- 0:27Look at this guy. All right, we're going to get
- 0:32out of here. I don't want them hearing what I
- 0:34got to say. We're going to stand in the
- 0:41round rain. We're going to do coffee with
- 0:42Kenny. All right, so Kenny and I just
- 0:48went to Rockingham, and the story is amazing.
- 0:54And Kenny's on his phone. Hey, this is perfect.
- 0:58You come over here with me. All right, This is coffee with
- 1:02Kenny Thursday morning. This is our dear friend John
- 1:06Bailey, and we just went to Rockingham and the JD Mcduffie
- 1:11team. Will you hold my coffee?
- 1:13This is all about JD Mcduffie. So I got my JD Mcduffie shirt so
- 1:20Dale Junior would love this. So the story goes is how far are
- 1:24we from Michigan International Speedway right now?
- 1:2715 minutes. John Bailey, everybody.
- 1:30Bailey Excavating. You used to sponsor JD
- 1:35Mcduffie's cars. Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:39OK. Seven late 70s, early 80s.
- 1:42Yeah, but you're he's one of the good ones.
- 1:45John is one of us. He's got a beautiful family,
- 1:48married, two kids. And so here's a story.
- 1:51We're going. So Kenny Schrader saves.
- 1:56No. Yeah.
- 1:56But this is a good story. You might want to be here.
- 1:58OK, so, so, so Kenny does the sport of service, in my opinion.
- 2:04He buys up everybody's. He bought Dick Trickles old
- 2:07hauler. Talking about how you all became
- 2:09friends. Oh, yeah.
- 2:10He bought Dick Trickles old hauler.
- 2:12Then Kenny Schrader buys JD Mcduffie's old hauler.
- 2:16He beat me out at the auction. OK, now this is where I want you
- 2:20to take over. This is a story about JD
- 2:23Mcduffie's hauler Kenny Schrader buys.
- 2:26Kenny likes history. OK, So tell us what's standing
- 2:30there. OK, tell us a story about Kenny
- 2:35Schrader getting JD Mcduffie's hauler one of the whole deal.
- 2:39So my dad bought the truck for JD when he was sponsoring him.
- 2:42And when I went traveled with JD for about a year, that was my
- 2:46job taking care of the truck and got lost after the accident at
- 2:52Watkin Glen. And then Gene got it back and it
- 2:55was in the shop. And then finally when she had
- 2:58the auction in 94, I called the auctioneer and says I got to
- 3:03have that truck. That was my job taking care of
- 3:05that truck. I drove that truck to California
- 3:07and I said, what do you think it'll bring?
- 3:08And he says 3500 bucks. I says, well, so I got a
- 3:13banknote for 7500 bucks. He put somebody in the crowd
- 3:17because I couldn't be there. So I figured we were going to
- 3:20get the truck and bring him home to Michigan and called him up
- 3:24the next morning and said, did we get, oh, blue?
- 3:26And he says, you're not going to believe this.
- 3:27You're not going to believe this.
- 3:29NASCAR superstar Kenny Schrader sent somebody down there and put
- 3:33him in the crowd and said don't leave without that truck, he
- 3:35says. And you're like, that's the son
- 3:39of a. So now at this time, you don't
- 3:41even know Kenny Schrader. No.
- 3:42No, no. So what happens?
- 3:44Do you make a phone call to Schrader?
- 3:45Oh. I called down to Hendricks, I
- 3:48says. OK, Schrader drive for Hendrick
- 3:51at this time. No wonder Schrader had so much
- 3:53money he drive for Hendrick. So I said I need to speak with
- 3:56Kenny Schrader and he said, well, he comes in here about
- 3:59once a day, but I'll give you his shop number.
- 4:02So I called over his shop and he was on the road going to out
- 4:07West for a late model race. Kenny always travelling.
- 4:12And he stopped and called me back from some truck stop in
- 4:17Texas and I said hey, I says I really need to have that truck.
- 4:21And he says no, no. I've always hi Julie always want
- 4:23hold on. This is his missus.
- 4:25So we're doing coffee with Kenny on the on the story of how he
- 4:29ended up getting J DS truck. So OK, Schrader's out on the
- 4:32going off the West Coast. He he calls you.
- 4:34From truck stop before cell phones.
- 4:37He says no, I've always wanted that truck.
- 4:39He says so. Annie, we're tell.
- 4:42We're telling the story of how he ended up with the truck.
- 4:45It's a good, it's a good story. We got a lot of Dr. Bys so.
- 4:48So that then we became friends and he still didn't want to get
- 4:51rid of the truck. And then he called me up one day
- 4:53and said he says I got Daddy's tow truck back.
- 4:56I got Daddy's tow truck back his.
- 4:57Dad's Bill, Bill Schrader. So Kenny, that was a big deal.
- 5:01He got Bill Schrader, his father's tow truck, back.
- 5:04OK. And he says, I know what old
- 5:06blue means to you, come and get it.
- 5:08I had to buy it but. Yeah, but Schrader's always
- 5:11going to do things with heart and and fairness.
- 5:14He picked us up into the airport, give us a car to drive.
- 5:17Got us. Yeah, We sent a wrecker after
- 5:20it. It didn't have any breaks.
- 5:21Never. Never had any.
- 5:22Breaks What do you think your dad paid?
- 5:24So your dad was the original owner of JD Mcduffie's Holler.
- 5:28What do you think your father paid for?
- 5:29That about 7500 bucks. I'll be darned.
- 5:32Yeah, but it was only, you know, it was only 5 or 6 years old
- 5:36then. Yeah.
- 5:38Right. OK, so John, thank you.
- 5:41John Bailey, his wife Julie, the kids and.
- 5:45And by the way, pure. Pure everything in Michigan.
- 5:49You know, you come in the state of Michigan and you see pure and
- 5:53your boys tell me that pure means your weather's crazy.
- 5:56What does pure mean? No that.
- 5:58What is that used to be? Before it was UNION 76, it was
- 6:02pure. But OK, but when you come in the
- 6:03state of Michigan, when, when you're on the road.
- 6:06That's Pure Michigan, yeah. What does that mean?
- 6:09What does pure mean? You don't know?
- 6:11Not really. Sure.
- 6:13He's like us. It's pure.
- 6:15It's pure. It clean, baby.
- 6:17OK, so if you don't mind, we're going to roll in there real
- 6:20quick. Tell me you don't got to go with
- 6:23me so much that I want to roll in there.
- 6:25I want to look at this red JD Mcduffie Pontiac that you have.
- 6:28What's the story behind that Pontiac?
- 6:30So that was the car he drove two months before he died at Watkins
- 6:35Glen. I'm sorry.
- 6:37And some guy in a Square D car was lapping him on lap 264.
- 6:44And how do you remember that? And got into the back of it and
- 6:47knocked him out of the race and. Hold on, are you kidding?
- 6:51I wrecked JD. Well, he's probably on your way.
- 6:55Oh my God, I feel horrible. That's what you were trying to
- 6:59tell me last night. That's why I sent you the
- 7:01picture on the robot. You can watch it on YouTube.
- 7:07Dear Lord, please forgive me my sins.
- 7:11I love you. OK?
- 7:12So hold on now. I want all of you to play along.
- 7:15Respond right here so we can go on YouTube right now.
- 7:18Can you watch you watch me getting into JD?
- 7:21LEP 264. At Watkins Lane.
- 7:23No at. Dover at Dover at Dover.
- 7:27Oh I am so sorry man. I I should have?
- 7:30You were going twice as fast. I should have had better control
- 7:32of my car. You.
- 7:33Were going twice as fast. He was just he was saving his
- 7:36tires. Yeah, well, we all love JD
- 7:38because he was right there, you know, with the original, what
- 7:43did we call those race car drivers?
- 7:45Independence. Independence where they they
- 7:49could say, hey, I can run 10th, I'm going to lose money if we
- 7:53run 20th and we don't put on a couple sets of tires, we're
- 7:56going to make money today. Or wear the motor out.
- 7:59Or other motor outs. So back then, independents raced
- 8:01for a living. Great story Kyle Petty tells me.
- 8:05Kyle Petty says Diddy, that's what they call their dads down
- 8:08South. Diddy said, run these leaf
- 8:10springs over to Buddy Arrington. Kyle Petty says, I take these
- 8:15used parts over to Buddy Arrington's house and he's got
- 8:18this. Kyle says it looked like a
- 8:20mansion to him. He said that that day, Kyle
- 8:25Petty said that dawned on me. We were racing for a living and
- 8:28we were broke. The independents were racing for
- 8:32a real living, you know? Yeah, winner, winners.
- 8:35Here's the bottom line there. Winners spend all their money on
- 8:38winning and they're broke. Independents were smarter.
- 8:42They they're like, OK, we could win, but we got we got family.
- 8:46We got to feed. Do you agree with that?
- 8:49Yeah, that's exactly right. I lived with him on and off for
- 8:52about a year and it was. That's the way it was.
- 8:55That's the way it was. Wow, that's pretty heartfelt,
- 8:58everybody. OK, we're going to end this
- 9:00video by just going inside and doing a 360 of the great JD
- 9:04Mcduffie's car. And John, we love you.
- 9:06So that car was bought at the same auction that the truck was
- 9:11bought at, and it went to Texas and got put back together and it
- 9:15was in a Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant.
- 9:18I'm hanging. From the ceiling.
- 9:19That's amazing how that great stuff just gets lost.
- 9:22And a friend of mine, Dean Richardson, we found it on
- 9:26Craigslist and he went down and got it.
- 9:27Wow. OK, we're going to end like
- 9:29this. Everybody, it's time to go eat.
- 9:32We're going to do a great America.
- 9:33We're going to go do a quick 360.
- 9:36We're doing a we just had a great story.
- 9:39Kim, say hello. We're going to eat lunch.
- 9:43But here it is. Everybody look at this and you
- 9:48know, the seats back in those days, as we all know that that
- 9:52was Earnhardt made that seat famous.
- 9:55Wasn't that often like an old Ford Mustang?
- 9:59What those seats like? Old.
- 10:02Yeah. So.
- 10:03So this seat originated from a Ford, and Earnhardt was famous
- 10:07for those. That's the seat that they all
- 10:09ran back in the day. That was the seat that JD drove
- 10:13in. That's the seat.
- 10:15Here's where the cables hung up from the ceiling.
- 10:18Oh my God. Well, at least it's still there.
- 10:21It's going on old blue. You're going to put this on old
- 10:24blue where is old. Blue down the street.
- 10:26I'll be damned. OK, well, we got to go eat.
- 10:28Let's do a quick 360 here. Some really good stuff.
- 10:33JD look at that. Is that Schrader?
- 10:37No, that's Finland, that was. A Schrader.
- 10:38Car. Yeah.
- 10:39All right, we're going. We're going.
- 10:41Let's go. OK, everybody, I hope you
- 10:45enjoyed this. And the Baileys are wonderful
- 10:50people. What a great story about the
- 10:52legendary JD Mcduffie. Have a great Thursday.
