Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: What a night for Jordan Pope, the transfer guard from
- 0:03Speaker 1: Oregon State, a new Moody Moody Center single single game
- 0:08Speaker 1: scoring record, eclipsing Marcus Carr, who scored forty one against
- 0:12Speaker 1: Texas A and M Commerce back in twenty twenty two,
- 0:16Speaker 1: the seventh most in Texas history, fourth most overall in
- 0:20Speaker 1: a home game. I believe Slater Martin has a record
- 0:23Speaker 1: with forty nine points. And the funny thing about it was,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and by the way, Texas did win against University of
- 0:29Speaker 1: New Orleans ninety eight sixty two, one more home game
- 0:32Speaker 1: before conference play begins. The funny thing about Jordan Pope's
- 0:36Speaker 1: forty two points, So I believe, and Bob Blue had
- 0:41Speaker 1: this tweet last night that I think Pope had one
- 0:46Speaker 1: maybe one point or one bucket with like six minutes
- 0:50Speaker 1: ago in the first half, got six thirty to go
- 0:54Speaker 1: in the first half. Pope at one point he didn't
- 0:56Speaker 1: have his first field goal into the six twenty two
- 0:58Speaker 1: mark the first half and then would go on the
- 1:02Speaker 1: score forty two points. There was a moment in the
- 1:04Speaker 1: second half where I was like, okay, I should probably
- 1:07Speaker 1: you know, he hit a couple back to back shots.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I was like Okay, you know he's up to twenty.
- 1:11Speaker 2: You know what's his career high? Thirty one?
- 1:12Speaker 1: Okay, I did not know that we were going to
- 1:14Speaker 1: be looking up what is the Moody High, the Texas High?
- 1:17Speaker 1: All of that in special things to Scott McConnell, the
- 1:19Speaker 1: Texas sid who assisted our radio broadcast, to Roger Wallason,
- 1:23Speaker 1: Eddie Orn by the way, you heard them on SEC
- 1:26Speaker 1: Network plus last night on the call the multi cast.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But Pope fifteen to twenty one, eight to twelve from
- 1:32Speaker 1: beyond the arc, career high, four or five from from
- 1:35Speaker 1: the three throw line thirty three minutes the career highs
- 1:37Speaker 1: and field Wald have made three pointers made and those
- 1:40Speaker 1: eight three pointers were too shy of a Texas record.
- 1:44Speaker 2: What a scoring night for Jordan Pope.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And we now, obviously it's been two games without Trey Johnson,
- 1:50Speaker 1: without and Jason Kent's been out for a little bit.
- 1:52Speaker 1: We're krying to see, Okay, who's going to step up offensively?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Can Texas maybe find some more rhythm? We know what
- 1:57Speaker 1: Arthur Kloom is going to do every game. We know
- 1:59Speaker 1: what Trey Johnson's going to do. Okay, what about the
- 2:01Speaker 1: other scores? Tremon Marx, Trey Johnson, Juan Larry, Kayden Schenerick,
- 2:06Speaker 1: Nick Cody who's had a couple of really good games.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And for Pope build to do this, I think gives
- 2:11Speaker 1: RTI a little bit more confidence about his offense going
- 2:14Speaker 1: forward because they've got four at least four guys who
- 2:19Speaker 1: are capable scores, and it's probably more than that. But
- 2:23Speaker 1: Trey Johnson can get his bucket when he needs to,
- 2:25Speaker 1: Jordan Pope can do that. Arthur Khaluoma has been fantastic
- 2:28Speaker 1: this season. What a what a portal find for RTI
- 2:32Speaker 1: and his staff. But they able to see this from
- 2:35Speaker 1: from Jordan Pope and Tremon and Mark two also a
- 2:37Speaker 1: capable score. Feel good about the Texas offense. It's just
- 2:40Speaker 1: can they, you know, establish that chemistry throughout conference play?
- 2:44Speaker 1: And defensively, can they play hard defensively because against Yukon,
- 2:48Speaker 1: now they know they should the ball, shoot the ball
- 2:50Speaker 1: wall at all against Yukon in that first half. But also,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I mean Alex Carabank did whatever he wanted to against
- 2:56Speaker 1: Texas for most of that game. So defensively, can they
- 2:59Speaker 1: figure stuff out? Wanted to bring to you Roger Wallace's
- 3:02Speaker 1: postgame interview with Jordan Pope after setting that career high
- 3:07Speaker 1: forty two points last night in the victory against New Orleans.
- 3:16Speaker 3: First of all, at what point do you feel like
- 3:17Speaker 3: you're kind of in one of those offensive grooves?
- 3:20Speaker 4: Hear me, Oh, I know, I mix my first couple
- 3:22Speaker 4: of shots. My teammates just told me to keep soon.
- 3:24Speaker 4: And after I hit a few, you know, my teammates.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Be beating me the ball.
- 3:28Speaker 2: You know, they gave me the most confidence. I just
- 3:30Speaker 2: kept going.
- 3:31Speaker 3: In a game like this, it seemed like a game
- 3:32Speaker 3: of runs. You guys get out to the big lead,
- 3:34Speaker 3: then they cut it to six. You get the big
- 3:36Speaker 3: league before the half, and then they have a good start.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean your points were also really important to get
- 3:42Speaker 3: that separation.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Know we went to have time.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Not too happy with ourselves, you know, we feel like
- 3:46Speaker 4: we let the game kind of stick around. We weren't
- 3:48Speaker 4: we weren't doing our job on a defensive end. So
- 3:50Speaker 4: we were really trying to hang our heads on that.
- 3:52Speaker 4: And we came out, we entered the bell, and we
- 3:54Speaker 4: stopped any run they went on.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Rtie always talks about it.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You played the defensive end and then the offensive end.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Takes care of itself.
- 4:01Speaker 3: How is that transition from from Oregon State to Texas
- 4:04Speaker 3: and the way they play, how's that been going for you?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Oh? You know, we, like I said, we hang our
- 4:08Speaker 4: hats on a defensive end. And we're a Ruscille team,
- 4:10Speaker 4: so we know we get stops, we could get rebounds,
- 4:12Speaker 4: running position, offense, take care of himself. So really hanging
- 4:15Speaker 4: our hats on a defensive, defensive end, especially for myself.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's going into conference and did you know you had
- 4:20Speaker 3: your a your career high and then when did you
- 4:23Speaker 3: know that you were getting close to forty?
- 4:25Speaker 4: My teammates are saying, now you almost at thirty, You
- 4:27Speaker 4: almost at thirty. Oh you almost at forty, You almost
- 4:28Speaker 4: at forty. You know, I ain't gonna lie. That was
- 4:30Speaker 4: the first time in my life, like I.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Just blacked out.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I didn't really know what was going on. I just
- 4:34Speaker 4: the hoop was super big for me.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And then to get honored as the most points in
- 4:39Speaker 3: the history it's a young history, but still in the
- 4:42Speaker 3: history of this building. What does that mean?
- 4:44Speaker 4: Oh, you know, it means a lot.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Is my first year here.
- 4:46Speaker 4: I really admired the fans, I think them all for
- 4:49Speaker 4: coming out, the support they have told.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Me since I got here has been amazing.
- 4:51Speaker 4: My teammates, my coaches, they are trust me, you know,
- 4:53Speaker 4: I'm glad to be here.
- 4:55Speaker 2: And now you get a little break.
- 4:56Speaker 3: What's the importance of a getting away and getting that
- 4:59Speaker 3: mental break, but still kind of thinking basketball because you
- 5:02Speaker 3: know what what's around the corner here.
- 5:03Speaker 4: That's good to get a little mental resay, go home
- 5:05Speaker 4: and spend time with a loved one for the holidays
- 5:07Speaker 4: and get back to go home and see your family
- 5:08Speaker 4: and friends. So that will definitely be big for us.
- 5:10Speaker 4: But for me, I'll still be in the gym, gain
- 5:12Speaker 4: shots up, stay in sharps. When we get back, we
- 5:14Speaker 4: can finish strong going in the conference.
- 5:16Speaker 2: That's a heck of a way to go into the holidays. Jordan.
- 5:18Speaker 2: That starts appreciate early Christmas came.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah, ye, Starry, all right, that's shortan pope with Roger
- 5:23Speaker 1: Walls Texas does get about a week off a little
- 5:26Speaker 1: bit more before returning back to Moody December twenty ninth,
- 5:29Speaker 1: where the host Northwestern State and then begin conference play
- 5:32Speaker 1: against Texas A and M on January fourth, seven pm
- 5:36Speaker 1: in College Station.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Before we hit this break, here is Roger Wallace with
- 5:41Speaker 2: Rodney Terry after last night's victory.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Well, let's start with the effort from Jordan Pope. Not
- 5:46Speaker 3: only does he score forty two, but he helped kind
- 5:48Speaker 3: of put this one away.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, Jordan's been coming, you know, always saving him.
- 5:52Speaker 5: You know, when you bring it new guys, you program.
- 5:55Speaker 5: We talked a little bit about it earlier. Rodgers really
- 5:56Speaker 5: imployed it. You know, guys really trying to do the
- 5:59Speaker 5: right things. Will those guys are gonna try to do
- 6:01Speaker 5: it to a fault. You know, he's been a natural
- 6:02Speaker 5: scor his entire career. We really pressed him hard to
- 6:06Speaker 5: shoot the ball at the times that he's passed up
- 6:08Speaker 5: so many open looks earlier in the season. It's good
- 6:11Speaker 5: to have him kind of have the night that he
- 6:13Speaker 5: had the night, but he's been coming here the last
- 6:15Speaker 5: two weeks with this corn helped us win the game
- 6:17Speaker 5: with the n CEA State made big shots and stuff
- 6:19Speaker 5: as well.
- 6:20Speaker 3: When the guy's going like that, do you alter anything
- 6:23Speaker 3: offensively for them?
- 6:24Speaker 2: No, we try to find him.
- 6:27Speaker 5: We try to get him more shots. No, We're he's
- 6:30Speaker 5: been a guy really the whole season. You know, you
- 6:33Speaker 5: can see me yelling over there, and may you missed it,
- 6:35Speaker 5: You miss it, Take the next one, shoot it again.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Because he's a he's a big time shoots, one of
- 6:38Speaker 5: our better shooters on the team. He and Trey Johnson
- 6:41Speaker 5: elite shooters. And we need to shoot the.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Ball at wll force. What about that start?
- 6:46Speaker 3: You get out to the sixteen o lead and then
- 6:47Speaker 3: all of a sudden you're having to call a time
- 6:49Speaker 3: out and a little bit of a letdown. What did
- 6:52Speaker 3: you say to your guys at that point in the
- 6:54Speaker 3: ball game.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Well, we're still just talking about habits, man. You know,
- 6:56Speaker 5: we were trying to again have the urgency that we
- 6:59Speaker 5: want to play with as we get closer here to
- 7:01Speaker 5: the SEC play, and you've got to try to have
- 7:04Speaker 5: a killer mentality. You know, that's an opportunity for us
- 7:07Speaker 5: to really put this team away early and give them
- 7:10Speaker 5: no hope. And you know, we let off the foot
- 7:12Speaker 5: and let them foot off the gas a little bit
- 7:14Speaker 5: and let those guys make a few shots, and you know,
- 7:16Speaker 5: now you got to come play again, right and.
- 7:19Speaker 6: You got thirty days of just pure basketball. These guys
- 7:22Speaker 6: don't have the other class. You've seen a lot of
- 7:23Speaker 6: guys develop and how important is it with these guys
- 7:26Speaker 6: for the next four weeks and really playing together and
- 7:29Speaker 6: developing their game. Yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 5: You I think you know, a lot of times you'll
- 7:33Speaker 5: see around the country some of the teams, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 5: will shoot their best percentage during this time because they're
- 7:38Speaker 5: guys are just in the gym and they get a
- 7:40Speaker 5: chance to work on the craft and they get a
- 7:42Speaker 5: lot of shots up, you know, and they don't have
- 7:46Speaker 5: academic obligations to deal with and be stressed with, so
- 7:49Speaker 5: you know, they're they're basically playing like a pro really,
- 7:52Speaker 5: to be honest, if you want to be really good,
- 7:54Speaker 5: you put the time in and you reput your soul
- 7:56Speaker 5: out of it and everything. But teams will have a
- 7:58Speaker 5: lot of opportunities to be in the gym and really
- 7:59Speaker 5: work the game.
- 8:00Speaker 3: What's the schedule look like over the next ten days.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I know we talked to Jordan. He said he'll still
- 8:05Speaker 3: be in the gym when he gets a little bit
- 8:06Speaker 3: of a mental break as well. But how do you
- 8:08Speaker 3: kind of handle the next week and a half?
- 8:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean we've had a good stretch here to
- 8:12Speaker 5: start the year. You know, guys at five days right now,
- 8:16Speaker 5: and the thing I've said to them is I want
- 8:19Speaker 5: them to go home and spend times with the loved ones.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Christmas is about being with your family, being able to
- 8:23Speaker 5: tell your loved ones you love them and how thankful
- 8:25Speaker 5: you are to have them in your life, and to
- 8:27Speaker 5: say thank you for what you've done for me, and
- 8:30Speaker 5: and just cherished his time, you know. So I want
- 8:32Speaker 5: them to, you know, just have a great time with
- 8:34Speaker 5: their family and understand the religious part of Christmas as well.
- 8:37Speaker 2: But don't worry about basketball.
- 8:39Speaker 5: We got plenty of time to come back, get ourselves
- 8:40Speaker 5: back in shape, and get up and going again.
- 8:42Speaker 3: What was it like to see your guys congratulate Jordan
- 8:46Speaker 3: the way he did, I mean meeting him out at
- 8:47Speaker 3: half court and then after the game.
- 8:48Speaker 5: That was pretty cool. All this team's pretty close now.
- 8:51Speaker 5: These guys have a really good chemistry off the court.
- 8:53Speaker 5: They all like each other and we haven't had to
- 8:56Speaker 5: force feed that. It's you know, happened organically over the
- 8:58Speaker 5: summer with these as all pulling for each other, look
- 9:01Speaker 5: like in each other and celebrating each other's success. So
- 9:04Speaker 5: they've been great with that all year.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Thanks Coaching.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Happy Holidays to you, Thanks Roger, Happy holidays along one
- 9:09Speaker 5: nation save holiday.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It was a sixteen oh star for text against New Orleans.
- 9:14Speaker 1: They got back in at sixteen eight I think was
- 9:16Speaker 1: the score, and it was a ten point game in
- 9:19Speaker 1: the second half, and then Jordan Pope happened. So congrats
- 9:22Speaker 1: to Jordan Pope. Forty two points last night in Moody
- 9:24Speaker 1: Center high in a career high for Jordan Pope as
- 9:28Speaker 1: well as Texas with the victory over New Orleans.
- 9:31Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up Hour two on the
- 9:33Speaker 2: Show
