- 1:26Speaker 9: trip to Big Lake as they call it, in that
- 1:29Speaker 9: area south of Lake Charles in Hackberry.
- 1:34Speaker 8: We'll be doing that.
- 1:36Speaker 9: We've got animal attack stories for you. You know that
- 1:39Speaker 9: full moon next week, we'll have a lot of them
- 1:42Speaker 9: because animals become extra nasty during full moon, as do people.
- 1:47Speaker 9: By the way, that's fact. Monday Writers Roundtable will recap
- 1:54Speaker 9: the weekend, including the a in baseball series with Vanderbilt
- 2:00Speaker 9: will be weather windows. I believe to get all three
- 2:02Speaker 9: games in. Researchers at Florida Atlantic University have developed a
- 2:09Speaker 9: deterrent that reduces shark bycatch on long lines by as
- 2:14Speaker 9: much as seventy percent without affecting catches of target species.
- 2:22Speaker 9: Now what people are asking is if that technology could
- 2:25Speaker 9: be used to deter recreational catches and shark depredation, which
- 2:30Speaker 9: has come, as we've mentioned many times, a huge issue
- 2:35Speaker 9: with recreational fishermen in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
- 2:41Speaker 9: The deterrent works by pairing zinc and graphite in seawater
- 2:46Speaker 9: to produce a small electric field through a chemical reaction.
- 2:51Speaker 9: Sharks are extremely sensitive to electricity and avoid treated hooks.
- 2:57Speaker 9: In field trials off the Florida Panhandled and the Atlantic
- 3:00Speaker 9: off Massachusetts Longline, bycatch of sharks reduced between sixty two
- 3:06Speaker 9: and seventy percent, while target catches of target species like
- 3:12Speaker 9: tuna and swordfish were unaffected. Stephen Kajura, PhD. Says zinc
- 3:20Speaker 9: and graphite are inexpensive, widely available, and already familiar to
- 3:27Speaker 9: fishermen because zinc is commonly used to prevent corrosion on boats.
- 3:33Speaker 9: This means it could be adopted quickly and cost effectively,
- 3:36Speaker 9: providing a real solution to reduce shark bycatch while supporting
- 3:42Speaker 9: sustainable fisheries. The technology might be the answer to shark
- 3:49Speaker 9: bycatching commercial fisheries. Easy to imagine it making its way
- 3:53Speaker 9: to recreational fishing in some form like zinc and graphite
- 4:00Speaker 9: umbags for instance, that would keep shark away. That's pretty cool,
- 4:06Speaker 9: I mean unnatural way to do that. We will keep
- 4:09Speaker 9: our eye on that because that sounds like it could
- 4:13Speaker 9: be a huge breakthrough for recreational fishermen who a lot
- 4:21Speaker 9: of times just have to leave an area. I mean,
- 4:24Speaker 9: I've been there, I've done that. We've had to leave
- 4:27Speaker 9: too many sharks several times, all right. A fearless, half blind,
- 4:38Speaker 9: elderly dog was almost killed saving her family and dozens
- 4:45Speaker 9: of farm animals from a hungry bear that had broken
- 4:49Speaker 9: into the family's home. The twelve year old pooch, Honey,
- 4:54Speaker 9: was barely recognizable because of the unbelievable swelling to her
- 4:59Speaker 9: body and face from battling the bear, which was hungry
- 5:03Speaker 9: and fresh out of hibernation, according to the owners and
- 5:07Speaker 9: the animal rescue that treated the dog, Denise Martinez telling
- 5:13Speaker 9: Albuquerque station KO before, she's our little savior. She's been
- 5:19Speaker 9: nicknamed the bear slayer, and we've just come to find
- 5:22Speaker 9: out that the bear slayer is afraid of the vacuum cleaner.
- 5:25Speaker 8: She joked.
- 5:27Speaker 9: The bear crept onto the family's property in Cordova, New Mexico,
- 5:34Speaker 9: last month and tried to break into the chicken coop
- 5:38Speaker 9: for a quick snack, but Honey wasn't having any of it.
- 5:44Speaker 9: We'll never know exactly how it unfolded in the dark
- 5:47Speaker 9: of that night, but we know this Honey stood her
- 5:50Speaker 9: ground against something she had no business fighting, said the
- 5:54Speaker 9: Humane Animal Clinic of Espanola. She took the hits so
- 5:59Speaker 9: no one else would have to, and she drove a
- 6:01Speaker 9: predator away from everything she loves.
- 6:04Speaker 8: Does this sound just never mind?
- 6:07Speaker 9: Surveillance video later showed Honey had fended off the bear
- 6:13Speaker 9: multiple times. The family didn't know it until the next morning,
- 6:17Speaker 9: when the dog was found lying in the driveway. Her
- 6:19Speaker 9: whole neck was ripped from the back all the way down,
- 6:22Speaker 9: said Leanna Martinez. They found evidence that a bear had
- 6:26Speaker 9: been around the property, including cloth scratches on fences and trees.
- 6:31Speaker 9: The Martinez family rushed the dog to an emergency care center.
- 6:35Speaker 9: Because of the high cost, they turned to Espanola's Humane's
- 6:40Speaker 9: Urgent Care Clinic. Honey's face was so swollen, I mean
- 6:44Speaker 9: you couldn't even tell features in her face, said Mattie
- 6:47Speaker 9: Allen of the clinic. The rescue said Honey's catastrophic injuries
- 6:53Speaker 9: including a degloving wound from her neck to her face,
- 6:58Speaker 9: puncture wounds, unbelievable bruising and swelling. She continues to recover
- 7:04Speaker 9: after going surgeries to stitch her back up. She's been
- 7:09Speaker 9: taking our medicine cult like a champ and shown a
- 7:12Speaker 9: quiet stubborn courage while resting with other animals. Honey didn't
- 7:19Speaker 9: just survive, said the Humane Society. She stood between her
- 7:23Speaker 9: family in danger and chose them over and over again.
- 7:27Speaker 9: And because of her family's love a community who cares.
- 7:30Speaker 9: In a little bit of honey badger badassery, this half blind,
- 7:36Speaker 9: sassy senior is still here. I don't know who wrote this,
- 7:41Speaker 9: but I like it. Honey, Good for you, I mean
- 7:47Speaker 9: seriously good for you.
- 7:50Speaker 8: A recent incident.
- 7:52Speaker 9: Involving a coyote attacking a man and his dog in Poughkeepsie,
- 7:56Speaker 9: New York. That coyote, which appeared sick and exhibiting strange behavior,
- 8:03Speaker 9: approached Councilman Evren Minist and his dog Harvey while they
- 8:08Speaker 9: were walking in College Hill Park. Minist managed to scare
- 8:13Speaker 9: the coyote away, but it continue to pose a threat
- 8:15Speaker 9: until animal control arrived and you euthanized it. So this
- 8:20Speaker 9: story has a happy ending. Suspecting that it was rabid,
- 8:24Speaker 9: it raised concerns about wildlife interactions in urban areas and
- 8:30Speaker 9: the safety of residents and pats. Hey, they're in New York,
- 8:35Speaker 9: so they probably can't carry a gun, or own a gun,
- 8:38Speaker 9: or even say the word gun.
- 8:41Speaker 8: But here in Texas.
- 8:44Speaker 9: You know, we had a governor that pulled this pistol
- 8:46Speaker 9: on a coyote during a walk, and by gosh, I
- 8:51Speaker 9: encourage all of you to do the same thing.
- 8:53Speaker 8: Get them before they get you.
- 8:59Speaker 9: In Germany, a wolf bit a woman in a shopping
- 9:04Speaker 9: area in Hamburg. Well, I'd hate to get bit in
- 9:08Speaker 9: the shopping area. That could be before it was pulled
- 9:12Speaker 9: out of a lake and what believed to be the
- 9:15Speaker 9: first such a take tax its wolves returned to the
- 9:19Speaker 9: country thirty years ago. The Fire Service said the woman
- 9:23Speaker 9: was taking a Hamburg hospital after the unusual encounter. There
- 9:28Speaker 9: was no immediate information on her condition. Police didn't detail
- 9:32Speaker 9: where she was bitten. I thought it was in a
- 9:35Speaker 9: shopping area, and also wasn't clear what led to the attack,
- 9:38Speaker 9: which took place in the shopping area in altona station
- 9:41Speaker 9: west of Berlin.
- 9:43Speaker 8: Late Monday evening. Officers hauled the wolf.
- 9:46Speaker 9: Out of a lake in downtown Hamburg following calls alerting
- 9:51Speaker 9: them to sighting the animal there. Local media reported was
- 9:55Speaker 9: taken to an enclosure on the outskirts of the city
- 9:59Speaker 9: and to debt now I added that part I don't
- 10:03Speaker 9: think there's a happy ending here officials believe it's likely
- 10:06Speaker 9: the wolf involved was the same one that was sighted
- 10:10Speaker 9: in an outer suburb a few days before that. Experts
- 10:14Speaker 9: believe the animals a young wolf searching for a territory
- 10:17Speaker 9: of its own and accidentally wandered into the city. Experts
- 10:23Speaker 9: believe the animal let's see, wolves generally avoid contact with people. Yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 9: we've heard that before. Germany's Federal Agency for Nature Conservation
- 10:33Speaker 9: said it was the first time a person was known
- 10:36Speaker 9: to have been attacked by a wild wolf since the
- 10:38Speaker 9: animals reappeared in the country after one hundred and fifty
- 10:43Speaker 9: year absence.
- 10:45Speaker 8: Wolves are strictly protected. See that's the.
- 10:50Speaker 9: Problem, isn't it get them before they get you? Our
- 10:56Speaker 9: Animals attack segment is brought to you by Shulty.
- 11:00Speaker 8: Home of the Bulletproof Roof Guarantee.
- 11:04Speaker 4: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 11:06Speaker 4: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 11:08Speaker 4: I found Shorlty Roofing and poy, I'm glad I did.
- 11:11Speaker 4: The folks at Shulty guided me every step of the way.
- 11:14Speaker 4: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 11:16Speaker 4: out of pocket cost would be after insurance. They took
- 11:19Speaker 4: the complication out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They
- 11:22Speaker 4: took off the damage roof, put on the new roof,
- 11:25Speaker 4: did all the cleanup, and I had my new roof
- 11:27Speaker 4: in one day.
- 11:30Speaker 8: The whole by the bullet roof.
- 11:35Speaker 9: We're in Hackberry, Louisiana, at Cajun Paradise Lodge with Captain
- 11:40Speaker 9: Kevin Broussard, after a day on big lake, just off
- 11:44Speaker 9: a big lake, and it was just an incredible day
- 11:47Speaker 9: of fishing. You had texted me two days ago because
- 11:49Speaker 9: we'd had a bad front come in. You didn't know
- 11:51Speaker 9: what the fishing was going to be like post front,
- 11:54Speaker 9: what the wind was going to be doing. It didn't
- 11:58Speaker 9: really matter today what the wind was doing, because the
- 12:00Speaker 9: fish were eating.
- 12:01Speaker 10: Yeah, it really bounced back good. See a lot of
- 12:03Speaker 10: times this time of year, of course, what I call
- 12:05Speaker 10: late spring or mid spring. Every now and then you
- 12:08Speaker 10: get a big one I call you know, big northern
- 12:10Speaker 10: for this time of year. Well, two days ago it
- 12:11Speaker 10: was thirty two degrees, the wind was blowing north northwest
- 12:14Speaker 10: at twenty to thirty knots. Not great fishing, well, no,
- 12:17Speaker 10: it just it drops the water out, it muddies it up.
- 12:20Speaker 10: But then like that night, it turned back light south,
- 12:23Speaker 10: it started warming back up, and I text you, I said, look,
- 12:26Speaker 10: I'm not sure what to expect, you know, being we're
- 12:28Speaker 10: only a couple of days behind this. And man, we
- 12:30Speaker 10: went out today like you said, and man, started off,
- 12:33Speaker 10: we got our limited reds, threw back some big ones,
- 12:35Speaker 10: threw back a bunch of.
- 12:36Speaker 9: Keeping big woods. I mean that one real big one.
- 12:39Speaker 10: Yeah, we won't say who, but your better half, did
- 12:42Speaker 10: you know that you better have half? Dick has won twenty.
- 12:45Speaker 9: Five how many spots?
- 12:46Speaker 11: I want to say that twenty five spots.
- 12:48Speaker 9: Yeah, And but then that was about twenty five pounds.
- 12:52Speaker 11: Yeah, it was at least twenty five pounds.
- 12:53Speaker 10: And then we then we went on to targets and
- 12:55Speaker 10: trout and flounder, and we all caught our slams. We
- 12:58Speaker 10: ended up with I think fourteen flounder for the day,
- 13:01Speaker 10: twenty one trout. So it ended up being a very
- 13:03Speaker 10: very productive day for the conditions, you know, just being two.
- 13:06Speaker 9: I think I was productive for no matter the conditions.
- 13:08Speaker 9: But but that last stop we made, and I wouldn't
- 13:12Speaker 9: have stayed there.
- 13:13Speaker 10: Yeah, we pulled up and we were running in there.
- 13:16Speaker 10: I told you so, Well, this time of year, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 10: the fish are usually there. But we pulled in water
- 13:21Speaker 10: was moving kind of hard, and the water was actually
- 13:23Speaker 10: dirty or what we considered dirty.
- 13:25Speaker 9: And like you know, we and only my wife was
- 13:28Speaker 9: catching fish.
- 13:29Speaker 10: She caught three fish in about ten fifteen minutes, and
- 13:31Speaker 10: I was like, well, there's some here. And then all
- 13:33Speaker 10: of a sudden we kind of figured them out. And
- 13:35Speaker 10: I mean we ended up catching thirteen trout, good trout, yeah, oh,
- 13:38Speaker 10: a very nice trout, several two pound or two and
- 13:40Speaker 10: a halfs. We caught some keeper reds, some throwback reds,
- 13:44Speaker 10: and we caught a couple more flounder to go in
- 13:46Speaker 10: the box there.
- 13:47Speaker 9: So and we added, that's the biggest drama I've been
- 13:50Speaker 9: a part of. I know you've seen them large because
- 13:52Speaker 9: you've grown up down here, but that we asked them
- 13:55Speaker 9: matter what forty five easy?
- 13:56Speaker 10: It was probably at least forty five pounds. It was well,
- 13:59Speaker 10: you know, thirty long fish.
- 14:01Speaker 11: Uh. And and you had one on in the probably
- 14:03Speaker 11: in the twenties today. Uh.
- 14:05Speaker 10: You know, it was just man honestly for the for
- 14:08Speaker 10: like I said, being little post front, it was a
- 14:10Speaker 10: great day of fishing.
- 14:11Speaker 9: Well, this is the second time you if you warned
- 14:13Speaker 9: me about weather, and I've come anyway because you know,
- 14:16Speaker 9: you got a fish where you can. And I've been
- 14:17Speaker 9: watching the weather and it looked okay, not not great,
- 14:21Speaker 9: but okay a post front.
- 14:23Speaker 11: Uh.
- 14:24Speaker 9: And the last time I told you I never would
- 14:26Speaker 9: have fished. I got down here. If storm came through
- 14:28Speaker 9: big lake look like brown chocolate. But we caught fish
- 14:31Speaker 9: that day, Yes, sir.
- 14:33Speaker 11: You know, like you said, you.
- 14:35Speaker 9: Have to adapt to the conditions, do you not.
- 14:37Speaker 10: Yeah, basically that day that you know you're talking about,
- 14:39Speaker 10: when the water was real dirty, we went real shallow.
- 14:41Speaker 11: We fished windy points, windy banks.
- 14:44Speaker 6: Uh.
- 14:44Speaker 10: We were we were throwing shrimp under a cork about
- 14:46Speaker 10: a foot and a half deep, and we just slayed
- 14:48Speaker 10: the red fish that day and today most of these
- 14:52Speaker 10: fish were eating literal bait fish. When I tell people
- 14:56Speaker 10: aby are inch long, they're you know they're they don't
- 14:58Speaker 10: they can't comprehend that. But I mean, like some of
- 15:00Speaker 10: these fish would have hundreds of these little fish in there.
- 15:03Speaker 10: So we had to throw like really really small plastic you.
- 15:07Speaker 9: Could get small enough to replicate what they're is when
- 15:09Speaker 9: you can't close.
- 15:10Speaker 11: I got the smallest thing that I could buy.
- 15:11Speaker 10: It would still fit on a hook and it worked, Yes, sir,
- 15:13Speaker 10: we did very well with it, did very well.
- 15:15Speaker 9: I mean it's hard to replicate and you don't believe
- 15:18Speaker 9: they're eating that small a fish, but they're gorging themselves.
- 15:21Speaker 10: And that's what's mainly happening right now is that you know,
- 15:24Speaker 10: everything's hatching. It's the springtime. It's like bass respawning on
- 15:27Speaker 10: your fresh water. Your shadow are having their their spawn.
- 15:31Speaker 10: I'm guessing maybe you know some trowler already spawning. Anyway,
- 15:35Speaker 10: there's just millions and little with probably billions of these
- 15:38Speaker 10: little bitty fry everywhere.
- 15:40Speaker 9: And they're showering everywhere like you'll see offshore you know,
- 15:45Speaker 9: would sell fish or chasing bait. I mean, they're just
- 15:48Speaker 9: showering everywhere. So you know there have to be fish around.
- 15:51Speaker 11: Oh yeah, that's one thing you could tell.
- 15:53Speaker 10: Like this morning, we actually saw several red fish just
- 15:56Speaker 10: crushing bait.
- 15:57Speaker 9: Right on the shore line, but we couldn't get them
- 15:59Speaker 9: to eat.
- 15:59Speaker 11: We were we were throwing what he was hungry for.
- 16:02Speaker 10: You know, we ended up adapting and changing our style
- 16:05Speaker 10: a little bit, and that's whenever we started catching them.
- 16:07Speaker 9: It's always hungry for shrimp.
- 16:08Speaker 11: Oh they will always either shrimp or golf. You know
- 16:11Speaker 11: they don't turn down golf, yes, but uh, you.
- 16:13Speaker 10: Know it's just blessing in Like the next couple of
- 16:15Speaker 10: weeks looks really good down here.
- 16:17Speaker 11: We've got warm weather.
- 16:18Speaker 10: We're gonna get back into some normal tides, some southerly winds.
- 16:21Speaker 10: You know, we don't like the southwest as much. But hey,
- 16:24Speaker 10: as long as if you know you can do anything
- 16:26Speaker 10: close to what we did today on an average day,
- 16:29Speaker 10: I'd be happy every day of the week.
- 16:30Speaker 9: I don't think this was an average day for not
- 16:32Speaker 9: for us anyway, it was. It was incredible when you
- 16:35Speaker 9: have three people in the boat and they all catch
- 16:37Speaker 9: what we call the in short slam with with flounder,
- 16:40Speaker 9: at trout and redfish. I don't care how many. I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 9: you catch one slam with those three fish, you've had
- 16:46Speaker 9: in my mind, you've had a day.
- 16:47Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 16:47Speaker 10: And I mean, like you said, we all caught plenty
- 16:49Speaker 10: of red fish we threw back.
- 16:51Speaker 9: We all, yeah, well, you had a limit, so we
- 16:53Speaker 9: kept throwing.
- 16:54Speaker 11: Fishing twenty back.
- 16:55Speaker 10: We probably well, probably more than that because the last
- 16:57Speaker 10: spot we caught seven or eight, so I would say
- 16:58Speaker 10: we probably threw back close to thirty red fish today,
- 17:00Speaker 10: most of.
- 17:01Speaker 11: Them in the slot.
- 17:01Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm unbelievable. And you're throwing these fish pack, which
- 17:04Speaker 9: is great. We're glad to do that because we already
- 17:06Speaker 9: had our limit. And I want to talk to you
- 17:08Speaker 9: a little bit about that because they have actually changed
- 17:12Speaker 9: the limit. I never thought they'd do it in the
- 17:14Speaker 9: state of Louisiana, but they have changed trout and redfish,
- 17:17Speaker 9: have they not?
- 17:18Speaker 11: Yes, sir, our red fish is four red fish.
- 17:20Speaker 9: Per person, but not the guide anymore.
- 17:23Speaker 10: Keep a guide's limit, but there's eighteen to twenty seven inches.
- 17:26Speaker 10: And the other rule change they made was no more
- 17:29Speaker 10: over twenty seven which normally we don't have a problem
- 17:31Speaker 10: throwing those back anyway. And then on the trout they
- 17:34Speaker 10: went to thirteen inches fifteen a person, but no guide limit.
- 17:38Speaker 9: So from twelve up to thirteen.
- 17:41Speaker 10: Yeah, they moved it up one inch, and they have
- 17:43Speaker 10: a maximum only two. They don't have a maximum, but
- 17:46Speaker 10: you're only left two per person over twenty. So if
- 17:49Speaker 10: you get into a lot of those three to five pounders,
- 17:51Speaker 10: you got to throw a.
- 17:51Speaker 11: Lot of those backs.
- 17:52Speaker 9: So you're already seeing some bigger trouts show up. If
- 17:55Speaker 9: I'm hearing you correctly, it hasn't, and I know in
- 17:59Speaker 9: Texas it did not take long when they instituted that
- 18:02Speaker 9: seemed to me the quality of fish just immediately you
- 18:06Speaker 9: started catching better fishing. I think you're seeing that.
- 18:08Speaker 11: We're seeing that also.
- 18:09Speaker 10: But on the other hand, we have such a vast
- 18:12Speaker 10: estuary that is bountiful with bait and stuff. We still
- 18:16Speaker 10: see those days when you can catch one hundred and
- 18:18Speaker 10: ten to twelve inures.
- 18:19Speaker 11: You know, it's just you got to move, you know
- 18:21Speaker 11: what I mean.
- 18:22Speaker 10: You're like, Okay, we've only putting one or two in
- 18:23Speaker 10: the box and they're barely thirteen. And the people are like, man,
- 18:26Speaker 10: we're catching them every cass.
- 18:27Speaker 9: Up, you know, speaking of bountiful marshes. You're telling me
- 18:32Speaker 9: stuff's going on down here. That's just sickening to all
- 18:35Speaker 9: of us who care about and I don't care what
- 18:40Speaker 9: people say. Fishermen are the best environmentalists because they need
- 18:43Speaker 9: to protect what, you know, the resources. We've got oil
- 18:47Speaker 9: and gas companies down here that aren't doing that right now.
- 18:49Speaker 10: Oh it's I mean, they're looking out for them, and
- 18:52Speaker 10: it's unfortunate. You know, if the average commercial fish or
- 18:56Speaker 10: shrimp or crabber down here is seeing the effects of
- 18:59Speaker 10: the ellen plants. Yes, the fish is still phenomenal, just because,
- 19:03Speaker 10: like I said, we're blessed to have a vast estuary.
- 19:05Speaker 10: But if they keep doing what they're doing, we're losing
- 19:09Speaker 10: tons of marsh land because they're bringing out marsh equipment
- 19:13Speaker 10: and they're building levees around tens of thousands of acres
- 19:17Speaker 10: of fishable water. And it's also where shrimp, crabs, finfish
- 19:22Speaker 10: go in there offspring and summer to grow. And they're
- 19:26Speaker 10: putting levees around there, and they're pumping dread spoil in there.
- 19:29Speaker 10: And of course the way they get away with it
- 19:32Speaker 10: or do it, is they say, oh, it's marsh restoration.
- 19:36Speaker 10: Well technically, yeah, it is marsh restoration. But they're killing
- 19:39Speaker 10: off tens of thousands of acres of Bible fishing.
- 19:43Speaker 11: You know, you.
- 19:44Speaker 9: Estimated twenty thousand acres right now.
- 19:46Speaker 10: Yeah, that one area that I showed you today in
- 19:49Speaker 10: that marsh is at least twenty thousand.
- 19:50Speaker 9: They have orange buoys across say you can't go there
- 19:52Speaker 9: and fish anymore.
- 19:53Speaker 10: Yeah, And I mean, like that one area, it's really
- 19:56Speaker 10: it's loud to fish because there's constant airboat traffic all day.
- 20:00Speaker 9: I want to talk about that, because we saw the
- 20:03Speaker 9: saber boat come into our area a couple of times,
- 20:06Speaker 9: and you've said, they come in and they take pictures
- 20:09Speaker 9: of you fishing, and we think it's to prove to
- 20:13Speaker 9: the companies and the government that hey, they're still catching fish,
- 20:17Speaker 9: we're not hurting anything.
- 20:19Speaker 10: Yeah, And I mean it's like I'm not back in
- 20:21Speaker 10: this area every day, but the days i'm back there,
- 20:24Speaker 10: every single time, these airboats will go over a mile
- 20:27Speaker 10: out of their way, come up to within a hundred
- 20:30Speaker 10: yards of you, kill it, video, take pictures. I've had
- 20:33Speaker 10: them fly drone over us and then they turn around
- 20:37Speaker 10: and leave. As soon as they turn around, they hammer
- 20:39Speaker 10: that airboat and it's loud, you know what I mean,
- 20:41Speaker 10: and it.
- 20:41Speaker 11: Books the fish.
- 20:43Speaker 9: But they didn't do the second time today you took
- 20:46Speaker 9: pictures of them and they idled out of our blade
- 20:50Speaker 9: where we were.
- 20:51Speaker 10: That's exactly correct, and it's just, you know, it's a
- 20:53Speaker 10: sad thing going on because they're just trying to justify
- 20:56Speaker 10: what they're doing.
- 20:57Speaker 11: And then you know, like I said in your.
- 20:59Speaker 10: Commerci shrimpers, crabbers, oyster fishermen, that's the ones that's really suffered.
- 21:04Speaker 10: I mean, yes, the guides will see in effect, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 10: maybe not as much, but that's the ones that it's
- 21:09Speaker 10: hurting because that's their livelihood.
- 21:10Speaker 9: They've been They don't have to do it that way.
- 21:12Speaker 10: No, There's there's plenty of areas they can pump that stuff.
- 21:16Speaker 10: And like like me and you talk, there's plenty of
- 21:18Speaker 10: dry ground since they're building levees anyway. Just build a
- 21:21Speaker 10: higher levee there, pump it, put in your filtration pipes
- 21:24Speaker 10: to where you'll actually keep your mud in there, your
- 21:26Speaker 10: water will filter out, you know. So there is ways
- 21:29Speaker 10: it can be done done and they have done it
- 21:31Speaker 10: like that in the past, but now that they've got
- 21:33Speaker 10: access to this marshal land, they're like, oh, well, we're
- 21:35Speaker 10: just gonna fill it up.
- 21:37Speaker 9: Yeah. It's it's it's sad. It's it's a sad site
- 21:40Speaker 9: to watch them working. And I don't uh, I don't
- 21:44Speaker 9: know if there's enough people with enough power to speak up,
- 21:47Speaker 9: but usually when enough people do speak up, at least
- 21:51Speaker 9: you get somebody's attention.
- 21:52Speaker 11: Yeah, And it's like.
- 21:53Speaker 10: You know that whenever the Cameron Parrish Police Jury has
- 21:56Speaker 10: their meetings, of course, the local you know, commercial fishermen
- 22:00Speaker 10: go and cry on her ear, but they don't do
- 22:02Speaker 10: any they haven't done anything yet because they're catering to
- 22:04Speaker 10: the billion dollar LNG industry.
- 22:08Speaker 9: And let's make no mistake, there's a lot of jobs
- 22:11Speaker 9: as a result of that around here.
- 22:13Speaker 11: It is.
- 22:13Speaker 10: It is booming for economy in Cameron Parish and Kalkashu
- 22:17Speaker 10: Parish here in southwest Louisiana. But the people that are suffering,
- 22:21Speaker 10: like I said, it is a local commercial shrimp. I
- 22:24Speaker 10: mean there's people that says all they've known if they've
- 22:26Speaker 10: shrimped fish and crabbed their whole life, making a living
- 22:29Speaker 10: for their family, and now they can't do it anyway.
- 22:31Speaker 9: Well, I had four to five dollars a gallon gas
- 22:33Speaker 9: at this point when we're talking, it's hard enough to
- 22:36Speaker 9: break even.
- 22:36Speaker 10: Well, like right now, on a guide trip I put
- 22:39Speaker 10: like I was telling you, I think I put fifty
- 22:40Speaker 10: two gallons in the boat the other day and that's
- 22:42Speaker 10: like four trips, three trips, But it ended up being
- 22:45Speaker 10: almost three hundred dollars because that's the price of fuel
- 22:47Speaker 10: on the water right now.
- 22:49Speaker 11: So you know you've.
- 22:49Speaker 10: Lived through this before, back a few years back.
- 22:53Speaker 11: It was high and outrageous, but you know you have to.
- 22:56Speaker 9: Pass out on to your customers because you can't. Again,
- 22:59Speaker 9: you can't lose money going and taking people fishing.
- 23:02Speaker 10: No, it's just, you know, it's a sad thing because
- 23:05Speaker 10: some people, you know, at this day and age, the
- 23:07Speaker 10: average guide on Big Lake charges eight hundred a day
- 23:10Speaker 10: plus live bait.
- 23:11Speaker 11: Well, some people.
- 23:13Speaker 10: Honestly can't afford that, you know, they're they're like, well, man,
- 23:15Speaker 10: let me, you know, save up a little while, or
- 23:17Speaker 10: try to find a couple buddies and we'll split it,
- 23:19Speaker 10: you know, and break the cost down as much as
- 23:20Speaker 10: you can. And with the price of fuel going up
- 23:23Speaker 10: and bait by the way, you know, live bait goes
- 23:26Speaker 10: up every year.
- 23:27Speaker 9: You know, that costs a lot of fuel to catch
- 23:29Speaker 9: the live bait.
- 23:30Speaker 10: That's exactly right. They're having to charge more because they're
- 23:32Speaker 10: spending more. Yeah, they pass it on to us. And unfortunately,
- 23:36Speaker 10: like you said, if we're going to stay in this business,
- 23:37Speaker 10: we have to pass it on.
- 23:38Speaker 9: So let's talk about the lodge. It was redone several
- 23:43Speaker 9: years ago because you had back to back hurricanes come
- 23:45Speaker 9: in and wipe everything out. And tell our listeners how
- 23:50Speaker 9: many people you accommodate there, and then if there's more
- 23:53Speaker 9: than that. I know you have friends with lodges and
- 23:55Speaker 9: you can accommodate a lot of people with a lot
- 23:57Speaker 9: of different guides.
- 23:58Speaker 10: Yes, sir, My personal large sleeps nine's three bedroom, two bath.
- 24:03Speaker 11: It's got a huge screened in area downstairs where they late. Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 10: Yeah, they play cornhole, big screen TV to watch your
- 24:08Speaker 10: sports and the biggest thing is screened in, so you know,
- 24:11Speaker 10: you don't have to fight the mosquitos. The food's good,
- 24:14Speaker 10: oh yeah, and of course my wife or Ernie, always
- 24:16Speaker 10: puts on a good spread of food. And uh, but
- 24:18Speaker 10: like we have several groups of twenty to twenty five
- 24:21Speaker 10: coming in this year, and like you said, I rent
- 24:22Speaker 10: a camp across the canal. I rent one about two
- 24:24Speaker 10: hundred yards down the road. And uh, you know, we've
- 24:27Speaker 10: got plenty of guys that are, you know, well experienced
- 24:30Speaker 10: and know how to take care of people.
- 24:31Speaker 11: Know how to catch fish.
- 24:32Speaker 9: And you're not gonna let them work for you if
- 24:34Speaker 9: they don't.
- 24:34Speaker 10: Oh know, if they if you get those guys that
- 24:36Speaker 10: just want to sit there all day and happy, not
- 24:38Speaker 10: catching fish, he's not gonna be a guy for me.
- 24:41Speaker 11: At least run around and try you know.
- 24:44Speaker 9: This, This guy does that better than anyone, and this
- 24:47Speaker 9: place is just phenomenal. So whether you're coming for a night,
- 24:50Speaker 9: a weekend, a week with you know, a company that
- 24:55Speaker 9: and clients, he can accommodate from from one as you
- 25:00Speaker 9: as many folks as can come down.
- 25:02Speaker 10: Yes, sir, that's why it's one of our specialties, is
- 25:04Speaker 10: the corporate packages.
- 25:05Speaker 11: But we don't mind the people just driving in for
- 25:07Speaker 11: a day trip.
- 25:08Speaker 9: You know, well he did today.
- 25:09Speaker 10: Yeah, Well, I mean we're well, you know, we meet
- 25:10Speaker 10: you at the dock or at the camp, and you
- 25:12Speaker 10: set up a time, go out, fish, come in, clean them,
- 25:15Speaker 10: back them for you, y'all hit the road and I
- 25:17Speaker 10: go get the boat.
- 25:18Speaker 9: Riddy, I have for another day. Best way to get
- 25:22Speaker 9: in touch with you? I know you're on the web,
- 25:24Speaker 9: but you have a website at Cajun Paradise. What's the
- 25:26Speaker 9: best way?
- 25:27Speaker 10: Best way is a cell phone three three seven two
- 25:30Speaker 10: seven four zero seven eight eight. But like you said,
- 25:33Speaker 10: they can look up anything on Facebook or the web
- 25:37Speaker 10: and they can message through that. All right, My email
- 25:39Speaker 10: address is on there, and you know, being like you said,
- 25:42Speaker 10: most days, I'm guessing it's close to two o'clock right now,
- 25:44Speaker 10: maybe two thirty time. I'll get done, and get back home.
- 25:47Speaker 10: It'll be four to five.
- 25:48Speaker 11: And some people are like, well, I messaged you this
- 25:50Speaker 11: morning to day, I'm working, you know, I'm working. I'll
- 25:53Speaker 11: get back to you, you know, as soon as I can.
- 25:55Speaker 9: That's why I ramas he will because his livelihood depends on.
- 25:59Speaker 10: It, exactly, in the livelihoods all my guys depend on
- 26:03Speaker 10: me getting back. So but uh yeah, there's you know,
- 26:05Speaker 10: there's several different ways. Like I said, you know, we
- 26:08Speaker 10: try to you know, since Pop pass, it's it's a
- 26:10Speaker 10: little harder for me keeping up with the social media
- 26:12Speaker 10: part of fla facebooks so on that I probably only
- 26:15Speaker 10: do one or two posts a week. But uh, you
- 26:17Speaker 10: know he was on it every day.
- 26:19Speaker 9: Yeah, he was.
- 26:19Speaker 6: He was.
- 26:20Speaker 10: That was that was his job from like daylight till
- 26:22Speaker 10: nine every morning was update, update Facebook.
- 26:25Speaker 9: But I'm telling yea, he was relentless with that too.
- 26:27Speaker 9: We're talking about Cajun Fell and unfortunately we lost him.
- 26:30Speaker 9: But last year, but uh, this guy and his dadon
- 26:36Speaker 9: the Redfish cop, I mean they fished tournaments all over
- 26:40Speaker 9: did you know?
- 26:40Speaker 10: We fished him from South Podre Island to the Florida coast,
- 26:44Speaker 10: all the way up to North Carolina and we had
- 26:47Speaker 10: a we probably did it about twelve years of traveling around.
- 26:50Speaker 9: You help, Belgi. You first lodge that way, did you not.
- 26:52Speaker 11: That's exactly right. That's what we were doing.
- 26:54Speaker 10: We were tournament fishing, and actually we had a probably
- 26:57Speaker 10: a four or five year successful run back when it
- 26:59Speaker 10: was only and we actually did, you know, very well.
- 27:03Speaker 11: It was very lucrative, so we were able.
- 27:04Speaker 9: I'm not gonna say, I'm not going to say tournament
- 27:07Speaker 9: fishing is easier, but you're not dealing with so many
- 27:10Speaker 9: people with your tournament fishing.
- 27:12Speaker 11: Yeah, you're right about.
- 27:13Speaker 10: That now, but let's you know, I've been gutting since
- 27:16Speaker 10: nineteen eighty five. You know, I graduated high school, I
- 27:18Speaker 10: got a boat and started fishing, and I was blessed
- 27:20Speaker 10: to be able to still do.
- 27:22Speaker 11: Something that I thoroughly.
- 27:23Speaker 10: I get asked all the time, I'm getting close to
- 27:25Speaker 10: sixty years old, and how long are you going to fish?
- 27:27Speaker 10: And I said, man, whenever I get tired of it,
- 27:29Speaker 10: but right now I'm not. You know, I still enjoy
- 27:31Speaker 10: That's like today her catching those fishing and laughing and
- 27:35Speaker 10: cutting up and getting so excited. I was like, I mean,
- 27:37Speaker 10: that makes it. That makes me happy to go and
- 27:40Speaker 10: look forward to going again tomorrow.
- 27:42Speaker 9: Why didn't we catch more? By the way, I don't
- 27:44Speaker 9: understand that.
- 27:45Speaker 11: Well, it wasn't. I mean, I know why. I don't why.
- 27:48Speaker 11: It's right, it was somebody else that was hogging all
- 27:50Speaker 11: the fish.
- 27:51Speaker 9: But you know, anyway, Oh, it's a great tay, guys,
- 27:55Speaker 9: just a great tay here in Hackbury, Louisiana. Captain Cavin
- 27:58Speaker 9: will will put you on fish. His guides will put
- 28:01Speaker 9: you on fish at Cajun Paradise here on the Outdoor
- 28:05Speaker 9: Edition brought to you by Clark Eisenhower. You know, you
- 28:09Speaker 9: just you don't have a lot of trips like the
- 28:13Speaker 9: one we had a few weeks ago at Kate with
- 28:15Speaker 9: Captain Kevin at Cajun Paradise. But I will tell you,
- 28:20Speaker 9: even on that day where we caught tons of fish,
- 28:23Speaker 9: there were other guides he's in touch with that aren't
- 28:26Speaker 9: doing what we're doing. It's just it's important too if
- 28:31Speaker 9: you're going to you know, invest in a guide and
- 28:35Speaker 9: it's not cheap. Know who you're fishing with. You know,
- 28:40Speaker 9: these guys are just really good.
- 28:42Speaker 8: He's done it all his life. As we talked about,
- 28:46Speaker 8: he won a lot.
- 28:46Speaker 9: Of money on the Redfish Tournament trail with his dad,
- 28:52Speaker 9: and he's just a outstanding fisherman and he knows those waters.
- 28:57Speaker 8: He grew up there, he lived there. Incredible trip and
- 29:01Speaker 8: we have had.
- 29:02Speaker 9: Our share of them over the years with Kevin and
- 29:06Speaker 9: his staff and obviously the lodge full service, great for
- 29:13Speaker 9: business and recommend it. I want to send you over

- 29:38Speaker 9: you don't catch very much and you're not catching what
- 29:41Speaker 9: you want to.
- 29:43Speaker 8: That's where Lucko Ranch comes in.
- 29:45Speaker 9: This is what these folks do every day, fishery management services.

- 33:55Speaker 9: a record three hundred and twenty three pounds swordfish on.
- 33:59Speaker 8: Debt but there was a.
- 34:01Speaker 9: Problem he was forty five miles off shore in The
- 34:05Speaker 9: gulf aboard a twenty two foot twin The. Cat one
- 34:12Speaker 9: of his twin engines was dead and he was running
- 34:15Speaker 9: low on. Fuel it was a strange predicament for a
- 34:21Speaker 9: Se toe captain to find himself In ward's the captain Of,
- 34:26Speaker 9: Coeto South, mississippi and is usually pulling other people out
- 34:30Speaker 9: of sticky. Situations he put in a call To Captain
- 34:33Speaker 9: Rob buck Of Cete West bank and began limping toward
- 34:38Speaker 9: The Venice. Marina an hour, later the two captains met
- 34:42Speaker 9: Near South, pest Where Captain buck delivered fuel Took Captain
- 34:48Speaker 9: ward in. Tow and it's a good thing because the
- 34:52Speaker 9: second engine died in route to the. Marina on the,
- 34:57Speaker 9: scales the three hundred and twenty three pounds swordfish outweighed
- 35:02Speaker 9: The louisiana state record of three hundred ten pounds and
- 35:07Speaker 9: The mississippi record of three hundred and nine point one four.
- 35:11Speaker 9: Pounds But ward caught the fish on an electric, reel
- 35:18Speaker 9: which disqualifies him from any record.
- 35:22Speaker 8: Consideration AND i saw a picture of this.
- 35:25Speaker 9: Fish it is. Gigantic it's always amazing what swims in the.
- 35:34Speaker 8: Ocean.
- 35:37Speaker 9: More Captain Eddie brown's favorite harpoon currently resides at the
- 35:43Speaker 9: bottom of The gulf Of mexico Slash, america.
- 35:48Speaker 8: And he couldn't be.
- 35:48Speaker 9: Happier in Mid, January brown was headed out Of Cypress
- 35:52Speaker 9: cove out Of venice on a day that was ideal,
- 35:56Speaker 9: visibility perfect for a hunting tune on the. Surface the
- 35:59Speaker 9: day started with two black fins and one hundred and
- 36:02Speaker 9: sixty five pound yellow. Fin the crew Included Jeff tamiloff
- 36:07Speaker 9: out Of Vero, Beach.
- 36:08Speaker 8: Florida Um.
- 36:12Speaker 9: For, tomilof a typical tuna trip out of his homeport
- 36:16Speaker 9: involves one hundred and ten mile run for sixty pound,
- 36:19Speaker 9: fish so he's already excited about the one sixty five yellow.
- 36:23Speaker 9: Fin but then the crew up the annie on the
- 36:25Speaker 9: fish that would Claim brown's, harpoon a two hundred and
- 36:30Speaker 9: seven pound yellow fed that was so, Disagreeable brown decided
- 36:37Speaker 9: to harpoon. It the problem is he didn't tie off
- 36:41Speaker 9: the dart he hit the, fish it went, berserk charged
- 36:44Speaker 9: the boat nearly smacked him in the face with a
- 36:47Speaker 9: harpoon before the harpoon detached and sank to the. Bottom
- 36:53Speaker 9: they finally gaffed the fish and got it on, board
- 36:56Speaker 9: but the day wasn't. Over brown Put tom off at
- 37:00Speaker 9: another client in range of another school of erupting.
- 37:03Speaker 8: Tuna both hooked up.
- 37:05Speaker 9: IMMEDIATELY a yellowfin hit a top Water that is, cool
- 37:10Speaker 9: but no one realized at the moment the size of
- 37:12Speaker 9: the fish he had. Hooked it only took fourteen minutes
- 37:15Speaker 9: to land. Him but when they put him on the
- 37:18Speaker 9: scales that the, docks it weighed two.
- 37:20Speaker 8: Hundred and fifty six.
- 37:23Speaker 9: Pounds he noted the hooks of the clear madmanus popper
- 37:29Speaker 9: had pinned close to the fish's, mouth presenting it from
- 37:32Speaker 9: preventing it from getting, oxygen which is why it only
- 37:35Speaker 9: took fourteen. Minutes the fish measured seventy one, inches had
- 37:41Speaker 9: a fifty four inch, girth and was five pounds heavier
- 37:45Speaker 9: than the existing State louisiana record of two hundred and
- 37:50Speaker 9: fifty one pounds caught in twenty.
- 37:53Speaker 8: Twelve Said. Brown that thing was a butterball.
- 37:57Speaker 9: Man we later found out if we had harp wound,
- 38:00Speaker 9: it it wouldn't.
- 38:02Speaker 8: Qualify for the state.
- 38:04Speaker 9: Record SO i guess attempting to harpoon it and actually
- 38:09Speaker 9: bringing it in by harpoon are two different. Things you,
- 38:13Speaker 9: know when it comes to the state record two hundred
- 38:19Speaker 9: and fifty six, Pounds i'm telling you that would have
- 38:23Speaker 9: been a long fight because those yellow, FINS i, mean
- 38:33Speaker 9: one of, those.
- 38:36Speaker 8: Probably half of Those i've done for the. DAY i,
