- 1:52Speaker 1: Good friend Aaron for the topic suggestion, because man, we
- 1:57Speaker 1: are all feeling it right now.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Every day I wake up in my five hundred and.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Fifty square foot New York City apartment much later than
- 2:07Speaker 1: I used to, and I walk to the bathroom and
- 2:10Speaker 1: I look in the mirror and I just think another day.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But here's the thing. We got a lot of life
- 2:16Speaker 2: to live.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We got a lot of living to do, and so
- 2:19Speaker 1: we owe it to ourselves to try to not only
- 2:22Speaker 1: get by and survive, but also to thrive as best
- 2:27Speaker 1: as possible. And so for today's episode, I am talking
- 2:30Speaker 1: you through the strategies that I'm using to feel more
- 2:33Speaker 1: motivated day in and day out. As a side note,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I feel like there are a lot of good promotions
- 2:40Speaker 1: that I have available to you guys from the Hurdle

- 3:00Speaker 1: As you know, a lot of time and effort goes
- 3:03Speaker 1: into creating this content for you, from the recording and

- 3:10Speaker 1: great sponsors are what makes that time commitment possible from
- 3:15Speaker 1: my end, so please support them, and by doing that,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you are supporting me. I've always loved connecting with you guys,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but right now it just feels so special. Reach out

- 3:28Speaker 1: can find me at Hurdle Podcast or at Emily a Body.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And last but not least, I am regularly posting writing
- 3:37Speaker 1: prompts on the Hurdle feed. It's something that a lot
- 3:40Speaker 1: of you are asking for and I'd love your feedback
- 3:44Speaker 1: on what's happening over there. So again at Hurdle Podcast,
- 3:47Speaker 1: make sure to comment like DM whatever works for you
- 3:51Speaker 1: to let me know what's working what's not working, what
- 3:55Speaker 1: you want to see more of. I am all ears
- 3:59Speaker 1: and with that, let's get to hurdling. I sat down
- 4:14Speaker 1: to record hurdle moment at least three different times within
- 4:18Speaker 1: the last twenty four hours. I was ready to go,
- 4:22Speaker 1: and either something happened, or I got sidetracked, or I
- 4:25Speaker 1: just felt unmotivated. It's a feeling that I think so
- 4:30Speaker 1: many of us can share right now, so many of
- 4:33Speaker 1: us can relate to just this idea of every single
- 4:38Speaker 1: day being the same. You wake up and you haphazardly
- 4:43Speaker 1: walk to the bathroom and you look in the mirror
- 4:45Speaker 1: and you wonder if today is the day you're actually
- 4:47Speaker 1: going to get dressed or simply just change into new sweatpants.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And then you walk into the kitchen and you wonder
- 4:53Speaker 1: if you should mix up your breakfast routine. You ask
- 4:56Speaker 1: yourself if you should work out now or later or both,
- 4:59Speaker 1: or at night, you wonder about what's going to be
- 5:01Speaker 1: for lunch before you've even had your coffee. You try
- 5:04Speaker 1: to tackle a to do list for work and only
- 5:07Speaker 1: get three out of the twenty two items on it done.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I mean, hey, I get it. I'm there too. The
- 5:15Speaker 1: good news is that there are ways to find motivation
- 5:19Speaker 1: in our day today. There are ways to take advantage
- 5:23Speaker 1: of this to the best of our ability, with an
- 5:26Speaker 1: understanding that our ability right now is not what it was.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Before all of this started. So let's get to it.
- 5:35Speaker 1: We're talking through ways to find motivation in the day today.
- 5:40Speaker 1: First up, keep a gratitude journal. By being appreciative of
- 5:44Speaker 1: what it is that you do have, it helps you
- 5:47Speaker 1: find you're happy, and so it's important to find the
- 5:51Speaker 1: joy in every day now. Gratitude journaling has looked different
- 5:56Speaker 1: for me throughout the years. For one full year, I
- 6:00Speaker 1: kept a gratitude journal that had me writing down three
- 6:03Speaker 1: things that made me happy every single morning. When that
- 6:07Speaker 1: got to a place where it felt a little bit daunting,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I switched to a one line a day journal that
- 6:12Speaker 1: lasted for quite some time. And now I've committed myself
- 6:17Speaker 1: to filling out at least one full page in my
- 6:19Speaker 1: journal every single day and finishing off that page at
- 6:24Speaker 1: minimum with a daily smile or something that has brought
- 6:28Speaker 1: me fulfillment and happiness over the past twenty four hours.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I've said it before and I'll say it again. These smiles,
- 6:35Speaker 1: these winds, they don't have to be big things. Yesterday morning,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I was having myself a day and I realized that
- 6:43Speaker 1: I was just enjoying little thing after a little thing.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I went on a bike ride, and I noticed that
- 6:48Speaker 1: the birds were chirping. It was a beautiful day outside,
- 6:52Speaker 1: warmer than I expected. I was riding my new, beautiful bike,
- 6:57Speaker 1: moving my body. I came home and showered and actually
- 7:01Speaker 1: did my hair for the first time, and God knows
- 7:04Speaker 1: how long I sat on my beautiful fire escape the
- 7:08Speaker 1: small luxuries and soaked in the sun and journaled and
- 7:13Speaker 1: drank good coffee, and man, it was just great. None
- 7:18Speaker 1: of those things are winning the lottery or getting to
- 7:22Speaker 1: hug another human. Isn't it funny that that's what's on
- 7:25Speaker 1: my big winds highlight right now, or even.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Landing some big job.
- 7:29Speaker 1: No, all of the things that made me so grateful
- 7:33Speaker 1: yesterday were small moments that contributed to a great feeling.
- 7:38Speaker 1: When you take the time again to appreciate the good
- 7:41Speaker 1: things to write in a gratitude journal, in my experience,
- 7:44Speaker 1: that keeps you motivated. It helps you stay positive to
- 7:47Speaker 1: handle the other things throughout your day. Next strategy, have
- 7:51Speaker 1: things to look forward to throughout the day. So here's
- 7:55Speaker 1: the deal. If you sit down on your couch or
- 7:57Speaker 1: at your desk and you just say, okay, it's time
- 8:00Speaker 1: for the workday to begin, nothing really is probably going
- 8:04Speaker 1: to happen how you want it to go down. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: that's because we're anxious. We're not as productive as we
- 8:10Speaker 1: usually are. Our head is in a thousand places, we're restless,
- 8:14Speaker 1: and so to make the day go smoother, write down
- 8:18Speaker 1: things that you are looking forward to. So one of
- 8:21Speaker 1: the biggest strategies that I have been using to stay
- 8:24Speaker 1: motivated is breaking up the workday into work chunks and
- 8:28Speaker 1: non work chunks. Perhaps I will aim to write two
- 8:33Speaker 1: articles throughout the day. I know that I will not
- 8:36Speaker 1: have the attention span to write them back to back.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So perhaps I'm writing an article at ten, I'm allowing
- 8:43Speaker 1: myself to not look at any technology, eat lunch, and
- 8:46Speaker 1: maybe do some sort of a workout from twelve to two,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and then I'm back for another article at three. That way,
- 8:52Speaker 1: as I'm getting things done at ten am, I have
- 8:55Speaker 1: that break to look forward to at noon, that incentive,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that motivation to keep pushing. Maybe it's a workout, maybe
- 9:04Speaker 1: it's a catch up phone call with a friend. By
- 9:06Speaker 1: having these things on the schedule. It makes me feel
- 9:10Speaker 1: some sort of normalcy, and man, it feels so good.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Next tip, move your body, whether or not you are
- 9:20Speaker 1: running outside. And if you are doing that, I have
- 9:23Speaker 1: a couple of different episodes for you to lean into
- 9:25Speaker 1: and I'll put those in the show notes right now
- 9:28Speaker 1: for best practices, it is important to move your body.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Moving your body helps increase serotonin. It makes you feel good.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And one of the things that I have been doing
- 9:41Speaker 1: when I am struggling in my apartment is getting up,
- 9:45Speaker 1: taking a break and doing any sort of movement for
- 9:48Speaker 1: ten minutes. Just the other day, I felt like I
- 9:51Speaker 1: was in the middle of an afternoon slump, and I
- 9:54Speaker 1: did a fifteen minute workout with a friend on FaceTime,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and then I was ready to get back into the
- 9:59Speaker 1: swing things. The good thing about quick hitting workouts is
- 10:03Speaker 1: oftentimes you're not drenched in sweat, which means that you
- 10:06Speaker 1: can get back into the swing of things. And also,
- 10:09Speaker 1: even if you are, now is not the time that
- 10:12Speaker 1: anyone is going to judge you, if anyone's even around. Also,
- 10:16Speaker 1: by doing a quick workout, you're accomplishing something which makes
- 10:20Speaker 1: you feel like you are capable, which you are, but
- 10:24Speaker 1: some days it's easy to feel frustrated with that. My
- 10:27Speaker 1: next tip for staying motivated is talk about it with someone. Sure,
- 10:33Speaker 1: you're listening to me air out my frustrations right now,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but it is so important for you to share the
- 10:39Speaker 1: experiences of what you're going through with a friend, with
- 10:43Speaker 1: a family member, set aside a specific time, something that
- 10:47Speaker 1: you can look forward to to have this conversation. Of course,
- 10:51Speaker 1: writing things down again is super, super valuable, but it
- 10:55Speaker 1: feels so so good to just be open and honest
- 10:59Speaker 1: with someone that you care about, someone that can tell you, hey,
- 11:03Speaker 1: I'm feeling the same way, it's okay. I think a
- 11:06Speaker 1: lot of the times we get in our own heads
- 11:08Speaker 1: and we're made to feel like whatever it is that
- 11:10Speaker 1: we're doing, it's not good enough. I said on Instagram
- 11:14Speaker 1: today that when I make my daily schedule, for example,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's kind of just like a goal. In the old
- 11:21Speaker 1: days of Emily being really really productive and sitting in
- 11:25Speaker 1: her rework and feeling like she was superwoman, I would
- 11:28Speaker 1: make a timestamp schedule and actually somehow miraculously get everything
- 11:33Speaker 1: done for the most part on the schedule. Well, that's
- 11:37Speaker 1: not happening these days. These days, I make a timestamp schedule,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and for instance, I wanted to record this about eight
- 11:44Speaker 1: hours ago, and well here I am now, and that's okay.
- 11:48Speaker 1: The reason I'm telling you the story is because someone
- 11:50Speaker 1: DM me and they said, I just thought that there
- 11:52Speaker 1: were super productive people that were able to do absolutely
- 11:55Speaker 1: everything just by everything going on right now.
- 11:57Speaker 2: And I said, do not be fooled. Do not be fooled.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And my last tip to stay motivated right now is
- 12:05Speaker 1: to find things that excite you. Now is the time
- 12:09Speaker 1: that we are broken from what was our normal routine
- 12:13Speaker 1: and we might be realizing the things in our lives
- 12:16Speaker 1: that we have been doing that aren't fulfilling us. So
- 12:20Speaker 1: ask yourself what is it that you want to be
- 12:23Speaker 1: doing more of? Just because life is different right now
- 12:28Speaker 1: doesn't mean that you can't find a way to get
- 12:32Speaker 1: more out of your day today. If you're not happy
- 12:36Speaker 1: with what you're doing from your nine to five, or
- 12:38Speaker 1: perhaps like so many people I know right now, your
- 12:43Speaker 1: job situation is shifting and you're looking for a new outlet.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Now is a time to ask yourself the hard questions.
- 12:50Speaker 1: What is it that you like to do? What is
- 12:51Speaker 1: it that you want to do with your time? How
- 12:54Speaker 1: can you incorporate the things that bring you happiness and
- 12:57Speaker 1: enjoy regularly into your routine. We have one life, and
- 13:03Speaker 1: I know that things might not be how you wish
- 13:06Speaker 1: that they were right now, but that doesn't mean that
- 13:08Speaker 1: sitting around and sulking about it is going to do
- 13:11Speaker 1: us any good. It's important to recognize how you feel
- 13:15Speaker 1: go through that, but we owe it to ourselves to
- 13:18Speaker 1: pick ourselves back up and to move forward. Find the
- 13:23Speaker 1: things that you enjoy and incorporate those into your every day.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Just because things might not be easy doesn't mean you
- 13:33Speaker 1: can't handle them. Every day is an opportunity to show
- 13:36Speaker 1: up for yourself, so don't be hard if today or
- 13:39Speaker 1: tomorrow doesn't go as you'd hoped. Thanks for encouraging me
- 13:43Speaker 1: to keep showing up. This podcast is a huge outlet
- 13:47Speaker 1: for me, and now more than ever, I'll be honest
- 13:50Speaker 1: with you as listening habits are changing and things feel
- 13:53Speaker 1: really uncertain. I really really need your support. So if
- 13:58Speaker 1: you like what you're hearing, whether it's in this episode
- 14:01Speaker 1: or Gabby Bernstein's episode from earlier this week, or past episodes,
- 14:05Speaker 1: please share the podcast on social media, share it with
- 14:09Speaker 1: a friend, rate it, and review it in the iTunes store.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Keep showing up for me, and like I said, I
- 14:16Speaker 1: am happy to show up for you at Emily a
- 14:20Speaker 1: Body at Hurdle podcast and if you need anything over email,
- 14:24Speaker 1: it's Emily at hurdle dot us. Another hurdle conquered. Catch
