speaker 3: pool hall bar.
- 15:50Speaker 4: No, you have a restaurant where they're serving the Ted
- 15:54Speaker 4: and the baked potatoes.
- 15:55Speaker 3: 1-800... Yeah, that's right.
- 15:57Speaker 2: 1-800-4... What do you mean, leather doors with the.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 16:00Speaker 6: 1-800-449-8686.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Hey, Seuss, you're on the Phil Henry Show. Hello.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Hello.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Yes, good evening.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 16:10Speaker 5: I just basically want to tell this guy, you really,
- 16:14Speaker 5: it's totally unbelievable. How can you suggest that people go
- 16:19Speaker 5: to your restaurant at a time like this? It's not
- 16:21Speaker 5: an obligation. Are you a business owner? It's not an
- 16:23Speaker 5: obligation to go to your restaurant.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Are you a business owner?
- 16:26Speaker 5: No, but there's no obligation. That's what's besides the point.
- 16:29Speaker 3: How could you possibly know what's what?
- 16:30Speaker 5: That's besides the point. You can't blame the failure of
- 16:35Speaker 5: your restaurant on something like this as a tragedy?
- 16:38Speaker 3: I'm simply saying my grand opening was on Saturday.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Well, that's fine.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:43Speaker 5: But you can't say that because people wanted to stay
- 16:46Speaker 5: home and watch this, your restaurant is a failure.
- 16:48Speaker 3: All right, let me tell you something.
- 16:50Speaker 5: There's no obligation to that.
- 16:52Speaker 3: It's a lot of out-of-money pocket. Phil, could you play
- 16:54Speaker 3: the commercial so I can tell this gentleman?
- 16:56Speaker 2: No, Craig, where's the commercial?
- 16:58Speaker 3: Listen to this. All right, right there. That's $ 250, 000 out
- 17:02Speaker 3: of our budget. I had to pay whoever she is,
- 17:06Speaker 3: and I don't know who she is. See what I'm saying? Now,
- 17:10Speaker 3: I had 42 seats without rear ends on them. Do
- 17:13Speaker 3: you understand what that is? That's called take all that
- 17:16Speaker 3: money and flush it down the toilet.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Well, you think you're the only person that loses money?
- 17:24Speaker 5: How much money do you think the government lost on
- 17:26Speaker 5: this situation?
- 17:28Speaker 2: And let's talk about the loss of human life here, okay? Well, yeah, exactly.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Human life has no price at all. It's priceless.
- 17:36Speaker 3: I understand that.
- 17:38Speaker 5: The loss of one person, listen, one person lost. It's
- 17:41Speaker 5: worth more than all the restaurants in the world.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I totally understand what you're saying, but those people died
- 17:46Speaker 3: in an instant. For 12 hours on Saturday, I had
- 17:49Speaker 3: to bend over and grab a table while it was
- 17:51Speaker 3: put to me financially.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Now, what are you talking about?
- 17:56Speaker 3: It hurts me to think about the flying saucer burning up,
- 17:59Speaker 3: but my restaurant was empty.
- 18:02Speaker 5: And you know what? You also need to have a
- 18:04Speaker 5: little bit more sense here. There's no such thing. That
- 18:07Speaker 5: was a spaceship made by the United States government, not
- 18:10Speaker 5: some flying spaceship, as you call it. Have some more
- 18:14Speaker 5: respect for the government.
- 18:16Speaker 3: It was the space shuttle.
- 18:18Speaker 2: It's not a rocket ship.
- 18:20Speaker 5: And for your information, it was not a human failure.
- 18:24Speaker 5: The shuttle destroyed because of what happened on reentry. It
- 18:28Speaker 5: was a mechanical failure on the shuttle itself. Not on
- 18:32Speaker 5: human error. So it does not matter who drives the,
- 18:35Speaker 5: it was not, it doesn't matter who was actually piloting
- 18:38Speaker 5: the shuttle because it was not their fault.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Well, who are you, John Glenn? No, I'm not John Glenn.
- 18:43Speaker 2: No, he's not John Glenn. He reads the news like
- 18:45Speaker 2: everybody else.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Let me tell you something. I constantly read up about
- 18:49Speaker 5: the United States space shuttle, and I think it's a
- 18:51Speaker 5: wondrous invention. You know that? The United States is a
- 18:54Speaker 5: wonderful country putting up, With space shuttle programs. How many
- 18:59Speaker 5: other countries have a space shuttle flying around?
- 19:02Speaker 3: We're not going to find any Martians. That's the only
- 19:04Speaker 3: reason why they built it, because they think they're going
- 19:06Speaker 3: to find Martians.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Let me tell you something. You need to grab a
- 19:10Speaker 5: rock and hit your teeth with it.
- 19:13Speaker 3: I need to do what?
- 19:13Speaker 5: That's what you need to do, is grab a rock
- 19:16Speaker 5: and hit your teeth with it.
- 19:17Speaker 3: You want me to self-mutilate. You want me to pound
- 19:20Speaker 3: a rock into my face until I don't look like
- 19:22Speaker 3: myself anymore. Is that it?
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds pretty good to me.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So both of you guys want violence.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Basically, what I'm just saying is, what I'm just saying
- 19:30Speaker 5: is you need to knock some common sense into yourself.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Sit down and think what you're saying. You're saying, first
- 19:35Speaker 5: of all, that it's human error, which it's not.
- 19:37Speaker 3: I just want to know what it was. I just
- 19:40Speaker 3: want to know what it was. If it was human error.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I'm saying if.
- 19:44Speaker 2: It was a tile that fell off of the thing.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Now it's an if. Yeah, it was a tile that
- 19:48Speaker 2: fell off the side of the thing. It hit the wing.
- 19:51Speaker 4: It caused an increase in temperature on reentry. That's what
- 19:54Speaker 4: they think it is. We just saw a memorial service today, Ted.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I'm really sorry that your business was off 87%.
- 20:01Speaker 2: A lot of retail business was off. I told you that.
- 20:03Speaker 3: All right, so what's that got to do with Ted Bell?
- 20:05Speaker 3: I'm Ted Bell. You see, the two of you forget
- 20:08Speaker 3: one thing. My name is Ted Bell. You don't compare
- 20:11Speaker 3: me to some other businessman. I wrote the book on business.
- 20:14Speaker 3: All right? I'm Ted Bell. And when Ted Bell loses 87%,
- 20:19Speaker 3: Ted Bell doesn't stand around just rubbing his rear end.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Ted Bell goes into proactive stance. All right.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Hey, Seuss, thanks for your call.
- 20:26Speaker 3: 1-800-449-8686.
- 20:27Speaker 4: 1-800-449-8686.
- 20:27Speaker 2: See, that guy was stunned.
- 20:33Speaker 3: He was like, whoa, I didn't know I was talking
- 20:35Speaker 3: to Ted Bell. Otherwise, he would have... Okay, fine.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Just hold the line.
- 20:38Speaker 7: 1-800-449-8686.
- 20:39Speaker 4: There was a lot of retail business off on Saturday.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Should this man who owns a restaurant be reimbursed by
- 20:45Speaker 4: the government because of the shuttle disaster?
- 20:47Speaker 2: Because everybody was watching TV and not going to his restaurant.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Bill Henry Show. The Bill Henry Show. Bill Henry Show.
- 20:55Speaker 3: 1-800-449-8686.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Ted's of Beverly Hills.
- 21:05Speaker 7: Steakhouse.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Come on down. Hey, come on down to Ted's of
- 21:09Speaker 3: Beverly Hills. We've got our new opening in Walnut Creek.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Of course, our Washington, D.C., Georgetown location of the classic
- 21:15Speaker 3: Ted's of Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, California.
- 21:18Speaker 7: Here at Ted's, we want to put our meat.
- 21:22Speaker 5: In your mouth.
- 21:22Speaker 4: I've got to tell you, Ted, I've had a couple
- 21:24Speaker 4: of calls from people who know you're a sponsor, and
- 21:27Speaker 4: I appreciate your sponsorship.
- 21:28Speaker 2: They feel this is one extended commercial for your restaurant.
- 21:34Speaker 3: First of all, I spend a lot of money on advertising,
- 21:36Speaker 3: so I don't think anybody has the right to question
- 21:38Speaker 3: me on how I use my money.
- 21:41Speaker 2: No, but you buy airtime.
- 21:43Speaker 4: You're spending an entire hour promoting your restaurant.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I'm spending... Excuse me. Number one, you are the talk
- 21:50Speaker 3: show host or the broadcaster who is not allowed to
- 21:54Speaker 3: comment about the advertiser. I spend money on your show.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Do I not?
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yes, you do.
- 21:59Speaker 3: All right. I'm simply saying that business owners... took it
- 22:05Speaker 3: in the shorts on Saturday because people couldn't get up
- 22:10Speaker 3: off of the barstool to go out to the.
- 22:12Speaker 2: You keep saying the barstool.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Is everybody sitting on a barstool Saturday watching the shuttle news?
- 22:18Speaker 3: I don't know. Whatever. They can't get up from their bowling,
- 22:21Speaker 3: from the alley then. They can't get up from the barstool.
- 22:24Speaker 3: They can't get out from underneath the tree, whatever it is.
- 22:27Speaker 3: But they are watching the shuttle rather than going out
- 22:30Speaker 3: and finding a life.
- 22:33Speaker 2: All right, 1-800-449-8686. Lori, go ahead. You're on with Ted Bell.
- 22:38Speaker 7: First of all, I don't understand why you think going
- 22:41Speaker 7: to your particular restaurant is getting a life. Second of all,
- 22:45Speaker 7: I happen to believe that you're using this to get
- 22:47Speaker 7: more advertising. And I understand you're spending an awful lot
- 22:51Speaker 7: of money on your advertising because that's what you need
- 22:54Speaker 7: to do for your business. But I called because I
- 22:57Speaker 7: wanted to apologize for other business owners that feel like
- 23:01Speaker 7: I do because I'm fairly embarrassed for you being another
- 23:05Speaker 7: business owner calling and making some of these ugly remarks.
- 23:08Speaker 3: That's why I do good business. That's why I'm Ted Bell.
- 23:11Speaker 3: I'm not you and I'm not other business owners. I'm
- 23:13Speaker 3: Ted Bell.
- 23:13Speaker 7: I'm not going to apologize for knowing who you are
- 23:16Speaker 7: because I don't really care who you are. I'm just
- 23:19Speaker 7: saying that right now in the crisis of these seven families' lives,
- 23:25Speaker 7: that you as a business owner and you as a
- 23:28Speaker 7: United States citizen and you as a taxpayer of the
- 23:32Speaker 7: United States did not even have the common decency before
- 23:36Speaker 7: you started slamming... the lieutenant commander that commanded this space shuttle.
- 23:41Speaker 7: You did not even know it was the Columbia. You
- 23:44Speaker 7: said the Challenger that happened to expire January 28th in 1980.
- 23:50Speaker 3: All right, you're a space freak, so you know all
- 23:52Speaker 3: the dates. Good for you. No, I'm not trying.
- 23:54Speaker 7: To say that I'm a professor of all this.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Do you know who invented wrapping a baked potato with tinfoil?
- 24:02Speaker 7: All right, but I want.
- 24:03Speaker 3: To say this, Lori. You talk about achievements. You talk
- 24:06Speaker 3: about exploration, and you talk about the great things. I
- 24:09Speaker 3: was the first restaurant owner to wrap a baked potato
- 24:13Speaker 3: with tinfoil. Now, that may sound like not much to you.
- 24:17Speaker 7: No, that is a nice thing for you to be
- 24:20Speaker 7: proud of.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Okay, see?
- 24:21Speaker 4: See?
- 24:22Speaker 7: Everybody has their.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Own accomplishments and their own achievements.
- 24:27Speaker 7: And it's not right for you to be slamming people
- 24:30Speaker 7: on this particular day because they didn't come to your opening.
- 24:32Speaker 2: You don't care.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Do you know how many people wrapped their baked potatoes
- 24:41Speaker 3: in tinfoil?
- 24:42Speaker 2: I don't care. It's got nothing.
- 24:43Speaker 4: It certainly doesn't even compare to what these seven great
- 24:46Speaker 4: people did in the space shuttle.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I wrapped baked potatoes with tinfoil.
- 24:51Speaker 7: I mean, it's just... I don't know. I don't want
- 24:54Speaker 7: to argue with you. I'm still fairly... you know, upset
- 24:58Speaker 7: about it. And I guess I wanted to know, whenever
- 25:01Speaker 7: you saw this on the news at 11 o'clock, you
- 25:04Speaker 7: mentioned your time, did you even drop to your knees
- 25:08Speaker 7: or look up to the sky and say, please, God,
- 25:10Speaker 7: bless these families and these lives?
- 25:13Speaker 3: Did you even think about what the president of the
- 25:16Speaker 3: United States was going through? Lori, I'm Ted Bell. When
- 25:18Speaker 3: I pray to God, I don't kneel. I stand. I stand.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I never kneel.
- 25:23Speaker 7: I am so sorry for you.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Excuse me. I'm Ted Bell.
- 25:26Speaker 7: I'll tell you what.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 25:27Speaker 7: I will add your name to my prayer list.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Look, I own three.
- 25:31Speaker 7: I don't want to debate what.
- 25:33Speaker 3: You own and what you don't own. That's not what
- 25:35Speaker 3: this is about. And the classic Ted's at Beverly Hills,
- 25:38Speaker 3: Beverly Hills. Now, those are my three restaurants. And look,
- 25:42Speaker 3: I'm inviting you to come on in and get a
- 25:43Speaker 3: Columbia cooler. It's something for the ladies. It's refreshing.
- 25:47Speaker 7: What is a Columbia cooler? I won't allow you to
- 25:50Speaker 7: turn my comments into you offering me something because that's
- 25:54Speaker 7: not why I called. I'm not trying to get something
- 25:58Speaker 7: from you.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I'm going to hang up on you.
- 26:00Speaker 7: I'm not trying to do this.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Lori, thank you. You know, Ted, I can't stand it anymore.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I'm going to hang up on you.
- 26:05Speaker 3: I'm a sponsor on your radio show.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I don't care. You can pull all of your stinking
- 26:08Speaker 2: rotten advertising. I'm hanging up on you.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Because you have been insensitive, you have been rude, you've
- 26:16Speaker 4: missed the entire point of why people were grieving this weekend.
- 26:19Speaker 4: The only thing you care about is the business at
- 26:22Speaker 4: your Walnut Creek, Ted's and Beverly Hills, and you describe
- 26:25Speaker 4: what happened to you on Saturday as having to bend over,
- 26:28Speaker 4: grab the edge of a table, and take the pain.
- 26:30Speaker 3: That's right, yes.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:33Speaker 2: You don't even recognize how stupid that comment is.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Imagine the pain of the families.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Phil, I'm sorry of what happened to the, uh.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Columbia! The Columbia! What were you about to say? The, uh,
- 26:46Speaker 2: Freedom 7?
- 26:48Speaker 3: Look, the Columbia cooler is 151 in Tabasco with dry
- 26:51Speaker 3: ice and smoke and.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I don't care!
- 26:53Speaker 3: 42 seats, Phil!
- 26:57Speaker 4: I don't care about your business! I know there's a
- 27:02Speaker 4: lot of retail that took it in the shorts on Saturday.
- 27:04Speaker 4: People were not of a mind to go out and
- 27:08Speaker 4: buy stuff. They wanted to watch the news, you idiot.
- 27:10Speaker 3: All right, Phil, you're entitled to your opinion, and I
- 27:16Speaker 3: will tell you this. I am going to pull my
- 27:18Speaker 3: advertising from your program.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Good.
- 27:21Speaker 3: And that represents a substantial amount of money, as you know,
- 27:24Speaker 3: on your program, about a quarter of a million dollars
- 27:26Speaker 3: a year.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Fine, I don't give a crap.
- 27:28Speaker 3: And as far as I'm concerned, my association with you personally,
- 27:32Speaker 3: you have insulted me.
- 27:34Speaker 4: You've insulted everybody. You've insulted the families of the Columbia.
- 27:36Speaker 4: You've insulted the people of this country. You've insulted everybody.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Okay, so you think you're coming into my restaurant cup again?
- 27:42Speaker 2: I'm not coming into your rotten restaurant.
- 27:45Speaker 4: By the way, the last time I was in your restaurant,
- 27:47Speaker 4: I asked for a steak medium rare, and it was
- 27:48Speaker 4: cold in the middle.
- 27:49Speaker 3: That's the way you're supposed to serve it. That's what
- 27:51Speaker 3: the book says.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Oh, baloney.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I'm going to Ruth's Chris.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Ruth's Chris? Ruth's Chris. You told you never to mention
- 28:04Speaker 3: that name. I told you.
- 28:06Speaker 2: And when I'm in Miami, I'm going to Shula's Steakhouse.
- 28:08Speaker 3: It's a dump. D-U-M-P.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Well, at least they.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Don't serve steaks there that you have to savor the
- 28:15Speaker 4: fine aroma. How is it you put it to me once?
- 28:17Speaker 4: Diarrhea is like a fine wine. You're supposed to savor it.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Every time I eat a steak at your place, I
- 28:24Speaker 4: get that.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Do you savor the diarrhea?
- 28:26Speaker 2: No, I do not.
- 28:29Speaker 3: All right, that's it. You and Maria will never wrap
- 28:31Speaker 3: your lips around my filet with bacon.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Good.
- 28:33Speaker 4: I don't want to put my mouth on your filet anyway.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Asshole.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Yeah, see you later.
