- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and as always...
- 0:04I'm joined by the one and only Edwin Carrington.
- 0:07Edwin, how's it going?
- 0:07Doing well,
- 0:08Claire-glad to be here.
- 0:10This is one of those topics I've been itching to get into.
- 0:13Virtual hiring?
- 0:14It's not just some temporary phase anymore.
- 0:17It's the new default-and honestly,
- 0:19a lot of companies are still missing the mark.
- 0:19Yeah,
- 0:22totally.
- 0:23And like-it blows my mind how many places just...
- 0:26take their old in-person process and slap it on Zoom.
- 0:29I remember this one remote job I interviewed for,
- 0:32a few years back, and...
- 0:33it was just this really flat video call.
- 0:36No intro, no vibe, nothing to make it feel real.
- 0:39I actually sat there wondering if they even remembered my name by the
- 0:42end.
- 0:42You're not alone.
- 0:44That kind of experience happens all the time.
- 0:46And it's not just about awkward Zoom calls.
- 0:49When companies treat remote hiring like a copy-paste of what worked in
- 0:53person...
- 0:54they miss the stuff that actually matters.
- 0:56Digital presence, self-management,
- 0:59how someone communicates online-it all changes in a virtual setup.
- 1:03If you're still focused on firm handshakes or reading body language?
- 1:07Yeah, you're gonna miss out on a lot of great people.
- 1:07Right-and it's not
- 1:11just about who you hire, it's also the experience you create.
- 1:15If it feels...
- 1:17robotic or forgettable, people check out.
- 1:19Or worse-they take the job, realize it's nothing like what they expected,
- 1:24and bounce a few months later.
- 1:26I think we talked about that in our retention episode?
- 1:29Like, how that very first impression can kinda set the whole tone?
- 1:29Exactly.
- 1:33And we've seen the numbers to back that up.
- 1:35Companies that don't evolve their hiring for remote?
- 1:39Higher turnover, lower engagement,
- 1:41more friction.
- 1:42The fix isn't to make remote hiring feel like the old way-it's to design
- 1:47it around what actually works now.
- 1:49That takes new thinking, better tools...
- 1:52and a shift in how you define what a great hire even looks like.
- 1:52So if
- 1:56you're listening right now thinking,
- 1:58"Why isn't this working for us?"-you're not alone.
- 2:01But the upside is...
- 2:02there are real ways to fix it.
- 2:04And that's what we're gonna get into next.
- 2:04Alright Edwin,
- 2:07so...
- 2:08what does a great virtual hiring experience actually look like?
- 2:11I keep hearing this phrase-"candidate-centric"-but like,
- 2:14what does that mean when you're starting from scratch?
- 2:14It starts way before
- 2:18the interview.
- 2:19The journey begins the moment someone stumbles across your company-maybe
- 2:24through a job ad, maybe just Googling your brand.
- 2:26The top companies?
- 2:28They're using things like personalized intro videos,
- 2:31short digital culture decks, even little "day-in-the-life" videos to
- 2:35give people a feel for what it's really like to work there.
- 2:38It's not about listing values-it's about showing them.
- 2:38Oh yeah!
- 2:42I've seen a few do that-like, little clips from the team or even a quick
- 2:46peek inside their Slack channels.
- 2:48It's a small thing, but it's like-"Hey,
- 2:50we're not robots.
- 2:51Come meet the humans."Exactly.
- 2:53Then once you're into the interview stage,
- 2:56you've got to move past the basic Q&A.
- 2:58Bring in some interaction-whiteboarding,
- 3:01team challenges, live problem-solving.
- 3:03These aren't gimmicks.
- 3:05They actually show you how someone thinks,
- 3:07how they collaborate remotely.
- 3:09One of my favorites?
- 3:11Ask candidates to walk you through their ideal remote workday,
- 3:14or co-solve something with your team in real time.
- 3:17That's where you see things like adaptability and self-direction shine
- 3:21through.
- 3:21I love that.
- 3:22And I mean-it also just feels fairer,
- 3:24right?
- 3:25Like, if you're only screening resumes or trusting your gut,
- 3:28you're probably missing some rockstars who just...
- 3:30don't shine on paper.
- 3:31What about assessments, though?
- 3:33I know OAD's got those behavioral tools-how do they fit into all this?
- 3:33Behavioral
- 3:38assessments are huge.
- 3:39They measure things like preferred work style,
- 3:42communication habits, even how someone deals with ambiguity or feedback.
- 3:47And when you pair that data with real tasks?
- 3:49You don't just get a profile-you get a full picture.
- 3:53It's not about replacing your instinct-it's about backing it up with
- 3:56real insight.
- 3:56Okay, so if I'm a hiring manager listening to this,
- 4:00I'm thinking: "Cool-I need to show off my culture,
- 4:04make interviews interactive, and add data-driven tools." But how do I
- 4:09make sure the human part doesn't get lost?
- 4:11Like...
- 4:11how do I make sure people actually feel seen?
- 4:11That's where communication
- 4:16comes in.
- 4:16Quick updates, setting clear expectations,
- 4:19even just a short note after the interview-it all matters.
- 4:23People want to feel like they're not in a black hole.
- 4:26Respect and clarity go a long way.
- 4:28And when you do it well, you're already standing out from the crowd.
- 4:28Totally.
- 4:33And like-it's not hard!
- 4:34It's just about being thoughtful.
- 4:36Okay, so we've covered the "before" and "during" parts of hiring.
- 4:39But after the offer...
- 4:41I feel like that's where things really fall apart.
- 4:41You nailed it,
- 4:44Claire.
- 4:44Onboarding is where the rubber meets the road.
- 4:47Too often, it's an afterthought-especially when it's virtual.
- 4:50But those first few days?
- 4:52That's where new hires figure out whether they belong,
- 4:55whether they're supported, and whether this new job actually works for
- 4:58them.
- 4:58So what makes great onboarding,
- 5:00like, actually great?
- 5:01I've heard about stuff like virtual welcome tours or those "First Week
- 5:05Success Plans." But...
- 5:07what does that even look like in real life?
- 5:07Let me give you a quick example.
- 5:11I worked with this startup last year-they were hiring across three time
- 5:15zones, all remote.
- 5:16Instead of just an email, they did a virtual open house before the official
- 5:21start date.
- 5:21The new folks got to meet the team,
- 5:24ask questions, tour the tools they'd be using.
- 5:27It wasn't about checklists-it was about connection.
- 5:31Then on day one, they had this "First Week Success Plan"-simple goals,
- 5:37intro meetings, and a buddy system.
- 5:38What happened?
- 5:40People ramped up faster and actually felt like part of the team.
- 5:40That's
- 5:44so cool.
- 5:45And I guess tech plays a role here too,
- 5:47right?
- 5:47Like, using a solid ATS or chat tools or even a bot to answer those "Hey,
- 5:52where do I find X?" questions.
- 5:54It's not about replacing people-it's about reducing friction.
- 5:54Exactly.
- 5:58The tech should support the human side-not replace it.
- 6:01Whether it's automated messages,
- 6:03a shared checklist, or just a welcome video-when it's done well,
- 6:08people feel informed, confident,
- 6:10and, most importantly, connected.
- 6:12Add in a feedback loop during the first week?
- 6:15That's where the magic happens.
- 6:15Yeah,
- 6:17feedback loops are such a good call.
- 6:19Like, onboarding isn't just a welcome party-it's your first shot at long-term
- 6:23retention.
- 6:24And if you fumble it...
- 6:25it's hard to recover.
- 6:26We've definitely touched on that before-day one matters way more than
- 6:30day ninety.
- 6:30Absolutely.
- 6:32The best teams treat hiring and onboarding as one continuous experience.
- 6:36They test, tweak, and never stop improving.
- 6:39That's how you build a remote culture that actually works-and lasts.
- 6:39Okay,
- 6:44I feel like that's a perfect place to land today.
- 6:46So-if you're listening and thinking,
- 6:48"We've got work to do"-you're not wrong.
- 6:50But it's totally doable.
- 6:52Just rethink each step.
- 6:53Make it intentional.
- 6:54Edwin, thanks for dropping all this wisdom-seriously.
- 6:54Always a pleasure,
- 6:59Claire.
- 6:59And for everyone out there-keep questioning your old habits...
- 7:02and keep building better teams.
