A 29-year-old Maryland man, Monroe Merrell, just pleaded guilty to his role in a brutal 2020 crime spree that killed three people — starting with a $40 drug debt dispute and spiraling into a violent cover-up that included burning a body in West Virginia woods and dumping two others in the Potomac River. The case, now wrapped up with six guilty pleas including three Marylanders and two West Virginians, was a multi-state nightmare that forced federal intervention after local witnesses were also murdered.
