- 0:00As part of Ferrari Fridays, William Ross from the Exotic Car Marketplace
- 0:04will be discussing all things Ferrari and interviewing people that live
- 0:07and breathe The Ferrari brand.
- 0:09Topics range from road cars to racing drivers to owners, as well
- 0:13as auctions, private sales and trends in the collector market.
- 0:19Never, never.
- 0:28Welcome to the Ferrari Marketplace Podcast.
- 0:31Today we're gonna take a deep dive into the legend itself, the Ferrari
- 0:34two 50 GTO with only 36 ever built.
- 0:37The GTO sits the top of the collector car market with its
- 0:41racing pedigree, unmatched beauty.
- 0:43Its history with some of the motorsports most prolific drivers.
- 0:46It is the ultimate expression of Ferrari's 1960s.
- 0:49Racing dominance.
- 0:50But today we're not just gonna talk about any GTO.
- 0:53We're specifically gonna talk about chassis 3 7 2 9 gt.
- 0:57This is the only two 50 GTO that left the factory in Bianco's, Speciale, or for us
- 1:02that don't speak Italian, that's white.
- 1:04We believe it might have been at the request of John Coons being that he
- 1:06was British and didn't wanna have a red car, but one of my guests might
- 1:09be able to delve into that a smidge.
- 1:12And for now though, but the first time in, geez, multiple decades,
- 1:16this GTO is coming to auction.
- 1:18Specifically, it's gonna be coming to Mecca's Kissame Auction
- 1:21in January, the world's largest collector car auction event today.
- 1:25Joining me also on this is gonna be Sam Murtaugh, COO of Meum
- 1:29Auctions, and Chris Neely from the Prancing Horse of Nashville.
- 1:32So gentlemen, welcome to the show.
- 1:34Thank you.
- 1:34Thank you.
- 1:35So let's just jump right into the car itself.
- 1:38This specific GTO, there's some really great specifics about this
- 1:42car that make, in my opinion, one of the more collectible ones of the 36.
- 1:47You know, I mean obviously all of 'em are collectible, but you know, there's
- 1:49some really good specifics about this car itself that I think makes it kind
- 1:52of stand out from the other ones.
- 1:54It's just one of eight right hand drive cars.
- 1:56My opinion outta 36 1 8, that kind of makes it a little bit more special.
- 2:00Chris, what are your thoughts on that?
- 2:01Being one of only eight right hand drive cars.
- 2:03Obviously it was sold to a UK owner, so the cars are right hand drive.
- 2:07It's the car that he preferred to have.
- 2:09I mean, they're just used to it.
- 2:10For us in the states, it's a little odd for us, but I mean, right hand drive cars
- 2:14are super desirable in certain markets.
- 2:17One right hand drive cars, which obviously shrinks the rarity from 36 down to
- 2:21eight, but the fact that this is painted white, it is the only one painted white
- 2:24from the factory, basically being the only one, regardless of the right hand
- 2:28drive, the only one painted white of the whole group is the most powerful
- 2:31piece of this car from my perspective.
- 2:33I mean, whether it's right or left hand drive, whatever you like, but
- 2:36the fact that it's the only one in white, that is the spectacular fact
- 2:39to me, from a rarity standpoint.
- 2:41I agree.
- 2:42I think it looks spectacular and white myself, that's for sure.
- 2:44Yep.
- 2:45Makes it stand out.
- 2:46And especially the fact that, you know, you had a lot of 'em that have been
- 2:47repainted different colors and that, but this day and age, it's always good to
- 2:50have it go back to its factory color, being that one of one, you'll know which
- 2:54special car you have out of all of them.
- 2:56No, no question.
- 2:57I mean, if you wanna stand out in a lead crowd of which, of being an owner of
- 2:59A GTO, what you at the, you know, the highest of the pedestal, but to have the
- 3:02only one in white and to stand out in white, I mean it, to see, it, it just, the
- 3:07white color in that car and the lines in that car, it's, it's, it's spectacular.
- 3:10Most definitely, definitely.
- 3:12Now.
- 3:13Do we know specifically why that left a factory in white?
- 3:17Was it at the request of cos?
- 3:18I believe so, yes.
- 3:20At least wasn't green, but white looks very nice on it.
- 3:23Another great thing, or I guess, special, unique thing about this
- 3:26car itself is everyone that is familiar with the nose, GTOs.
- 3:31They all think they have blue interior.
- 3:33That car actually came with the, from the factory in with the black interior?
- 3:37No, it came with a blue interior, but when it immediately was delivered in
- 3:41period with the number 10 on it, it was the car that was run by Graham Hill.
- 3:45From the best of my knowledge, I believe that the car had the black seats, and that
- 3:48was only weeks after the car was deliver.
- 3:51So I think that's what they changed up on it when the car got delivered to the uk.
- 3:55Wondering why they would do that so quickly, switching from the blue.
- 3:58Well, did all the, uh, GTOs come blue and black or was there
- 4:01another color else came in?
- 4:02No, there was a few different colors.
- 4:03There was some that were delivered with red.
- 4:05There was some that were delivered with green.
- 4:07There was even black interiors.
- 4:09It was just something at the time they used almost like a Nomex type material.
- 4:13So the driver wanted to slide around in his, in his overalls, in his racing suit.
- 4:17It was almost like a vinyl on the sides that was used on the side bolsters.
- 4:21But the seats are very, very, very small seat that's in that car.
- 4:24It's super easy to retrim and put, you know, whatever color you want
- 4:28it, but I'm assuming that Coombs, that was his look, his livery that
- 4:32he had was white with black 'cause it was obviously requested that way.
- 4:36But anyone out there listening knows why they did it so quickly.
- 4:39Shoot me a message 'cause we'd like to know if we get an
- 4:41answer that that'd be fantastic.
- 4:42But, uh, that's good to know.
- 4:43'cause I always, I think of blue when I think of GTO on the interior,
- 4:47something that would stand out.
- 4:47But black, white, interior, fantastic.
- 4:50Coombs actually being a Jaguar guy sent the car over to Jaguar for them
- 4:55to guess reverse engineer it, to try and get their Jaguar up to speed.
- 4:59'cause the GTO was so fast.
- 5:01What do we know about that little story?
- 5:03'cause it's never been confirmed, but it's kind of pretty well known.
- 5:06Coombs, you know, was.
- 5:07As Chris mentioned, he was British and you know, obviously was, was heavy into
- 5:11the associate with Jaguar and, and it said that Jaguar engineers wanted to get their
- 5:15hands on that to figure out what's going on, why, what's making this car so great.
- 5:19And to be able to have an opportunity with the relationship with Coombs and,
- 5:22and get their hands on, on a GTO to, you know, looking into that car and, and.
- 5:26Figuring out what they could use from that to prototype their lightweight e types.
- 5:30Coombs did a few special things to kind of, I wanna say differentiate.
- 5:34I don't know if make it better.
- 5:35What did Coombs do to the car itself?
- 5:37Do I guess, in his mind, improve it?
- 5:39Coombs, I believe, put the increased cooling in it, so the third vent.
- 5:42Most of the cars have the two vents on 'em.
- 5:43This car has three vents on the right hand side and he made some other small
- 5:46modifications to the car 'cause he was obviously competing with the car and
- 5:50they were showing the car and running it everywhere they could in the uk.
- 5:53The louvers on the hood I believe was something cos added and I think
- 5:56air ducts in the front, I think he replaced those fog lights and made
- 5:59those functional air, I believe.
- 6:01I'm not mistaken, he did make some small ones.
- 6:03There's a photo of the car with Graham Hill running the car and
- 6:06it's got the three vents on it.
- 6:08So you know, it was definitely a three vent car originally because there's
- 6:12other photos when you look at it.
- 6:13The green one that I mentioned to you, that it was actually a
- 6:16little bit earlier car, and there's cars that were later than it that
- 6:19actually had the two vents as well.
- 6:21So there had to be a point with ti when they went ahead and they
- 6:24built the body on these cars.
- 6:25It had to be a request, but it wasn't something that Coombs, you gotta be clear
- 6:30about that, that it was added afterwards.
- 6:32There's a few of them that have the three vents on the side.
- 6:35There are a few cars that have the three vents because you can
- 6:38clearly see it in the photo.
- 6:41They had those three vent holes in the front, but.
- 6:44There's other ones that were in the bonnet and you know, cars had,
- 6:47you know, different things in them.
- 6:49This car, uh, it hasn't been modified.
- 6:51This is the way that this car was ordered.
- 6:53The vents on the hood on the front or in the nose.
- 6:55Can you open and close those?
- 6:57Yes.
- 6:58In motion?
- 6:58No, not in motion.
- 6:59No.
- 7:00You just go ahead and they have.
- 7:01Quick fasteners on 'em and you just put 'em in.
- 7:04So they obviously did it for cooling because if they don't want the car to
- 7:07run too hot or obviously too cool at Lamont specifically, or, and a lot of
- 7:11the other tracks back then, they had a lot of very long straits and obviously
- 7:13aerodynamics come into play, wasn't it?
- 7:16Early cars, they came to the conclusion or realized that it was having a
- 7:19lot of nose lift at higher speeds.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:22That's when the early days of aerodynamics were really starting to kick in and
- 7:25they started to figure out, we gotta go ahead and keep this car cool or hot.
- 7:29But you know, the more openings that you have on a car, the more it slows
- 7:32it down because that's just that much more error that's not slipping
- 7:35over the car, it's going into it.
- 7:37It's kind of the balancing act at that point.
- 7:39If you look at the grill on a two 50 GTO, it's quite small.
- 7:42Yeah.
- 7:42And as a sidebar, when you look at the car, like the 2 75 car, the hen
- 7:46car, the the sister car to Dana's car.
- 7:48During the race, they had to get wire snipers in 65 and cut a giant
- 7:52hole in the front of the car just to get more air into the car.
- 7:55And that's really the successor to the two 50 GTL.
- 7:59Always keep in mind that, you know, yes, you could drive 'em on the
- 8:01street, but these were race cars.
- 8:03That's what they were built for back in the day.
- 8:04It was to compete.
- 8:06People would sit there and look how minimalist the
- 8:08interior is and what it's got.
- 8:09It doesn't have any creature comforts.
- 8:11This thing had one purpose and that was to go fast and win races,
- 8:14extra cooling, everything would be critical back then too, especially.
- 8:18Front engine V 12 is gonna need to breathe as much as it possibly can.
- 8:21Sure.
- 8:22This car's really, it's never been, I wanna say wrecked, but I mean it
- 8:27might've had a ding or two or here or there, but it's never had anything
- 8:30of serious consequence where quarter panels, all this stuff had to get
- 8:34replaced or anything like that.
- 8:35Pretty solid as an original car.
- 8:37Right?
- 8:37Well, Mike Parks had an accident with it in 63, which is well documented.
- 8:41You know, it had its battle scars and, and the way that it worked, if you
- 8:44were racing for Ferrari, if you weren't pushing the car right to the very edge.
- 8:48You were no longer gonna be a racing driver for Enzo Ferrari.
- 8:52It was first or nothing with them.
- 8:54You know, it didn't, it wasn't, you know, second or third place,
- 8:57they weren't satisfied with that.
- 8:59It was win at all costs and the drivers put the cars to their limits
- 9:02and they pushed 'em right to the edge.
- 9:04And sometimes they went a little bit over the edge.
- 9:06But to your point where you mentioned earlier, was it completely in an
- 9:09accident, some of the other GTOs have had some catastrophic crashes.
- 9:13No, this car didn't it, it was raced in period.
- 9:15It had its battle scars.
- 9:17As they say, structurally, the cars is sound.
- 9:20And it's, you know, the, the way that the car always was.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:23That's fantastic.
- 9:24Some of these have been, I would say, damage bound recognition, but you know,
- 9:28they have some significant damage and having something that's that original
- 9:30close original is fantastic as well.
- 9:32For sure.
- 9:33Let's get into specifically 3 7 2 9 GT Ferrari, two 50 GTO
- 9:38in the, uh, build sequence.
- 9:40When was this one built?
- 9:41Number 12.
- 9:42Okay.
- 9:42So they had some, I guess you would say testing or I'd say racing done
- 9:46prior to that one being built.
- 9:47So they probably modified that after knowing that that needed more cooling.
- 9:50Yeah, and it, and it's funny, on the most part, the cars were all the same.
- 9:54One of them has a different differential.
- 9:56Two of them actually have a different differential in them, and then
- 9:59there's some that, you know, have a stripe on 'em, which is noted
- 10:02obviously originally how it left.
- 10:04But this was the third one for the uk.
- 10:07So I believe it's the third right hand drive car, at least what I'm seeing here.
- 10:11It's number 12.
- 10:13Most of 'em are Rosana, but some of them are.
- 10:15Rosa Corsa is what it shows here, which I don't know if that's a
- 10:19screw up in the computer or not.
- 10:20I didn't know that that was actually a color at any point
- 10:23until way, way later racing red.
- 10:25Oh no, it actually, no, no, no.
- 10:26It is though.
- 10:27I see another car with it as well.
- 10:28I see three cars with it.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:30It's quite unique.
- 10:32This car.
- 10:32But it's definitely, when I look at this car, 3 7 2 9, it's
- 10:37the 12th one that was produced.
- 10:39You know, one thing that I think is very special too, and what's great
- 10:41about this car is the long-term ownership history that this car's had.
- 10:45Chris, can you touch on that a little bit?
- 10:47Regarding to basically just only a really a couple owners, Jack Sears had
- 10:51the car from 1970 all the way to 19.
- 10:5499. I mean, he had a, a long ownership with the car.
- 10:57That's when John Shirley purchased the vehicle.
- 10:5930 years is impressive for keeping a car of that nature's.
- 11:03What did he buy that car for?
- 11:04I, it wasn't all that much back in, what was it, 71, he bought it.
- 11:08Oh yeah.
- 11:08So in 1971, that car probably at the absolute most, would've
- 11:13been probably 10 to $15,000.
- 11:16I know that the Nick Mason car was sold.
- 11:18For about 35 to $40,000 from Ronald Stern to Nick Mason in 1978 or 79,
- 11:26I'd say in the early seventies, it was probably somewhere around 15, maybe
- 11:3020,000, somewhere in the neighborhood.
- 11:32So it's, it's quite the investment when you really look at it.
- 11:35Yeah, a little bit.
- 11:36Yeah, that's a nice return.
- 11:37You know, and I, A little side story, Nick Mason utilized his car's collateral
- 11:42to fund, it was the mid eighties Pink Floyd reunion tour, whatever.
- 11:46They put that up as collateral, I dunno, it was like a million
- 11:48bucks or something like that to be able to pay for their tour.
- 11:51That came back tenfold just on the tour alone.
- 11:53So that's always kind of an inching little story at that.
- 11:55Great story after.
- 11:56Sure.
- 11:58Yeah.
- 11:59John Shirley got the car in 1999.
- 12:02John, I believe at that point in time was only shortly
- 12:06thereafter, he was still working.
- 12:07You know, he was the former CEO of Microsoft and he got the vehicle
- 12:11and he used it quite a bit.
- 12:12I mean, he took it to all the Caino classics.
- 12:15He took it to the Monterey Historic Races.
- 12:17I mean, he really, really had a lot of fun with the car and showed it
- 12:19off, and everyone, as Sam mentioned, knew it as the white Ferrari, GTO.
- 12:24It's a real special car and obviously, uh, John was heavily involved with,
- 12:29you know, a lot of other things that he did at Pebble Beach as far as showing
- 12:33other vehicles and doing Concor events.
- 12:35So he is a well-known name, so he did it from all sides.
- 12:38He was not only showing cars, he was doing track days with cars and
- 12:43heavily involved with doing everything, even involved obviously with Froy
- 12:46class CK, getting the car certified.
- 12:49With Ferrari Classic K. He's been an outstanding caretaker and obviously we can
- 12:53see for multiple decades, which is great.
- 12:55Then the previous owner of that, Jack Sears, you know, he had it for 20 plus
- 12:59years himself, which was great to see, and they thoroughly enjoyed the car.
- 13:03If you look at the history on that racing historics and everything like that,
- 13:06that car was out there in the public beauty in motion, I guess you could say.
- 13:09I mean, it's just a fantastic car.
- 13:11Chris, you touched on, you know, the car's obviously got its red book.
- 13:14It's got the classic case certification.
- 13:15That's Ferrari going through and saying, yes, this is how this car came from the
- 13:18factory for this auction itself coming up.
- 13:21What would need to be done or what gets done to the car itself,
- 13:24especially a car at that level, getting it ready for the auction.
- 13:28What gets done prior to the auction, John, he has his own gentleman
- 13:31that works for him, Fred, and they really take care of all the cars.
- 13:34The cars are extremely well maintained.
- 13:36The whole collection that he has.
- 13:38And this car in particular, obviously was no different than any other one.
- 13:41That being said, when John first had the car, it was red.
- 13:44When he first purchased the car, it was red.
- 13:46And then in 2008, I believe the car got the classic case certification
- 13:51and that's when they went ahead and they, Ferrari made a new engine block.
- 13:55That was installed in the car and it has the designation on there, the internal
- 13:59number, 2300 slash 62 EE for Echo, which designates that it is a GTO motor,
- 14:05which is done right from the factory.
- 14:07So at some point early in its life, the engine was replaced.
- 14:10It was a two 50 short wheel base competency on engine
- 14:13that was put in for some time.
- 14:14Then there was a two 50 GTE engine that was put in, but
- 14:17right now it has the proper specification motor that's in there.
- 14:21From the factory.
- 14:22So the car was mechanically maintained, but it was never restored.
- 14:27The car is still not a complete frame wall for restoration.
- 14:30John had the car, it was Red John used the gentleman, I believe Butch Denison
- 14:34did the car up in Washington State and he brought the car back to white.
- 14:38But initially, John Shirley wasn't convinced to make the car white.
- 14:42It was the guys at Ferrari Classic K.
- 14:44It was actually Marco Origi who really pressed the issue with him.
- 14:48And then sure enough, John painted the car in 2016, I believe, and
- 14:53then the first time it came out was at Windsor Castle in the uk.
- 14:57And that's when you know the big puff was, Hey, there's a white GTO.
- 15:01Because for many, many, many, many years, the car was red.
- 15:04I don't think a lot of people knew, and the internet isn't what it is today.
- 15:08I mean, every year it seems like the internet evolves and there was no
- 15:10ai, you know, unless you went ahead and scrubbed it and found photos.
- 15:13Many of the photos that you found were from very, very early in the days.
- 15:17But for a good period of its time, the car was red and now it's back to the
- 15:20original way that it left the factory, which is white in the collector car world.
- 15:24There was that period where it was like basically restored to
- 15:26better than new, not so much.
- 15:28Really follow, Hey, this is not left the factory.
- 15:29Then all of a sudden we went into the barn finds and everything, but then all of a
- 15:32sudden, hey, let's go back to originality.
- 15:34It's fantastic.
- 15:34He did that, went back to the white and he got talked into or convinced
- 15:37that, hey, that's the way to go.
- 15:38And obviously it turned out I think it was an excellent choice 'cause
- 15:41it just stands out from the rest because you get it all lined up.
- 15:44Red, red, black, just one white one, stick it in there.
- 15:46So I mean it's, it's great to see for sure when you look at the list and you look at
- 15:50the original colors from the factory, you know there's some obviously silvers green.
- 15:55But to your point, primarily ena, I mean most of 'em are red mentioned, the
- 15:59engine block it and recast and looking at description, what you guys have that
- 16:04that's coming with another motor, correct?
- 16:06Yeah.
- 16:06The engine that Chris described is in the car and, and there's a
- 16:09spare motor that will come with it.
- 16:11So John, for as many events as he participated in, you know, was to,
- 16:15to be able to have a motor like that that you could really get
- 16:17after and get on and not worry about and you know, be able to protect.
- 16:21The engine that Chris described and make sure that that stays as
- 16:24pristine and proper as it needs to be.
- 16:25But having another, another engine to be able to use to, to drive the car.
- 16:29John drove the car, he drove it respectfully, but he, but he enjoyed,
- 16:32you know, when we were out there with him a couple of months ago, you know,
- 16:35he very explicitly stated, you know, that cars are meant to be driven.
- 16:37These cars are meant to be enjoyed.
- 16:39This race car is, wants you to drive it.
- 16:41So being able to have that ability to drive it and drive it.
- 16:44I mean aggressively as you want to, but in, you know, not to
- 16:46worry as much about the motor.
- 16:48You'll have that opportunity to swap a motor if need be for the new owner.
- 16:52Hot rod motor.
- 16:53That's what he calls it.
- 16:56That's right.
- 16:56The hot rod motor.
- 16:57Well, that's common too with a lot of higher value cars like that, is
- 17:01they drop in a different engine and keep that one safe, which is great.
- 17:04'cause that means they're getting out there using their car and participating.
- 17:07Right.
- 17:08This day and age, there's so many historic events that you can
- 17:10participate in you across the globe.
- 17:13This car will get you into every single one, no questions asked.
- 17:16I mean, that's like your golden ticket to participate in all these events.
- 17:19So whoever the new owner may be, the palace is open, so to speak.
- 17:23In regards to just attending any event you'd want, and not to mention, I
- 17:27dunno if you can confirm it, but don't the GTO owners do their own kind of
- 17:31little private events every few years?
- 17:33They did.
- 17:33So a few years ago they had a couple different reunions and if you look it up.
- 17:37You'll see that they had the 50th anniversary GTO tour in 2012 and they
- 17:42actually had another one they put together with Kena who runs Caino events and
- 17:47they gotta get together and they try to get as many of the guys together.
- 17:50But it's a real special crew.
- 17:52Obviously the gentleman that have the cars and you know, some of the cars have
- 17:55swapped in and swapped out, you know, the Rick Workmans and different guys like that
- 17:59that had the cars and they've sold them.
- 18:00But for the most part into what you mentioned earlier, you got Nick
- 18:04Mason, you got Anthony Bamford, you got Brandon Wangs, you.
- 18:07At all these different guys that have had the cars for long term
- 18:10ownership and they do get together for a reunion every so many years.
- 18:14It's not every single year.
- 18:16It seems like it's every few years.
- 18:18I think every five, to be honest.
- 18:20What's the amount of documentation is car comes with?
- 18:22'cause I think that's one thing that's key, especially in these higher
- 18:25value cars, is documentation history.
- 18:27I mean what like documentation wise, what's gonna be coming with the car?
- 18:30Sam can probably touch on that because I didn't see the documentation,
- 18:33but I know that there is.
- 18:34Plenty of stuff with John for sure.
- 18:37I have not physically reviewed all the documentation, but I did
- 18:40see a couple of big books sitting on the desk with a lot in there.
- 18:43I mean, I was amazed at how much, how many historic photos of, of all the
- 18:47different races that this car participated in at the beginning, you know, 62 to.
- 18:5169 ish or 68 ish, something like that with all the different photos, photo
- 18:55documentation we have on this car and, and as it went through all the
- 18:58different drivers and the different races that it was participating
- 19:01in, as was pretty impressive.
- 19:03Obviously the Red Book and the ownership history is documented
- 19:05all the way back to the beginning.
- 19:07It's got good stuff, be impressive.
- 19:09And I'm sure it would take someone a few weeks to go through all that.
- 19:11And just as us being all car nerds, we'd sit there and eat it all up.
- 19:15Just every single line.
- 19:16'cause just seeing that history, knowing what that thing did, where it
- 19:18raced, who's raced it, I mean, 'cause you got, you know, Graham Hill, Roy
- 19:21Salvador, I mean, it's just unbelievable.
- 19:23The people that have gotten behind the wheel of that car,
- 19:26put it through its paces back in the day is just unbelievable.
- 19:28Yep.
- 19:29I wanna talk a little bit more about Mecu Kissie itself.
- 19:31'cause this is becoming the preeminent auction of the year.
- 19:35Not just volume, but the quality of cars you guys are getting.
- 19:38Sam, how's this evolving where you guys are starting to get a lot more of these
- 19:41highly collectible elite cars and how's this changing Mecca's DNA in regards to,
- 19:46its like core brand and I've been with the company, I think this is my 18th year.
- 19:4918th or 19th year.
- 19:50And so, you know, I, I think I was 2004 or five was my first Kissimmee auction.
- 19:56The auction, I think, started in 2000, was the very first one, which started
- 20:00buying the laundromat in Kissimmee, in, in Old Town, and evolved over to the,
- 20:04uh, I think with like 50 cars in it.
- 20:06And then by that time it, it moved to OCL Air to Carriage Park.
- 20:09When I was first there, the auction and the cars were all inside in one
- 20:12tent, the corner of the property.
- 20:13But every single year.
- 20:15Since then, it has grown almost double every single year, year after year.
- 20:20Started out with a couple, you know, when I was there, it
- 20:22was probably two or 300 cars.
- 20:23Started out as an all Corvette only auction.
- 20:26Think in conjunction with an NCRS event that was down there.
- 20:28Dana decided to open up to all types of cars and it really just
- 20:31took fire and never looked back.
- 20:33And it has, it's grown and grown exponentially year after year
- 20:36to somewhere around 2010 ish.
- 20:40It, the hold is the world's largest electric car auction with the volume
- 20:43of cars that were at one event.
- 20:44And continue to grow past that.
- 20:46We're pushing 5,000 cars now, so from 50 cars behind the laundromat
- 20:50to 5,000 cars in 13 days long, it has just become a spectacle.
- 20:55It's the greatest car show on earth, in my opinion, far as where you can see,
- 20:58you know, every type of vehicle that you can imagine is there that week, and it
- 21:02really sets the tone for the collective car market for the rest of the year.
- 21:05How do you guys go about, you know, having that volume of cars,
- 21:07obviously over multiple days.
- 21:09How do you start organizing, okay, we're gonna have these go on this day,
- 21:13these on this day, and I love it, the moniker, leading up to Super Saturday
- 21:18when you have all the big hitters.
- 21:19I mean, how do you guys kind of go about.
- 21:20Figuring out what goes where.
- 21:22Anytime you put four to 5,000 cars in, in one place, you know, how
- 21:26do you disseminate what needs to go where and how do you do that?
- 21:28And we do that by value.
- 21:30You know, the, the weekends are our most attended events, both the first
- 21:33weekend and the second weekend are the, are the most heavily attended.
- 21:36So, you know, the, the very first day, day one will be,
- 21:39you know, relatively expensive.
- 21:40What we like to refer to as entry level collectibles.
- 21:42Things of people that are just looking to get into the market, dip their toe
- 21:45in the water and, and get into it.
- 21:47We've got a lot more affordable cars in those early days.
- 21:49Sort of apex and lead ourselves into that first weekend.
- 21:52And we get some really great cars.
- 21:53That first weekend type of quality you would see in some of our bigger days at
- 21:57at some of our other events throughout the country throughout the year.
- 21:59And then we do a bit of a reset.
- 22:01There's sort of two big crowds.
- 22:02You have the first weekend crowd, which is a little bit more regional.
- 22:05Then the, the national and international crowd starts to come in day after day
- 22:09as we lead into the second weekend.
- 22:10So Tuesday is slightly smaller, then it gets bigger on Wednesday, which
- 22:14gets bigger on Thursday, bigger to Friday, and then onto Saturday.
- 22:17And everything culminates at the, the peak on Saturday.
- 22:19So Friday and Saturday, the second weekend are our two biggest days.
- 22:23It's heavy metal from start to finish on both those days.
- 22:25So the cool thing is, anyone that's in the hobby or whatever level you can
- 22:29get involved in Kissimmee and be a part of it and connect with it, you know,
- 22:32whether as a buyer or a seller, but even as you know, from a spectator's
- 22:35perspective, to see cars that are pretty attainable up to the aspirational
- 22:38vehicles that to watch these guys.
- 22:40Trading high dollar, extremely valuable cars into that second weekend is,
- 22:44is what makes Kissimmee so special.
- 22:45Great.
- 22:46'cause a lot of people, either it is their first collectible, the only collectible
- 22:49they're gonna buy, but to your point is there's something there for everyone.
- 22:51Not just price point, but style, genre heavy.
- 22:55I mean, there's something there for everybody.
- 22:56You know, in cars like this, GTO that we're talking about here, I mean obviously
- 22:59is the headliner for Saturday, the second weekend as Kissimmee continue to grow
- 23:04and the international attention that it receives and the amount of people that
- 23:06come to it, all 50 states in the, in the United States and, and from, I think it
- 23:10was 30 different countries around the world that participate in this event.
- 23:13The fact that we have that big of an audience and that amount of eyeballs
- 23:17focused on one location at one point in time has really opened the eyes
- 23:20to a lot of folks to realize that if I wanna sell my car and I wanna
- 23:24bring the most attention to it in one place and and maximize the exposure,
- 23:28Kissimmee is the place to do that.
- 23:29And I think that the more and more people realize, you know, you can take
- 23:31a car like this and go to Monterey and compete with six different auction
- 23:34events going on the same weekend, on the same day at the same time.
- 23:38Or you can put this car on a pedestal in front of an international
- 23:41audience that's arguably bigger.
- 23:43And find success being a multi-day event over, you know, a week
- 23:46and a half, two weeks roughly.
- 23:47What other events also go on during that?
- 23:49It's not 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM it's cars going across the block.
- 23:52What else do you guys have going on there?
- 23:54Well, it is 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM with cars going across.
- 23:56Oh, it across the block.
- 23:56Oh, okay.
- 23:57That does happen.
- 23:57Oh yeah.
- 23:58No, we're bell to be, we're selling 350 on or on some of the
- 24:01days, almost 400 cars in a day.
- 24:03To sell that many, that amount of cars, you have to work that
- 24:05hard and, and work that long.
- 24:06But the event itself, we've got entertainment going outside with music
- 24:10and things going outside an adventure zone for kids, for families to come out
- 24:13and enjoy themselves and they can get involved and do, you know, automotive
- 24:16orientated events with the kids?
- 24:18We'll have speakers and, and seminars going on at our midway stage out front.
- 24:22We do car parades, you know, the cars don't just sit on display forever
- 24:25until they're time to go to the block.
- 24:26We do some hand selects and we do car parades across our midways like
- 24:29we like to call it, so folks can sit and watch the cars, run, drive,
- 24:32listen to 'em, huge food truck area.
- 24:35I think over a dozen food trucks that are out there with all different
- 24:37types of food for people to get involved with and, and hang out.
- 24:40It's just a, from a car enthusiast perspective, it's like Disneyland
- 24:43or Disney World, I should say, as we're in Orlando, but.
- 24:45There's just a tongue going on.
- 24:46It's a, it's very stimulating this day and age too.
- 24:49How has, you know, working social media, YouTube, and obviously you
- 24:53guys are broadcasting now too, how has that changed your guys' approach
- 24:56and has that really helped you guys acquire and grow in regards, not just
- 25:00volume, but cars, you guys are getting.
- 25:02We're very much also in the entertainment business.
- 25:04Our auctions are broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Plus we launched,
- 25:08uh, mecom TV on the Roku channel.
- 25:10So we have 24 7 Mecu auctions rolling.
- 25:12We're produc content for that.
- 25:13We've, we're nearing a show on, on the GTO, on Mecu tv, you know,
- 25:18between YouTube and all the content we produce for that social media.
- 25:21Insta, we have a, a whole team dedicated to social media from Instagram.
- 25:25Facebook and TikTok and all the like, and you know, we're very much an entertainment
- 25:28company just as much as we are an auction company now, with the kind of cars
- 25:31across our block and the, and the the cool stories that we're able to tell.
- 25:35We've got content coming out of our ears and we love telling the story
- 25:37about video and it's, it's fun.
- 25:39It's why, it's why I got into this.
- 25:41Yeah.
- 25:41I mean that's one great thing about this industry or just cars itself, is
- 25:45knowing the story behind a lot of it.
- 25:46'cause a lot, every car's got a story.
- 25:48It's fantastic to learn a lot of these things and delving into
- 25:50those creates, I don't wanna say a mystique, but it really kind of
- 25:53can grow and make that car special.
- 25:55No, absolutely.
- 25:56I mean, the amount of cars that we see year after year, I think
- 25:58Chris wouldn't feel the same.
- 26:00I mean, we're in the cars are our work.
- 26:01That's our life.
- 26:02That's what we do day in, day out every day.
- 26:04But when you find a car with a great story behind it and the people that
- 26:07you meet because of that story or the connections that you make because of
- 26:10that, that's what makes this stuff cool.
- 26:12The cars are great and then people ask us all the time, what's your favorite car?
- 26:14What car do you want?
- 26:15It's, to me, it changes all the time.
- 26:17I mean, it's, it's about the people and the stories that you hear and
- 26:20learn and the connections that you make along the way is what makes
- 26:22this this hobby super cool and fun and, and great to be a part of.
- 26:25Looking at it, we have 70 plus Ferrari.
- 26:28As of now, basically going across the block down and kissing me.
- 26:31You know, obviously Callate in the GTO, but you have a very, very
- 26:34nice selection of Ferraris that are gonna be crossing that block.
- 26:36Absolutely.
- 26:37Probably one of the best collections of Ferraris that we've ever offered for sale.
- 26:41Yeah.
- 26:41The Bachman collection, which we'll do in a couple weeks.
- 26:44We're gonna do an episode on that one as well.
- 26:45'cause there's some very special vehicles in that one as well.
- 26:48Mm-hmm.
- 26:49Chris, I'm gonna have you kind of touch on this, MECU, obviously what
- 26:52they're getting now and get involved in the level of cars they're doing.
- 26:55I mean, it's just top notch.
- 26:56What was the choice?
- 26:58I mean, going to Mecu, what was the thought about, hey, let's, this car
- 27:01is gonna be best served at Mecu?
- 27:02So what happened was, originally I was at Retro Mobile in Paris and you
- 27:07know, doing your normal visits, you're meeting all the different people.
- 27:09I bumped into one of the Pebble Beach judges.
- 27:12His name is Richard Ado.
- 27:13He is also an author and writes some great books on French cars.
- 27:16We had a really good dinner together.
- 27:18You know, we met the year before and had dinner as well, and then the
- 27:20following day he went back to Washington.
- 27:22He is a very good friend of John Shirley.
- 27:25A couple weeks later we had the event that was at Amelia Island, and
- 27:28I see Richard as I'm checking outta the hotel and he says to me, uh.
- 27:32Hey, where you heading back to?
- 27:33I said, I'm heading back to Orlando, catching a flight.
- 27:35He said, you mind if I tag along?
- 27:37So he jumps in the car.
- 27:38We're probably an hour into the ride, and he looks at me and he says, Hey,
- 27:41you got anybody for John's two 50 GTO?
- 27:44I almost went off the road to be honest with you, and I looked at
- 27:46him and I said, you're serious?
- 27:48He said, yeah.
- 27:49And the first person that popped in my mind was Dana, because Dana's a collector.
- 27:52I picked up the phone that evening.
- 27:54I called Dana and we had a chat.
- 27:57Dana said, listen, you know, I was already involved with helping Dana with the 2
- 28:0175 lm. We were restoring that car, and I was looking after that project in Italy.
- 28:06I said to him, which is, is this something you'd want to add to the collection?
- 28:09And he said, you know what?
- 28:10Let's have a conversation with John.
- 28:12We had a conversation with John.
- 28:13We went out there and Dana, John, myself, we all sat together.
- 28:16The decision was made 'cause it wasn't something that Dana was
- 28:19gonna put into his collection.
- 28:20It was best suited to bring it to public auction.
- 28:23Obviously John's still the owner of the car, and we connected Dana and
- 28:27John together and it was a match made in heaven, as they say, because as Sam
- 28:31pointed out, you know, and you pointed out there's over 70 cars going to Kissimmee.
- 28:36We're gonna talk about the Bachman collection in the future, which
- 28:38is a real special collection.
- 28:40To my knowledge, I don't know of any Ferrari collection or this
- 28:44amount of Ferraris that's ever been presented at one auction at one
- 28:47time, ever, at any point in time.
- 28:50So it's super exciting.
- 28:52You know Dana, from a personal level, he's got a an amazing Ferrari collection.
- 28:56He's a real true connoisseur to the brand.
- 28:58He shows his cars.
- 28:59He's obviously involved with Pebble Beach.
- 29:01He does the Caino events, he does the Amelia Island events.
- 29:04Dana's obviously the right guy that's personally involved.
- 29:07It's not just a business.
- 29:08Dana has a true love for the cars.
- 29:10I really honestly felt, you know, when the conversation came up and it just
- 29:14evolved so quickly, it really, really, really went well and it was great to
- 29:17be part of it, to see the meeting with John and obviously with Dana together.
- 29:22It was, it was a great, great time and it's, and it's worked out well.
- 29:25That's what awesome thing about Dana is, you know, he is a true collector.
- 29:28I mean, he has a passion for these cars as well, and seeing his unbelievable
- 29:31collections, you know, fantastic as well.
- 29:33When Dana kind of dropped that bomb on everyone else at Mecu,
- 29:37what was the thoughts and enthusiasm around the offices?
- 29:40Our marketing team got extremely excited really quick.
- 29:42I mean, you know, obviously, you know, the nice thing is, you know when,
- 29:45when you're as promoters of auctions and you know, with headliners and
- 29:48headliners like this, especially to get.
- 29:51As early as we're able to do and be able to kick off our Kissimmee campaigns with
- 29:56a car of this magnitude was exciting for all of us and to, you know, really,
- 30:00you know, set the tone, set the tone early and March towards January.
- 30:03I mean, we, we announced the, the GTO was coming to Kissimmee.
- 30:06We announced it in Monterey in August, that our auction air being
- 30:09able to, to launch the campaigns for Kissimmee in the middle of August
- 30:13with a headliner like this, GTO.
- 30:15It was the best.
- 30:16We were excited.
- 30:17Not just that car, but the amount of other Ferrari they're gonna be
- 30:20crossing the block and kissing me.
- 30:21This is really gonna kind of set the tone for the market because you know
- 30:25you have your top end, I'm not gonna say bottom end with like some three
- 30:29oh eights and three 20 eights, but.
- 30:30This is really gonna kind of set the tone in regards to where
- 30:33the market's going into 2026.
- 30:36In my mind, it's kind of a big responsibility in regards to all
- 30:39the eyes that are gonna be on You guys we're up to that task.
- 30:42That challenge in Kissimmee for years now has been that market tone setter
- 30:46for whatever type of vehicle for all the different markets, right?
- 30:48So.
- 30:49Whether it be muscle cars or Corvettes or Ferraris or, or whatever.
- 30:52I mean, you know, the fact that we kick it off in January, we start
- 30:55the year off with such a bang with this auction, it sets the tone for
- 30:58the market for the rest of the year.
- 30:59No doubt about it.
- 31:00So we do it on an annual basis and we're excited to do it for Ferrari.
- 31:03As you delve into these more, do you guys see yourself.
- 31:07Stick into your true path in regards to how you guys do your auctions?
- 31:12Or do you see yourself doing something a little different with like, say,
- 31:15a separate high end type situation?
- 31:17We do it all together, but we also, we do what's necessary for the different
- 31:21types of vehicles and set the stage.
- 31:22I mean the displays that we put together and produce in Kissimmee or
- 31:25our second to none, and we will do these cars justice for what they deserve.
- 31:29And you know, having the opportunity to have these on display is a hell
- 31:31of an attraction for the people that come just to watch the show.
- 31:34But to segregate.
- 31:35Where we position these cars in the auction, how we put 'em on display, how
- 31:38we represent them, how we present them.
- 31:40It's taken Kissimmee to another level.
- 31:42Once again, as I described, as we continue this growth trajectory for
- 31:46Kissimmee and adding this layer on top of what's already extremely successful
- 31:50and, and has become the world's largest collector car auction, they have this
- 31:54on top of that is, is incredible.
- 31:56We're proud to do it.
- 31:57We're proud, we're excited to have it.
- 31:58We're pleased that the, you know, the sellers have given us the opportunity
- 32:01to present these cars for sale at auction in Kissimmee, and we're
- 32:04excited to see what the results.
- 32:05Yeah, it's gonna be a packed room, that's for sure.
- 32:07And I know I plan on trying to be there for it as well, especially seeing all this
- 32:10go across because it's gonna be fantastic.
- 32:12Yep.
- 32:13Chris, when was the last time your GTO crossed the block open auction like this?
- 32:16A couple years ago, there was one that passed over the block and
- 32:19there was a series two that passed.
- 32:21There's never been a white one.
- 32:22No.
- 32:22That's what sets this car apart and, and look, you know, we kind of touched on it
- 32:26earlier about, you know, Sam mentioned it, I talked about it a little bit, John,
- 32:30how involved he was and some of them cars, you know, they've been restored.
- 32:33There was one that was totally restored and it, you know, it didn't look like
- 32:37that obviously when it left the factory in 62 or 63 when that particular car left.
- 32:42This car has a real period correct feel to it.
- 32:46It's just an amazing car.
- 32:48And then, you know, on top of it you have the hot rod motor.
- 32:50It's white.
- 32:51The provenance of who owned the car, who drove the car, Mike Parks, Graham
- 32:55Hill, former, the one world champion.
- 32:57You got really, really, really special people that race this car in period.
- 33:01It's, it's a real special car.
- 33:03It really is.
- 33:04Obviously to bid on this car price wise, where, and I'm not gonna get into say,
- 33:09Hey, what do you think it's gonna go for?
- 33:10Because we're not even gonna touch that.
- 33:12What does someone gotta do for a car at that level, registering, whatnot.
- 33:15I mean, is there anything different they have to do that wouldn't be say, under
- 33:18different from standard, just registering to bid every situation's different.
- 33:21Obviously, you know, there relationships are big components of this and you know.
- 33:26You know, if we have someone that's comes out of nowhere from, you
- 33:28know, somewhere in Europe or that, that we're not aware of, obviously
- 33:32there'll be conversations that'll have, and we'll set their financial
- 33:35verification up, get 'em registered to bid with an understanding that they
- 33:38have the means to purchase that car.
- 33:39And, you know, ens are, are always helpful and, and things like that,
- 33:42but you know, it, it gets a car like this, it gets to be a case by case.
- 33:46I mean, you know, rarely do you have someone that just goes and registers a
- 33:49bid online and just, you know, pops outta the woodwork, you know, but it's, it's
- 33:54not to say it's never happened, but it.
- 33:55Yeah, I mean, it's, it's an easy process.
- 33:57Getting registered is easy, you know, getting a hold of us and having a
- 33:59conversation with our bid services team and, and getting connected.
- 34:02Chris obviously is, is helping with his context and throughout the
- 34:05country and, and around the world.
- 34:07It's not a overly complex process, but you know, you can't just log
- 34:10in and push a button without any type of financial verification.
- 34:13Bid, bid, bid, yeah.
- 34:15Your media pass request has probably gone through the roof.
- 34:19Yeah, there's a lot of, a lot of media attention.
- 34:21There's a lot of, you know, a lot coming in on that actually, you know, vetting
- 34:24some of these, you know, some of these media folks is probably more difficult
- 34:27than vetting some of these high network individuals with, on your Roku channel.
- 34:32You guys are gonna doing a, a special on this car specifically,
- 34:36and I would assume that on the Roku gets played multiple times.
- 34:39Yeah, it'll rear multiple times.
- 34:40I think it's gonna rear air four times a day after we premiere
- 34:43it Thursday, November 6th.
- 34:44It will premier at 8:00 PM Eastern on Mecu CV on Roku.
- 34:48And then after premieres it'll, it'll cycle through and re-air, I
- 34:50think four times a day between now and Kissimmee auction in January.
- 34:53You know, be sure to, uh, check out all of Mecu M'S social media pages
- 34:57and sites 'cause they are doing a wonderful job showcasing that, what
- 35:01that car is and just how special it is.
- 35:03'cause it's unbelievable.
- 35:04And I'm really excited about this auction.
- 35:06It's gonna be the biggest.
- 35:07Ferrari auction at one place on one time ever.
- 35:11You're never gonna see the quality of cars at one place, at one venue that
- 35:15you're gonna see at this auction.
- 35:16This is gonna be historic and like Sam said, greatest spectacle on sports.
- 35:21They always used to say was the Indy 500.
- 35:23Well, this would be the greatest spectacle in in auctions for sure.
- 35:26This is.
- 35:27You gotta be part of it.
- 35:28This is a moment in history, you know, it's one of those things, it only comes
- 35:31and happens every so often and I think this is gonna be a really special moment
- 35:35and this car's gonna really be strong and I'm really excited to see, 'cause
- 35:38you know, not just this one, but all the other fris gonna be crossing the block.
- 35:42This is a moment in Ferrari history in regards to what's gonna be happening.
- 35:44'cause there's a lot of special vehicles.
- 35:46Again, I appreciate you guys coming on.
- 35:48Uh, I look forward in a couple weeks.
- 35:49We're gonna come back.
- 35:50We're gonna visit the Bachman collection, which is also gonna be
- 35:52crossing the block down in Kissie.
- 35:54And that one's gonna be spectacular in its, its own right.
- 35:57The quality and what the cars are in that collection is unbelievable.
- 36:01And Chris will be back.
- 36:02Sam, we'll be back.
- 36:02And to everyone listening, appreciate you tuning in and stay tuned
- 36:06till uh, next time you got it.
