Latest / Birdland Territory / Wild card chase hits big bump on this road trip
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's a new edition of Birdland Territory and off day
- 0:10Speaker 1: edition coming out of the series of Minnesota and ahead
- 0:13Speaker 1: of the series in Tampa Bay. Amazingly, the Orioles are
- 0:17Speaker 1: still two games out of the wild Card. I really
- 0:20Speaker 1: thought it was three this point, checked again this morning
- 0:23Speaker 1: and double check. Wait, I'm I seeing that right now
- 0:26Speaker 1: they only have to climb over five teams to get
- 0:28Speaker 1: that spot. There is a real problem. Texas is holding
- 0:31Speaker 1: that spot, believe it or not. At sixty and sixty
- 0:34Speaker 1: one Minnesota, Detroit a halfback, Cleveland a game back, Toronto
- 0:39Speaker 1: game and a half back, which means the Oils are
- 0:41Speaker 1: last place by the way, and Baltimore two out. So
- 0:44Speaker 1: the math still works. But as we begin a new
- 0:48Speaker 1: Birdland Territory with Steve, tim and Brad, I would like
- 0:50Speaker 1: to ask my co hosts, where is your hope level
- 0:54Speaker 1: at this point? I think it reflects Land, which is
- 0:57Speaker 1: really low right now. Man, if we put this for
- 0:59Speaker 1: a vote to make it or not to be a
- 1:01Speaker 1: landslide against Having said that, you're a five game winning
- 1:04Speaker 1: streak away from making it real exciting. But we haven't
- 1:09Speaker 1: seen that much this year. What are your guys' thoughts
- 1:11Speaker 1: coming out of the Minnesota series.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, my my biggest concern is that there's just more
- 1:16Speaker 2: teams climbing ahead of them, and that's it just gets
- 1:18Speaker 2: tough because when you win a game, you have to
- 1:20Speaker 2: expect five other teams to lose in order to actually
- 1:23Speaker 2: gain a game in the standing. So, yes, there are
- 1:25Speaker 2: only two games out, but when you start doing the math,
- 1:28Speaker 2: it starts to get a little bit more difficult to
- 1:29Speaker 2: climb up the standings. And it just it's the up
- 1:32Speaker 2: and down it's been all season. It's, you know, the
- 1:35Speaker 2: pitching hasn't been the best the last five games, and
- 1:38Speaker 2: the offense has kind of scored some runs, and it's
- 1:40Speaker 2: just that it's not lining up, and it just it
- 1:43Speaker 2: kind of just feels like the same thing that we've
- 1:45Speaker 2: been talking about the entire season. It's just the inconsistency
- 1:48Speaker 2: of both sides of the ball. And that's where I
- 1:50Speaker 2: feel like they're at in the standings. That's why they
- 1:52Speaker 2: are there, and it's it just to me, it's it's
- 1:54Speaker 2: just gonna get more difficult if you're not able to,
- 1:57Speaker 2: like Steve said, put together five game winning streaks, because
- 2:00Speaker 2: I feel like that's what's going to take at this point,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and the inconsistency, to me is just kind of the
- 2:04Speaker 2: red flag that I just don't know if they're going
- 2:06Speaker 2: to be able to sustain that the rest of the season,
- 2:09Speaker 2: even though.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You know, they started talking about a fifty game sprint.
- 2:12Speaker 3: It's just over.
- 2:13Speaker 2: When you look at the course of the season, you
- 2:15Speaker 2: just can this team actually sustain winning baseball and they
- 2:19Speaker 2: just haven't proven it to this point, So that would
- 2:21Speaker 2: be my concern with them getting back into the wild
- 2:23Speaker 2: card standings.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's sort of just spinning your tires. And I
- 2:28Speaker 4: feel like we've said this about a lot of series,
- 2:30Speaker 4: but you can sort of say that this series is
- 2:33Speaker 4: kind of a microcosm where Game one Dean Kramer best
- 2:37Speaker 4: start of his season by far, one of the best
- 2:39Speaker 4: starts of his career, seven innings, just one in and
- 2:42Speaker 4: run one to hit, one walk, give them credit for
- 2:45Speaker 4: fighting late. Then Game two you score the runs early
- 2:49Speaker 4: and then the offense goes quiet, but you win. That
- 2:51Speaker 4: game sets up a rubber match, and then yesterday you
- 2:54Speaker 4: couldn't feel even better, you know, with Shane bos on
- 2:57Speaker 4: the mound, because over his last fifteen start he pitched
- 3:00Speaker 4: to us Sell up a three eer. But he's just
- 3:03Speaker 4: never gotten run support. Dylan Beavers had the big blast,
- 3:06Speaker 4: the three run homer to put you up four to
- 3:08Speaker 4: one with Boz on the mound, but Boz didn't have
- 3:11Speaker 4: it and you ended up losing that game, losing that series.
- 3:14Speaker 4: And it's just a bad direction that this team is in, guys,
- 3:19Speaker 4: because they've lost five of their last seven series.
- 3:22Speaker 5: You're not gaining any sort of momentum.
- 3:25Speaker 4: And now you're entering arguably, maybe not even arguably, you're
- 3:29Speaker 4: your toughest part of your schedule remaining.
- 3:31Speaker 5: These next ten games.
- 3:33Speaker 4: You have the Rays at the Trop and that that
- 3:35Speaker 4: was a rough series at the Trop last time they
- 3:38Speaker 4: were there, they swept the Rays of Camden Yards. But
- 3:40Speaker 4: the Rays of won nine straight games. They have the
- 3:43Speaker 4: best record in the majors right now. Then get take
- 3:46Speaker 4: on the Yankees, which that's always tough, and then the
- 3:49Speaker 4: Rays again. So these next ten games, that's a bearer
- 3:54Speaker 4: of a schedule. Over this next week and a half.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You have the memo to national me never never say
- 4:03Speaker 1: again the Rays can't win it. Please please don't do that,
- 4:07Speaker 1: because in March. In March, the narrative was it's a
- 4:10Speaker 1: four team race in the Al East and any of
- 4:13Speaker 1: the four can win it, but we know Tampa won't. Okay,
- 4:18Speaker 1: well again as they just the Tampa Bay Ray's magic.
- 4:23Speaker 1: They can change front office people, they change players, it
- 4:28Speaker 1: just keeps going. Whatever they have the you know, the
- 4:30Speaker 1: Oriels needs some of that to rub off on them.
- 4:34Speaker 1: So question comes should they start playing for next year?
- 4:37Speaker 1: And I'm gonna tell you, if I hear any of
- 4:39Speaker 1: that from the Oriel management, it will shock me because
- 4:42Speaker 1: I think they just think, what you're two out, you
- 4:44Speaker 1: just you just still got to try to play for
- 4:46Speaker 1: this year. Even as bad as it's gotten. They are
- 4:49Speaker 1: four and seven this month, they're having to losing road trip,
- 4:52Speaker 1: but just the signs are bad everywhere they look. But
- 4:56Speaker 1: even if they played for next year, what would that
- 4:58Speaker 1: even mean? More at bad for Jackson Holiday, they're playing
- 5:01Speaker 1: him more at bats for Kobe, they're playing him. I mean,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I'm not you know it, does it make sense? Is
- 5:07Speaker 1: there a play for next year they could even turn to?
- 5:10Speaker 2: I think by the just watching the last three or
- 5:13Speaker 2: four starts, I know the starters didn't have their best stuff,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but the fact that Trevor Rodgers Boz a couple of
- 5:19Speaker 2: the guys there in these last four or five starts,
- 5:21Speaker 2: they've only thrown like sixty pitches, eighty pitches at the most.
- 5:25Speaker 2: If you're playing for next year, you're not pulling the start.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I feel like you're not pulling the starter right there.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Like I said, I know they didn't have their best stuff,
- 5:31Speaker 2: but I feel like if you're just kind of trying
- 5:33Speaker 2: to play out the games, you let the starters go
- 5:35Speaker 2: one hundred, then you go to your bullpen and kind
- 5:37Speaker 2: of see where it falls there. But they're clearly trying
- 5:39Speaker 2: to win these games. The bad start in Texas. Can't
- 5:43Speaker 2: remember who the starter was at the time, but I
- 5:45Speaker 2: think it was eighty pitches. He was COVID.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's two or three innings. He was out
- 5:50Speaker 3: of the game.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Then Boz yesterday three innings, and I just feel like,
- 5:53Speaker 2: if you're playing for next year and trying to see
- 5:55Speaker 2: what you have, you're not going to these guys immediately.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And Cam Sanders through two innings on Monday. He comes
- 6:00Speaker 2: back in yesterday trying to get multiple innings, which is
- 6:02Speaker 2: tough to do as a reliever, and probably a spot
- 6:05Speaker 2: he hasn't really done. So to me, it's I think
- 6:08Speaker 2: I think both can kind of be true. I think
- 6:10Speaker 2: you try to see the pieces you have for next
- 6:12Speaker 2: year moving forward and still try to win the games,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and you don't want you know, yesterday, I think if
- 6:16Speaker 2: Boss stayed in there, it could have got really ugly.
- 6:19Speaker 2: But so I think you're trying to win the games
- 6:21Speaker 2: the best you can and to see what you have
- 6:22Speaker 2: moving forward. So I feel like there's some kind of
- 6:25Speaker 2: wiggle room there between you know, playing for this year
- 6:27Speaker 2: and intending for the wildcard and really.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Finding out what you have moving forward.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Because the trades that they made to me scream we're
- 6:34Speaker 2: playing for twenty twenty seven and beyond.
- 6:37Speaker 5: And Michael I said as much.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Look it, he didn't like the position they were at
- 6:42Speaker 4: and that's why he told. And he said if they
- 6:44Speaker 4: were in a better position, he would have bought, but
- 6:47Speaker 4: they weren't.
- 6:48Speaker 5: That was just their reality.
- 6:49Speaker 4: And I've been pretty stepfast and saying this ever since
- 6:53Speaker 4: the deadline ten days ago.
- 6:54Speaker 5: It feels like forever go with this point God, But.
- 6:58Speaker 4: I'm leaning in the guys that you were just talking about, Steve.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I want to see Jackson Holliday every single day. I
- 7:05Speaker 4: don't care if it's a left handed starter. I want
- 7:07Speaker 4: to see Kobe Mayo every single day. I don't care
- 7:09Speaker 4: if it's a righty. You know, Dylan Beavers and Kobe
- 7:11Speaker 4: Mayo as well. I look, I hate to say it,
- 7:15Speaker 4: and I know he's provided some boost for them recently,
- 7:19Speaker 4: even in the midst of his struggles prior to that.
- 7:21Speaker 4: But guys like Leodi Tavers, you know he's not gonna
- 7:24Speaker 4: be here in twenty twenty seven. I'm curious how they're
- 7:26Speaker 4: going to use Chris Bassett because all signs point to
- 7:30Speaker 4: him probably coming back in the rotation. But Steve, I
- 7:34Speaker 4: know you'd like to see Trey Gibson. I'd like to
- 7:36Speaker 4: see Trey Gibson again even more kay Povich, I just
- 7:40Speaker 4: think you can still play these young guys and get
- 7:43Speaker 4: inventory on what you have. And I still don't think
- 7:48Speaker 4: that's waving the white flag. You can still manage the
- 7:50Speaker 4: game and play the game to win, but lean into
- 7:54Speaker 4: the young guys while doing it.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Here's my guest. My guess is Michael Farrett has bumped
- 8:00Speaker 1: to the top of that list and that they'd like
- 8:03Speaker 1: to see him at some point this year after reacquiring
- 8:06Speaker 1: him in the Todler Wells trade. So the Orioles lose
- 8:11Speaker 1: seventy five to Minnesota fifty eight and sixty three as
- 8:14Speaker 1: their record as they head to Tampa. When we come back,
- 8:17Speaker 1: what does the math say, Let's look at the numbers,
- 8:20Speaker 1: what it might take to get the oreoles in. We're
- 8:23Speaker 1: still gonna do that. I know that sounds crazy, but
- 8:26Speaker 1: there is math that could make it work. Can this
- 8:29Speaker 1: team do it? I know everybody's saying no chance, but
- 8:31Speaker 1: we'll give you the math in a moment here on
- 8:33Speaker 1: Birdland Territory Science Experiment.
- 8:38Speaker 6: For the one minute, we have to tell you about
- 8:39Speaker 6: why we love Quint's electrolytes, including watermelon salt, raspberry salt.
- 8:43Speaker 6: And I'm holding a citrus salt, just opened it and
- 8:46Speaker 6: to pour some powder into my water, shake it up
- 8:49Speaker 6: and AJ, why do you love it?
- 8:50Speaker 7: I love Quints because after a long night out, a
- 8:53Speaker 7: long day at the gym, a long walk in this
- 8:54Speaker 7: Florida humidity, it tastes great and it gives me all
- 8:57Speaker 7: the electrolytes I need. Why sugar free Stevy a free
- 9:01Speaker 7: Keto approved and taste sweet because of that delicious fermented rice.
- 9:08Speaker 6: It does taste really good. I'm drinking it right now
- 9:11Speaker 6: while we talking about it. It's also made in the USA.
- 9:13Speaker 6: Rigorously third party tested. Give your body what it really
- 9:16Speaker 6: needs to stay hydrated. Go to Quinns dot com slash
- 9:19Speaker 6: foul for free shipping on your order and three sixty
- 9:21Speaker 6: five day returns. That's q u i ncee dot com
- 9:24Speaker 6: slash fu l for free shipping and three sixty five
- 9:26Speaker 6: day returns quins dot com slash foul. These statements have
- 9:29Speaker 6: not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This
- 9:31Speaker 6: product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent
- 9:34Speaker 6: any disease.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Berland Territory continues with you today, and so the recent
- 9:39Speaker 1: math says this, since sweeping Houston, now the break as
- 9:43Speaker 1: a very promising seven year win streak. At that point,
- 9:46Speaker 1: they're nine to twelve and they've gone two and five
- 9:49Speaker 1: the last seven series, losing road Trip two and four,
- 9:52Speaker 1: So there was momentum there. They couldn't keep it going.
- 9:57Speaker 1: So what does the math say. Now here's the way
- 9:59Speaker 1: I look at it. Forty one games to go, eighty
- 10:01Speaker 1: four wins might do it. You might even need less
- 10:04Speaker 1: this year, as we've discussed, But let's just say eighty
- 10:06Speaker 1: four was the number, which would be less than most years.
- 10:09Speaker 1: The eros would need to go twenty six and fifteen
- 10:12Speaker 1: at six thirty four ball. So it doesn't seem like
- 10:15Speaker 1: this team could do it, but other teams it didn't
- 10:18Speaker 1: seem like could do it did it. So the math
- 10:19Speaker 1: is still works for them. The issue is has to
- 10:23Speaker 1: happen on the field lineup, not hitting mostly some of
- 10:26Speaker 1: the starters even recently, some short starts, some leakage in
- 10:30Speaker 1: the bullpen, and that's how you get two and five
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the last seven series.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and then when you look at that number twenty
- 10:37Speaker 2: six and fifteen, you're going to the trup where I
- 10:40Speaker 2: think I saw last night.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I think the numbers are.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Right forty one and eighteen at home or something like
- 10:45Speaker 2: that this year. I don't know if that's the actual number,
- 10:47Speaker 2: but that's like that's insanety one.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So if you take.
- 10:52Speaker 2: If you take that and you figure, okay, you win
- 10:55Speaker 2: that series. Now you're looking at twenty four and fourteen.
- 10:58Speaker 2: That's at the best case scenario. You can't imagine. You
- 11:00Speaker 2: can't envision a sweep there. So it's just the numbers
- 11:03Speaker 2: just start to stack up.
- 11:04Speaker 3: If you don't put.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Together series win after series win, mix in a sweep
- 11:07Speaker 2: here or there, it just gets really tough. So it's
- 11:10Speaker 2: the stretch is not gonna get any easier. And I know,
- 11:13Speaker 2: I feel like we've made this statement fifteen times this year,
- 11:15Speaker 2: But these next ten games I feel like are gonna
- 11:18Speaker 2: determine whether or not they can actually make a run
- 11:21Speaker 2: at this thing. And it's it's gonna get way harder
- 11:23Speaker 2: before it gets any easier.
- 11:26Speaker 4: During this ten game stretch. And maybe Steve I'll be
- 11:29Speaker 4: even more optimistic than that. I don't know if it's
- 11:32Speaker 4: gonna take eighty four wins, that this really might be
- 11:35Speaker 4: eighty two, eighty one, or maybe even eighty one. Who knows,
- 11:40Speaker 4: But I'm looking at this ten game stretch for the O's.
- 11:46Speaker 4: The bottom can't fall out, like this can't be a
- 11:49Speaker 4: two an eight.
- 11:50Speaker 5: This can't even be a three and seven.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Like if you could go four and six, you're realistically
- 11:57Speaker 4: you're probably still in the mix.
- 11:58Speaker 5: You're probably still with the striking distance.
- 12:01Speaker 4: If you go four and six, and if you go
- 12:03Speaker 4: five hundred or better, obviously that's that's gravy. But it's
- 12:06Speaker 4: a tough remaining schedule. You have a couple of series
- 12:10Speaker 4: where look, I bring up the A's, but the A's
- 12:12Speaker 4: just won a series against the Red Sox, the Rockies.
- 12:16Speaker 4: That's a winnable the Matts, excuse me. But besides that,
- 12:21Speaker 4: it's a lot of teams still in the mix. You
- 12:24Speaker 4: know that the Guardians, the Cardinals are still in the
- 12:27Speaker 4: mix for an NL wild card. The Blue Jays you
- 12:30Speaker 4: mentioned Steve are above the Orioles, now Yankees twice, the Brewers,
- 12:35Speaker 4: so if they if they get in, they'll earn it.
- 12:40Speaker 4: I just think it's it's a daunting schedule one. Just
- 12:43Speaker 4: with this team's inconsistencies, it's gonna be an uproad to climb.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I wish I'd double checked this before we start taping,
- 12:52Speaker 1: but I think I'm right here. The last time the
- 12:54Speaker 1: Oils played the Yankees, they won the series, and I
- 12:56Speaker 1: believe the last time they played the Race they may
- 12:59Speaker 1: have swept them. Yeah, so last time they played the Dodgers,
- 13:03Speaker 1: they wont We've mentioned this number before. They beat the Dodgers,
- 13:07Speaker 1: they beat the Yankees, they beat the Rays. The Euros
- 13:09Speaker 1: have shown us at their best what they can do.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I don't think we've seen their best in weeks now,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and they just don't have that look of a team
- 13:16Speaker 1: making a run. I mean they just don't. So are
- 13:19Speaker 1: we here to put a fork in them. I don't
- 13:20Speaker 1: think we are, but we're here to say we see
- 13:23Speaker 1: what the fans see, and when everybody's seeing right now
- 13:25Speaker 1: a team that doesn't have anywhere near the look of
- 13:28Speaker 1: a playoff team and a team that's frankly in last place.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So the orel is going to have to live with
- 13:32Speaker 1: that for a little while. Let's go backwards and before
- 13:36Speaker 1: we start taping, Brad, you made some comments about Shane
- 13:38Speaker 1: Boss who just so crazy for this season, so perfect
- 13:45Speaker 1: that the one time they get him runs, he immediately
- 13:48Speaker 1: gave them back. It wasn't even didn't even keep the
- 13:50Speaker 1: lead for like two minutes. His loss. He was down
- 13:56Speaker 1: from ninety five point nine average ninety four, and he
- 13:59Speaker 1: gave up nine hits in three innings that tied his
- 14:01Speaker 1: career worst most hits allowed. He didn't have a lot
- 14:05Speaker 1: of bad games, this guy, he's pretty steady, but that
- 14:08Speaker 1: was one What were you seeing?
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:10Speaker 2: To me, it was just, you know, trying to get
- 14:12Speaker 2: the fastball down, trying to get his splitter was the
- 14:14Speaker 2: biggest thing I saw.
- 14:15Speaker 3: His fastball was just kind of all over the place.
- 14:18Speaker 2: He was really getting into bad counts one oh two
- 14:21Speaker 2: to oho with his fastball.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Then when he's throwing his splitter, it was just up.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Everything just seemed to be up.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And when your velocities down a little bit, he relies
- 14:29Speaker 2: on that fastball riding by people at the top of
- 14:32Speaker 2: his zone. When you're not throwing ninety seven to ninety
- 14:34Speaker 2: eight like he normally has, it becomes hittable. And it's
- 14:37Speaker 2: crazy to think now that ninety four to ninety five
- 14:39Speaker 2: is not plus velo in the major leagues, but these
- 14:42Speaker 2: guys see it every single day. And if you're not
- 14:44Speaker 2: able to get ahead with them and get your knuckle curve,
- 14:47Speaker 2: which yesterday just didn't seem to have the bite and
- 14:49Speaker 2: the break to it, you're gonna get hit.
- 14:51Speaker 3: And the guy, the.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Guys at that played the Twins yesterday were just super
- 14:55Speaker 2: comfortable up there. They got in advantages count advantage counts,
- 14:58Speaker 2: and they really took advantage of the fastball up and
- 15:01Speaker 2: it was hard contact a lot of the a lot
- 15:04Speaker 2: of the game, and he was lucky enough to keep
- 15:06Speaker 2: him in the ballpark, but it wasn't lucky enough to
- 15:09Speaker 2: you know, get out to people.
- 15:10Speaker 3: It was it was line drives all over the place.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And I just think it has a lot to do
- 15:14Speaker 2: with making a ton of starts, and he's been very
- 15:17Speaker 2: reliable and he's thrown a lot of innings and the
- 15:19Speaker 2: you know.
- 15:19Speaker 3: The Orioles. Who knows where they would be if he
- 15:21Speaker 3: hasn't had the year that he's had.
- 15:23Speaker 2: But it's just kind of one of those days where
- 15:26Speaker 2: Ben kind of made a good comment on the broadcast yesterday,
- 15:29Speaker 2: one third of the year is gonna be you're just
- 15:31Speaker 2: not gonna have your stuff, and that was definitely the
- 15:33Speaker 2: one third that he just didn't have his stuff and
- 15:36Speaker 2: the Twins took advantage. And hopefully he comes out the
- 15:38Speaker 2: next start and just kind of lets this one go by,
- 15:40Speaker 2: but hopefully it doesn't linger into the you know, two, three,
- 15:43Speaker 2: four starts down the line, But it.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Could just be the August fatigue.
- 15:46Speaker 2: It gets tough this time of year, and Shane Boz
- 15:49Speaker 2: hasn't really made a full year's worth of starts before.
- 15:53Speaker 2: It gets tougher guys at this time of year, and
- 15:55Speaker 2: it could just be one of those starts. So I
- 15:56Speaker 2: hope that he's able to just kind of wash this
- 15:58Speaker 2: one and move on, but it was a tough one
- 16:01Speaker 2: for him yesterday.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Well, first and foremost, I'm just glad that he isn't heard,
- 16:06Speaker 4: because that was my fear watching that game, because whenever
- 16:10Speaker 4: you see a velosity drop of it was two miles
- 16:13Speaker 4: per hour on his fastball, two and a half miles
- 16:15Speaker 4: per hour on the change up. He also wasn't getting
- 16:18Speaker 4: anywhere near his normal spin rate on the knuckle curve.
- 16:22Speaker 4: It was a difference of four inches compared to his
- 16:25Speaker 4: year average, which is pretty substantial. So Shane Bos didn't
- 16:29Speaker 4: have it last night, and it's really unfortunate because he's
- 16:33Speaker 4: had a heck of a year and again his prior
- 16:36Speaker 4: fifteen starts he had a two nine to three ERA.
- 16:39Speaker 4: And the crazy part of it is the Orioles have
- 16:41Speaker 4: won just four of those fifteen starts.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Prior to that.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Way, it makes no sense they just don't score for
- 16:48Speaker 4: Shane Bos, but they did yesterday, and of course, in
- 16:51Speaker 4: almost typical fashion of the season guys that they end
- 16:55Speaker 4: up scoring for Boz and then Boz has a bad game.
- 16:58Speaker 5: So just unfortunately, I'm.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Really glad to have Shane Boz locked up because I
- 17:04Speaker 1: think it's about time this team can count on some
- 17:07Speaker 1: starters years down the road and they can say that
- 17:10Speaker 1: now about Bradish and Boz. Brandon Young's under team control.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It's a great start on next year. And to me,
- 17:17Speaker 1: Shane Boz is a real pro. Getting to know him
- 17:19Speaker 1: a little bit this year and being around on the
- 17:21Speaker 1: for USA first for me, obviously he wasn't an oriole,
- 17:24Speaker 1: but he handles himself so well. And I see, Brad,
- 17:27Speaker 1: will you tell me what you see? Zero frustration with
- 17:31Speaker 1: the lack of run support, And I don't think yesterday
- 17:34Speaker 1: anying canna do with that. Some might say, oh, he
- 17:36Speaker 1: finally got ticked off. Now, No, this is get way
- 17:38Speaker 1: past that. This guy just goes out and does his
- 17:41Speaker 1: job and doesn't care about that. He would he loved
- 17:45Speaker 1: to get eight runs. Who wouldn't, of course, But he's
- 17:47Speaker 1: going to do his thing, and I think it's so.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I just think he's still a pretty young pitcher, but
- 17:53Speaker 1: I think he can show Trey Gibson and Michael Farrad
- 17:56Speaker 1: and Kate Povich and these young guys a little bit
- 17:59Speaker 1: about how it's done every five days.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no doubt Shane boss is a true professional.
- 18:04Speaker 2: The way he carries himself on the field, you can
- 18:06Speaker 2: tell he's prepared every single start.
- 18:09Speaker 3: That just happens in the big league.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Sometimes you can prepare do everything right, and you just
- 18:13Speaker 2: don't have your stuff or you're just not it's just
- 18:15Speaker 2: not there that day. But he never shows frustration, which
- 18:18Speaker 2: I give him a ton of credit for his record
- 18:20Speaker 2: at four and twelve. I think it is this year,
- 18:22Speaker 2: and it's just when you watch it starts, it's like
- 18:25Speaker 2: it doesn't add up. But he has been the same
- 18:27Speaker 2: guy from opening since opening day until now. Nothing has
- 18:31Speaker 2: changed on the mound. There's no frustration showing he wants
- 18:34Speaker 2: to win, and when he's out there, he's a competitor,
- 18:36Speaker 2: but he doesn't show the frustration. And I just think
- 18:39Speaker 2: that's a great quality to have him. Like you said, Steve,
- 18:42Speaker 2: to your point, there's a lot of guys watching these
- 18:43Speaker 2: games in the minor leagues, and if you're looking for somebody,
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, there's nobody better than Bradish and Boss to
- 18:48Speaker 2: watch out there. They are cool out there, they keep
- 18:51Speaker 2: their composure, they get fired up when they need to,
- 18:53Speaker 2: and they get outs when they need to. But outside
- 18:55Speaker 2: of that, they just go out there and they go
- 18:57Speaker 2: about their business and they do their job, and that's
- 19:00Speaker 2: all you can really ask for.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Michael Lijah said to give up a lot to bring
- 19:04Speaker 4: in Shane Boz, but he's proven that he's worth what
- 19:08Speaker 4: they gave up, and it was even better to double
- 19:11Speaker 4: down and give him the contract because he's just been
- 19:14Speaker 4: so consistent over this stretch and a bulldog. He eats innings,
- 19:19Speaker 4: he's got nasty stuff when he's on. I think it
- 19:24Speaker 4: was a great addition, and like you said, Steve, it's
- 19:26Speaker 4: a great piece for the future him and Bradish.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Yeah, well, they acquired him looking at his status have
- 19:31Speaker 1: always been mod you know, modest. He's never lit it
- 19:34Speaker 1: up exactly like everybody thought. But you can see what
- 19:38Speaker 1: they saw the potential. They led the Oils to give
- 19:41Speaker 1: up hopping package of players to get this guy. But
- 19:44Speaker 1: now they've got him locked up, so that trade, you know,
- 19:47Speaker 1: they lessened the blow of giving up all the young
- 19:49Speaker 1: talent because he's going to be winning games for the
- 19:51Speaker 1: Oils for years to come. So that's that's great to see.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And there's going to be a year soon, maybe next
- 19:56Speaker 1: when he actually scored some runs for him and he
- 19:59Speaker 1: doesn't have just four wins on his pitching record. When
- 20:02Speaker 1: we come back, we're gonna note a couple of things
- 20:04Speaker 1: on the miners, and we're gonna talk about a beaver weaver,
- 20:08Speaker 1: which we saw in the final game of the series
- 20:10Speaker 1: in Minnesota. That's next on birdl.
- 20:13Speaker 6: This is that time of year, AJ it is Baseball's
- 20:15Speaker 6: time to shine, and it is sea Geek's time to
- 20:19Speaker 6: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing, seating
- 20:24Speaker 6: and games that are even sold out available on sea geek.
- 20:28Speaker 8: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 20:31Speaker 8: coming up. We have Yankees clubs coming up. Where's Yankees
- 20:33Speaker 8: red Sox? That means stuff Again, there's some big moments
- 20:36Speaker 8: that are coming up here in the as the penachases
- 20:39Speaker 8: really heat up. Go to seke can find those green
- 20:41Speaker 8: tickets with the best deals and get yourself out to
- 20:44Speaker 8: an MLB game.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you. They will actually put
- 20:48Speaker 6: a red dot next to a ticket that they don't
- 20:51Speaker 6: feel is your best. Look. Green dot means very good
- 20:56Speaker 6: code for you. It's Territory ten ten percent off your
- 21:00Speaker 6: next set of MLB tickets at sea Keek. That's ten
- 21:02Speaker 6: percent off MLB tickets when you use the promo code
- 21:06Speaker 6: Territory one zero. Make sure you click the link in
- 21:08Speaker 6: the description to download the app and have the code
- 21:10Speaker 6: automatically added to your account so you can use it later.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So, yeah, the Oils heading into murderer's row here, raise
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yankees for the next ten and still got to climb
- 21:21Speaker 1: over five teams for the playoffs. But let's talk about this.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I like the Factor called it a be a Beaver
- 21:28Speaker 1: Weaver three run home run as an Euro as a
- 21:30Speaker 1: Weaver and Beaver Beaver's hit a Weaver. But it's hard
- 21:35Speaker 1: to say, don't try that at home three run shot.
- 21:38Speaker 1: He'd gone forty five games without a homer, and we
- 21:40Speaker 1: had Dylan on the show here recently. Everybody got Seed Graat.
- 21:43Speaker 1: He's a great guy. I think he's a little disappointed
- 21:46Speaker 1: with this season. And when I look at his total
- 21:49Speaker 1: package of talents, I do see a future everyday regular
- 21:53Speaker 1: who could have a good walk rate, who could hit
- 21:56Speaker 1: two seventy, who could hit twenty bombs. I mean, he's still, oh,
- 22:00Speaker 1: I think learning what it's going to take for him
- 22:03Speaker 1: to do that.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think so.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And I think it's unfortunate that he had the injury
- 22:07Speaker 2: earlier in the year that it really costs him a
- 22:08Speaker 2: big chunk of the season, because when you're trying to
- 22:11Speaker 2: get into the flow of the big league season, trying
- 22:13Speaker 2: to figure out how to do everything on a day
- 22:15Speaker 2: to day basis. You throw an injury which probably didn't
- 22:18Speaker 2: happen a ton when he was in the minor leagues
- 22:20Speaker 2: or college or high school, and that just throws another
- 22:22Speaker 2: wrench into it all.
- 22:23Speaker 3: And I just think it's a confidence thing.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I think once he's able to get out there and
- 22:27Speaker 2: have some success and some sustained success at the big
- 22:30Speaker 2: league level, he has all the talent there, and I
- 22:33Speaker 2: think he's a big guy. He's got big power, he's
- 22:36Speaker 2: got a good arm, plays a good outfield. So I
- 22:38Speaker 2: think he's a really big piece for this team moving forward,
- 22:40Speaker 2: and I hope to see him get a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 2: chances of the rest of the year and just go
- 22:44Speaker 2: out there and have some success going into the offseason,
- 22:46Speaker 2: put the injury behind him, and really see what he's
- 22:49Speaker 2: able to do, because I just in your rookie year,
- 22:51Speaker 2: when you get hurt, that's got to be so tough
- 22:54Speaker 2: for a player to get over that fact and then
- 22:57Speaker 2: come back and try to get back into the flow
- 22:58Speaker 2: of things. And the worst part of it all is
- 23:00Speaker 2: I feel like right before he went to the IL,
- 23:02Speaker 2: he was playing the best baseball we had seen from
- 23:04Speaker 2: him this year, and then that that just felt like
- 23:08Speaker 2: such a you know, stop right there and then try
- 23:10Speaker 2: to pick it back up.
- 23:10Speaker 4: It's just really hard, and that's exactly what's gonna stay Brad.
- 23:14Speaker 4: You can go back to his numbers in May, look
- 23:16Speaker 4: at that, Look at his month to May.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Man he was building a ton of momentum.
- 23:20Speaker 4: The ops was well over eight hundred that month, but
- 23:23Speaker 4: unfortunately went down with the injury, missed a lot of time.
- 23:26Speaker 4: But you can tell that Craig Albernaz really likes him
- 23:29Speaker 4: and has a lot of confidence in him. We've seen
- 23:31Speaker 4: him lead off quite a few times of late. I
- 23:34Speaker 4: know Gunners had that spot most recently, but prior to that,
- 23:38Speaker 4: Beavers was leading off.
- 23:40Speaker 5: But Steve, that's one of those guys man like. Dylan
- 23:43Speaker 5: Beavers has not played many games at the major league level.
- 23:47Speaker 5: He came up late last year, got his feet wet,
- 23:49Speaker 5: still maintained rookie eligibility.
- 23:52Speaker 4: I want to see Dylan Beavers play every single day.
- 23:55Speaker 4: And there's not a position group on this team that
- 23:59Speaker 4: is more in flux heading into the offseason than the outfield.
- 24:03Speaker 4: We just don't have a ton of answers on who's
- 24:06Speaker 4: going to be in that opening day outfield so I
- 24:09Speaker 4: see this next forty forty one game stretch. That's why
- 24:12Speaker 4: I want to see Beaver's, I want to see Cowser.
- 24:14Speaker 4: I would love to see Bradfield get his feet wet
- 24:17Speaker 4: before it's all said and done.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe these forty one games will answer some questions
- 24:21Speaker 1: about Dylan because I think if we could put the
- 24:24Speaker 1: team management the truth serum, is he a big part
- 24:26Speaker 1: of your future? The answer would be yes. But there's
- 24:29Speaker 1: just enough doubt right now that you know, do they
- 24:32Speaker 1: need to add another big thumping outfielder. Maybe they do
- 24:36Speaker 1: to make sure they have that offense. So it's going
- 24:40Speaker 1: to be interesting to see how that all plays out.
- 24:42Speaker 1: But I think it is a big forty one games
- 24:44Speaker 1: for certain individuals. Yeah, and I think Dylan Beavers fits
- 24:47Speaker 1: that mold to really show what he can do. His
- 24:50Speaker 1: numbers were better last year after his call up than
- 24:53Speaker 1: they have been this year to this point, and we
- 24:55Speaker 1: touched on some reasons for that. So and Steve show
- 24:58Speaker 1: we hope he does great threat the way right.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Steve not Dan threw up And I was gonna
- 25:03Speaker 2: say this before. Also, is when you give these guys chances,
- 25:06Speaker 2: maybe somebody's gonna surprise you when you look at the
- 25:08Speaker 2: way this team has gone this entire year, look at
- 25:10Speaker 2: all the guys that have surprised Blaise Alexander, Lito Taveris.
- 25:13Speaker 2: At times when you give guys opportunity, you just never
- 25:16Speaker 2: know what's going to come of it. So I just
- 25:17Speaker 2: at this point it's like, why not That's the way
- 25:20Speaker 2: I would look at it, because you might find surprise.
- 25:22Speaker 2: You might find your starting centerfielder every single day against
- 25:25Speaker 2: righty's against lefties, and what a hole that would be
- 25:28Speaker 2: to feel for this team moving forward. And if they
- 25:31Speaker 2: get hot, maybe they help you get in the playoffs,
- 25:33Speaker 2: which would be an unbelievable surprise too. So it's just like,
- 25:36Speaker 2: I just feel like there's nothing to lose at this
- 25:37Speaker 2: point with playing these guys that you see being a
- 25:40Speaker 2: big part of this team moving forward.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, they already believe in the guys. It's not like
- 25:44Speaker 1: it just throwing them a life raft. Yeah, I just
- 25:46Speaker 1: to give them more play every day. See what he
- 25:49Speaker 1: can do against lefties and so forth. All right, let's
- 25:52Speaker 1: get to those minor league no to the moment here
- 25:54Speaker 1: on Birdland Territory.
- 25:57Speaker 9: Big Bad Morning Show, Benny and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 26:02Speaker 9: on YouTube weekdays six till six, search Baltimore one O
- 26:06Speaker 9: five seven the Fan. Subscribe for Daily Short's right to
- 26:09Speaker 9: your phone and never miss which you miss one O
- 26:12Speaker 9: five seven the Fan.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I think if they had to vote today for the
- 26:16Speaker 1: Jim Palmer Award Minor League Pitcher of the Year, it
- 26:19Speaker 1: might be a two horse race. Caden Hunter, Joseph Jerwick
- 26:23Speaker 1: some others would certainly be in that man. I watched
- 26:26Speaker 1: Jerwoh pitch last night on the on the laptop. He's
- 26:29Speaker 1: pitching at Redding six scoreless, one hit, he fans seven.
- 26:34Speaker 1: He's ninety one ninety four. He's not blowing them away.
- 26:36Speaker 1: At ninety eight. Change up is on point, secondaries, slider
- 26:41Speaker 1: and sweeper are really starting to come. He's now in
- 26:43Speaker 1: the top one hundred for Baseball America, number seventy eight.
- 26:47Speaker 1: And Brad we were talking before the show, the three
- 26:49Speaker 1: of us. We enjoy watching guys who aren't blowing hitters
- 26:52Speaker 1: away have success. Yeah, this kid is doing. Yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I love watching guys that know how to pitch and
- 26:59Speaker 2: know how to use their stuff. I don't want to
- 27:02Speaker 2: call it the right way, but just how to use
- 27:04Speaker 2: it effectively. It's just to me, there's nothing better than
- 27:07Speaker 2: watching those guys pitch because nowadays, I think fans are
- 27:10Speaker 2: so used to ninety eight to one hundred. When you
- 27:12Speaker 2: see somebody throw ninety one ninety four, you're like, oh,
- 27:15Speaker 2: he's kind of a he's described as a soft tosser.
- 27:18Speaker 2: But there's so many other ways to use your velocity
- 27:21Speaker 2: and seeing guys like that have success, to me, it's exciting,
- 27:24Speaker 2: and I think it's you can only look for things
- 27:26Speaker 2: to looking moving forward, you can look for bigger things
- 27:29Speaker 2: because if they get an extra tick in velocity, now
- 27:32Speaker 2: there's stuff goes through the roof. There's always a big
- 27:34Speaker 2: argument I have with guys I play with that do
- 27:36Speaker 2: you want stuff first or do you want you know,
- 27:39Speaker 2: pitchability first? And I would take the pitchability first over everything.
- 27:42Speaker 2: And nowadays they can teach stuff, and they can teach
- 27:45Speaker 2: you how to throw harder and that kind of thing.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Before they couldn't do that.
- 27:47Speaker 2: So I just love seeing guys that are that have success,
- 27:50Speaker 2: that know how to pitch without throwing one hundred miles
- 27:52Speaker 2: an hour every single pitch.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I know that there are some fans that you know,
- 27:58Speaker 4: roll their eyes when fans grabs put out. You know,
- 28:01Speaker 4: the second best farm system. Baseball America just updated their
- 28:05Speaker 4: farm systems yesterday.
- 28:06Speaker 5: The Oreo was one from fifteen to five.
- 28:09Speaker 4: That's a significant jump when they were fifteenth heading into
- 28:13Speaker 4: the All Star break and then five after the draft
- 28:16Speaker 4: and of course all of the trade deadline acquisitions that
- 28:20Speaker 4: the O's got. But Juwak came in at number three. Steve,
- 28:23Speaker 4: and we've been talking so much, especially of late, just
- 28:27Speaker 4: how pitching is the strength of this farm system right now,
- 28:31Speaker 4: which is a big one to eighty from four or
- 28:34Speaker 4: five years ago.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I think there are some real stars in pitching development
- 28:40Speaker 1: on the O's farm. I don't get to see much,
- 28:42Speaker 1: but Forrest Herman is their director of pitching development. I
- 28:45Speaker 1: think he's rock solid. I've been to Booie and Frederick
- 28:48Speaker 1: a lot this year and had some very wonderful chats
- 28:51Speaker 1: with pitching coaches like Jeremy Heilman and Jordi Henry, and
- 28:55Speaker 1: they really are sharp guys. When I talk to them,
- 28:59Speaker 1: I learned something about pitching. And when they tell me
- 29:01Speaker 1: how they work with jerwah As, they told me, hey,
- 29:05Speaker 1: we know it's a plus fastball and change up and
- 29:08Speaker 1: he's that's his bread and butter. But if this slider
- 29:11Speaker 1: and sweeper keep coming like they're coming, and now he's
- 29:14Speaker 1: got all kinds of weapons. And I could see last
- 29:17Speaker 1: night he started first time through with his bread and butter.
- 29:20Speaker 1: He worked it in. It was it was a great
- 29:22Speaker 1: development game. He got all his pitches in, he used
- 29:25Speaker 1: him in key moments, and he was just good throughout.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I think Triple A should be calling this kid who's
- 29:31Speaker 1: at one hundred twelve innings, So we'll see if that
- 29:33Speaker 1: factors in here.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and Steve, I would say, I think I can
- 29:37Speaker 2: understand the Orioles fans frustration with hearing about the top
- 29:40Speaker 2: drift or the top farm system, but I think it's
- 29:43Speaker 2: a little different this time around. And I think that
- 29:46Speaker 2: for two reasons. One is, like we've talked about, it's
- 29:49Speaker 2: pitching heavy. As before, position players really kind of headed
- 29:52Speaker 2: that list. And second of all is you're kind of
- 29:54Speaker 2: looking for a couple pieces to help this major league roster,
- 29:57Speaker 2: not a full roster like it was before when they
- 30:00Speaker 2: were doing their full on rebuild. So I think there
- 30:02Speaker 2: should be a little bit more excitement when it comes
- 30:05Speaker 2: to the minor league system being ranked higher, just because
- 30:09Speaker 2: we know the major league roster has a lot of
- 30:11Speaker 2: pieces to help the team win, and I think you
- 30:14Speaker 2: just need to find a few pieces to fill in
- 30:15Speaker 2: as where before it was a full teardown, you're trying
- 30:18Speaker 2: to find a whole team, and that's as we know,
- 30:20Speaker 2: it can be tricky because not every guy is going
- 30:23Speaker 2: to develop into a big leaguer. But if you can
- 30:24Speaker 2: get two to three four guys that are big pieces
- 30:27Speaker 2: for the big league team, that's going to make a
- 30:29Speaker 2: huge difference.
- 30:30Speaker 3: And that's why I feel like this time around is
- 30:32Speaker 3: a little bit different.
- 30:33Speaker 4: No, I think it's a good point, Brad, And I'd
- 30:36Speaker 4: also say this, and I understand the fans frustration. I
- 30:39Speaker 4: understand that obviously we were saying it probably was best
- 30:44Speaker 4: to sell, and I think it's proven kind of in
- 30:46Speaker 4: this recent stretch that Mike made the right decision. It
- 30:49Speaker 4: stinks that the Orioles were in that position. Both things
- 30:51Speaker 4: can be true. I will grant you that, but you
- 30:54Speaker 4: would much much much rather, Steve, heading into this offseason
- 30:59Speaker 4: have the fifth best farm system according to Baseball America
- 31:02Speaker 4: than the twenty fifth best farm system, because you in
- 31:06Speaker 4: a much better position for success. Not all of these
- 31:10Speaker 4: kids are gonna pan out. We you know, you saw
- 31:12Speaker 4: that the last go around. But pitching is like people
- 31:18Speaker 4: covet that. You know, teams are going to yes, these
- 31:21Speaker 4: guys on this farm were the old are going to
- 31:24Speaker 4: trade some of these guys to acquire major league talents.
- 31:27Speaker 4: So it's much better going in with a good farm
- 31:30Speaker 4: system than a bead and then you're really feeling bad
- 31:33Speaker 4: about the future process.
- 31:35Speaker 1: We'll just remember the excitement about d L. Hall and Grayson,
- 31:38Speaker 1: who are top one hundred pitching prospects. There was so
- 31:42Speaker 1: much excitement about them. And the Oils have two top
- 31:44Speaker 1: one hundred pitching prospects now, Ironston and Jerwah and I
- 31:48Speaker 1: think Cayden Hunter is gonna mentioned give them three and
- 31:51Speaker 1: there might be a fourth. So that is exciting, believe me.
- 31:54Speaker 1: That's the you know, baseball wants pitching prospects all thirty teams.
- 31:59Speaker 1: The Oils have it. If you have eight you like
- 32:01Speaker 1: and you trade to you still have six you like.
- 32:04Speaker 1: So I mean, it's just gonna help this team, not
- 32:07Speaker 1: today but down the road. And I think that's what
- 32:10Speaker 1: frustrates the bands. They want to help to shay these
- 32:13Speaker 1: guys can't help them today, but they're doing their best
- 32:16Speaker 1: to help them, you know, in the future. So great
- 32:19Speaker 1: discussion on that guy's another good show in the books
- 32:22Speaker 1: here on Birdland Territory. Thanks to Birdland for getting us
- 32:25Speaker 1: to a thousand subscribers. We all took laps around our
- 32:28Speaker 1: yard and spite at eleven o'clock the other night. We're
- 32:32Speaker 1: excited for that, and that just means people keep showing
- 32:35Speaker 1: support of our show man. That means so much to
- 32:38Speaker 1: us because, as you guys can tell, we put a
- 32:40Speaker 1: lot into this and you're making sure we get a
- 32:43Speaker 1: lot out of it. So pretty cool, guys, to get
- 32:47Speaker 1: one thousand, now on to ten thousand. That's gonna take
- 32:50Speaker 1: a few weeks at least. All right, everybody, thanks for
- 32:54Speaker 1: watching today and we'll see you next time on Birdland Territory.
