Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on the Brink.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's Thursday, December eighteenth. Joined this week on the show
- 0:28Speaker 1: by our good friend Ryan Phillips. You know him from
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Assembly Call. He's also writing for Sports Illustrated, which
- 0:37Speaker 1: we talked to him the last time he was on
- 0:39Speaker 1: about just how surreal I guess that is for him
- 0:43Speaker 1: to be able to see his name there as a
- 0:49Speaker 1: writer for that staff. So continued good work there by, Ryan, Ryan,
- 0:53Speaker 1: welcome back to the show. Good to have you back,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Always good to see you.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah. I always a blast. I love this I love
- 0:59Speaker 2: this podcast.
- 0:59Speaker 3: It always nice being a guest on a podcast you
- 1:01Speaker 3: actually listen to, so I can't say I listened back
- 1:05Speaker 3: to the Simply Call. So I you know, it's nice
- 1:07Speaker 3: to be on one where when the episode comes up,
- 1:10Speaker 3: I'll probably skip this one because I don't, like, you know,
- 1:12Speaker 3: want to indulge myself.
- 1:13Speaker 2: But I love being on the show.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So I asked you this before we start recording. But
- 1:19Speaker 1: you have the unfortunate break of having to work on
- 1:24Speaker 1: New Year's Day, so you will not be at the
- 1:25Speaker 1: Rose Bowl. I mean that that's got to hurt a
- 1:28Speaker 1: little bit, right, I mean, Indiana and the Rose Bowl
- 1:30Speaker 1: not far from you, and you don't get to make
- 1:33Speaker 1: the trip. I'm not trying to rub salt in the wounds,
- 1:34Speaker 1: but you're.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Doing a good job. It's a tough brank man. That's
- 1:38Speaker 2: a tough break. It is, and and it is a bummer.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And I think that I'm the first person all my
- 1:43Speaker 3: friends in our friend Guruve breached out to like, well,
- 1:45Speaker 3: I know you're going because it's you know, right up
- 1:48Speaker 3: the road, and so yeah, it is a bummer.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I you know, we.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Set work plans and schedules like two months in advance,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and I shame on me. I did not project Indiana
- 2:00Speaker 3: to the Rose Bowl. I knew they'd be in the playoff.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I knew they would probably, you know, at some point
- 2:04Speaker 3: get a bye. But I don't know why I never
- 2:07Speaker 3: put together they'd be in the Rosewls. Soas yeah, sure
- 2:09Speaker 3: I'll work on New Year's Day.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That's fine. If I get near z eve off, I'll
- 2:11Speaker 2: go on New Yr's Day, you know.
- 2:12Speaker 3: And and then we've got some great college football writers
- 2:15Speaker 3: who are going to be covering it in person. So
- 2:17Speaker 3: I was not up for that assignment, unfortunately. But yeah,
- 2:21Speaker 3: it's a bummer, man. I have know so many friends
- 2:23Speaker 3: who were going to be out there. I know so
- 2:25Speaker 3: many Southern California users who are going. I know so
- 2:27Speaker 3: many people who are flying in. I you know, people
- 2:30Speaker 3: who got on the off chance they were gonna make it,
- 2:32Speaker 3: got an Airbnb a month in advance, which I should
- 2:36Speaker 3: have done that, but I didn't. So yeah, I think
- 2:38Speaker 3: that it really snuck up on me. And then you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: the complete incredible you know, I say, I was in
- 2:47Speaker 3: disbelief when they beat Ohio State. I knew they could
- 2:49Speaker 3: and I knew that, you know, they were capable of it,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and certainly as good a team, and I thought that
- 2:53Speaker 3: for sure they were no worse than the number two
- 2:55Speaker 3: team in the country, but actually going through in that
- 2:58Speaker 3: game of beating Ohio State, I was in a state
- 3:00Speaker 3: of shock.
- 3:01Speaker 2: At the end.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Not again, not because I didn't believe they were capable,
- 3:05Speaker 3: because it actually happened. And my girlfriend was sitting next
- 3:07Speaker 3: to me, and she looked at me and said, you're
- 3:11Speaker 3: not really celebrating what's going on, And I'm like, I
- 3:13Speaker 3: don't know how to celebrate this moment, you know, I
- 3:16Speaker 3: mean it's as a as an Indiana fan for more
- 3:19Speaker 3: than twenty years.
- 3:19Speaker 2: In football.
- 3:21Speaker 3: This isn't something we're used to doing, and so I
- 3:25Speaker 3: think that you know, really happy and proud of what
- 3:27Speaker 3: that team has done, but unfortunately I will not be there.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I'll be cheering for my couch, I promise.
- 3:32Speaker 1: So just before we get into basketball, because that's I
- 3:37Speaker 1: want that to be the focus of our conversation obviously,
- 3:39Speaker 1: but I do want to ask you quickly on football,
- 3:41Speaker 1: because you you know, you're right about college football. Some
- 3:44Speaker 1: for Sports Illustrated, you follow the sport more on a
- 3:47Speaker 1: national level. But I'm curious just for your thoughts on
- 3:51Speaker 1: how sustainable long term this this is in your eyes
- 3:55Speaker 1: for IU football because it kind of Obviously Indian fans
- 3:59Speaker 1: are are thrilled with the last two seasons and not
- 4:03Speaker 1: to look ahead because there's a path here obviously for
- 4:06Speaker 1: Indiana to win three games and win the national championship.
- 4:09Speaker 1: But when you thought you'd be saying that, man, you
- 4:13Speaker 1: see these commitments of you know, paying Bryant Haynes, the
- 4:16Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, what they're going to pay him. You see
- 4:20Speaker 1: Indiana starting to creep up on more lists of recruits,
- 4:23Speaker 1: not just from the high school ranks. Obviously the portal too.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I'm curious just in your mind how sustainable this feels
- 4:31Speaker 1: in the long term, not asking specifically can they go
- 4:37Speaker 1: undefeated and win the Big Ten again, because it's unlikely
- 4:40Speaker 1: that that happens every season. But I think coming into
- 4:43Speaker 1: this year, most of us felt like last year was
- 4:46Speaker 1: a great story and then this year, you know, they
- 4:48Speaker 1: lost some players and there was a lot of uncertainty.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Maybe they win nine games and go to a really
- 4:54Speaker 1: good bowl game, and here they are thirteen to oh
- 4:57Speaker 1: the number one seed in the college football playoffs, So
- 5:00Speaker 1: who knows? I mean, maybe this is what to expect
- 5:02Speaker 1: now with Kirsty Knight, the Helm is a perennial college
- 5:05Speaker 1: football playoff contender, But is that realistic in your mind?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Just curious for your thoughts.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I think that the thing Signetti has done is not
- 5:13Speaker 3: only raise the ceiling of the program, but he's he's
- 5:14Speaker 3: tremendously raised the floor, I think, which is maybe even
- 5:18Speaker 3: more important for Indiana because there's a baseline of success.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I think you can expect every year.
- 5:22Speaker 3: If they're going to do try and do this every
- 5:24Speaker 3: year and be a top five team and get to
- 5:27Speaker 3: the playoff.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And have a chance to win a national championship. The
- 5:29Speaker 2: one thing that has to get better is the high
- 5:31Speaker 2: school recruiting.
- 5:32Speaker 3: If you look at national champions champions of the past decade,
- 5:37Speaker 3: twenty years and look at the teams they played in
- 5:39Speaker 3: the championship game, look at teams they played.
- 5:41Speaker 2: In the semi final.
- 5:42Speaker 3: All those teams wind up in the top fifteen of
- 5:45Speaker 3: recruiting pretty much every year, Top top ten, top fifteen,
- 5:48Speaker 3: and Georgia Alabama, the teams that have won it the most,
- 5:50Speaker 3: are in the top three every year pretty much. Indiana,
- 5:53Speaker 3: I think they finished in the thirties this year with
- 5:55Speaker 3: their high school class, which it's understandable. You start recruiting
- 5:58Speaker 3: these kids when they're freshman, sophomore, you start building those relationships. Today,
- 6:02Speaker 3: he's only been here two years and so he's way
- 6:04Speaker 3: behind these other guys. And I think that even after
- 6:06Speaker 3: last year, still had to prove that he could sustain
- 6:08Speaker 3: that success.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think that's going to get better.
- 6:11Speaker 3: But and I think that the transfer portal for Indiana
- 6:14Speaker 3: will be very successful of here because they'll say, look
- 6:16Speaker 3: at all these transfers we have turned into NFL caliber players,
- 6:20Speaker 3: Look what we've done with them. And so I think
- 6:21Speaker 3: they'll be successful there, particularly at the quarterback spot. I
- 6:24Speaker 3: think they'll get whoever they want as the quarterback pretty
- 6:27Speaker 3: well within reason, pretty much. But I think that for long, long,
- 6:31Speaker 3: long term success, the recruit the high school recruiting has
- 6:33Speaker 3: to get better, because that always has to be the
- 6:35Speaker 3: life blood of your program. I think we've seen that
- 6:38Speaker 3: in college basketball too. You can get recruits that put
- 6:41Speaker 3: you over the top one, two here or whatever. But
- 6:44Speaker 3: these teams, and we'll talk about this, the teams that
- 6:46Speaker 3: are built solely from recruits are not the ones that
- 6:48Speaker 3: have transfers, I mean, are not the ones that give
- 6:52Speaker 3: you sustain success over a long period of time. So
- 6:55Speaker 3: I do think that's the next step. I don't have
- 6:58Speaker 3: any questions about his ability to develop talent or spot
- 7:02Speaker 3: talent that other people are missing, and to take the
- 7:05Speaker 3: guys he has and make them play good football. It's
- 7:07Speaker 3: just a matter of how high can the ceiling be
- 7:11Speaker 3: if you're not building with those top, higher tier recruits.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I think there's a direct correlation between stars and recruiting
- 7:17Speaker 3: rankings and all of that and consistent national championship caliber success.
- 7:21Speaker 3: So again, he's in year two of a long building project,
- 7:25Speaker 3: and I think that he's done very well in the
- 7:27Speaker 3: first year is obviously incredibly well, but I think long
- 7:29Speaker 3: term he's going to have to make that part better,
- 7:33Speaker 3: to make this an annual thing.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Whatever, if it's a building project, I mean, I think
- 7:39Speaker 1: Indiana fans will take more of the same what he's
- 7:42Speaker 1: done the first two years if he can continue to
- 7:44Speaker 1: build off this. I mean, it's it's been remarkable just
- 7:47Speaker 1: to watch.
- 7:48Speaker 3: And I think his bad years will from an old perspective,
- 7:52Speaker 3: look great, you know, I mean, you know, I mean,
- 7:54Speaker 3: for you know, you will consistently win nine games at
- 7:57Speaker 3: Indiana and everybody should be thrilled with that. Now the
- 7:59Speaker 3: expect are going to raise. But if you want to
- 8:01Speaker 3: do more than that, I think he's really got to,
- 8:04Speaker 3: you know, bulk out that recruiting class.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so switching gears here obviously to basketball. That's kind
- 8:13Speaker 1: of what the Bread and Butter podcast on the Brink
- 8:17Speaker 1: has been for such a long period of time. And
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, you you've been on some of the postgame
- 8:23Speaker 1: shows this year for Assembly Call. I know it's kind
- 8:27Speaker 1: of a different setup now with Jared not being on
- 8:29Speaker 1: there as much, but I feel like you and coach
- 8:32Speaker 1: probably have as good a feel as anybody for the
- 8:35Speaker 1: temperature of the fan base because you're on these shows
- 8:37Speaker 1: and you're probably seeing some of the comments that people
- 8:39Speaker 1: are leaving after the wins and the losses.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Where do you feel like.
- 8:45Speaker 1: This team is right now through eleven games and how
- 8:48Speaker 1: the fan base feels about how things have gone so far.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I think through the last performances are objectively just
- 8:53Speaker 3: not good performance. I thought at first half against Kentucky
- 8:56Speaker 3: they really weathered a storm of some bad luck, some
- 8:59Speaker 3: bad fouls, missing shots all that had a I think
- 9:02Speaker 3: a seven point lead at the half, and I was
- 9:03Speaker 3: kind of like, well, this is how it is. After
- 9:06Speaker 3: what it looks like a bad half, I think they're
- 9:08Speaker 3: gonna win this game. And then really just fell apart
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the second half. And you know, against Louisville, they
- 9:13Speaker 3: you know, that was a nine point loss, it felt
- 9:16Speaker 3: like fifteen, you know, or so, and they kind of
- 9:18Speaker 3: cleaned it up at the end. Minnesota really not a
- 9:21Speaker 3: good good performance at all either, And I think the
- 9:24Speaker 3: the issues in all three games were pretty much the same.
- 9:27Speaker 2: There's there's a.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Lack of upper level athleticism and size on this team
- 9:33Speaker 3: that really struggles when it's pressured and so and you
- 9:37Speaker 3: got to in that case, you gotta hit a lot
- 9:39Speaker 3: of shots to make up for that.
- 9:40Speaker 2: You got to find ways to get shots and make them.
- 9:42Speaker 3: They did against Penn State, and I thought they played
- 9:44Speaker 3: a lot better against Penn State in more of an
- 9:46Speaker 3: attacking mindset than a kind of rushing and running away
- 9:50Speaker 3: from pressure mindset.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think that you can objectively say those are.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Three pretty bad performances. I can also say that it
- 9:57Speaker 3: is the first year of a new coach's tenure, so
- 10:01Speaker 3: I do think we need to give it a little
- 10:02Speaker 3: bit of pause when you recognize that none of these
- 10:04Speaker 3: players have ever played together before.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I mean, I end Right and Debries have played together before.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You know, there's little things, but as a group, this
- 10:11Speaker 3: this group has not been together before, and it's very
- 10:14Speaker 3: tough to build that chemistry in short order.
- 10:17Speaker 2: That's why they went to Puerto Rico. That's why they
- 10:18Speaker 2: played those big exhibition games.
- 10:22Speaker 3: So I think that the temperature the fan base is impatient,
- 10:24Speaker 3: and the fan base is impatient. Not everybody, but there's
- 10:27Speaker 3: a chunk of the famish that's very impatient. The reason
- 10:29Speaker 3: they're impatience is because Indiana hasn't been.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Very good for a decade pretty much.
- 10:33Speaker 3: And I think that that gives you.
- 10:37Speaker 2: A short clock or people will be patient.
- 10:39Speaker 3: And I think I do think that part of the
- 10:43Speaker 3: issue is just the way the roster is constructed, and
- 10:46Speaker 3: not all of that is on the coaching staff. They
- 10:49Speaker 3: tried to bring in other players in this recruiting class
- 10:51Speaker 3: that just signed. They were trying to get some some
- 10:54Speaker 3: more big guys, some athletic big guys who can move
- 10:56Speaker 3: around and maybe hit some shots on the outside and
- 10:58Speaker 3: do some things something that's missing from this year's team,
- 11:01Speaker 3: and they just missed. You cannot force kids to go
- 11:03Speaker 3: to your school, and so I think that's part of
- 11:06Speaker 3: the problem. And I think another part of the problem
- 11:09Speaker 3: is just the limited upside of some of the guys
- 11:11Speaker 3: on the team is really hurting them at the moment.
- 11:15Speaker 1: What so far has maybe been the most encouraging thing
- 11:18Speaker 1: in terms of what you've seen from this team through
- 11:20Speaker 1: eleven games.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I like the style of basketball. I think it's a
- 11:23Speaker 3: style of basketball that can win at the college level.
- 11:25Speaker 3: It's this team is heavily reliant on three point shooting
- 11:28Speaker 3: because of the way it's constructed, but the spacing the
- 11:31Speaker 3: ball movement, when that offense is being run correctly, you
- 11:35Speaker 3: see it, you get it. It looks like upper tier
- 11:38Speaker 3: college basketball, and it looks like the kind of system
- 11:42Speaker 3: that wins nowadays, and so that's been encouraging to me.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I think that the discouraging part is you need a
- 11:48Speaker 3: guy who can get to the rim to make this
- 11:50Speaker 3: system really hum and they don't really have that. An
- 11:53Speaker 3: upper level guy who could beat the first level defender,
- 11:56Speaker 3: draw the second level of defense to them, then create
- 11:58Speaker 3: those kickout lanes or finish the rim. You need that
- 12:01Speaker 3: guy or else it just turns into overplaying the three
- 12:04Speaker 3: point line, and I think that they don't have the
- 12:07Speaker 3: guy to do that right now. And I think, you know,
- 12:09Speaker 3: a guy on the point, like taking Connorway, he's up
- 12:11Speaker 3: and down, but when he's on, I love it. I
- 12:13Speaker 3: love the way he plays. I love his aggressiveness on
- 12:15Speaker 3: both ends. Connor inright, I love his defense. They're both
- 12:18Speaker 3: limited in certain in various ways, and that shows up
- 12:22Speaker 3: when the team isn't playing well, and so I do
- 12:25Speaker 3: think that's the big key they're missing on offense. Defensively, again,
- 12:30Speaker 3: just it's a lot of the rebounding issues because of
- 12:33Speaker 3: the lack of size and athleticism, and I think just
- 12:36Speaker 3: having a rim protector that can actually intimidate driving lanes and.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Things like that are both two things that are missing.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Going back to connor Way for a second, because I
- 12:45Speaker 1: think you bring up an interesting point just in terms
- 12:47Speaker 1: of how crucial he is to this team. And he
- 12:51Speaker 1: is a guy that can go a little bit to
- 12:54Speaker 1: the rim, but a lot of times when you look
- 12:57Speaker 1: at the guys that transfer up from the to low
- 13:00Speaker 1: major teams that like to get to the rim and finish,
- 13:04Speaker 1: a lot of those plays that that he finished last
- 13:06Speaker 1: year probably at Troy are not so easy now to
- 13:08Speaker 1: finish at Indiana, and I think it's going to get
- 13:10Speaker 1: even tougher as the Big Ten schedule rolls around, I
- 13:15Speaker 1: think from a just Indiana being able to reach its
- 13:18Speaker 1: ceiling as a team, he's a crucial not just from
- 13:23Speaker 1: the being able to finish in the paint, but making
- 13:25Speaker 1: better decisions. If you watch that Onentucky game, the first game,
- 13:29Speaker 1: the first half on they built that seven point lead,
- 13:31Speaker 1: I don't think he had a turnover that first half
- 13:33Speaker 1: at all. Second half he comes out turns the ball
- 13:35Speaker 1: over four times. And thinking back to a conversation I
- 13:40Speaker 1: have with Darren de Reeze back in the summer when
- 13:41Speaker 1: I got a chance to sit down and talk to him.
- 13:43Speaker 1: He mentioned with Connorway, you kind of have to take
- 13:46Speaker 1: some of the he likes to take chances. You kind
- 13:49Speaker 1: of have to take some of that with the the
- 13:53Speaker 1: good with the bad. In terms of how he plays
- 13:56Speaker 1: how likely, I guess you think it is that he
- 14:01Speaker 1: can kind of adapt on the fly and maybe makes,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you know, make it more of a habit of kind
- 14:08Speaker 1: of making the simple play more often than not, because
- 14:10Speaker 1: it seems like when he does play under control and
- 14:14Speaker 1: just makes a simple play, he's pretty effective. But as
- 14:17Speaker 1: you saw in the Kentucky game, he had a couple
- 14:20Speaker 1: of drives where he just gets up in the air,
- 14:22Speaker 1: throws the ball away, or just makes a poor decision.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And that's really when those are really the mistakes that
- 14:27Speaker 1: he can't afford, especially on a team that they don't have.
- 14:32Speaker 1: You mentioned being a guy being able to just drive
- 14:38Speaker 1: to the rim and score, but they really like when
- 14:40Speaker 1: defenses are really putting pressure on Devrees and Wilkerson, they
- 14:45Speaker 1: don't really have an easy way to get a bucket.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Everything feels hard, and that's one of the limitations to
- 14:50Speaker 1: the team. So I think Connorway in many ways is
- 14:53Speaker 1: a key just from the standpoint of all right, you
- 14:56Speaker 1: have this talent, you can go off the bounce, you're
- 14:58Speaker 1: relatively good at getting the bad in the ain't. But
- 15:00Speaker 1: when he gets there, he needs to be better with
- 15:03Speaker 1: his decisions.
- 15:04Speaker 3: I I one hundred percent agree, and I think that
- 15:06Speaker 3: that he's a guy who, at least in the Kentucky
- 15:08Speaker 3: game and at some other points I've noticed this, but
- 15:11Speaker 3: only for a player too. But if he makes a mistake,
- 15:14Speaker 3: he'll then come down and want to make up for
- 15:16Speaker 3: it and sometimes wind up compounding that.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Mistake with another. And as for a senior, that's discouraging.
- 15:22Speaker 3: You know, a couple a couple of things I've seen,
- 15:24Speaker 3: you know, especially in that Kentucky game and they turn
- 15:26Speaker 3: the ball over. All the place is seeing these upper
- 15:28Speaker 3: classmen and seniors making these mistakes.
- 15:30Speaker 2: That's what's discouraged.
- 15:31Speaker 3: If they're all freshmen, you say, well, that's the way
- 15:33Speaker 3: freshmen play, and they'll figure it out and they'll get better.
- 15:36Speaker 3: These guys, I think are feeling pressure to deliver immediately,
- 15:40Speaker 3: and they should be because of you know, how veteran
- 15:43Speaker 3: they are and really are struggling, and I think that's
- 15:45Speaker 3: just compounding the pressure on themselves for that. So yeah,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I think he is. He really is a hinge point
- 15:52Speaker 3: for the team, both offensively and defensively. If he guards
- 15:54Speaker 3: without fouling, he's actually he's an outstanding point of attack defender,
- 15:58Speaker 3: and I think that he really in Big ten play
- 16:01Speaker 3: will be very important. I think one of the things
- 16:04Speaker 3: defensively for me that has been so discouraging is how
- 16:08Speaker 3: much they're fouling. Now, they're bad fouls called across college basketball,
- 16:12Speaker 3: but I am seeing a lot of guarding with hands,
- 16:15Speaker 3: a lot of slapping down at the ball, things like
- 16:17Speaker 3: that that you are taught not to do, and that
- 16:19Speaker 3: they will in a big game, they will whistle you
- 16:22Speaker 3: for immediately. You're playing a good you can get away
- 16:24Speaker 3: with that against a bad team. You're not going to
- 16:26Speaker 3: get away with that against Michigan. And so this team
- 16:29Speaker 3: is also so thin because of injuries. They cannot afford
- 16:34Speaker 3: to go to second that second unit because there isn't
- 16:36Speaker 3: much of one right now. And so those leaders, those veterans,
- 16:40Speaker 3: need to get better at staying on the floor, your
- 16:43Speaker 3: best abilities availability, you know. I mean, that's a cliche
- 16:46Speaker 3: thing to say, but it is so true. Lamar Wilkerson
- 16:49Speaker 3: sitting on the bench for ten minutes is not a
- 16:51Speaker 3: recipe for this team to win so conorway too. So
- 16:55Speaker 3: I think as until these guys get until the depth
- 16:59Speaker 3: guys get healthier and more in the flow of the game,
- 17:01Speaker 3: I mean, they have to stay on the floor. And
- 17:04Speaker 3: so again that's those are things that veteran players should
- 17:07Speaker 3: know and be able to adapt to, and you haven't
- 17:10Speaker 3: seen it so far.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think that that's a really good
- 17:14Speaker 1: point because looking I wasn't in Puerto Rico, but I
- 17:18Speaker 1: followed those games as closely as I could with Josh
- 17:20Speaker 1: being down there. But he had the spreadsheet that he
- 17:23Speaker 1: updated like throughout the game. It was keeping stats as
- 17:26Speaker 1: they go, and it was jarring even that trip how
- 17:30Speaker 1: many fouls they were picking up. And then I went
- 17:32Speaker 1: to the Baylor exhibition game, which they won, but they
- 17:35Speaker 1: didn't found anybody out and if they would have fouled
- 17:38Speaker 1: guys out, they would have had two or three guys
- 17:39Speaker 1: that filed out during that game. So it's been a
- 17:41Speaker 1: pattern over a long period of time, and you mad,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you know that that's excellent point just in terms of
- 17:46Speaker 1: the fouls that they're getting. It's not that they're sometimes
- 17:49Speaker 1: they're out of position, so they reach, but it's some
- 17:52Speaker 1: of them are just being too aggressive in times in
- 17:55Speaker 1: terms of trying to go after the ball. It's like,
- 17:57Speaker 1: just move your feet and get in a better position.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And their defensive metrics overall are pretty solid. So they
- 18:04Speaker 1: have two or three guys, you know, I would say Tucker, Devreeze,
- 18:07Speaker 1: Connorway and Wilkerston. They those guys cannot consistently be in
- 18:11Speaker 1: foul trouble in Indiana expect to win games.
- 18:14Speaker 3: The other thing, there was one one moment that I
- 18:17Speaker 3: think personifies this. It was against Minnesota. They put the
- 18:19Speaker 3: press on and they had I don't remember who it was,
- 18:22Speaker 3: trapped in the corner off the press. It was exactly
- 18:24Speaker 3: what they wanted and they hadn't pinned. He had nowhere
- 18:26Speaker 3: to go, and Tucker slapped down at the ball to
- 18:28Speaker 3: try and get a steal. And it's like you have
- 18:30Speaker 3: him in the corner. Even if you slap the ball out,
- 18:32Speaker 3: it's gonna go out of bounce that you can't steal that.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Like there's no just calm down, take a breath, and
- 18:37Speaker 3: you've got exactly what you want here. He tries to
- 18:40Speaker 3: pass this, you've got somebody running up to steal it. Like,
- 18:43Speaker 3: whatever happens is going to be bad for Minnesota, and
- 18:45Speaker 3: then to slap down and give him an easy out
- 18:47Speaker 3: to free throws is you know, just that's just not
- 18:50Speaker 3: smart basketball, and you have to be more aware of that,
- 18:53Speaker 3: especially from a veteran.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, especially to like you. As you mentioned, the depth
- 18:57Speaker 1: on this team is so limited. Yeah, and they don't
- 18:59Speaker 1: really to guard. Depth in particular is well, really it's
- 19:02Speaker 1: across the roster because there's no front court.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Dept at all.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I think they're hopeful that I think Jason Drake can
- 19:08Speaker 1: get back here soon. I don't know Josh Harris at
- 19:10Speaker 1: some point, but they've got to develop at least one
- 19:12Speaker 1: or two more guys that are consistent option if they
- 19:15Speaker 1: hope to, you know, eventually make the NCAA tournament. The
- 19:19Speaker 1: other the other thing that's been interesting to watch is
- 19:24Speaker 1: just how they've used Reed Bailey. And I think this
- 19:29Speaker 1: is maybe more of on Reed Bailey than it is
- 19:32Speaker 1: the coaching staff, because he is a guy that came
- 19:38Speaker 1: from Davidson had really good numbers last year, but he
- 19:41Speaker 1: kind of looked at his rebounding numbers. They weren't great.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I think he averaged eighteen points a game, but he
- 19:46Speaker 1: was an all A ten type of player, So to me,
- 19:49Speaker 1: he's a guy that's whose game should have translated at
- 19:52Speaker 1: least somewhat to the Big Ten. But it seems like
- 19:55Speaker 1: he's either playing really well or giving them absolutely nothing.
- 20:00Speaker 1: There's really not much in between. Like the Kansas State
- 20:02Speaker 1: game played really well, Penn State game played really well,
- 20:06Speaker 1: but these had other games, the Louisville game and the
- 20:09Speaker 1: Kentucky game he looked basically unplayable.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Yeah, which one do you think.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Is the real reed Bailey? And when we get to
- 20:17Speaker 1: the meat of the Big ten schedule, is it going
- 20:18Speaker 1: to be the guy that we saw against Louisville Kentucky
- 20:21Speaker 1: or is it going to be the guy that played
- 20:24Speaker 1: against Kansas State and Penn State? Because I don't think
- 20:28Speaker 1: Indiana can afford to have him basically offering nothing statistically
- 20:32Speaker 1: and expect to win games with any consistency.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Well, correct you, They absolutely cannot have that this season.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I mean, as you said, there's basically no frontcourt and
- 20:42Speaker 3: no length or you know, a ton of size. They
- 20:44Speaker 3: need him to be something. I'm going to give a
- 20:46Speaker 3: real boring answer to say, I think the answer is
- 20:49Speaker 3: probably somewhere in the middle. But I think the thing
- 20:51Speaker 3: Reed Bailey needs to take personally is everybody across the
- 20:55Speaker 3: Big ten is going to look at him and say
- 20:56Speaker 3: he's soft. I'm going to attack him right in his chest,
- 20:59Speaker 3: and I'm gonna push him around when he goes to
- 21:02Speaker 3: post up. I'm gonna push him around on cuts. I'm
- 21:04Speaker 3: gonna get right up in his face when he has
- 21:06Speaker 3: the ball. Because if you look at Reed Bailey's build,
- 21:09Speaker 3: that's immediately what you think. He's a tall, kind of
- 21:11Speaker 3: lanky guy, doesn't have a lot of meat on him.
- 21:13Speaker 3: He's not super strong, he doesn't come across as super strong.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Against Penn State played pretty dang well. Against Kansas State
- 21:19Speaker 3: played pretty dang well.
- 21:20Speaker 2: He has the ability to do that.
- 21:22Speaker 3: It's just he cannot be intimidated by going up against
- 21:26Speaker 3: size and strength, and they're gonna try and push him
- 21:28Speaker 3: around and intimidate him all season. And he's another guy.
- 21:31Speaker 3: He and Connorway are just if they play well.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Indiana can win.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Maybe not against anybody, but against most teams on their schedule,
- 21:39Speaker 3: they can probably win if those two guys give you
- 21:42Speaker 3: what they're capable of. If they don't, either one of
- 21:44Speaker 3: them doesn't.
- 21:45Speaker 2: I think it's real hard.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I think it gets real difficult because teams are just
- 21:48Speaker 3: going to try and take away Wilkerson in devrees on
- 21:51Speaker 3: the three point line. As you said, there's no easy
- 21:53Speaker 3: baskets when you do that. If those guys don't have
- 21:56Speaker 3: something going on. Sam alexis God loved him, tries on
- 21:59Speaker 3: the ball, you know, to score, and he's more aggressive
- 22:02Speaker 3: and it's sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But this
- 22:08Speaker 3: those two guys are going to be very important. And
- 22:09Speaker 3: I'll also say I think Cicily's gonna be very important.
- 22:12Speaker 3: And he's a freshman, so when he has a bad game,
- 22:13Speaker 3: you're like, but he's a freshman. You expect that to
- 22:15Speaker 3: be up and down. But his development is gonna be
- 22:18Speaker 3: very important coming from that second wave. His ability to
- 22:21Speaker 3: hit from the outside, his ability to take it to
- 22:23Speaker 3: his confidence taking it to the rim or posting up
- 22:26Speaker 3: or any of those things can be very important for
- 22:28Speaker 3: this team as it moves forward. And it's unfair to
- 22:31Speaker 3: him that he's got to have an accelerated learning curve
- 22:33Speaker 3: as well. But those two guys Conorway and Bailey really
- 22:36Speaker 3: have to get it together or India is gonna struggle.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the one thing that I've noticed when
- 22:42Speaker 1: Bailey plays well, he's playing more in space in terms
- 22:47Speaker 1: of getting kind of on the move towards the basket.
- 22:50Speaker 1: When he's in a situation where he has to post
- 22:53Speaker 1: up or try to like go at someone's chest in
- 22:55Speaker 1: the stationary yeah, it's not usually a good outcome. But
- 22:59Speaker 1: when in is able to maybe put him in a
- 23:01Speaker 1: ball screen situation or have him catch the ball at
- 23:04Speaker 1: the high post and you get a cut in the
- 23:07Speaker 1: floor space out better, he seems to be more effective.
- 23:09Speaker 1: So I'm not sure why that's happening in certain games
- 23:13Speaker 1: and why it said. I'm not a coach, but it's
- 23:15Speaker 1: just an observation and i think something to watch moving forward,
- 23:18Speaker 1: because as poor as some of the games that he's
- 23:23Speaker 1: played have been, you also have those other games where
- 23:27Speaker 1: he's played really well. So anything the coaching staff can
- 23:31Speaker 1: make it to be where maybe it isn't more in
- 23:33Speaker 1: the middle of those performances at least gets something out
- 23:35Speaker 1: of him. Whether it's yeah, six or eight points and
- 23:38Speaker 1: four or five rebounds. It can't be a situation like
- 23:40Speaker 1: the one at Kentucky where I'm pretty sure he didn't
- 23:43Speaker 1: score a point and have one rebound. So that's just
- 23:46Speaker 1: not a sustainable formula when you're trying to go on
- 23:49Speaker 1: the Kentucky game. In many ways, if you look at
- 23:51Speaker 1: some of the stats, it's incredible that it was as
- 23:54Speaker 1: close as it was. They say, varrible from three point
- 23:57Speaker 1: line they got killed that you know was chance points
- 24:01Speaker 1: and they made like less than twenty percent of the
- 24:03Speaker 1: threes and they lost by twelve.
- 24:05Speaker 2: So I mean they asked what that says about Kentucky.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Not being able to really blow them out of that
- 24:10Speaker 1: game based on how poorly they played.
- 24:11Speaker 2: But there was a lot of things that went terrible
- 24:14Speaker 2: for Indiana.
- 24:14Speaker 3: That I mean, somehow Indiana out rebounded Kentucky and that, well,
- 24:17Speaker 3: that was the stat that stood out to me the most,
- 24:19Speaker 3: just like what and I guess it's because so many
- 24:21Speaker 3: turnovers kind of even you know, like late lead you
- 24:24Speaker 3: to believe differently than it actually is. Well, Kentucky got
- 24:27Speaker 3: fourteen more shots in the game, I know, if I.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Mean, you know, Indiana med in that game.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Indianimated and I'm going off memory here, but they made
- 24:34Speaker 3: fifteen shots I think in the entire game. Actually said
- 24:37Speaker 3: four of twenty four from three and and yeah, I
- 24:40Speaker 3: mean Kentucky shot very poorly as well under forty percent,
- 24:44Speaker 3: and then I think they were like they only made
- 24:45Speaker 3: like three threes and and so you know, that's what
- 24:48Speaker 3: kept them in the game, quite frankly, and I think
- 24:50Speaker 3: it was more Kentucky not as you said, not taking
- 24:53Speaker 3: advantage than it was in Kentucky play the same way
- 24:55Speaker 3: in the first half as they did in the second half,
- 24:57Speaker 3: that it would have been a twenty point game. So
- 25:00Speaker 3: I think that then a lot of that was was
- 25:02Speaker 3: based on just Kentucky not performing well, and Kentucky hasn't
- 25:06Speaker 3: had a great.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Season so far.
- 25:07Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean the the no points in one rebound,
- 25:10Speaker 3: only playing I think he had a fewer than ten
- 25:12Speaker 3: minutes in that game, you know, and and it's like
- 25:14Speaker 3: you can't do that, man. I know he was coming
- 25:16Speaker 3: off the bench, but he's got to be able to play,
- 25:18Speaker 3: and he's got to be playable.
- 25:19Speaker 2: As you said, there are.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Times he looks unplayable and they they have to play him.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I mean it's there's no depth, they have to play him.
- 25:27Speaker 2: And so yeah, I think that's reed.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Bailey's just got to kind of it's gonna be a
- 25:31Speaker 3: type thing where, yeah, Debries has to and the staff
- 25:34Speaker 3: has to do something to game it out, so he
- 25:35Speaker 3: is in a better position, as you said, figure out
- 25:38Speaker 3: where he's most effective and use him more in that way.
- 25:40Speaker 3: But Bailey himself has just got to take offense to
- 25:43Speaker 3: the fact that people are going to try and push
- 25:44Speaker 3: him around and turn it on.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And he looked he had that. Kansas State came agreed
- 25:49Speaker 2: that was that.
- 25:50Speaker 3: I thought that was the turning point, But it's kind
- 25:52Speaker 3: of gone back and forth, and I think that, yeah,
- 25:55Speaker 3: he definitely needs to to take it on himself to
- 25:57Speaker 3: to step up.
- 25:59Speaker 1: The other thing I want to get your take on,
- 26:01Speaker 1: and this is just to me as someone who follows
- 26:03Speaker 1: the analytics and the computers and everything as closely as
- 26:07Speaker 1: I do. It's just been refreshing to see Indiana and
- 26:12Speaker 1: these a lot of these guarantee games just blow teams
- 26:14Speaker 1: away and help their numbers. And then and the losses
- 26:18Speaker 1: that they did have you said the Kentucky the Louisville
- 26:20Speaker 1: game felt like fifteen. It could have been fifteen or twenty,
- 26:23Speaker 1: and they lose by I think nine. That actually goes
- 26:27Speaker 1: into the overall strength of the computer numbers, because a
- 26:34Speaker 1: twenty point loss is viewed much definity than a nine
- 26:37Speaker 1: point loss. So that's one thing that again, no loss
- 26:41Speaker 1: should be viewed as a good thing or acceptable. But
- 26:43Speaker 1: I think the overall understanding from debries just in terms
- 26:46Speaker 1: of the numbers and how to kind of manipulate those.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I mean, Indiana's twenty six and can palm right now.
- 26:51Speaker 1: They started the season at forty. So as bad as
- 26:54Speaker 1: some people think three of the four last three of
- 26:57Speaker 1: the last four games have been they've still made up
- 27:01Speaker 1: grounds since the beginning of the season. What the preseason
- 27:03Speaker 1: expectations are. There's obviously a lot of basketball to play
- 27:06Speaker 1: in the Big Ten, and we'll see they're gonna have
- 27:07Speaker 1: to actually start winning some of these high profile games
- 27:10Speaker 1: to build a tournament resume. But overall, I think if
- 27:13Speaker 1: you told me before the season that Indiana would be
- 27:15Speaker 1: eight and three right now, I thought maybe they'd be
- 27:18Speaker 1: nine to two. So the Minnesota game was I figured
- 27:21Speaker 1: they could.
- 27:21Speaker 2: They could. That's truly the one.
- 27:23Speaker 1: But that's really the only one that you look at
- 27:24Speaker 1: and say, you know, so far, they've performed just about
- 27:28Speaker 1: what you expected.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I mean yeah, if it started today, they'd
- 27:31Speaker 3: be in the tournament. No quie, I think easily be
- 27:33Speaker 3: in the tournament. And I think that that's because of
- 27:35Speaker 3: where their ranking comcruters. And you're right, I think the
- 27:38Speaker 3: overall understanding of like just don't get blown out and
- 27:42Speaker 3: blow out the teams are supposed to blow out, and
- 27:44Speaker 3: they've been able to do that. They've done exactly what
- 27:46Speaker 3: they had to do. In the lower tier games. I
- 27:50Speaker 3: think linden Wood felt a little closer than it need
- 27:52Speaker 3: to be for a while, but they wound up winning
- 27:54Speaker 3: by twenty and even if it's not a great performance,
- 27:56Speaker 3: one by twenty incarnate word too close, But all right,
- 28:00Speaker 3: I eight, that's your one screw up in those games.
- 28:03Speaker 3: But yeah, I thought that. You know, in the Louisville game,
- 28:06Speaker 3: it looked like they pushed it as hard as they
- 28:07Speaker 3: could to make it a little bit closer at the
- 28:09Speaker 3: end and kept playing. And then Minnesota, you know, I
- 28:14Speaker 3: lost to Minnesota's bad, but again, it's not fifteen twenty points,
- 28:18Speaker 3: and that is important. And I know people used to
- 28:20Speaker 3: say last you know, last year, I used to get
- 28:22Speaker 3: a lot from people it was like, well if they
- 28:24Speaker 3: lose the Gonzaga by twenty five, why does it matter
- 28:27Speaker 3: they lost, And it's like, well, it really actually matters,
- 28:30Speaker 3: and so you know, whether that's okay or not, and
- 28:33Speaker 3: whether that's the system we should be using or not.
- 28:36Speaker 3: The teams that take advantage like knowing that and taking
- 28:39Speaker 3: advantage of that system is smart when it comes down
- 28:42Speaker 3: to March and you're on the bubble and you need
- 28:44Speaker 3: to get into the tournament. So yeah, I think I
- 28:48Speaker 3: do think it's been They've done all the right things.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I mean, you look at the metrics, and I think
- 28:52Speaker 3: based on how they've played, I don't think people would
- 28:56Speaker 3: know that their number eighteenth, number eighteen in DEFENSI of fiefficiency.
- 29:00Speaker 3: They're number fifty in offensive efficiency, which given debris system,
- 29:04Speaker 3: should be much higher. But it's not as bad as
- 29:08Speaker 3: I think we think it is. Based on the latter
- 29:11Speaker 3: the three line, I mean.
- 29:12Speaker 1: To be eighteenth in defensive efficiency right now with how
- 29:16Speaker 1: much they're fouling and the lack of really any rim
- 29:18Speaker 1: production is pretty expressed. I think from what could I
- 29:23Speaker 1: mean imagine in future years if they have a big
- 29:26Speaker 1: who's more more more of an athlete, the shot blocker,
- 29:29Speaker 1: guy that can challenge shots, well, I mean you could
- 29:33Speaker 1: change things.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Well and you look last year and his West Virginia
- 29:37Speaker 3: team was pretty high, don't they They were, Yeah, they
- 29:40Speaker 3: were top. Yeah, they were fifteenth, and I mean they
- 29:43Speaker 3: were missing their two of their best scorers and finished
- 29:45Speaker 3: one hundred and thirty fourth in offense, which is the
- 29:47Speaker 3: opposite of what you'd think his system would provide. But
- 29:50Speaker 3: he's coached good defenses, and so I think that it
- 29:54Speaker 3: is encouraging to see that.
- 29:55Speaker 2: For sure.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I think you're right, especially with the lack of athleticism
- 29:59Speaker 3: and upper tier athleticism and upper tier size.
- 30:01Speaker 2: On this team to be eighteenth defense.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Now they're gonna play some tougher games and we'll see
- 30:05Speaker 3: how that pans out.
- 30:06Speaker 2: But so far, that's pretty dang good.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Last thing before we kind of wrap up here just
- 30:12Speaker 1: in terms of just Devreese and you know, we've talked
- 30:16Speaker 1: about the basketball, but in terms of how he's handled
- 30:20Speaker 1: the job so far, how he's engaged the fan base,
- 30:22Speaker 1: how he's kind of dealt with the pressure of the
- 30:27Speaker 1: job so far. How do you think, I mean, I
- 30:29Speaker 1: know you're not up close and around the team, but
- 30:31Speaker 1: you're kind of watching them from afar, You're I'm sure
- 30:33Speaker 1: you're watching some of the press conferences and things like that.
- 30:35Speaker 2: How do you does he seem like the.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Indiana like he's comfortable yet as being the Indiana basketball coach.
- 30:42Speaker 2: I think that I said when he got hired.
- 30:43Speaker 3: I don't think he's ever going to be the politician
- 30:46Speaker 3: that's out there, you know, like like a John Calipari
- 30:49Speaker 3: who's just the most charm in you know, I'm sorry
- 30:52Speaker 3: to say this Indiana fans, but a very charming guy
- 30:54Speaker 3: who's like in press conference is like holding court and
- 30:58Speaker 3: having fun with it and is that you know, you
- 31:00Speaker 3: want to be one on one with that guy.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I don't think he's going to be that guy.
- 31:03Speaker 3: But I do think that the one word I keep
- 31:05Speaker 3: getting from people since that, you know, right after he
- 31:08Speaker 3: got Hiredrik he's really humble and he's not, you know,
- 31:10Speaker 3: above He doesn't. He doesn't feel like he's above anything else.
- 31:14Speaker 3: So he's willing to take in new ideas. He's willing
- 31:16Speaker 3: to adjust what he's doing. He's willing to go to
- 31:19Speaker 3: Kurt Signetti and talk to him about coaching and things
- 31:22Speaker 3: like that. So I'm like, some guys don't do that.
- 31:24Speaker 3: They they know best and it's going to be theirs.
- 31:26Speaker 3: I think that's really important. I also think he's very
- 31:29Speaker 3: even keeled, Like I think he doesn't get too high,
- 31:32Speaker 3: it doesn't get too low, and I think that's going
- 31:34Speaker 3: to be very important for the program moving forward, because
- 31:37Speaker 3: the truth is in sports, very few programs are always
- 31:40Speaker 3: having a good season. In college sports, there's ups and downs.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Even the best programs are gonna have off, off seasons,
- 31:47Speaker 3: off stretches, and you need to like not panic.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And I think he's that guy.
- 31:52Speaker 3: We'll see how he adapts his coaching style as this
- 31:55Speaker 3: season goes on, and then also looking at how this
- 31:58Speaker 3: roster has built, how it goes move being forward. What
- 32:00Speaker 3: he prioritizes may change based on what happened in his
- 32:03Speaker 3: first year in the Big Tent. Uh. But I will
- 32:06Speaker 3: say I think that he's definitely a guy who's pliable
- 32:08Speaker 3: and willing to He's he's less of an ideologue and
- 32:13Speaker 3: more of a let's figure out what works kind of guy.
- 32:15Speaker 3: And I think I think that's very much a positive
- 32:17Speaker 3: for for how you moving forward.
- 32:19Speaker 2: For sure.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I mean I think so far, I feel like he's
- 32:22Speaker 1: handled everything well. I don't think the scrutiny has obviously
- 32:25Speaker 1: been what it's going to. I mean, you know, it's
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know, there could be a schedule in January gets
- 32:32Speaker 1: really tough towards the back end of January if they
- 32:34Speaker 1: lose four or five or something like that, five of six,
- 32:38Speaker 1: obviously it's gonna get We all know what it's like
- 32:42Speaker 1: when indianas like they're winning against Penn State and having
- 32:45Speaker 1: that great win, and all of a sudden, people are thinking, well,
- 32:47Speaker 1: this could be a team that makes a tournament. Wins
- 32:50Speaker 1: a game, and then they're losing like they did a
- 32:52Speaker 1: Kentucky looking as bad as they did in the second half.
- 32:54Speaker 1: People are wanting, as this team and we're gonna get
- 32:55Speaker 1: the tournament. I think the truth is probably somewhere in
- 32:57Speaker 1: the middle. This is probably a bubble team. I mean, realistically,
- 33:01Speaker 1: I picked him in tenth in the Big Ten before
- 33:03Speaker 1: the season. I think that's probably right around where they
- 33:06Speaker 1: are right now. I mean I did power rankings on
- 33:09Speaker 1: the site recently. I think I had him ninth, which
- 33:12Speaker 1: is probably fair for.
- 33:14Speaker 2: What they are. We'll see.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's encouraging to me that seems to have a coherent
- 33:21Speaker 1: plan for how he wants to run his program. I
- 33:24Speaker 1: agree with you on the even Keel they I was interested, Laura.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I listen to his radio show Earli this week on
- 33:28Speaker 1: the night he's never gotten a technical as a head.
- 33:31Speaker 2: I know that shocked believe that.
- 33:33Speaker 3: No. I mean I think that you know, your assistant
- 33:35Speaker 3: says something and they blame you, like at some point
- 33:37Speaker 3: you know that.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I mean that's got to change by the end of
- 33:40Speaker 1: this Big ten season.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, given given some of the fouls
- 33:43Speaker 2: they've been absorbing lately, some of the calls they've been
- 33:46Speaker 2: absorbing lately, I would be shocked.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so Ryan, thanks for thanks as always for for
- 33:52Speaker 1: hopping on the show. I really appreciate it.

- 34:07Speaker 1: you're not on others. Is just kind of based on
- 34:08Speaker 1: your availability with work.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that you know this stretch, I've
- 34:13Speaker 3: been travel I've been moving around, traveling a lot. But
- 34:15Speaker 3: I think once the Big ten season really kicks in,
- 34:17Speaker 3: I'll probably be on, if not all, most just because
- 34:21Speaker 3: you know, that's it's more. That's more when we plan
- 34:24Speaker 3: to be on because the early season stuff is around
- 34:26Speaker 3: the holidays is tough. But yeah, I think for Big
- 34:29Speaker 3: Ten you can count of me being there for the
- 34:30Speaker 3: most for the most part.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Any chance you make it out to either of the
- 34:34Speaker 1: games against UCLA and usc.
