- 0:17Speaker 1: about Florida's ceiling. Today, I'm a lot more interested in
- 0:21Speaker 1: talking about the foundation. I already gave you guys my
- 0:25Speaker 1: immediate reaction to what happened in Columbia. You know how
- 0:28Speaker 1: bad it looked. You know the score. You know Missouri
- 0:31Speaker 1: absolutely embarrassed Florida. But after having a little bit of
- 0:34Speaker 1: time to actually, I don't know, process this game, I
- 0:39Speaker 1: think there's some bigger questions we need to ask. Why
- 0:42Speaker 1: was Missouri able to completely eliminate Florida's run game? Why
- 0:46Speaker 1: did a secondary that has already sown some cracks look
- 0:51Speaker 1: even more vulnerable? Why did the defense seem to have
- 0:54Speaker 1: no answers coming out of halftime? Why did the penalties
- 0:58Speaker 1: and discipline issues start piling up when the game got away?
- 1:01Speaker 1: And I think maybe the biggest question of all, when
- 1:04Speaker 1: Florida faced its first real adversity of the season, where
- 1:09Speaker 1: was the leadership? Coach Summerall has talked about this from
- 1:13Speaker 1: the day that he stepped foot in Gainesville. Good teams
- 1:16Speaker 1: can have talented players. Great teams... are led by players.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Great teams police themselves. Great teams don't need the head
- 1:26Speaker 1: coach to fix every problem from the sidelines. And Saturday
- 1:31Speaker 1: was probably the first real test of that philosophy. Florida
- 1:35Speaker 1: had been 4-0. They had just beaten Ole Miss. They
- 1:38Speaker 1: had jumped all the way to number eight in the country.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Jaden Ball was getting all this Heisman attention. Buster Faulkner
- 1:44Speaker 1: is being talked about as the next head coach at
- 1:47Speaker 1: like five different schools. We were talking about Coach Summerall
- 1:50Speaker 1: winning the Dodd Award at the end of the season.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Everybody was telling these guys just how good they were.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Then they went on the road, got hit in the mouth,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and for the first time this season, they had absolutely
- 2:01Speaker 1: no answer. So this good, bad, and ugly is less
- 2:05Speaker 1: about reliving that 45 to 17 ass kicking and more
- 2:10Speaker 1: about figuring out what Saturday told us about this football team.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So let's get into it. The good, unfortunately, guys, is
- 2:19Speaker 1: going to be the shortest section. I'm not going to
- 2:21Speaker 1: force positives into a game where Florida got thoroughly beaten,
- 2:25Speaker 1: but there were a couple. I thought the best stretch
- 2:27Speaker 1: Florida had offensively came midway through the second quarter. Florida
- 2:30Speaker 1: was down 10-3. The run game wasn't working. Missouri was
- 2:34Speaker 1: creating pressure. The offense had gone nowhere for several possessions.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And finally, Aaron Filo settles in. Seven plays, 68 yards.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He finds Dallas Wilson on that slant for the 12-yard touchdown. Suddenly,
- 2:47Speaker 1: it's 10-10. That drive is important because it showed Florida
- 2:50Speaker 1: was capable of moving the ball when it got into
- 2:53Speaker 1: a rhythm. For one possession... They adjusted. They got Philo comfortable.
- 2:58Speaker 1: They got Wilson involved. And they answered. Dallas Wilson finished
- 3:01Speaker 1: with four catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. And
- 3:04Speaker 1: I really do continue to think he's going to become
- 3:06Speaker 1: a bigger and bigger part of this offense. We also
- 3:09Speaker 1: got Tramell Jones hitting TJ Abrams for that late 42-yard touchdown. Now, obviously,
- 3:14Speaker 1: the game was over. I'm not putting lipstick on that.
- 3:17Speaker 1: But those kids matter. In the scheme of this, those
- 3:22Speaker 1: snaps matter for young guys. And if there is anything
- 3:27Speaker 1: useful that you can pull out of a fourth quarter
- 3:30Speaker 1: like that one, I think it is getting those players
- 3:33Speaker 1: real SEC reps. Now, listen, I understand that all of
- 3:36Speaker 1: this is a stretch. You're like, oh, we were getting
- 3:38Speaker 1: beat bad enough that we got an opportunity to give
- 3:40Speaker 1: our backup some play. And like, that's not what I'm saying.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'm just saying, okay, we're in this situation. at least
- 3:47Speaker 1: we can take advantage of letting these young guys get
- 3:49Speaker 1: some practice. And I do think they're important to the
- 3:51Speaker 1: future of this program. So that's an important thing to try.
- 3:57Speaker 1: So I'm also putting Coach Summerall's response after the game
- 4:01Speaker 1: in the good category too. Not because anything that he
- 4:04Speaker 1: says changes what happened, but there really wasn't any excuse
- 4:08Speaker 1: making at all. There was no attempt to pretend Florida
- 4:10Speaker 1: just got unlucky or He called it embarrassing. He said
- 4:13Speaker 1: Florida earned the loss, and he acknowledged something that I
- 4:16Speaker 1: think is really important going forward. A lot of the
- 4:18Speaker 1: problems we saw Saturday were not brand new problems. Florida
- 4:22Speaker 1: had flaws during their 4-0 start. They were just winning
- 4:26Speaker 1: despite them. Summerall said he has not viewed this team
- 4:29Speaker 1: as a complete football team yet, and that some deficiencies
- 4:32Speaker 1: had essentially kind of been masked or covered up by
- 4:35Speaker 1: the winning. Well, Missouri ripped the mask off on Saturday,
- 4:39Speaker 1: and maybe there's some value to that. Because now nobody
- 4:43Speaker 1: can pretend those issues aren't there. They're there. Now let's
- 4:47Speaker 1: go to the bat. Let's start up front. For everything
- 4:50Speaker 1: else that we're going to talk about today, I think
- 4:52Speaker 1: the offensive line might be the most shocking part of
- 4:55Speaker 1: this game. Florida's entire identity through the first four weeks
- 4:58Speaker 1: has been built around running the football. They came into
- 5:01Speaker 1: Columbia averaging 260 rushing yards per game, 11th in the country, 5.9
- 5:06Speaker 1: yards per carry. And Jaden Baugh had become one of
- 5:08Speaker 1: the biggest stories in college football. 600 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns,
- 5:14Speaker 1: second leading rusher in America. Now, Saturday, Florida rushed for
- 5:19Speaker 1: 42 yards total, 25 carries, 1.7 yards per carry. And
- 5:25Speaker 1: Ball had 13 yards on 12 carries. But the number
- 5:29Speaker 1: that really tells the story is this. His first carry
- 5:31Speaker 1: actually went for 12 yards. His final 11 carries, one yard, one.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Missouri completely took away Florida's offensive identity. And what makes
- 5:41Speaker 1: it even worse is Missouri was doing this without its
- 5:44Speaker 1: two starting edge rushers. This wasn't some fully healthy Missouri
- 5:48Speaker 1: front that was overwhelming Florida. They were missing pieces and
- 5:52Speaker 1: they were still able to control the line of scrimmage.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Missouri had 11 tackles for a loss and three sacks.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Ball was getting hit before he could even get started.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And you consistently saw multiple Missouri defenders arriving at the football.
- 6:04Speaker 1: That was probably the biggest difference between what we saw
- 6:07Speaker 1: against Ole Miss and what we saw Saturday. Against Ole Miss,
- 6:10Speaker 1: Florida was the aggressor. Florida was moving people. Florida was
- 6:12Speaker 1: setting the tone. Against Missouri, the Gators were reacting. Summerall
- 6:16Speaker 1: said in his postgame that Missouri played with physicality, swarmed
- 6:20Speaker 1: to the football, and Florida simply didn't execute well enough
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the run game. And once Missouri took ball away,
- 6:25Speaker 1: the whole offense kind of changed. And then the challenge became,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Aaron Philo, can you beat us? And Saturday, he couldn't. Now,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I don't think that Aaron Philo was terrible. I don't
- 6:36Speaker 1: think he is remotely close to the biggest reason that
- 6:38Speaker 1: Florida lost. But I also don't think he played well enough.
- 6:41Speaker 1: 21 of 34, 197 yards, one touchdown, and there were
- 6:46Speaker 1: some opportunities he missed. Summerall talked about one specifically where
- 6:49Speaker 1: Duke was available and Philo didn't let the ball go
- 6:52Speaker 1: because he couldn't see through the pressure. He made the
- 6:54Speaker 1: wrong read a couple times, too. Summerall basically said, you
- 6:57Speaker 1: just have to trust it and rip it. But that's
- 7:00Speaker 1: young quarterback stuff. And I do expect that he'll get
- 7:02Speaker 1: better from that. But this is something Florida needs to
- 7:05Speaker 1: think about moving forward. Because Missouri just put the blueprint
- 7:08Speaker 1: on film. Take Jaden Ball away. Make Florida beat you
- 7:12Speaker 1: another way. Other teams are going to try it. What's
- 7:15Speaker 1: Florida's counter? Because Saturday, there wasn't one. Now, another bad
- 7:20Speaker 1: is the secondary and the lack of adjustments. Listen. Listen.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think we've reached the point where we can officially
- 7:27Speaker 1: call this a major concern for this team. Losing Bryce
- 7:30Speaker 1: Thornton during warm-ups really didn't help. That's a player you
- 7:34Speaker 1: expected to have. That's a player that leads. That's probably
- 7:37Speaker 1: your best DB. You've built the game plan assuming he
- 7:40Speaker 1: would be available. Then minutes before kickoff, he isn't. But
- 7:44Speaker 1: Bryce Thornton being unavailable does not explain Austin Simmons going
- 7:47Speaker 1: for 340 yards, 23 of 30, two touchdowns. And the
- 7:51Speaker 1: first half, I think, is what really bothers me. Simmons
- 7:54Speaker 1: was 16 of 21 for 238 yards before halftime. Missouri
- 7:59Speaker 1: was already showing Florida exactly what the problems were. They
- 8:02Speaker 1: were getting explosive plays. They were winning outside. They were
- 8:04Speaker 1: finding guys in space. They were exploiting leverage. They were
- 8:07Speaker 1: hitting Florida over the top. So you go into halftime.
- 8:10Speaker 1: You have time to talk. You have time to adjust.
- 8:13Speaker 1: You know Missouri is getting the football to start the
- 8:15Speaker 1: third quarter. And then Missouri comes out, six plays, 75 yards, touchdown.
- 8:21Speaker 1: That's a problem. I don't know exactly what Florida changed
- 8:24Speaker 1: schematically at halftime, but whatever the answer was supposed to be,
- 8:29Speaker 1: it didn't work. Missouri looked just as comfortable. Simmons continued
- 8:32Speaker 1: finding explosive plays and Florida continued chasing. I think it's
- 8:37Speaker 1: completely fair to put some of that on the coaching staff.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Players have to execute, you know, absolutely. But when a
- 8:43Speaker 1: quarterback throws for 238 and a half, your job at
- 8:47Speaker 1: halftime is to make him see something different. make him uncomfortable,
- 8:51Speaker 1: make him hold the ball, change the picture. Florida never
- 8:54Speaker 1: really did that. And Summerall himself said afterward that the
- 8:57Speaker 1: issues in the secondary are complicated. It isn't one guy.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It isn't one coverage. Different players are making mistakes on
- 9:05Speaker 1: different snaps. He mentioned discipline and detail and leverage and
- 9:09Speaker 1: losing one-on-one matchups on the perimeter. That's concerning because you
- 9:13Speaker 1: can't fix that with one substitution. There are multiple things
- 9:16Speaker 1: that have to get cleaned up. And it seems like
- 9:18Speaker 1: through multiple players, and they have to get cleaned up quickly.
- 9:22Speaker 1: We're gonna take a short break from this video to
- 9:24Speaker 1: give some love to Alumni Hall. Guys, over 700 of
- 9:27Speaker 1: you have used our code. Make sure you continue to
- 9:31Speaker 1: take advantage of it. It's PEAK15, P-E-E-K-1-5. You can use
- 9:34Speaker 1: it online at alumnihall.com, and listen, it's not just Gator
- 9:38Speaker 1: stuff you can buy, even though I'm sure that's all
- 9:40Speaker 1: you will want to buy, Let's say you have the
- 9:42Speaker 1: misfortune of having a brother-in-law that's a Tennessee fan in
- 9:45Speaker 1: your family like I do. You can buy him stuff
- 9:47Speaker 1: for Christmas on Alumni Hall with our code and still
- 9:50Speaker 1: get the discount. You also can use it in store
- 9:53Speaker 1: in Gainesville. Their store is located on Archer Road. Big
- 9:56Speaker 1: thank you to Alumni Hall for all their support. Make
- 9:58Speaker 1: sure if you do go in there, you tell them
- 10:00Speaker 1: Allie sent you and you use the code PEAK15. That's P-E-E-K-1-5.
- 10:05Speaker 1: We appreciate Alumni Hall for all their support. Now let's
- 10:08Speaker 1: move to the ugly. The ugly for me isn't the
- 10:11Speaker 1: 45 points. It isn't the 561 yards. It isn't even
- 10:12Speaker 1: the 211 yards from Jamal Roberts. The ugliest part of
- 10:18Speaker 1: Saturday was what Florida looked like once Missouri took control
- 10:21Speaker 1: of the game. Because that is where this became more
- 10:24Speaker 1: than an X's and O's problem. That's where I started
- 10:27Speaker 1: wondering about maturity. I talked a lot about maturity this
- 10:30Speaker 1: week and how this was a maturity litmus test. The
- 10:35Speaker 1: game was tied 10-10. Florida was struggling, but they were
- 10:38Speaker 1: right there. Then Missouri gets the touchdown, 17-10. Florida goes
- 10:42Speaker 1: three and out. Missouri gets a field goal before halftime, 20-10.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Then Missouri gets the second half kickoff and immediately goes
- 10:49Speaker 1: 75 yards, 27-10. And from there, it looked like Florida's
- 10:53Speaker 1: composure disappeared. Missed tackles, bad run fits, drop passes, penalties, frustration,
- 10:59Speaker 1: lapses in detail. At one point, Florida didn't even have
- 11:02Speaker 1: the personnel situation handled properly coming out of a quarter break.
- 11:05Speaker 1: You know that drives me absolutely crazy. That's not just
- 11:09Speaker 1: getting beat by a better play. That is mental, that
- 11:11Speaker 1: is discipline, and that is exactly the stuff Summerall talks
- 11:14Speaker 1: about nonstop. He said after the game that what bothered
- 11:17Speaker 1: him wasn't one specific thing. It was lack of execution.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It was lack of discipline. It was lack of detail.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And he said the fact that Florida put less than
- 11:24Speaker 1: its best on the field made him sick. That brings
- 11:28Speaker 1: me to the leadership question. And again, I'm not saying
- 11:30Speaker 1: Florida has no leaders. I don't think that's fair. I
- 11:32Speaker 1: do think that they have some guys that are really
- 11:34Speaker 1: good leaders on this team. We don't know everything that
- 11:37Speaker 1: happens on the sideline, but I do think we have
- 11:40Speaker 1: every right to ask, who stops the avalanche? Because Summerall
- 11:44Speaker 1: has talked so much about player-led teams. He wants the
- 11:48Speaker 1: locker room setting the standard. He wants players holding other
- 11:51Speaker 1: players accountable. Well, Saturday was when Florida needed that. When
- 11:55Speaker 1: it becomes 2010, who grabs the offense? When it becomes 2710,
- 11:59Speaker 1: who gets the defense together? When guys start getting frustrated
- 12:03Speaker 1: and penalties start happening, who gets in somebody's face and says,
- 12:07Speaker 1: we aren't doing this? Where is the calming presence? Where
- 12:11Speaker 1: was the guy who changed the emotional direction of the game?
- 12:14Speaker 1: Leadership is pretty easy when you go out and you
- 12:17Speaker 1: beat Ole Miss 52-28. Everybody's celebrating. Everybody loves everybody. You're
- 12:21Speaker 1: now the number eight team in the country. People are
- 12:23Speaker 1: talking about the playoffs. Ballot's getting Heisman hype. Your coach
- 12:26Speaker 1: is getting national attention. Everybody wants to hear about the
- 12:29Speaker 1: culture then. Leadership matters when none of that is happening.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Leadership matters when you're down three scores on the road.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Leadership matters when the student section is booing you. Leadership
- 12:42Speaker 1: matters when you're angry. That's when somebody has to drag
- 12:46Speaker 1: everybody else back to the standard. And Florida didn't do
- 12:49Speaker 1: that Saturday. Summerall came about as close as a coach
- 12:54Speaker 1: can in saying that exact same thing in the press conference.
- 12:58Speaker 1: He said, I don't know that we're a very mature
- 13:01Speaker 1: team yet. And then he said, we have to grow up.
- 13:04Speaker 1: That's it. That's the story for me. Florida failed the
- 13:07Speaker 1: maturity test. They had been praised all week. They had
- 13:10Speaker 1: risen 13 spots in the rankings. Everything around the program
- 13:13Speaker 1: felt good. And then Missouri put them in an uncomfortable situation.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Florida didn't handle it well. And there's another part of
- 13:20Speaker 1: this that I think is fascinating as well. Look at Missouri.
- 13:23Speaker 1: They had just lost to Mississippi State. They heard criticism
- 13:26Speaker 1: all week. People were questioning Coach Drink. They were questioning
- 13:30Speaker 1: this team. They were questioning whether Missouri could beat anybody
- 13:34Speaker 1: of significance. How many times did we hear, why is
- 13:38Speaker 1: Missouri ranked? They're only ranked to give Florida another ranked win,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and then they'll be out of the top 25. And
- 13:45Speaker 1: what did they do? They responded. Missouri experienced adversity the
- 13:49Speaker 1: week before this game. Florida experienced adversity during this game.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Missouri responded better. That's a lesson. And those two long
- 13:58Speaker 1: Jamal Roberts runs almost sum up the entire thing. On
- 14:01Speaker 1: the 77-yarder, Florida initially had the play bottled up. Then
- 14:06Speaker 1: guys started flowing over the top too early. Roberts sees
- 14:09Speaker 1: the cutback. Gone. Then the 80-yard touchdown. Summerall said it
- 14:13Speaker 1: was essentially one of their basic run fits. Florida had
- 14:16Speaker 1: it fitted. One player leaves his gap. Touchdown. Those are
- 14:20Speaker 1: not talent issues. That is discipline. That is detail. That
- 14:23Speaker 1: is doing your job when you're tired and when you're
- 14:26Speaker 1: frustrated and when you're losing. That is maturity. So now
- 14:30Speaker 1: we get to the part that actually matters. The response.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Florida's 4-1. They are still a good football team. One
- 14:37Speaker 1: afternoon does not erase what happened against Ole Miss. It
- 14:40Speaker 1: does not erase what happened, you know, the first four games.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It doesn't erase what Jaden Baugh's done. It doesn't erase
- 14:46Speaker 1: what Philo's done. doesn't erase everything that Florida has accomplished
- 14:50Speaker 1: so far this season, and it doesn't mean the first
- 14:51Speaker 1: four weeks were fake. But Saturday told us this team
- 14:54Speaker 1: is not where it needs to be yet, and Summerall
- 14:57Speaker 1: knows it. He said something after the game that I
- 14:59Speaker 1: think perfectly describes where Florida is right now. When you win,
- 15:03Speaker 1: sometimes you write a sentence or a page because winning
- 15:06Speaker 1: can hide flaws. When you lose, you write a chapter.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Florida has a chapter to study this week, and there
- 15:12Speaker 1: is plenty in it. The offensive line getting pushed around,
- 15:16Speaker 1: The inability to adjust when Bob was taken away, the secondary,
- 15:20Speaker 1: the defensive adjustments, the penalties, the discipline, and yeah, the leadership.
- 15:25Speaker 1: South Carolina comes to the swamp next. Then the Gators
- 15:27Speaker 1: go to Austin to play Texas. Then George is waiting
- 15:30Speaker 1: down the road. Nobody is going to feel sorry for
- 15:32Speaker 1: Florida because Missouri embarrassed him. And you know what? Maybe
- 15:35Speaker 1: that's a good thing because now we get to find
- 15:37Speaker 1: out what John Summerall's program looks like after he gets embarrassed.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That interests me a whole lot more than what this
- 15:43Speaker 1: team looks like when everybody was telling them how great
- 15:46Speaker 1: they were. Do they get defensive about it? Do they
- 15:48Speaker 1: point fingers? Do they let one bad game become two?
- 15:52Speaker 1: Or do the leaders in that locker room take ownership
- 15:54Speaker 1: of it and make sure Saturday never happens again? That's
- 15:57Speaker 1: the maturity test now. Florida failed the first one. They
- 16:00Speaker 1: get another one immediately. And how they respond is going
- 16:04Speaker 1: to tell us a lot more about this football team
- 16:06Speaker 1: than the number next to their name ever did. Let
- 16:09Speaker 1: me know what you guys think. What concerns you the
- 16:11Speaker 1: most coming out of Ole Miss? Is it the offensive
- 16:13Speaker 1: line or the secondary, the lack of defensive adjustments, maybe
- 16:16Speaker 1: the penalties? Or do you think the Saturday issues stem
- 16:20Speaker 1: from leadership and maturity? Let me know down in the comments.
