Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Adriana, you sometimes run uh anywhere from seventy to ninety miles a week.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Uh you're a two fifty-four marathoner currently.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Uh you teach full time middle school at that, and somehow you seem like you're having more fun than anyone.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: People get paid to do it.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: The the 20 miler who gets to run a lot less, like, how do you love running so much?
- 0:24SPEAKER_05: Well, I really I guess it just comes back to my why.
- 0:28SPEAKER_05: Like, I very stereotypical pipeline run uh soccer player to runner.
- 0:36SPEAKER_05: Um, I played soccer growing up.
- 0:38SPEAKER_05: I did every I tried every sport under the sun, like if my mom would let me, like even gymnastics, that didn't well.
- 0:43SPEAKER_05: I learned how to do a cartwheel and I was like, all right, I'm good.
- 0:45SPEAKER_05: That's enough.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I was doing soccer, and I had a really awesome high school cross-country coach who coached my brother.
- 0:56SPEAKER_05: Like, he knew how good my brother was, and he was like, You should come out, stay in shape for soccer, and all that.
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: And it was just like like I always think about him and how encouraging he was.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: And when I came to the sport of cross country, the community, like soccer, it was like everybody was fighting for that starting spot.
- 1:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's high school girls, like it's it's it's a little intense.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: And um, I loved soccer, but when I went to run, I like was not fast right away.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Um, I was decent, and then um this girl on our team, she was like running, she could run a 19-minute 5k in high school and then also go and go to state for the 400 meter and the hurdles and like do all these sprints.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: And and she went for long jump too.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: And she, when I finished my very slow 5k, she was like, you did it, da-da-da-da! Like, like just cheering for me, jumping up and down, like I just won the Olympics.
- 1:59SPEAKER_05: Like, and I was like, this is so awesome because it's not you versus anyone, it's you versus yourself, and like you have this opportunity just to grow and get bigger and better at what you're doing, and it doesn't like running you can keep doing for your life, right?
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: Like, yep, other sports, like you kind of fade out college, like if you get to go pro, whatever, running, like everybody gets to do it, and it's such a community builder.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: Okay, so I I think like I just find my way, like I took a break after collegiately running.
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: I had a horrible experience doing that, I've shared, but um, I took a break and somehow found myself back in doing even more the marathon.
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: So, like it just kind of brings the best out of me, and so I think that's why I keep coming back to it.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: How do you like rev up or get so happy to run early in the morning?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I've seen your runs pre-teaching 13 miles before breakfast, lunch, kids uh class.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Like, how does that happen?
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: Um, so I guess it's just always like been a routine with being um a student athlete, and then um then I wasn't a student athlete, and I just kind of like that was what I did.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: And so when I was student teaching, I wasn't running for the school.
- 3:16SPEAKER_05: I was starting to dabble in marathons, and they had a club team that I did for fun.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: Um, but I was student teaching full time, so I was working 40 hours for no pay.
- 3:26SPEAKER_05: So far, actually, I was paying the college, you know.
- 3:28SPEAKER_05: So um, but I was waking up and doing my training, like the same routine I have now, actually being a teacher, and I just found it made me a better meat, like mornings.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: That whipped cream I put on my coffee, like, ugh, it gets me every time.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: I'm an adult now, I can put whipped cream on everything, you know.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, so I just I think I've I love my routine, and so getting to get up and like doing what I love in the morning before I do other things I love, like like why not be happy?
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: Obviously, there's days where I'm not like I'm not like feeling the run as much, but like the idea and the process of my mornings, like I enjoyed doing it on a Saturday morning at 5 a.m.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: for a long run, you know?
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Like, so I just enjoy it.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Were you always competitive with the running or no?
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: Um, no, like my sophomore year when I first so I actually went to conditioning freshman year of high school and I quit after a week.
- 4:31SPEAKER_05: I said, this is awful.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: I hate cross country.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: Um, and then sophomore year, I came back and I stuck it through, but like getting faster was not a concept to me.
- 4:41SPEAKER_05: Like I think I ran, and this is like a like I said, this was a decent time for somebody just starting the sport.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: Like, I think I ran 25 minutes in the 5k, and I just I ran that every single time.
- 4:53SPEAKER_05: And I did not like the like I was just showing up to practice and just doing whatever the coach said, like getting faster did not did not occur to me, but I also wasn't in love with running as much as I am now, like, and so I think once I started to um really try at running, and first it was because um I not to get a little too deep too quick, but um, I experienced a really hard like wave of depression in high school.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Lots of little things were happening and some big things, and I coped with it through an eating disorder.
- 5:29SPEAKER_05: And a lot of runners go through that because uh because of running, like lighter faster the way they look.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: And I was the opposite.
- 5:37SPEAKER_05: Like I like I got faster because I was actually trying at the sport and actually running at the practice when I was supposed to and doing what the coach says.
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: Um, and he pulled me aside when he saw me at conditioning and how like much weight I had lost.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: And he was like, Yeah, you're not allowed to compete.
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: Like, and coaches to do that, usually coaches are telling girls and boys the opposite, you know, like smaller, faster.
- 6:03SPEAKER_05: And so for him to say, you're not allowed to run on a race until like you're healthy.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: And I was also seeing my time get faster, and I was like, Well, what if I actually fuel?
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: And like, like then how fast could I be?
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: And so I think it got like the competitiveness with running really just stemmed from myself.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't I get in my head, like everybody else, about everybody on social media and their times, and kind of like, ooh, like I want to run that, I want to like secretly beat her Strava today, you know?
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: But like really it's the competitiveness within yourself that like really like I think I was like, I want to be better than who she was, and just keep building on that, and it's so cool to see.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So essentially running like the improvement of yourself, seeing yourself get faster and like better than faster.
- 6:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and not necessarily like physically either.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: Like, I've really as I've grown up, I've grown mentally, and the way I used to talk to myself during those college races, and the way I talk about when I'm racing now, like total 180, so much more like positive and strength.
- 7:15SPEAKER_05: And um, I'm also Christian and I've developed and grown spiritually through running and my relationship with God, and it's how I connect with Him because you don't want to hear me sing, so I am toad deaf.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: So I worship through my workouts and my runs, and it's just a really, really cool experience that I've like unlocked this past lap my last training block.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: I really like delved into that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Pulling back a little bit, you hinted at it like running before and going through that that hard time.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Like, what was your relationship young version of you with running?
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: Um, well, I guess it was just kind of platonic.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: Um, like I just kind of like when I very first started, I just kind of was like, okay, like they said I should do this for soccer, all right.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: Um, it was fun to hang out with the girls.
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: Um before one of my first 5Ks, I ate a foot-long Subway sandwich.
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: And obviously, you know how that went.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Um, and so it was just very like fun.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: And then I started to like develop the like okay, running brings people together, running like makes me feel strong.
- 8:26SPEAKER_05: Running's a little bit more than just a sport to me, you know?
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: When that change came, do you remember when it felt like, oh man, I'm starting to love this more a lot more better than and run more and feeling the joy from it?
- 8:39SPEAKER_05: I think it came a little bit before college.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Um, when like and I had like recovered and felt really strong.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: And then in college, when I went through the um horrible coaching experience, um, it kind of got taken away from me.
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: And um I think I really discovered it after it was taken away.
- 9:03SPEAKER_05: After I was like, you know what, I'm done.
- 9:05SPEAKER_05: I stopped, got my first gym membership.
- 9:07SPEAKER_05: I didn't know how to not be an athlete.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: Um and then somehow I when I transferred schools and I'd quit running, they had the club team and I joined the club team, and it was that same thing from high school, like that community.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: Everybody was like, You're awesome.
- 9:23SPEAKER_05: No, you're awesome, you know, like as cheesy as it is.
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: And then I got the little I should do a marathon.
- 9:31SPEAKER_05: Forget the half.
- 9:32SPEAKER_05: Let me just do a marathon.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: We did half marathons all the time on Sunday morning long runs.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't need to do the half.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: I ended up doing a half before, but um, yeah, so I really think it happened like right before college, which made me want to run in college, and then that experience took it away for a little bit, but I guess it was just too strong to stay away.
- 9:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, or maybe it's something God's using me for.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: So I'm just like fully into it now, way more passionate than I've ever been in college or anything.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Adriana, that's what I love about your story.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Like you go from that, you rebuild your relationship with running, it means a lot more.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: You're like the happiest ever you have, you're enjoying it again.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And somehow you're getting faster.
- 10:17unknown: Yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: With work and everything, obviously, all the nuances that come with that.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: How?
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: I um like I like I said, people do not realize how much of a mental sport running is.
- 10:29SPEAKER_05: They they don't.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: And I think that was one thing.
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: Um, with getting stronger mentally, my fueling got stronger to fight back mentally against like restrictive eating and like lighter equals faster and all the stigma and stuff.
- 10:45SPEAKER_05: So that got stronger.
- 10:47SPEAKER_05: Um, each training block, it's like I learned something new.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: Um, and it I add to what I've done.
- 10:53SPEAKER_05: My first marathon, I coached myself, and um, it was so fun because I was listening to podcasts and I was just like, I'm gonna try this, I'm gonna try this.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: And um, I ended up, I went in so naive.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: Like I ended up like blowing out of the water what I thought I was gonna do.
- 11:10SPEAKER_05: I didn't know what a marathon felt like.
- 11:12SPEAKER_05: And um, when I finished, I I probably could have even gone faster.
- 11:16SPEAKER_05: Like, I just was smiling the that's one thing that my sister-in-law was there with my brother and my parents, and she was like, You were just smiling the whole time while you're running 26 miles.
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: That is insane.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: And I was like, Yeah, I was, wasn't I?
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: That was awesome.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: So um, and then I kind of got competitive, then I got the little competitive back with me, and I was like, Okay, so like I was pretty close to three hours.
- 11:42SPEAKER_05: Everybody keeps talking about this sub three.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: What does that mean?
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: And then I was like, all right, here we go.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Wait, so what'd you do?
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: I'm curious now because you mentioned that first one doing really good and fast.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Like, what'd you do on the first one?
- 11:56SPEAKER_05: Um, I did a 314 and um I stopped to pee at mile seven.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Um, I sprinted through the finish line straight to a porta potty.
- 12:06SPEAKER_05: That's where all that fueling and stuff was just not not on par, not on par at all.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Wait, did you just go past it and forget your medal?
- 12:16SPEAKER_05: Oh well, like the girl hugged me and she was like, and I was like, Where's the bathroom?
- 12:21SPEAKER_05: She's like, You did so good.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: Um, and I was like, Where's the bathroom?
- 12:25SPEAKER_05: And she was like, Oh, over there.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: I was like, please don't make me have to sit down right here.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: So you first coached the first one.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: At what point did you go, okay?
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: I'm fast, I can get faster.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Like, when was that moment?
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: Um, I think like after, like literally right after it, I was like, like, I the girl who won it, I think was I don't even know what she ran, but there was just like one girl or two girls in front of me, and it was like my college town.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: It was a it was like a decent smaller sized marathon.
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: And I was like, and like my family was like, I mean, we knew you'd be like up there, but like they were really encouraging.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: They were like, but like you weren't towards the front, we didn't have to wait that long.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I was like, okay, and so I think just like right after I was like, okay, maybe like yeah, I did the 5k and stuff in college, and like I like racing those still.
- 13:29SPEAKER_05: Um occasionally they're awful, they're awfully good.
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: Um, and they help the marathon, but like I was like, I love like I loved racing that, like I loved racing it, and so like the 5k is kind of like I loved it, I love it after.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's definitely hindsight, yeah, yeah.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Um, famous words you just dropped that every runner loves to hear.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: The family told you.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: I just gotta put that out there.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, we didn't even have to wait that long.
- 13:58unknown: Yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_05: That's why my uh my husband's like, you don't want to do another 5k or like maybe a half.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: He's like, You have to pick the longest one.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I said, but lucky for you, I'm gonna keep getting faster.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: We don't have to wait as long.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: And you can have my banana.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, we'd all love to hear that you finished your race.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I didn't have to wait that long.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: That's just gonna boost the ego right away.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I know.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: So you think I'm fast.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Walk me through the race where you did the 254.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Like, did you know or when did you know that day was gonna be different for you?
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: I knew like I knew I was breaking three, like, like well, like in my training block, like weeks before.
- 14:48SPEAKER_05: Like, I I'd never felt so strong.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: Like I said, I learned something every like um block I've done, and this one was like the block of my relationship with God and um a lot of fueling.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: I'm still building that fueling um aspect, but like each time it's gotten better, and so I think like that and just a lot of the little things were coming together, and like I mean, I think I only didn't hit one workout, and it was after my tune up half marathon race, like the week after.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: So I was like down about it.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: I made a whole reel, I was like, I just failed.
- 15:28SPEAKER_05: But it's like okay, you just because it's like I was so mad that I was like, I can't even hit my marathon pace, but I just ran 20 seconds faster for 13.1 miles.
- 15:38SPEAKER_05: Why can't I, you know?
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: And it's like, duh, you just did that hard.
- 15:43SPEAKER_05: So um I think it was just like way earlier in the block, I was like, I know I'm breaking three, and I don't know, I don't know how much by, but I was like, I'm so confident, like I know I can do that.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: Um, and I think honestly, I think I was fitter than I thought.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: Like, I think I if I would have paced, I very I pace very conservatively.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: I run best that way, and like almost too conservatively in the beginning.
- 16:11SPEAKER_05: That's why I need my I need my coach to be like, okay, you've got it, like you, it's okay.
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: This is a conservative enough, but it's like a safety net comfort.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:21SPEAKER_05: But um, with the like the sub three, the the 254, I think I like when I finished it, I was like, uh a little something left.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: Because the race I had done before my first attempt at sub three from the 314, I ran a 302, which is like a huge VR still.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: It was that close, but like when I finished, I was like, that that's what I had to give, you know.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: I was like, yes, I was that close, but I'm not mad about it.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't think I had no more, yeah.
- 16:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that day.
- 16:53SPEAKER_05: And I had fallen at mile 18, but honestly, I think that helped.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: I think I got a little adrenaline boost.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: I like I literally tripped over nothing.
- 17:01SPEAKER_05: Like, and I was like by myself, and I just like I popped back up and I was like, ugh, and kept going.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I I just I just knew it.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: It was very, it was a very cool uh training block to feel that strong and confident.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Tell me more about the conservative, like how conservative are we talking about?
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: How do you like to race?
- 17:23SPEAKER_05: So I think honestly, I went out and it's you know, it's hindsight.
- 17:28SPEAKER_05: Like I went out seven flat, I think, and like to run sub three, I think is like six fifty.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Um it wasn't that conservative, but then I ran a 254.
- 17:44SPEAKER_05: So then looking back at starting at 7 flat, it's like you could have started at 650, you know.
- 17:51SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah, just like that was like a lot.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: Uh like I would that's I don't need to start 20 to 30 seconds slower to to have my safety net.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I I like that though.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: It gives you time for your muscles to warm up.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: It also helps you not to go out too fast.
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: Like you're like, I'm trying to like I don't have that problem.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: Like I get that pep in my step and I want to, but I never like I never do because I'm like, I I want my I want my conservative start.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: I've learned that about myself in high school.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: Like I tried to go out with the varsity girls, my first meet.
- 18:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, oh, I was I was I was regretting it.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: When do you like kick up?
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Like it just happened naturally, or you go, okay, I'm in the middle of this.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: I think about like like uh each mile, like I probably started 750 and then I probably got to like 655, 650.
- 18:49SPEAKER_05: And then like I started to naturally pick up.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and so I started to look at my watch and scare myself then.
- 18:56SPEAKER_05: I was like six, I was like, oh, 645, 645, 640.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: So I'm in the 630s.
- 19:02SPEAKER_05: I was like, uh, so I think that's why I think I really I think I had a 252 in me.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: No, I I like that.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Uh funny you say that's the reason I asked selfishly.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: I just had a long run about a week ago and I just felt like naturally picking up.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: I started super slow and then by the end, I was like, wait a minute, I'm hitting half marathon pace over here.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it almost makes you think like it almost makes me think, should I warm up before a marathon?
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: You know, like I just I don't know.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: I just I feel my best that way, racing that way.
- 19:36SPEAKER_05: Even with the 5k, it's it's like very like little tiny seconds, but it makes a difference.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: When you saw you you close to the end, you saw that 254 on the clock.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Like, how'd you feel?
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: What what would that mean to you?
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: I just I don't I don't know.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: I kind of blacked out, but then when I crossed it, I like I'm not a super crier, like I didn't cry at my wedding my wedding or when I got proposed to, but when I crossed that finish line, I did like I cried a few little and then I was like, I did it.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: Like it was just like such a like I said I was gonna do it, I felt like I was gonna do it, I felt strong.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: The entire race, I I knew, I knew I had it, and it was just like, and then it happened, you know.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: It was like just this very uh reassurance in myself and in my confidence and in my strength in myself.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: And I like I said before in my relationship with God, like it was just like a full circle thing um to finish that and see the 254.
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: And I didn't, I was like, I was like, you know, in my head before starting, I was like, okay, 252 to 256, like what are we gonna do?
- 20:44SPEAKER_05: I I like I knew I don't know.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Um this box's a little different.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: This one's kind of scary.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Did you feel after like you know, in hindsight, that changed a little bit that race as a runner?
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: You just said I might have been able to do 252.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: Like that that was part of it, like finishing it and then that not having the same feeling that I did the race before, like being like that was all I could give, but being like, there was something more there, you know.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: Don't get me wrong.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: Like I sprinted to the end and I was like, Oh, the legs, and I remember coming up on the turn and just being like, This hurts, this hurts.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: I don't even know how fast I'm going.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: I just I gotta get there, I gotta get there.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: And someone was on a bike and cut me off, right?
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: Because it finished on a track, and that's why a lot of people were like, one of my clips that I have is me finishing on the track.
- 21:39SPEAKER_05: They're like, You ran a marathon on a track.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: I was like, No, no, but um, yeah, bike, someone on a bike like cut me off going, I'm like, I'm trying to do something here.
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, so okay.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Somewhat normal folks.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: You run 75.90 a week, like I mentioned.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: You go teach children all day.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: What's a day look like?
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I know you share all the time, but when you're waking up, when you eat in, what time you go to bed?
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Do you do doubles?
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: So, um, depending on the workout of the day, um, if it's a workout, I wake up a little bit earlier just because I'm gonna eat a little bit more and I want it to digest.
- 22:27SPEAKER_05: And so not too much earlier.
- 22:30SPEAKER_05: Um, like tomorrow I have a speed workout, but I'm also going to the treadmill because it is like 85 at 5 a.m.
- 22:37SPEAKER_05: this week and dew point 77.
- 22:39SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, I I don't even want to try the heat adjusted paces.
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: I want to go to the treadmill and I'll just rip the the hardcore Ross paces I need to hit.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: I think I need it too.
- 22:49SPEAKER_05: Um, but anyway, so if it's like that, I'll wake up earlier, usually like 5 a.m.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: But on those days, maybe like 4 45, 4 50.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: Um, and I I'm not one of those that does this.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: I pop right up.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: I it's it's a habit now, I think.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: And like I said, I love my routine.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: So like I'm like, even if I'm tired and I'm like, I really wish I could sleep, and I'm like, well, I can sleep on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: That's my rest day.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: Um, I mean, if I'm sick or anything like that, of course.
- 23:19SPEAKER_05: But so I do that, I um get dressed.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: Um half the time I have my hair already done, I sleep in it.
- 23:29SPEAKER_05: Um, or I do it and then I can just touch it up afterwards for work.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: But then I come down, I make my coffee, I let if you can hear her chewing, Bendy, my dog that's in my all my videos, I let her out while I'm making my coffee and my pre-run, um, get the shoes on, stretch a little bit, which lets the food digest for like usually it's like a banana and some dates and something that doesn't like if it doesn't like sit for a while, it's fine.
- 23:57SPEAKER_05: If it's a speed workout, then I kind of need to just sit a little bit.
- 24:01SPEAKER_05: And the drive to the gym helps that for the treadmill.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: But um, so I go and I do that.
- 24:06SPEAKER_05: I try to give myself like right now, my easy runs are 13 miles.
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: My coach does have them as like I can run 10 in the morning and three at the afternoon, but like, which is still super beneficial.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: But I know like if I could run all the 13 together, it's the most bang for your buck.
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: And also, like, I kind of prefer it.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: I kind of like I've taken my shower for the day, and like sometimes I like to do strength in the evening.
- 24:34SPEAKER_05: So I'm like, I don't, I don't want to do that.
- 24:37SPEAKER_05: Um, so I do the 13 in the morning.
- 24:40SPEAKER_05: I'll probably give myself if it's an easy run, I try to give almost two hours.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: I finish before that, but two hours if I like give myself that span of time to where I sometimes it creeps over, but to where I can get ready, I get ready really fast.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: So I'll take a body shower or wash my hair really fast, get dressed.
- 24:58SPEAKER_05: That takes like maybe 15, 20 minutes.
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: Um, and then I come down, I make my breakfast to go, get to the school, um, set up my classroom, eat my breakfast.
- 25:12SPEAKER_05: There's always some meeting or something.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: They want us to be in 50 places at once.
- 25:17SPEAKER_05: Um and yeah, and I've mastered the art of multitasking when it's my planning time.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: I am planning, I'm getting everybody's like, oh, as a first-year teacher, I just stay after school so much.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I'm not getting paid for that.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: And I won't, I won't be a good teacher if I do that.
- 25:34SPEAKER_05: Like, I will resent it and I will be tired, and it it's it's not good like that.
- 25:39SPEAKER_05: So I'm going to work when I need to work.
- 25:41SPEAKER_05: I'll put my phone down and just start working, crank out the plans, kind of visualize the lesson, make my copies, everything, and I try to have it ready for the next week by like the Thursday.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: So I'm Friday, I'm not stressing, and it's ready to go on Monday.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: And so after the school day, um, I'll eat lunch and then I during my planning and six period, I'll have another snack.
- 26:06SPEAKER_05: I'll get home, I'll have a snack, I'll go to the gym or do Pilates here.
- 26:11SPEAKER_05: I have that's your best friend.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: Buy a mat, buy some weights, look up YouTube.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: It's all free.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: It's amazing.
- 26:17SPEAKER_05: I was like, I love this world.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: Um and so I do that.
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: Um, sometimes I'll have to go to the chiropractor for um my injury I'm dealing with, and then um, yeah, and then I come or and then I start cooking dinner.
- 26:34SPEAKER_05: My husband gets off work and gets to the gym around 5:30.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: Sometimes, if he's lucky, I'll meet him there.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: That's very rare.
- 26:41SPEAKER_05: I'm like, usually I'm like, I just want to go and get it done.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: And then I'll make dinner while he's at the gym.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: So he comes home, we have dinner, um, then we get to chill and watch Netflix.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: Right now we're watching uh Reacher.
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: It's a pretty good show.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I've seen the first two seasons.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: I'm a fan of it.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:58SPEAKER_05: We just started the the new one.
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: Um, and uh then at seven o'clock, it's sweet treat o'clock, and I try to go to bed around eight, eight thirty, like get it, like go upstairs, brush my teeth, lay down.
- 27:13SPEAKER_05: So I hopefully my sleep has been on it, but this week, first two nights, I've not gotten my usual really good sleep.
- 27:21SPEAKER_05: So I'm like, what's going on?
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: But I'm chopping it up to the humidity in the morning.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: I'm not fully recovering.
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, so that that's kind of my routine.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: What's harder?
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: 22 miles in the marathon or last period of school day.
- 27:40SPEAKER_05: Oh it's it depends.
- 27:44SPEAKER_05: It depends.
- 27:46SPEAKER_05: Um the last period on a school day before a break and they just did their state testing is so much harder.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, I don't know.
- 28:02SPEAKER_05: Maybe because it really depends because they could go either way.
- 28:07SPEAKER_05: Depends on how that race is going, it depends on how that class is going.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Do your students understand how fast like you are at times?
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Do they know follow your page and stuff?
- 28:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, they're not supposed to, but um I mean it's public, I can't do anything about it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_05: Um, but um, oh yeah, they'll come.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: I found your YouTube, I found your Instagram, and they they don't really say much about the running.
- 28:36SPEAKER_05: I'm like, come on, guys.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: But like last year I had a student find my Strava, which was weird, and that video like blew up because like they're not, they weren't, it was before they found my Instagram, they found my Strava and they're like commenting on my runs.
- 28:51SPEAKER_05: And I was like, okay, let's go.
- 28:53SPEAKER_05: Um, but um, I don't think they like I mean when I think back to when I was in middle school, I didn't really even know what a marathon was.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:02SPEAKER_05: I was like, what?
- 29:04SPEAKER_05: And um half of them who do track, they're not it's middle school, so they're not in 5K's yet.
- 29:09SPEAKER_05: Some of them, some of them do because they like go do the 5Ks with their parents and they're all like that family running my dream.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I don't know.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: That's I try to tell them like, do y'all realize how fast your teacher is?
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: But um, and they're like, race me in a 400-meter dash.
- 29:29SPEAKER_05: I said, No, that's not what I meant.
- 29:31SPEAKER_05: It's not you could bring me, you could get me really good.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:35SPEAKER_05: I said, let's do a mile.
- 29:36SPEAKER_05: Let's do a mile.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Straight to the 400.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Oof, brutal.
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: I was like, y'all, y'all got me there.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: I'm not even gonna pretend like I could I could get y'all there.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: I've seen you say running makes you a better teacher.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: How?
- 29:51SPEAKER_05: So um just ask my students on the days that I've ran before school and the days that I haven't.
- 29:56SPEAKER_05: I'm just gonna um no, but it really does.
- 30:00SPEAKER_05: Like, I'm doing something for me.
- 30:02SPEAKER_05: I'm filling my cup up so then I can go and pour into others, really is the base basically.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: Um, it really does fill my cup up.
- 30:10SPEAKER_05: And that's what I like.
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: Like when people are like, I can't wake up.
- 30:15SPEAKER_05: I'm like, you don't have to wake up in the morning.
- 30:17SPEAKER_05: You can do it in the evening if that's what you prefer.
- 30:20SPEAKER_05: Do what fills your cup up.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: If waking up in the morning like is like the worst thing ever for you and it drains you and you don't feel better throughout the day, don't do that.
- 30:30SPEAKER_05: But um I'm like, but it it fires me up.
- 30:34SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 30:35SPEAKER_05: In the evening, I can't imagine going and doing the workout I have tomorrow.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: If I had to do that in the evening, I have to mm-mm.
- 30:41SPEAKER_05: Mm-mm.
- 30:42SPEAKER_05: I had a I raced a 5k in is it March or May on the track at 9 p.m.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: That doesn't sound fun.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: That'd go well.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: That don't sound fun at all.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: I'm asleep by now.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: What?
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: So wait, I'm curious now.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: What's what's the workout tomorrow?
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: What you got on deck for the treadmill?
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: Um, so he just redid my paces to not be heat adjusted.
- 31:10SPEAKER_05: So I think it's two miles easy, okay, four by two mile uh in 1230 to 1235.
- 31:19SPEAKER_05: So that's like 615 per mile for two miles in a segment for four reps, 400 meter jog in between.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: He gets me with the very little rest.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: That's that's something new this block.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: So I'm like, okay, this better, this better do something crazy on race day because like I'm barely getting any breathing time.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: Um, and like my long run this past weekend, my recovery was like afloat time.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: It wasn't full on like try as you please, and I'm like, but um then it's an uh 605 mile after that, after that set.
- 31:57SPEAKER_05: And then yeah, and then two miles easy.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: So okay.
- 32:03SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: That's a fun one.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: I see why a treadmill.
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: I've like the treadmill is like I saw a post recently about them saying, like, why's why is running harder harder on the treadmill?
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: I was like, what do you mean?
- 32:18SPEAKER_05: It's easier.
- 32:19SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: I mentally I get it, I guess, but like challenge you on that.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: Uh oh, you you don't agree?
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: No, I've gone back and forth.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: There's been periods where I'm training, I'm like, oh man, I'd so much prefer outside.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: And then sometimes I'm like the treadmill is awesome.
- 32:37SPEAKER_05: Well, and I do have to say, I'm like right now, it's this heat, you know, that could be part of it.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: Like, I definitely like would rather run outside, but like me being able to go into like the 67-degree gym and just like and like being able to set a pace and like just know all I have to do is hold on, like and I'm running the right pace, you know?
- 33:03SPEAKER_05: Like the whole like getting in my head, looking at my watch, like going under trees and it's saying I'm going like 15 seconds slower, and I'm like, I just sped up.
- 33:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, oh I I hate that.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: I hate that so much.
- 33:15SPEAKER_05: That's my biggest op.
- 33:17SPEAKER_05: I learned that term from my middle schoolers, op.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: The op.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Uh we're gonna call the in-between pace ramp ups in person the op.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that happens on race day, funny enough, but uh I do love that of the treadmill.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: You can just I'm locked in, I I just gotta stay here.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I don't do it a lot, but like I'm like, okay, I haven't been able to run like not heat adjusted times, and I'm like, I just I want to go fast.
- 33:51SPEAKER_05: Let me try let me try this on the treadmill.
- 33:53SPEAKER_05: Um, I I did one last week and I like was able to go really fast, and then but I obviously like my long run workout, I was gonna do that outside, and I think that also gave me confidence um in the heat too, because it that was that was hot too.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, Adriana, recently you posed something I really liked.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: It was about a workout, funny enough.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Um, you went into a workout, you were expecting it to be great, and unfortunately it wasn't a day, it sucked.
- 34:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: Um, what goes through your head like when you're jogging that and you're like, you know what, I'm gonna pull the plug.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: This ain't it today.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Um, because you know obviously you're thinking the whole build and race.
- 34:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: Um, it's very like I probably beat myself up that whole day and the next day until and I kept probably doing it until I had another good, good run, um, which I ended up having that Saturday on my long run.
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: But um I like was going and it was the first week of school.
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like and I was losing my voice.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: You have to build to build back up like your voice muscles, and like I'm on my feet all day.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Like all summer, I got to pretend I was like an elite athlete and just running was my job, you know?
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: Um, other than wedding planning, I had just gotten back from wedding, honeymoon, first week of school, all the things.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: Why what did I but I did all the things surrounding the run right?
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: But of course, you know, that's not that's why running is so hard, that's why we love it.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: Um, but I it was 800 meter repeats, and like I ran the first one and it felt so hard, and it was at the very like the slow end of my pace range, and I was like, okay, I'll try again.
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: And it did not go good.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: And then I did another one, and I was like, okay, it's not happening.
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: Um, forcing this workout is not gonna make me be able to show up better.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: It's going to tank my training instead of helping it.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, like I'm not gonna be able to do the paces, I'd rather just do the easy do the rest of the miles easy, and I talk to my coach and everything, and then put in everything I can, refocus for my run, uh, my workout, my long run workout.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: How do you um how can I put this?
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Become wise enough to make that adjustment.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: You know, a lot of people try to force it, but like in hindsight, there's more.
- 36:22SPEAKER_05: I I will usually would have forced it.
- 36:25SPEAKER_05: Um, I don't think I could have forced it.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: I think I would have just kept getting slower and slower.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: And I think honestly, like, I'm like, this, I just this workout's not helping me physically.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: It's not helping me mentally.
- 36:38SPEAKER_05: I'm not having fun.
- 36:41SPEAKER_05: Like, this isn't none of this is positive that's coming from this.
- 36:45SPEAKER_05: If I did, and then I did easy miles and I did, I was getting so upset, but then that's where like I kind of like reflected and I put on my worship music, talked to God, kind of like talked to myself and kind of like worked through what I was feeling and like had to just let it go and move on.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: Like it is what it is, let it go, move on.
- 37:07SPEAKER_05: Um, and then I was able to since that I was able to put my energy into preparing for the next one.
- 37:14SPEAKER_05: And another time on a on a long run that I was talking about, um, it was 17 easy.
- 37:22SPEAKER_05: It was 17 easy miles.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: And I don't know what I think I I was rush, rushed my whole routine was had that week kind of been like kind of down on myself, like looking at other people's times on social media and what everybody else was doing.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: Um, I didn't, I wasn't like really present with God and all this stuff.
- 37:47SPEAKER_05: And just everything that I usually do, I wasn't doing.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: I was doing it half.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: I was halfway doing it.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 37:53SPEAKER_05: Um, and I did that easy run.
- 37:56SPEAKER_05: And at mile nine, like, I don't usually have GI distress.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Like everybody's like, how do you drink that cup of coffee before you run?
- 38:03SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I got a stomach of steel, but I did not have a stomach of steel this day.
- 38:08SPEAKER_05: I don't know what I think it maybe it had to be the timing.
- 38:11SPEAKER_05: It was foods I usually eat, but like not like I've eaten them separate before run, but not all together.
- 38:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and so but I don't think it was, I think I just rushed it and I think I was just not not in it.
- 38:26SPEAKER_05: And I got to like mile nine and I was like, like, you know, like I didn't feel sick.
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: I just like my stomach was like, and I could not.
- 38:36SPEAKER_05: I think I hit the wall on a 17-mile easy run at mile nine.
- 38:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think I hit the wall, is what I I don't think I've ever experienced really hitting the wall.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: I think that was it because I was just listening to a podcast this morning about hitting the wall, and I was like, wait, I think that's what I did on that run.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: Um so I I came home, I showered, I um drank some fluid, I ate some dry cereal, took an hour, took my dog out for the last two miles.
- 39:05SPEAKER_05: I had stopped it at 14 because I ended up slowing down to like three minutes, like slower.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: Like it was bad.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: I was like, okay, something's wrong.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: Um, so and I just I was like, you know what?
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: I I feel good.
- 39:18SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go try to finish these uh two and a half miles.
- 39:21SPEAKER_05: Doesn't feel good, it's not working.
- 39:24SPEAKER_05: I'll come back, like whatever.
- 39:26SPEAKER_05: But I felt way back to normal.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: It was then 80 degrees, so it we were still going slow, but like I wasn't I wasn't sick, you know.
- 39:35SPEAKER_05: I felt totally, totally normal because like at first I was like, is this food poisoning?
- 39:39SPEAKER_05: Like, what is going on?
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: Um, like I was like, I don't do this, I don't do this.
- 39:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, and I felt completely normal the next two miles, and I had to do the same thing.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: I had to talk to myself, like it is okay.
- 39:53SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I'm gonna, I was making a real, I'm gonna share this.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna share this with everybody because this happens to everybody.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: And if I feel this way, somebody else is feeling this way.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: For sure, yeah.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: You mentioned this a few times, like you your relationship will like God and worshiping.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: You use a phrase often in your post that I don't hear often about, like um running is your form of worship, if you will.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Like, what does that mean to you?
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: So um, I feel like worship is uh giving, like just giving yourself to God and um connecting with him and just like like uh saying use me and just glorifying him and just giving him all the glory.
- 40:38SPEAKER_05: And um, whenever I do these workouts, especially the ones that I am scared of, like the 20 mile or like that I had a big workout, I'm like, I pray about it before, and I'm just like give me the strength to dwell on your strength.
- 40:55SPEAKER_05: Like, and that's what I tell myself before every run, like the cheesy Philippians 4 13.
- 41:01SPEAKER_05: I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength that every athlete uses.
- 41:03SPEAKER_05: It's so real that I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I can't do this, but I can do it with you.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: And I just kind of like I'm like, one thing, this was a little, this was getting deep.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: I was like, I need to feel something.
- 41:18SPEAKER_05: And I I was like, I was like, Jesus got crucified on the cross, and you can't take the pain of something you choose to do for like three minutes.
- 41:29SPEAKER_05: Uh I was like, I was doing some kind of manipulation of my mind.
- 41:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, it really is.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: It it's just giving like myself to him and the way people like worship and sing to him.
- 41:45SPEAKER_05: It is like you like use my body, use my body that you gave me and let's do this thing.
- 41:52SPEAKER_05: And then I I also pray about it like when I'm making the post about that.
- 41:57SPEAKER_05: Like, I'm like, how can I how can people see me through you without being like, wow, Jesus freak, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know, like because I don't want people that don't believe in God to be like, oh, I'm turning her off, you know?
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: Um, because that's not gonna get the word out.
- 42:15SPEAKER_05: And I actually had a YouTube comment that was like, I'm I'm atheist, but I like I'm like 100% like I've identified as atheist, but I admire how you do derive your strength from a higher power, and like they it it I saw a connection, you know, and I'm like, maybe it's not gonna be me, but maybe somebody's gonna reach that person, you know.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: Um, so that that was a really cool comment to get.
- 42:42SPEAKER_05: And it was also cool that like I could respect how they felt, and they also could respect my religion, but like, and like see how powerful it is to me, and then like I can also respect their their viewpoint, and we could have a conversation about it instead of people like just attacking each other for not believing the same thing, you know.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and really kind of them to want to leave a note about it too, like, hey, this makes some kind of impression on me, you know.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: I really like I thought that was so amazing.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Talking about amazing, you often talk about like hey, running needs to enhance your life, not consume it.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: Um, how do you know when you cross that line?
- 43:21SPEAKER_05: Um, so funny enough, this happened right after that 254.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm on a high.
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: I'm like, what are we doing next?
- 43:29SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I've built all this um fitness up.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: What about let's go after that half PR?
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and so there's a half in February, and I did, I took, I always still like took my time off.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: Um, I did a couple 5Ks um after I took time off, and then I kind of like got back into like doing some turnover workouts with the 5K and just kind of was like kind of riding the marathon fitness because I love racing a 5K after a marathon build.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Like I don't know.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: It's a science experiment I've been doing since I've done a done a marathon.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: Every time I get faster in the 5K, I mean it makes sense, but like I'm like, okay, I can get a marathon PR and then I can go get a 5K PR right after it.
- 44:15SPEAKER_05: But um it's happened three times now, so we'll try it again.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: But um I started to like put like a lot of like I lost the all the things I'm talking about, like the connection with God, the community.
- 44:31SPEAKER_05: Um I was waking up and like going on my runs and like almost crying, like I don't want to do this because I was just jumping right back in to like I ramped right back up to 60 miles.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Um I I took the time off, I did it right, but it like mentally it just it wasn't it wasn't there.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: And we had that extreme, like insane cold winter in Florida, like I mean in the negatives in Florida, which is crazy.
- 45:02SPEAKER_05: And one of those days was on the half, and like I looked at you and I like was talking to my husband, and I was like, I think I I said, I think I'm gonna switch to the 5k because they had a 5k the day the day right before.
- 45:16SPEAKER_05: So it was still cold, it was like 40s, but not negatives with a wind chill.
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I'm gonna go do the 5k, and I did the 5k.
- 45:25SPEAKER_05: I had done a 5k right after and got like a 30-second PR of the marathon in January, and then in February I tried to do this 5k and I PR'd by one second, but it's a PR.
- 45:38SPEAKER_05: Um, but um so like after that, I really was like, I need to chill, or I'm gonna lose.
- 45:46SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna lose this.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna lose this amazing thing I built.
- 45:49SPEAKER_05: So I took like three or four weeks of like just like I would go for like five mile jogs, four mile jogs, walks, just walks some days, and strength and like the Pilates videos I was telling you about, and just long walks and like really just slowing down.
- 46:07SPEAKER_05: And um, then I saw that uh my coach, she had to at the time had to take um time off because she was having a baby and everything.
- 46:18SPEAKER_05: And so I was like, Do I get a new coach?
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: Like, what am I doing?
- 46:21SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm signed up for Chicago, and Jeff Cunningham posted his thing, and I'm like, oh, he's the name.
- 46:28SPEAKER_05: Like, he's awesome.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: And also he reminded me a lot of my high school coach.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: So I was like, I'm just gonna like throw my my name into the sign up thing and see.
- 46:38SPEAKER_05: My friend was coached by him, and she said she was like, I like he's awesome.
- 46:42SPEAKER_05: I don't know how much spots he has open.
- 46:43SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't know, like if you get it, like we definitely work with him.
- 46:46SPEAKER_05: Like, I just don't want to like get your hopes up.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: And he like reached out and I was like, I guess this is a sign.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: Let's let's try this again.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: And we just did this really like build before the build, like with the 5k and just some fast work, and like he he's like super smart, and I'm learning from him every day and um science-based, which as a science teacher I've loved.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: Um, and it kind of like I got back, okay.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: I was like, okay, I'm back.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: I'm back.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: I'm loving this again.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: Um, so I think sometimes we just like once you start feeling like it's not making you a better you, and it's not it's making you unhappy, it's not adding anything.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: That doesn't mean you have to quit and be like, okay, I'm done.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: Like just slow down, take a pause and step back, which is really hard in this world and in this society.
- 47:35SPEAKER_04: But like, I mean, that was three weeks, and I was like, okay, yeah.
- 47:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 47:43SPEAKER_05: So it's it, it really like, and it probably it could have been longer.
- 47:48SPEAKER_05: Like after college, when I experienced that, and I took I took like six months, seven months, like, I mean, I ran like for fun there and here and there to stay in shape, went to the gym and stuff, but I wasn't competing or even thinking about marathons or anything like that.
- 48:05SPEAKER_05: And then I came back so much stronger, like wanting to do these marathons and do crazy stuff I never did.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: I I never thought I could run the times that I'm running running now.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: So well, on that, you just talked about Chicago.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: Let's talk Chicago.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: What are you trying to do at Chicago?
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: So um, I am going for a sub 250 and as far under that as can happen.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Um my coach did say like that my 20-mile workout actually like went way better than he thought it was going to, and like so he was spitballing some pacing ideas.
- 48:51SPEAKER_05: Um, so probably still pacing like around that and like just really listening to my body on race day.
- 48:57SPEAKER_05: And who knows, we got six weeks.
- 48:59SPEAKER_05: Yep, that taper works magic.
- 49:01SPEAKER_05: Um, the carbload works magic.
- 49:04SPEAKER_05: So um um good weather, you know, especially after running where we're running, like woo.
- 49:12SPEAKER_05: Um, so sub 250 is the goal, and hopefully all the stars align, you know.
- 49:21SPEAKER_05: We can only be so lucky.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: It was uh great last year, I think, right?
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: If I recall the weather, I don't remember the weather last year.
- 49:29SPEAKER_05: I think it was like in Chicago.
- 49:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think it was because I actually ran a half here where I'm from on the day of Chicago, like as a tune-up race, and it was like 65, 60s here, maybe like 55 at the start in Florida.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: And I remember people, I think they said it like kind of warmed up, but I mean I don't think it warmed up that.
- 49:51SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of people said it like a lot of people have really great days.
- 49:55SPEAKER_00: Six weeks out.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: What has to happen now in these last six weeks to make sure, hey, we under Sub 250.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: So it's so funny you said that because I was actually making a post about what am I doing six weeks before Chicago, like right before this.
- 50:11SPEAKER_05: Um, but like it's really just dialing in the little things at this point that you've kind of already done, um, and just like really focusing on it.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: Um, protecting that long run, like getting that done, um doing the extra little bits of recovery, the stretching, um, trying my best.
- 50:35SPEAKER_05: You can only try so hard not to get sick.
- 50:37SPEAKER_05: Um, trying to keep my um, I have like a bulging disc that's pushing on my sciatic nerve that I'm dealing with.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: So like I'm not, there's no bone injury or anything like that, but it's causing so much discomfort.
- 50:52SPEAKER_05: So trying to keep that in check.
- 50:54SPEAKER_05: Um, it was great news to hear that running's not like I'm not breaking down, you know.
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: Um, it's just like keeping it uninflamed.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: So going to the chiropractor regularly regularly for that.
- 51:07SPEAKER_05: Um really just kind of going all in and like being like, okay, I want to, I've been training like an athlete.
- 51:15SPEAKER_05: I want to have the best day dialing in on these workout days, getting the carbs in, fueling, timing, all of that, practicing the fueling in the long run that I want to use on race day.
- 51:27SPEAKER_05: Um, the same things.
- 51:29SPEAKER_05: I just ordered my carbon plate shoes.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: Um, test those out one run.
- 51:36SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, get to start doing the fun things like picking out outfits, um, making reservation for dinner the night before, you know, things like that, and just kind of doing doing the things that you can, like doing what you can control and just what you've been doing or should have been doing, and just like dialing it in.
- 51:59SPEAKER_05: Um, this weekend I'm traveling and I'm gonna make like a YouTube video on it, but I'm traveling home for Labor Day, and I haven't gotten to go home to the lake because we had we usually go in the summer and we had the wedding and everything.
- 52:11SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I really want to enjoy that.
- 52:14SPEAKER_05: So I'm moving my long run to Friday morning.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: Um, I took off Friday, so I had to go home.
- 52:21SPEAKER_05: Um uh teachers, it was okay to take off.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: You're not doing something wrong, you show up better.
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: Um, family is important, so like moving things around um to still get all that training.
- 52:33SPEAKER_05: It worked out.
- 52:34SPEAKER_05: I just have 17 easy this weekend since I had the big 20 miler.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: So it worked out perfect, and that's gonna fill my cup up, and that'll be my last like big traveling, and then the rest of the weekends, like we're here.
- 52:47SPEAKER_05: It's kind of just mundane um until the race.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, we at Chicago, you cross the finish line.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: We're gonna forget about the time for a second.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: Yes, what is a successful weekend look like for you?
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: Um, I guess like one thing is like flights and stuff going on good.
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: All my like marathons that I've like raced, like I ran Boston, but I didn't race it.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: So like I was like super chill about like being on my feet and things like that.
- 53:18SPEAKER_05: Like I was just there for the vibes.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: Um but um you know, the hoping that all the flying goes well, um carving up every every marathon.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: I think it's just I'm eating way more carbs than my body's used to the night before and and a mix of nerves.
- 53:38SPEAKER_05: The night before I get terrible cramps, terrible cramps.
- 53:43SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's definitely digestion TMI.
- 53:46SPEAKER_05: But um so like just making sure I have the medicine that helps with that.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Because like when I take the medicine, I'm fine.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: But like it has happened before every not before Boston because it was super chill, yeah.
- 53:59SPEAKER_05: But like I think it's like just the nerves, and like I'm I cardloaded for Boston, but not like dialed in like I would for racing, um, which I should though.
- 54:09SPEAKER_05: But um yeah, so all of that, um, getting in Friday, going and getting um some kind of carby meal, getting to the hotel, sleeping in, hopefully hosting a shake out.
- 54:24SPEAKER_05: Stay tuned with someone else, um, one of my Instagram friends, um, there.
- 54:30SPEAKER_05: That would be super fun the next day to like meet people and get like good vibes, maybe get some bagels or something after um the energy.
- 54:40SPEAKER_05: Then probably going to the expo, just very briefly trying to just kind of enjoy it and soak it in, but stay off the feet.
- 54:49SPEAKER_05: Um maybe go back to the hotel, watch some, watch a movie or something, and then then get up to go eat again.
- 54:58SPEAKER_05: Um and I always have a steak and a baked potato.
- 55:03SPEAKER_05: That is my staple before runs or before races.
- 55:06SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 55:07SPEAKER_05: So I there's a place I already found it two minutes from our hotel.
- 55:12SPEAKER_05: And then we save my classic after the race, Mexican, uh, maybe a margarita or two.
- 55:20SPEAKER_05: Um, and then at night we're gonna get the deep dish pizza because we have to.
- 55:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I can't do that before.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then just pizza for sure.
- 55:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then just um just really enjoying it, but also like like getting in the zone and um relaxing and being like, this is it, like I've done all I can.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: Let's go have a day tomorrow, let's go have fun.
- 55:48SPEAKER_05: Um, regardless, I just want to like, I want to run the race strong.
- 55:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:52SPEAKER_05: Like, like even if like like I did in the 302.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: I once I got to a certain point, I knew it was like on the line that whole time, that race.
- 56:01SPEAKER_05: Um, but then when I got to a certain point, like I was like, I still want to just finish strong.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: And I did, and I was proud of it and still had joy about it and everything.
- 56:10SPEAKER_05: So that that's really just what I want.
- 56:12SPEAKER_05: And the weather to be nice.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: Gotta mention the weather, yes.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: Put that out there, Binzola.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:22SPEAKER_00: Andrew, six weeks ago.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: I'm excited for you.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: Uh locking this in.
- 56:28SPEAKER_00: Um, we'll see what what happens.
- 56:30SPEAKER_00: But one, I want to thank you for hopping on the podcast and sharing everything you got going on.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: Love the joy and energy behind it.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: Um, thanks for coming on the podcast.
- 56:39SPEAKER_05: No, thank you so much for having me.
- 56:41SPEAKER_05: This was so fun.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: Time flies when you're just talking about everything you love.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: This has been the People Run Podcast.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: Until next time.
