- 0:00Are you one of those people? Are you or I today feeling
- 0:02anxious, worried, troubled? Take heart.
- 0:05Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
- 0:09Sarah's story, Mary's story, and our stories, they all testify
- 0:14that God can do miracles. And when you and I look to the
- 0:18cross, we can see that God has already provided for our deepest
- 0:22needs to His Son, Jesus Christ. It's a reminder.
- 0:26Don't delay when God speaks. Imagine that you're scrolling
- 0:36through your social media feed and the first thing you see is a
- 0:39headline that says 70 year old woman gives birth to twins.
- 0:44So you tap on it. You think it's going to be click
- 0:46bait, but actually this really happened.
- 0:48A 70 year old mom in Uganda and her miracle babies now giving
- 0:54birth at the age of 70 is truly incredible.
- 0:57And today we'll see Sarah goes one step further by giving birth
- 1:01to Isaac when she was 90 years old.
- 1:03In the chapters we'll study today, we're going to see time
- 1:06after time of how God keeps showing up in unexpected ways.
- 1:10And today we'll focus on three stories.
- 1:13First Sarah's laughter, second, lost tragedy, and then God's
- 1:18providing. So first Sarah's laughter.
- 1:21Picture the scene. Abraham is outside the tent.
- 1:24He's entertaining some guests who have stopped by an 89 year
- 1:28old woman, Sarah. She's inside the tent
- 1:31eavesdropping on what they're saying.
- 1:33One of the visitors says that next year Sarah will be holding
- 1:37a son in her arms. She's so astonished that she
- 1:40nearly drops her bread bowl. We read.
- 1:43Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, After I am worn out and
- 1:47my Lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?
- 1:51Now we can't know the answer for sure, but I wonder what kind of
- 1:55laugh was this? You know, there are different
- 1:57kinds of laughs. There's like a giggle.
- 1:59There's a chuckle. There's a ha ha, no way.
- 2:03And then there's a bitter laugh. And I wonder if Sarah's laugh
- 2:06was more of a laugh of disappointment.
- 2:09Like, I doubt this will ever happen to me.
- 2:12For decades Sarah has wished for a child and she's never received
- 2:16that promised blessing. So we don't know what kind of
- 2:19laugh it was, but we do know that the Lord heard it.
- 2:22We read the Lord said to Abraham, why did Sarah laugh and
- 2:25say will I really have a child now that I am old?
- 2:28I will return to you at the appointed time next year and
- 2:31Sarah will have a son. Now I think this next part's
- 2:34kind of funny. We read Sarah was afraid so she
- 2:37lied and said I did not laugh. It's kind of like this.
- 2:40The Lord says, why did you laugh it stairs like I didn't laugh.
- 2:43Yes, you did did not did do. It's all back and forth.
- 2:47But I think what we really want to focus on is in the middle of
- 2:50the conversation, the Lord said this is anything too hard for
- 2:56the Lord? Putter that statement for a
- 2:59moment. You're going through a struggle
- 3:00right now. Your future seems uncertain.
- 3:02Maybe there's a health challenge.
- 3:04You're dealing with an unexpected expense.
- 3:07You're not sure how you're going to pay the bills.
- 3:09Take heart. Nothing is too hard for the
- 3:13Lord. Now, a quick word about the word
- 3:16Lord. You see, it's in all caps here.
- 3:20So there's two different Hebrew words.
- 3:22There's the word Adonai, which is translated as Lord, capital
- 3:25Lord. And then there's YHWH, often
- 3:30pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah, and that word is translated as
- 3:34Lord all in caps. So in this passage that we're
- 3:38just looking at, you can see that these are both references
- 3:40to Jehovah, Lord in all caps. And the word Lord or Jehovah in
- 3:46all caps shows up more than 6000 times in the Old Testament.
- 3:51Over and over we see the Lord in action.
- 3:55The Lord makes a covenant with Abraham.
- 3:57The Lord speaks to Moses on Sinai, and that's Jesus Christ.
- 4:00The living Christ says Jesus Christ was the great Jehovah of
- 4:05the Old Testament. So when we read is Anything too
- 4:09hard for the Lord, we're talking about Jesus Christ himself.
- 4:13The Lord who spoke to Abraham is the same Lord who was later born
- 4:17in Bethlehem, who did miracles and raised the dead.
- 4:20And nothing is too hard for him. So flash forward one year.
- 4:24Now we see Sarah. She's cradling a newborn Isaac.
- 4:28She's laughing this time for sure.
- 4:29It's a happy laugh. She even names her baby Isaac
- 4:32because it means he laughs. Sarah says God has brought me
- 4:37laughter and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.
- 4:42Sarah's story invites us to think about and pray for
- 4:45miracles in our own lives. After all, if a 90 year old can
- 4:48plan a baby shower, what's God willing to do for you and me?
- 4:53Remember what President Russell M Nelson taught.
- 4:55Seek and expect miracles. The Lord will bless you with
- 4:59miracles if you believe in Him. Doubting nothing.
- 5:02Do the spiritual work to seek miracles prayerfully.
- 5:06Ask God to help you exercise that kind of faith.
- 5:10Few things will accelerate your spiritual momentum more than
- 5:14realizing the Lord is helping you to move a mountain in your
- 5:19life. I love how the message
- 5:21translation of Romans 418 puts it.
- 5:24We read when everything was hopeless.
- 5:27Abraham and Sarah believed anyway, deciding to live not on
- 5:31the basis of what they saw they couldn't do, but on what God
- 5:36said He would do. Yeah, that's a powerful phrase,
- 5:38and I want to just sit on it for a moment.
- 5:40What would it look like in your life to live not on the basis of
- 5:46what you think you can't do, but on the basis of what God has
- 5:51said He will do? I think in my own life, it's,
- 5:56it's recognizing that even when there's maybe some weird things
- 6:00that happen or confusing things or unexpected things,
- 6:04recognizing that there's a reason for it all and that God
- 6:08is looking out for you. And maybe you can't see the the
- 6:12end yet, but you can at least see that little light at the end
- 6:16of the tunnel. And hopefully you can follow
- 6:18God's tunnel to get to that point.
- 6:20Thank you. I have made the connection
- 6:23suddenly that it has a lot to do with how I am raising,
- 6:26continuing to raise my adult children as some have left the
- 6:31church and are making decisions that are scary to watch.
- 6:36And I think I can't. What am I to do?
- 6:38I can't fix this. What am I to do?
- 6:41And then I come to the termination.
- 6:42It isn't about what I can or cannot do.
- 6:46It's what the Lord can and that it's up to Him.
- 6:50He is in relentless pursuit of them and that brings me great,
- 6:57great comfort. Thank you.
- 6:59Yeah. It's like we have to keep our
- 7:00eyes not on what seems like is going to happen or not happen,
- 7:03but on the power of what God really can do.
- 7:07The book of Hebrews summarizes Sarah's story beautifully.
- 7:11We read by faith. Even Sarah, who was past
- 7:13childbearing age, was enable to bear children because she
- 7:17considered him faithful who had made the promise.
- 7:22Maybe Sarah didn't believe perfectly, but she believed the
- 7:25one who was perfectly faithful. And centuries later, an Angel
- 7:30appeared not to an elderly wife, but to a teenage girl.
- 7:34The Angel said, you will conceive and give birth to a
- 7:37son, and you are to call him Jesus.
- 7:40And Mary, quite understandably, asks, how will this be since I'm
- 7:44a virgin? In a way, her question echoes
- 7:48Sarah's laugh. Because if it's impossible for
- 7:52Sarah to bear son with an old husband, how much more
- 7:55impossible is it for Mary to bear a son with no husband?
- 7:59And just like Sarah, Mary is told for nothing is impossible
- 8:04with God. Sarah's story, Mary's story, and
- 8:08our stories, they all testify that God can do miracles.
- 8:12But we also know that just because miracles happen doesn't
- 8:15mean that everything always goes perfectly.
- 8:18Yes, there was a miracle baby, but not every promise God gave
- 8:22to Abraham and Sarah was fulfilled in their lifetime.
- 8:26In the book of Hebrews we read by faith, Abraham, when called
- 8:30to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,
- 8:33obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
- 8:38Abraham and Sarah were still living by faith when they died.
- 8:42Notice this next phrase. They did not receive the things
- 8:47promised. Abraham never receives the
- 8:49promised land in his lifetime. They only saw them and welcomed
- 8:54them from a distance, admitting they were foreigners and
- 8:58strangers on the earth. I'm really touched by that
- 9:02phrase. They were foreigners and
- 9:03strangers on the earth. Earth is not our home.
- 9:06This life is not the end. It's a reminder that sometimes a
- 9:09miracle comes, like a 90 year old giving birth to Isaac, but
- 9:14sometimes we wait on the Lord, trusting in His promises.
- 9:19Now, as Abraham continued his conversation with those 3
- 9:22strangers outside the tent, the topic turns to Sodom and
- 9:27Gomorrah. The Lord reveals His intention
- 9:29to judge these cities. And in one of the most tender
- 9:32scenes in Scripture, Abraham says, will you sweep away the
- 9:37righteous with the wicked? And if you remember, they start
- 9:40having a conversation where they bargain.
- 9:41Abraham's like, well, what if there's only 50 people left that
- 9:44are righteous? What if there's only 4540?
- 9:46They bargain all the way down to 10.
- 9:48But sadly, the Lord won't even be able to find 10 righteous
- 9:52people in Sodom and Gomorrah. And that takes us from Sarah's
- 9:56laughter to Lot's tragedy. Now I want to highlight in this
- 10:00Section 2 cautions from Lot and one from his wife.
- 10:05So first in background, Lot is Abraham's nephew.
- 10:09So they've all travelled together to the land of Canaan
- 10:12and overtime their herds become large, causing contention
- 10:15between Abraham's herdsmen and Lots.
- 10:18So Abraham generously says, let's not have any quarreling
- 10:21between you and me or between your herders and mine, for we
- 10:24are close relatives. It is not the whole land before
- 10:27you. Let's part company.
- 10:29If you go to the left, I'll go to the right.
- 10:33If you go to the right, I'll go to the left.
- 10:35Now, we've all been in situations like this before,
- 10:38right? There's only one piece of pizza
- 10:39left. And I'll tell you what, if
- 10:41there's one piece of pizza left, I'm going to get out the
- 10:42protractor to make sure I get my fair share.
- 10:45But Abraham is so generous. He's got this abundance
- 10:48mentality. There is, in this case, one part
- 10:51of the land that is much more favorable.
- 10:54One part of the land actually is better than the other part.
- 10:57And Abraham could have said, look, I'm the elder, I'm going
- 10:59to take it. But no, he says you choose.
- 11:03And so Lot takes the better part in the plains of Jordan.
- 11:06And we read Lot pitched his tent towards Sodom.
- 11:10The men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord,
- 11:13exceedingly so. It's not just like that's a
- 11:16shady part of town. These people are sinners
- 11:19exceedingly. Now this point Lot isn't living
- 11:23in Sodom, but his tent is facing it.
- 11:27Some time passes and then we read Lot Dwelt in Sodom, and a
- 11:32couple chapters later Lot sat in the gate of Sodom.
- 11:36So Lot starts out in the Promised Land, moves closer to
- 11:40Sodom, starts looking at Sodom, and pretty soon he's living
- 11:44there. There's interesting connections
- 11:46between this and modern psychological research.
- 11:48In a landmark study, a psychologist found that people
- 11:51develop a preference for things they repeatedly look at.
- 11:56That's why advertisers will flash the same image over and
- 11:59over again. Or an advertising Jingle that
- 12:02first sounds annoying. Pretty soon you can't get it out
- 12:05of your head. We start to love what we
- 12:07repeatedly see and hear. That's why I can't get the
- 12:11phrase my little soda pop out of my head.
- 12:14You know, it's just like it's there.
- 12:16Mark Zuckerberg knows this as well.
- 12:18Today, social media can track not only what you like or
- 12:21comment or share, it also tracks what you pause on.
- 12:25So as you're scrolling through your feet, if you pause even for
- 12:28an extra second, the algorithms notice.
- 12:32And suddenly what you only glanced at becomes what you see
- 12:35more and more and what you start to want.
- 12:38Consider perhaps a modern day parable.
- 12:41And again to pass, there was a return missionary named Logan.
- 12:44Logan had been the most admired missionary in his whole mission,
- 12:48and now he was ready to conquer the world.
- 12:50He wasn't perfect. He didn't make his bed every
- 12:52morning, he didn't call his mom as often as she would have
- 12:55liked, but he was a really good man.
- 12:58Right after the first round of midterms, he met some guys from
- 13:01a different part of town. He could tell that they were
- 13:04going in a different direction than he was, so when they
- 13:07invited him to a party, he didn't go, but he watched their
- 13:11Instagram stories. The next weekend he drove by the
- 13:14house just to see what was happening.
- 13:17The weekend after he went into the party, and by finals, Logan
- 13:21wasn't just attending the parties, he was throwing them.
- 13:25One day, someone asked him. Hey Logan, are you still
- 13:27religious? And Logan paused, a little
- 13:30longer than he would have expected.
- 13:33You see, the more you see sin, even if it's from a distance,
- 13:36even if you're just curious or you're just joking around, the
- 13:40more it starts to feel normal and even desirable.
- 13:44You don't have to want to be in Sodom.
- 13:46You just have to face that way long enough.
- 13:49And Jesus knew all about this long before Mark Zuckerberg or
- 13:53algorithms. He said the eye is the lamp of
- 13:57the body. If your eyes are healthy, your
- 14:01whole body will be full of light.
- 14:04What you look at shapes what you become.
- 14:07Now contrasts lots experience with the experience of the
- 14:10people of King Benjamin. We read King Benjamin's people
- 14:13pitch their tents with everyone having their tents facing the
- 14:18temple. King Benjamin's people are
- 14:20facing the temple and soon they make covenants and are called
- 14:24the children of Christ. So the principle of repeated
- 14:28exposure, it can work for us or against us.
- 14:31So there's an important first caution here.
- 14:33Be careful what you look at. Yes, this applies to
- 14:36pornography, but it also applies to 100 other things that can
- 14:40turn our attention from God, the path to sin.
- 14:43It just starts with looking and lingering.
- 14:45And that takes us to our second caution.
- 14:47Don't delay when God speaks. So by the time we get to chapter
- 14:5219, Sodom has become so wicked that God decrees it's
- 14:55destruction. They couldn't even find 10
- 14:57righteous people. So God sends some messengers to
- 15:00warn Lot. And when God sees these angels,
- 15:03he invites them to his home and he serves them a nice meal.
- 15:06But that night, the men of the city surround the house and
- 15:09demand that Lot send out his guests to be abused.
- 15:12If you've read this story, you might wonder what is going on
- 15:14here, especially the next part with Lott and his daughters
- 15:18after the escape. This is one place where the
- 15:20Church's scripture helps. Book is really valuable.
- 15:24It says the Joseph Smith translation of Genesis 19
- 15:28clearly describes the actions of Lot's daughters as wicked.
- 15:32The two young women seem to understand that what they were
- 15:35doing was wrong, as they planned to make their father drunk so he
- 15:38would not realize what was happening.
- 15:41Many naturally wonder why this account is included in the Old
- 15:44Testament. Like many stories in Genesis, it
- 15:47explains origins. The children conceived in the
- 15:49story were said to be the ancestors of the Moabites and
- 15:52the Ammonites. These nations would later
- 15:55interact with Israel, sometimes in conflict.
- 15:58This origin account is unfavorable to these people,
- 16:02which might have fueled tension between them and the Israelites.
- 16:06So when the people try to enter Lot's home by force, the angels
- 16:09cause blindness to come upon Lot's attackers.
- 16:12We then read, With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot,
- 16:16saying, Hurry, take your wife and your two daughters who are
- 16:18here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.
- 16:21When Lot hesitated, the man grasped his hand in the hands of
- 16:26his wife and two daughters and LED them safely out of the city.
- 16:29So the angels are hurrying to escape Sodom, and Lot is
- 16:33hesitating. Contrast Lot's hesitation with
- 16:37Abraham's response when the angels visited him in the
- 16:40previous chapter we read. Abraham ran to meet them.
- 16:44Abraham hurried into the tent. Abraham ran to the herd to
- 16:47prepare a calf. Abraham is always hastening
- 16:51while Lot is dragging his feet. It's a reminder.
- 16:55Don't delay when God speaks. Now let's turn to Lot's wife.
- 16:59Did you know that the Savior directly refers to her?
- 17:02It's one of the shortest passages in the New Testament,
- 17:05and it's a haunting 1. Jesus warned his disciples and
- 17:08said, Remember Lot's wife? What does he mean by that?
- 17:14You recall that an Angel told Lot and his family.
- 17:17Flee for your lives. Don't look back and don't stop
- 17:20anywhere in the plane. Flee to the mountains or you
- 17:24will be swept away. Lot's family obeyed.
- 17:26They ran for their lives and they made it safely to a nearby
- 17:30village. Now that's when Lot's wife
- 17:33looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
- 17:36Sometimes the illustrations show us something different.
- 17:38I always pictured in my mind maybe Lot's wife 100 yards
- 17:41outside of the city, and that's when she turned back.
- 17:44But actually the scripture says she's safely in another city,
- 17:48and that's when she turns back to look at Sodom.
- 17:51So what is the meaning of the story and why is it so important
- 17:54that the Savior himself reminds us of it?
- 17:57President Jeffrey R Holland taught apparently what was wrong
- 18:00with Lot's wife was that she wasn't just looking back.
- 18:04In her heart, she wanted to go back.
- 18:07So it isn't just that she looked back.
- 18:08She looked back longingly. In short, her attachment to the
- 18:13past outweighed her confidence in the future.
- 18:17God was offering salvation ahead, but she was stuck in the
- 18:21world behind. Her story illustrates a powerful
- 18:24principle. We can't move forward when we're
- 18:28looking backwards. But before we judge Lot's wife
- 18:32too harshly, we have to ask ourselves, Do we ever do the
- 18:34same? Do we ever romanticize the good
- 18:37old days, even if maybe in those good old days we weren't totally
- 18:41on the right track? Or maybe we dwell on past
- 18:44regrets. We think, if only I had done
- 18:47this differently, everything else now would be so much
- 18:50better. I know that's something that I
- 18:52struggle with. But you remember what the
- 18:54Apostle Paul taught, he said. I focus on this one thing,
- 18:59forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.
- 19:04In his talk, Elder Holland was particularly concerned about
- 19:08people who are letting their past sins hold them back.
- 19:12He said when repentance is sincere, when honest effort is
- 19:15being made to progress, we are guilty of the greater sin.
- 19:18If we keep remembering and recalling and rebashing someone
- 19:21with their earlier mistakes, and that someone might be ourselves,
- 19:26we can be so hard on ourselves, often much more so than with
- 19:31others. Now, he continued, like the anti
- 19:34Nephi, the eyes of the Book of Mormon.
- 19:35Bury your weapons of war and leave them buried.
- 19:38Forgive and do that which is harder than to forgive.
- 19:41Forget, and when it comes to mind again, forget it again.
- 19:45You can remember just enough to avoid repeating the mistake, but
- 19:49then dismiss the destructive and keep dismissing it until the
- 19:53beauty of the atonement of Christ has revealed to you your
- 19:57bright future and the bright future of your family and your
- 20:00friends and your neighbors. God doesn't care nearly as much
- 20:03about where you have been as He does about where you are and
- 20:07with His help, where you are willing to go.
- 20:09That is the thing Lot's wife didn't get.
- 20:13In his talk, Elder Holland gives another powerful application of
- 20:16this principle. He describes when he and Pat
- 20:18were a young married couple as newlyweds at BYU, they were so
- 20:22overwhelmed by financial and educational pressures that they
- 20:25wondered if they should quit. Go back home, President Holland
- 20:29said. In my best reenactment of Lot's
- 20:30wife, I said, in effect, let's go back.
- 20:33Let's go home to Saint George. The future holds nothing for us.
- 20:37Then Pat grabbed me by the lapels and said, We are not
- 20:40going back. We are not going home.
- 20:43The future holds everything for us.
- 20:46Sister Holland's faith kept Elder Holland on course.
- 20:50And years later, when President Holland was the president of
- 20:53BYU, he said he would often look out his window and he would see
- 20:57people at the same crossroads where he had been.
- 20:59And he wondered about those who are feeling anxious in their
- 21:02lives. Are you one of those people?
- 21:05Are you or I today feeling anxious, worried, troubled?
- 21:08President Holland said. To all such of every generation
- 21:11I call out, remember Lot's wife. Faith is for the future.
- 21:16Faith builds on the past but never longs to stay there.
- 21:20Faith trusts that God has great things in store for each of us
- 21:24and that Christ truly is the High priest of good things to
- 21:29come. You and I are invited to leave
- 21:31our sodoms, whatever those might be, in our lives, whether it's
- 21:34our sin or our worries, and to not look back.
- 21:38We look forward to Jesus Christ, and that takes us to our third
- 21:43story, God's providing. The story is sometimes referred
- 21:47to as Isaac's binding or Abraham's test, but I want to
- 21:51call it God's providing, and in a moment I'll explain why.
- 21:55In Genesis chapter 22, God presents Abraham with an
- 21:59unthinkable request. He says take your son, your only
- 22:03son whom you love, Isaac, and sacrifice him as a burnt
- 22:08offering as you would expect with what you know about
- 22:10Abraham. Abraham doesn't delay.
- 22:12Early the next morning he gets up and saddles his donkey.
- 22:15He takes 2 servants and Isaac along with him on a three day
- 22:19journey to Mount Moriah. When they arrive Abraham told
- 22:23his servants, we will worship and then we will come back to
- 22:28you. What do you think Abraham meant
- 22:29by the word we? As far as he knows, he's going
- 22:32to take Isaac back up the mountain and they are not both
- 22:36going to come back down. Do you think by saying we,
- 22:39Abraham was just trying to allay suspicion or do you think he had
- 22:43a secret hope that somehow God was going to perform a miracle?
- 22:48As Abraham and Isaac walked up the hill, Isaac realized that
- 22:52something was missing. He said, Father, the fire and
- 22:55wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?
- 23:00Can you picture Abraham? His throat tightens, his pulse
- 23:04quickens. He says God himself will provide
- 23:08the lamb for the burnt offering. My son, do you think Abraham
- 23:13really believed it? I wonder if walking up the hill,
- 23:16Abraham kept repeating to himself, God will provide, God
- 23:18will provide, God will provide. I love how Pastor Timothy Keller
- 23:23frames Abraham's life. Back in Genesis 12, God had
- 23:26said, I'm sending you to a promised land.
- 23:29Abraham said where? God says, I'll tell you later.
- 23:33Years past, God says you'll have a son.
- 23:36Abraham says, how? God says, I'll tell you later.
- 23:40And now God says, sacrifice your son.
- 23:43Abraham asks why? God says, I'll tell you later.
- 23:48Abraham's faith is incredible. When they reached the summit,
- 23:52Abraham builds an altar and then turns to Isaac.
- 23:56We read he bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar on top
- 24:01of the wood. Now, we don't know exactly how
- 24:03old Isaac was at this time. Actually, it does seem likely
- 24:06that Isaac was a teenager or a young adult.
- 24:09And Abraham is a very old man, so almost certainly in a
- 24:12struggle, Isaac could have overpowered him.
- 24:15But Isaac humbly submits. Abraham raises the knife, and
- 24:20then at the last moment an Angel stops him.
- 24:23Abraham, Abraham, do not lay a hand on the boy, Do not do
- 24:27anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,
- 24:31because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.
- 24:36At that very moment Abraham looked, and there in the thicket
- 24:40he saw a ram caught by its horns.
- 24:44Abraham takes the ram and offers it on the altar instead of his
- 24:47son. I picture Abraham and Isaac both
- 24:50embracing each other, shedding tears of joy.
- 24:54Now, it's totally possible that some of us, when we read the
- 24:56story, we think this is actually crazy.
- 24:58Abraham should have said to God, there is no way I will sacrifice
- 25:01my son. And I'm definitely sympathetic
- 25:03with this approach. There are certainly aspects of
- 25:06this story that are very troubling.
- 25:08But at the same time, God never intended for Abraham to
- 25:11sacrifice Isaac. This was painting a picture of
- 25:15prophecy, looking ahead to another Father, another beloved
- 25:18Son, and another sacrifice. Let's talk just for a moment
- 25:22about typology. In our class, I'll frequently be
- 25:25referring to a scriptural account and saying something
- 25:28about how it points to Jesus Christ or we see an echo of it
- 25:31in the Savior. This is called typology, and
- 25:34there's different levels of typology.
- 25:36First, there's what we might call typological foreshadowing,
- 25:39which means God really intended it, the prophets foretold it,
- 25:44and the people, either in their own time or retrospectively
- 25:47recognize this as applying to Jesus Christ, for example, the
- 25:51Passover lamb. Then we have what we might call
- 25:53illustrative parallels. Maybe there wasn't obvious
- 25:57divine or prophetic intent, but there's still connections.
- 26:02For example, we'll see lots of connections between Joseph in
- 26:05Egypt and Jesus Christ. Then we also have what we might
- 26:08call false typology, where there's really no actual
- 26:12connection between the event and Jesus Christ.
- 26:15For example, Saul is going to search for a lost donkey for
- 26:17three days. That's probably not a
- 26:19foreshadowing of Christ being in the tomb for three days, right?
- 26:22Some things just take three days.
- 26:24But in the case of Abraham offering up Isaac, it's clear
- 26:28typological foreshadowing. In fact, the Book of Mormon
- 26:31prophet Jacob taught Abraham offered up his son Isaac, which
- 26:36is a similitude of God and his only begotten son.
- 26:42So when Abraham and Isaac's experience God is painting a
- 26:45prophetic picture of the ultimate act of love that would
- 26:48later take place on Calvary. Think about the parallels.
- 26:52In both cases, Isaac's and Jesus Christ, there's a miraculous
- 26:56birth. In both cases, a father offers
- 26:59his beloved only son to Abraham. The Lord said, take your son,
- 27:04your only son. John wrote for God so loved the
- 27:07world that he gave his one and only son.
- 27:11Another parallel is in the carrying of the wood.
- 27:13Isaac carried wood up the hill. Jesus carried his cross to
- 27:19Golgotha. With Isaac.
- 27:21There was a substitute. A ram was found to be offered in
- 27:24Isaac's place. But in Jesus's case, he is the
- 27:28substitute, a substitute for each of us.
- 27:31In both cases, we see obedient sons who were submissive to the
- 27:36will of the Father. And both events took place in
- 27:39similar locations. You notice that God told Abraham
- 27:42to go to the region of Moriah. Later we see that Solomon builds
- 27:47his temple in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah.
- 27:51So according to Jewish tradition, the place where
- 27:54Solomon builds his temple is the same place where Abraham nearly
- 27:58sacrificed Isaac. And so within a mile of the
- 28:01place where Abraham nearly sacrificed Isaac, Jesus Christ
- 28:04would be crucified. In both cases we see that the
- 28:07father did not withhold his son. The Angel said to Abraham, you
- 28:12have not withheld your son. And Paul wrote, God did not
- 28:16spare his own son. Consider one more parallel, and
- 28:20this one we might sometimes overlook, a parallel between the
- 28:24mother of Isaac and the mother of Jesus.
- 28:27Joanne Seeley says Sarah being silent in the story of Isaac's
- 28:32sacrifice is a type of Mary. She is the mother of the son
- 28:36who's going to be offered, and she's silent just like Mary was
- 28:40at the cross. We have to think about our
- 28:43mothers from the Scriptures, what part they played and what
- 28:47they did and how important they were, even if we don't hear
- 28:51their voice. These parallels are beautiful.
- 28:54And do you remember what Abraham called the mountain in the King
- 28:59James Version? It says Abraham called the name
- 29:02of that place Jehovah Jira. Now I'll be honest, when I read
- 29:05that before, I was kind of like, I have no idea what that means.
- 29:08The New International Version makes this clearer by providing
- 29:11the Hebrew translation. Abraham called that place the
- 29:15Lord will provide. Do you remember what Abraham
- 29:19said as they walked up the hill? God himself will provide the
- 29:24lamb. In some ways, this is a story
- 29:28about Abraham's obedience, but more deeply, it's about God's
- 29:32providing. After all, Abraham didn't call
- 29:34them out. I will do it because I am
- 29:36awesome. He called it.
- 29:38God will provide. So here's a key lesson.
- 29:44Every challenge we face is an opportunity to trust that God
- 29:48will provide. When Abraham looked up, he saw
- 29:52the ram in the thicket God had provided.
- 29:55When Jesus looked up from the cross and said it is finished,
- 30:00God had provided. And when you and I look to the
- 30:03cross, we can see that God has already provided for our deepest
- 30:08needs through his Son Jesus Christ.
- 30:11I love this insight from Timothy Keller.
- 30:13Think about what it means to you.
- 30:15He said if Abraham had been at the foot of Calvary the moment
- 30:19Jesus died, do you know what he would have done?
- 30:21He would have taken the words of God to him and turned them
- 30:24around. He would have looked up at the
- 30:27Father and he would have said, now I know, now I know that you
- 30:30love me because you did not withhold your Son, your only Son
- 30:34whom you love, from me. How do you know God loves you
- 30:38and values you so much that you can really rest in his love and
- 30:42be free? How can you know he loves you
- 30:45like that? Not by saying I'm just going to
- 30:48trust in Him by the Spirit. You have to see that Abraham and
- 30:52Isaac going up the mountain was a picture of the price the
- 30:55Father paid at Calvary. It has to move you and it has to
- 30:58change you. You have to from the bottom of
- 31:01your heart, by the power of the Spirit, say now I know, Now I
- 31:05know that you love me because you gave your son.
- 31:09You did not withhold your only Son from me.
- 31:13God truly has provided for us through His only begotten Son.
