Because the ship is not just serving passengers. It's also running a city that moves at 22 knots. There's engine telemetry, HVAC systems, food inventory, security cameras, medical equipment, crew communications. It's a distributed antenna system that creates a dense, low-latency network across every deck. The total bandwidth per ship can exceed 3 gigabits per second. Luna: Three gigs per second — that's roughly what a small office building might get. But you're dividing that among six thousand passengers and two thousand crew, so it's not exactly fiber-to-the-home for each cabin. Lucas: But you're missing the key point. The network is segmented. The guest-facing Wi-Fi and the operational network are physically separate, or at least virtually separated via network slicing. The crew can have a dedicated low-latency slice for IoT sensors, while guests get a best-effort slice for video. Some lines, like Royal Caribbean, have partnered with providers like Nokia and AT&T to deploy private 5G networks on board. Others, like MSC Cruises, work with Samsung Networks. But the interesting shift is that many are moving toward a neutral-host model, where a single private 5G network handles both guest traffic and IoT traffic, rather than having two separate systems. The installation cost for a single large ship can run into the millions. And there's also the issue of backhaul. While the ship is at sea, it's relying on satellite links which have limited capacity. So the 5G network can only be as good as the satellite connection — unless you cache content locally. Luna: Which is where edge computing comes in. You could cache Netflix shows, Spotify playlists, even software updates for the ship's systems, right on board. So the 5G network is just the last mile. Lucas: Precisely. Some of the newer ships have onboard edge servers with dozens of terabytes of storage. When a passenger requests the latest Marvel movie, it doesn't go up to a satellite and back. It comes from the server two decks below. That's a game-changer for cost and latency. Luna: I want to zoom out. How many cruise ships worldwide are currently equipped with private 5G networks? Is this still an early adopter thing, or is it becoming standard? Lucas: As of mid-2026, I'd estimate roughly 40 to 50 ships have some form of private 5G, out of a global fleet of about 300 cruise ships. So it's still early. But every new ship being built — and there are about 20 on order — is designed with 5G-ready infrastructure. The retrofit market is slower because of the cost, but some lines are doing phased rollouts. Luna: What about smaller cruise lines, or river cruise operators? Do they see the same benefits? Lucas: It's harder for them to justify the investment because their margins are thinner. But some river cruise operators in Europe are starting to deploy 5G using the 3.5 gigahertz band, often in partnership with local mobile operators. The value proposition is different — it's more about automation of locks and docking systems, which can reduce crew costs. Luna: So what's your prediction? In five years, will a cruise ship without 5G be like a hotel without Wi-Fi? Unthinkable? Lucas: I think that's exactly where we're heading. Because it's not just about connectivity. It's about operational efficiency. A 5G-connected ship can monitor engine vibration in real time, predict maintenance needs, optimize fuel consumption, manage fresh water production, track every food item from the galley to the buffet.
