- 0:07Network another hour to go for us. 2:00 we turn things over the
- 0:12drive Heather and Lucas until 5 overtime Iowa 5 to 6.
- 0:16Scott Dr. man from the athletic coming up in about 20 minutes or
- 0:19there's abouts right now. Matt Snyder joins us to start
- 0:23our week and our number 2 every single week.
- 0:26CBSSports.com is where you can read him.
- 0:28You can see his power rankings as he opines and writes on Major
- 0:31League Baseball and is a Hall of Fame voter Matt Trenton Ken,
- 0:35thanks for coming on as always appreciated.
- 0:38I want to start with maybe there was a lot of great baseball
- 0:40played, but but school bulls start was it Sunday?
- 0:44I think it was Sunday morning just got unbelievable through
- 0:47his final pitch of the game was 102 miles an hour.
- 0:50Just remarkable. I I did find it somewhat odd,
- 0:53though, that the the Twitter's going crazy about and he pitched
- 0:56a complete game. Look up Bob Gibson.
- 0:59Look up Bob Gibson if you have some free time for those folks
- 1:02out there that think that this you never happened before.
- 1:06Anyways, it's today's it's today's game and Scooble is on a
- 1:10is a high level as there possibly can be.
- 1:13What a start. Absolutely.
- 1:15Yeah, He he's the best pitcher in the world.
- 1:17And for a while it was always, we had like future Hall of
- 1:20Farmers in discussion. It was, hey, is it Clay Kershaw,
- 1:23Maxers or Zach Grankey? And there are some years, Justin
- 1:27Berliner obviously in there for a lot of years, but I don't
- 1:30think that there's any question right now because the school
- 1:33came back from that major surgery 20/23.
- 1:36He had 15 starts. He was unbelievable in those
- 1:38fifteen starts. And then last year it was, can
- 1:40he do it full full year? He did it for a full year.
- 1:42This year it was how will his arm respond that he went all the
- 1:46way up to 192 innings from only 80 the previous year.
- 1:48And I think we're seeing the answer right now is that he's
- 1:51locked and loaded as the best starter in baseball for the
- 1:54foreseeable future as long as he doesn't go.
- 1:56And hopefully he doesn't. Maybe Paul Schemes jumps up with
- 2:00him in that mix here within the next few months or even the next
- 2:04year. But feels like Schemes might
- 2:06need a little more help from his teammates and he's just not
- 2:08getting that. And yeah, Google on top of the
- 2:11game. It was his first career complete
- 2:13game. I'm with you on wanting the
- 2:18starting pitchers to be more of a main character and I'm sure
- 2:21we've discussed this before. We talk every week.
- 2:24One of the reasons I love Sandy Alcantra so much, In his die
- 2:27young year he had like 7 complete games and nobody else
- 2:29had more than three. And I asked him about it, the
- 2:32All Star game, and he said I view it as my job to complete
- 2:34the game. And that's kind of old school
- 2:37starter mentality. Looks like potentially another
- 2:40Cy Young coming down the level for school after what he was
- 2:43able to do. Hey, I had a award race question
- 2:46for you and Aaron Judge speaking the American League.
- 2:49I mean, run away the gap between him and everybody else.
- 2:51But Bobby Witt's always in the conversation what he does just
- 2:55all around what if he does with that bat with just not a very
- 2:58deep Royals lineup. Could you make the argument
- 3:00right now, though? Second behind Judge in the MVP
- 3:02race should be Cal Rally. What he's doing in terms of not
- 3:06just power, which is elite, but also catching.
- 3:09This guy was a Gold Glover a year ago and I'm going to guess
- 3:12he hasn't regressed a ton there back behind the plate.
- 3:14Cal Rally should he be second in our MVP balloting right now?
- 3:18Yeah, I think that's a good. I mean, I hadn't thought much
- 3:21beyond first place, which is like we're going to need
- 3:25something historic to derail judge here, whether it's
- 3:28unfortunately a long term injury or he hits 100 for like 3 months
- 3:33or something. Just that doesn't even seem
- 3:35possible. But yeah, I mean, it's look, the
- 3:38Royals are in fourth place right now.
- 3:40They're 16. The mayors are in first.
- 3:41That always help. The thing about the Mariners is
- 3:44you always expect them to pitch well, but their offense has
- 3:47actually been really, really, really good as long as you
- 3:49adjust it for ballpark. And Raleigh, their best sitter
- 3:52by by far. I mean, seventeen home runs.
- 3:54No one else in the team has more than 10.
- 3:56So 372 on base percentage for a catcher.
- 3:59Get out of here. That's amazing defensive
- 4:02metrics. He's he's in the positive
- 4:04everywhere. So to play that demanding of a
- 4:07position and to rate that highly offensively, yeah, I mean, you
- 4:13got to say that's that's a good starting point.
- 4:16I was just pulling up the AL war leaders right here.
- 4:19Just it's always. By no means am I saying that's
- 4:21the only thing that matters, but it's an easy way to just look at
- 4:23the screenshot. Judge first by an absolute mile.
- 4:26Bregman and 2nd but. He's he's on the injured.
- 4:30List and the Red Sox have been disappointing.
- 4:33And then you've got Cal Raleigh right there with Bobby Witt
- 4:35Junior. So yeah, I think Raleigh, I
- 4:38think you nailed it. Since since the roles are part
- 4:42of the conversation, this Jack Caglione story is that he say
- 4:45his name. Caglione.
- 4:46Caglione. He's worked his way up.
- 4:49Yeah, I'm not either. Sorry.
- 4:51Well, we'll know soon, though, I think.
- 4:53And I wonder what are they kind of doing?
- 4:56Are they slowing his is clock down, kind of like what the Cubs
- 5:00did to Chris Bryant? I mean, he's been, he's fast
- 5:02tracked. He's now in AAA.
- 5:03He's played, he's played four games.
- 5:05He's hit five home runs. He did the same at AA.
- 5:08The Royals are last. At least they were going into
- 5:11the weekend as far as home runs in Major League Baseball.
- 5:14This guy's got a thunderous bat. Is it too early or should Royals
- 5:19fans be starting to ask themselves, you know, what are
- 5:21we waiting for? When's he going to get here?
- 5:24Yeah, I think when you go to the trouble to send a guy to a level
- 5:27that six games is just too quick to say, oh, Yep, yeah, you're
- 5:31under promotion there. By the same token, if he was
- 5:34owed for those six games, you want to send them back down to
- 5:37AA. So I think maybe a little bit
- 5:39more time in Omaha, I would be. Look, it's difficult to know
- 5:43here because the Royals are traditionally a team that
- 5:46doesn't spend that much money, but under new ownership and
- 5:49under this new front office, they went out and remember, they
- 5:52were 56 and one O 6 two years ago, but they still went out and
- 5:55spent money in the offseason. Then they made the playoffs last
- 5:57year, they locked up Bobby Witt Junior.
- 6:00I don't think just because of money right now when we're
- 6:03staring down the barrel of June with them being six games out
- 6:07and in fourth place, wanting to win that AL Central, wanting to
- 6:10get to the playoffs, I don't think that they would hold a guy
- 6:13down just for a few bucks, relatively speaking.
- 6:16So I think it's probably let's let's let's let them have three
- 6:22weeks or so in Omaha. And if he's still killing the
- 6:24ball like that, then they'll bring him up.
- 6:27I want to be surprised just before the All Star break at
- 6:29this rate. Question for you in the American
- 6:32League East, you know, year after year, best division in
- 6:34baseball, the power, the amount of the spent, the one team that
- 6:37doesn't spend the raise do it as well as everybody.
- 6:40Well, yeah, the Yankees are winning, but outside of that
- 6:42garbage, it's a bad division. What's going on?
- 6:46Yeah. Is there anything that you can
- 6:47point to, Matt, at, any reasoning behind it?
- 6:50Is it, you know, kind of what we have now with this structure,
- 6:52with the luxury tax, Could that be a piece of it?
- 6:54Why is the American League he seemingly taken a big step back
- 6:57the last couple years? I think it's just a coincidence
- 7:00right now this year, just looking at like the Rays
- 7:04especially, look, they were at a transition anyway last year when
- 7:07they traded a Rose Arena and Paradis and it was kind of like
- 7:11a reload period. But then they deal with losing
- 7:14their ballpark and they're playing their home games in
- 7:17George Severn Field in Tampa. But they got completely the
- 7:19schedules. Really, if you go look at the
- 7:21schedule, they completely overloaded them with home games
- 7:25early in the season because in July and August it's going to be
- 7:28so sweltering. They're on the road almost 12
- 7:31July and August, so they're playing this unfamiliar ballpark
- 7:34and they're playing almost every day there.
- 7:36It's hard to judge what happened with them.
- 7:38The Blue Jays, I think they just kind of looked like a mediocre
- 7:41roster anyway. And the Red Sox are
- 7:44disappointing. But surely the Red Sox are
- 7:47disappointing. I thought they were going to be
- 7:48better than this. They just don't have
- 7:49consistency. The rotation, it's only Crochet
- 7:52who's been consistent. Walker Walker Bueller, not
- 7:56Walker. Walker Bueller is starting to
- 7:58put things together there, but still just not that consistent
- 8:01in the rotation. Bregman endeavors need help
- 8:03offensively, especially from Duron.
- 8:05And now Bregman's hurt. And as you saw what happened
- 8:08yesterday, Dever's draws three walks because Bregman's not
- 8:10there. Then, of course, the Orioles are
- 8:13the most disappointing team in baseball.
- 8:15They didn't address the pitching staff enough in the offseason,
- 8:18as we all know. But then everything with the
- 8:20offense, they were. They were fourth in OPS last
- 8:23year, their 20th this year. They were fourth in runs scored
- 8:25last year, their 25th this year. Everything is falling apart with
- 8:29Baltimore, so I feel like it's just a bunch of different stuff
- 8:33all over the place instead of one thing.
- 8:36Fairpoint, I want to talk about the Phillies, who have the best
- 8:39record in the National League. As we sit here today, they're in
- 8:42a very difficult division. I think the Braves with Acuna
- 8:45doing what he's doing, the Mets seemingly aren't going to go
- 8:49anywhere at this point. The Phillies are in for a
- 8:52dogfight. It's going to be tough to
- 8:53maintain their spot up there, but right now that's where they
- 8:56sit. Is that sustainable?
- 8:59I think so, yeah. I mean, they're going to they're
- 9:01going to go through stretches where where they look a little
- 9:03like not very good for a quick stretcher.
- 9:06Remember, they started 6:00 and 1:00 and then they had a down
- 9:09stretch and they went into. By the time they lost their
- 9:11Friday game to the Cubs, they were only 1313.
- 9:13But they've been gangbusters ever since then.
- 9:16Best team in baseball since then, they've been amazing.
- 9:19I think they'll go continue to go through ebbs and flows.
- 9:21I mean, they had Jordan Romano at the start of the year was
- 9:23terrible. Now he looks like he's their
- 9:26closer, especially because Jose Alvarado got popped for PED than
- 9:29they're going to need what Strom and Kirkering is the bridge
- 9:34there to the closer. They're probably going to have
- 9:35to get somebody in front of the trade deadline.
- 9:37But if you look at it's not like they've had everything go
- 9:41perfectly for them to this point.
- 9:42Offensively, the only one who's really been great so far is
- 9:46Schwarber. Like Bryce Harper's been good,
- 9:49Trey Turner's been good, but they could be better than this
- 9:51and nobody else is really over performing at all.
- 9:54And if you look at the rotation, Wheeler's just doing Zach
- 9:56Wheeler things. Lizardo's been great, but maybe
- 9:59that's just being freed from Miami.
- 10:02Sanchez has been fine. Nola was actually awful, and now
- 10:05he's on the injured list. And Ranger Suarez started the
- 10:07year on the injured list. He's only had four starts.
- 10:09So there are areas where you could say, oh, maybe there's
- 10:13some regression from Lizardo. Maybe Schwarber won't continue
- 10:15to hit home runs at this pace. Although I would argue a little
- 10:18bit on the second point, But elsewhere on the roster, it's
- 10:22not like they've had everything break perfectly.
- 10:24So yeah, I think they're going to be this good all year.
- 10:27As we hit this checkpoint, a team that all three of us of us
- 10:29like coming into the earth, the Texas Rangers can't hit, haven't
- 10:33been able to hit degrom yesterday, doesn't get a
- 10:36strikeout for the first time in his career, I.
- 10:38Didn't know that really. You get swept by the Yankees,
- 10:41you lose 2 out of three to the White Sox yesterday, lose to the
- 10:44Blue Jays 2 to one. Did we just miss on this team?
- 10:47Is it time to, if we got any stock left, start, start selling
- 10:50it off right now in the Texas Rangers?
- 10:53Yes, I'm ready for a while. For a while earlier in the
- 10:58season, I kept just saying let's wait, let's wait, let's wait.
- 11:01But at this point, figure is is on the ender list again.
- 11:06That happens far too often, especially now that he's up in
- 11:08his 30s Marcus Simeon is 34 and looks completely broken and
- 11:12lost. And that makes you worried that
- 11:14he's completely cooked Adolis Garcia We just went through this
- 11:17last year. And so it when it's getting
- 11:21close to a year and a third of being in a slump, that's not a
- 11:24slump anymore. That's just who you are.
- 11:25John Peterson's awful right now. Burger's been in the minors.
- 11:30Yeah, it's just I thought there were going to be bounce backs
- 11:34offensively. Wyatt Langford's good, but he's
- 11:36not great. Evan Carter, they had to leave
- 11:39in the minors for a while. Now he's up.
- 11:41He had a little short spurt, but now he's bad again.
- 11:44There's just so many areas where things have gone wrong
- 11:45offensively and as good of work as they've gotten from Ivaldi
- 11:49and degrom and Molly, and they should be much better.
- 11:54Yes. Like the rotation was one of
- 11:56their biggest question marks heading into the year as well as
- 11:59they've pitched in the rotation. Then you see the three games
- 12:01under 500. Oh, it's because the offense is
- 12:03brutal. Yeah, I I'm selling everything
- 12:06right now. We're past Memorial Day.
- 12:08I know Ken always like, especially to talk about past
- 12:11Memorial Day, that kind of attempt.
- 12:14I'm pretty much done what's on at this point so.
- 12:16They got something out of Patrick Corbin this year so far.
- 12:19That's a good point. Yeah.
- 12:20Corbin's actually 3.7589 start. Like, I mean, come on, that's
- 12:24just not scoring. That's Trent's free square when
- 12:27he pitches every fifth day. But again, this year, so is
- 12:30Seattle the team to beat out there?
- 12:32Matt, are you buying the Mariners?
- 12:33I think so. Yeah, I think so because like,
- 12:36I'm not obviously OK, the the A's really fell apart after they
- 12:40got everybody's hopes up there. And again, the Vagabond
- 12:43situation like the the razor and it's tough to just not really
- 12:47have a home. The Angels, obviously I'd be a
- 12:50fool to buy in them. And I just said I'm out of the
- 12:53range or still we're left with the Astros and the Bears.
- 12:56Wouldn't be surprised to see the Astros get back, but I feel like
- 13:00it's a changing of the guard year.
- 13:02The Astros just, they seem a little more, although they're
- 13:04hot right now, but they still seem a little more mediocre than
- 13:07good. So hey, don't choke this one
- 13:10away again, Mariners. This one looks like it might be
- 13:12real. Because the offense.
- 13:14Is actually good. The offense is actually good.
- 13:18Cubs playing really well. You mentioned, you know, I think
- 13:22this just backs up the point on Caglione to leave him down
- 13:25there. I mean, Matt Snot was left, Matt
- 13:27Shaw was left down here. Look how that's turned out.
- 13:30Since he's been back, he has been unbelievable both
- 13:32defensively and with the bat in his hand.
- 13:34So the Cubs obviously need starting pitching.
- 13:37We're starting to get to that. You know, we're past Memorial
- 13:39Day, we're moving the All Star break, July, end of July,
- 13:42etcetera will be coming. I'm hearing some from from
- 13:45Toronto people that Gossman might be on the block.
- 13:49Wouldn't that make sense for the Cubs?
- 13:51I think he's got this year and one more left on his contract.
- 13:54It's not crazy the the the amount of money that he's owed.
- 13:59Should that be the type of pitcher that the Cubs should be
- 14:02targeting? That I I would be down with
- 14:05that, yeah, for sure. The other thing I I where I had
- 14:08my sights were the Cubs really seem into this lefty, the lefty
- 14:14pitcher thing in Wrigley Field. Because there's something with
- 14:16the split where since they put in the new video board and the
- 14:19scoreboard and the way those the wind patterns and the weather
- 14:21patterns go, that it's much better to have lefty starters
- 14:25than righties, which is why they went so hard after Imanaga.
- 14:28It's why they targeted Matthew Boyd in the offseason.
- 14:31Steel went down. So that's where I looked at.
- 14:34I believe it was the last week on the show.
- 14:35I mentioned Tyler Anderson of the Angel lefty last year of his
- 14:38contract. If the Marlins make Ryan
- 14:40Weathers available, he's under team control for few more years.
- 14:44That would make sense as well. But if you're looking for a guy
- 14:47who's been an ace before, who's a writer, who's been through the
- 14:50battles, absolutely, Gosselin would be a great fit on that
- 14:52team. They're going to have to do
- 14:55something because Ben Brown right now just doesn't look like
- 14:58he's going to work in the rotation.
- 15:00And you don't know how long Colin Ray's going to hold on.
- 15:02You don't know how long they want to go with Kate Horton, so.
- 15:05When even when the. Imanaga comes back, let's say in
- 15:09another month. You're talking about Imanaga boy
- 15:12Tyone, and then, well, who's it going to be from there?
- 15:15If it's Colin Ray, that's great, but you still need one more
- 15:18spot. And I don't know if they want
- 15:19Kate Horton to stay there for the rest of the year.
- 15:21And again, Brown's becoming a problem, so they're going to
- 15:24have to do something. We've talked so much about PCA,
- 15:28talked about, you know, Kyle Tucker, what it's going to take
- 15:30to re sign him. What about the bullpen?
- 15:32Palencia has come in, taken over that closer role.
- 15:34He's been out staying. We know he's got the velocity.
- 15:36That's not a problem. It's the control with him.
- 15:39Stocks, even Porter Hodge, Daniel Palencia.
- 15:43Not who becomes the better pitcher, who becomes the better
- 15:46closer throughout the rest of their career.
- 15:48Out of those two guys, who you taking?
- 15:50Gosh, who knows, man, there's just look, relievers are still
- 15:53volatile. It can change year to year and
- 15:56it is nice to see, even though Palencia, like it looks like
- 16:00right when the Cubs anointed him the closer he blew that game
- 16:03against the Marlin. But man, you could kind of argue
- 16:06that Tucker probably should have caught that ball in right field
- 16:08and then talking about Valencia being perfect and save
- 16:12conversions. But he looked, you know, he's
- 16:14gotten the last couple. He he seems like he's the type
- 16:18of guy who could do it because he just pumps 102 up there and
- 16:21he has an off speed pitch he can command.
- 16:24But it's nice to bring that righty out pumping 102.
- 16:27It's interesting how things, like I said, relievers are so
- 16:30volatile. We talked about this already,
- 16:33right, how it said Palencia Pomerans, Caleb Theobar, Brad
- 16:38Keller, though, that's going to be your circle of trust for some
- 16:40right there. Who would have thought that
- 16:41heading into the air, like heading into last year, Albert
- 16:45Edward Asley was the closer. So things can change so quickly.
- 16:49It looks like they're still trying to work Ryan Presley
- 16:52back. We'll see on the the Porter
- 16:54Hodge injury. Barry Weathers probably pitched
- 16:56his way out of there flexing. Flexing's actually been giving
- 17:00him good garbage time innings, so maybe he'll work his way in
- 17:04at some point. I assume they'll trade for
- 17:06somebody. I don't know if it'll be
- 17:08somebody expensive that's like a top notch closer or if they'll
- 17:11get to the point where they're comfortable just leaving
- 17:14Palencia there. We'll see, but I assume they'll
- 17:16trade for somebody with depth. Ideally.
- 17:20Pie in the sky is probably do it with the starting pitcher.
- 17:24So if it's a Gossman type, you grab a Blue Jays reliever.
- 17:27If it's Tyler Anderson, you grab an Angel reliever.
- 17:29Something like that. Yeah, Palmer has been
- 17:31unbelievable. They got him for what?
- 17:32A song, right? I mean, Seattle gave him away.
- 17:36Unbelievable. Matt Snyder, Great stuff as
- 17:38always, brother. We'll talk to you in six days,
- 17:40Monday at the to kick off our second hour.
- 17:43Thanks for what you you do for us Matt Snyder.
- 17:44Appreciate it. See you buddy.
- 17:46Good to talk to you Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com as we talk a
- 17:50little MLB Cubs are fun team. Yes, they are.
- 17:52They really are. They're an incredibly exciting
- 17:54team to. Watch their offense.
- 17:56They swipe bags. PCA's worth the price of
- 17:59admission. They can blow up at any time.
- 18:01Yeah, that adds to the entertainment value.
- 18:03What and and what night did they a long weekend.
- 18:06He watched so many. They came from way back again.
- 18:09Cincinnati. I don't know that's.
- 18:11Saturday or Friday? One night was yeah, was on the
- 18:13weekend. Anyway, Niko Horners yet to hit
- 18:15a home run. I don't know why they want to
- 18:17run this dude out of town. He has a Gold Glover.
- 18:20He's great defensively and he's good, good with the badness.
- 18:23Was not there yet, but this year anyways.
- 18:26Well, take your time out. Scott Dockerman is going to join
- 18:28us next. More on the impending.
- 18:30Where are we going with college sports?
- 18:32Seems like we're on the cusp of some movement.
- 18:36Doc will help us out on that. We'll go over his fun little
- 18:39article as he predict the first three weeks of the TV schedule.
- 18:42That's next. Miller and Condon take you until
- 18:452 on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 18:50Mary Condon, welcome back just before 1:30 on a Tuesday.
- 18:54We're with you until 2. Trent's plays of the day, Circus
- 18:57sports downtown Las Vegas they sponsor or here in the state of
- 19:01Iowa on the app. If you're listening on in
- 19:03Illinois, Likewise, download circus sports Illinois app.
- 19:07Trent's plays of the day coming up here in 20 minutes.
- 19:10Scott Doctorman writes for The Athletic are the interesting
- 19:12piece out today on his forecast for the first three weeks as to
- 19:16the television partners for these prospective games coming
- 19:20up with these games, schedule games coming up.
- 19:21We'll get to that in just a second.
- 19:23Doc Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 19:25Appreciate it. How are you?
- 19:26How was your weekend? Yeah, it was a busy weekend, saw
- 19:29a lot of family. My son's heading to Germany in a
- 19:32couple weeks, so we had a party for him.
- 19:34So now I just need a vacation for my vacation.
- 19:37Or at least three days vacation, anyway.
- 19:39Good stuff. Well, I'll get to your piece in
- 19:41a second where I want to start with you Doc.
- 19:44It seems like these SEC meetings taking place in Florida are
- 19:50positive or negative, depending on what side of the argument
- 19:53you're going to be on are are going to move the needle.
- 19:56These seem like they're impactful meetings.
- 19:57Sankey is kind of, I don't know, throwing down the gauntlet, but
- 20:01he's making it very clear who the power brokers are.
- 20:04Not that we didn't need to reminded that it's the SEC and
- 20:07the Big 10, but it seems like this might be our summer topic.
- 20:11Scott Dockerman What lies ahead in college athletics?
- 20:16For sure. And I think once the house
- 20:18settlement goes through and it could be today, it could be
- 20:20tomorrow, sometime this week, better be anyway pretty soon,
- 20:24but that it's going to be on to the next stage, which is, you
- 20:27know, what happens with the College Football Playoff in 2026
- 20:30and beyond. And, and I think it's a foregone
- 20:32conclusion that they're going to go to 16.
- 20:34That was something that we kind of been hearing in the fall when
- 20:37the, the, the discussion was to 14.
- 20:39And then there are a couple of 80s saying, well, if we're going
- 20:41to go to 14, let's just pull the Band-Aid off, go to 16.
- 20:44But along with that is been the push mostly from the Big 10
- 20:49about adding, you know, 4 automatic bids from the Big 10
- 20:55and SEC and then two from the Big 12 and ACC and then kind of
- 20:59down the line. And that's, that's going to be
- 21:02the the biggest topic and of discussion.
- 21:05And it's going to be how much can the ACC and Big 12 get?
- 21:11Because they're really not in a position of strength.
- 21:13And then it's going to be how much can they the Big 12 or Big
- 21:1710 and the SEC weather without looking completely overbearing
- 21:21on this. So it's, it's going to be, yeah,
- 21:24it's going to be a topic for a long time.
- 21:26It felt like Sankey just kind of reached a tipping point.
- 21:28And I think it was a question, I think it was Ralph Russo that
- 21:31asked the question of the AP and he just, he let it fly.
- 21:34He talked about the sanctity of the game and the betterment of
- 21:38the game and those kind of things.
- 21:39And the SEC says, yes, they wanted to survive.
- 21:43My question for you is, is there any recourse?
- 21:45Is there anything that the Big 12 and the ACC specifically,
- 21:49anything at all that they could do or do?
- 21:50They just got to sit in the corner, take their two bids and
- 21:52shut up. Oh, I think there's somewhere in
- 21:56the middle there, Trent. And by the way, we're blessed to
- 21:58have. Rob Yeah, you got Russo now?
- 22:01So, you know, once Nicole left, so, but I'll say this.
- 22:05But yeah, I think there's some things that they can do to kind
- 22:07of push this thing along. I I mean, when you look at, you
- 22:12know, if, if they have 16 teams, which is way it's going, if, if
- 22:15the Big 10 and Big 12 or big 10 and SEC can convince them each
- 22:19day that we're going to have 4 automatic qualifiers.
- 22:21If I'm the ACC in the Big 12, you kind of have to start
- 22:25working together on this. And I think one thing that they
- 22:28can do, I mean, they're not going to get a, but you know, if
- 22:31there could be a, a combination of can we get 5 and meaning
- 22:36guaranteed 2 for each of the leagues.
- 22:39And then like say the next highest ACC or Big 12 team
- 22:43automatically gets in, then you, you then you've got a little bit
- 22:47of leverage to you. You can actually, you know that
- 22:50that may mean you have somebody who's 18, but they still get in
- 22:54versus somebody who's 18th and won't get in if it's they're
- 22:57behind, you know, straight up at largest.
- 22:59So I think that's probably one thing to do, but the the plan to
- 23:05have like a first round and and buys with 16 teams, I just I'm
- 23:09not sure if I kind of get that. I think that's a little bit
- 23:13crazy to add another round of tournament play.
- 23:16I just don't know if that's the rational part of this.
- 23:20But the other thing that I think is probably more radical for the
- 23:23ACC and Big 12 is to maybe incorporate some sort of a
- 23:27working relationship, an association, if you will, of
- 23:31regular season football that to kind of then be able to get into
- 23:35over 5 teams as out of one association.
- 23:38But that's probably down the road a few years.
- 23:41Yes, that hopefully it's got more teeth than what would what
- 23:43do we have a few years ago? The alliance with the alliance,
- 23:47yes. There's no contract.
- 23:51Then you don't have an alliance anyways.
- 23:54So what when will or have the Big 10 already had these
- 23:57meetings? Will we hear from Petiti next?
- 23:59Does he follow the Big 10 meetings?
- 24:01Follow anytime soon, Doc? They had their meetings a week
- 24:06ago in California, but they are different altogether than the
- 24:10other leagues. And that that they are very they
- 24:12keep themselves very quiet. They don't want to discuss
- 24:15anything. Tony is is Tony operates almost
- 24:19exclusively behind the scenes and that's his preference.
- 24:21He just doesn't want to have a lot of, you know, like Sankey,
- 24:25even when they've had the kind of their SEC big big 10 divide
- 24:29the world summits that they've, you know, thank you.
- 24:32He's been the one talking most of the time, whereas Patiti is a
- 24:35little more direct. And here's a couple of things.
- 24:37And, and so it kind of speaks to their personalities a little bit
- 24:41more. And, and, you know, when you
- 24:43talk to the people in the big 10, they speak very highly of,
- 24:45of Tony Patiti. Mm hmm.
- 24:47They like him. They like the way he operates
- 24:49and, and he is personable. He just doesn't, you know, maybe
- 24:52it's all of his years as being a, a network executive.
- 24:55He just doesn't want to be out front all the time.
- 24:57And and hopefully we can, you know, I, I put my bid in there
- 25:01to say, hey, if he wants to talk, I'm here anytime.
- 25:04Actually had that conversation about two hours ago.
- 25:07So we'll see if it Nets anything.
- 25:10I hope so because he does need to have his voice out there
- 25:13because they are very powerful institution.
- 25:16Doc, you put out your latest article predicting what we're
- 25:20going to see television wise for the first three weeks of the
- 25:22season, and I'm sure I'm not alone here in the state of Iowa.
- 25:25First thing I look. Forward to where did I scroll?
- 25:27Right away. Week 2, Iowa, Iowa State, you
- 25:30have that one ticketed 3:00 central kickoff on Fox.
- 25:33How good do you feel about that prediction?
- 25:37I feel really good now I'm the time may change a little bit
- 25:40here, you know, but I, I am, I feel pretty confident that
- 25:44they'll be on Fox because when you look at the at the schedule
- 25:47that day, the Big 10, yeah, Big 10 is hurting when it comes to
- 25:53home games in that middle week. I wrote a little bit about it
- 25:55when you got your best games or at the other team, you know, TV
- 26:01contracts, you know, Illinois at Duke and you've got, you know,
- 26:04Iowa and Iowa State and and a couple others like that.
- 26:07It's just, it's really hard for them.
- 26:08But but you know, the Big 12 has a as a deal with box.
- 26:11I think that's probably more than likely going to happen.
- 26:14So, you know, it now could be a little later, a little earlier,
- 26:18you know, but I, I would within like 1/2 an hour of it.
- 26:21But I I'm pretty confident that that's where it's going to end
- 26:23up. But no chance it'll be the big
- 26:25Noon kickoff, right? No, it can't be.
- 26:28It can't be Big 10, so that has to be at a Big 10 venue.
- 26:31So that's why Penn State, I mean, Florida International,
- 26:34Penn State. But now I understand why you've
- 26:36got that one there. I did not realize.
- 26:38Yeah, that makes some sense. You know what, I the more I look
- 26:41at week #2 kind of feels like a #2 right?
- 26:45In a lot of ways. It's not the best week, Doc.
- 26:48I mean, Michigan, Oklahoma, I'll give you that one.
- 26:50That is the five star game of the week.
- 26:52Kansas, Missouri, maybe he's got a chance.
- 26:55Iowa Iowa State's on any list as far as the best games that week.
- 27:00Yeah, I think, yeah, Kansas, Missouri, obviously Michigan,
- 27:04Oklahoma, but I mean, I, I, I feel reasonably sure that Fox
- 27:08will probably end up with big noon kickoffs in, in Ames that
- 27:12day, so. I mean I.
- 27:16Yeah, but you know, they just won't have the big noon game
- 27:18because they're not going to go to Happy Valley.
- 27:21But but I think that they'll they'll probably set up shop in
- 27:24Ames for for that day. And, you know, so it'll be what
- 27:28the would that make it the third time in the last four trips?
- 27:34I think so. Yeah, that, that there'd be some
- 27:36sort of pregame show. I, I think that's probably going
- 27:39to happen. I mean, I'm not going to say
- 27:40100%, but I want to say it's a high 90 percentage possibility.
- 27:45I I think that's probably what about?
- 27:47Ashton Kushner, was that the the the weather delay game that he
- 27:51was the guest picker? Was that the one?
- 27:54You. You were.
- 27:55In the press box doc I used to probably.
- 27:57I was there early, you know, because that was way because
- 28:00those games like the the big or the game day was there, you
- 28:05know, until like at 11 and then the game didn't kick off till
- 28:08mid afternoon. So I was one of them.
- 28:10I can't remember right. You know, I try to read when I
- 28:12can't, but so there was like 15,000 people there.
- 28:17I think it was the day of the big rainstorm that prolonged
- 28:22Seihawk and almost forced Seihawk to go into November a
- 28:26few months later. Doc, earlier today, Iowa State
- 28:29put out a release couple of new names that had been a couple
- 28:32guys that we do had been committed and we're going to be
- 28:33moving on out of the transfer portal and then a couple of new
- 28:36names that were in there. I would now with the potential
- 28:40flexible roster, do you anticipate they're going to do
- 28:43anything? And it might be the look guys
- 28:45that are down the depth chart, maybe guys that didn't find
- 28:47homes in the portal that were there that are walk on types.
- 28:50But with this roster limit potentially one O 5, but it
- 28:54could be expanded. Anything at all that you
- 28:56anticipate I was going to be doing here this offseason?
- 28:58Well, I've already picked up a couple of players that I you
- 29:01know, I don't know that they would have had the ability to do
- 29:04so or I mean, they were they would have been really tight.
- 29:06I mean they're over one O 5 now. I and so now they they have that
- 29:10chance to to pick up. I would I wouldn't be surprised
- 29:14if they grabbed a couple of extra lineman.
- 29:16You kind of need them just for practice purposes.
- 29:19I mean, they only have to walk on lineman counting George, what
- 29:23Nahas, you know, would come from Iowa State to Iowa and Kale
- 29:27Winter, who's probably good enough to be a scholarship guy
- 29:30at a lot of schools. So they they usually thrive on
- 29:33that. They usually need several.
- 29:34And then when you lose a guy like Joey Van Wetzinger, who
- 29:38transfers out even before spring practice ends, they could they
- 29:41could use a couple of guys just for the scout line.
- 29:45So it wouldn't surprise me at all if they're able to to go out
- 29:48and do that, take a flyer on somebody while they can.
- 29:50Iowa is kind of penalized for doing everything the right way
- 29:55when it came to this because, yeah, there's going to be some
- 29:57grandfathering in, but they, you know, they, they don't have to
- 30:01say how they were going to grandfather them in.
- 30:03They don't have to justify it. They just do it.
- 30:05And and so I would anticipate, yeah, I mean, they might pick up
- 30:07a couple more. I don't know if they'll get too
- 30:09heavy, but, you know, now they have what, three walk on
- 30:12defensive lineman and and they should probably have a few more.
- 30:15I think ultimately Doc is is college.
- 30:17Football Playoff moving closer towards February or closer back
- 30:22to January 1st as far as the end date.
- 30:25I think it's staying pretty much where it is.
- 30:28It's just a matter of how they want to, what they want to do.
- 30:32If they want to add another round.
- 30:34You know, like we're saying that if they had four new playoff
- 30:37spots and then you're going to have what, 9 playing 16 and and
- 30:4210 playing 15 and then the winners of that play the next
- 30:46round and then there's still another pie.
- 30:48It's very complicated. I don't see that coming.
- 30:50But but I think what may make sense is to to move the playoffs
- 30:55to a position, position up maybe a week from where it was last
- 30:59year and play it like right after the championship round.
- 31:02So then you can stay away from the NFL.
- 31:05That's been the real hard thing. So yeah, they're talking about
- 31:07moving into like a first round to Army Navy weekend.
- 31:11And maybe that's the case because I kind of think it got
- 31:13too late last year and I think it's going to be too late this
- 31:16year. I think they need to move that
- 31:18more into the second ish week of January and kind of end it
- 31:24because this shirt got a little cliche even though you had two
- 31:27massive blue bloods in there, but still I I think that's
- 31:30probably the route that they'll go so they won't go any later
- 31:33the. 16 team bracket that I think we all feel we're going to
- 31:36get here very, very quickly. Is this a good thing for Iowa or
- 31:41is the system where it was 12 or even 4, was that better for the
- 31:45Iowa Hawkeye football program, the Hawkeyes alone, this new era
- 31:49that we're embarking upon? Great question, Trent.
- 31:52I would say I look at it this way, that the best route for
- 31:57Iowa to win a national title, which you know it's not gonna
- 32:00happen, but had had a chance to happen, was the BCS with two
- 32:05teams. If they could have gotten in
- 32:07there in O2 or O91 game, winner take all, that would have been
- 32:12their best bet. The deeper it.
- 32:14Goes in the. Playoff, the less chance they're
- 32:16going to have because they just don't have the depth and the,
- 32:18and the overall talent to weather that three or four
- 32:21playoff, you know, game run. However, when you're looking at
- 32:24it from Iowa or Iowa State's perspective for that matter, is
- 32:28get into the tournament and maybe win a game or two and then
- 32:30you have one of the most memorable seasons in school
- 32:32history. And, and I think the 16 team is,
- 32:34is probably better for them four playoff spots is, is better for
- 32:39for Iowa, because I talked to Brett Bielema about this a few
- 32:43months ago and, and he loves it from the idea of we talked about
- 32:47the old Big 10 W and forget that they didn't win in Indianapolis,
- 32:53but it but that that division play allowed teams to feel like
- 32:59they had a chance to for meaningful football in November.
- 33:03And you got all the way to, you know, you're a game behind with
- 33:06two weeks to go. You're still playing for
- 33:08something. But now when you're an 18 team
- 33:11league and you've got these blue bloods and you're all in the
- 33:13same division, it's hard to think, well, you know, we're,
- 33:17we're two games behind. We just have no chance.
- 33:19Then what do you what do you playing for to go to the Outback
- 33:22Bowl? You know that.
- 33:23So I think this is helpful. But if if you have something to
- 33:26shoot for, like last year, they would have been six, they would
- 33:28have played the playing game against Indiana.
- 33:32And so that's something to shoot for.
- 33:34And if they can get to that position in the future, I think
- 33:36that would be that'd be great for the program.
- 33:38And if you think about it, if they host a game in early
- 33:41December against somebody else in the Big 10 with the right to
- 33:44go to the playoffs, that is, that's going to be one or more
- 33:48memorable games. We'll see in in Iowa.
- 33:51Doc, I know college. Football is your primary beat,
- 33:53but you did cover Caitlin Clark periodically, including when she
- 33:56was here in May Obviously she's obviously tickets have fallen
- 33:5943% secondary market since the news of her being gone from the
- 34:04league for a couple of weeks. So while she heals from her
- 34:06injury, is there a way that CBS can get out of next Saturday?
- 34:10Not this coming because they were scheduled to be big CBS
- 34:14prime time 7:00 at night against the sky.
- 34:16Boy, if they could put that on CBS Sports net, I'm guessing
- 34:19they would in a heart beat to get this off national TV because
- 34:23I think it's going to be embarrassing when people realize
- 34:25just how impactful she is. I, you know, that's a great
- 34:30question. I, I don't know the answer to
- 34:31that. I would say, you know, this is
- 34:34this to me comes down to if you're following the WNBA and
- 34:39you don't like the Caitlin Clark phenomenon and you're, you know,
- 34:42think that everybody else is equal to her in whatever way,
- 34:46you know, if this shows it, it is that she tips.
- 34:49She's the straw that stirs the drink.
- 34:51And when you see ticket prices falling, you're going to see TV
- 34:54ratings fall for the fever. And and they're an entertaining
- 34:57team, no doubt, and other players who are very
- 34:59entertaining too. But she's the superstar and you
- 35:02just have to get used to that. And and so being out two weeks,
- 35:05a game like like that, which I'm sure CBS was really excited for,
- 35:09I think it just shows you it just shows you what what she
- 35:12means to the sport. And they've got to figure
- 35:14something out there. I mean, I think everybody just
- 35:17needs to rally around that as opposed to shut it down.
- 35:20So we'll, you know, hopefully it's only two weeks and then
- 35:23she'd come back and kind of lead the way again.
- 35:26But you know, the, the fans and people speak with their eyes and
- 35:31their wallets, you know, and you've got to follow that.
- 35:34Otherwise, you know, you're just fooling yourself.
- 35:37Scott Document. From the Athletic Doc, great
- 35:39stuff. I know he got an interview lined
- 35:40up later on this afternoon. I'm not going to ask you what it
- 35:43is. I'll read about it in the
- 35:44Athletic when it gets published. Thank you Scott document.
- 35:46Appreciate your contribution. Hope to you schedule allows to
- 35:49join us on Monday. Appreciate it, doc.
- 35:52All right. Thanks.
- 35:53Guys, appreciate you. Yeah, good to talk to you,
- 35:54Scott. Dockerman from the Athletic as
- 35:56we check in on the latest as we go around a lot of sports
- 35:59coverage there with Doc. All right, Trent's plays of the
- 36:01day, they are next. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 36:05Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller and Condon, our final
- 36:07segment. So we do each and every day we
- 36:10turn over to Trent's plays of the day.
- 36:12Circus sports available in the state of Iowa.
- 36:14Available in the state of Illinois, Of course, downtown
- 36:18Las Vegas. If you get out to Las Vegas,
- 36:20highly recommend you get off the strip and head downtown LV.
- 36:24I saw they had a couple of concerts over the weekend.
- 36:26Oh yeah. How many?
- 36:27How many? There's three stages, right?
- 36:29There's one by the D and two right by one by the Golden Gate,
- 36:32one by the one by Circa and it was just mobbed and it's such a
- 36:36great place to watch people. It is.
- 36:38Oh, have. A gummy and watch.
