- 0:01Hey listeners, it's Thursday again.
- 0:05Jason's here with me, and I promise you.
- 0:09That this is the last time we're going to talk about this goofball swarm that was hived by a couple of goofball beekeepers.
- 0:20Jason say hi to everybody.
- 0:22Hi everybody.
- 0:23I'm doing the walk bike.
- 0:25You know the drill.
- 0:27It's really a nice day.
- 0:29It's been
- 0:31Raining a lot and it's still cool.
- 0:33Wooster didn't really have a warm spring this time.
- 0:39We're gonna see if we can decide what to do with this and give you the end end story
- 0:45The last version of what went on.
- 0:50Listeners, I'm Jim Tew here at Honey Bee Obscura.
- 0:54I come to you once a week with some kind of talk on some plain talk beacon.
- 0:59Keeping issue.
- 1:02Welcome to Honey Bee Obscura, brought to you by Growing Planet Media, the producers of the Beekeeping Today podcast.
- 1:12Join Jim Tew, your guide.
- 1:14Through the complexities, the beauty, the fun, and the challenges of managing honey bees.
- 1:21Jim hosts fun and interesting guests who take a deep dive into the intricate world of honey bees.
- 1:27Whether you're a seasoned beekeeper,
- 1:29are just getting started.
- 1:31Get ready for some plain talk that'll delve into all things honey bees.
- 1:35Those bees, that swarm, and we're walking through the little barn shed.
- 1:41That swarm is so beaten up.
- 1:44Until we didn't bother it.
- 1:48And we we honestly have not opened it, listeners.
- 1:51I've we tried to tell you.
- 1:53I may give a review here in a bit for those of you who just have only heard this issue.
- 1:58We've never opened it.
- 2:02And it looks to be big enough to require a smoker.
- 2:06What do you think, Jason?
- 2:08Yeah.
- 2:10I hate to go with no smoke and then find out we gotta have smoke and be recording all of this.
- 2:16We look goofy enough already
- 2:20Yeah, the activity is nice.
- 2:24A lot more activity today than last time I was out here
- 2:28Yeah, but it was really ugly the last time.
- 2:30If if this if there's if this is a successful hive, then this will be the most difficult
- 2:37most difficult swarm hiving that I've ever done.
- 2:44Jason just walked over to the scene of the crime.
- 2:48Nothing's left there.
- 2:49They're all gone.
- 2:52Listeners, to those of you who may be new to this saga, uh I I had health reasons in my family that really precluded me doing any
- 3:07work, they were serious issues with my bees, so they had to go their own way.
- 3:11And I thought they were going to die.
- 3:13I bought packages last spring.
- 3:16Sorry about the airplane.
- 3:19And my bees didn't die.
- 3:22And they were actually powerful.
- 3:26I knew swarming was going to be an issue, so I went from having not enough bees to worried about having too many bees.
- 3:32And that's where the swarm issue comes in.
- 3:34So if you're wondering why these swarms were strange, that's the reason for it.
- 3:41I think we're gonna shut down the microphones and light the smoker.
- 3:44I don't think I'll put you through all of that.
- 3:47So let's turn them off, Jason, and we'll be right back as soon as we have a smoker going
- 3:56Alright, I got a smoker going.
- 3:59You people are a clever, clever bunch.
- 4:01Why don't some of you come up with something that I can do
- 4:05Without smelling like I've been to a barbecue.
- 4:09Alright, here goes nothing.
- 4:12Oh, there's the
- 4:15There's the slatted rack I put on.
- 4:17I put an empty deep on top of a slatted rack because every time we opened it up to shake the bees out of the trap package they would come roaring out
- 4:28So I put the trap packages, the last few on upside down
- 4:37It's gonna be hard to get this out of this stuff's really propolized in.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41What started all this was that I was going to go over to one of the big box stores and look at
- 4:53Look at getting a cutter, reciprocating cutter
- 5:00That will let me get these stuck out pieces out.
- 5:06Is it possible to overextend a hive tool?
- 5:11Do you have another hive tool in the shed?
- 5:12I can this one right there in the bucket.
- 5:14Okay.
- 5:21Listener at some other time
- 5:24We're going to have a lecture on Oh my heavens Jason she honestly is here no way I don't see her but
- 5:36There's eggs.
- 5:39Excellent.
- 5:40So here take the frame and look.
- 5:42You know, listeners, here's the truth
- 5:45Jason and I talked and we thought after we made these poor people listen to this many of these episodes, did we just want to tell them that she was this queen right?
- 5:55And we had a a conscience of
- 5:59modeled confusion there for a while and we decided that we had never lied to you before and we weren't going to start today.
- 6:13She's got brood everywhere.
- 6:14She made it.
- 6:15She made the trip.
- 6:16I'm not kidding.
- 6:17Nothing's capped.
- 6:18She's got eggs and she's got three or four day old larvae.
- 6:23That queen survived the trip down the tube.
- 6:29Jason, that's all I want to say.
- 6:30Yep.
- 6:32I don't have any intent to find her or see her.
- 6:35These bees have really been through a hard place.
- 6:38I got a bee trying to see
- 6:39sting my microphone.
- 6:40Let me get her off in case she's making it hard to hear all the important stuff I'm saying.
- 6:46Putting the frames back in
- 6:49I told you this colony hadn't been opened in several years, so it's really propolized up.
- 6:55And but I got it back in.
- 6:58And here's the odd thing, since I don't have an inner cover
- 7:02I'm gonna put the sliding right back on.
- 7:10Okay, listeners, it's really a success story
- 7:15Even though we lost probably a pound to a pound and a half of the bees, there's there's bees now in two deeps.
- 7:23He's already in the upper deep.
- 7:27And everything looks really good.
- 7:31Swatting a smoker is such a pain.
- 7:35I don't know how to know how to leave it.
- 7:36I don't know how to leave it.
- 7:37Tonight when I'm dozing off, I'll be having pleasant thoughts
- 7:43To review you, I watched the swarm leave.
- 7:47They went up about 14 feet in the tree.
- 7:50I thought I'm too old.
- 7:51I'm not gonna get on a ladder.
- 7:52I couldn't resist it.
- 7:53I got on a ladder.
- 7:54I had a modest fall off the ladder.
- 7:57I reminded myself I'm not a young man, I live alone now.
- 8:02So don't be taking chances.
- 8:05I rushed out after a while and I did get a ladder and you know and tried to do it.
- 8:12I gave up so that I watched them and the weather turned cold and rainy, really cold, you know, almost in the 30s.
- 8:19So those bees made a horrible decision to leave.
- 8:23And they had to hang there.
- 8:24I knew they took enough food for about three days.
- 8:27And on the fifth day I knew they were in trouble, and that's when Jason the hero said he would climb the ladder for me
- 8:35Hero is one word for it.
- 8:37Yeah, hero is one word for it, but that's the word I chose to use, Jason.
- 8:42And Jason got up and vacuumed it down.
- 8:44Then we got too many bees in the trap cage and I thought we'd killed them again
- 8:48But we got them poured out.
- 8:49They accepted my high bodies immediately.
- 8:54We never saw the queen.
- 8:55We didn't see her today.
- 8:56I didn't look for her.
- 8:57I just saw plenty of brood
- 8:59on two frames.
- 9:00So she's in there, the swarm is down, the story is over, and it's a beautiful three or four segment issue on how not to hive a swarm
- 9:11Let's hear from our sponsors just for a minute.
- 9:15Looking to re-queen a hive, make a split, or build your own nucs this season?
- 9:21BetterBee has mated Queens available for shipment or pickup in Greenwich, New York.
- 9:27Choose from Kutik K9 Queens.
- 9:30Bred for hygienic mite resistance and strong honey production, gentle carniolan queens, known for managing hive populations with the flow, or better bees locally raised northern queens, selected for winter hard
- 9:46disease resistance, temperament, and honey production.
- 9:49Order your queens today at betterbee.
- 9:52com.
- 9:53If it was not enough already, they kept swarming.
- 10:00And I didn't have the equipment.
- 10:02And these other swarms appeared to be mating swarms.
- 10:06So what I what I did was I just took any old comb that I could find
- 10:11It's not impressive.
- 10:12I've told you that this is this is my development of slip shod beekeeping.
- 10:18So these bees are going to be stuck
- 10:21On the cover.
- 10:23Yes, they are.
- 10:24Yep.
- 10:26We knew that was going to happen, and I was going to see with without breaking off
- 10:32the one comb they'd got up to see if they have a queen in there.
- 10:39I can't tell and the comb is breaking off and I don't want that to happen
- 10:45Someone put it back.
- 10:47It's a small swarm.
- 10:49I think it was a mating swarm.
- 10:51And it may very well be queenless
- 10:54But I picked it up.
- 10:56I didn't want it.
- 10:58Should I dare say this to the listeners?
- 11:01But I didn't want any more bees
- 11:02I'm just doing this for a good time.
- 11:04I didn't mean to work.
- 11:07Jason, you leave in a hive tool here.
- 11:09Minus five.
- 11:10So there's that
- 11:13Jason, I want to show you this and we we couldn't do it.
- 11:16We didn't even try.
- 11:18See that swarm up there, that small swarm
- 11:22No.
- 11:23See the limb that comes out with the dead ends on it?
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:26Then walk back down that limb and look at about a pound and a half of bees hanging there.
- 11:30Oh yeah.
- 11:31That was three or four pounds.
- 11:32And that's 18 to 20 feet up
- 11:36And I didn't even I didn't even I didn't try.
- 11:38I didn't know heroics on that one.
- 11:40Yeah.
- 11:42Jason, while we're here
- 11:44Let's look at it's one package.
- 11:46Yeah, that's fine.
- 11:49This this clearly.
- 11:50I don't have to do a thing in the world, listeners.
- 11:52This is a package I put in.
- 11:53One, two, three, four, five.
- 11:55They're on five frames already.
- 11:58So that's what I call a Gem2 inspection.
- 12:01That's enough.
- 12:04I'm gonna do one more
- 12:09and see what they look like just because it stuck down so well
- 12:19One, two, three, four and a half frames there.
- 12:22And they're stinging me.
- 12:24I got smoke going.
- 12:25Why am I not using it?
- 12:27I don't know
- 12:28I don't really want to harass these packages.
- 12:30I just want to believe they're okay.
- 12:33In a few another week or two, I will open them.
- 12:36If any of them are queenless, I just combine them.
- 12:39Jason, let's go out
- 12:41And look at one more small swarm, but I really can't explain.
- 12:48Listen, there's a small swarm showed up.
- 12:50I went over to look at a lily.
- 12:52And surprisingly, just above the lily was a small swarm.
- 12:57I hived it.
- 12:59It immediately left the colony and was gone for a day or two.
- 13:06I came back out
- 13:08And there was a swarm in the box again.
- 13:10And I don't know if it's the same swarm or if it's a different one.
- 13:16There's eggs in this one.
- 13:18One piece of comb and they are just barely hanging on.
- 13:22I need to feed them.
- 13:24I need to do a lot.
- 13:25But there's a queen in that one
- 13:27And it's about the size of a big softball.
- 13:31Oh wow.
- 13:33They were hanging right there, Jason.
- 13:35So what does it mean?
- 13:36When a swarm comes in here, a small one, had to be a mating swarm, did not stay in my box, and then two days later another swarm is there.
- 13:46Was that the same swarm that came back
- 13:49Or was that another mating swarm that was just attracted to the previous swarm location?
- 13:56I don't know.
- 13:58Listeners, I want to apologize.
- 14:01For spending so much time on this, but it really ener energized me.
- 14:08And I enjoyed doing it.
- 14:13Long runs.
- 14:14It was hard work.
- 14:17But it challenged me.
- 14:18It challenged Jason.
- 14:20Made me accept my age more.
- 14:24So I'm really happy to tell you that other than grass is too tall already, life in the bee yard is quiet and everything looks okay.
- 14:35I am trying to get my bee life back under control.
- 14:40I hope the swarming season is over.
- 14:43Jason, I've lost track of time.
- 14:46But I think we're done with this swarm thing.
- 14:49So let's make a vow that the next segment we do will not use the word swarm anywhere in the episode.
- 14:57Do you swear?
- 14:59I swear.
- 15:00Okay.
- 15:01Let's talk about antique hive tools.
- 15:03Yeah, let's talk about antique hive tools.
- 15:05Jason's a s is a blacksmith.
- 15:07And I'm on contracting to make me a hive tool you've never seen that was used to cut combs from the inside of box hives and skeps.
- 15:16I'll describe it to you later.
- 15:18But Jason has the expertise to do it.
- 15:20He just wants another $3,000 for that job.
- 15:24I'm running up a tab here.
- 15:26Listeners till next week.
- 15:28This is Jason telling you bye.
- 15:29Say bye, Jason.
- 15:30Bye, listeners.
- 15:31And this is Jim saying bye.
- 15:33We'll talk to you next week about antique hive tools or who knows what.
- 15:38Bye-bye.
- 15:40Is that a fire hazard to put that in there?
- 15:42I have to remember to come back and put it away
