- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to have some of a
- 0:43blunt penknife the Doctor Who consciously podcast after a
- 0:47thrilling experience on satellite five with my dear
- 0:51friend and love of my life. Nathan possibly, but I'm now
- 0:55heading into passing of the ways.
- 0:57How are you feeling about that? I'm a little bit nervous.
- 1:01I'm not sure. This is going to turn out very
- 1:03well for anyone involved. And the death count in this one
- 1:07is pretty high. Yeah.
- 1:09Yeah and Not high in a kind of cynical Eric's a weird way it's
- 1:14high in a cynical Russell T Davies way which is orders of
- 1:18magnitude more satisfying but it is really properly Bleak.
- 1:24Yeah in a way where I actually remember the time thinking are
- 1:27we just leaving that hanging? Is that really how that ends?
- 1:32You know? Like it it's really something.
- 1:37It's all characters that we care about their dietary.
- 1:39Yeah. We thought of death lands, mmm.
- 1:43And some of the real ABS, our boy will get that.
- 1:47Yeah. But then it'll be all sorts of
- 1:48the culmination. And I know is how was forced by
- 1:51Christopher Eccleston deciding to leave before the series even
- 1:55aid. But even the doctor dies in
- 1:58this. Yeah.
- 2:00Yeah. Do you remember the thing?
- 2:03So this is a regeneration story. Forgot a well I guess it's a
- 2:06regeneration story like the first one.
- 2:08I don't know. But anyway, it's a regenerate.
- 2:10Right? There's a regeneration in and I
- 2:14remember wondering, you know, at the time because like we had
- 2:19seen the first episode, then the announcement came out like a day
- 2:23or two later than Eccleston was leaving and so the entire time
- 2:26we're now watching this thinking, fuck is this even
- 2:29going to continue after this year?
- 2:32And then I think we hear that tenant has been cast and but
- 2:39what I didn't, No was were they going to be able to do?
- 2:43Did they do are they going to do a proper regeneration scene or
- 2:49is it? They're gonna have to fudge it
- 2:50in some way because Eccleston stop shooting and staff.
- 2:54And so the fact that they ditional suspense when you are
- 2:56watching this say well yeah this thing you know and he's going
- 3:00yeah that's right and I think you kind of forget maybe because
- 3:04so much is happening that you forget that this is Chris's last
- 3:08episode. I think as you're watching it.
- 3:10But it really was a surprise that we got a regeneration
- 3:14saying and a regeneration seen that was so incredibly good
- 3:19because this is the Hartnell to trout and regeneration episode,
- 3:26isn't it? Because it's like what it is.
- 3:28But I still think that there was a big mystery around now, you
- 3:31know, a bloody clue what was going on.
- 3:32Whereas here, no, it spans are being held at in saying it's
- 3:37alright, it's going to be okay. Yeah, you know I'm Gonna Change
- 3:40Because but Russell has to be careful about it because you
- 3:42remember the, you know, like in the Riders tail, there's a copy
- 3:45of like something that's like the plan for the thing, like the
- 3:49plan for the first season or something and it says explicitly
- 3:53there. You know.
- 3:54It says the thing about the doctor not being a news and
- 3:56public school boy, like you always has been or whatever.
- 3:58And it also says that we don't, we're not mentioning
- 4:01regeneration, we're not mentioning anything like that,
- 4:03you know, we just not going to bring that up because you
- 4:06remember that in the 80s, the doctor's regeneration thing
- 4:09happens, you know, gets And all the time and in the mafia it
- 4:12kind of does a bit as well. Yeah yeah laughing more feet
- 4:18tall. Yeah but but he wasn't going to
- 4:21bring it up and so suddenly has to do it and it's this show
- 4:24that's been huge and successful. And then you're going to pull
- 4:27the stupid stunts of just recasting the lead actor, you
- 4:32know, quite, when everybody's Fallin In Love.
- 4:36Yeah, and it's stupid like the whole regeneration thing is Is
- 4:40so paper thin and so are totally ridiculous.
- 4:44That, you know, really the doctor comes from a race of
- 4:47people who get recast every three years or so you know, like
- 4:54and and so it was absolutely the right thing for them to do, but
- 5:05it could so easily have failed and here, when the show's Soho
- 5:09high profile High-profile, you know, that it's been in decades
- 5:13and they replacing the guy and Russell does such a Deft job of
- 5:17making it. Okay?
- 5:18And, you know, obviously we then lead into the, you know,
- 5:22children in need special and the Christmas Invasion, which does
- 5:26that brilliant job of selling David Tennant, but these white
- 5:30Generations, we introduced an amazing doctor that everybody
- 5:33fell in love with, and then recast him with an even more
- 5:37amazing, actor, the audience. Absolutely were bowled over by
- 5:42yeah and they didn't. You're right.
- 5:44That did not have to work. In fact, every single time, the
- 5:46doctor regenerates, it doesn't have to work, they know.
- 5:50I don't, you know, like, I mean, I'll point out Colin Baker.
- 5:53I won't say it was a failure, but there was some resistance
- 5:57up, Peter Clarity, there was some resistance there.
- 6:00Yeah, yeah. See shit, head off.
- 6:02So, you know, what's our awesome?
- 6:04Yeah. But I did, like, I think because
- 6:08the show are round, he him is so strong, you know, that it's sort
- 6:14of manages to survive the transition.
- 6:16I don't think tenet is quite the actor that Eccleston he is, but
- 6:20he's as charismatic as hell. And, you know, those, those
- 6:25three years of Doctor Who are just getting bleep, right?
- 6:29That's part of his success. Is that some via the
- 6:33storytelling is so incredibly good in those three, See ya, you
- 6:36think we should play out differently?
- 6:38Then if this wasn't a regeneration story, I don't
- 6:43think so. Because I think that what you do
- 6:47is that you have the doctor save but somehow survived at some
- 6:54cost but you know Michael something eat have to go back
- 6:59for Jak straight away though. I'm in the Regeneration.
- 7:01Rather takes his mind away from that but yeah.
- 7:05Yeah. And he does a great job like
- 7:07Jackie's like a question mark hanging over the series because
- 7:10he's kind of left him to die and you know, as far as he knows,
- 7:15Jacks dead and Earth is destroyed like completely
- 7:18destroyed. And there is that throwaway line
- 7:21in the children in need special where, you know, tend to go.
- 7:24So he's, you know, building and up the Earth again or rebuilding
- 7:29the Earth, you know, and, you know, he just sort of throws it
- 7:31away and we go off and do other things, but it does make for a
- 7:34great reunions in Topia a really, really good reunions
- 7:38where they've got business. You know, you guys are what, you
- 7:42know, absolute error because I want them asking what's
- 7:45happening to jack for a whole year.
- 7:48Hey, year after, I know, he's so good.
- 7:52So he just knows how to manipulate his audience.
- 7:54Yeah, yeah. Well, shall we think?
- 7:59I think we should. Yeah, quiet.
- 8:04I will comes in this time, if you're Ready.
- 8:06Okay yep. I'm ready in five four, three,
- 8:11two, one off. We owe and Robinson again.
- 8:16Yeah, that's such a shocking moment.
- 8:19Is that a user? Brilliant pianist and I shan't
- 8:21get some little caviar. Yeah, it's great and it's really
- 8:25fun at like she's, you know, killed Rose, but everything's
- 8:28okay. Now and it's just a terribly fun
- 8:32caveat that you absolutely have to see.
- 8:34I think it's really good. I love all this.
- 8:37I was just packing all the excitement of bad wolf in about
- 8:4030 seconds. Yeah, yeah yeah yeah I love how
- 8:46the Daleks call her he's associate it's I'm funny they're
- 8:50not going to say friend that would just sound ridiculous.
- 8:52Having the Daleks say the word friend wonderfully parched on
- 8:56the piper in brown dwarf. But I did there is yeah.
- 9:01Moments in this where she proved her worth and then some I mean,
- 9:06she's terrific scene in the cafe crater?
- 9:09Yeah, I think it's one of those. It's so surprising.
- 9:15Again, the show ends up in a place that you could never ever
- 9:18have predicted. So we get that trick, the doctor
- 9:23pulls that trick on Clara twice in Time of the Doctor where he
- 9:28just sends her back, you know, out of Harm's Way.
- 9:33But here, it's absolutely gutted.
- 9:35It sounds good Leah. Yeah Franny places so well econ
- 9:40so brilliantly. Yeah yeah.
- 9:43And again it's the mask thing and even Murray joins in on the
- 9:47deception will get there but Marie actually helps to sell
- 9:51that. He solved the problem.
- 9:53I remember watching this with my ex-husband and he was quite
- 10:00interested in this series and the bit where roses at console
- 10:04screaming. Take me.
- 10:05A back and she's like, you know, pulling all believers are left
- 10:09over. Yeah, tears.
- 10:10It's all right. So I'll never forget that but it
- 10:12wasn't a very emotional blow. I'm like, Rusty.
- 10:14This is tapping into something here.
- 10:17So, look, we've got the extrapolator on the console and
- 10:21that's from Boom Town, isn't it? That was what Margaret sylvain
- 10:26was going to serve angle? A so, yeah, so yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 10:33the doctor materializing. The Artists around the two of
- 10:37them are the first time. We've never done that before.
- 10:41It's so incredible. This Dalek here.
- 10:46The dying Newson is had eyes, doesn't it nothing?
- 10:53This is lovely. All hugs.
- 10:55And and she. And then, yeah.
- 10:57Yeah. You know, they're such a lovely
- 10:59card esteem, or they, oh yeah, just terrific.
- 11:04And a bit later, where they kiss. oh, absolutely incredible
- 11:10though the two of them and that was a thing that we were really
- 11:14kind of waiting for I think The dog says in a minute.
- 11:21Come on. Look, it's got meet the
- 11:22neighbors. I think that Rusty Davis
- 11:32understood that we never ever, should have seen the time or
- 11:37ever. No, yeah, yeah.
- 11:39Yeah, hints. And Whispers And imagery, and
- 11:42crazy Concepts, and then our brains do the rest.
- 11:46The second, you see the time War.
- 11:48Cowboys. He's boring.
- 11:49Yeah, it's like a It's Like a Star Wars thing, you know like
- 11:56and the way that he describes this time or in the Rose
- 11:58novelization is pretty incredible to like just amazing.
- 12:05We didn't talk about the end of the next time trailer, which has
- 12:09the voice that we heard just now.
- 12:11Go they survived through me to remember that and so it was like
- 12:16that I thought it was Adam. So here was my dear.
- 12:21You right? I did well.
- 12:24So how do the Daleks know about 20th century TV programs in the
- 12:292000 Century or whatever it is? That would make sense one day.
- 12:33Yeah. And what I didn't realize was
- 12:36that Doctor Who because does that need explaining or not.
- 12:40And at this point, we don't know whether this version of Doctor
- 12:42Who Needs to explain why three contemporary Why the doctor and
- 12:49his companions are in three contemporary reality shows?
- 12:52And it turns out this version of Doctor Who doesn't need to
- 12:54explain that. The reason is that doctor who is
- 12:57confident 2005 and it's exactly. But I thought maybe Adam knew
- 13:04about it or something because he's left behind and this is a
- 13:06sequel to the long game. Gosh, this is Darling, wasn't
- 13:09it? That was a lot of people.
- 13:11Booting now idea about, in fact, yeah, the next Four Seasons as
- 13:14well. Yeah.
- 13:16Well no, I thought he was probably He was canceled the
- 13:19actor and, and so he cancelled. Yeah.
- 13:22What is a station active? Okay, I'm fine.
- 13:25I approve of cancel culture, you know, this would be use a lot of
- 13:28blue screen in these seats. Yeah, but I really love all the
- 13:32beat out like behind Chris reckling.
- 13:34See these little, these tiny, little Daleks.
- 13:35Don't know about their travels. Yeah.
- 13:39Lovely. Little details.
- 13:41Yeah, honestly. You see the Army.
- 13:45Flying about That's really great.
- 13:49Yeah I think it's the blue screen when so he's in front of
- 13:53a practical said, isn't he? But when he's facing the a Dalek
- 13:56hmm and the emperor Dalek sounds like the emperor.
- 13:59Dalek from Evil. It doesn't need a lot like
- 14:04Nicholas Briggs to me. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:06And but it's the thing that Nicholas Briggs does it is
- 14:09season where he does die, like voices and he's imitating.
- 14:16Like, eventually does this shtick where he's imitating
- 14:18Peter Hawkins and David Graham, and you can kind of tell which
- 14:21Dalek is trying to do and maybe he does the occasional who said,
- 14:26other guy, who I don't think is very good.
- 14:31It's good. Zippy yeah, we didn't have zp.
- 14:33When I was a child and I feel fine about that, it's not
- 14:37actually that he has absolutely mastered doing interesting
- 14:41things with the Dalek Voice by out big finish because he didn't
- 14:44early. The original tale.
- 14:46Yeah, which is great. He's giving like very good vocal
- 14:52performances by our might be facetious about Nicholas bricks
- 14:56but the the work he's done with the monsters throughout the new
- 15:01sea routes, right. It's like revolutionaries
- 15:03playing that, you know, Newton on the woman's back, the police.
- 15:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:07Yeah. Which is a another great
- 15:10reformers. Yeah.
- 15:12I think the Blue Screen Works incredibly well, it's so So, you
- 15:16know, these scenes where ecosystems looking back at the
- 15:19Daleks behind him and then behind him is the a Dalek, which
- 15:22is all blue screen and just looks really terrifically,
- 15:25convincing. I think the all of this about
- 15:28being driven mad by your own flesh on Steve, Daleks into
- 15:31racial Purity and now they're made out of humans.
- 15:35But it's also that their religious Maniacs as well.
- 15:39Like when the doctor says, there's a joke about the TV
- 15:42movie here. Isn't that where the doctor says
- 15:46All half-human or part human and the Daleks a that is blasphemy.
- 15:52But that but the Daleks, so the Daleks are Nazis, you know, like
- 15:57in Genesis of the Daleks, they're sort of Communists in a
- 16:00way when they're first introduced.
- 16:02Although there's an element of Nazism in there as well.
- 16:05But here here, their religious maniacs, and we're four years
- 16:10after 9/11 where a bunch of, you know, radicalized religious
- 16:14maniacs. Did the big terrorism
- 16:17everywhere? And and we've already dealt with
- 16:20that story, with that event earlier on this season, in
- 16:24Aliens of London, I just think, you know, he's reinvented them
- 16:31and made them something different.
- 16:32And there is a thread of negativity, towards religion, I
- 16:36think, in this season, or at least ambivalence to it, there
- 16:39are plenty of throw. I think he cracks a little in
- 16:43gridlock. That's me way, I think, yeah.
- 16:46In gridlock is is beautifully done.
- 16:49It's an incredible meditation on religion, that that sequence of
- 16:54second ago. Yeah, I'm so skip back to the
- 16:5780s, right. You got Eric's award writing
- 16:59stories where by the end of it, it's been a huge Massacre and
- 17:03the doctor standing there going. Oh, there should have been
- 17:06another way. Well, I'll tell you now, Rusty
- 17:08Davis, mates, the point of the doctor in that kind of situation
- 17:12where he leans his head against the wall of the TARDIS and the
- 17:15camera. In about 2 seconds and it's so
- 17:20good. It's really good.
- 17:22Yeah, it's the sort of shot just would not have any Classic
- 17:25series, you know where do we are inside the doctors heads.
- 17:29Yeah, that's it. Yeah, the doctor has no interior
- 17:32already particularly in in the classic series but although
- 17:36there are moments charges to Jesse, dude.
- 17:39Yeah, but that's a beautiful thing.
- 17:42I suggested it, you know, terribly.
- 17:46Yeah, yes, I'm and yeah, just what I was gonna say, I don't
- 17:52think there's ever a point in Doctor, Who before, or since
- 17:58where the threat of the Daleks coming for you, is as effective
- 18:03as it is, in this story. Yeah.
- 18:06So we've got the scene with the, the CG CG I model or the
- 18:11computer model of the station, and it's made clear to us that
- 18:15there. As you know, we've just been on
- 18:174000. We're up at floor 500.
- 18:20We already know that. That's how many flaws there are
- 18:22from the long game. And so this whole thing is about
- 18:26them. Gradually coming up to floor,
- 18:29500 and they don't do quite what the doctor predicts know is that
- 18:33they go straight down, all those people.
- 18:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:38I'll probably be. Okay.
- 18:40Yeah. And they do it for no other
- 18:42reason than that, their dialects, you know, and you know
- 18:45what to make stick. Is Jo join us reaction which you
- 18:48can hear them all spring. She's trying to touch the
- 18:52console to turn it off because it's so perfect.
- 18:55It's really good. It's good.
- 18:57It's so dramatic. Look at roses face.
- 19:00Well, they're being cute together.
- 19:03She's such a bitch because I love it.
- 19:10She could be a horrible cow. Aren't you groans?
- 19:13She goes, I really played into those moments because I love
- 19:17Well it's it's something that Russell does like rose like
- 19:21roses often really compassionate.
- 19:24I just think of, you know, how like at the end of love and
- 19:28monsters you know, like she's really cross with Elton because
- 19:32elton's been horrible to her mother or whatever and then
- 19:36she's really kind of she's concerned for him and stuff you
- 19:40know is she's he just draws characters so deaf.
- 19:46Italy. And they can be Comic
- 19:48characters, but they're not quite sitcom characters, like
- 19:51they're not caricatures even Jackie, you know, who's the
- 19:55closest I think to a, sitcom character that the show has,
- 19:59he's a real person heads that these people are always nice and
- 20:04lovely way of. I love that there.
- 20:06Then, it's, you and me. I know that.
- 20:08Ya know you're gonna say that. These are.
- 20:11Yeah, yes, Harvest. But I said to you, this is the
- 20:14closest I've come. I think, right?
- 20:16What could be jealous? And I can be nasty and I can be
- 20:18all of those things. I like it.
- 20:21I know people don't because they want to see idealized versions
- 20:23of people on there, when you know what, you get?
- 20:25Then, you get Clara Oswald. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:28That's right. And that, like, I think Clara is
- 20:30a flawed character eventually when they decide to play that
- 20:34beat harp when they decide that he's a control freak.
- 20:37Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 20:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:39Suddenly that comes out of the air in time in the doctor and
- 20:43she's kind of sweet until then you know, Is it constantly
- 20:46looking after children and staff?
- 20:49What's going on with bamas hair? Yeah.
- 20:53I never liked the kind of his has terrible here.
- 20:56When he's in Torchwood. It's a huge embarrassment.
- 21:03That's it. He's got his army of about 10.
- 21:04People saved on the darling. I mean, I think they notice a
- 21:07fruit. That's a fair, right?
- 21:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:10But I mean, there's lots of people, you know, downstairs.
- 21:13And I love that look, they probably won't come their head.
- 21:16A upstairs to the control room, you'll be okay.
- 21:19I see even if the rumors are true and things were not great
- 21:25between Augustine and Piper in this episode.
- 21:28It's worth noting that chemistry and you know it's great but I
- 21:34think this scene is is really terrific.
- 21:37You know, the two of them are really good together and like
- 21:44they're not making lots of eye contact.
- 21:46Here we go. But it works in context because
- 21:53he didn't even occur to you tomorrow.
- 21:56Why she responds to the she responds to that in such a cute
- 22:00way. It's how I'm so good.
- 22:02You know. But this you know suddenly he's
- 22:05had an idea and Mari comes in there with a musical that's kind
- 22:09of yes you know, for the whole thing with brittle, All of the
- 22:16performance up till now is we're doing this at, but the Daleks
- 22:19are going to come and probably kill us.
- 22:21And we've had, you know, that we've had Jack go downstairs
- 22:24saying CU, you know, it was nice, whatever.
- 22:28And this is so amazingly great. And when Rose looks around the
- 22:35corner of the console later, you know, waiting for something to
- 22:39happen. It's so good.
- 22:41It's so great. I just gotta go out and pull
- 22:44these leavers. There's something about yes.
- 22:47Nice toss. Yeah yeah.
- 22:51Got ya is what is a kid? Yeah.
- 22:53Yeah. He just stops and like all of
- 22:55that fan has drained from his face and he's doing this thing
- 22:59and as he's doing it look look at her.
- 23:02She's looking around waiting for him to come back in.
- 23:04Haiti is still a holding the button waiting for him to come
- 23:07back. It's Mickey isn't it?
- 23:12What they did to make it? No, that's later that's in.
- 23:16Rise of the Cybermen, where Mickey's been holding down the
- 23:19control for half an hour because the doctor forgot to tell him to
- 23:23let go of when the Hologram in, it looks straight at the
- 23:27audience know that. I think I tear up then because
- 23:35it's it's not just that because the Hologram is all kind of like
- 23:40the Holograms in Star Wars, you know.
- 23:42It's flickering and there's interference patterns and stuff
- 23:44like that. And then suddenly he decides to
- 23:47dump all of those interference patterns, he's in close up
- 23:51rather than, you know, a long distance away.
- 23:54Like we've see a long shot of the Hologram here but then
- 23:57suddenly he just turned straight to camera.
- 23:59There's none of the interference patterns or anything like that,
- 24:02it's a perfect hologram and he just says, have a fantastic
- 24:06life. And and that's the thing that
- 24:11doctor who is about in this era in a way like, I think, and And
- 24:16it loses even your best life. Yeah.
- 24:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:20Yeah. You know the docs are taught me
- 24:23a better way of living my life through the motions.
- 24:27Well, I mean let's go back to Clara and Capaldi.
- 24:29Again, we're being with the doctor is like a destructive
- 24:32addiction that will eventually be men.
- 24:36Yeah, yeah, where they have a toxic relationship with each
- 24:38other and that has its do that and she reacts she reacts to
- 24:44the, it's the Voice treatment. Isn't that?
- 24:47Like the voice treatment changes to?
- 24:49Yeah it's very it's very clear. What's up?
- 24:52Yeah, desperation here. Yes.
- 24:58She's literally just beating up the console.
- 25:00This isn't. Yeah.
- 25:03She's really good. Like, she just, hey, solutely
- 25:06going for it. But, you know this, okay, so
- 25:09this stark contrast of the station, the Tardis, and then
- 25:12this concrete block this girl. Yeah, I think it just
- 25:17encapsulating rusty Davis's, Dr. Who that's where the saw, the
- 25:21Fantastical, and the mundane. And the urban this happens a few
- 25:25times. Now we go back.
- 25:26To the Daleks attacking people. And then suddenly there's a shot
- 25:29of roast chickens honest. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:33Yeah. And it's just a mixture of the,
- 25:36to the Rusty family stuff. Really.
- 25:39He's also canceled, but I still love the character.
- 25:45I'm I do too. I think he's magnificent and I
- 25:48think null does a great job like a really, really properly could
- 25:53job. And can you even like where it's
- 25:56like, Character in the series while yeah, where he's talking
- 26:00Rose was interesting, what? That recording block was a
- 26:03problem, wasn't it? And I like to blame Keith Keith,
- 26:07a good director is not very good, but but, you know, like
- 26:12he's really good and by the Cyberman, two-parter, you know,
- 26:17or even even that Moffat episode, where he kind of joins
- 26:20in is, it's really terrific - I've been doomsday, you know,
- 26:24where p and Jackie are. In the corridor, and he's just
- 26:28standing there against the wall with his arms folded.
- 26:30Loving the whole thing playing out.
- 26:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ari's Come Blow.
- 26:35Look at that Daleks ghoulish, isn't it?
- 26:38That's really good. Yeah, it's great.
- 26:41You know, and we need more puppets.
- 26:44I want more puppet monsters on Doctor Who and here is a
- 26:47fantastic puppet monster. Let's just really properly, well
- 26:51realized it's great. I like the shorthand between
- 26:54doctor and Jack as well. He basically just said, Says
- 26:56that Rose has gone, she's out of the way.
- 26:58Let's do this thing. You know, there's no arguing no
- 27:02and the doctor knows what I mean.
- 27:04Jack knows what the doctor has done without even needing to be
- 27:08told, and he approves of it, like, he predicted it would be
- 27:13like, right, well so I tricked her.
- 27:15I sent her in the time and we would have had an argument about
- 27:19it. But like so here's the doctor
- 27:25being where we Setting it up where the doctor makes the has
- 27:29to make the same choice that he made in the time or.
- 27:32Yeah. And what, and also been
- 27:34avoiding, he's been avoiding making big choices at the climax
- 27:38throughout the entire season. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:40Yeah. We made it go that people do
- 27:42stuff. Yeah.
- 27:43And I think we need to do that and I don't think I think that
- 27:47Moffat is still right that. There's a problem and The Day of
- 27:52the Doctor is the right time to deal with it, to get it to
- 27:55replay itself. Elf and in the usual Moffat e
- 27:58way. It's kind of like, will it's a
- 28:00story. So let's do a narrative.
- 28:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. It like I've, you know,
- 28:17Gallifrey yeah, you can do you think Russell will destroy
- 28:22Gallifrey again like when he comes back?
- 28:24I love you. Oh, so like Alternate the
- 28:28chickens. Oh yeah, I love it.
- 28:31This whole Secrets. I taste, my dear friend.
- 28:35Fraser Gregory valency update. This, he's absolutely is
- 28:39absolutely wrong about this thinks she's better than.
- 28:44And she never says that she never once has actually says,
- 28:47I've got you expect a way of living at my wife.
- 28:49She likes blissett. Lee doesn't say that she
- 28:53explicitly. Doesn't it like she explicitly
- 28:54says, no, not that. That she just loves you.
- 28:57It's not about aliens. It's not about planets.
- 29:00It's about who I am when I'm with ya.
- 29:04That's great sitting here eating chips and far out.
- 29:08I can't say how much I love Camille, Could you?
- 29:13Hurry, I just think she's so so good like in this whole thing
- 29:18and it is, you know, she's the most comedy character in it but
- 29:23she has real interior already and real, real heart.
- 29:28And, you know, I could choose a top ten come here.
- 29:33A jury moment says, just too many to fit when you realize
- 29:36she's in the Tardis and I'll be a ghost.
- 29:39Yeah, I think I think love and monsters is unbelievably great
- 29:44like it when she finds a picture.
- 29:46Yeah, yeah. But even before that even before
- 29:49that when she spills the drink on Elton because she's being
- 29:53flirty and silly and then realizes that that was wrong and
- 29:57a bit pathetic, you know. And realizing why she's behaving
- 30:01like this or even The moment know what the meaning of the
- 30:05Christmas Invasion beginning of the Christmas Invasion where she
- 30:08just has the Christmas present for Rose and puts it down.
- 30:12Oh yeah. Now I love the bit where he's
- 30:14like any distinguishing features.
- 30:16Yeah a fire extinguisher break your heart.
- 30:24Make you belly. Yeah yeah well it's that thing
- 30:28you know people have rightly said the doctor who wouldn't
- 30:30have lasted as long as it did. If it hadn't been for In for
- 30:35Jackie heels Barbara because she grounds the show and stands up
- 30:41to the dock is just tremendous I do too and I but I would say the
- 30:45same thing for Camille. I just think that she grounds
- 30:51this show and makes like this is a show with like stupid CGI.
- 30:57Daleks pouring out of a over being even but it's incredible.
- 31:03Hot. But the show only works as
- 31:06something that just an audience, a big Mass audience of millions
- 31:11of people on Saturday night. I was watching this are about
- 31:14the people because there's recognizable people in it is
- 31:17it's not space, but he did. That deliberately didn't.
- 31:20Answer is why every episode in some way on Earth.
- 31:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. Gets you know, it's this thing
- 31:30where they're making this show in.
- 31:33Secret with no idea of how it's going to be received.
- 31:36If it's even going to get a second season and they're super
- 31:39careful, not to alienate this material.
- 31:43They must have no empty child doctor dances this.
- 31:46Yeah, surely. But you know, like the Sylvester
- 31:50McCoy era, was brilliant. Not as brilliant as this but
- 31:53brilliant in classic Doctor Who terms and no one gave a shit.
- 31:56You know, like it wasn't you know like it didn't have to
- 32:00work. No and they try really.
- 32:03Hard to make it work and I think the pressures off in the series
- 32:07to to some degree. And it's still hugely popular
- 32:12and that's pretty great season. But you can see that they don't
- 32:16feel. They have to quite go to those
- 32:18lengths to sell it to the audience, they kind of assume
- 32:21that it's all. Okay.
- 32:23I think these hundreds of dollars pouring into this set.
- 32:27Yeah. There's apps that the effects
- 32:32like come on, or are they did not have a massive budget.
- 32:35I just think it's extra, probably hundreds of Daleks
- 32:38either. It's the meaning was working
- 32:39Round the Clock. Eric, right?
- 32:41Yeah. But they weren't they,
- 32:42apparently they were just so desperate to make this as good
- 32:45as it can possibly be. Yeah.
- 32:47That was a labor of love, wasn't it?
- 32:49Oh God. You know what?
- 32:50Being a minute that? I mean it's one thing after
- 32:52another these seats. But the bit where she tells
- 32:56Jackie that she saw pain, Emotional runs through that
- 33:01scene where she's like you know Jack like stop it.
- 33:05She's like that's how good the doctor is.
- 33:08Yeah yeah. Well in up here.
- 33:10It's really good. Isn't it?
- 33:11And yeah. Oh no.
- 33:16He's gonna do what he's doing that.
- 33:17Wonderful thing. The five doctors they're
- 33:19throwing the dark shadow on the wall before you see it.
- 33:22I love that. Yeah.
- 33:26And you've got Joe, join us character, basically saying,
- 33:28where they are? Are in the station.
- 33:32Yeah, yeah. Like she's basically there to
- 33:34get bet to kind of, you know, to sort of explain it.
- 33:40Ha ha. Wow and so they were lasers that
- 33:43were going to explode them all but they never they never they
- 33:46never work. Are we get a Eric's a would
- 33:49reference up here somewhere? She not think it's fabulous that
- 33:51they are bullets so far for the laser guns.
- 33:54Yeah. But they are bastok bullets
- 33:56which are excited invented for revelation of the Daleks going
- 34:03back to what you were saying earlier about.
- 34:04You know, you can fill the screen for the dialect, but
- 34:07unless you have no characters that you care about, About then
- 34:10it is just, you know, a lot of matching that's resurrection of
- 34:12the Daleks in it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:15But also the Daleks are kind of boring in that.
- 34:17They're just another group of people with guns.
- 34:19Whereas here, there really kind of Epic.
- 34:21Like they pose a massive massive and very clear and obvious
- 34:25threat. It's kind of like, but also
- 34:28they're sending Androids to impersonate.
- 34:30The doctor to kill the time Lords.
- 34:31It's like really, I couldn't possibly care less about that
- 34:36right? Is that Rusty Davis uses a plot
- 34:39point from Edge Of Destruction about the heart of the TARDIS
- 34:43and yeah. A group so they say that yeah
- 34:46yeah yeah yeah hello. Mickey Mickey's Mickey's got a
- 34:50new car hmm. Remember the yellow Volkswagen
- 34:54he had an episode 1 and now he's got to meet you.
- 34:58Yeah I think that's maybe very excited that Rusty Davis has
- 35:02gone from you know, given us you know, farting aliens and burping
- 35:07bins and getting all the kids nice and comfortable.
- 35:10Yeah and now he's delivering this a fucking Massacre.
- 35:18It's so the Android. Yes, yeah, yeah, she's gone.
- 35:33Wow. Yeah.
- 35:35All right. Blows up in the air as well.
- 35:36That's better. Yeah, that is pretty great.
- 35:39By all accounts, you know, Russell Davis.
- 35:40And Phil Coulson said that when they met with a, they were
- 35:44calling that Miss Robinson or the time, and she said, they
- 35:47were looking at her, like they were, like they were mad, but
- 35:49they were outside. Hello, Miss Robinson.
- 36:00Yeah. Yeah they go.
- 36:03They've gone down and so the Daleks disappeared to be in the
- 36:09time war that. So no one believes that the
- 36:11Daleks exist because they went off to fight the time or and so
- 36:15they are no longer a thing and then I guess the doctor
- 36:19destroyed them and no one knows about it.
- 36:22Oh my God. And so that's her.
- 36:24Yeah. She's adjusting the Monitor and
- 36:25stuff and yeah. Buildable.
- 36:31Oh my God. Oh my goodness.
- 36:33She's good. Sorry good and the big West well
- 36:37it's coming off there. Yeah.
- 36:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:41But our in staff read about it. I was so shocked.
- 36:44You know rapidly of Jojo. Yeah it's really.
- 36:50So here we go. Right heading into this
- 36:51fabulous. See that with rows.
- 36:52And yeah. Yeah and so because there's
- 36:56something like I think father's days are magnificent Episode and
- 37:01having this be in some way like I haven't get involved here.
- 37:06So Jackie has always told rose that her father was a an amazing
- 37:14guy and then she goes back and sees that she was going to break
- 37:19up real nice for having a thought it was a massive loser
- 37:22and stuff. They find you trust me.
- 37:26All right. Yeah yeah.
- 37:27Yeah. And then and then Having her
- 37:31tell Jackie that she was the blond woman.
- 37:37Do you remember it? It's so clever because that
- 37:39story starts with her telling the story and it was as though
- 37:45there was no one there and the boys stops like the boy.
- 37:49Oh, it's all, it's all your eyes.
- 37:53Chin forgiveness. Yeah, it's that thing.
- 37:56Whether the boy, who kills him in the revised, Timeline stops,
- 38:02and it was a mistake and Jackie's forgiven him.
- 38:05It was an accident like, rather than a hit-and-run, it's so
- 38:08good. So good.
- 38:09Here we go. We've just destroyed Europe and
- 38:12they goes North America is Australia, all of Europe.
- 38:15I'll spit baby. Looks like they'd Square.
- 38:17They just do Australian after that in the shot afterwards.
- 38:22I mean, they show it as a melting map but like there's a
- 38:25lot of people dying. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:29But You know, I think that that's probably as explicit as
- 38:33we want it to be. Do not a main and the guys are
- 38:37dead. I've created heaven on Earth.
- 38:40Yeah, yeah yeah. Yeah, because he's a religious
- 38:43Maniac. That's the thing.
- 38:44You know, the Daleks of crazed. I love this bit worried because
- 38:49of you and she goes, well, you know, I'm not cut out and then
- 38:58she dies and then Then he's like plist over the wine.
- 39:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:04If these characters these moments we didn't have these
- 39:06moments in Resurrection of the Daleks.
- 39:08Wow that's part of the problem, isn't it?
- 39:10Yeah. Lies like it not buyer would be
- 39:13better directed towards the end against Vladimir doctor but you
- 39:17know, it's because he can do this so skillfully and so
- 39:20quickly, it doesn't take a lot of time for him to do the thing.
- 39:24And now he's still have vivid characterization.
- 39:30Yeah, false incredibly good track.
- 39:33He waits and nobody's saying, you know what?
- 39:37I'm talk to who, you know, it's wonderful but it's, she's
- 39:41borrowed, it off Rodrigo who she's clearly having a
- 39:44relationship with at the moment. She's having a relationship with
- 39:48somebody but don't ask me why. Yeah yeah, it's so good but
- 39:54she's with someone else by the Christmas Invasion.
- 39:57She's with the guy who gives her the satisfaction Zoomers.
- 40:01That's right. He's got a minute.
- 40:04Yeah, yeah, yeah. People there beyond that tiny
- 40:12little pathetic barricade. Well, those Daleks coming in.
- 40:15Yeah, you know what, we haven't even talked about the redesign
- 40:19dialects, which it's really good.
- 40:24Yeah, and time rivet, some things like that, just make it,
- 40:28it was manufactured is so, yeah, Yeah.
- 40:30So it makes them more tank-like without changing the the
- 40:34silhouette and I think the big thing about the Daleks is the
- 40:37silhouette and the proportions have to be right.
- 40:39So what he does is there exactly the same but they're just more
- 40:43detailed and they seem more like tanks and Moffat.
- 40:48Like I don't think that it was moffatt's idea.
- 40:51I'm sure that he was as horrified as everyone else.
- 40:52When he finally saw those red all I kind of like the minister.
- 40:57Did you ever you see that confidential We're aiming P
- 41:01Cusack you know desired products and they bring, I bring the new
- 41:05Dalek ID to show you and you know he's a fabulous old crank
- 41:08in he's really durable down and he goes what you've ruined.
- 41:13It, haven't you. They still put it into the
- 41:16confidential. That's brilliant.
- 41:19Yeah, I have. Okay, I'll just about the
- 41:21direction in this scene, where they cut, open the door.
- 41:25And you absolutely think this is how she's gonna go.
- 41:28Yes. Yeah, Have you seen this?
- 41:32We've seen this done. So many times someone cutting
- 41:35through a door, but I don't think it's ever ever been done
- 41:38better than this. It looks like really, really,
- 41:41really real. It's always been like a bit of
- 41:43an effects shot in Planet of the Daleks and diet so I guess but
- 41:47it's always rafted as drama. Yeah, yeah, but it's also like
- 41:52always like a heated Rod going through polystyrene as well.
- 41:55Whereas, this looks as much more convincing and then this, holy
- 42:00Shit. And the idea, the most
- 42:03brilliant, simple idea that we will, we know they're saying
- 42:08exterminate because of the rhythm of the lights and that
- 42:13Jesus Christ and you come away from her.
- 42:16Yeah, yeah, God just like sorry to make this mobile a comic one
- 42:23but Steven Alexander was convinced.
- 42:24The Dalek says, let me in and not external.
- 42:31How are you? What are you watching on TV?
- 42:39No, but I actually really love how this is Chinese chain and
- 42:47I'm from the Tardis console. I don't really get it to because
- 42:50those those Hall things do have a big chain with a thing but it
- 42:54wouldn't be that. But I actually I actually love
- 42:57how kind of, I guess we have to think maybe the chain will break
- 43:03and maybe that's it. But I actually love that they
- 43:06just manage to pull it open with a fucking please.
- 43:08Trust energy going into Rose and she goes all glowy.
- 43:12I that it absolutely reminds me of that and too serious for of
- 43:16Buffett. Remember when they put and the
- 43:18initiative and they put all this, she came out was
- 43:23deflecting bullets and all sorts it.
- 43:25I think Russell. Yeah, we watched a lot of
- 43:27buffing so he does pull this trick again, at one of the end
- 43:31of one of the series of wizards. Vs.
- 43:35Aliens as well, doesn't he? I think we're all the magic goes
- 43:39into Tom and he becomes a super all-powerful because No, I don't
- 43:48think we do. I'm glad they go there because,
- 43:54you know, like, it makes this incredibly Bleak, doesn't it?
- 43:58Look, it's so good, isn't it? And in fact, do you see how that
- 44:02would look like there's blood running down that were behind
- 44:04him? Yeah, although yeah, maybe
- 44:08that's blood, although they are kind of doing Rusty, you know,
- 44:12turning these Flats into rusty metal, And I say those Daleks in
- 44:17silhouette with the glowing liar.
- 44:19It's dark. It's really good.
- 44:23Isn't it? That just that they like the
- 44:24front of them is dark. They're not lit from the front,
- 44:26a little it from around a behind.
- 44:28They look so good. He was just convinced he was
- 44:32determined. Sorry to scare the shit out you
- 44:35of the Daleks this year was amazing and I feel like yeah,
- 44:37subsequent episodes. I've failed to capture this.
- 44:41Yeah. And it's a clear reaction
- 44:45against the fact that The Daleks kind of ridiculous in the in the
- 44:48classic series and there's three of them, you know, and or five,
- 44:52you know, at the most and so, you know, being able to
- 44:56duplicate the making them look solid and making them win.
- 45:00You know. Putting them in a situation
- 45:01where they actually, we, in indolic of turning that Dalek
- 45:05into a character. Yeah.
- 45:08Over the just a drone, you know. Yeah.
- 45:11I mean, I think Rob's to him, and that's how it's do with that
- 45:13as well. Oh, absolutely.
- 45:15Lutely. But I don't think the Daleks
- 45:18like I like the Daleks in the finale of the next season
- 45:24because their appearance is so unexpected because we're all
- 45:28Cyberman, you know? And then suddenly the dogs
- 45:31appear at the Cliffhanger and they are pretty great but I
- 45:34don't think there ever is good again.
- 45:36As they are here. I don't think the new series
- 45:39ever ever does properly good job of the Daleks after this.
- 45:43And I know we've But it's off Bottle Shop.
- 45:46Not let me walk through the day without trying to do all sorts
- 45:49with them and it never excited. Well he never writes a story
- 45:53where he's particularly interested in the Daleks and
- 45:55that's one of the things he's not actually particularly
- 45:58interested in Monsters apart from, you know, like, you know,
- 46:02he creates The Silence of the weeping angels and stuff, but
- 46:05he's more interested in plotting things and characters and stuff
- 46:09like that. He doesn't care about monsters.
- 46:12I do like that desperate a lead but that desperate darling,
- 46:15moving In resolution though? Who wants to build himself?
- 46:19Yeah. But a lot of that is just
- 46:20borrowed from Dalek isn't it? And like I'd give no specialty
- 46:24that? Yeah I mean I think there are
- 46:26moments in that special that are not bad but on the whole I don't
- 46:31think it's very good. I regard super Rose.
- 46:37Yeah. Yeah yeah yeah.
- 46:42But when he says come here you It's so good.
- 46:49It's so good. And, you know, like all of the
- 46:51people who don't want there to be romance between the doctor
- 46:54and the companion and whatever and what the doctor to be like,
- 46:56totally sexless and things, you know, they can still imagine
- 47:00that. There's a special science
- 47:02fiction thing where you had to suck like it went into her eyes.
- 47:07I don't know why they're trying to suck it out of her eye is but
- 47:10whatever. He's just getting his rocks off
- 47:14in that one. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:15Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:18I bet Frosty flavors watched all my gosh of Darkness against that
- 47:21true. Well, yes, I reckon he said,
- 47:24let's do it properly, you know, laid some actually properly, do
- 47:27it this time. And I love that moment.
- 47:32I just he ceased and credible dais like, another, is it?
- 47:36Oh yeah, literally. But, but it doesn't come out of
- 47:40nowhere, you know? Like it comes out of me.
- 47:45He and Jackie rather than failing, kind of butthurt
- 47:51because Rose is, you know, because they're worried about
- 47:53their negative about the rose going, going with the doctor,
- 47:58you know, Jackie's warned, warned her about it.
- 48:03Mickey says you're going to die if you go back there and she
- 48:07says I'm going to do it anyway and they love Rose and so they
- 48:11help they love Rose and they recognize that this is what she
- 48:14really wants. I wish that we'd seen more of
- 48:17these ships. We see one ship, kind of explode
- 48:19like disappear that way, and it makes me think.
- 48:22Is there just one ship then? Now, let's label for.
- 48:26Yeah, I think they would have tried to make it.
- 48:28So you don't know that characters.
- 48:29Hey, to make about father, all of this has been established in
- 48:32the Caesar the doctor? Hell yeah, the waist.
- 48:35Yeah, he and Jackie been set up in previous episodes.
- 48:39Yeah, you know caring about Rose, robbing the adventure, the
- 48:43heart of the TARDIS will set up in boo.
- 48:45Town. Like it's all.
- 48:46Yeah, yeah, yeah. If Emily's pieces are bad,
- 48:49wreck. Everything comes together.
- 48:50Father's Day long, game, everything.
- 48:52You know, like it's all here. It's so good.
- 48:57It's such a good summary without, you know, I don't know.
- 49:01It's not a comfortable on fuss roses got this.
- 49:03Fabulous glowing eyes going on. She's a superbeing right now,
- 49:06but she's wearing a top. That says, Punky fish on the
- 49:08back. Yeah.
- 49:15When I smoke, you know, it's all done in silhouette.
- 49:18Isn't it? Awesome lovely.
- 49:19Yeah, yeah. And then thing about the doctor
- 49:23being able to see that all the time.
- 49:24That's what he sees all the time.
- 49:26That remember that turn of the earth happened to that road
- 49:29rage. Yeah, yeah, that's so good off
- 49:32and get that Glimpse inside. You know how he experiences
- 49:36things. Look at that kiss.
- 49:39That's a proper kiss. All right.
- 49:43Yeah. Yeah, then there's no mistaking
- 49:48that the same thing in empty child got Stars they what he's
- 49:52taped sending all that Nanobots of pixie dust coming out of
- 49:56Christopher Eccleston. Yeah.
- 50:01Wow he still seems butchers hell.
- 50:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:04Well there's that there's this moment here where he's just
- 50:07staggers, like, his eyes like his eyes.
- 50:10He knows doesn't, he know? Yeah, yeah, yeah it's so good.
- 50:15He's Those, you know. That's right.
- 50:18He blows it out first and then he staggers he blows it back
- 50:20into the into the Tardis, so good.
- 50:24Yeah. And everyone else is buying
- 50:26everyone else's dad wakes up track but we don't know.
- 50:29Where does he go now, does he go back to?
- 50:32This is where he saw as Torchwood?
- 50:34Remember? No, I can't remember either.
- 50:38It's all very complicated and we spent a long time wondering as
- 50:41well, how he got there. We might actually watch that
- 50:45word in order to lower it and I don't really want to do that.
- 50:47I don't think I'll do that. I may watch children of Earth
- 50:50again but I think otherwise I won't although I have a Seek
- 50:55fantasy about one day watching series for watching Miracle Day
- 50:58again, I think was a little underrated you though.
- 51:03It is share the Pines. It's got John de Lancie in it
- 51:08and now the visit on this tight. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:11Trek convention, isn't it? It's got Jane espenson, writing,
- 51:14a really great episode. Here we go.
- 51:17Now, we basically policies in the Tardis is so what judged
- 51:21isn't it? Yeah, yeah, well, I mean he
- 51:25knows Russell knows what has to be done to and in fact, this
- 51:31scene is primarily for the Audience's benefit and not for
- 51:34Roses because Rose is still upset and doesn't properly know
- 51:38what's going on as if you know she hadn't listened to this and
- 51:42you know that's right. And he he's trying you know it
- 51:50looks the same looks like he's trying to reassure a rose that
- 51:53it's going to be okay. But what he's really doing is
- 51:56reassuring the audience that it's always looking directly to
- 52:00camera these two. To, even on the same set, okay.
- 52:07I don't have much time together. I think so.
- 52:10Well, there's a shot where she becomes where she wakes up out
- 52:13of unconsciousness. But I don't know.
- 52:16I can't remember how this works because there's all that stuff
- 52:20about, you know, obviously tenant, is there much later and
- 52:24all of that sort of thing and nowhere near this.
- 52:26So it's sort of piece together, an all shot over a distance.
- 52:31It's so good. I just think Piper index them
- 52:35together are gold. Yeah, you know I don't think
- 52:38there's a moment in the series where they don't work together.
- 52:42Yeah. And I think Eccleston is just
- 52:44magnificent. Again, you know, even hadn't
- 52:47been if he hadn't been as good as this we wouldn't have.
- 52:50It's enticing to think about things like the show's net but
- 52:53then I almost wonder like that would it would it would have
- 52:56gone out as well? I don't know.
- 52:59Yeah, yeah, I've got it in. Told you I don't know.
- 53:02What do you just have delivered more?
- 53:04Incredible work? Yeah, I'm like I think Eccleston
- 53:08like I like Eccleston as an actor better than I like tenant.
- 53:12But tenants charm in the role is just you know, inescapable isn't
- 53:18it? He's so good honey.
- 53:20I mean he comes in bursts out of Christopher exit.
- 53:23Now he said hey yeah he's amazing looks like Baby.
- 53:28Doesn't mean. Yeah, I know he's so baby-faced.
- 53:32It's crazy. Oh it's so hot.
- 53:37Here we go. Yes a is the stock standard I'm
- 53:40going to be quirky. Yeah yeah yeah.
- 53:45Ginger still not ginger doesn't like the color of these cuties
- 53:50knees. I mean yeah lucky Jody just goes
- 53:56fantastic. Doesn't shoot some brilliant.
- 54:00Brilliant. Yeah.
- 54:01It's pretty good. Yeah.
- 54:02Thats Right. Thats Smile as well.
- 54:06Holly crap, it's just magnificent.
- 54:15So, that couple of male and female programmer, they do well,
- 54:18the the male programmer gets a name but he doesn't get a name
- 54:21in the closing credits, so good because I was credits go by so
- 54:26fast. You can't see anybody's name
- 54:28anymore. No, that's true.
- 54:30That's true. Yeah, I you know what comes now
- 54:35for you? The children need special.
- 54:43Well, clearly, you not been listening to too many episodes
- 54:45and handsome. A blunt penknife recently have
- 54:47you. Okay, so we have two three,
- 54:51reasons a piece back and forth, start with you.
- 54:59Oh well, just because it's possibly the best story in the
- 55:04run of the show from 1963 onwards and so that's why you
- 55:08should watch it, okay? Well, I need to be a little is
- 55:13your objectives will be a bit more specific, okay?
- 55:21Gonna say because I think it's the most climactic.
- 55:26Doctor Who Adventure? I don't think there's a season
- 55:29that builds to a climax. Yeah.
- 55:31Well after this and the fact they knocked out of the park
- 55:37first time round Bravo notable back to you.
- 55:42Okay. Another reason is that Eccleston
- 55:46and Piper get unjustly overlooked.
- 55:49I think is a tireless team and this is them at their very best.
- 55:53And you know, Go back and visit a time when Doctor Who was fresh
- 56:01and ridiculously popular and unbelievably wonderfully
- 56:05entertaining, you know, when it was being written and run by
- 56:11Just One of the most skilled British TV, writers ever.
- 56:17So, that's another reason. How's that?
- 56:21I'm gonna say those roast chickens on a spit, look.
- 56:25Really entice not. So I'm gonna say they tasted a
- 56:28bit clinical. Yeah.
- 56:30Well that's the coals fall. That's right, you're right.
- 56:34I've we didn't really mention him at all and I'm going to save
- 56:38Marigold who burst into one with some criticism.
- 56:42For some God knows reason why it's Absolutely like scores
- 56:49every scene and deliver the emotion perfectly.
- 56:54So good, it's such a great choice, isn't it Russell at work
- 56:59with Mario and over again. He does Queer as Folk and stuff,
- 57:02and he's picking me back. I'm hoping he will be.
- 57:06I'm hoping like after an absence because he did years and years.
- 57:10Did he do? It's a sin.
- 57:11I can't remember play his music for years of years was just so
- 57:16brilliant. It So brilliant.
- 57:19That was back to you, okay? So I think that like I said
- 57:23before, this is the best Dalek story and it's it's a story
- 57:31where the Daleks are as terrifying and evil as they have
- 57:36ever been. And watch that if you like it,
- 57:41when the dogs aren't crap, personally, I quite like it with
- 57:44the Daleks of crap as well, but if you want to watch them being
- 57:48really good, you could watch this.
- 57:52Well, if you like your other dialects are crap, then I'm sure
- 57:55you'll frequently. You are not disappointed.
- 57:57Yes, the crap quite a lot. I'm going to say because I think
- 58:01a lot of people like love sort of from 2/3 into bad on words.
- 58:07But I think that first Thought through that, where Russell T,
- 58:12Davies is a blast celebrating and ripping the shit out of
- 58:18reality TV simultaneously and turning it into something.
- 58:22So since top, yeah, yeah, that's very, that's all very good.
- 58:28But it's also his incredible skill is to just pivot the tone
- 58:32of a scene, or the tone of something like just so quickly.
- 58:37And so, it goes from being funny to being comedy threatening, you
- 58:42know, with the chainsaw and stuff like that, to being really
- 58:46like, really properly disturbing with the death of Crosby and
- 58:50then absolutely terrifying and heartbreaking with the death of
- 58:53Rose. Like, you know, he's just a
- 58:56master of I enjoying the tone of a scene so quickly, it's so well
- 59:03done you just you know he's magnificent.
- 59:06Incredible Rider. It's genius.
- 59:09Is it that you can't really argue with each other because we
- 59:11both love it, you know. Yeah.
- 59:14So how do you feel about 2023? 2020 is re one Rusty, Dave is
- 59:22coming back. Mmm, if you had told me a year
- 59:26ago that was going to happen, I would have laughed in your face
- 59:29and said 90 million years. If you just had to meet a David
- 59:32Tennant at Catherine Tate, we're going back.
- 59:34Yeah, yeah God just that's my favorite season series for.
- 59:39Yeah right. Yeah.
- 59:42Right yeah absolutely. It's the Heyday of this show.
- 59:45I mean I love season 1 but the end of series for that whole
- 59:49life. Seven or eight episodes.
- 59:51He's the best run that the shows ever had.
- 59:55I think it's incredible. And so to have that back, I just
- 59:58think, you know, and to have Russell back years later when
- 1:00:02his interest in different sorts of tally and has different
- 1:00:06interests as written, lots of different types of things.
- 1:00:08In many ways, he was playing it safe in some of these early
- 1:00:11years. Now, he knows what he can get
- 1:00:14away with well. Yeah, prepare yourselves.
- 1:00:18Yeah, well, I'll tell you what I'm going to say.
- 1:00:21Obviously, thank you very much for your time.
- 1:00:23It's always the greatest pleasure of my life, to talk to
- 1:00:26you about Doctor Who on Star Trek or anything.
- 1:00:29Thankfully, but you and I are both for that adore what's
- 1:00:34coming up in 2023, and I feel like we should make an oral
- 1:00:37contract. Now, that at least one of those
- 1:00:39stories will do one of these hamster commentaries for.
- 1:00:43Oh, okay, yep, I'm absolutely up for that, for sure.
- 1:00:46That is a legal document. Now, thank you very much.
- 1:00:48It's legally. Binding.
- 1:00:50Yep. Yep.
- 1:00:52Thank you very much for your time.
- 1:00:54I mean right now for a yeah when are we doing there just this
- 1:01:01past weekend? I think of Mike but should you
- 1:01:05be featuring a for the myself. There's about 40 old episodes of
- 1:01:10Untitled Star Trek project out there now yeah.
- 1:01:13Yeah I think we're about to episode 46 or something.
- 1:01:17We've been doing it for nearly a year.
- 1:01:19Personal favorite, you know, mileage sub, Rosa still, I do
- 1:01:23like Subrosa a lot because I had covid and was in covid.
- 1:01:28Isolation. And so when I get like super
- 1:01:32shrill, like when I'm in credulous and shrill at how
- 1:01:37something terrible, how terrible something is you can hear the
- 1:01:40covid kind of like, wow, Gulf Coast.
- 1:01:43Yeah, this is Nathan. Absolutely loving everything
- 1:01:51that you see here wherever you want to hear about.
- 1:01:55Yeah, I I think cogenitor any Enterprise episode that we've
- 1:02:00done so far are usually get angry doing.
- 1:02:02Nothing has no. So well I'm going to out as now
- 1:02:10that thank you very much for your time and I'll just say
- 1:02:13until next time. Yeah, I'll see you later.
