- 1:26one other gift and one option we do have is the Hillary Kane Mysteries.
- 1:30I listened to these a year ago and I just enjoyed them immensely. They're
- 1:34great detective comedies seven the nineteen thirties. There were produced in the twenty first
- 1:42century by Jim French Productions, but they did a great job on it,
- 1:46and they're just wonderful light mysteries. And we'll send you the complete set set
- 1:53one of Hillary Kane at your request for all donations of seventy five dollars or
- 1:59more. All right, well, now it's Tom first to take a listen
- 2:01to today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dowler. Here now is the Crystal Like
- 2:07Matter, Part five from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Ansel
- 2:16Garrett, Johnny, I'm calling from a gas station up near the three mile
- 2:20Grade, ten miles north of the Lake. Trouble plenty, Johnny, seems
- 2:23like when you go looking for people, it always turns out to be bad
- 2:27luck for them. What do you mean you came up here to Crystal Lake
- 2:30looking for Edward Russell? He turned up. Did you've been looking for hiring
- 2:35the taxi driver? Don't tell me afraid. So we just fished his body
- 2:40out of a ravine Tonight and every weekday Night Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures
- 2:53of the Man with the Action Pactix Bensacount America's Fabulous Freelance insurance Investigator as Truly
- 2:59Johnny Dollar expense account submitted by special investigator Johnny Dollar to Amalgamated Life Associates Home
- 3:17office, Hartford, Connecticut. Following is a final accounting of expenses and report
- 3:22of my investigation of the Crystal Lake matter. It them nine one dollar tip
- 3:30to the garage man. To get my car out in a hurry, I
- 3:32drove up to the three mile grade. Deputy Sheriff Ansel Garrett was waiting for
- 3:36me beside the highway and led the way down the ravine. Watch foot,
- 3:39Johnny, It's pretty tricky. Yeah, who discovered high on his body?
- 3:45One of my boys patrolling the highway. He spotted a glitter metal down here
- 3:47in the moonlight. Here we are, Yeah, oh, brother, Taxi
- 3:57chabinoll what a wreck? Yeah? He crashed the guard room and came down
- 4:03the slope. I doubt if it was an accident. Ants, When the
- 4:06guy's got a bullet hole in his forehead, it's no accident. Johnny looks
- 4:10like the same person who killed Russell killed Hiram to shut his mouth. I
- 4:14guess that's about the size of it. Hiram's murder opens up another keg in
- 4:16nails. Ants now so well. Betty's story is that the last she saw
- 4:20Russell the night he was murdered was when he drove away in Hiram's taxi.
- 4:24But that story depended on Hiram for confirmation. He'll never be able to confirm
- 4:29it now. Earlier tonight you were beat because you were fresh out of suspects,
- 4:32Johnny. Now you got a real live one again. Maybe, but
- 4:34trying to find a motive to fit Betty Norton as a blind alley. The
- 4:39only one who could benefit financially from Russell's death is his wife Leona, and
- 4:43she was in Denver at the time. I still think Russell's murder ties in
- 4:46with the fact that he came up here looking for somebody named Bill, and
- 4:48apparently he had it in for him and could be trouble is Johnny, We
- 4:51got too many guys by that name at Crystal Lake, Bill Cullen, the
- 4:55hotel bartender, Bill Jensen at the boathouse. Both of them are still possibilities
- 4:59ants. The bartender had a fight with Russell on the night of the murder,
- 5:01and it was one of Bill Jensen's padlocks on the cabin where the body
- 5:04was found. Yeah, it's true enough. Whoever killed Russell and hid his
- 5:09body and Bixby's vacant cabin, didn't know that Bixby was planning on selling the
- 5:13place and would bring somebody up to show it and discover the body. Sounds
- 5:15real convincing, Johnny. Now all you have to do is figure out somebody's
- 5:18name for the whoever and a good motive, and you're all sah, yeah,
- 5:23sure, real simple. You know. One thing that's been bothering me
- 5:26from the start, though, Why did the killer plant Russell's body in a
- 5:30cabin with all the wide open spaces around here? Why a cabin? Yeah?
- 5:33He could have figured dogs or animals that uncover the body was outside somewhere.
- 5:38How about the lake. The bodies have a way of coming to the
- 5:41surface. Yeah, I guess you're right. If we could only have gotten
- 5:44the hiring before this. You haven't to know where he lived. A little
- 5:47rooming house not far from the hotel you threw here. No, not yet,
- 5:50Johnny. I got a couple of my boys beating the bush around here.
- 5:54Okay, I'll head back to town and see if I can turn up
- 5:56anything of interest at Hiron's rooming house. On the way back to the village,
- 6:04I stopped at Betty Norton's Lake Shaw mentioned but she wasn't at home.
- 6:09Her housekeeper told me she'd gone to Denver for a couple of days. On
- 6:13hearing that, my interest in her as a suspect shot up again. Expencer
- 6:15contadem ten a dollar forty five long distance call to the Denver Police, requesting
- 6:20them to try to locate Betty Norton for further questioning. And I went to
- 6:25the rooming house where hirem had lived. I couldn't find anything in his room
- 6:28that would give me a lead on his killer. But as I was coming
- 6:30out, I found someone in the hall home white Well, Bill the bartender.
- 6:36Oh hello, Dolly, what are you doing here? Real sample?
- 6:41I live here all same rooming house as Hiram. Huh that's right, How
- 6:46look I'll go trying to tie me into his mortar. We was friend.
- 6:49I didn't know the news of his killing was out. How did you know
- 6:53he was dead? Bill Well? I just talked to one of Vance Garrett's
- 6:58boys at the hotel. He talked, Oh I see, No, you
- 7:01don't see, Dolly, you still fight. Look, whoever killed Hiram is
- 7:04the same one who killed Russell. You had a fight with Russell on the
- 7:06night of his death. Yeah, I explained that to you before. He
- 7:10was looking for somebody named Bill. He thought I was Doe. Got tough
- 7:14about it, but that's all I was to it. I didn't kill him.
- 7:17I didn't kill Hiram. You'll never prove it. I did. Yeah,
- 7:25going round and round on the Merry Go Round. Somewhere along the line,
- 7:30I must have missed something, but I didn't know what. I decided
- 7:34to go back and start from the beginning in this case, Bixby's cabin where
- 7:38Russell's body was discovered. I found Bixby in the hotel bar Ahi Dollar here
- 7:45for a dream. No, no thanks, Bixby. Yeah. I got
- 7:47a little good news earlier this evening. Sheriff Garrett told me he was through
- 7:53checking over my cabin so I can get it cleaned up and repainted. Now
- 7:57you're going to advertise it again. Too optimistic about my chances of selling it
- 8:01that even though the location of it's been kept out of the papers, everybody
- 8:05at Crystal Lake here knows about it. Eh. You never found out who
- 8:11put that new padlock on the door? Huh? All the lock came from
- 8:13Jensen's boathouse. But we have been able to tie in Bill Jensen with any
- 8:18of the rest of it. Look, Bixby, you mind if I take
- 8:20another look around your cabin? Not at all rally you want me to go
- 8:24with you? Now, that won't be necessary. Okay, here's the key.
- 8:28Help yourself. It was my last chance. Maybe there was something in
- 8:33the cabin that neither Ansell, Garrett nor I had noticed before. Something anything
- 8:37that would give me a lead. I spent an hour going through an inch
- 8:41by inch, and I drew a great, big blank. Everything was in
- 8:45place, nothing had been touched, even my cigarette butt on the front porch
- 8:48and Bixby's cigar wrapper twisted in a knot where we'd sat and talked after he'd
- 8:52re enacted the discovery of Russell's body inside. Only marks on the floor where
- 8:58Ansel Garrett's boys had measured the distance of the body from the door. Stuff
- 9:01like that. But as far as anything that would give me a fresh lead,
- 9:05there was nothing, nothing at all. I was licked and I knew
- 9:07it. Oh, mister Dollar, good evening, missus Russell. I just
- 9:24dropped in to say goodbye. Well, that was very thoughtful of you.
- 9:28Please come in. Thanks. When are you leaving? I'm checking out in
- 9:35the morning. What are your plans, I'm not sure, mister dollar.
- 9:39I'll probably get rid of the house in Denver and take an apartment for a
- 9:43while after that. I don't know. Have you filed your claim yet on
- 9:46your husband's insurance policy? No, not yet. My lawyer will take care
- 9:50of it for me. I'd rather not have any more to do with things
- 9:52like that personally than I can help. Mister Dollar. Have you gotten anywhere
- 9:58with your investigation? Have you found anyone at all who could have had a
- 10:01reason to kill my husband? To tell you the truth, missus Russell.
- 10:07Up to now, I've got no Then I saw it something in Leona Russell's
- 10:13room, just a little thing, but all of a sudden the whole deal
- 10:16slid neatly into place. But I had to be sure somehow. I had
- 10:20to start the ball rolling and see what happened. You were saying, mister
- 10:26Dollar. Oh, yeah, I was saying that. Up to now,
- 10:30I haven't been able to get any What time is it a quarter to ten?
- 10:35Oh? I got to make a phone call. Mind if I use
- 10:37your phone? No, not at all. I was supposed to call Deputy
- 10:41Sheriff Garrett to check on a new lead and if it's panned out. Looks
- 10:46like we're in Deputy Sheriff Garrett Johnny Dollar, Ant's how's that new lead?
- 10:58Look? What new lead? Yeah? Good? Oh, maybe putting on
- 11:05an act for somebody, Johnny. That's right. It looks like we're on
- 11:09the right track at last. Hi, you can't beat a lab test.
- 11:11Thanks Ants. Something new has developed, mister Dollar. Yeah, looks like
- 11:16we're finally closing in on the right man, Missus Russell, I got a
- 11:20run. Now I've got a date with the sheriff, but I'll keep you
- 11:22posted. I went outside a hotel cottage and waited. I could hear her
- 11:31on the phone. In a moment, she came out, started along the
- 11:33trail near the lake shore. I followed. I was sure I was finally
- 11:37getting close to Russell's killer, but then a gun barrel on my back told
- 11:41me I'd gotten a little too close. Holder Dollar, Well, mister Bixby
- 11:46surprised. As a matter of fact, no is that you, Bill?
- 11:54Hello, Leona, are super little falling for a gig, Like just pulled
- 12:00on you. But I had to talk to you to warn you. It
- 12:01looks like you're a little stupid too, Bixby. I just spotted one of
- 12:05them and Leona's cottage. I truly I should never come to your cottage of
- 12:09the owner you insisted. I had to see that. That's what threw me
- 12:11about you. Bixby, Clarence Bixby, but a middle name of William.
- 12:15Huh, Wilfred. If it'll do you any good now, it was you
- 12:18and Leona right from the start. Her husband found out about it, but
- 12:20all he had to go on was the name Bill. Somehow he got a
- 12:24lead that brought him up here to Crystal Life. Of course I arranged for
- 12:26him to get the lead. Yeah, you wanted to be easy to find.
- 12:30You had hire him the taxi driver to Corey Russell to you, then
- 12:33killed him to shut his mouth Bill get rid of him. Then you killed
- 12:35Russell in your own cabin and left his body. I had to the people
- 12:39of the next cabin moved in that night. I was afraid they'd see me
- 12:41if I moved the body. So you played it smart. You stole a
- 12:43padlot from Bill Jensen to throw suspicion on him. Then you advertised your cabin
- 12:48and discovered the body. When a prospect wanted to see the place, a
- 12:52pretty neat cover. Bixby you had a lot of nights. I still have
- 12:54dollar enough to do what has to be done now. And sweet little Leona
- 13:00ustle the poor grieving wife in it with you right from the start. Hurry
- 13:03up and do it, Bill, then you and I can go. Oh
- 13:05no, that's for your wrong, Leona. It's not gonna be you and
- 13:09I anymore. Bill. You can't say that you engineered the whole deal right
- 13:11from the start. And I'm sick of it. I'm getting out. You
- 13:13can't get out, Bill, You hear me, You can't your in.
- 13:16This is as deep as I am. Yes, I can get out,
- 13:20all right, Leona. I know one good way. Oh yes, I've
- 13:24used it before and it works. He is for you, baby, Bill.
- 13:28No, Bill, he swung the gun, Tater. I drove out
- 13:33him, but too late. I hit him twice in the face and down.
- 13:41I've been of a leonor. But she was gone. She must have
- 13:46been dead when she hit the ground. Eleventh and final item on expense account
- 13:54one hundred and forty five dollars and twenty cents. Transportation and incidentals from Crystal
- 13:58Lake Home. Total expenses four hundred and twenty three dollars. Even remarks about
- 14:03Bixby in jail awaiting trial on three counts of murder. Edward Russell hiram Leona
- 14:09Russell about Leona whod engineered the whole deal for a payoff. Well she got
- 14:15paid off, all right. End of remarks. End of report. Yours
- 14:18truly, Johnny Dollar. Now here's our star to tell you about next week's
- 14:35story next week, beginning on Friday night, because I'm sure you'll want to
- 14:39listen to the Republican Convention Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
- 14:43A simple string of beads, and each bead on it a motive for
- 14:48murder. Join us, won't you? Yours truly, Johnny Dollar? Yours
- 15:05truly, Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood, written
- 15:11by Robert Rife. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in
- 15:16this week's cast were Dick Krenner, Charlotte Lawrence, Gene Tatum, Howard mcneer
- 15:20Forres Lewis and herb Ellis. Musical supervision by Amerigo Marino. Remember, next
- 15:26week's story will start on Friday night because of the Republican Convention on Monday,
- 15:31Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. So join us Friday a week from tonight,
- 15:35same time in station for another exciting story of yours truly, Johnny Dollar Roy
- 15:39Rowan speaking, welcome back. Well, a solid ending to this story,
- 16:07though we had a few hents along the way that it was at least in
- 16:12terms of the mister Bixie b being one of the killers. The big thing
- 16:18was, I think it was part two or part three where they really called
- 16:23attention to the knots he todd with the cigar wrappers, kind of out of
- 16:29nowhere. It just buged Johnny, and we don't get a ton of physical
- 16:33details, and usually when we do, it is something that matters. And
- 16:37of course the point at the series in which he visited Missus Russell also really
- 16:45gave a clue because at that point, without a murderer, you kind of
- 16:48sense that the next person Johnny visits is probably going to be in on it.
- 16:56Now we turn to listener comments and feedback, and we had this from
- 17:00Mary regarding episode eleven twenty nine, The Indestructible Mike Matter, Part five,
- 17:10and she said, you hi, Adam, I was going to wait till
- 17:14I caught up to all episodes, but figure out I'll do it now.
- 17:15Love the show, I put a number of podcast on hold as I catch
- 17:19up to great detectors of Old time Radio. Just finished episode eleven twenty nine
- 17:25of Johnny Doller loving the series and had a few comments. You commented that
- 17:29you didn't like how Johnny didn't have the police coming. I think there's a
- 17:33reason Cosgrove mentioned he had cased the joint. If he had seen a number
- 17:36of cops, he would have known it was a sting and wouldn't have come
- 17:40in. As to how Randy showed up quickly in part four when Johnny was
- 17:42hit right before he passed out, here the voice of the room clerk.
- 17:47Only later was Randy there. The room clerk probably was the one to chase
- 17:51off the bad guys and call the police. I'm guessing in part five Randy
- 17:53was there, probably in playing clothes, figuring Johnny would get in trouble again.
- 17:59In my humble opinion, these aren't very big plot holes compared to other
- 18:03episodes. Probably the best Jack Johnstone written one I've heard I've yet heard.
- 18:08Well, Mary, thanks so much for the comment. I guess in regards
- 18:14to not being afraid that he would scare off Cosgrove, I guess I could
- 18:22say fair enough on that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, you
- 18:26know, when you think about it in detail, but it does happen.
- 18:30It does seem, of course that you could always have a plain clothesmen or
- 18:34to somebody undercover who was a police officer and have some intelligence and how the
- 18:41police would stake would stake things out. But as to Randy appearing, the
- 18:48problem is in that particular episode, Johnny called Randy at the police headquarters,
- 18:55so Randy couldn't also be in the lobby. But I appreciate to listening to
- 19:00the show, your efforts to catch up, and that you cared enough to
- 19:04email. Thanks so much. All right, well now it's time. Oh
- 19:11wait before we actually switch. Another thing that they didn't mention is that they
- 19:18were taking Monday through Thursday of the next week off for the Republican Convention.
- 19:23That wasn't an endorsement of President Eisenhower's re election bit or anything. It was
- 19:30just that people did watch the major political conventions. Well partially it was because
- 19:36some interesting things could happen there. The way they're arranged now there tend to
- 19:41be much more infomercialish, which I think is why they don't get the same
- 19:45degree of audience, but that will lead to a six part serial next week,
- 19:51which means we won't have a second show on Friday next week. What
- 19:56we do this week. So let's go ahead and take a listen to today's
- 20:00episode of Manhunt. And there were four lost episodes between this episode, between
- 20:06last week's episode and this one. This one comes from January eighth of nineteen
- 20:11forty four, and this is the clue of the Salt of the Red Thread
- 20:19man Hunt, the clue of the Red Thread that led to man Hunt.
- 20:34No crime has been committed yet, no murder has been done yet, No
- 20:45man Hunt as the gun yet. Getting ready to take advantag Mike Duke,
- 21:00honest, Dooke, I wasn't gonna testify against you. I only told that
- 21:03to the cops to get him to go easy on me. You ain't gonna
- 21:07testify, Mike. I'm gonna make sure of that. What are you gonna
- 21:11do, Duke, I'm got to see that you get your bad Mike.
- 21:15First, I'm gonna bang your head against the tub like you had an accident.
- 21:18You can't do that. They'll know it's you, Duke. They'll pin
- 21:22it on you, for sure. Not the way I got to figure it
- 21:23out. Your number is up, Mike, right, Oh you got it
- 21:37figured out. It looked like an accident, haven't you do? All figured
- 21:42out? Who will discover it wasn't an accident? Oh well, no,
- 21:48it was cold blooded murder. Who will start the man hunt? Man hunt
- 22:04and the clue of the red thread? Yes, I said you, Drew,
- 22:12and for a very good reason. At your service, Sergeant at your
- 22:15service s and he says, listen, Drew, you don't like it here
- 22:19in your laboratory at headquarters, do you? You're always snooping around murder cases,
- 22:23you and your secretary, aren't you. Well you know why that is,
- 22:26Bill. Sometimes I can pick up things at the scene of a crime
- 22:30that can trade the murderer. And he's done it too, Bill. And
- 22:32he's done it too, Bill, she says, sure he has. But
- 22:36there is such a thing as just a plane everyday accidental death. See,
- 22:40that's why I sent for you to show you one. Come with me.
- 22:44Okay, where are we going? I'll tell you on the way, just
- 22:47a couple of blocks from here. Ready, I'm ready? Who ask you
- 22:51you ready? Drew? Yes? Sure. If I don't get it,
- 22:52I'll explain that too. Come on, I see a guy was getting ready
- 22:59to take a bath. He slipped on a hunker soap, banged his head
- 23:03on the tub and slipped into the water unconscious. He drowned. Get that,
- 23:07yes? Good? Okay, he fell in his bedub right. I'm
- 23:11going to prove to you too that this is one death that had to be
- 23:15accidental. It couldn't have been murdered. Anything been touched, though, anything
- 23:21been touched? He says, no, nothing. Come on, get in
- 23:23the car right in. Pat Okay, I'll get in the other way.
- 23:26Go ahead, Drew. Check. I'll let you know better when Bill gets
- 23:32him buildin. Well. Anyhow, that's the picture. The guy dead in
- 23:37the top death by drowning. The doc says, a lump on his forehead
- 23:42and a piece of soap that caused it all on the floor. Who was
- 23:47he? I knew you'd get around of that. His name was Mike Mallory.
- 23:49Oh, but I was going to testify against Duke Britain. Oh.
- 23:52I bet Duke bumped him off to shut him up. I know one here
- 23:56would pop out with that. Now. Listen, Mike lived in a boarding
- 24:00house next block from here. If you had opened his mouth to yell a
- 24:03dozen people would have hurt him, did they? Did they? She says,
- 24:07No, nobody hurt him because he didn't yell. That's why, because
- 24:10he wasn't murdered. What makes you so sure was accidental? Though? I
- 24:14know it was an accidency. That's why I brought you here to show you
- 24:18that just because a suspicious guy gets knocked gone doesn't mean it was murdered.
- 24:22Get you on here we are. Come on, How hop is it?
- 24:29Huh? I'll help your pet, have your hand? Oh through? This
- 24:32is so stunning, mad at you too? Tell me what makes you so
- 24:37sure it was an accident? Bill? You still haven't told them? Okay?
- 24:41You see the bath tub over flowed and the water started prickling through from
- 24:45under the door. A woman saw it right the door and she found it
- 24:49locked. Somebody could have killed Mike, nowI and then locked them in.
- 24:52Come on, I'll show you why it couldn't be that way. I'm Murphy,
- 24:57that's I'm straight ahead. Well, there was a bathroom door busted in.
- 25:04See cop did that? When the woman screamed? The key is still
- 25:08in the lock on the inside. See and the lock is still turned.
- 25:11But what's more, look up here? See this hook y got those and
- 25:18a lot of whole style bathroom doors. I've seen them on screen doors too,
- 25:22Seeing them on screen door, she says, Who cares? Anyway?
- 25:26You know how they work. You close the door, then drop the hook
- 25:29through the eye. That fits it, But you gotta do it from the
- 25:32inside, eh, all right, So when the cop breaks in, he
- 25:37finds the hook dangling from the door, still through the eye. When he
- 25:41busted the door in, he tore the eye apart from the wood, and
- 25:45look at yourself. Yes, that's right, all right, all right,
- 25:51be living the bet. The hook was in its place, and the lock
- 25:52turned when the cop broke the door. All right, that's all I gotta
- 25:56tell you. Except nobody living could get through that little window up there.
- 26:00I'm seeing that nobody could have been in here to kill Mallory. Are you
- 26:04convinced it was an accident? I am? I probably am too. But
- 26:08it's an awful coincidence that this has to happen just before Duke Britain's try.
- 26:14Co incidence, he says, So it was a coincidence. Who cares?
- 26:18Are you convinced? Is what I want to know? Well, tell you
- 26:21the truth, Bill, I'm not what's this these little ashes on the floor.
- 26:26Who knows. So Mike was smoking before he slip? What's the difference?
- 26:30Just put these ashes in the temple open and take a look at him
- 26:33at the last there. Who are you smiling about, Drew? Think?
- 26:40Just take it. It's funny. Is because of these ashes? Dup Britain
- 26:45burned in the electric chair. I met microscope for an hour. I'm getting
- 26:56a little tired of sitting here watching your patience. My dear you certainly try
- 27:00mine. Have you or haven't you found out anything? I've found out something,
- 27:03but I don't know what it means yet. I know what made the
- 27:07ash we found in that bathroom. Is it a secret? It's a piece
- 27:11of red thread. But I'm going up to see Duke Britain. Am I
- 27:17going? Yes? You're stay here? Oh Duke's tough, no kidding,
- 27:22He just as soon killed you. Always kissing who who's scared? That's right,
- 27:29Drew, take care of yourself when you're tracing that red thread, will
- 27:32you? I will bet? And I've got a hunch that Duke Britain's life
- 27:36is hanging by that same thread. M Homozione, no, but I mean
- 27:48Mike Mowery case too bad about his Actually, yeah, I know how you
- 27:55mean that. Too bad? All right, So I'm not sorry. I
- 27:59came to see joke about a piece of bread. What piece of thread?
- 28:03Red thread? Would you know anything about a piece of red thread? Of
- 28:08course? Not what am I teller? No, No, you're a murderer,
- 28:12duke, and I'm gonna prove it. You left fingerprints on the thread
- 28:17you burned. I couldn't have ever burned with the thread. I think this
- 28:22is a trick, but I gotta be sure. I want to be a
- 28:25little careful with that gun. Dude. I'm not gonna bump you yet.
- 28:29Gotta find out if what you say is possible for us. If it ain't,
- 28:33I'll come back and apologize. If it is, you can bring back
- 28:37burn fingerprints. I'm gonna let you have it. But I'm supposed to hope
- 28:44is that I'm mistaken. Be awful, good boy. If you are with
- 28:48your hands in the back of that chair, I gotta tie you up.
- 28:51Get some ropes somewhere here here we are your hands back of his chip.
- 28:59You know you really don't have to bother Duke. Al wait here till you
- 29:02get back. Yeah, I know your feet. I'll tell you now,
- 29:10I know you was trying that movie to get into the phone unless you think
- 29:11you can dial with with your nose. Second thought, this gag won't be
- 29:17a bad idea. Just stick the phone in this drawer. Yeah, I'll
- 29:23go away with then I I'll be back in fifteen minutes, so long I
- 29:33don't have a gag out in the second. I'm so nervous I'm shaking likely
- 29:38there. All right, Now, get to work in my hands. Will
- 29:41you tell me what you're doing here? Pat? I wanted to beat you
- 29:44out on the case just once. I got here just before you did and
- 29:47hid behind the drape. Not the toughy there. That's got it. Okay,
- 29:53I'll get my legs out myself there. Well what now, I'm glad
- 30:02this is only a one room apartment, Pat. We've got about twelve minutes
- 30:06to turn this joint inside out, and if we're lucky, we're gonna find
- 30:10a little spool of bright red thread. All right, So I brought rithon
- 30:19with me and we're back in the bathroom. This is the cleanest case.
- 30:22I'm going to show you how he murdered Mike Mawory. Bill yees, we
- 30:26should I well, that's right, Bill. Without pat I couldn't have done
- 30:29it much obliged, lady, listen, what in both of them are not
- 30:32shut up? To go ahead through? Okay, Bill, here's what happened
- 30:37in here. Go get Maory's head against the bathtub, gou piece of soap
- 30:42on the floor, and tossed Mike's body in the tub. Then he tied
- 30:45a piece of thread around the hook on the door like I'm doing now,
- 30:51pass it through the eyehole like this. Then pull the thread under the door
- 30:55and went out. And I come on out of every boddy. Okay,
- 30:59but I don't know what this is all about. Then he closed the door.
- 31:03Now he was all set. He took these very thin fires, like
- 31:07the ones they use on a piano to get a narrow space. My fires,
- 31:11Yes, yes, they yours. I found them in your apartment.
- 31:14I'm not lucky. Yeah, you ought to play crivage, he says,
- 31:18Come, Andrew, you're gonna show us. He is on the inside of
- 31:21the door right now, right, it was then Duke concerned the fires in
- 31:25the keyhole from the outside like this, and turn the key. Simple,
- 31:30isn't it? Now? About the thread I tied around the hook when we
- 31:33were all in the bathroom. You'll notice it leads under the door. I'm
- 31:37gonna bend down and gently pull it there. I'll listen. You're that the
- 31:44hook has been guided into place, right in the hole in which it belongs.
- 31:48Yeah, but we didn't find a thread tied around the hook, and
- 31:51a duke had yanked on it to break it off. Afterwards, the knot
- 31:53would have stayed on, Drew, sure it would, but he didn't break
- 31:56it off. This is what he did. I'm gonna like this match and
- 32:00apply it to the bottom of the thread, and the flame, which we
- 32:02can't see anymore, is traveling right up the inside of the bathroom. Dawn
- 32:07is destroying the threat, but it is leading an ash on the floor right.
- 32:10That's how I was able to reconstruct the whole case, matt Ash and
- 32:15later from the school of red bread I found in your apartment, Duke.
- 32:19And oh, by the way, there's no way to bring back finger prints
- 32:22on a print bread now, he tells me, Come on, Duke,
- 32:28true, I'm so ashamed. I insisted that the Mallory death was accidental,
- 32:31like it kill myself, only I'm afraid if I did, you'd find some
- 32:37way of proven somebody murdered me, Welcome back. The execution of the murder
- 32:50and the solution to the case was actually pretty clever, this one having much
- 32:53more of a how catch him? I feel, rather than a who done
- 32:59it? Were told from the beginning that Duke did it. I do feel
- 33:02a little bit for a Sergeant Morton, because the setup for this episode was
- 33:08really awe with Sergeant Morton taking Drew Stevens, a police scientist, to the
- 33:16scene of the crime, in order to prove to Stevens that occasionally people died
- 33:23by accident unless we miss something. In one of the lost episodes, Stevens
- 33:30never gave a great principle that every single death was a result of foul pali.
- 33:36So apparently Sergeant Morton a little desperate to be right, though, he
- 33:40built up a straw man so that he could argue in favor of something that's
- 33:45just complete common sense, and he still can't quite prove himself right. A
- 33:52fair the good Sergeant munt need a vacation, but seriously good episode and uh
- 33:59manhown. We'll return in two weeks, and of course Johnny Dollars starts again
