- Jaba: Hello everybody and welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator Podcast. This is Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards, joined as always by my co-host Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly known as JGB underscore cards underscore. Today we are back to kick off the day with a recap of yesterday's Arizona Fall League action. Today is October twenty first, so we're gonna be talking about the games from yesterday. That was Tuesday, October twentieth. And yeah, let's just get right into it. We had Desert Dogs finally woke up. They must have listened to the pod. So Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: you're welcome, Desert Dog fans. Beat the Segueros ten to three behind a eight run fifth inning. A lot of a lot of the big names didn't really do a ton. Eduardo Quintero, 0 for 3 again, pair of walks, but also a pair of K's. Dylan Lewis had his fifth double of the campaign. Owen Carey, another good Bowman name, had a pair of triples, got that OPS up to nine three. but other than that, there were no major standout performances. I mean, those were all the extra base hits that happened yesterday. Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: Chase Harlan went one for five with a pair of RBIs and a pair of K's. Tate South Essen also one for four with a pair of K's. Wyatt Sanford one for four with one K. Nobody really broke out particularly. Only seven Jheremy: No. Jaba: hits, but they had 11 walks, so they did kind of maximize the base runners they did get on. Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: Xander Muth pitched. He was a guy that was getting a little helium, I believe you said. Jheremy: It looked like people were asking for him and his prices were up I read somewhere, but I don't know about that now. Jaba: Well he he he got rocked. Two thirds of an inning, two earned, Laudahomer, no K's. Christian Mayna er no, that's Brian Mayna, he's not a Bowman guy. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: or on the Següero side, there was actually probably just as much, if not more, to talk about there. Anjou Gomez. Two for four. Doubled. Caught stealing. Now batting three twenty with an eight fifty four OPS, just pretty Unbelievable what he's doing. Again, he's never played above the DSL. He's seventeen years old. First Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: time this has happened since like two thousand fourteen, I believe. And yeah, I don't really know what else to say about him. He's an awesome player. Dynamic. I said kind of before the AFL, so long as he holds his own. I think that's Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: a a plus campaign here. And he's definitely doing a lot more than that. He also started like one for nine, I think. Jheremy: Yeah, at a slow start. Jaba: One for one turn on. So the fact he's up to an eight fifty four OPS, he's not only hitting but he's getting extra base hits. He Jheremy: Okay. Jaba: he's just such an impressive player. And otherwise Arune Escobar, one for four, five ninety four OPS. He was another guy where I was saying it won't take much for his market to kind of rebound a bit after he was a pretty big name. But Jheremy: But he gotta do something. Gotta do something. Jaba: yeah, he he he's not Taking advantage of the opportunity. Boston Barrow, another Met one for three, six thirty-eight OPS. Just not not a ton going. Bruin Agbayani continues to struggle. He is a younger guy from the lower levels who missed most of this year. So I think he gets a bit of a pass, although the 077 batting average is ghastly. whether or not it's excusable, it is tough. Then only other notable one here, Frank Mazcato. He'd been pitching really well. He's had a lot of problems with walks in his pro career, kind of increasingly Jheremy: Okay. Jaba: so. he'd been limiting them pretty well. Not last night, two thirds of an inning, no hits, four walks, one earned. Leads me to believe he just walked the bases loaded, then walked the guy in. Not not the greatest. but yeah. Jheremy: Yep. Probably a safe bet. Jaba: Yeah, Jeremy, what Andy andy had a wild pitch, so that could have been it. Yeah, who knows? But Jeremy Jheremy: Wonderful. Jaba: What what's next here? Jheremy: Yeah, I'm pulling up a thing so I have it here. I'm gonna do the Salt R Salt River Rafters and the P I think it's Peoria Havelena's, right? Yeah. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: I mean we had s six home runs, I believe, for the Rafters and then another couple on the other side. So ball was flying. Definitely seeing some flying baseballs out there. Tao Banks and Jack O'Do Jack O'Dowd both had two apiece home runs. Neither of them have Bowman. Jack O'Dowd is Dan O'Dowd's kid. Vanderbilt, lefty, hitting catcher. Kyle Dubarge putting over the fence. And I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about Dax Kilby hitting his second. He also picked up a double. in terms of our preseason come-up of value, I think that was a out-of-the-park, no pun intended pick for you. He's now hitting 306 with a 1051. Both of the hits, obviously extra base hits with the double and the home run. That is pretty good performance from Dax. Like just holding his own and then proving it again, and obviously anything he does gets put under a microscope because he's a Yankee. Yasso Solaire 0 for four. No punch outs down to a 148 with a 355. But a tweet that came out today has him as the fifth best bat speed in all of Arizona Fall League. I guess it doesn't matter if you have the first, the best, the ninetiet, if you're not putting the barrel on the ball, but at seventy-two point two, he is coming in at number five. Just something worth noting that like it's there, maybe it's an adjustment away from unlocking it. We know he has the strength. It's just a matter of if he can consistently get to it. that remains to be seen. take a quick look at pitching. I don't think there is any pitching of note. There's another A Gomez, but we know Angebel is a batter, not a hitter. And then we flip over and it's Ty Pete once again with his third triple of the year. Like up to a three forty one with a ten sixty OPS. I have to imagine all of his stuff is just starting to balloon right now. Cardinals fans love him. Or Cardinals fans love their guys. Like been in been around since twenty twenty three. Like he's good. Carter Graham, Boston Smith, two guys who put up good numbers this year. Neither of them have Bowman. Both of them are struggling going down the list. Vance Honeycutt another notorious non-Bowman first-rounder. No no Bowman, but hit another home run. Struck out once, 217. The average is kind of bottomed out at 217, but he he it's one of the crazier splits with a 1109 OPS. So it's like when he puts the ball in play, basically it's going over the fence. Which I think you. kind of take to a certain degree. Like that's his third of the year. So with that, I I imagine Typeede had to have stolen a base again, too, right? Wrong. Did not Jaba: Probably no? Jheremy: did not steal a base. the two other home runs, I guess the other home run goes to Mr. DeCrisio, non Bowman guy. And then as we continue to go down the pitching, that's not Kendri Churio, that's not Aaron Watson. That is Nate Dome, though, who had two strikeouts over one inning of clean baseball and Calvin Shapira doesn't have Bowman, just a local name. Arizona kid, somebody I'd seen since he was thirteen. Kind of cool to see him get a hold, one hit. has a seventeen eighteen ERA. But that th those small performances will bring it on down. So that is a quick rundown of the Habalinas and Rafters, which twenty hits and twenty one runs. So that was probably a hard one to watch. Jaba: Yeah, probably a bit of a long game. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: last one, Scorpions beat the Solar Sox nine to six, twenty two total hits in this one. Only seven walks, so a bit more Palatable. Baseball Jet Williams, who I kind of buried yesterday. He came back with a three for five day. he had a double, two stolen bases, didn't strike out, got the OPS all the way up to 597. Another guy who has been struggling, Bryce Rayner. Guess what? That continued. 0 for 2 again with a K. He got pulled after two at bats. OPS down at 422. Not good. Zaire Hope, another OP2. Ofer, O for four. OPS at 714, so the concern level isn't as high. But you'd kind of expect more given his status, Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: where he is in the minors, and just kind of how people view Zyer Hope. think it's not unfair to expect a bit more. Eric Batonti, two for five, para RBIs. He's having a okay campaign. He struck out once, which for him is probably pretty good. no extra base hits. Yeah. Did make a throwing error at first base. Giving me flashbacks Jheremy: Sure. Jaba: to to Pete Alonzo. Dakota Jordan, one for five, four Ks. now he has what, nineteen K's in the AFL? Jheremy: Nineteen tied for the league lead. Jaba: Yeah, I mean that's pretty horrible. Under the hood, you know, a six eighty six OPS is okay. But again, a guy who's a little bit older, he's in double A now, you'd like to see a bit more, and even if he's Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: not getting the results, you don't want to see him leading the league in K's. Neymar Ochoa Jr., one of my cheap picks. He came out of the gates hot, cooled down fast, but he homered again yesterday, which is good to see. He also stole his sixth base of the AFL, so he's making things happen out there. Nick Monasteri, two home run game, two for four. He was a 26 Bowman guy, right? 998 Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Yep. Jaba: OPS for him. nothing nothing that looks too interesting on the pitching side. Jake Bloss for the Solar Sox. Two and two thirds, one earned, no walks, six Ks. Only Blemish was one of the solo home runs. It was the Neymar Ochoa home run. Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: but pretty pretty nice outing for him. As far as hitters go, Jake Cook one for five para Ks. That's kind of who he is. He's gonna get on base, he's fast, and he's gonna strike. out a lot. Arjun Demal another one for four just chugging along here. Third double of the campaign, 968 OPS. And then yeah, Bracing Guidez, another one for four with a pair of K's. He's been striking out a lot, not having the greatest campaign. Juan Cabada, one for three pair of K's, but he doubled. OPS down at 535. But yeah, that's that's really it. I mean it it is interesting seeing guys like Bryce Rayner, Zaire, Hope. Even just from this game, Dakota Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: Jordan, a lot a lot of guys are struggling a lot more than I thought they would. And Jheremy: Great. Jaba: I I do want to say again, it's not like there's zero pitching in the AFL, but if you pull up any given box score, it it's not exactly a list of household names. Jheremy: There's there's not a lot of clean clean lines as we go through these, it's like, maybe you got through an inning clean, but like and I and I get it too, right? Like we look and all the pitching is like one inning, two innings, like you're not getting multiple at bats really against any of these guys and you may or may not know who they are. But still, like a lot of these guys aren't putting up clean lines as it is, so somebody's doing something. We just need it to be the the correct names if you're holding their cards. Jaba: Yeah. Yeah. I think again, we're just over two weeks in. They have probably four weeks left. There's plenty of time for guys to turn things around. But Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: there's a pretty decent list of guys. I I would say there's almost as many guys that are underwhelming as there are kind of meeting high expectations and Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: br I wouldn't say breaking out, but having really nice campaigns. So something to follow there. Jheremy: Right. Yep. Jaba: yet yesterday I previewed three pitchers. I said they were pitching last night. That was wrong. They're all pitching tonight. So that was what, Takole Roby, Justin Lamkin, and Jarlon Susana. Jheremy: Sounds correct. Jaba: Those are three to watch the box scores on tonight. We were gonna Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: do a pitcher episode, but we kinda decided we should see what those guys do tonight. So we'll have a AFL pitcher episode for you guys yesterday when we get some more results from bigger names. And yeah, you got anything else here or we good to wrap? Jheremy: I think that's about it. Matthew Wood had his first strikeout of the AFL, but he also only has fourteen at bats. But it's kinda wild. And I it's a twenty twenty three name that nobody probably has like stacked up, right? But fourteen game fourteen at bats. He has eleven walks to one strikeout. It's just like one of those fun little quirky baseball things, I guess. But picked up his first strikeout. I got nothing else though. No. Jaba: Alright. Well, we'll wrap it there. We're gonna follow this up with another Ask the Scout episode. I'm always very excited to film those. We got some good reader questions or listener questions rather. And we'll see you guys over there for that. So thanks as always for listening and let's go, Matt. See ya guys.
