- 0:12SPEAKER_02: What's up guys?
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to another episode of Kids in a Calling Podcast, where none of us are kids, but we all have a calling.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: And that's the point, people to Jesus.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: Obviously, Audrey is not your host today.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: We lost her.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: But only for the week.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Um, she's enjoying vacation right now.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: She'll be back next week.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Ramsay was really worried.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: She was stressing.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I got scared for a second there.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Uh so anyway, I'll be your host for today.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Hudson Walton.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: If you don't know me, you should buy now.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Buy now.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: To my right, I'm joined by Ramsay Pavlou.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Hey guys.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: And then across from us is Luke Gibson.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Hey.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: It's only the three of us today, so I would understand if this is the lowest rated episode of the season.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: So we'll do what we can, guys.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: We'll do what we can.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: That's funny.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: But I have a question for the three of us.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: We can we can talk a bit more since it's only the three of us.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: What is your most embarrassing church moment or story?
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Um, doesn't even have to be like in a service or anything, just uh something embarrassing that happened in a church.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: There's quite a few to start.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Bro has multiple words going through them.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Wait, the most embarrassing.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Wait, this is kind of hard.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: As like myself right now, the most embarrassing would probably just be like messing up uh behind like the media computer.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Like I remember this one time a preacher called for a picture and I was high-key distracted, and I did not hear him.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And he apparently my mom told me he called for it like three times and then just gave up at the end.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, and so I've never done that again, but that one was really bad, like afterhand embarrassment.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: It happens.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have one that I think can slightly top that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: I was run time, I was one time running sound for a funeral here at our church, and um the computer that we run sound through had shut down.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: But the iPad that we play music on, it doesn't go through the computer.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: So I thought everything was fine because music was coming through fine.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, just having the the quiet uh funeral playlist going.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Well the the service starts, and one of the pastors here, he gets up to read the obituary and just no audio through the mic, no single.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: That is actually so tragic.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Everyone in the crowd immediately turned and looked at me.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: That that's my most embarrassing moment by far.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: That is actually so tragic.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: I don't think mine could top that, but I feel like mine was bad, at least for me.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: In a youth service one time, it was the leader's time to solo a song.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: And I was, I guess I was newer singing, and I just started soloing with her.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Like I thought it was like every time for everybody to come in and sing.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: No, and I ended up seeing the entire solo.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: I didn't stop.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: Bro was gonna praise no awareness, can't hold loop back no day.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: I just imagine, bro, worshiping his heart out, and the worship leader's just like everybody's just looking at me.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: Like all the singers are like, Do we come in?
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: Like, no, tragic.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: But all right, um, I don't know.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I think yours may top it.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: Messing up there in a funeral.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Nah.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Nah, he says youth service, though?
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Worshiping the Lord out of turn at youth service.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: I think that might be worse.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Worshiping out a turn.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: You can never worship out a turn, guys.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Never, never unless you're on the stage and it's not your solo.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Unless you're Luke Gibson.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Actually, it only applies to Luke Gibson.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Okay, I think we need to move on to the message now.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: I think Luke has a point.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: This is a very seamless segue.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: All right, but let's get to the message.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Um, Pastor Jared, he continued his God can series, the series that we do every year.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: You've heard it, you've heard Audrey say it the past episode.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: So without any further ado, let's get right into it.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Good, good transitions.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: I'm killing it.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: New host alert.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know if you picked that up, Ramsey, but we're getting into the message.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: So, any thoughts?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: So, ironically enough, he didn't start off with a story this time.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Dude, that is the first thing I noticed.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: This might be the first time ever.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Ever he's done it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was crazy.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: I don't I literally don't I can't remember another time Pastor Jared has not started with some type of like a hook or story.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: This time he just started talking about a Bible verse.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: It was Ephesians 3.20.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Someone did not listen to the message.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: It's Ephesians 3.20 is he he reiterates he reiterates it every week.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: He said it's about it being exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think, looking to those things, believing for those things.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: And he just went on this week talking more about what we can imagine.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: He built our faith.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: He talked about building our faith last week, and he showed this week that even if we build our faith very, very high, if we don't have like a set expectancy for what is to come or what the desired outcome is, we're never going to see anything.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: We can't pray those things if we don't know what they are.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: It was really um, like you said, it was really just centered on faith again.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: And I really like the the distinction.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, we talked about faith last week.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Now like that's faith.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: But this was like another uh I don't want to use the word element, maybe another part of faith, kinda.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Like he highlighted that there's a difference between believing God can, which I feel like at this point most of us do.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Um, especially if you've been going to church your whole life, you probably do.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Um and then the distinction between believing God can and imagining what God can do.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Those are different things.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if I ever really conceptualized it that way.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Like, sure I know that God can, but do I actually use that faith and that belief to imagine God doing crazy things for me or in my church or my family?
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: It's a uh really important distinction, I feel.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sometimes we can only look at the things that we see are impossible, but like normal, normally impossible, like a miracle or a healing in somebody's body, but we don't see it as, oh, he could touch my situation, even though it may not be I need healing or I need uh a breakthrough, you know, with my job.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: It could be something very specific to me or something that, you know, I haven't heard anybody have a testimony of this before, but we can have the faith and imagine, oh, well, he can touch my situation if he's healed somebody from sickness or disease or even cancer, you know?
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that was one of the the issues that sometimes that issue that you're just describing, that we can kind of limit our imagination to what we've experienced.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: So sure someone else has gotten a healing, but I haven't experienced a healing like that.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: So it may not be conscious, but I can start to kind of limit my faith in what God can do based on what I've experienced.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Well, the way he said it in the message is that my imagination is kind of lacking.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: It kind of reminds me of a week or two ago when he was saying that um you can go back and you can you can take the things that you know and you can use them more than what you know God can do.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Or you can you can know too much about the situation.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: This is what it really was.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: You can know too much about the situation for your own good for it to impact you in a good way or to believe that God can do more than what you know and you've seen and you experienced Yeah.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Um I really like when he talked about um in Genesis, it kind of goes along with that.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: He talked about Sarah a bit, and Sarah, obviously, if you haven't heard the story, old lady.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Um she and Abraham they didn't have a son.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: God told them that they would have a son, and so her experience, what she believed was possible, she kind of let that limit her imagination.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: She literally laughed at one point and was like, This can't happen.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Um, when God had so much in store, and just highlighting in the Bible, we do that so often.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: If y'all don't, I definitely do.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I definitely limit my prayer sometimes based on what's going on around me or what I've experienced.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: So I definitely really needed this message because it is a it's a trap we can fall in.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just kind of how we're wired in a way.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: It's just a natural human thing to do.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: We try to we try to fit things into what we know, but God is so much more than that.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: It says that his ways are higher than our ways.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: So we kind of have to realize that God operates on a whole nother level.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Literally anything we can imagine, that's just like nothing for him.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: He can do it all.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: So we have to we have to bridge that gap.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: That's kind of what the message is really calling for.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he um he used an example.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: He did take it, he did use a story, but it wasn't at the beginning.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: But his story is about his friend Matt Whitehead, and about how he has the palette of a nine-year-old.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: And so, like, when they first became friends and like their their work, what's it called?
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Partnership, relationship?
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: What do you work?
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: What's the word for like employees that work together?
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Coworkers, co-workers, yeah.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Like he works with my dad for synchromatic, anyways.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: When they first went go eat, they went to a Mexican restaurant and they both really like Mexican.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: But my dad, if you don't know him, he loves like the biggest thing on the menu.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Like he wants the fajitas with all the things on top, all the salsa, all the hot sauce, all the things.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: But Matt, he orders what was it, like a crunchy taco with just meat and cheese?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Yes, like literally nothing bare bones, yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Just the basics, the the simplest thing he finds.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: And then what was his like little spruce, maybe like or does he not spruce it up?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Like he didn't even use sour cream or nothing.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: I think he got like a new type of cheese.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, maybe something like that.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: That was the spice.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: That was what he offered.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: It was just fajitas that was different.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: It was like a fajita with like nothing on it.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Anyways, he discovered that he just orders the same thing every single time because he doesn't want to get anything that he doesn't know.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: He doesn't want to get anything that he won't like.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So he just gets the same thing over and over again, like the grape snow cone.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: If y'all didn't listen to it, his favorite snow cone flavor is grape.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And he gets it every time.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: He tried orange once, he didn't like it, but he just gets grape.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And tying into what Hudson had said is there's so much more offered than just the most simple thing on each menu.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: We've we've made this menu for ourselves that is so small and has only so many options that we just keep going back to those options every time.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: But God's offering such a bigger menu with so many more options, with so many more capabilities that we can get, and we tend to um like make a spiritual menu almost.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: We're like, we're we're fine with just going to church every Sunday and every Wednesday and just kind of getting that little like piece of what God offers us.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Because that's all we that's all we've done.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Um in Matt's case, he's only gotten those snow cones since he was a kid, and that's all right for snow cones, but when it comes to our walk with God, we can't have that same mentality where we just keep doing the same thing over and over from when we started our walk with God, because that's not how it works.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Like you just said, there is so much more than we can ever imagine.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Um, in every single avenue of God, your prayer life, your the fruits of the spirit, you walking in your ministry, walking in your calling.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: There's so many avenues, and you can never get you can never get caught up like that.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you'll never grow.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: You'll limit yourself.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: You'll like uh your palate, like Matthew's palette, that's that's the whole joke.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: He said that his palette's like a nine-year-old.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: We can get that same palette and force it on ourselves subconsciously by not allowing ourselves to really, you know, use our imagination, like have faith in what God can do.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Um this is kind of crazy because you guys weren't there, but I recently had a a prayer group uh because we just started our small group semester here at Point Church, and it was going over prayer and how there's so many different uh parts and levels of prayer, like intercession, um, just like there's so many different um elements of prayer.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but our most common as and this is all of us, it's just what we do.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Our most common place that we stay in prayer is petitions, and that's just you, God, I need this.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: God, please help me with this.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: If we're honest, that's where most of our prayer is.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: And then still, yeah, we pray, we worship, we praise him, we thank him.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: But most of us, if if we don't ever move on from that, and that's all we do, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: You're still praying, that's good, but there is so much more out there, there's so many deeper levels, um, just so many different levels that if you keep the same palette and your faith and your prayer life and and any avenue in your walk with God, it's it's gonna be a massive limiter on you.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you'll never grow into what God has planned for you.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: And the whole point of this also was how he he compared his order of nectar to it.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: And well, Matt didn't even know it existed, and that's the exact thing with imagination.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: We're thinking up things that we don't even think can exist or are not even a thing.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: So if we don't even know that it's a possibility or even an option, we're not imagining enough, we're not pushing enough for what God can do and what he obviously is able to do.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Um one of the things though is like with the limiting to our our palette or like the menu or whatever it is for you, is that you may find yourself too scared to go and investigate out into what the world or what God can do within the world you're in, and like learning more about whatever you're learning about um and about what God can do.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: And you may just limit yourself because you're just too scared, or maybe maybe you're not too scared, but you just don't want to inconvenience yourself with that.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe you get stuck in the comfort of it all, yeah, and you don't even want to learn about it.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you put the age limit on your palate.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Like you say, oh, I'm not the pastor, I'm not a minister, I'm not anybody here, I'm just a nine or ten, maybe, maybe twelve-year-old palate.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: That's pretty good.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: You know, I can I can get maybe the rainbow flavor now.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: But um I mean, we we see it as, oh, I can't grow anymore because I'm not in a certain position, or I'm not doing this, or I'm not called to a certain thing.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: It doesn't matter.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: We just kind of open up, yeah, and expand.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I want to talk about that a bit more because I I do feel like that's a pretty big problem, especially for um younger, um, younger people, yeah, youth, um, even younger.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: You can have that same mentality that you were just talking about, Luke, where you could be like, I'm just a junior high student, I'm only in seventh grade.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I can't do something like that.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: I can't operate at that level.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: That's for that's for higher, that's for people that have spent 20 years in the church.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: That's for a pastor.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Um, but you forget that David was like 11 fighting lions to protect his sheep with the presence of God, with God helping him.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: So that's right.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: That's kind of crazy.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: That's a 12-year-old.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: And you can do that too.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: There's no age limit.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: You just have to have faith and keep following.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Um, there's been people that have preached people like hundreds of people through to the Holy Ghost at like 14.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: So you can do it too.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: There's there's no age limit, like Luke was saying, you can't limit your imagination because you think there's some like arbitrary age limit or materness limit.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: You just gotta have faith.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And I like what you said is when you look at somebody and you're like, I can't do that.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: They have 20 years of experience.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: How do you think they got the 20 years of experience?
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: They had to start someplace.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you could have 20 years of experience by the time you're 30 if you start at 10, and then people be like, Whoa, they're so good, I can't do that.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: But all you have to do is just start, and you definitely won't start at their level, but you'll start and you'll grow to that level.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I'm not just gonna wake up one day when I'm 35 and then go on a month-long fast and like seed visions and speak in tongues for a day straight.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not just gonna happen.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: I would have to slowly build my walk with God up to that.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: You have to uh yeah, I like that.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: That you have to start something.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: But yeah, so don't limit your imagination.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: I feel like, I mean, core of the message, you bring it down to it, it's have faith, but you can't limit your faith based on your own understanding.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: You gotta have imagination.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: And um, I really like kind of near the end how he started highlighting the fact that we can actually start adopting some of God's mindset the closer we get to him.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And that that will help you really like bridge the gap because we can't understand God's thoughts, but God gives us his spirit, so in a way we can start to understand his thoughts for us and it can grow our faith.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: And he uses um 1 Corinthians 2, 10 through 12.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: But it was to us that God revealed these things by his spirit, for his spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit, and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own spirit.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: And we have received God's spirit, not the world's spirit, so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: So the closer you get to God, the more freedom you give his spirit to work in you, the closer you get to him, you'll start understanding God's thoughts for you.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: You'll start, your faith will grow from that.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: So that's just if you wanted something applicable and not just us talking about have greater faith, that's how.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Get closer to God.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: I feel like that's the answer for a lot of things.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: So we need to say it every time.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: The closer you get, the more liberty his spirit has in you, the greater your faith will be.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: The broader your imagination will be because you'll start adopting that imagination from God, and that's pretty cool.
- 18:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: It's like the closer, the closer you get with him, the more you grow his relationship with him, the more you just grow in literally every other aspect of life.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Because it all like I feel like is almost common sense, but it all boils down to like your relationship with God.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: And so if you're like what you just said, if you grow with him, you're growing not just with him, but with all aspects of life, because he'll bless that that um discipline today.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we really don't even need a podcast anymore.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Just grow closer to God.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: That'll answer all your questions.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: He'll actually just answer all your problems.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but there was um one more thing I wanted to talk about.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: Um I really like when he brought up the the kind of concept of what if prayer isn't always about what I want to say.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sometimes it's about just listening.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the cool part.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: That can um definitely for me at least, um sometimes be an issue because sometimes I have a lot to say, or sometimes if I feel like I'm not saying anything, I just feel like my prayer time is being wasted.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: Um but if I'm the only one talking in a conversation, is there really a conversation going on?
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: No, right?
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Not really.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, think about calling someone on the phone and all you do is talk to them for 15 minutes and they don't get a single word out.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: It's not really a conversation, it's kind of me just saying stuff to them, it's just me yapping.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Telling them something.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: And then imagine even further if 10 minutes of that yapping is me saying stuff that I need.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Please help me.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Please help me with this.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: This is what I need.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: That's even worse, bro.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I mean, you can't compare a person to God.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: God wants us to bring our needs.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying don't bring your needs to God, obviously, but I'm just highlighting that we kind of got to chill for a bit sometimes and just listen.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Just sit there.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: If you're feeling God's presence, just sit there for a minute.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: Think actively about what is God trying to say to me.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: Ask Him.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: You're having the conversation with God.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: I can't tell you to do that.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can't be like, hey, go hear from God.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: It's your relationship with God, it's your conversation when you're praying.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: So when you start feeling his presence, just God, what are you trying to say to me?
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: What do you want to say?
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Um, where what are you trying to do with me?
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Where are you trying to take me?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: How do you feel on this topic that I brought to you?
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: And it's to emphasize on that, it won't always just be like a straight thought into your mind or just like his straight up voice in your mind that you hear.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: But if you're around people, you could be like, with I've without fail, every time I've asked that at an altar call, I would sit there for like maybe five minutes and eventually somebody would come and talk in my ear.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And like it's just without fail, it's like, whatever, what are you trying to say to me?
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: And every single time he would say something.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And it wasn't necessarily straight from him, but it was through other people, his words.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: And so you don't necessarily always hear his voice, but you hear his words.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like that.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: Because if you are um new to the subject and you're expecting like this loud, booming voice, like some people heard from the old testament.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: Um Might be disappointed unless that's just how God speaks to you.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: But He's not gonna do that to everyone.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Um you're not just gonna be sitting in your prayer closet and then God's gonna shake the roof with his voice to you.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Um it could also just be something throughout your life, like that you notice.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: It's like if you're praying, God show me something, He'll just show it to you through daily life, even it's never it it could be in all forms of things.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: So you just have to almost pay attention when you're asking that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you have to have to really pay attention to that.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: You have to learn how God talks to you.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: And I talk about that.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he talks to everyone differently.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: He's not gonna talk to Luke like he talks to me, he's not gonna talk to Ramsay like he talks to Luke.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: It's different.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: So that's just something you pray for.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: As you get closer to God, it'll be easier to hear his voice in the area that he's speaking to you.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: But it's also something you actively seek out and pray for.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Um and that goes along with this.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: God, teach me how to listen to you.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: God, I want to I want to hear when you kind of have your hand on something in my life and you're trying to tell me something.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, help me understand you.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: What are you trying to say?
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: The more you do that, the more you open up, the closer you get, you'll learn.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not something you can just intrinsically understand the first time you start trying to hear them.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: And you can change from prayer and petition, like you said, that kind of prayer, to starting off your prayer with listening.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: And you can start a conversation without immediately being the one to speak.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: You can you can get somebody, you can try to get somebody to listen.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Well, what I'm trying to say is what I'm trying to say is you can start a conversation getting you listening to them.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: By like them at you asking them, you know, what what do I do about this?
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: What is your advice?
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: What do you think I should do?
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: How should I go about this?
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: How should I maneuver this?
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: And then listening.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the way I start off my prayer by listening is I go in my room, I turn on worship music, and I just start pointing at my ears.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: I don't have to say a word.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Do it.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Just start.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: I kind of open my eyes, make sure God's watching, then I point at him again.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Just make sure he gets the point.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: It's good stuff.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: That's goofy.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: But yeah, don't actually do that, guys.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: That's not good.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: That is not a Hudson certified way to pray.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: You might just look a little crazy.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: Last week we went over.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: Um wow, I am such a LARPer.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: What verses did we go over?
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: It was James.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: James.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Because we're doing it.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: I got you broke.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: So split up.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: James.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: 1-9 to 18.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, we did that, what Luke said.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: We did 1-9 to 18.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: So now we're going to be doing 19 through 27.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: The rest of the next one.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: The next the next part in the Zaga of James 1.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: So let's get into it.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: This, these few verses are very packed.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Very much so.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: There's a lot to them.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're very packed.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And so to start, it says verse 19 understand this, my dear brothers and sisters.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Uh verse 20 is human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: So what this is showing me is being quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to get angry all go hand in hand with not being like selfish.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Kind of what you were, or was it you that were talking about?
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: You you don't you what Hudson was talking about earlier is you don't just call someone up and talk for 20 minutes straight and then be like, okay, bye.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Let me just dump on my problems and leave.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: You have to be quick to listen and slow to speak and like and not be selfish enough to make everything that you're saying about you and taking up other people's time, but listening to them and what their problems and scenarios may be and giving them the hand if they need it.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Um because if you're eager to get your point out instead of listening to what other people say, which not gonna lie, I do low-key be interrupting people sometimes.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: So, like, I mean, it's a pretty common thing.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Um, maybe you don't listen to a friend or you need someone to talk to, or they need because they need someone to talk to you and you had and they had a hard time.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: Um there's small, like almost not impactful in you, like when you interrupt somebody, or you maybe you just don't listen to them exactly when they're speaking.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: But it can really impact someone's life about that one moment about you of how that was kind of a little selfish.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: And if you do that often, it'll even just get brought up more and more in their minds, how like you're not you're not the person I want to go to to talk to.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: Because you don't listen.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but yeah, I like that.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: There really is so much in just those few verses because yes, a hundred percent, absolutely, that applies to listening to people in need.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Like you just said, I mean, completely accurate.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: If I'm going through something, I am not going to someone who I can very clearly tell they're not really listening.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: So it applies to that, but it also applies to you being humble, you receiving correction, you're receiving guidance from spiritual mentors.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Um, be quick to listen.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: Um, that shows humility.
- 27:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: If you're dealing with pride, if you're dealing with a I know it all mentality, or you just don't like correction, that's a sign of we've talked about it extensively in Proverbs, that's a sign of pride kind of creeping its way into your heart because you can't accept guidance and grow if you never listen to it.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: If if your initial first response when you hear guidance is to kind of tense up and try to shield against it, that's that's a sign that you're that's not great.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: And I can speak as someone who's dealt with this before.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: You you c you gotta pray that out.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: You gotta get that out of your system because that's not healthy for just you as a person and you in your walk with God.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: What if God's trying to talk to you and correct you on something?
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: But every time I hear a correction, I'm just tensing up.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: You gotta have humility.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: It's kind of one of the foundations of your walk with God.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: You gotta let God walk with you, you gotta let Him teach you.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: And then of course we have basically don't get angry, bro.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Don't do it.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a lot there.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's kind of talking about patience there.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: And then I kind of found a verse on it.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: It was Proverbs 16, 32.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: So it just basically means mastering your your temper and your emotions.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: It's better than any achievement you can win in battle or whatever.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: That's from Proverbs, which we went over.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And um it so it also it says in verse 20 saying human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: So that's anger is not a fruit of the spirit.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: That is not something that shines the light of God of Christ in you, and that's not something that like if someone saw in you would be like that's Jesus for sure.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: That's something that's like, oh, they have a problem, let's but let's help them work on that.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: But patience is though.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, and then so then the complete opposite would be patience, and that's exactly a fruit of the spirit, and that's exactly what if people see that in you, they're like, Oh, that is Jesus, and then they do want that.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: And I really like the exact wording that he uses there where he says human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires because he's painting the picture to you that sometimes we can get angry over things that we can pretty righteous or not righteously, but it's something objectively wrong.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Right, reasonably.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Yes, and we can get yes, reasonably, that's what I'm looking for.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: We can get reasonably angry, like Ramsey, if we're uh walking through the park and then a group of evil high school girls come up and they just start berating you, that's pretty reasonably for me to get angry.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: But if I let that fester in me and I just get super angry and I let that control me, that may feel righteous to me.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: You're my cousin, I love you.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: That that's a reasonable way for me to get angry.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: But James is saying, like, even if you have every right to get angry, that's not what God wants.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: He says it may feel righteous, it may feel good, it may feel good when you go tell their parents and get them all in trouble and all that.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: Um I feel like that's a pretty reasonable way to handle that.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: It may feel good when I punch them in the face.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a that's a better bad example.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Telling their parents, yeah.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's like a reasonable way.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it may feel good when I punch them in the face for speaking to my cousin like that.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: But um, that's not what God's looking for.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: I like what you said about the uh control.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: You don't want the anger to control you because that kind of human anger, that controlling anger, is the kind that would lead you away from your walk with God.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it'll and it'll fester in you and you'll just become this angry person.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: And that is the complete opposite of the walk of God you should be on with that peace.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: And so you don't you don't want that anger to control you.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: That is good.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because God straight up tells us that it's his vengeance at the end.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: That's what James is highlighting again.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Like it's God's at the end of the day.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: So even if it feels right to you, even if you have a reasonable reason to get angry, don't sit on it.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: You gotta let that go.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, trust God to handle it and let him get the righteous judgment.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: Let him handle the righteousness.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: We did a whole episode on forgiveness a while back.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: And we know patience is a really important theme because this is the second time he said it.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: He said it in the same chapter in verse 4 let your endurance grow.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: It's fully developed.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: You know, you'll be perfect, you'll need nothing.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: So patience is a key thing for a wise thing to hold on to.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and we've talked about patience a lot.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, I honestly feel like we don't need to like we didn't even mean to bring it up this episode because in Proverbs, there's just everything there.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Because I mean, like we said already, this is basically just like a proverbs of the New Testament.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: So we've we're not strangers to any of this, but yeah, patience is very key because that goes along with humility in a way.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: They're both aspects you should have um to maximize your growth with your relationship with God.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: They're kind of a foundation.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: I really like the kind of highlight that uh James gives that receiving God's word should result in obedient and living.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: That's kind of like a key theme I pick up on.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: Because we hear this all throughout um Proverbs, throughout the Bible as a whole, you can't just read the word, you can't just hear a message, you can't just know what Scripture says.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: The evidence that you know what scripture says is to see the changes in your life.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: It really does you no good if you just uh know the truth.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: It says it plainly, starting at 22, but don't just listen to God's word.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: You must do what it says, otherwise you are only fooling yourselves.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: For if you listen to the word, 23, if you listen to the word and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: You see yourself walk away and forget what you look like.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: I really like the example of a a mirror.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Um there's a funny fact.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: When I think of biblical times, for whatever reason, it just doesn't feel like they should have mirrors.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Like it feels like that's like a more modern technology.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: I wonder if that there was like something else and then like the translation was like, but I'm pretty sure they had mirrors.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: Like it's not like there's like technology for mirrors.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: It just for some reason I think there is.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: But like Yeah, I guess so.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: I when I first read that, I was like, they had mirrors back then.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for like years ago when I first like because this first people preach on it all the time.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: When I was a kid, I was like, they had mirrors back then.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: So it's just like I wouldn't imagine them having mirrors, but obviously they can see the reflections.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: So uh, but yeah, I really love the actual example of a mirror because it's like say you wake up and you have like terrible uh bedhead and you're going to church in the morning, you look in the mirror, you see you have a terrible bedhead, and you're just like, Yeah, it looks trash, and then you just leave, you don't try to fix it.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you you didn't do anything, you acknowledged it, but you left the house and went to church.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Now your brothers and sisters are non-righteously making fun of you because of your That's right.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: You did that to yourself, bro.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: I'm making fun of you.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that's a good point with the um you acknowledged it but didn't do anything about it.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because knowing that the hero was bad didn't change the fact that I walked out with a terrible bedhead and my social credit went down a bit.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I kinda I kind of got the same idea from just a kind of a different example with the same mirror, of course.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: But you can see the right version of you and walk away from it.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: You know, once you read the Bible, once you get the perspective, you can be like, oh, that's what I need to look like.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: That's what I need to do.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: And you walk away from it and you say, Oh, I didn't walk away from it as in like I'm done with it, I'm never going back, but I'm coming back later.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: You know, it I'm coming back later, I'll fix it later.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: And we can't do that.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: We have to implement those changes and truly make them physical changes instead of just oh, I see those things.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, it could be like that.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: I'll come back and I'll do that later.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: No, it needs to be something that we start doing, you know?
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, because we've talked about that before.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Where but it's it's very important that sometimes we can kind of pat ourselves on the back by reading something in the word of God, and then we know it.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so we just kind of like address it to ourselves, but don't actually change anything, and then we feel better because we know the truth.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so we kind of start spinning this tail to ourselves.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Like sometimes we can be our worst enemy, like we start spinning this tail, and then we feel better and feel justified and righteous when we haven't actually done any change.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I could read a verse about how I need to forgive, and I may not forgive the person, but I read this verse on forgiveness and I feel better because I read it.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: But if I don't go and actually forgive this person, it didn't do me anything.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: So yeah, we you gotta be wary for that because that's kind of the theme.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: You can't just look at it and tell yourself that you're doing better just because you know this truth, you know this thing from the word of God.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: You have to apply it.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: That's what James is really hitting at.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: It's true.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: When I read that at first, I immediately thought of that's the type of fool uh Proverbs was talking about.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: The person who goes walks and look in the mirror and is like, and then they walk away and then they forget it, like they forget what they look like.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Get out, and then make it even worse by being like, bro, why y'all making fun of me?
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like you are the fool from Proverbs, bro.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: And then sometimes we do that in our spiritual walk.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: We don't change anything, we just look at it, and then three months later we're still stuck in the same cycle, and we're just like, why can't I get out of this?
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: What's going on?
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna call you a fool, but you may need to read Proverbs and James.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: You you may need to start doing a little bit more than looking in the mirror.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: You're at least a jester.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: The analogy almost I took for it was kind of like imagine, um, off the mirror topic though, but imagine your parents asked you to go take out the trash.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: And so this is from verse 22, is when, but you don't listen, but don't just listen to God's word, you must do what it says, otherwise you are only fooling yourself.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Imagine your parents asked you to go take out the trash, and you're like, okay, they're like, okay, listen to me, go take out the trash.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: You're like, okay, I'll do it.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: And then you never take out the trash.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: It's almost like if God tells you something and you listen, but it goes in and out one ear, in one ear and out the other, and you're just like, okay, and you just don't acknowledge it again, you're like the fool.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: But then it also says in verse, but in verse 25, it says, But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: If you then went go take out the trash, maybe you have an allowance for your parents from your parents, or maybe you have like a reward.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: God will then bless it, just like your parents may bless you for doing your chores or doing what they say, and actually listening to him and following through with what you heard.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: God may bless you in more ways than one.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: That's a really good example because you may hear it, you may tell them that, and you may forget about it, you may put it out the other ear.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: But in the morning, when the trash truck comes and that trash is not at the road, we're in the south, bro.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: If you're a kid and you don't and that happens, you're getting beat.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: We're in the south.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: And you kind of did that to yourself because you just you didn't listen.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that's a good example.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Um, just a little jump back to verse 22.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: Um, it says, Oh no, I lied.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: I'm at verse 21.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: It says, So get rid of all filth and evil in your lives and humbly accept your word, the word God has planted in your hearts, where it has power to save your soul, all your souls.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: And you don't have multiple souls.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: I just confused myself.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was talking to the people as a whole.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: It's pretty he's talking to the people as a whole.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: But saying to put distance in your life, um, it's saying put distance in your life of things that are not of God and listen to God's words.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: Don't just hear it, but understand it and let it sink in and change your heart posture and change your actions because it says the word of God has power, power to do to save souls, to bring souls to him, to change your life, to change anything, really, like kind of time back to the message.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he has the power to do anything.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: So you need to be teachable so you can go out and teach with that power.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: I'm glad you I'm glad you went back to that verse because it also says, humbly accept the word of God.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: I thought about that for a second.
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: I was like, wait, you can apply that to many ways of your life, you know.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: Whenever you're starting something new or you're trying to grow in something, you have to go find information or you have to go to somebody that's obviously way better and more experienced than you are.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: And we can if we don't humble ourselves, then we're gonna be prideful and be like, oh, you know, you act like you know everything.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm not gonna take advice from somebody like that, or I'm not like that yet.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: So, you know, forget about it.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: We can do that with God.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: We can let our ego and our pride get in the way of what he's trying to teach us or what we need to learn, what we need to fix to correct, to get better.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: You know, even if it's a a small bad habit, like let's just say you're trying to learn the guitar.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: Well, if you pick wrong or you you you know, you keep hitting the wrong thing and it's buzzing, then and you don't listen to the guy who's trying to teach you, you just you're going nowhere for a long time.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: And it can start building bad habits that will, like you said, not benefit you in the future at all.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: That'll only hurt you and your progress.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: Very true.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Really gotta um, I feel like just maybe we should all strive to be humble.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: Some Bible is it's hinting just a little bit.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, maybe if it said this in other areas of the Bible as well, I would think it was trying to tell me that.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Something like Proverbs.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: Surely you guys can just hear this episode and then just not apply it.
- 41:33SPEAKER_02: You'll be fine.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: You'll be fine.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: JK, you better apply it.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: None of our listeners are looking in the mirror and then forgetting.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: None.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Go look in the mirror now.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: But they are listening right now, and like, what are they talking about?
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: No, they love us.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: Please say it.
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: Say it back in the comments.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: Can I get 15 hearts in the comments?
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: But um, but back to uh James, I like how he he kind of continues to close out the rest of the chapter by continuing the thought of actually applying the word of God.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Um 26 starts with if you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself and your religion is worthless.
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: Before I even go on to 27, that's yeah, that's already like he's straight up just like punching you in the gut right there.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: Your religion is worthless.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: No funny business.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he ain't playing around.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: And then 27, pure and gentle religion in the sight of God, the father, means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: Now I don't I don't think he's literally saying there that just the act of caring for orphans and widows, it's more about that yes, that's good, you should do that.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: You should want to care for those in need.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: But it's more about living like what we were just talking about.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: You have to live this stuff.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: If you say you're a Christian, if you go to church, you can you can talk the talk.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: You can sound like a Christian, you can look like a Christian.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: But if you aren't out there caring for people, if you aren't loving people, if you aren't actively practicing humility and you know checking yourself, if you're letting pride overflow, if you're letting anger control you, if you're not walking the walk, I mean, he says it.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: I don't have to you can't get mad at me because he says it for me.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Your religion is worthless.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: If you just follow a set of rules, but you don't actually live and let God's spirit change you in the way that he wants to change you, you're just kind of you're kind of put on an act.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: You're like the jester Luke was talking about.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: You're just kind of doing things.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: So if you don't live this stuff, then you're just kind of following this strange list of rules.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: Because for you it's strange because you're not actually living this.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: So why are you following this list of rules?
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what's the point if what you don't believe doesn't reflect in the way that you're living?
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Like is your rep is your reputation like God fearing and selfless?
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Like what James has been talking on this whole time and really the whole Bible?
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: And is it like um is it loving a person and being that selfless person that helps out the widow and the orphan?
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the poor and the needy?
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: Or is that that person that is known for being mean and selfish and um maybe not honest?
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: What what's that reputation?
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: Because if your religion will mean nothing if your reputation is not the first one.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: This brought me to another story kind of in the Bible that I kind of related here.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: It's the story where the the really poor woman gave her last two mites or last two pieces of what she owned, what she had, her entire everything she was worth.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: And he can Jesus compared that to how the Pharisees, they were they will give their abundance, they give of what they have left over to God or to the temple.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: And they also they didn't have love.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: This says you must have love, or you're gonna be corrupt.
- 45:02SPEAKER_03: You know, you're you're not gonna be, you gotta put that first before you put just following the rules first.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: But yeah, that's good.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, you gotta live it.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: That's that's kind of the the key theme of it.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: There's that's what James has really been hitting at.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: You gotta live this.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: Um letting God change you.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: True faith and belief isn't just knowing something intellectually.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: I feel like um, especially if you're like just starting to get into your relationship with God, it's just taking this seriously.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: Because I'm speaking from experience, because I did this when I was younger.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Um I would more attribute it to intellectual things, things I think.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, that's kind of just the way I saw it.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: That I know this, I'm thinking it, I know that the Bible the Bible says I should be humble.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: I know that I need to do these things, the Bible says.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: I know the truth, so I'm advancing, but it's it doesn't stop there.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Yes, know it, but you have to live it.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: If you really believe this, it's gonna change the way, not just the way you think, but it's gonna change how you speak, how you speak to others, controlling your tongue, literally.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna it's gonna influence that, it's gonna affect that, it's gonna change how you treat people, how you care for people.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: You'll probably listen to people and not just like Aaron was saying, just not really care.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: It'll change how you treat people and it'll change how you live overall.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: It's not just gonna be a list of rules you're you follow, it's not just gonna be things you think, it's not just gonna be emotions you go through.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a complete life change, and that's what James is really hitting at.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: And I like how y'all both made the point of it's it's lit like the way you live, it's it's not for lack of better words, it's not rules.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: It's more so the guidelines, the boundaries that was preached not too long ago, I think earlier this year, about how there's boundaries in your life.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: And they're not rules, but they're there to help keep you on the right path.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: So like you can think of them as rules, and like if you're not in the right mindset, you're thinking of them as something that's holding you back from like the things you could be, or maybe like just like all these different things that you feel like were put on you, but they're they're there to keep you safe in ways that you don't even know where you would go if you didn't have those boundaries and those guidelines in your life.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Because it's not it's not rules, it's it's the lifestyle that you live, and the so-and-so rules are the the boundaries that keep you living that life.
- 47:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then so you have those boundaries, and yes, you always need to set them, and then you have things more like being uh not quick to get angry.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: That's yes, that's a boundary you should have, but I feel like that one of the key things that James is trying to tell us here is that once you start living this, once you start getting closer to God and God's spirit comes in you, something like getting making sure you don't get quick to angry, it's not gonna be so much of a thing you have to physically set a boundary for.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: The closer you get to God, the less you should naturally feel inclined to let that anger like it won't even be as well.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Overall, um, you may struggle with that more than most, and you may need to work on it a bit more and set a boundary for that or humility, but overall, the closer you get to God, it's gonna show because those things are gonna be easier for you.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: You're not gonna have to start now.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: We all have to work.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: Like I'm not saying um just naively think God's gonna handle every area of your life for you.
- 48:28SPEAKER_02: You gotta work towards these things.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: Um, but the closer you get to God, the more you're gonna show his qualities and the qualities he wants you to have.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna get easier to you.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: And that's what James is I feel like that's what James is really getting at this chapter, that yeah, you live this, it's gonna show whether you want it to show or not, because you're just gonna start replicating the attributes and the character of God, and it's gonna be visible in your life to you and probably to other people, especially if they known you for a while and you haven't been living this.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're gonna be able to see that change.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: And that's what James is saying that it starts from within.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: It's not gonna be a list of outside things you change, it starts from within, and what's within is gonna change the outside.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: Um, one more point like I would like to touch on is it in verse 27 when we don't have any more time.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: Dang it.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: In verse 27, when it says, pure and genuine religion is in the sight of God, and the father means caring for the orphans and the widow in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: Um, something I kind of also got away from that part is you don't don't hold your worldly riches to yourself.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: Don't let those be the things that sustain you and keep you going and like almost that you can't let go of.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: You you are called to give to the widow and to help your brother and sister and to open the doors to those people when everybody else has closed them and be that person and let God sustain you.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, definitely.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: And not put all your your um like what is that?
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: Like all who you are in your worldly riches.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and make sure that you are caring for the people who are in need.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, your love's in the wrong spot.
- 50:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's not for what God tells you to love, tells you to cherish, but on the things of this world, like mammon.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, like, spoiler alert, you gotta love people.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Um I feel like that's like Christianity 101.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: It's it's the great commandment.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, literally.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: First one, love God, second one love people.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: It's kind of like if you put it that way, and the two most important commandments that Jesus gives, that's like half of the whole picture is loving people.
- 50:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 50:29SPEAKER_02: So you gotta do it.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you can't hold on to the things that you value over God because He'll set that straight real quick.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: That's a whole nother thing.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: You better set that straight real quick.
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: Because now you have an idol.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: That's a whole nother topic.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: But all right, guys, we've talked about uh a lot of really good stuff.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: I feel like I mean, I don't want to toot our own horns or anything, but I feel like we killed it.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: I feel like yeah, I feel like we did good.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: We had a we had a lot of stuff, a lot of deep stuff, and we we talked about it.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: That's what we do here.
- 50:59SPEAKER_02: That's what we did.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: Um just some closing thoughts, concerns, comments from yours, truly.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: Um concerns.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: Well, dude, I'm concerned for our listeners.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: They need to hear it.
- 51:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they need they need this.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: We care about travel.
- 51:12SPEAKER_02: Um yes, we do.
- 51:14SPEAKER_02: But anyway, um, from the message don't let your imagination limit you.
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: That was kind of the key.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:23SPEAKER_02: Um, know that there's a difference between believing God can and actually imagining what he can do for you.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: God wants you to use that imagination.
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: Um I feel like he smiles when you think of something big and you ask him for it and truly believe it's something that you couldn't ever imagine before.
- 51:41SPEAKER_02: Something that's way out of your physical limits.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: I feel like it kind of makes God happy when we have that type of faith.
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, bring out your inner child.
- 51:49SPEAKER_02: Dude, this is my conclusion.
- 51:51unknown: I'm just kidding.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: Let him have his moments.
- 51:54SPEAKER_02: Bring out your inner child, Ram just said, but yeah.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: Um, so just try to keep that in mind.
- 51:59SPEAKER_02: Kind of try to practice that.
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: That don't limit what you believe God can do, what you can imagine based on your own experiences.
- 52:06SPEAKER_02: God can do so much more than any of us can ever think.
- 52:09SPEAKER_02: So keep that in mind.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: He created the universe so he can do more than you think he can.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so just keep that in mind.
- 52:15SPEAKER_02: Have that faith.
- 52:16SPEAKER_02: Don't limit yourself and don't put God in a box.
- 52:19SPEAKER_02: And then for James, just really feel like the key, again, is yes, be humble.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: Yes, don't be quick to anger.
- 52:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, all those things 100%.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: But the core of it is if you're really living this, if you're really seeking after God and you have that relationship and you're trying to get closer to him, the closer you get to his heart, the closer you'll start to exhibit those things.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: And you won't have to consciously, you know, set boundaries for those things.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: You won't have to consciously try to keep in your anger because as you get closer to God, now hear me again, I'm not saying that you shouldn't try to keep in your anger just because you're following God.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: But the closer you get to Him, you'll start living in.
- 53:03SPEAKER_02: That's what James is getting at.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: It can't just be something you talk, talk about.
- 53:07SPEAKER_02: It has to be something that changes you.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: You're just gonna change everything.
