- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time presented by
- 0:09Speaker 1: Intuit TurboTax. My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening
- 0:12Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:17Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:19Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:22Speaker 1: a hater. We're going to talk about Hubert Davis in
- 0:25Speaker 1: the only two days you do at your job in
- 0:28Speaker 1: a minute. But first, we're going to talk about the
- 0:30Speaker 1: overall tournament. I was trying to be honest with y'all
- 0:33Speaker 1: on the front end. I don't feel like sometimes y'all
- 0:35Speaker 1: appreciate my honesty in ways that y'all should. But I
- 0:38Speaker 1: really engaged in no college basketball this year. I just
- 0:42Speaker 1: hadn't gotten around to it. But it made the tournament
- 0:44Speaker 1: feel very, very refreshing. Like back in the day, I
- 0:47Speaker 1: would be watching the tournament looking for confirmation as to
- 0:50Speaker 1: whether or not I was right or whether or not
- 0:53Speaker 1: I was wrong. I did not approach the tournament at
- 0:56Speaker 1: all with that because I don't even really have the
- 0:58Speaker 1: right to have any opinion other than I hope the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Duke loses.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But at the same time, some things don't never change, right?
- 1:07Speaker 3: I watched St.
- 1:09Speaker 1: John's and Kansas play on Sunday evening, and the last
- 1:16Speaker 1: 25 years, that right there has been the kind of
- 1:19Speaker 1: game that Bill Self loses.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Like, the one thing that was always great about.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Like, really following college basketball closely, like, I hate him
- 1:27Speaker 1: at the point now where all the cats I knew
- 1:28Speaker 1: just about don't coach no more, except.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Rick.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Barnes is still in the league if you guys didn't know. Anyway,
- 1:37Speaker 1: you could always just, all your decisions were just based
- 1:40Speaker 1: on what coach was it that you did or did
- 1:42Speaker 1: not trust. And Bill Self, a man with two national championships,
- 1:47Speaker 1: absolutely on the do not trust list, consistently on the
- 1:50Speaker 1: do not trust list. And the old pattern used to
- 1:53Speaker 1: be when they were like really, really excellent good. The
- 1:56Speaker 1: pattern used to be, a game that it seemed like
- 2:01Speaker 1: they could lose, but Bill Self was afraid that nobody
- 2:06Speaker 1: would understand it if they did lose it. For example,
- 2:10Speaker 1: they had a year they lost to Bradley in the tournament,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and it was either the next year or the year before,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I can't remember which.
- 2:15Speaker 3: They lost to Bradley, and they lost to Bucknell.
- 2:19Speaker 1: That year when Stephen Curry was lights out in the tournament,
- 2:21Speaker 1: Kansas won the national championship, but they almost shit the
- 2:24Speaker 1: bed against Davidson because it was exactly that sort of game.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And Bill Self would just go into turtle mode and
- 2:30Speaker 1: choke that thing all the way out.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Brian, do you remember Ali Faroukmanesh?
- 2:36Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Northern Iowa's finest.
- 2:38Speaker 1: That was, it was exactly, you see the type of
- 2:41Speaker 1: game I'm talking about here, right?
- 2:42Speaker 4: A game I still remember almost, you know, 15, 20
- 2:45Speaker 4: years later.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Now, Kansas, not as good as they used to be, right?
- 2:49Speaker 1: Which means a game like what against St. John's, where
- 2:51Speaker 1: you're the higher seed, which y'all are really the same. Oh,
- 2:54Speaker 1: that feels like a game that Bill Self will lose.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And I feel like at the end of that game,
- 2:59Speaker 1: they lost on coaching. And what I mean is this, Ryan,
- 3:01Speaker 1: you and I were texting back and forth as this
- 3:03Speaker 1: was going. And I peeped this early in the second half,
- 3:06Speaker 1: where it was like eight minutes in and Kansas had
- 3:08Speaker 1: not committed a foul. That is admirable that you guys
- 3:11Speaker 1: are so dedicated to fair play. On the other hand,
- 3:14Speaker 1: a point was going to come where you, like, kind of,
- 3:18Speaker 1: sort of might need to foul so that you could
- 3:21Speaker 1: get the ball back.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a fundamental misunderstanding of how college basketball works.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Right, and so they get to the end of the game,
- 3:27Speaker 3: and lucky for them, um... Peterson got fouled going to
- 3:31Speaker 3: the basket on that last possession, and he made the
- 3:34Speaker 3: two free throws that are like 12 seconds left. But
- 3:36Speaker 3: they had to go down there and they had to foul,
- 3:38Speaker 3: what was it, four times in a row.
- 3:41Speaker 1: They didn't have to. But the plan was, and it
- 3:43Speaker 1: was understandable, just to kind of delay things for St.
- 3:48Speaker 5: John's.
- 3:48Speaker 3: To go down there and do all that fouling.
- 3:50Speaker 1: But I don't know about you, but it felt to me,
- 3:52Speaker 1: after they had been so keyed up about fouling, the
- 3:55Speaker 1: one message that was then sent to all the players is, okay,
- 3:59Speaker 1: we can't foul no more. We don't have any left.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And it felt like the defenders' number one goal on
- 4:05Speaker 1: that play was not to play defense on the layup,
- 4:09Speaker 1: but simply not to foul.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Right.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And I could be totally wrong about this, right?
- 4:15Speaker 1: Like, maybe I'm being unfair, and it's a confirmation bias
- 4:18Speaker 1: based on 30 years of watching Bill Self basketball and how.
- 4:22Speaker 3: That's made me feel, right? But I didn't... I felt
- 4:25Speaker 3: like that was the wrong play.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Like if you were going to do it like that,
- 4:28Speaker 1: save that last foul until a little bit later. Like
- 4:31Speaker 1: I know, but I get what your fear is. Your
- 4:34Speaker 1: fear is that St. John's is going to throw up
- 4:37Speaker 1: some crazy shot, right? It's the same reason that I
- 4:39Speaker 1: do not approve of fouling when you're up three at
- 4:43Speaker 1: the end.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Cause like in college basketball and in the, in the
- 4:46Speaker 4: NBA or both.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, anywhere. Anything can happen. Just go out there and guard.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But if they were going to do it the way
- 4:52Speaker 3: that they did it, I feel like they should have
- 4:54Speaker 3: just gone ahead and guarded.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Or give St.
- 4:57Speaker 1: John's the ball, let them bring it up the floor,
- 5:00Speaker 1: then foul a little bit later and just put them
- 5:02Speaker 1: in a position where they get one plate. right you're
- 5:07Speaker 1: gonna get the ball in one some side out of
- 5:09Speaker 1: bounds because they didn't have any timeouts nobody had any
- 5:11Speaker 1: timeouts right maybe that's the play for you to make
- 5:15Speaker 1: that's the way that i would have approached it but
- 5:16Speaker 1: anyway bill self right where i left you right you
- 5:20Speaker 1: know what i'm saying like it's all it's it's like
- 5:22Speaker 1: when you go back for high school reunion you know
- 5:24Speaker 1: what i mean like wow you still work there isn't
- 5:28Speaker 1: that something or.
- 5:28Speaker 4: A tv show that's been on for 40 years and
- 5:30Speaker 4: the character is still doing the exact same thing.
- 5:32Speaker 1: It happened look man I watched The Young and the
- 5:35Speaker 1: Restless a lot when I was younger. And one of
- 5:38Speaker 1: the first things I remember from The Young and the
- 5:40Speaker 1: Restless was when Danny and Cricket got married, I believe
- 5:43Speaker 1: in the year 1991. I don't know why, but like
- 5:47Speaker 1: sometime over Christmas, I turned on The Young and the
- 5:50Speaker 1: Restless in 2025.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Ryan.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Danny and cricket were getting married.
- 5:57Speaker 7: Not only were they getting married, their hair, each of
- 6:02Speaker 7: the hair color, exactly the same as it was in 1991.
- 6:06Speaker 7: It is the wildest thing that is like, bring that
- 6:09Speaker 7: shit back.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Right. Just, just, just roll it back over. Okay.
- 6:14Speaker 1: That was kind of how I felt seeing bill self there.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Right. That was what it was. Rick Pitino, by the way,
- 6:24Speaker 3: I always say.
- 6:26Speaker 1: He's as good at coaching college basketball as anybody has
- 6:29Speaker 1: ever been at coaching college basketball. Not really my type
- 6:33Speaker 1: of dude necessarily, though I need to be honest.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And I think.
- 6:39Speaker 1: That man had to sit up in federal court and
- 6:43Speaker 1: tell them about, what was it, 15 seconds or.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Whatever it was.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And look, man, you ain't the only one that's ever
- 6:49Speaker 1: happened to, but you're the only one that I know
- 6:51Speaker 1: of that had to talk about that in court.
- 6:53Speaker 3: As a person that people have heard of. You know
- 6:56Speaker 3: what I'm saying?
- 6:57Speaker 4: Under oath.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That man got fired at Louisville behind something that would
- 7:03Speaker 1: be totally above board now.
- 7:05Speaker 3: The boys could pay for their own strippers now.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Fired at Louisville, sat out, went to Iona, and did
- 7:13Speaker 1: the job there, and then got himself back.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Like, I know that with guys like this in Marriott, and.
- 7:19Speaker 1: People want for lack of a better term, to cancellation
- 7:23Speaker 1: to be permanent. That's never really going to happen for
- 7:26Speaker 1: a guy like him. But we cannot pretend as though
- 7:28Speaker 1: he has not been made to pay over the last
- 7:31Speaker 1: nearly 20 years in various forms and fashions, right?
- 7:35Speaker 3: Like, he's taking it. He is now in the Sweet 16,
- 7:38Speaker 3: and now he's the hero we need.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Okay?
- 7:42Speaker 1: They play Duke next, if you did not know this.
- 7:45Speaker 3: All right?
- 7:46Speaker 5: So.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Get all them jokes out of you right now. You
- 7:48Speaker 3: know what I'm saying? We all do it for Louis Carteseca.
- 7:52Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 7:55Speaker 1: And Patino need to put on a sweater to remind
- 7:57Speaker 1: us of the good old days and go ahead and
- 8:00Speaker 1: do that, right? We got that from the tournament. I'm
- 8:02Speaker 1: going to tell you about something I saw in the tournament, Ryan.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw this. Well, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: my good buddy Charlie Kravitz, he is a Vanderbilt grad.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And I watched the Vanderbilt-Nebraska game, and I did not
- 8:13Speaker 1: see the end of it.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I hear that the end of that game was quite thrilling.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Insane. Say it again? Insane.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Oh, it was?
- 8:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I just, I crashed out. I didn't, I didn't
- 8:22Speaker 3: get to it. I was working on something else.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I didn't, I didn't, I felt like Nebraska was going
- 8:27Speaker 1: to win and I didn't really care who did at
- 8:29Speaker 1: that point.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I've been watching a lot of basketball.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 8:32Speaker 1: But anyway, I looked up at a moment and I
- 8:35Speaker 1: had to tell Charlie Kravitz something because at that time
- 8:37Speaker 1: Vanderbilt was losing badly and I looked up on the
- 8:40Speaker 1: screen and I told Charlie Kravitz what I saw and
- 8:43Speaker 1: I saw that his school was losing to a team
- 8:47Speaker 1: that have five white dudes on the floor at the
- 8:49Speaker 1: same time. I ain't never seen no real team do that. Like,
- 8:55Speaker 1: not after high school. You know what I mean by
- 8:57Speaker 1: a real team. Like, I'm not talking about, like, the
- 8:59Speaker 1: Ivy League schools or nothing like that.
- 9:01Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Like, a team that's actually out here trying to win
- 9:06Speaker 1: basketball games.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Not prove a point. Win basketball games.
- 9:10Speaker 1: They have five white dudes out there, and not one
- 9:14Speaker 1: of them had no fade.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Wasn't no John B. shit going on, neither. It was Nebraska.
- 9:18Speaker 1: They look like five white boys that went to Nebraska.
- 9:21Speaker 1: They look like they went to intramurals. And it was like,
- 9:24Speaker 1: bring us your best five. And they came out there.
- 9:27Speaker 3: And I just want to say, they are going to
- 9:28Speaker 3: the Sweet 16, okay? Fred Hoiberg, and I know people
- 9:32Speaker 3: will see that and be like, oh, of course, no, no, no.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I saw Fred Hoiberg's teams at Iowa State. They ain't
- 9:37Speaker 3: look like this, right?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Apparently Jimmy Butler broke him like Patrick Ewing broke Don Nelson.
- 9:42Speaker 1: When Don Nelson got back to the Mavericks and started
- 9:46Speaker 1: coaching them, it was like, I will never coach a
- 9:47Speaker 1: black man taller than me ever again. He had had
- 9:50Speaker 1: enough of that shit for what happened when they ran
- 9:53Speaker 1: him off that job in New York.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Anyway, I ain't never seen that. And I bring that
- 9:58Speaker 3: up simply to say, I've been looking around. I saw Purdue.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And I guess this ain't that much different for Purdue.
- 10:05Speaker 1: But I seen a few different teams. And I think
- 10:09Speaker 1: we're not talking about it just because people are greedy
- 10:12Speaker 1: and they expect there to be stars. But Ryan, I
- 10:14Speaker 1: feel like the depth of the Caucasus River is deeper
- 10:18Speaker 1: than it has been in college basketball in quite a while.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of them out there.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I mean, going back to St. John's.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:27Speaker 4: The guy that made the layup.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Man, Purdue had one, and I'm going to be honest.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I don't really know nothing about the dude, okay? I
- 10:33Speaker 1: think his name was Fletcher. And he was good enough
- 10:37Speaker 1: that he got to do the post-game interview, right? And
- 10:40Speaker 1: I looked at his face while he did the post-game interview,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and I knew it immediately. I was like, and I
- 10:45Speaker 1: heard the way the announcers were big-upping him, and I.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Was like, I guarantee you.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I guarantee you that boy is an asshole. And he
- 10:53Speaker 1: walked off with that straight face. He ain't smiling at
- 10:55Speaker 1: interview and they just beat Miami. And so he got
- 10:58Speaker 1: done with that interview. He looked at the crowd with
- 11:00Speaker 1: a snarl on his face.
- 11:02Speaker 3: It took the you. and turned it upside down. They
- 11:05Speaker 3: ain't even y'all's rivals, right? I was like, ooh, asshole
- 11:10Speaker 3: white boys are coming back to basketball, huh? Duke ain't
- 11:13Speaker 3: really have no time for y'all. Y'all started to get
- 11:17Speaker 3: bad for business because it was a few too many
- 11:19Speaker 3: of them all at one time. Are we sprinkling them
- 11:22Speaker 3: about America?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Because I got to say, basketball with a little race play.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Is just a little bit more fun. Everybody knows it.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Nobody wants to say it, but it feels as though
- 11:35Speaker 1: the Caucasians are coming back around.
- 11:40Speaker 3: They making things happen out there. Let me tell you
- 11:42Speaker 3: who is not buying into the Caucasian revolution, by the way,
- 11:45Speaker 3: Rick Pitino.
- 11:46Speaker 4: No.
- 11:47Speaker 3: He is not buying into it. And also, let me
- 11:50Speaker 3: tell you who else is not buying into it. John Calipari.
- 11:53Speaker 4: No.
- 11:54Speaker 3: John Calipari got away from Kentucky and was like, never,
- 11:58Speaker 3: never again.
- 11:58Speaker 2: No.
- 12:00Speaker 3: He may have had one in Arkansas last year I
- 12:01Speaker 3: didn't know about. Let me be careful.
- 12:03Speaker 1: But let me tell you what has been striking because
- 12:05Speaker 1: he's going in the Sweet 16. And by the way,
- 12:06Speaker 1: Kentucky is not. They needed a breakup. We will get
- 12:10Speaker 1: to that Kentucky point in just a second. But that
- 12:15Speaker 1: is a John Calipari team.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, you can tell that by the point guard who
- 12:19Speaker 4: can get to the rim anytime they need a basket.
- 12:21Speaker 4: He's had for almost 30 years now.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Somebody described it to me like this, and I think
- 12:26Speaker 1: that this is the most appropriate. He was like, He's
- 12:29Speaker 1: got a great point guard and a team full of motherfuckers.
- 12:32Speaker 1: That is what John Calabar is here to show up with.
- 12:35Speaker 1: A guy that can go get buckets and a bunch
- 12:38Speaker 1: of tough kids who go hard. And it's kind of
- 12:42Speaker 1: hard to coach to that model at Kentucky because the
- 12:46Speaker 1: ambitions are just a little bit higher, right? Like the
- 12:50Speaker 1: people who act like Cal couldn't coach, all Cal could
- 12:52Speaker 1: do is recruit. Man, Cal was out here whooping ass
- 12:55Speaker 1: with Lou Roe. as the best player on the team,
- 12:58Speaker 1: like those UMass squads. Go look at those teams at Memphis.
- 13:04Speaker 1: He was an excellent coach at his best, and time
- 13:10Speaker 1: was up for him in Kentucky. The idea that he
- 13:11Speaker 1: came to Kentucky and said, Arkansas wants to give me
- 13:14Speaker 1: a job, and they were like, so why don't.
- 13:15Speaker 3: You take it? Right?
- 13:20Speaker 1: He's in the Sweet 16. Kentucky got the doors blown
- 13:24Speaker 1: off by Iowa State. Cal out there again wearing a
- 13:27Speaker 1: suit jacket that screams out, I am the head coach
- 13:30Speaker 1: of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
- 13:33Speaker 3: But it's fun to see them back.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:37Speaker 3: It's fun to be there.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Yeah, this time of year you want to see Cal.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Yep, but you know what that means.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It won't be long before this team is eliminated from
- 13:44Speaker 1: the tournament in a game in which they shot something
- 13:47Speaker 1: in the neighborhood. of 12 for 27 from the free
- 13:50Speaker 1: throw line yep that would that that is that that
- 13:53Speaker 1: is always what's on the board uh when coach cow
- 13:57Speaker 1: is in the house uh michigan looks incredible yep um
- 14:01Speaker 1: as we record arizona is playing utah state i am
- 14:05Speaker 1: operating under uh the assumption that that's not going to
- 14:08Speaker 1: be particularly compelling.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Yeah that's why we're recording.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that is exactly the point. We're also not bothering
- 14:16Speaker 1: to see if Alabama is going to be able to
- 14:17Speaker 1: win without their second leading score.
- 14:20Speaker 3: We got caught with a couple of pounds of that work.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Turns out NATO is not a big disciplinarian.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Hey, look, man, I can't even blame that on Nate Oates.
- 14:31Speaker 1: He's like, how was I supposed to know?
- 14:34Speaker 3: What is this?
- 14:35Speaker 1: For those of you who don't know, long story, but
- 14:38Speaker 1: Aiden Holloway, the second-leading scorer, got caught with 2.1 pounds
- 14:42Speaker 1: of weed in his house. The task force rolled up
- 14:44Speaker 1: on his house, and they came in there, and apparently
- 14:47Speaker 1: they found the weed and the stuff that was used
- 14:49Speaker 1: to sell the weed. And I had quite a few friends,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and a lot of people tried to make the argument,
- 14:53Speaker 1: and I get it. People shouldn't be getting locked up
- 14:55Speaker 1: for weed no more. And if it was an eighth,
- 14:57Speaker 1: I'd be there with you. If it was outs, I'd
- 14:59Speaker 1: be there with you. Two pounds, I feel like it's
- 15:01Speaker 1: a different discussion. Not even that you're necessarily wrong here.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Two pounds is a lot. Yeah, maybe they shouldn't. I'm
- 15:10Speaker 3: not like, yeah, I hear you. But that is not
- 15:14Speaker 3: the I can't believe people are getting locked up for
- 15:16Speaker 3: weed conversation that we've been having over time.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Yeah, he called some papers in his backpack.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and I have people like, man, a pound, it
- 15:23Speaker 3: doesn't even necessarily mean that he was selling. Then we
- 15:29Speaker 3: found out it was two. At which point, yeah. That's
- 15:36Speaker 3: like the stories you hear about Snoop. Okay?
- 15:38Speaker 1: And maybe the kids are young and dumb and be like,
- 15:41Speaker 1: just because I can't, I'm going to do this.
- 15:43Speaker 3: But you know what? I feel like if he had
- 15:47Speaker 3: enough money.
- 15:47Speaker 1: To get the two pounds, it wouldn't still be two pounds.
- 15:50Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? How many pounds did it.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Start off with? It would have been some progress that
- 15:56Speaker 3: was being made on that. But Yeah, yeah. They got
- 16:00Speaker 3: it with two pounds. Oh, speaking of the white dudes,
- 16:03Speaker 3: quick subject change, but we're just enjoying this tournament. You
- 16:06Speaker 3: watch Illinois play against VCU?
- 16:08Speaker 4: I did not see that game.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Okay, so I watched that game, and I hadn't thought
- 16:13Speaker 1: about this with Illinois. I hadn't thought about this at
- 16:15Speaker 1: all while.
- 16:16Speaker 3: We're staying in some of these spaces that I've chosen
- 16:19Speaker 3: to evaluate the tournament through. They had three dudes with
- 16:23Speaker 3: Slavic names.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Like, one of them is Pedro Stojakovic's son, And they
- 16:28Speaker 1: had a couple others. And I had never thought about this.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And I don't know how many people know this, but
- 16:34Speaker 1: the Eastern Europeans roll deep in Chicago. Like that's kind
- 16:39Speaker 1: of like the thought has been, there have been whispers
- 16:42Speaker 1: around the league for a long time that like if
- 16:44Speaker 1: Jokic ever left Denver, it would be Chicago.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Where he would want to play.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Like, I don't think the Poles count as Slavs, but
- 16:53Speaker 1: like Polish people, for example, I think Warsaw is the
- 16:57Speaker 1: only city in the world with more Polish people than Chicago.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Has, right?
- 16:59Speaker 1: Like, it's that type of spot. But, you know, we've
- 17:02Speaker 1: been watching in the Olympics. We've been watching the NBA
- 17:04Speaker 1: for a long time, man. Them boys from them Slavic
- 17:08Speaker 1: countries be hooping.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 17:09Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? I had never thought about it.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Is it possible that there's like a pickup seed in
- 17:14Speaker 1: Chicago that we just don't know about? You know, like
- 17:18Speaker 1: we know about like the cast that was going to
- 17:20Speaker 1: Illinois back in the day, the Kendall Gills, the Marcus Liberties,
- 17:22Speaker 1: Ben Wilson, rest in peace, all of that stuff. Man,
- 17:25Speaker 1: what if they're over there playing Jokic ball? And Illinois
- 17:28Speaker 1: just been ignoring this for so long. They just been
- 17:30Speaker 1: over there. No look passing, standing still behind, you know,
- 17:34Speaker 1: throwing behind.
- 17:34Speaker 3: The back shit, everything else. And nobody knew, but it
- 17:37Speaker 3: had them cats. Cats was out there playing for Illinois.
- 17:39Speaker 4: What about just seven footers or whatever too?
- 17:41Speaker 3: That's right. Or in cats with a, with handles and
- 17:46Speaker 3: a bunch of chest hair.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Yep.
- 17:48Speaker 1: We've seen that model too. You know, Illinois, for all
- 17:51Speaker 1: we know, they've been sitting on a gold mine. Had a, had,
- 17:55Speaker 1: had no idea. that it was going on. Also, I
- 17:59Speaker 1: mentioned that Duke's going to the next round. They going,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I thought Siena was coming through for us, man.
- 18:07Speaker 3: They was doing it. I felt, I mean, I knew
- 18:11Speaker 3: they wasn't going to win, right?
- 18:13Speaker 4: But- We were getting excited.
- 18:16Speaker 3: I tell you this, they did a better job. They
- 18:19Speaker 3: did a better job. Well, actually, no. Let me be careful.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Actually, no.
- 18:23Speaker 8: Okay.
- 18:26Speaker 3: So I sent a tweet for the Duke game.
- 18:32Speaker 1: That said, today we are all amphibians. And I said
- 18:37Speaker 1: that because Duke was playing against TCU.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Okay? Now, earlier in the day, I had texted Joel
- 18:47Speaker 3: to say.
- 18:48Speaker 1: That, you know, we was all going to be homies.
- 18:52Speaker 1: For those of you who don't know, Joel is a
- 18:54Speaker 1: TCU alum. And so I hit him up, and we.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Got a little back and forth about it.
- 18:59Speaker 1: He said he was worried they weren't going to be
- 19:00Speaker 1: able to score enough points or whatever, but, you know,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I felt like we was on the same team, right?
- 19:04Speaker 1: So then I sent my tweet that said, today we
- 19:07Speaker 1: are all amphibians. Here he go, retweeting that, talking about, no,
- 19:15Speaker 1: we don't want you and we don't need you.
- 19:19Speaker 4: What?
- 19:23Speaker 3: Like, that's Duke over there. That's Duke over there. And
- 19:27Speaker 3: you're like, nah, we good. When in reality, y'all was ass.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Y'all lost by 23 points.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Which is to say, y'all, Sienna, Sienna did more for
- 19:44Speaker 1: the cause than TCU did. Joe's so dedicated to hating
- 19:51Speaker 1: so dedicated to hating that we couldn't even join forces
- 19:55Speaker 1: against Duke for the common good you know what I'm
- 19:58Speaker 1: saying and then hey man maybe it's a whole ring
- 20:01Speaker 1: of tailgate thing man I have a guy Van Lathan
- 20:04Speaker 1: should I wait to ask Van should I wait to
- 20:07Speaker 1: talk to Van about that weird Scottie Pippen commercial that
- 20:11Speaker 1: he did the voiceover for.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Scottie Pippen's a good topic for, you know, whenever he
- 20:15Speaker 4: comes on the show.
- 20:16Speaker 1: He makes a good point that it's good advertising because
- 20:19Speaker 1: it has us talking about Mr.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Pippen.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Anyway, if you haven't seen the commercial, Google it. Scottie Pippen, Mr.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Pippen.
- 20:28Speaker 3: You will find it to be weird. And maybe it
- 20:32Speaker 3: just always feels like Scottie's hatin' to tie that together.
- 20:37Speaker 3: See what I'm saying? Talking about haters. I was trying
- 20:39Speaker 3: to root for his... Hey, man.
- 20:49Speaker 1: North Carolina blew a 19-point lead on Thursday night to VCU.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Now, I have only paid so much attention to North
- 21:01Speaker 1: Carolina basketball this season. But what was a bad sign
- 21:08Speaker 1: for Hubert Davis is that sentence also applies to some
- 21:12Speaker 1: of my friends who are the biggest Carolina fans I know.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Yeah, not a great sign.
- 21:16Speaker 3: They checked out. They had checked out.
- 21:23Speaker 1: There are a lot of criticisms to be made of
- 21:25Speaker 1: Hubert's tenure there. Like, criticisms that I can tell you about, again,
- 21:30Speaker 1: having only watched but so many of their games, right?
- 21:35Speaker 4: Um.
- 21:36Speaker 1: You can just look at the record and see a
- 21:38Speaker 1: certain level of criticism that is fair. The apathy of
- 21:42Speaker 1: the fan base in some cases is apathy. Some places
- 21:45Speaker 1: is outright hostility about where the program is. I did
- 21:50Speaker 1: not think, though, that that loss in that game was
- 21:55Speaker 1: a fireable offense.
- 21:57Speaker 6: It was.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Is a reinforcement if Hubert gets fired. Because I don't
- 22:01Speaker 3: know if you saw this, Ryan, but on Sunday night,
- 22:04Speaker 3: Jones Angel, the voice of Carolina sports, or Carolina basketball,
- 22:07Speaker 3: I don't know, anyway, he sent a tweet out that
- 22:11Speaker 3: said that they had postponed the final episode of the
- 22:14Speaker 3: season of the Hubert Davis show. What are we waiting on, man?
- 22:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Like maybe, maybe he will be fired by the time
- 22:21Speaker 1: people hear this podcast on Monday. But if this is
- 22:23Speaker 1: what is going to be fired him, I know that
- 22:25Speaker 1: if they fire him before April 1st, they got to
- 22:27Speaker 1: pay him like three and a half million dollars or
- 22:29Speaker 1: something like that. But at some point you got to
- 22:31Speaker 1: try to hire somebody else.
- 22:33Speaker 3: And it's an amateur operation that drags this out in
- 22:36Speaker 3: such a manner.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Like it's, it's over.
- 22:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 3: It's over.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Go, go ahead and let him go. I think that
- 22:42Speaker 1: fans generally believe that they're going to let him go. Um,
- 22:46Speaker 1: My thought on Hubert is it doesn't matter if Hubert
- 22:49Speaker 1: lost every game he coached four years in a row.
- 22:52Speaker 3: His legacy is solid.
- 22:53Speaker 1: He has the two greatest wins in the history of
- 22:55Speaker 1: that program, and no one can ever take those things
- 22:59Speaker 1: away from him. I also think that it was very
- 23:02Speaker 1: clear early the job that Hubert got was not the
- 23:06Speaker 1: job that Hubert was preparing for, and it was not
- 23:08Speaker 1: the job that Hubert wanted. The big one was he
- 23:12Speaker 1: was highly resistant to the idea of getting a general
- 23:15Speaker 1: manager to run that basketball program because that is a
- 23:17Speaker 1: notion of professional sports.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Hubert, I firmly believe.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Believe that he took this job as a man of
- 23:24Speaker 1: Christ to guide and mold young men and as a
- 23:29Speaker 1: man who loves that institution to put together a team
- 23:32Speaker 1: of guys who also love that institution and go out
- 23:34Speaker 1: to represent That institution. And, buddy, that is not college
- 23:39Speaker 1: basketball anymore. Whether you think that's good or bad is
- 23:42Speaker 1: its own discussion. I'm just telling you.
- 23:44Speaker 4: It's not what it is.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not what the game is, right? But if
- 23:51Speaker 3: Kendall Wilson is not hurt, is Hubert Davis fired?
- 23:55Speaker 4: Probably not.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Or are we having this discussion? Because he hasn't.
- 23:59Speaker 1: It feels like he's so fired that I'm talking about
- 24:01Speaker 1: him like he's been fired, even though he hasn't actually
- 24:04Speaker 1: been fired yet, because you have to fire him now.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Once you waited this long and nobody said anything, you
- 24:11Speaker 1: got to fire him. If you had come out immediately
- 24:13Speaker 1: and been like, hey, say what you want, but he's
- 24:15Speaker 1: coming back next year.
- 24:16Speaker 9: Right.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Got a big time recruit coming in. He's coming back.
- 24:19Speaker 3: And that's that. That's not what they're doing. That's not
- 24:22Speaker 3: what they said.
- 24:23Speaker 4: No, they're clearly surveying the waters behind the scenes for
- 24:25Speaker 4: his replacement.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:27Speaker 1: But if you have to do that, then you need
- 24:31Speaker 1: to go about this. Because I don't know who you hire.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I don't know who the right guys you hire. I
- 24:35Speaker 1: don't know who you hire that satisfies people. This is
- 24:37Speaker 1: the thing that happened with Kentucky with Cal. They were
- 24:40Speaker 1: happy that Cal went, but they did not do that.
- 24:42Speaker 1: They did not let Cal go because they thought they
- 24:44Speaker 1: were going to hire Mark Pope.
- 24:46Speaker 10: Correct.
- 24:47Speaker 3: They just didn't, right?
- 24:48Speaker 1: Whether he needed to go or not, they did not
- 24:51Speaker 1: do that thinking they were going to get it. And
- 24:52Speaker 1: by the way, Mark Pope is at home and John
- 24:54Speaker 1: Calipari is in the Sweet 16.
- 24:56Speaker 3: For whatever that's worth, right?
- 24:59Speaker 1: There are a lot of complicated factors at play, but
- 25:02Speaker 1: that reality is undeniable.
- 25:05Speaker 3: When schools have their.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Jobs to come open, especially these schools that think very
- 25:10Speaker 1: highly of their jobs, and this is to me, in
- 25:14Speaker 1: the previous era, the best job that there was.
- 25:16Speaker 9: Right.
- 25:17Speaker 1: All things held equal, Carolina's probably getting the player. And
- 25:20Speaker 1: I think that's the metric as to whether or not
- 25:22Speaker 1: you have the best job.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Right?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Okay.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Especially in basketball.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Yes.
- 25:26Speaker 6: Yes.
- 25:26Speaker 3: All things held equal, that was the program.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Okay.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I don't know how that stuff works anymore.
- 25:35Speaker 1: The programs that we consider to be legit, I consider
- 25:38Speaker 1: to be legitimate blue bloods in college basketball, there are
- 25:41Speaker 1: six of them. Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, UCLA, Kansas, and Indiana's
- 25:48Speaker 1: kind of been voted off the island, I guess, but
- 25:50Speaker 1: they're the, I mean, a blue blood is a blue blood,
- 25:53Speaker 1: even if times are a little hard, right?
- 25:55Speaker 4: We were talking about this before the show. What do
- 25:58Speaker 4: we do with UConn now?
- 25:59Speaker 3: They're just nouveau riche.
- 26:00Speaker 1: They are in a conversation that I cannot explain, right?
- 26:04Speaker 1: They have won six national championships since 1999, right?
- 26:07Speaker 3: So it's a little newish, right?
- 26:09Speaker 1: But my point about these jobs is anytime one of
- 26:13Speaker 1: these jobs comes open, they believe that they can get
- 26:16Speaker 1: any coach in the world to take that job.
- 26:18Speaker 3: That's not really how it works.
- 26:20Speaker 1: People typically do not give up good to very good jobs,
- 26:27Speaker 1: even for excellent jobs. Unless there's an alumni factor at play.
- 26:34Speaker 1: That's how Roy Williams leaves Kansas and goes to North Carolina.
- 26:37Speaker 1: But he didn't do it the first time they offered
- 26:40Speaker 1: it to him.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:43Speaker 1: This happens like when Texas head coaching job comes open
- 26:45Speaker 1: in football and stuff like that.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Which coach is it that you're going to get?
- 26:50Speaker 1: You're you're not unless there's a super hot shot coach
- 26:54Speaker 1: that's on the rise. You are typically not going to
- 26:57Speaker 1: get a coach that you feel like is up to
- 26:59Speaker 1: the standard of having your job.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Because that's just how it works.
- 27:02Speaker 1: If there's not appear to be a name that's out there.
- 27:06Speaker 1: So like Dusty May is not leaving Michigan to go
- 27:09Speaker 1: take the North Carolina job. The Michigan job that he's
- 27:11Speaker 1: built up is too good to go to this job.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And by the way, people have questions about whether there's
- 27:17Speaker 1: the proper institutional commitment to.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Winning, right? Whether or not the problem actually is Hubert.
- 27:26Speaker 3: He is a problem. The problem?
- 27:29Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I think Hubert leaves and you find out that you
- 27:32Speaker 1: have a whole lot of other things that you need
- 27:33Speaker 1: to get straight. And there's a level of alignment amongst
- 27:36Speaker 1: the money that you're going to need to get figured out.
- 27:39Speaker 1: We saw what happened with their football search. There was
- 27:42Speaker 1: no alignment in play there. They can't even align to
- 27:45Speaker 1: fire this dude now. Like, would you go take this job?
- 27:50Speaker 1: Forget about whether it's respectful or not to Hubert. They
- 27:53Speaker 1: clearly want to fire him and can't figure out how
- 27:55Speaker 1: to do it. That is not a great commercial for
- 27:59Speaker 1: the job. that you're going to go out there with.
- 28:02Speaker 1: But again, now it's too late. I don't think for
- 28:06Speaker 1: a job like that, you let go of the coach
- 28:09Speaker 1: you got unless you know you got a dude that
- 28:12Speaker 1: can come in and take it.
- 28:14Speaker 4: I mean, you talk about having the money right. Dusty
- 28:16Speaker 4: Mays got one of the richest men in the world
- 28:19Speaker 4: as his booster.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Yes.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Like, you know, he's going to leave and go to
- 28:23Speaker 4: Carolina for what?
- 28:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:25Speaker 3: That's, this is, it's not what it used to be.
- 28:30Speaker 1: But there's a lesson to be learned from the Huber
- 28:36Speaker 1: Davis story. And I mentioned it a little earlier. There's
- 28:42Speaker 1: an old saying they got. You only really do two
- 28:45Speaker 1: days on your job. The disastrous press conference on your
- 28:53Speaker 1: way in and the disastrous press conference on your way out.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Because it ended for Hubert with that press conference that
- 29:03Speaker 1: he had after that game. But for a lot of people,
- 29:06Speaker 1: it ended at that press conference that he had when
- 29:09Speaker 1: he first got the job.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Ryan, we were not working together at the time.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I don't know if you were around people who cared
- 29:15Speaker 1: that much about this part of the press conference. But
- 29:18Speaker 1: Hubert was the first black head coach at the University
- 29:21Speaker 1: of North Carolina. Black head coach at Dean Smith's program.
- 29:24Speaker 1: It's a very, very, very big deal. He was asked
- 29:27Speaker 1: a question about the significance. of this moment and he
- 29:31Speaker 1: just completely fumbled it. He couldn't have fumbled it any worse.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And he said something about, I think he said he
- 29:39Speaker 1: was proud to be black but then he said and.
- 29:43Speaker 3: I'm also proud that my wife is white.
- 29:48Speaker 4: And I.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Feel like I know what he was going for but
- 29:54Speaker 1: he has not lived that down with a significant portion
- 29:59Speaker 1: of the populace And I'm just talking about the black people, okay? Ryan,
- 30:06Speaker 1: you know this better than me. And I think it's
- 30:08Speaker 1: okay to co-sign me on this, all right? Black people
- 30:12Speaker 1: don't really like hearing you talk about your white woman.
- 30:15Speaker 3: But we ain't never really, like, killed nobody over it.
- 30:20Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Like, white guys really ain't
- 30:25Speaker 3: trying to hear you talk about that white woman. Like, no, no, no.
- 30:30Speaker 3: They're not like, oh, you're just like us. No, no.
- 30:34Speaker 3: I don't care how nice you are, Hubert.
- 30:36Speaker 1: If black people had that much of a problem with it,
- 30:39Speaker 1: I don't know how many white people had a problem
- 30:40Speaker 1: with it.
- 30:41Speaker 3: But I guarantee you they are out there. Then he
- 30:45Speaker 3: gets to the last press conference where they're like, Hubert,
- 30:47Speaker 3: why did you not make any, why did you only
- 30:49Speaker 3: play six guys in the second half? Because that was
- 30:52Speaker 3: my choice.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Brother, this was, you can't, you only did those, he
- 30:59Speaker 1: did those two days. He did those two press conferences.
- 31:04Speaker 1: But in between, he zipped Coach K up twice on
- 31:11Speaker 1: behalf of everybody Thank you for your service. Ever wanted

- 34:53Speaker 5: news and information of the day, No need for the
- 34:56Speaker 5: social media feeds.
- 34:57Speaker 4: We got you. Now, if you haven't heard. All right, Bo,
- 35:02Speaker 4: if you haven't heard a couple other stories from the weekend,
- 35:05Speaker 4: NFL stars tried to play flag football, and they got
- 35:08Speaker 4: smoked by the USA team. Some of the people who
- 35:12Speaker 4: were out there, Tom Brady, Jaden Daniels, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts,
- 35:17Speaker 4: and they lost multiple times to Team USA. Bo, what
- 35:21Speaker 4: was your reaction to the story?
- 35:23Speaker 3: Okay, so this game, correct me if I'm wrong, was
- 35:26Speaker 3: supposed to be in Saudi Arabia.
- 35:27Speaker 8: Correct.
- 35:29Speaker 3: But, you know.
- 35:33Speaker 1: So they had to bring it back over here. Are
- 35:36Speaker 1: they still getting paid Saudi Arabia prices?
- 35:39Speaker 4: No, I don't think they got that.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Like, was there a clause that's in there, by the way? Like,
- 35:45Speaker 3: did this stop being sports washing? Because they brought it
- 35:48Speaker 3: back over here to the United States. So the thing
- 35:50Speaker 3: that's interesting about this is this is not a game
- 35:53Speaker 3: that NFL players play.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:55Speaker 5: Right.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Like this is flag football is a much different game
- 35:59Speaker 1: because you can't hit the people.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Okay. Okay.
- 36:05Speaker 1: I can only imagine how motivated those flag football.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Guys were to beat the guys.
- 36:12Speaker 2: In the league.
- 36:13Speaker 1: If for no other reason than they cared this much
- 36:15Speaker 1: about flag football in the first place. Right.
- 36:18Speaker 3: This is their job. They basically do that shit for free.
- 36:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 36:22Speaker 1: None of these boys would be playing that football for free.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Not a single one of them would be doing that.
- 36:28Speaker 1: But correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Logan Paul... Tackle
- 36:35Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Hey, man.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Everything.
- 36:44Speaker 1: If I was an Eagles fan, I'd be, we got
- 36:47Speaker 1: to get a new quarterback.
- 36:51Speaker 3: That's the guy to hit.
- 36:54Speaker 1: What happens if you're just not thinking and stiff.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Arm somebody in a flat football game?
- 37:01Speaker 1: I think you'd get away with stiff-arming Logan Paul.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Certainly Jalen Hurts, who is well-liked, but who could get
- 37:08Speaker 4: away with stiff-arming Logan Paul?
- 37:11Speaker 1: Like, Ryan, I don't know if you remember this because
- 37:12Speaker 1: you would have been a bit young for this, but
- 37:14Speaker 1: the best part of the story about when, I mean,
- 37:20Speaker 1: it's about that time that Lachelle Sprewell choked P.J. Carlissimo
- 37:23Speaker 1: in practice. But anyway, P.J., they was all down on P.J.
- 37:28Speaker 1: And so, It's not simply that Spree started choking about
- 37:32Speaker 1: and that nobody like really broke it up.
- 37:34Speaker 3: It's that there was cast that was over there shooting
- 37:36Speaker 3: free throws on the side goal. Look over.
- 37:38Speaker 4: No one broke it up.
- 37:39Speaker 3: They kept shooting free throws. Forget about not breaking it up.
- 37:42Speaker 3: They didn't stop what they were doing. They just kept
- 37:45Speaker 3: on doing. I feel like that's what would happen if
- 37:48Speaker 3: you sniff off Logan Paul.
- 37:49Speaker 4: Yeah. Everyone turns around. Yeah.
- 37:52Speaker 3: Everybody's just like, I ain't seen no foul.
- 37:55Speaker 1: It's kind of how when Robert Parrish beat up Bill
- 37:58Speaker 1: Lambert in the playoffs.
- 38:00Speaker 3: And then he kicked him out the gate. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- 38:05Speaker 3: you know, it be like that sometimes.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Are you ready for 48 hours if Tom Brady could
- 38:09Speaker 4: still play in the NFL?
- 38:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's that time of year, man.
- 38:13Speaker 9: Right?
- 38:13Speaker 1: Like, there's only been so many topics that you can
- 38:15Speaker 1: put on television for the tournament that'll, like, really catch on,
- 38:18Speaker 1: but we would talk about this.
- 38:19Speaker 3: That's a good D-block topic.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Right at the end of the show, going right into
- 38:24Speaker 1: the rapid to the other show.
- 38:25Speaker 3: I don't know, guys. Does Tom Brady still have it?
- 38:28Speaker 3: Because Tom Brady... Does Tom Brady still think he has it?
- 38:32Speaker 4: Yes. Clearly.
- 38:34Speaker 6: Yes.
- 38:34Speaker 4: Yes. Absolutely. Tom Brady absolutely thought he was the best
- 38:39Speaker 4: NFL quarterback that was there.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you think Tom Brady... No, I don't want to
- 38:44Speaker 1: say that.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you do.
- 38:49Speaker 1: He just had to make sure he could get some custody, right? Like,
- 38:55Speaker 1: if not for that, is he still playing football? I mean,
- 38:58Speaker 1: that man.
- 39:00Speaker 3: We don't know if he gave up his family to
- 39:02Speaker 3: keep playing football, but the signs were there.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:05Speaker 4: Right. Yeah, I mean, it clearly was not going well for,
- 39:09Speaker 4: and he clearly, he clearly thinks in the right situation
- 39:13Speaker 4: he could win another Super Bowl at 48 years old.
- 39:15Speaker 6: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 39:16Speaker 1: He might have to give a little bit of money
- 39:17Speaker 1: back to, you know, help them balance the cap or whatever,
- 39:19Speaker 1: but yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, don't let the Raiders
- 39:22Speaker 1: get good. He'll be showing up like Jordan used to
- 39:26Speaker 1: show up to play pickup.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Hey, young buddy, this is how it's done.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Give me that, give me that,
- 39:34Speaker 3: give me that. Go to the back and get my jersey.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:38Speaker 3: It'll be a red 12.
- 39:40Speaker 4: All right. Speaking of the NFL, the NFL draft is
- 39:43Speaker 4: in Pittsburgh this year, and the Pittsburgh public schools will
- 39:46Speaker 4: have to operate remotely from April 22nd to April 24th.
- 39:50Speaker 4: The city is hosting the NFL draft with road closures,
- 39:53Speaker 4: heightened security, parking restrictions, and heavy traffic expected. The city
- 39:57Speaker 4: believes remote learning is the best option during that time.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Look, man, I've been told that Pittsburgh is a city
- 40:06Speaker 1: that has its charms.
- 40:09Speaker 4: Okay?
- 40:10Speaker 1: It's a city that is big enough to support three
- 40:14Speaker 1: Major League Sports franchises.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Ryan, I don't remember if.
- 40:19Speaker 1: It was last year or the year before. I don't
- 40:22Speaker 1: remember exactly what year it was. But they had the
- 40:27Speaker 1: draft one year in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 40:30Speaker 4: I think that was two years ago.
- 40:32Speaker 3: It was two years ago.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:33Speaker 1: I don't recall hearing anything about Green Bay shutting down schools.
- 40:41Speaker 3: For the draft. In fact, I'm asking the brain right now. Correction.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Did they have to shut down the schools?
- 40:52Speaker 3: Green Bay did close the schools. All I'm asking you, Pittsburgh.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Do you want to be in the same sentence as
- 41:00Speaker 4: Green Bay?
- 41:00Speaker 3: Are you Green Bay? Are you Green Bay? That's what
- 41:05Speaker 3: I'm asking.
- 41:06Speaker 1: It reminds me, in 2010, before the Super Bowl, you'll
- 41:11Speaker 1: love this, my South Louisiana friend. Somebody had a case
- 41:17Speaker 1: before court like I want to say the week of
- 41:19Speaker 1: the Super Bowl and whatever court in New Orleans. And
- 41:24Speaker 1: he filed whatever kind of paperwork you put in to
- 41:27Speaker 1: try to get a delay on the trial. And the
- 41:30Speaker 1: argument put forth in the paperwork was that the area
- 41:33Speaker 1: was soon to be taken over, and I quote, by
- 41:37Speaker 1: Saints mania.
- 41:38Speaker 3: And that once.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Saints mania got a hold of the city, wasn't nobody
- 41:42Speaker 1: going to be getting no work done. So we should
- 41:44Speaker 1: push the trial until later so we can deal with
- 41:47Speaker 1: this Saints mania. and of course in lazy anna it
- 41:52Speaker 1: worked it worked yeah it worked like a charm you
- 41:55Speaker 1: didn't even i felt like the judge is like you
- 41:57Speaker 1: ain't even have to go through all this why did
- 41:58Speaker 1: you just ask.
- 41:59Speaker 4: Me why you didn't even have to file the motion right.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Right right like you like you like you really took
- 42:03Speaker 3: time to type that shit out and everything huh brother
- 42:05Speaker 3: i was just waiting for you to say the word.
- 42:09Speaker 4: All right uh Moving over to music. Uh, Jay-Z will
- 42:12Speaker 4: be performing two concerts in Yankee stadiums in July to
- 42:16Speaker 4: celebrate one, the 30th anniversary of reasonable doubt and 25th
- 42:20Speaker 4: anniversary of blueprint. Uh, like I said, uh, Friday, Saturday
- 42:24Speaker 4: in July at Yankee stadium. Bo, what was your, were
- 42:28Speaker 4: you surprised by this?
- 42:30Speaker 1: No, I was not surprised. Um, and there are parts
- 42:34Speaker 1: of me that would really love to go to the
- 42:36Speaker 1: reasonable doubt show. Um, Blueprint if you gave me tickets, right? Ryan,
- 42:43Speaker 1: have you looked and seen what it appears it's going.
- 42:46Speaker 3: To take to be able to go to these concerts?
- 42:51Speaker 4: I can only imagine. Because, I mean, Yankee Stadium is big,
- 42:54Speaker 4: but it's not like these 80,000 seat arenas.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Yeah, the problem is these shows are a very rare quantity.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Right.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Like, truthfully.
- 43:05Speaker 1: This is the kind of thing that like Paul Simon
- 43:09Speaker 1: would do it in Central Park.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Yes.
- 43:11Speaker 3: You know, and you get like a quarter million people
- 43:14Speaker 3: who pull up.
- 43:15Speaker 4: To do that. There's certainly that kind of demand here.
- 43:18Speaker 1: That's what it appears to be, which is fascinating for
- 43:22Speaker 1: a mediocre live performer.
- 43:24Speaker 3: Like, it's just not his bag. He's not terrible.
- 43:26Speaker 6: Right.
- 43:26Speaker 4: Right?
- 43:27Speaker 1: But the idea of the show excites me because the
- 43:33Speaker 1: bond at a Jay-Z show is the bond of the
- 43:36Speaker 1: songs and the way that people feel about the songs. Like,
- 43:39Speaker 1: it basically will turn into... You'll do the performing for him,
- 43:43Speaker 1: more or less. But I'm not paying that kind of
- 43:46Speaker 1: money for a dude that's not excellent at this.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 43:51Speaker 3: You looking at them numbers?
- 43:52Speaker 4: Yes.
- 43:53Speaker 3: They're crazy.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:54Speaker 3: They're crazy.
- 43:55Speaker 4: Crazy for New York.
- 43:56Speaker 1: And it's going to be insanely hot. It is a
- 43:59Speaker 1: baseball stadium. I don't know how concerts go there, but like,
- 44:04Speaker 1: Jay-Z is a stadium act. That's asking for a lot, right?
- 44:10Speaker 1: And by the way, some people are going to remember
- 44:11Speaker 1: me saying something, and I want to be very clear
- 44:13Speaker 1: about what I said before. I made the point once
- 44:17Speaker 1: that Jay-Z could not sell out stadiums. Like, he could
- 44:19Speaker 1: not do a stadium tour. He could not do a
- 44:21Speaker 1: stadium tour.
- 44:22Speaker 4: No.
- 44:22Speaker 1: But you say two nights only? Doing a stadium with
- 44:26Speaker 1: very special shows?
- 44:28Speaker 3: Oh, he could do that.
- 44:29Speaker 4: In New York? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:30Speaker 3: He might be able to do these, like, three of these.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Right?
- 44:33Speaker 1: Like, he could give you that. And people who go
- 44:38Speaker 1: are going to have a great time. I'm not spending
- 44:41Speaker 1: that money, though.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Not me.
- 44:44Speaker 4: All right, speaking of music, vinyl sales crossed a billion
- 44:48Speaker 4: dollars in U.S. revenue this past year. First time it's
- 44:51Speaker 4: hit this milestone since 1983. Bo, are you surprised by this?
- 44:55Speaker 3: I am actually, yes. I am a little surprised by it.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Like, I'd love to see a little bit more demographic
- 45:00Speaker 1: information now about who the vinyl people are becoming.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Because I do think, for me at least.
- 45:06Speaker 1: There's something to be said for a number of reasons
- 45:09Speaker 1: for having a physical copy. One, for me, it's kind
- 45:13Speaker 1: of my footprint in the world. Otherwise, all my stuff
- 45:15Speaker 1: is in machines. I don't have files printed out in
- 45:19Speaker 1: paper and stuff like that. I got stuff on hard drives.
- 45:25Speaker 1: That's what life has become for a lot of people.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I think that there is a certain charm to physical copy,
- 45:31Speaker 1: and also it is truly a better listening experience.
- 45:36Speaker 3: What I also think is happening is it sounds like
- 45:41Speaker 3: this is older people going back and buying.
- 45:44Speaker 1: All the stuff of their time. I'd also like to
- 45:47Speaker 1: know if that number includes resale. If it's just new vinyl,
- 45:51Speaker 1: then that's a really interesting number. But I do find
- 45:55Speaker 1: that what I do, and I recognize that there's a
- 45:58Speaker 1: measure of privilege in this, But most things I'll still stream.
- 46:04Speaker 3: But the people I really care about, I reward by
- 46:07Speaker 3: buying a physical copy of like the surgery just came out.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Just bought one of those weird record. That's a whole
- 46:17Speaker 3: nother episode for another day. But yeah, I'll buy every
- 46:20Speaker 3: record he puts out. He's earned it. He deserves my money.
- 46:24Speaker 4: All right, Bo. A couple of voicemails, always some good ones.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Here's the first.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Hey, what's up, Bo?
- 46:34Speaker 10: This is Jordan calling from Georgia. And I'm going to
- 46:36Speaker 10: tell you about the time that my family found out
- 46:38Speaker 10: my brother is a black Duke fan. So it was
- 46:41Speaker 10: back in 92 when Duke was playing Michigan at that championship.
- 46:45Speaker 10: And we all watching the game. And they say, you know,
- 46:47Speaker 10: my brother, he's about 10 at the time, he's like, yeah,
- 46:49Speaker 10: go Duke. And so he says, go Duke. And my uncle,
- 46:52Speaker 10: my dad's brother, looked at him and said, did you
- 46:54Speaker 10: say go Duke? He's like, yeah, go Duke. And my
- 46:56Speaker 10: dad's got this menacing.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Look on his face.
- 46:58Speaker 10: And my dad's like, why do you like Duke? My
- 47:01Speaker 10: brother's like, well, Grant Hill is cold. And my uncle's like, yeah,
- 47:05Speaker 10: Grant Hill is cold.
- 47:06Speaker 8: He is cold.
- 47:07Speaker 10: And then my uncle looks at my brother. He says,
- 47:08Speaker 10: how do you feel about Christian Layton? And my brother's like,
- 47:12Speaker 10: I don't like him. He kicked that man in the chest.
- 47:14Speaker 10: He was talking about when Christian Layton put Timberlake in
- 47:18Speaker 10: the chest and they played against Kentucky. But, yeah, Duke
- 47:21Speaker 10: won the game. Let's just say the house wasn't happy.
- 47:24Speaker 10: But I remember at the end of the game, My
- 47:25Speaker 10: dad was talking to my brother, and my dad said,
- 47:28Speaker 10: look here, you tell anybody else you're a Duke fan,
- 47:31Speaker 10: you'll be living with Rambo. Now, you won't know who
- 47:34Speaker 10: Rambo is. Rambo's our Siberian Husky who lives in our backyard. So,
- 47:38Speaker 10: my brother never told people he was a Duke fan.
- 47:41Speaker 10: He just said, you know, he like Gray Hill. So,
- 47:43Speaker 10: that's how we got the Black Duke fan in our family.
- 47:45Speaker 10: Appreciate it, bro.
- 47:51Speaker 9: He treated that like one of them guests who was
- 47:52Speaker 9: coming to dinner situations that we talked about before. There
- 47:56Speaker 9: was once a Saturday Night Live sketch where they did
- 48:00Speaker 9: the time life videos or whatever.
- 48:02Speaker 1: It was arguments for Christmas in case you couldn't come home.
- 48:07Speaker 1: And one of them was, how dare you bring that
- 48:10Speaker 1: black man in my house? I don't give a good
- 48:12Speaker 1: goddamn if he can't hear me. That's basically what just
- 48:16Speaker 1: happened with him right there.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Like, yo, you just told these people that you do what?
- 48:20Speaker 3: He said, you be sleeping with Rambo.
- 48:23Speaker 1: He's like, I can't stop you from doing it.
- 48:26Speaker 4: But I can stop you from.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Telling people he would have been better off bringing a
- 48:31Speaker 3: man home.
- 48:33Speaker 4: All right. Here's our next one. Hey, bro.
- 48:36Speaker 8: He from the DMV. So since I heard you talk
- 48:39Speaker 8: about Immaculate Grid a few months back, I've been completely
- 48:43Speaker 8: hooked on it. I've got my own strategies and formulas.
- 48:47Speaker 8: I try to do two a day. I was curious, though,
- 48:51Speaker 8: with your amazing memory, what are some ways that you
- 48:55Speaker 8: like to challenge yourself when filling out the grids?
- 48:58Speaker 4: Thanks, man. Bye.
- 49:02Speaker 1: All right, so generally speaking on Immaculate Grid, I'm really
- 49:05Speaker 1: just trying to get it done depending on the sport.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Like baseball, Ryan, all them new teams, like the Rays
- 49:10Speaker 1: and the Diamondbacks.
- 49:12Speaker 4: Yeah, those are tough.
- 49:13Speaker 3: I got nothing. Like the newer they are.
- 49:16Speaker 4: Basically, if they didn't exist in the 80s, you're... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:20Speaker 3: It's a little tough for me, right?
- 49:22Speaker 1: The Marlins and Rockies I can do okay with, right?
- 49:25Speaker 1: But I don't know. It's the after that that's a
- 49:28Speaker 1: little janky for me. With basketball, I often try to
- 49:33Speaker 1: fill all the squares with Caucasians. And with football, I
- 49:38Speaker 1: often try with black quarterbacks, if it is at all possible.
- 49:42Speaker 1: That is, that's what I'll, that's what I'll try to
- 49:45Speaker 1: do to make it.
- 49:47Speaker 4: Is that to win the game or for your own
- 49:48Speaker 4: personal enjoyment?
- 49:49Speaker 3: That's for my own personal enjoyment sometimes.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Because sometimes they make it where it's easy. Sometimes though, man,
- 49:54Speaker 1: I get out there, like with the NBA in particular,
- 49:57Speaker 1: Mackley Grid, and so the Houston Texans are a tricky
- 50:00Speaker 1: one for me. Because there's a whole, however many years
- 50:05Speaker 1: that I don't have them, you know, in the rotation.
- 50:08Speaker 1: like I do with some other schools, other teams. But
- 50:12Speaker 1: it really lets me know what NBA teams I'm going
- 50:14Speaker 1: to be watching. I'm talking about you, the Orlando Magic.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I'm talking about you, the Sacramento Kings.
- 50:22Speaker 3: And I am talking about you, the Utah Jazz. Man,
- 50:27Speaker 3: I'd be having trouble. If it ain't Rudy Gay, luckily
- 50:30Speaker 3: Rudy Gay played for everybody. If it ain't Rudy Gay, man,
- 50:33Speaker 3: I'd be hard up when the Jazz come up.
- 50:35Speaker 4: Yeah, anything after Stockton Malone. It's a tough go.
- 50:38Speaker 3: It's a tough go.
- 50:40Speaker 4: All right, here's our next one.
- 50:42Speaker 10: Hey, Bomani.
- 50:43Speaker 6: Hey, Sean.
- 50:44Speaker 10: Big fan.
- 50:46Speaker 6: Listening to you and Vinny talk last week about Big
- 50:49Speaker 6: Slim coming reminded me of a clip of Jay-Z, an
- 50:52Speaker 6: interview he gave one time where he said, like, he
- 50:55Speaker 6: got in the studio and Memphis Bleak was there and
- 50:58Speaker 6: Beating Seagull was there and, you know, whatever artist they
- 51:01Speaker 6: had at the time. And he was like, hey. We
- 51:03Speaker 6: got a small gap, and we need to flood the
- 51:05Speaker 6: market right now because 50 Cent is coming. And then
- 51:09Speaker 6: at the end of the interview, it was like four
- 51:10Speaker 6: months later, the tidal wave came, and we couldn't get
- 51:13Speaker 6: anything out. So I was wondering, like I couldn't think
- 51:17Speaker 6: of a single parallel in sports besides Victor. Like, I mean,
- 51:23Speaker 6: Alabama football sort of had a similar thing, but they
- 51:25Speaker 6: had already arrived before. Like there was no buildup. There
- 51:28Speaker 6: was no storm to build it up. So I was
- 51:30Speaker 6: wondering if you could think of another parallel to like
- 51:33Speaker 6: what we're seeing with Victor right now, because he's coming
- 51:36Speaker 6: and it's going to change everything.
- 51:39Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, I think the obvious answer there is
- 51:42Speaker 3: LeBron James.
- 51:44Speaker 1: The thing with LeBron and where this is going to
- 51:47Speaker 1: get interesting with Victor, it took LeBron eight years.
- 51:53Speaker 3: But he got to the finals for the first time
- 51:55Speaker 3: in year four.
- 51:57Speaker 1: It took Michael Jordan seven years. Outside of Magic and Bird,
- 52:02Speaker 1: and I guess you could say Tim Duncan, because Tim
- 52:04Speaker 1: Duncan got there in year two.
- 52:05Speaker 3: But Tim Duncan got there and had David Robinson.
- 52:08Speaker 4: And a strike-shortened season.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it took Shaq eight years. It
- 52:16Speaker 3: took Kobe, I guess, four.
- 52:19Speaker 1: My point being, Victor's coming, but it might take a
- 52:24Speaker 1: little while. Very few of these guys have won championships
- 52:28Speaker 1: without us getting impatient about it. Shea Gildas Alexander kind
- 52:32Speaker 1: of snuck up and made that happen.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Even Jokic, right?
- 52:35Speaker 1: We held back an MVP from him because he hadn't
- 52:39Speaker 1: won a championship.
- 52:42Speaker 4: Right?
- 52:42Speaker 3: Like, we get a little impatient.
- 52:45Speaker 6: And.
- 52:45Speaker 4: That's as part of the NBA's narrative building as anything.
- 52:48Speaker 3: The Spurs have not won a series yet. At the
- 52:53Speaker 3: same time. Did you see him hit that shot? Yeah.
- 52:55Speaker 3: Was it Friday? Was it Friday night to win the game?
- 52:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:58Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, okay, so....
- 53:03Speaker 1: From the elbow extended, ISO, jumper, this is how we're
- 53:11Speaker 1: closing out games.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 53:17Speaker 3: Maybe he's here.
- 53:18Speaker 4: All right, here's our last one.
- 53:19Speaker 8: It was good, Bo.
- 53:22Speaker 5: This is Will, living in Seattle, but.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Originally from Virginia.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Now.
- 53:31Speaker 5: after 20 years in the military Navy to be exact,
- 53:36Speaker 5: I feel like I was desensitized.
- 53:40Speaker 2: From hearing names that I weren't expecting.
- 53:43Speaker 5: I wasn't expecting, you know, I've met white guys named Alfonso,
- 53:48Speaker 5: white girls named Monique, Asian guys named Xavier. But now
- 53:55Speaker 5: that I'm out in the real world, um, I had
- 54:00Speaker 5: a situation. Now, anytime I hear this name, I only
- 54:05Speaker 5: think of one thing. Unless you know someone, personally, you're
- 54:12Speaker 5: not going to think of anything else. So I'm at
- 54:15Speaker 5: my new job. The male girl walks in, the male lady,
- 54:22Speaker 5: and we start chopping it up. We exchange names. And
- 54:27Speaker 5: there's only one thing.
- 54:29Speaker 2: That passed through my mind as she told me that
- 54:32Speaker 2: her name was Mercedes.
- 54:34Speaker 5: So I'm taking a back because as I look at her,
- 54:41Speaker 5: she has no idea what the no limit soldiers make
- 54:45Speaker 5: people say. You understand what I'm saying? She has no
- 54:50Speaker 5: idea that took the shocker wraps off beat. And I
- 54:55Speaker 5: was just like, wow, Mercedes, really? And she said, I
- 54:59Speaker 5: really like the name. And I just shook my head
- 55:01Speaker 5: and I said, it suits you. And since then, we
- 55:06Speaker 5: got a great friendship. But what I do like to
- 55:09Speaker 5: do is I like to sneak in.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Names of No Limit songs and albums as we're talking
- 55:15Speaker 2: just to see if it clicks for her. It's not
- 55:19Speaker 2: going to click for her, Bo. It's not going to
- 55:21Speaker 2: click for her.
- 55:22Speaker 5: All right, anyway.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Hey, appreciate everything y'all doing.
- 55:26Speaker 5: Love the show.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Long time listener.
- 55:28Speaker 5: Y'all take care.
- 55:31Speaker 3: And Ryan, if you did not know, the title of
- 55:33Speaker 3: that Mercedes album was literally Rear End.
- 55:36Speaker 4: I think you've talked about this before.
- 55:40Speaker 3: Couldn't possibly have been more shameless. Possibly have been more shameless.
- 55:46Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen. Thanks so much for joining us
- 55:48Speaker 1: here on The Right Time. We do this four days
