Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another Amharic lesson? Luna: Absolutely, Lucas. I've been practicing those verbs from last episode, 'to learn' and 'to teach'. Lucas: Nice! And today we're going to learn two more very useful verbs: መግዛት and መሸጥ. Luna: Okay, what do those mean? Lucas: መግዛት means 'to buy', and መሸጥ means 'to sell'. Luna: Oh, perfect for when I'm at the market! Let me try: መግዛት. Lucas: Exactly, you've got it. Now let's hear it in the 'I' form: እገዛለሁ, I buy. Luna: እገዛለሁ. Lucas: Great. And for 'I sell': እሸጣለሁ. Luna: እሸጣለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. Now, imagine you're at the market and you want to buy bread, which we learned earlier: ዳቦ. How would you say 'I want to buy bread'? Luna: Umm... ዳቦ መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ? Lucas: Yes! You remembered 'to want' from last episode. That's exactly right: ዳቦ መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: Aww, I love that. So I can use this at the market. What about asking 'What should I buy?' Lucas: Good question. That would be: ምን ልገዛ? Luna: ምን ልገዛ? Lucas: Exactly. And if someone asks you that, you can answer with what you want to buy. Luna: Let me practice a full scene. Say I'm at the market and I want to buy fruit. I remember the word for fruit is ፍራፍሬ. So: ፍራፍሬ መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Perfect sentence! And if you were a seller, you'd say: እሸጣለሁ. Luna: Right. Now let's say I'm a seller and someone asks me what I sell. How would I say 'I sell coffee'? Lucas: Coffee is ቡና. So you'd say: ቡና እሸጣለሁ. Luna: ቡና እሸጣለሁ. Lucas: You're a natural. You know, it's conversations like these that make me love teaching Amharic. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we'd love your support. Luna: Yeah, we deliberately don't run ads on these episodes. If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: It keeps the show going and helps us create more episodes like this. So let's keep learning! Now, let's use መሸጥ in a question. How would you ask 'Do you sell water?' Luna: Water is ውሃ, so: ውሃ ትሸጣለህ? Lucas: Exactly. ውሃ ትሸጣለህ? And if the answer is yes, they'd say: አዎ, እሸጣለሁ. Luna: Let me try a full dialogue. I'm at the market and I see a seller. I ask: ምን ትሸጣለህ? Lucas: They might say: ቡና እሸጣለሁ. Then you could say: ቡና መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: That flows so nicely. So I'm learning both verbs in one conversation. Lucas: Exactly. And you can use them everywhere. Let's do one more: 'I want to buy a book.' Book is መጽሐፍ. So: መጽሐፍ መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: መጽሐፍ መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ. That's a long one but I'll practice. Lucas: You'll get it. And remember, we learned the verb 'to want' in episode 122, so you're building on that. Luna: It's all coming together. So today's phrases: መግዛት, መሸጥ, እገዛለሁ, እሸጣለሁ, ምን ልገዛ?, and ዳቦ መግዛት እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: That's a solid set. Practice those and you'll be ready for any market scenario. Luna: I can't wait to use them. Thanks, Lucas! And thanks to our listeners for joining us. Lucas: Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Amharic with Fexingo.
