- 1:00:00I just came back
- 1:00:01from watching the
- 1:00:02movie Ocean
- 1:00:02narrated by Sir
- 1:00:04David
- 1:00:04Attenborough and
- 1:00:05I have to admit I
- 1:00:06loved it
- 1:00:07I'm not usually a
- 1:00:08huge fan of
- 1:00:09documentaries
- 1:00:10that are
- 1:00:10this size
- 1:00:11Although
- 1:00:11everything Sir
- 1:00:12David
- 1:00:13Attenborough is a
- 1:00:13part of seems to
- 1:00:14do really well
- 1:00:15and I
- 1:00:15really like it
- 1:00:16But over the last
- 1:00:17couple of years
- 1:00:17there have been
- 1:00:18some
- 1:00:18documentaries
- 1:00:18have come out
- 1:00:19I'm not even
- 1:00:20gonna mention
- 1:00:20some of them that
- 1:00:21have been totally
- 1:00:21off. I really
- 1:00:23like this movie
- 1:00:24I'm gonna talk
- 1:00:24about what I
- 1:00:25liked why I like
- 1:00:26the message of
- 1:00:27hope and also
- 1:00:28we're gonna talk
- 1:00:29about some of the
- 1:00:29Controversies in
- 1:00:30this movie
- 1:00:31because there's
- 1:00:31always
- 1:00:32controversial
- 1:00:32there's criticism
- 1:00:33from the fishing
- 1:00:34industry
- 1:00:34We're gonna talk
- 1:00:35about the bottom
- 1:00:36trawling that was
- 1:00:37talked about in
- 1:00:37this movie as
- 1:00:38well as the
- 1:00:39marine protected
- 1:00:40areas that was
- 1:00:40talked about
- 1:00:41In this movie on
- 1:00:42this episode of
- 1:00:43the how to
- 1:00:43protect the ocean
- 1:00:43podcast. Let's
- 1:00:44start the show
- 1:00:48Hey everybody,
- 1:00:48welcome back to
- 1:00:49another exciting
- 1:00:49episode of the
- 1:00:50how to protect
- 1:00:50the ocean podcast
- 1:00:51I'm your host
- 1:00:52Andrew Lewin and
- 1:00:52this is the
- 1:00:53podcast where you
- 1:00:53find out what's
- 1:00:54happening with
- 1:00:54the ocean how you
- 1:00:55could
- 1:00:55speak up for
- 1:00:56The ocean and
- 1:00:56what you can do
- 1:00:57to live for a
- 1:00:58better ocean by
- 1:00:59taking action on
- 1:01:00today's episode
- 1:01:01We're gonna be
- 1:01:01talking about a
- 1:01:02movie that I just
- 1:01:02came back from
- 1:01:03seeing
- 1:01:03called ocean
- 1:01:04It's really tells
- 1:01:05you exactly what
- 1:01:06it's all about
- 1:01:07ocean is by Sir
- 1:01:08David
- 1:01:08Attenborough
- 1:01:08narrated by Sir
- 1:01:09David
- 1:01:09Attenborough
- 1:01:10He is 99 years
- 1:01:11old folks
- 1:01:1299 and for the
- 1:01:13past
- 1:01:14couple of years
- 1:01:14He's been working
- 1:01:15on this movie
- 1:01:16that was released
- 1:01:17in theaters and
- 1:01:18selected theaters
- 1:01:18It was a small
- 1:01:20venue for me that
- 1:01:21I went to him
- 1:01:21usually go to
- 1:01:22these big big
- 1:01:23epic movies
- 1:01:24This is a small
- 1:01:24movie, but it was
- 1:01:26packed with great
- 1:01:27messaging some
- 1:01:28controversies
- 1:01:29I want to kind of
- 1:01:30clear up a little
- 1:01:30bit and also it
- 1:01:32just opens the
- 1:01:33conversation to a
- 1:01:34lot more
- 1:01:35Let's just say
- 1:01:36that and I think
- 1:01:36it's really great
- 1:01:37that it does that
- 1:01:38it was released
- 1:01:39on purpose before
- 1:01:40the ocean decade
- 1:01:41conference
- 1:01:42In Nice France
- 1:01:43and even mentions
- 1:01:43it in the film
- 1:01:44and it's
- 1:01:45something where
- 1:01:46it's like hey,
- 1:01:46you know what?
- 1:01:47We need to really
- 1:01:47be able to
- 1:01:48protect our
- 1:01:48oceans and land
- 1:01:50But our oceans
- 1:01:50especially and we
- 1:01:52need to do that
- 1:01:52at this
- 1:01:53conference and we
- 1:01:53need to get some
- 1:01:54great results
- 1:01:55So it's calling
- 1:01:55on all the
- 1:01:56negotiators at
- 1:01:57this conference
- 1:01:58to come out with some
- 1:01:58great results
- 1:01:59I will actually
- 1:01:59be there at that
- 1:02:00conference
- 1:02:01So I'll give you
- 1:02:02the lowdown of
- 1:02:02what I
- 1:02:03experienced and
- 1:02:03what I saw at
- 1:02:05this conference
- 1:02:05I'm going to a
- 1:02:06bunch of side
- 1:02:06events not the
- 1:02:07main conference,
- 1:02:07but I'm sure
- 1:02:07there's gonna be
- 1:02:08lots to
- 1:02:08talk about
- 1:02:09So let's get into
- 1:02:10the movie of why
- 1:02:11I loved
- 1:02:12this movie
- 1:02:12It really comes
- 1:02:13out to the
- 1:02:14messaging the
- 1:02:15messaging of hope
- 1:02:16a lot of times
- 1:02:17I've seen these
- 1:02:18documentaries and
- 1:02:19they talk a lot
- 1:02:20about the
- 1:02:21destruction
- 1:02:21that's happening
- 1:02:22a lot of times
- 1:02:23they cover
- 1:02:23everything
- 1:02:24You know, you're
- 1:02:24looking at the
- 1:02:25major ones over
- 1:02:26fishing
- 1:02:26climate change
- 1:02:28plastic pollution
- 1:02:29water quality
- 1:02:30problems with
- 1:02:31other pollution
- 1:02:32like industrial
- 1:02:33pollution
- 1:02:34and so forth
- 1:02:35Development along
- 1:02:36coastal lines
- 1:02:37aquaculture and
- 1:02:37so forth. There's
- 1:02:38a lot of things
- 1:02:39that they
- 1:02:40like to cover
- 1:02:40There's you know
- 1:02:41a couple of them
- 1:02:42have covered like
- 1:02:43coral bleaching
- 1:02:44and the messaging
- 1:02:45is very
- 1:02:45depressing
- 1:02:46throughout the
- 1:02:46entire film
- 1:02:47There's no
- 1:02:48message of hope
- 1:02:48and they really
- 1:02:49talk about the
- 1:02:50conservation
- 1:02:50aspect of it in
- 1:02:52the last five
- 1:02:52minutes sometimes
- 1:02:53even in
- 1:02:54the credits
- 1:02:55These aren't
- 1:02:56great
- 1:02:56documentaries
- 1:02:57because they're
- 1:02:58good at telling
- 1:02:58you what is wrong
- 1:03:00They're not going
- 1:03:00to tell you how
- 1:03:01you can do and
- 1:03:02you just leave
- 1:03:02the people with
- 1:03:04this pessimism of
- 1:03:05the ocean of
- 1:03:06what's happening
- 1:03:07Around our planet
- 1:03:08and to a point
- 1:03:09where people are
- 1:03:10just giving up.
- 1:03:11It's like well if
- 1:03:11we can't do
- 1:03:11anything
- 1:03:12who cares
- 1:03:12I'm just
- 1:03:13gonna give up
- 1:03:14It's almost like
- 1:03:15eating and
- 1:03:15getting on a diet
- 1:03:16if you don't see
- 1:03:17the results that
- 1:03:18you want
- 1:03:18right away
- 1:03:18You can get off
- 1:03:19that diet and you
- 1:03:20almost eat worse
- 1:03:21than what you did
- 1:03:21before when you
- 1:03:22restrict yourself
- 1:03:23So it's really
- 1:03:24important that
- 1:03:25messaging that
- 1:03:26comes out of
- 1:03:27these
- 1:03:27documentaries
- 1:03:27like ocean
- 1:03:29Has to be
- 1:03:30positive has to
- 1:03:31show hope we love
- 1:03:32movies with
- 1:03:33hope humans
- 1:03:34Love stories with
- 1:03:35hope hence the
- 1:03:36Star Wars
- 1:03:36trilogies have
- 1:03:38been great with
- 1:03:38messages of hope
- 1:03:40That's what it's
- 1:03:41all about and
- 1:03:42that's what ocean
- 1:03:43is all about.
- 1:03:44It's about hope
- 1:03:44the movie
- 1:03:45starts off
- 1:03:46You know spoiler
- 1:03:47warning there's
- 1:03:48not much spoilers
- 1:03:49in this one
- 1:03:49But spoiler
- 1:03:49warning the movie
- 1:03:50starts off
- 1:03:51showing the
- 1:03:52beauty of the
- 1:03:53ocean what I
- 1:03:53really love about
- 1:03:54it right at the
- 1:03:55beginning
- 1:03:55It ties the
- 1:03:57connection of the
- 1:03:57deep sea to the
- 1:03:59surface right off
- 1:04:00the bat. We see a
- 1:04:01bait ball
- 1:04:01We see a bunch of
- 1:04:02sharks. We see
- 1:04:03dolphins
- 1:04:03We see whales and
- 1:04:05then we all of a
- 1:04:05sudden we see sea
- 1:04:06mounts and David
- 1:04:07Adam Brill's
- 1:04:08talking about how
- 1:04:08sea mounts play
- 1:04:09an important
- 1:04:09Role to bring up
- 1:04:11nutrients from
- 1:04:11the bottom of the
- 1:04:12ocean the deep
- 1:04:13sea to the
- 1:04:13surface to feed
- 1:04:15all of these
- 1:04:16traveling species
- 1:04:17It's really
- 1:04:18really well done
- 1:04:19and then talks a
- 1:04:20lot about the
- 1:04:21canyons that are
- 1:04:21down there and
- 1:04:22how many sea
- 1:04:23mounts are
- 1:04:23down there
- 1:04:23Where they are
- 1:04:24and they show
- 1:04:24this almost 3d
- 1:04:26image of the
- 1:04:27bottom of the
- 1:04:27ocean really
- 1:04:28giving a
- 1:04:29perspective
- 1:04:29of how?
- 1:04:31Productive the
- 1:04:31ocean can be I
- 1:04:33think a lot of
- 1:04:33times when we see
- 1:04:34open ocean we see
- 1:04:35it as a barren
- 1:04:36Waterway a barren
- 1:04:37just a water
- 1:04:38column and we
- 1:04:39don't see much
- 1:04:39happening other
- 1:04:40than maybe a
- 1:04:41whale or two or
- 1:04:42maybe a shark
- 1:04:43That's you know
- 1:04:43traveling from
- 1:04:44one place to
- 1:04:44another we don't
- 1:04:45think about the
- 1:04:46connection
- 1:04:46between the deep
- 1:04:47sea and the
- 1:04:48surface was
- 1:04:49right away
- 1:04:49I think it really
- 1:04:50brings up
- 1:04:50the you know
- 1:04:51How we're messing
- 1:04:52around with the
- 1:04:53deep sea too much
- 1:04:54talking about
- 1:04:54deep sea mining
- 1:04:55and so forth
- 1:04:56really gives
- 1:04:56people
- 1:04:57perspective that
- 1:04:57it's all
- 1:04:58Connected and
- 1:04:59that we need to
- 1:04:59be careful
- 1:05:00doesn't mention
- 1:05:01deep sea mining
- 1:05:01But you kind of
- 1:05:02like somebody who
- 1:05:03covers ocean all
- 1:05:04the time
- 1:05:04I'm like this is
- 1:05:05a great way to
- 1:05:06get people to
- 1:05:06really think
- 1:05:07about the deep
- 1:05:07sea and how it's
- 1:05:09connected to the
- 1:05:09surface and how
- 1:05:10we could benefit
- 1:05:11as humans and
- 1:05:12bringing up
- 1:05:12plankton that you
- 1:05:14know bring in a
- 1:05:15third of the
- 1:05:15carbon
- 1:05:15dioxide and
- 1:05:16Absorb the third
- 1:05:17of the carbon
- 1:05:17dioxide in our
- 1:05:18atmosphere and
- 1:05:19how important
- 1:05:20that is just from
- 1:05:21a climate change
- 1:05:21reduction point
- 1:05:22of view and it
- 1:05:23Doesn't talk
- 1:05:23about the
- 1:05:23productive nature
- 1:05:25of upwellings
- 1:05:26Which is bringing
- 1:05:27nutrients from
- 1:05:27the deep sea to
- 1:05:28the surface so
- 1:05:29that animals can
- 1:05:30like whales and
- 1:05:31dolphins and tuna
- 1:05:32and all
- 1:05:32those animals
- 1:05:33Can feed off of
- 1:05:34especially if
- 1:05:35they're migratory
- 1:05:35species. It was a
- 1:05:36great way of
- 1:05:37depicting it
- 1:05:37I loved right off
- 1:05:38the bat just
- 1:05:39depicting it
- 1:05:40right away. I
- 1:05:40thought it was
- 1:05:41really well done
- 1:05:42I did something
- 1:05:42that I think we
- 1:05:43need to know from
- 1:05:44a perspective
- 1:05:45then it starts
- 1:05:46talking about
- 1:05:46different
- 1:05:47Habitats around
- 1:05:48the world, you
- 1:05:49know, we see
- 1:05:50areas in Africa.
- 1:05:51We see areas in
- 1:05:53the northern UK
- 1:05:54We see areas into
- 1:05:56the Channel
- 1:05:56Islands and we
- 1:05:57see a lot of
- 1:05:58different areas a
- 1:05:59lot of different
- 1:05:59like kelp forests
- 1:06:00And then we see
- 1:06:01these scallop
- 1:06:02beds we get to
- 1:06:03see these coral
- 1:06:03reefs like in the
- 1:06:04Indo-Pacific and
- 1:06:05so forth
- 1:06:06It's just a
- 1:06:06really good
- 1:06:07depiction of the
- 1:06:08different types
- 1:06:09of environments
- 1:06:09that are around
- 1:06:10talks
- 1:06:11about you know
- 1:06:11The discovery of
- 1:06:12this massive
- 1:06:13seagrass bed that
- 1:06:14we discovered a
- 1:06:15couple of
- 1:06:15years ago
- 1:06:16That was
- 1:06:16discovered by
- 1:06:17work done by dr
- 1:06:18Austin Gallagher
- 1:06:19friend of the
- 1:06:19podcast in his
- 1:06:21team of beneath
- 1:06:21the waves
- 1:06:22It was great to
- 1:06:23see all these
- 1:06:23depicted wasn't
- 1:06:24just coral reefs
- 1:06:25that
- 1:06:26showed benefit
- 1:06:26It was all these
- 1:06:27different
- 1:06:27habitats that had
- 1:06:28beautiful colors
- 1:06:29and fish from all
- 1:06:30over and people
- 1:06:31talking about
- 1:06:31How important it
- 1:06:32is for them to
- 1:06:33fish talked
- 1:06:34a lot about?
- 1:06:35artisanal fishers
- 1:06:36so local fishers
- 1:06:38that are
- 1:06:38really just
- 1:06:39Benefiting
- 1:06:39themselves by
- 1:06:40fishing and want
- 1:06:41to fish for
- 1:06:42generations and
- 1:06:43generations
- 1:06:43generations are
- 1:06:44looking to be
- 1:06:45more sustainable
- 1:06:46Working with
- 1:06:47probably
- 1:06:47scientists and
- 1:06:48governments and
- 1:06:49so forth to be
- 1:06:50more sustainable
- 1:06:51And I think
- 1:06:51that's a really
- 1:06:52important message
- 1:06:53Especially as
- 1:06:54they get more and
- 1:06:55more into the
- 1:06:56movie because
- 1:06:56when they get
- 1:06:57into the movie
- 1:06:57they talk about
- 1:06:59Industrial
- 1:06:59fishing in this
- 1:07:00movie they're
- 1:07:01focusing on
- 1:07:01industrial
- 1:07:02trawling and they
- 1:07:03even have
- 1:07:04cameras that are
- 1:07:05hooked up to the
- 1:07:06trolls multiple
- 1:07:06angle cameras
- 1:07:07that are hooked
- 1:07:08up to a trial to
- 1:07:09show how
- 1:07:10Devastating a
- 1:07:10trawl could be a
- 1:07:12trawl that comes
- 1:07:12through I've
- 1:07:13talked about this
- 1:07:14a number of times
- 1:07:14We'll go
- 1:07:15over quickly
- 1:07:15It has these
- 1:07:16doors that sink
- 1:07:17and open up the
- 1:07:18net it has a
- 1:07:19chain that
- 1:07:19connects the
- 1:07:20doors at the
- 1:07:20beginning the
- 1:07:20entrance of
- 1:07:21The nets a
- 1:07:21massive net that
- 1:07:22trails behind and
- 1:07:23then it just
- 1:07:24scrapes
- 1:07:25the bottom
- 1:07:26With that chain
- 1:07:27and it takes
- 1:07:27everything every
- 1:07:28fish and critter
- 1:07:29that's in there
- 1:07:30and it'll
- 1:07:30put it up now
- 1:07:31We're gonna talk
- 1:07:32a little bit more
- 1:07:33in a bit about
- 1:07:34trawling and how
- 1:07:35they could be
- 1:07:35changed and how
- 1:07:36it's
- 1:07:36optimized to be
- 1:07:37A little better
- 1:07:38we're gonna talk
- 1:07:39about that in a
- 1:07:40bit, but that's
- 1:07:40what it shows
- 1:07:41It shows kind of
- 1:07:41the devastation
- 1:07:42that it leaves
- 1:07:43You know in its
- 1:07:44path as this wide
- 1:07:46opening say 10
- 1:07:47foot may 20 foot
- 1:07:48wide opening net
- 1:07:49Just destroys
- 1:07:49everything in its
- 1:07:50path and it goes
- 1:07:51for a certain
- 1:07:51amount of
- 1:07:52kilometers and
- 1:07:52then it pans out
- 1:07:53to a drone
- 1:07:54It shows the
- 1:07:54different paths
- 1:07:55which are very
- 1:07:56narrow paths, you
- 1:07:57know, just to
- 1:07:58look at it from
- 1:07:58that perspective
- 1:07:59But we're gonna
- 1:08:00talk a little bit
- 1:08:00about why they're
- 1:08:01showing these
- 1:08:02trolls because
- 1:08:02they're talking
- 1:08:02about how
- 1:08:03trolls are
- 1:08:04Allowed to go and
- 1:08:05pretty much
- 1:08:05anywhere in
- 1:08:06certain countries
- 1:08:07in the UK. There
- 1:08:08was a study that
- 1:08:09was released
- 1:08:09I think I covered
- 1:08:10it on the podcast
- 1:08:1090% of the MPAs
- 1:08:13in the UK allow
- 1:08:14bottom trawling
- 1:08:15now if you think
- 1:08:16about an MPa
- 1:08:17Which it talks
- 1:08:17about in the
- 1:08:18episode as one of
- 1:08:19those
- 1:08:19hopeful things
- 1:08:20It says look
- 1:08:20here's this
- 1:08:21fishing this
- 1:08:21devastating fish
- 1:08:22in that if you
- 1:08:23use trawling over
- 1:08:24and over and over
- 1:08:25again the
- 1:08:26same area
- 1:08:26It's gonna
- 1:08:27destroy the
- 1:08:27habitat and we'll
- 1:08:28get into that a
- 1:08:29little bit, but
- 1:08:30we could get
- 1:08:31away from it
- 1:08:31It talks a lot
- 1:08:32about this
- 1:08:32depressing stuff
- 1:08:33and you get
- 1:08:33depressing
- 1:08:34I was watching
- 1:08:34with my daughter
- 1:08:35my daughter says
- 1:08:35she even cried in
- 1:08:36certain
- 1:08:36situations there
- 1:08:37because it was so
- 1:08:38depressing
- 1:08:38to see these
- 1:08:39animals suffering
- 1:08:40like
- 1:08:40invertebrates and
- 1:08:41so forth and just
- 1:08:42a barren sea
- 1:08:42after seeing such
- 1:08:43a productive area
- 1:08:45But then it goes
- 1:08:46into some hope it
- 1:08:47says hey
- 1:08:47You know what the
- 1:08:48ocean can recover
- 1:08:49really quickly
- 1:08:49when it recovers
- 1:08:50really quickly is
- 1:08:51once we start
- 1:08:52telling people
- 1:08:52that you
- 1:08:53can't fish
- 1:08:53In certain areas
- 1:08:54certain areas are
- 1:08:55known to be
- 1:08:55productive and
- 1:08:56once those areas
- 1:08:57are productive
- 1:08:58and fish are
- 1:08:59allowed to come
- 1:08:59back and regulate
- 1:09:00The habitat then
- 1:09:02they start to
- 1:09:02have a spillover
- 1:09:03effect outside
- 1:09:04the boundaries of
- 1:09:05the marine
- 1:09:06protected area
- 1:09:06And then that
- 1:09:07could spill
- 1:09:07effect can go for
- 1:09:08kilometers
- 1:09:09depending on the
- 1:09:09species and its
- 1:09:10larval dispersal
- 1:09:11rates and
- 1:09:11everything
- 1:09:12like that
- 1:09:12And it has such a
- 1:09:13benefit. I want
- 1:09:14you to watch the
- 1:09:15movie. So I'm not
- 1:09:16gonna say the
- 1:09:16whole explanation
- 1:09:16I want you to
- 1:09:17watch the movie
- 1:09:17because the
- 1:09:18imagery and the
- 1:09:19videography
- 1:09:20is just
- 1:09:21Phenomenal, you
- 1:09:22know seeing the
- 1:09:23different colors
- 1:09:23of the shallows
- 1:09:25and different
- 1:09:25colors of the
- 1:09:26deep sea
- 1:09:27It's just
- 1:09:27amazing. So you
- 1:09:27have to watch it,
- 1:09:28but that was part
- 1:09:29of the message
- 1:09:29was this hope I
- 1:09:30was like,
- 1:09:30oh, okay
- 1:09:31So they're
- 1:09:31talking about a
- 1:09:31lot of depressing
- 1:09:32stuff. They
- 1:09:33didn't spend the
- 1:09:33whole movie on it
- 1:09:34But they talked a
- 1:09:34lot about the
- 1:09:35hope and MPAs
- 1:09:36then they started
- 1:09:36talking about the
- 1:09:37problem with some
- 1:09:37MPAs in the way
- 1:09:38they're managed
- 1:09:39Which is great.
- 1:09:39They could have
- 1:09:40gone into a
- 1:09:40little bit
- 1:09:40more detail
- 1:09:41But I know what
- 1:09:42they were trying
- 1:09:42to do and then
- 1:09:43they started to
- 1:09:43come back and
- 1:09:44they say hey, you
- 1:09:44know what?
- 1:09:45We've actually
- 1:09:45had some great
- 1:09:46things the
- 1:09:46Channel Islands
- 1:09:47off the coast of
- 1:09:48California
- 1:09:48in the USA
- 1:09:49The Channel
- 1:09:49Islands came back
- 1:09:50and they had a
- 1:09:51marine protected
- 1:09:52area and people
- 1:09:52said oh, you know
- 1:09:53after a while
- 1:09:54We started to see
- 1:09:54changes happening
- 1:09:55and then we
- 1:09:56started to get
- 1:09:56record numbers of
- 1:09:57catches in
- 1:09:58this case
- 1:09:58It was lobsters
- 1:09:59finally, so you
- 1:09:59started to see
- 1:10:00this and you're
- 1:10:00like, okay, so
- 1:10:01this is
- 1:10:01actually working
- 1:10:02We've seen this
- 1:10:03before in the
- 1:10:04literature
- 1:10:04We've seen marine
- 1:10:05protected areas
- 1:10:06that if done
- 1:10:06properly and
- 1:10:07managed properly
- 1:10:08and enforced
- 1:10:09properly
- 1:10:09You can see a
- 1:10:11change back to
- 1:10:12the system that
- 1:10:13was productive
- 1:10:14and a change in
- 1:10:15the habitat
- 1:10:15So that was
- 1:10:16really great the
- 1:10:17messaging overall
- 1:10:19was like we have
- 1:10:20hope the ocean
- 1:10:20can recover
- 1:10:21There are people
- 1:10:22that can do some
- 1:10:23really
- 1:10:23great things
- 1:10:24They talked also
- 1:10:25about Antarctica
- 1:10:26and some of the
- 1:10:27trawling that's
- 1:10:27happening
- 1:10:27Antarctica for
- 1:10:28krill and how the
- 1:10:29whales are
- 1:10:29using that
- 1:10:30Area at the
- 1:10:31Southern Ocean to
- 1:10:32get krill and now
- 1:10:33they're running
- 1:10:33out of food
- 1:10:34So what's gonna
- 1:10:34happen with the
- 1:10:35whales they even
- 1:10:36talked about the
- 1:10:37recovery near the
- 1:10:37end especially
- 1:10:38which I thought
- 1:10:38was really
- 1:10:39interesting
- 1:10:39They talked about
- 1:10:40how we've done
- 1:10:40this before
- 1:10:41We've taken
- 1:10:42animals to the
- 1:10:43brink of
- 1:10:43extinction ie
- 1:10:44whales when we
- 1:10:45used to hunt
- 1:10:45whales back in
- 1:10:47the 1800s
- 1:10:48Almost to
- 1:10:48extinction
- 1:10:49because we used
- 1:10:50to hunt whales
- 1:10:50for fuel. That's
- 1:10:52how we got fuel
- 1:10:52That's how we
- 1:10:53burnt all the
- 1:10:53lights and
- 1:10:54everything like
- 1:10:54that and how the
- 1:10:55lights stay on
- 1:10:56they would
- 1:10:56burn slower
- 1:10:57That was our
- 1:10:58energy and so we
- 1:10:59hunted whales to
- 1:11:00the brink until
- 1:11:01we said, you know
- 1:11:01What we
- 1:11:02discovered oil
- 1:11:02and gas oil and
- 1:11:04gas became the
- 1:11:04main
- 1:11:04producer of energy
- 1:11:05People want to
- 1:11:06stop hunting the
- 1:11:07whales eventually
- 1:11:07stopped there's
- 1:11:08certain countries
- 1:11:09that still do but
- 1:11:10for the most part
- 1:11:11We've seen a
- 1:11:11recovery of
- 1:11:12humpback whales
- 1:11:13of bowhead was of
- 1:11:14a lot of
- 1:11:15different whales
- 1:11:15out there blue
- 1:11:16whales
- 1:11:17that you know
- 1:11:18We're hunted to
- 1:11:18almost extinction
- 1:11:19and now we've
- 1:11:19seen like they're
- 1:11:20great
- 1:11:20conservation
- 1:11:21stories if we put
- 1:11:22together
- 1:11:23Conservation
- 1:11:23winds we can
- 1:11:24really do a
- 1:11:25good job now
- 1:11:27Here's what they
- 1:11:27talked about
- 1:11:28right at the end
- 1:11:29before
- 1:11:29the credits
- 1:11:29They basically
- 1:11:30wrote on text on
- 1:11:31the screen
- 1:11:32basically saying
- 1:11:32that the ocean
- 1:11:33decade conference
- 1:11:33coming up in Nice
- 1:11:34France where
- 1:11:35countries are
- 1:11:35gonna be
- 1:11:36Negotiating and
- 1:11:36trying to sign
- 1:11:37and talk about
- 1:11:38what the work
- 1:11:38that they've been
- 1:11:38doing to protect
- 1:11:3930% of the ocean
- 1:11:41by 2030 and 30%
- 1:11:42Of their control
- 1:11:43like exclusive
- 1:11:44economic zone,
- 1:11:45you know
- 1:11:45They'd call for
- 1:11:46those countries
- 1:11:46to do a better
- 1:11:47job to get more
- 1:11:48protection
- 1:11:49Faster because
- 1:11:50there's only
- 1:11:50globally there's
- 1:11:51less than 3% of
- 1:11:52the ocean
- 1:11:53protected
- 1:11:53But we're seeing
- 1:11:54a lot of
- 1:11:54productivity come
- 1:11:55from that 3% and
- 1:11:56we're also seeing
- 1:11:57others now
- 1:11:57There's a lot of
- 1:11:58issues
- 1:11:59surrounding MPAs
- 1:12:00and designated
- 1:12:01MPAs one
- 1:12:01I mean, it's not
- 1:12:02really an issue,
- 1:12:02but it takes a
- 1:12:03long time
- 1:12:04It takes a long
- 1:12:04time because it's
- 1:12:05conflict
- 1:12:05management
- 1:12:06You are telling
- 1:12:07people who used
- 1:12:07to be able to
- 1:12:08fish or do
- 1:12:08anything in a
- 1:12:09certain area that
- 1:12:10they're gonna be
- 1:12:10restricted
- 1:12:10from doing
- 1:12:11That activity in
- 1:12:12that area. It's
- 1:12:12not just fishing.
- 1:12:13It's any kind of
- 1:12:14extractive type.
- 1:12:15So it could be
- 1:12:16oil and gas
- 1:12:16It could be
- 1:12:17mining it could
- 1:12:18be development.
- 1:12:19It could be even
- 1:12:20recreational
- 1:12:21activities
- 1:12:21depending on how
- 1:12:22bad that area is
- 1:12:24So you have to do
- 1:12:25a lot of conflict
- 1:12:25management
- 1:12:26You have to do a
- 1:12:26lot of
- 1:12:27compromising a
- 1:12:27lot of
- 1:12:28negotiation to
- 1:12:28get an area
- 1:12:29protected
- 1:12:30And once you get
- 1:12:31that area
- 1:12:31protected which
- 1:12:32could take
- 1:12:32anywhere from a
- 1:12:33year to like 10
- 1:12:33years even longer
- 1:12:34to get protected
- 1:12:35Then you have to
- 1:12:36enforce and you
- 1:12:37have to manage
- 1:12:37and you have to
- 1:12:38go through
- 1:12:38adaptive
- 1:12:38management
- 1:12:39process to change
- 1:12:39the
- 1:12:40management with
- 1:12:40You know
- 1:12:41different types
- 1:12:41of changes that
- 1:12:42are going on in
- 1:12:43the world a lot
- 1:12:44of stuff
- 1:12:44going on there
- 1:12:45That was really
- 1:12:45interesting to
- 1:12:46see they didn't
- 1:12:47mention that in
- 1:12:48Antarctica
- 1:12:49There is the
- 1:12:49eastern part of
- 1:12:50the ocean in
- 1:12:51Antarctica the
- 1:12:51southern ocean
- 1:12:52that they
- 1:12:52want to protect
- 1:12:52they've been
- 1:12:53trying to get it
- 1:12:53protected for
- 1:12:54over 10 years and
- 1:12:55Antarctica is
- 1:12:56managed by 24 25
- 1:12:57countries
- 1:12:58including China
- 1:12:59and Russia who
- 1:12:59keep you know
- 1:13:00Blocking the vote
- 1:13:01to get this area
- 1:13:03protected. They
- 1:13:03did protect the
- 1:13:04Ross MPa or the
- 1:13:05Ross sea which
- 1:13:06was great
- 1:13:06But now they want
- 1:13:07to protect this
- 1:13:07other area to not
- 1:13:08only
- 1:13:08protect krill
- 1:13:09But other fish
- 1:13:10like what they
- 1:13:10call the Chilean
- 1:13:11sea bass, which
- 1:13:12is different fish
- 1:13:13I think it's
- 1:13:14called Patagonia
- 1:13:15and tooth fish
- 1:13:15and so people are
- 1:13:17trying to protect
- 1:13:17but it's hard to
- 1:13:18protect
- 1:13:18these areas
- 1:13:19So there's a lot
- 1:13:20of different
- 1:13:20issues and then
- 1:13:21we talked about
- 1:13:21the enforcement
- 1:13:22the UK allows
- 1:13:23bottom trolley
- 1:13:23and 90% of its
- 1:13:24marine
- 1:13:24protected areas
- 1:13:25That's got to
- 1:13:26change because
- 1:13:27you can't protect
- 1:13:27an area. You're
- 1:13:28not just
- 1:13:29protecting
- 1:13:29species
- 1:13:29You can't protect
- 1:13:30an area because
- 1:13:30that's where they
- 1:13:31live. That's
- 1:13:31where they eat.
- 1:13:32That's where they
- 1:13:32interact
- 1:13:33You have to
- 1:13:33protect that area
- 1:13:34You can't let
- 1:13:34bottom trolley a
- 1:13:35destructive
- 1:13:36fishing practice
- 1:13:37that will come
- 1:13:37through and
- 1:13:38destroy a
- 1:13:39particular part
- 1:13:39of the habitat
- 1:13:40If that continues
- 1:13:41to happen over
- 1:13:42and over and over
- 1:13:42again, you know
- 1:13:43Even it starts
- 1:13:44off as narrow
- 1:13:44bands that can
- 1:13:45increase and
- 1:13:46increase as
- 1:13:47bottom trolley
- 1:13:47continues
- 1:13:48to happen
- 1:13:48So there's got to
- 1:13:50be some
- 1:13:50restriction of
- 1:13:51extractive
- 1:13:51processes in
- 1:13:52marine
- 1:13:53protected areas
- 1:13:54In fact, it was
- 1:13:54argued that you
- 1:13:55don't really have
- 1:13:56a marine
- 1:13:56protected area if
- 1:13:57you allow
- 1:13:58extractive
- 1:13:58processes like
- 1:13:59fish bottom
- 1:14:00trolley in marine
- 1:14:01protected
- 1:14:01Areas, so there
- 1:14:02are a lot of
- 1:14:03things that
- 1:14:03happen that have
- 1:14:04to be stopped now
- 1:14:05Let's talk a
- 1:14:05little bit about
- 1:14:06trawling
- 1:14:07Trawling is a
- 1:14:08destructive
- 1:14:08practice like I
- 1:14:09talked about
- 1:14:10before it scrapes
- 1:14:11the bottom. There
- 1:14:11are different
- 1:14:12types of trawlers
- 1:14:12bottom trawling
- 1:14:13There's like mid
- 1:14:14water column
- 1:14:15trawling where
- 1:14:16basically the
- 1:14:16trawl goes
- 1:14:17through the
- 1:14:17water column
- 1:14:18It doesn't
- 1:14:18actually hit the
- 1:14:19bottom and it
- 1:14:19takes anything in
- 1:14:20the area
- 1:14:21I think the krill
- 1:14:22are going through
- 1:14:23like the mid
- 1:14:23column trawling,
- 1:14:25but it doesn't
- 1:14:25destroy
- 1:14:26the bottom
- 1:14:26But it does take
- 1:14:27a lot depending
- 1:14:28on how big the
- 1:14:28net it does and
- 1:14:29in the oceans
- 1:14:30It shows that
- 1:14:30they're pretty
- 1:14:31big nets and a
- 1:14:32lot of processing
- 1:14:32going on at sea
- 1:14:33before it gets
- 1:14:34taken to shore
- 1:14:35And so there's
- 1:14:36obviously
- 1:14:36problems with it,
- 1:14:37but does take a
- 1:14:38narrow band
- 1:14:39So if managed
- 1:14:40properly, maybe
- 1:14:41you can say hey,
- 1:14:42yeah, we can
- 1:14:43actually do this
- 1:14:44But you can't you
- 1:14:45know, there's
- 1:14:45certain times
- 1:14:45you're be able to
- 1:14:46trawl if you take
- 1:14:47a narrow band in
- 1:14:48a productive area
- 1:14:49And you don't
- 1:14:49fish beyond that
- 1:14:51that band will
- 1:14:52fill in with
- 1:14:53other organisms
- 1:14:54as succession
- 1:14:54happens
- 1:14:55in ecology
- 1:14:56But you know, you
- 1:14:57have to be
- 1:14:58careful and
- 1:14:58manage that
- 1:14:58It's very
- 1:14:59difficult to
- 1:14:59manage at sea
- 1:15:00when you're not
- 1:15:00there all the
- 1:15:01time and
- 1:15:01then you know
- 1:15:02People can just
- 1:15:03go they'll beg
- 1:15:04for forgiveness
- 1:15:04instead of asking
- 1:15:05for permission at
- 1:15:06sea and they'll
- 1:15:06just keep
- 1:15:07Trawling so you
- 1:15:07do have to be
- 1:15:08careful with
- 1:15:08that. There have
- 1:15:09been advancements
- 1:15:10in
- 1:15:10trawling in terms
- 1:15:12of net size in
- 1:15:13terms of
- 1:15:13exclusive devices
- 1:15:14such as sea
- 1:15:15turtle
- 1:15:15exclusion devices
- 1:15:17I think there are
- 1:15:17also for some
- 1:15:18like dolphins as
- 1:15:19well where it
- 1:15:19allows these
- 1:15:20animals to
- 1:15:21get out of
- 1:15:22the net and be
- 1:15:22able to survive
- 1:15:23there's mesh
- 1:15:24sizes which allow
- 1:15:25to be more
- 1:15:26selective in
- 1:15:27terms of the
- 1:15:27type of fish so
- 1:15:28they'll have
- 1:15:29larger mesh sizes
- 1:15:30for larger fish
- 1:15:31so the smaller
- 1:15:32fish can go
- 1:15:32through the mesh
- 1:15:33and they won't
- 1:15:33get caught trying
- 1:15:34to reduce bycatch
- 1:15:35but I did look up
- 1:15:36some statistics
- 1:15:37on it and so
- 1:15:38according to some
- 1:15:39sources bottom
- 1:15:41trawling accounts
- 1:15:41for approximately
- 1:15:4125% of the
- 1:15:42world's wild
- 1:15:43caught seafood
- 1:15:44and when you
- 1:15:44include mid-water
- 1:15:45trawling it
- 1:15:46contributes just
- 1:15:47over one-third
- 1:15:48So just over 30%
- 1:15:49of global fish
- 1:15:50catches in
- 1:15:51Canada. I want to
- 1:15:52get something
- 1:15:52specific
- 1:15:53in Canada
- 1:15:54It's about 6.5%
- 1:15:55of the national
- 1:15:56fish catch is
- 1:15:57obtained through
- 1:15:58trawling methods
- 1:15:59The bycatch
- 1:16:00concern is that
- 1:16:01the bycatch is
- 1:16:02estimated at 23%
- 1:16:04indicating a
- 1:16:04significant
- 1:16:05portion of
- 1:16:06non-target
- 1:16:07species caught
- 1:16:07and discarded
- 1:16:08In the US the
- 1:16:10trawl percentage
- 1:16:10accounts for
- 1:16:11approximately 4%
- 1:16:12of the catch from
- 1:16:13trawling
- 1:16:13activities
- 1:16:14And then the
- 1:16:15bycatch is nearly
- 1:16:1650% now UK
- 1:16:18As I mentioned
- 1:16:1990% of the MPAs
- 1:16:21have permitted to
- 1:16:22have bottom
- 1:16:22trawling
- 1:16:23But the trawling
- 1:16:24stands for
- 1:16:24approximately
- 1:16:253.7% of the fish
- 1:16:27catch the
- 1:16:27nation's
- 1:16:28fish catch
- 1:16:28So maybe it's not
- 1:16:30actually
- 1:16:30happening even
- 1:16:31though 90% of the
- 1:16:32MPAs allow
- 1:16:33it to happen
- 1:16:33It may not be
- 1:16:34happening
- 1:16:35everywhere other
- 1:16:36notable countries
- 1:16:37that have some
- 1:16:38significant
- 1:16:38trawling
- 1:16:39Approximately 65%
- 1:16:40of its seafood in
- 1:16:41the Netherlands
- 1:16:42is caught by
- 1:16:42bottom trawling
- 1:16:43in Morocco
- 1:16:44Also reports
- 1:16:45about 65% is
- 1:16:46caught from
- 1:16:47bottom trawling
- 1:16:47and then Vietnam
- 1:16:48bottom trawling
- 1:16:49accounts for 59%
- 1:16:50of its
- 1:16:51seafood catch
- 1:16:51So now obviously
- 1:16:52when you're
- 1:16:53looking at bottom
- 1:16:53trawling, you're
- 1:16:54worried about
- 1:16:54habitat
- 1:16:55destruction
- 1:16:56You're also
- 1:16:56worried about
- 1:16:56high
- 1:16:57bycatch rates
- 1:16:58So non-targeted
- 1:16:59species including
- 1:17:00endangered marine
- 1:17:01life are caught
- 1:17:02and discarded
- 1:17:02leading to
- 1:17:03ecological
- 1:17:04imbalances
- 1:17:05And then of
- 1:17:05course carbon
- 1:17:06emissions was
- 1:17:06mentioned in the
- 1:17:07ocean as you
- 1:17:08start to dredge
- 1:17:08out the bottom
- 1:17:09Sediments starts
- 1:17:10to get moved and
- 1:17:11carbon dioxide
- 1:17:12gets released
- 1:17:12into the
- 1:17:13atmosphere
- 1:17:13There's some
- 1:17:14recent studies
- 1:17:15that say that it
- 1:17:16may release
- 1:17:16substantial
- 1:17:16amounts of carbon
- 1:17:17dioxide by
- 1:17:18disturbing carbon
- 1:17:19rich sediments on
- 1:17:21the ocean floor
- 1:17:21So there's a lot
- 1:17:22going on with
- 1:17:23bottom trawling
- 1:17:24not the best
- 1:17:25fishing method
- 1:17:26Obviously,
- 1:17:26there's certain
- 1:17:27countries that
- 1:17:27depend a
- 1:17:28lot on it
- 1:17:28And there's other
- 1:17:28countries that
- 1:17:29don't depend a
- 1:17:30lot on it
- 1:17:30And of course the
- 1:17:31management of
- 1:17:31MPAs varies from
- 1:17:33country to
- 1:17:33country
- 1:17:33to country
- 1:17:34The UN came out
- 1:17:35with some
- 1:17:36stipulations in
- 1:17:37terms of what a
- 1:17:37marine protected
- 1:17:38area is and they
- 1:17:39kind of
- 1:17:40follow that
- 1:17:41And then we're
- 1:17:41also seeing more
- 1:17:42conservation
- 1:17:43coming in near
- 1:17:44shore as I talked
- 1:17:44about a couple of
- 1:17:45weeks ago with
- 1:17:46Angelo Villagomez
- 1:17:47and Alia Hadiat
- 1:17:48from the center
- 1:17:49of american
- 1:17:50progress talking
- 1:17:50about how near
- 1:17:51shore protection
- 1:17:52should start to
- 1:17:53ramp up and
- 1:17:53increase
- 1:17:54Because we're
- 1:17:54doing a lot on
- 1:17:55offshore
- 1:17:55But we're not
- 1:17:56doing as much on
- 1:17:57the inshore where
- 1:17:57it's just a
- 1:17:57harder
- 1:17:58place to do it
- 1:17:59The coastal area
- 1:17:59is the harder
- 1:18:00place where we
- 1:18:01are going to be
- 1:18:03having problems
- 1:18:03in conflict
- 1:18:04resolution
- 1:18:04That has to take
- 1:18:05place before we
- 1:18:06can start to
- 1:18:07protect those one
- 1:18:08of the things
- 1:18:08they talked about
- 1:18:09papahana
- 1:18:09makua kaya
- 1:18:10The marine
- 1:18:11sanctuary off the
- 1:18:12islands of hawaii
- 1:18:13or just northern
- 1:18:14islands of hawaii
- 1:18:15Which is a huge
- 1:18:16place that has a
- 1:18:17great
- 1:18:17spillover effect
- 1:18:19Obviously that
- 1:18:19was the subject
- 1:18:20matter of some
- 1:18:21controversy a
- 1:18:22couple months ago
- 1:18:23when donald trump
- 1:18:24opened it
- 1:18:24up to fishing
- 1:18:25So that's going
- 1:18:25to be a problem
- 1:18:26But there's a big
- 1:18:27focus on this in
- 1:18:29the movie
- 1:18:29They talk a lot
- 1:18:30about how the
- 1:18:31size of it's
- 1:18:31great and
- 1:18:32everything is
- 1:18:32doing well
- 1:18:33And it's
- 1:18:33increased catch
- 1:18:34rates by 54
- 1:18:35outside the
- 1:18:36marine protected
- 1:18:36area, which is
- 1:18:37all wonderful
- 1:18:38The one thing
- 1:18:39though that we
- 1:18:39should mention is
- 1:18:40that in areas
- 1:18:41where it's
- 1:18:41overseas
- 1:18:42territories such
- 1:18:42as the
- 1:18:43hawaii islands
- 1:18:44I guess not
- 1:18:45really territory
- 1:18:45It's a state but
- 1:18:46still like in
- 1:18:47those areas where
- 1:18:47it's
- 1:18:47indigenous led
- 1:18:48It's great to
- 1:18:49have that
- 1:18:49protection
- 1:18:50because
- 1:18:50especially with
- 1:18:51indigenous led
- 1:18:51marine protected
- 1:18:52areas is usually
- 1:18:53pretty good
- 1:18:53because it's part
- 1:18:54of their culture
- 1:18:55However, a lot of
- 1:18:56the bigger marine
- 1:18:57protected areas
- 1:18:58are in areas
- 1:18:59where there's a
- 1:19:00big indigenous
- 1:19:00population
- 1:19:01There's less in
- 1:19:02the main
- 1:19:03population the
- 1:19:04non-indigenous
- 1:19:05population
- 1:19:06because it's
- 1:19:06harder to do
- 1:19:07And it becomes
- 1:19:08more conflicting
- 1:19:09and we try to do
- 1:19:10one of the sea
- 1:19:10mountain canyons
- 1:19:11in the us
- 1:19:12Just off the
- 1:19:12coast of
- 1:19:13massachusetts. I
- 1:19:14don't know if it
- 1:19:14ever got brought
- 1:19:15back, but now
- 1:19:15that donald trump
- 1:19:16is in power
- 1:19:17I'm sure it was
- 1:19:17an executive
- 1:19:18order when it
- 1:19:19first came in
- 1:19:19under the obama
- 1:19:20administration.
- 1:19:20Donald trump
- 1:19:21took it away
- 1:19:21I think biden
- 1:19:22took it back. I'm
- 1:19:23sure it's got
- 1:19:24back stripped
- 1:19:24down again
- 1:19:25So these are big
- 1:19:26problems that
- 1:19:27happen not only
- 1:19:27in the us but all
- 1:19:28over the world
- 1:19:29Mpa's are not
- 1:19:30easy to designate
- 1:19:31which you know,
- 1:19:31the movie made it
- 1:19:32sound like it
- 1:19:33could be
- 1:19:33It's not an easy
- 1:19:34thing. It works
- 1:19:35when it's done
- 1:19:36properly and it's
- 1:19:36enforced and it's
- 1:19:37managed properly
- 1:19:38But when it's not
- 1:19:39or it takes a
- 1:19:39long time to get
- 1:19:40it approved, you
- 1:19:41know destruction
- 1:19:41continues
- 1:19:42to happen
- 1:19:42And there's
- 1:19:43always you know
- 1:19:44countries who are
- 1:19:44wanting to
- 1:19:45get on top
- 1:19:46The papahana
- 1:19:47makua kia got
- 1:19:48opened up because
- 1:19:49you know, the us
- 1:19:50want to be number
- 1:19:50one in the
- 1:19:51pacific
- 1:19:51for fishing
- 1:19:52Pretty much that
- 1:19:53was the reason so
- 1:19:53that's a big
- 1:19:54problem when you
- 1:19:55talk about mpa's
- 1:19:56and trying to
- 1:19:56keep mpa's intact
- 1:19:57and protected
- 1:19:58So lots of stuff
- 1:19:59going on great
- 1:20:00message of hope
- 1:20:01the fact is hey
- 1:20:01You know what?
- 1:20:02There's our ways
- 1:20:03to do it. We just
- 1:20:03have to do it
- 1:20:04We just have to
- 1:20:05actually go out
- 1:20:05and execute and
- 1:20:06put in more
- 1:20:06marine protected
- 1:20:07areas get up to
- 1:20:08that 30 percent
- 1:20:08Or as close as
- 1:20:09possible by 2030
- 1:20:10and just continue
- 1:20:11to work at it and
- 1:20:12work at it and
- 1:20:13work at it
- 1:20:14So I hope you
- 1:20:15have a chance to
- 1:20:15go see it. I
- 1:20:16don't know what's
- 1:20:16going to happen
- 1:20:17This was a
- 1:20:17release it came
- 1:20:18out a little
- 1:20:18later in canada
- 1:20:19than it did in
- 1:20:20the uk when it
- 1:20:20was first
- 1:20:21released at the
- 1:20:21Beginning of the
- 1:20:22month in may but
- 1:20:23I highly
- 1:20:23recommend you go
- 1:20:24get I hope they
- 1:20:25put it out
- 1:20:25on netflix
- 1:20:26Or on some
- 1:20:27streaming channel
- 1:20:27that everybody
- 1:20:27can get access to
- 1:20:28because I think
- 1:20:29it'll make a lot
- 1:20:29more waves
- 1:20:30No pun intended,
- 1:20:31but I hope you
- 1:20:32get to see if
- 1:20:33you've seen it
- 1:20:33and you want to
- 1:20:34let me know what
- 1:20:35you
- 1:20:35thought about it
