- 0:00Modern society, influenced heavily by the scientific
- 0:04technical focus of the West, puts a premium on the concept of
- 0:09objectivity versus anything that can be considered subjective,
- 0:13which is then treated with suspicion and largely dismissed.
- 0:19This implies several things. First, it implies that the
- 0:23objectivity is itself truly objective and not subject to the
- 0:28influence of the observer. This, however, is being debunked
- 0:33as we delve deeper into quantum mechanics and the research being
- 0:38done in that field. Second, it implies that only the
- 0:42external physical plane and its objects are real, and that
- 0:47internal reality and other domains or planes of existence
- 0:51are somehow less real and therefore of a lesser level of
- 0:55credence and acceptance. It is interesting to note that
- 1:00traditional understanding in other cultures, and certainly in
- 1:04that of India with its long history in the field of
- 1:07philosophy, yoga and spiritual science, actually treats the
- 1:12physical object as the result of the action of more subtle
- 1:15domains and thus less real than the originating planes and their
- 1:21native action and power. The Titiria Upanishad in
- 1:26particular takes us through the development of understanding of
- 1:29a young disciple, Brugu, who undertakes to learn the cause
- 1:34and nature of existence. He starts, as did Western
- 1:39science, with the external physical reality, but soon comes
- 1:44to understand that this is a result of a prior cause, the
- 1:48vital level of existence, the prana of the universal energy.
- 1:55With further reflection he recognizes mind as the causative
- 1:59agent of the existence, but even this is not the conclusion.
- 2:05He then moves to the formative causative power of the creation
- 2:10and eventually concludes that Ananda or Bliss, which is Co
- 2:15equal with sut existence and chit consciousness, is the
- 2:20ultimate cause. We see a similar progression in
- 2:24Western science now taking place before our eyes.
- 2:28Scientists now claim that matter is a form of condensed energy
- 2:33and by certain means they have shown they can liberate enormous
- 2:37amounts of energy from limited amounts of matter.
- 2:43Now they are moving to the next rung of the ladder of
- 2:45understanding, and scientists are now recognizing more and
- 2:50more that consciousness is actually the root cause of
- 2:54energy and thus material substance.
- 2:57Eventually, once we recognize the reality and the priority of
- 3:03these more subtle domains of existence, we need to redefine
- 3:08our sense of subjective versus objective, since objective facts
- 3:12placed before the external senses are necessarily
- 3:16derivative and not primary facts.
- 3:20And it is the subjective reality of the realms of consciousness
- 3:24that determine this external world we see around us and
- 3:29respond with our external surface consciousness.
- 3:33As consciousness continues to evolve and develop, we can
- 3:37expect that things we cannot currently perceive with our
- 3:40external senses will become sensible to us in other ways.
- 3:46This is an ongoing process and some individuals may develop
- 3:50these capacities earlier than others.
- 3:53This does not mean that they are not real, it simply means that
- 3:58not everyone will be able to validate them at the same time.
- 4:02We need to adjust our view of these matters from a static,
- 4:05fixed view to a more fluid, dynamic, evolving view.
- 4:11Srioro Bindo notes quote Subjective visions can be as
- 4:16real as objective sight. The only difference is that one
- 4:21is of real things in material space while the others are of
- 4:26real things belonging to other planes down to the subtle
- 4:30physical. Even symbolic visions are real
- 4:34in so far as they are symbols of realities.
- 4:38Even dreams can have a reality in the subtle domain.
- 4:42Visions are unreal only when these are merely imaginative
- 4:46mental formations, not representing anything that is
- 4:49true or was true or is going to be true.
- 4:54This power of vision is sometimes inborn and habitual
- 4:58even without any effort of development.
- 5:01Sometimes it wakes up of itself and becomes abundant or needs
- 5:06only a little practice to develop.
- 5:09It is not necessarily a sign of spiritual attainment, but
- 5:14usually when by practice of yoga one begins to go inside or live
- 5:18within, the power of subtle vision awakes to a greater or
- 5:22lesser extent. But this does not always happen
- 5:26easily, especially if one has been habituated to live much in
- 5:32the intellect or in an outward vital consciousness.
