- 0:02Speaker 1: The murder trial for Lindsay Clancy left the courtroom today.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Instead of sitting and listening to testimony, the jury visited
- 0:09Speaker 1: the scene of the crime.
- 0:10Speaker 2: It isn't common, but it isn't rare to see a
- 0:12Speaker 2: jury go to a scene in order to see and
- 0:15Speaker 2: understand what the attorneys are arguing in terms of their case.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Clancy stands accused of the unthinkable, the first degree murders
- 0:24Speaker 1: of her three young children back in twenty twenty three.
- 0:27Speaker 2: The defendant has been charged in three counts of murder.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The former labor and delivery neurs has pleaded not guilty,
- 0:34Speaker 1: her defense admitting that Clancy did kill her children, but
- 0:38Speaker 1: they argue she is not to blame because she suffered
- 0:41Speaker 1: from a rare medical condition postpartum psychosis.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Jurse are brought to the former Clancy home today in
- 0:47Speaker 2: order to get a better understanding of what it means
- 0:49Speaker 2: for Lindsay Clancy to have been in the basement, strangle
- 0:52Speaker 2: her children, come upstairs, cut herself, and then attempt to
- 0:56Speaker 2: jump out of the second floor window. All of this
- 0:58Speaker 2: will help the jury understand the arguments being made in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the case.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The juries were escorted by police traveling in a bus
- 1:04Speaker 1: dark windows along the same journey Clancy's now ex husband
- 1:08Speaker 1: took that tragic day before ending in the couple's former
- 1:12Speaker 1: home in Duxbury, mass Cameras cannot show them on site,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but the trip took a couple of hours. The visit
- 1:21Speaker 1: to the home comes after Patrick Clancy wrapped up his
- 1:24Speaker 1: emotional testimony earlier in the week.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I said what happened? And what was her response?
- 1:30Speaker 2: She said, I tried to kill myself.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Did you ask her anything else? I said, where are
- 1:38Speaker 3: the kids? And what was her response? She said, they're
- 1:41Speaker 3: in the basement.
- 1:46Speaker 1: The prosecution maintains the mother of three planned the depths
- 1:50Speaker 1: of her kids, sending Patrick out of the house to
- 1:52Speaker 1: pick up dinner and run some errands so he couldn't interfere,
- 1:56Speaker 1: a trip that left her alone with the kids for
- 1:59Speaker 1: fifty four minutes. Prosecutors say Patrick even called to check in,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and Lindsay did not indicate anything was wrong. But the
- 2:06Speaker 1: defense says this is a case of severe mental illness
- 2:10Speaker 1: left untreated and potentially over medicated.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Did anyone ever tell you not to leave your kids
- 2:16Speaker 3: alone with Lindsay? In January of twenty twenty twenty three,
- 2:24Speaker 3: did Lindsey ever tell you that she wanted to harm
- 2:27Speaker 3: your children? Did she ever tell you she was going
- 2:33Speaker 3: to kill your children?
- 2:35Speaker 1: Patrick is a witness for both the prosecution and the defense.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's extremely rare to have one witness testify for both
- 2:42Speaker 2: the prosecution and the defense. The prosecution focus on what
- 2:45Speaker 2: he knew about the symptoms and red flags of Lindsay
- 2:49Speaker 2: Clancy leading up to the killing of his three children.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Patrick Clancy helped the defense by humanizing his ex wife
- 2:55Speaker 2: to testify in a way that is positive of the defendant.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Patrick testified in a phone called with Lindsay about a
- 3:01Speaker 1: week after the incident, she mentioned hearing a voice.
- 3:04Speaker 3: She said she heard a man's voice telling her that
- 3:07Speaker 3: if she didn't do it now, should lose her chance,
- 3:12Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Another emotional moment in court this week when prosecutors showed
- 3:19Speaker 1: the jury of the pajamas that children were wearing when
- 3:21Speaker 1: they were killed and the elastic bands used to strangle them.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Prosecutors say Clancy then use the knife to cut her
- 3:28Speaker 1: wrist and neck and then threw herself out of the
- 3:30Speaker 1: second floor window. Her injuries left her partially paralyzed. Patrick
- 3:36Speaker 1: Clancy eventually divorced his wife in remarry, but months after
- 3:39Speaker 1: the incident, he shocked many when he released a statement
- 3:43Speaker 1: asking family, friends in the public to forgive Lindsey. Lindsey
- 3:48Speaker 1: Clancy alleges that she had asked for help repeatedly. In
- 3:51Speaker 1: a separate civil malpractice lawsuit, she alleges her postpartum depression
- 3:55Speaker 1: was improperly treated by multiple medical providers, citing she went
- 4:00Speaker 1: to emergency rooms, she called crisis hotlines, She admitted herself
- 4:04Speaker 1: to hospitals. She took the medications prescribed to her. She
- 4:07Speaker 1: communicated her worsting symptoms to providers. She told them the
- 4:11Speaker 1: medications were making her worse, and still the medical system
- 4:15Speaker 1: failed her completely.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Postpartum psychosis is very, very uncommon. It is a very
- 4:21Speaker 4: rare condition. It happens in about one to two out
- 4:24Speaker 4: of one thousand berths. The person who's experiencing it may
- 4:28Speaker 4: not be able to identify that something's wrong because post
- 4:31Speaker 4: part of psychosis is really a departure from reality.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Next week, the jury will be back in the courtroom.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It's unclear whether Lindsay Clancy will take the stand in
- 4:40Speaker 1: her own defense. The trial is expected to last six
- 4:44Speaker 1: to eight weeks. If you are a loved one, are
- 4:48Speaker 1: struggling with thoughts of self harm or other mental health
- 4:50Speaker 1: CRISS reach out to the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
- 4:54Speaker 1: by dialing or texting nine eight eight will of course
- 4:58Speaker 1: continue to follow this case as it cresses
