- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one forty eight of
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cards and Categories. I am Mike Couard from Baseball Perspectives,
- 0:22Speaker 1: joined as always by my very good friend Jeremy BREWERU
- 0:25Speaker 1: from Rasball. How you feeling tonight, buddy? It is TOPS
- 0:29Speaker 1: Chrome released day July twenty second. We've made it through
- 0:32Speaker 1: another year. Are you feeling the excitement?
- 0:35Speaker 2: I am feeling the excitement. I was very conflicted today.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I was tempted to go buy some types TOPS Chrome,
- 0:41Speaker 2: but then I got stuck at work for an extra
- 0:43Speaker 2: hour and a half and I didn't have time, so
- 0:45Speaker 2: I probably a good financial decision was made for me.
- 0:49Speaker 2: But I'm excited to talk tops Chrome. Even though the
- 0:53Speaker 2: price point the print runs maybe a little out there,
- 0:57Speaker 2: I still love the set. It's still one of the
- 0:59Speaker 2: best sets of the year. So it's gonna be fun
- 1:01Speaker 2: to dig in.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, so that is gonna be the main segment
- 1:05Speaker 1: of our show. Definitely Already go to rasball dot com
- 1:09Speaker 1: and look for the related post. It's also gonna be
- 1:12Speaker 1: in the show notes show details here so that you
- 1:14Speaker 1: can see pictures of this new set. Because there's a
- 1:18Speaker 1: lot there's a lot of guards there's a lot of inserts,
- 1:22Speaker 1: there's a lot of variations, and it's gonna take you
- 1:25Speaker 1: a while to catch up before we even get to
- 1:27Speaker 1: discussing it.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Before we do.
- 1:29Speaker 1: That, though, we're gonna get into some news and notes
- 1:31Speaker 1: that are gonna affect us on the fantasy side. And
- 1:34Speaker 1: like I said, we're speaking on July twenty second. Here,
- 1:37Speaker 1: it's a Wednesday night. It is the evening where the
- 1:42Speaker 1: Red Sox have won their fifteenth game. We'll see if
- 1:44Speaker 1: they can pull off the sixteenth win they might have
- 1:46Speaker 1: been cursed by. There was like a cursed photo of
- 1:49Speaker 1: Jaron Duran going around on social media that Red Sox
- 1:52Speaker 1: posted after the game of him winning the little like
- 1:57Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember what the trophy was off the
- 1:59Speaker 1: top MyD I want to say it was like a well,
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's not coming to me right now. But the thing
- 2:04Speaker 1: that stands out is that he has one of the
- 2:07Speaker 1: worst tattoos I've ever seen across his entire stomach is
- 2:10Speaker 1: just the last supper painting, and obviously that might have
- 2:14Speaker 1: cursed doomed the Red Sox. Here did you find the photo?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Have you found the photo in question? To remember what
- 2:20Speaker 1: plush toy.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Was Bowser Bowser.
- 2:23Speaker 1: That's right, the Bowser toy. I was going to say,
- 2:26Speaker 1: like a Charis Ard, but I was a little bit.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I'll give you credit from a from a sports card podcast.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'll give you the credit of of of mixing those
- 2:35Speaker 2: those two up. Hopefully, hopefully if you're listening, then you
- 2:38Speaker 2: are on the Pokemon Mario side of things. You don't
- 2:42Speaker 2: give us on that one.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I thought you were going to chime in
- 2:45Speaker 1: and say, this isn't that bad of a Last Supper tattoo?
- 2:48Speaker 3: Look at mine?
- 2:50Speaker 2: No, that's I mean, that's just impressive. Like, let's just
- 2:55Speaker 2: leave it with that, like a I don't know, that's
- 2:58Speaker 2: the work of art.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't know if it's impressive, positive or derogatory.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm just worried for later life, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: and playing baseball, and as a few pounds in the
- 3:10Speaker 2: Last Supper will expand true.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But anyways, let's get into those fantasy news and notes.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Unless that was your fantasy news and note on Jared Duran,
- 3:19Speaker 1: that was.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It, like just pure vibes alone. I think you should
- 3:22Speaker 2: own Jared Duran.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Okay, I don't. I might be on the opposite end
- 3:26Speaker 3: of the coin.
- 3:27Speaker 1: But let's get into some injuries that are affecting us
- 3:29Speaker 1: out there, because I mean, we're just gonna rattle through
- 3:33Speaker 1: the first three picks of every draft that happened.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I just released my top ten for twenty twenty seven,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and it's the top three guys that are on a
- 3:41Speaker 2: rundown that are hurt. I had to clarify that as
- 3:44Speaker 2: I was writing him, like this is next year, to
- 3:47Speaker 2: not get after me because I'm assuming they're all healthy.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you cursed everything out there too, So we're
- 3:54Speaker 1: gonna start off with show heyo Tani. This one is
- 3:57Speaker 1: less serious obviously for the fantasy game, because really the
- 3:59Speaker 1: new news here is that he's got to bother some
- 4:02Speaker 1: left knee and it's been barking at him for most
- 4:06Speaker 1: of the season now at this point, and so he
- 4:08Speaker 1: started to go underneath under treatment for it, where they're
- 4:11Speaker 1: actually like they're doing injections to lubricate the knee, which
- 4:15Speaker 1: means there's something going on with meniscus or something like that.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I would imagine in the middle of the knee. Also
- 4:20Speaker 1: doesn't seem like it's overly serious, But the thing is
- 4:24Speaker 1: is that it's gonna keep Otani from pitching for a while.
- 4:28Speaker 1: The news earlier this week was that it could be
- 4:30Speaker 1: indefinite and people were starting to speculate towards maybe playoffs
- 4:35Speaker 1: is when we would see Otani back. It sounds like
- 4:37Speaker 1: Otani is actually getting closer to doing moundwork now as
- 4:41Speaker 1: we're speaking on the Wednesday than it was even a
- 4:43Speaker 1: couple days ago. Just shows you how fluid this situation is,
- 4:47Speaker 1: just like the inside of Otani's knee. Like, like I said,
- 4:51Speaker 1: he's still hitting, so he's putting up pretty decent stats
- 4:54Speaker 1: for you. He certainly is not running this year, where
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know it's only six to dolen bases on the
- 4:59Speaker 1: year compared to twenty last year. We're never going to
- 5:01Speaker 1: see that fifty nine again that happened in twenty twenty
- 5:04Speaker 1: four as long as he pitches, So until he goes
- 5:07Speaker 1: back to full time DH because of an injury on
- 5:09Speaker 1: the pitching side to his arm, or they fully shut
- 5:13Speaker 1: down the pitching to let him right at the end
- 5:16Speaker 1: of the contract, we're gonna be seeing I think totals
- 5:19Speaker 1: that are twenty and less for Otani and the stolen
- 5:22Speaker 1: base side, so certainly trending that way this year. What
- 5:25Speaker 1: is your take here? Because it's been a little bit
- 5:28Speaker 1: more of a muted year at the plate, only twenty
- 5:30Speaker 1: two homers in the ninety seven games, a one forty
- 5:33Speaker 1: nine WRC plus when we've been used to marks in
- 5:35Speaker 1: the one eighties the past three years.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Are you blaming that on.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The knee, You're blaming it on the aging curve and
- 5:41Speaker 1: any just overall concerns about Otani going forward for the
- 5:46Speaker 1: rest of this year or wanting to revise that top
- 5:49Speaker 1: ten for twenty twenty seven.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I feel clearly some concerns for us
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the year, but not terribly of anything. From a
- 5:58Speaker 2: hitting perspective, it's probably the good news because he's got
- 6:02Speaker 2: to focus. That's what he's gonna be working on. You know,
- 6:05Speaker 2: you have to imagine, and you know he's a supreme athlete,
- 6:09Speaker 2: so he's been able to somehow pitch and hit for years,
- 6:13Speaker 2: but you have to think that it's got to give
- 6:15Speaker 2: him some boost on the hitting side. From recovery perspective,
- 6:17Speaker 2: things like that. Honestly, the way everything reads about this
- 6:21Speaker 2: one is more of like he's probably okay, but we're
- 6:26Speaker 2: the Dodgers and we're eleven games up, and it's okay.
- 6:30Speaker 2: We'll just let him rest and recover and bring him
- 6:33Speaker 2: back later because we want him to pitch in the playoffs.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Like that, That's what this one reads to me. So
- 6:38Speaker 2: I'm not terribly concerned. I think the biggest biggest question
- 6:41Speaker 2: overall is what you got at, which is the speed.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Is you know, at what point is Otani not really running?
- 6:48Speaker 2: And six deals in the year are have they asked
- 6:52Speaker 2: him not to run? Is he selected not to run?
- 6:54Speaker 2: I don't know this. Spots aren't just aren't there. But
- 6:58Speaker 2: that's the one thing for me that I do have
- 7:00Speaker 2: him very high my rankings for next year. I believe
- 7:03Speaker 2: that had number two, and if he continues to not run,
- 7:08Speaker 2: I think it starts to put a little damper on it. Now,
- 7:11Speaker 2: if you look at it from an overall perspective, and
- 7:13Speaker 2: he's going to pitch fifteen twenty games and do what
- 7:15Speaker 2: he's doing, he's still your number one pick. He just
- 7:18Speaker 2: might not be your number one hitter, which is kind
- 7:20Speaker 2: of a really odd odd thing to think about.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the other component there too is the
- 7:26Speaker 1: volume of runs and rbi are so crazy as long
- 7:30Speaker 1: as he is at the top of the Dodgers lineup.
- 7:31Speaker 1: But that I mean it is really tough to go
- 7:34Speaker 1: away from him as number one, because it's also like
- 7:37Speaker 1: a talent level ceiling too that you know, it's pretty
- 7:41Speaker 1: easy for him to flip it on and turn into
- 7:44Speaker 1: just an outstanding number one overall with.
- 7:48Speaker 3: A bullet pick.
- 7:49Speaker 1: So yeah, I think I'm there with you. This does
- 7:51Speaker 1: read as like the Dodgers trying to manage things. Honestly,
- 7:54Speaker 1: if I think it was the playoffs, it would be
- 7:56Speaker 1: possible that Otani would be pushing his way through this
- 7:59Speaker 1: and trying to make here and there when it really mattered.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But you know where they're at right now. There's no
- 8:05Speaker 1: one coming for them in the inn all West. They're
- 8:07Speaker 1: kind of an unstoppable machine, and they've even got more
- 8:10Speaker 1: talent coming through the pipeline there too.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Okay, let's go up one notch.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I think in seriousness, probably we have an update on
- 8:20Speaker 1: Aaron Judge from the New York Yankees. Obviously, that four
- 8:24Speaker 1: to six week window that we were originally talking about
- 8:26Speaker 1: when they would check in on that rib fractory he
- 8:30Speaker 1: had has happened. He says he's feeling ten times better
- 8:34Speaker 1: than when he broke.
- 8:35Speaker 2: The ribs, So is that an official medical diagnosis?
- 8:39Speaker 3: There? Yeah, it is.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's quoted in this piece, so ten times better. So
- 8:45Speaker 1: that's not good enough to get back to a rehab start.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Apparently he needs multiple more times than ten. I think
- 8:52Speaker 1: this is what we kind of talked about in terms
- 8:54Speaker 1: of when the injury happened, where it was also.
- 8:57Speaker 3: A little bit facetious.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I would say on the original timeline that we were
- 9:02Speaker 1: given where Judge was originally said to be out six
- 9:06Speaker 1: to eight weeks, because that's when he's going to be
- 9:07Speaker 1: like re evaluated, and certainly right now they don't have
- 9:11Speaker 1: a great timeline for when he will be back, which, honestly,
- 9:16Speaker 1: it almost is reading a little bit similar to Otani,
- 9:18Speaker 1: where it seems like the Yankees are just trying to
- 9:21Speaker 1: make sure Aaron Judge is ready to go for the playoffs,
- 9:24Speaker 1: and that might mean fantasy players out there be damned
- 9:27Speaker 1: because if you were waiting for Judge, he might not
- 9:31Speaker 1: be back until September. I think at this point, just
- 9:33Speaker 1: to get him some run before the playoffs. Are you
- 9:36Speaker 1: there with me or do you think that there's actually
- 9:39Speaker 1: more possibility that Aaron Judge is around the corner from
- 9:42Speaker 1: a return.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm right there with you. I think this is one.
- 9:47Speaker 2: If there would have been good news, would have came
- 9:48Speaker 2: out right away after that imaging. The fact that it
- 9:51Speaker 2: was kind of muted news means it wasn't good news,
- 9:54Speaker 2: and I would be surprised if he starts a rehab
- 9:57Speaker 2: assignment in the next four weeks. Frankly, I think your
- 10:01Speaker 2: best case scenario is kind of what you got at there,
- 10:03Speaker 2: which is a September return getting ramped up for the playoffs.
- 10:07Speaker 2: So that's why I think we're gonna get a judge here.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Granted you can't drop him, he can't move away from him.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He's still ever judge. When he's back, he's going to
- 10:13Speaker 2: be one of the best players in the game, and
- 10:15Speaker 2: you have to rely on that. You know, maybe there's
- 10:19Speaker 2: a weird window here that you want to try to
- 10:22Speaker 2: sell them in like a head to head league to
- 10:24Speaker 2: like the top team, so that they can be gearing
- 10:26Speaker 2: for their playoff run. Like there's maybe little little quirks there,
- 10:30Speaker 2: but overall this is just a stash and sit on
- 10:33Speaker 2: it maybe for more. From a long term perspective, this
- 10:37Speaker 2: is probably the one that I'm a little bit more
- 10:39Speaker 2: concerned about, not the rib injury, but like I just
- 10:43Speaker 2: feel like the last few years we've been running on
- 10:45Speaker 2: borrowed time with Judge, and this kind of injury that
- 10:51Speaker 2: seems slow to heal is what I've had expected probably
- 10:54Speaker 2: five years ago with Aaron Judge, and he just seems
- 10:57Speaker 2: outside of twenty twenty three to healthy at all times,
- 11:01Speaker 2: which is just odd. So I'm a little more concerned
- 11:05Speaker 2: long term for Judge in what this means from health perspective.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So am I changing twenty twenty seven expectations? Not yet,
- 11:12Speaker 2: But he's getting up there. Judge is getting up there
- 11:16Speaker 2: for sure.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I mean, he turns thirty five in April, so something
- 11:19Speaker 1: to keep in mind that, like, you know, the spryness
- 11:23Speaker 1: of his body is probably leaving him rapidly day by day,
- 11:27Speaker 1: and so that's a factor I think where you know
- 11:31Speaker 1: they also but also on the back end, like not
- 11:34Speaker 1: only does he bounce back slower probably as he gets older,
- 11:37Speaker 1: you know, they also don't want to push him harder
- 11:41Speaker 1: to be able to make sure that they don't have
- 11:43Speaker 1: to lose him for long stretches of the time. Where
- 11:47Speaker 1: if anything, like Giancarlo Stanton has kind of paved the
- 11:50Speaker 1: way ahead of a Hair and Judge that maybe the
- 11:52Speaker 1: Yankees have learned a few things from the way that
- 11:54Speaker 1: they have handled and man handled mishandled Stanton over the years.
- 11:59Speaker 1: So yeah, it is certainly more concerning. I don't think
- 12:04Speaker 1: he's quite in like Byron Buxton territory, but I.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Think but that's a tier.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Yeah, but he's one year away from being there.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I think that like, if he puts up another injured
- 12:14Speaker 1: year next year and you only get a half a year,
- 12:18Speaker 1: he's gonna start aging so quickly that I think he
- 12:21Speaker 1: goes in that bucket.
- 12:22Speaker 2: For me, this is an interesting one if you look
- 12:25Speaker 2: at Judge's overall career line. I think if you if
- 12:28Speaker 2: you talk about Judge, people just say, like he's probably
- 12:30Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer. But I think people forget how
- 12:33Speaker 2: injured he was and that he came up pretty late
- 12:36Speaker 2: all things considered. He you know, he came up in
- 12:38Speaker 2: his age twenty four season and only got twenty seven games,
- 12:42Speaker 2: so he really was until he's twenty five. But he
- 12:44Speaker 2: had a full run. He's only got three hundred and
- 12:46Speaker 2: eighty five career homers, seventy steals, two ninety one batting average. Yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 2: I get from a you know, WRC plus is one
- 12:53Speaker 2: seventy six, War sixty three seven, but like this is
- 12:58Speaker 2: what like those types of careers talk about, like the
- 13:00Speaker 2: peak is so impressive, but the the length of the
- 13:04Speaker 2: career isn't. And so it's just it will be another
- 13:08Speaker 2: of those interesting dialogues for folks of what does a
- 13:12Speaker 2: Hall of Famer look like? Judge looks like a Hall
- 13:14Speaker 2: of famer, but does he perform like one? So the
- 13:16Speaker 2: debate for a different day.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Wait, are you really there's no debate?
- 13:21Speaker 2: I think oh, as of now, I think there's a
- 13:24Speaker 2: debate like if if Judge ends up in Injuryriddle season
- 13:28Speaker 2: the next few years and ends up with like four
- 13:31Speaker 2: hundred and twenty five career home runs, I don't think
- 13:33Speaker 2: he's a Hall of Famer.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I think he's already in.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I don't think so much war.
- 13:38Speaker 3: It's so much peak, all the MVP Awards.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I think he's probably in easy psy. But okay, that's
- 13:46Speaker 1: why another day, All right, Well, let's ratchet up to
- 13:52Speaker 1: concern one more level. We've got Bobby Witt Junior going
- 13:55Speaker 1: down as well. He is on the injured list now
- 13:58Speaker 1: with a back injury where he's been battling through this
- 14:02Speaker 1: lower back tightness and they finally shelved him for the
- 14:04Speaker 1: ten day. Now, what gives me concern here is that
- 14:09Speaker 1: the Royals are like one of the few teams that
- 14:11Speaker 1: are totally absolutely out of it in al.
- 14:13Speaker 3: There's no hope for the Royals.
- 14:16Speaker 1: There is no fifteen game run in this team the
- 14:20Speaker 1: way that there was for the Red Sox, and so
- 14:24Speaker 1: they might think about really slow playing this Bobby Wit
- 14:28Speaker 1: junior injury and the recovery. You know, they have him
- 14:31Speaker 1: signed through twenty thirty four. Back injuries aren't something you
- 14:34Speaker 1: really want to mess around with, and so just something
- 14:38Speaker 1: to keep in mind. I don't know if I'm necessarily
- 14:40Speaker 1: like that level of concern. If I had to put
- 14:43Speaker 1: a percentage on it, you know, it's maybe like ten
- 14:46Speaker 1: to twenty percent there. But I do think he's probably
- 14:49Speaker 1: out more like three weeks instead of the two weeks,
- 14:53Speaker 1: just so that they make sure that he's ready to go.
- 14:56Speaker 1: But what's your take here on the Bobby Wit junior
- 14:58Speaker 1: injury and with the effect might be for the rest
- 15:00Speaker 1: of twenty twenty six.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I do kind of read this as
- 15:04Speaker 2: more of a very precautionary approach, knowing that they're generally
- 15:09Speaker 2: out of things, so back tightness not being described as
- 15:12Speaker 2: any single injury. I do see kind of the timeline
- 15:17Speaker 2: that you're getting through probably a mid August return. I'm
- 15:20Speaker 2: not sure that he's even gonna need to rehab assignment. Now,
- 15:24Speaker 2: this is going to be something that they're you know,
- 15:26Speaker 2: hiding not generally the Royals game to play around with
- 15:31Speaker 2: the media from an injury perspective, So I think he
- 15:35Speaker 2: truly just has to type back. He's going to be
- 15:36Speaker 2: back in a few weeks. And I mean, I know
- 15:39Speaker 2: some people have said he's had a down year, but
- 15:43Speaker 2: like he legitimately could have finish with twenty twenty five
- 15:45Speaker 2: homers and fifty steals and a pretty pretty rough lineup.
- 15:50Speaker 2: So I still think he is one of the best
- 15:52Speaker 2: hitters out there. And if this is a down year,
- 15:57Speaker 2: I can't wait to see what the up year looks like.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it was twenty twenty four but with
- 16:02Speaker 1: more steals probably, but like, yeah, but I mean that
- 16:06Speaker 1: is certainly it seems out when you're looking at the
- 16:09Speaker 1: one nineteen WRC plus a career low one seventy one ISO,
- 16:12Speaker 1: but also still even this late in the season, like
- 16:16Speaker 1: this is one of those situations where you know he
- 16:19Speaker 1: rips off three or four homers in a week, and
- 16:21Speaker 1: it's right back to that one thirty WRC plus that
- 16:25Speaker 1: we saw last year, and the ISO pops back above
- 16:29Speaker 1: one ninety quickly, And so yeah, I'm with you that
- 16:32Speaker 1: like it. Certainly it's right in the range of outcomes.
- 16:35Speaker 1: And the nice thing about Bobby Wood Junior from a
- 16:37Speaker 1: draft perspective is the floor is so high on him
- 16:42Speaker 1: that like, if this is the floor, that like, wow,
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's a lot of guaranteed production.
- 16:49Speaker 2: So yeah, if you were to say, what guy's gonna
- 16:51Speaker 2: go thirty sixty next year, it's probably the only one
- 16:54Speaker 2: that I could say I would want to put a
- 16:57Speaker 2: bet on. There's other guys with the talent, but the injury.
- 17:00Speaker 2: He's like an a quna or something like that with
- 17:03Speaker 2: you know, I would not be shocked to see him
- 17:04Speaker 2: pull off that kind of season.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I might might be on Ellie if you
- 17:09Speaker 1: had to make me put it on somebody, but Bobby's
- 17:11Speaker 1: right there.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Okay, let's move to the pitching side.
- 17:15Speaker 1: And this guy was not a first rounder, so we'll
- 17:17Speaker 1: get out of the first round for everybody. I mean,
- 17:20Speaker 1: he is going to be a high draft pick next
- 17:21Speaker 1: year because everything has come together in twenty twenty six
- 17:25Speaker 1: for Max Meyer. But he's landing on the il now
- 17:28Speaker 1: with a next strain. Now, if you recall, this is
- 17:31Speaker 1: actually I think pretty similar to what Ben Brown from
- 17:34Speaker 1: the Cubs went down with a few weeks ago, and
- 17:37Speaker 1: it has not been great news on that front, where
- 17:40Speaker 1: it is not healed quickly and there haven't been really
- 17:42Speaker 1: any updates. The other thing with next strains is it
- 17:46Speaker 1: feels like they're happening more with pictures because what I
- 17:49Speaker 1: think has also been discovered is that it usually is
- 17:53Speaker 1: connected to the shoulder at the end of the day.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I mean, obviously your neck is right next to your shoulder,
- 17:59Speaker 1: but there's like a link between neck injuries and shoulder injuries,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and it all kind of coming together. Max Meyer is
- 18:06Speaker 1: twenty seven years old. It's been a career year two
- 18:08Speaker 1: sixty eight ERA three fifty one fifth and one hundred
- 18:11Speaker 1: and eleven innings, nine in one record. The K minus
- 18:15Speaker 1: BB has been pretty solid at seventeen point three percent,
- 18:18Speaker 1: but the K percentage has been up twenty six point
- 18:20Speaker 1: two percent. I wrote about Meyer a few months ago
- 18:24Speaker 1: when he was like right at the at the precipice
- 18:27Speaker 1: of this blast off over at BP and a lot
- 18:31Speaker 1: of it has just been sequencing and tightening up of
- 18:34Speaker 1: that slider where he's always had a great pitch mix,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and he just found the right groove with it this
- 18:38Speaker 1: year and has stayed consistent with it. So I used
- 18:41Speaker 1: to be a not Max Meyer guy. I am a
- 18:43Speaker 1: Max Meyer guy now. But this has also been a
- 18:46Speaker 1: part of the Max Meyer experience has been the injuries.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So where are you at with Meyern right now?
- 18:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say I'm generally not a big Max Meyer guy.
- 18:56Speaker 2: There's a there's just a lot of things that are
- 18:59Speaker 2: going just a little bit better than probably should be,
- 19:01Speaker 2: which I think is giving to some of the results.
- 19:04Speaker 2: He doesn't have necessarily overwhelming stuff. He doesn't have the
- 19:08Speaker 2: best control, he doesn't do the best keeping on the
- 19:11Speaker 2: on the ground. He's definitely had some baby bluffs lucks
- 19:14Speaker 2: and left on base plucks, some Hormer fly ball olh luck,
- 19:16Speaker 2: like a number of things. Is he a mid two
- 19:19Speaker 2: or mid three to four e RA, Yeah, I think so.
- 19:23Speaker 2: And is that a viable fantasy starter? Yeah, I also
- 19:26Speaker 2: think so. But I do think because of the strikeout
- 19:29Speaker 2: up side and the era that he's carried, especially since
- 19:32Speaker 2: like the beginning of June, where he's carrying like a
- 19:34Speaker 2: two to twenty three era, it's gonna be the price
- 19:38Speaker 2: is going to go probably higher than it's worth, knowing
- 19:42Speaker 2: the injury risk and some of the luck metrics he's had.
- 19:44Speaker 2: So I do like Meyer. I've I've picked up multiple
- 19:47Speaker 2: places and I will run with him, But I think
- 19:50Speaker 2: that the price is going to escalate above going into
- 19:52Speaker 2: next year what he's actually worth.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so too.
- 19:56Speaker 1: So like I'm just pulling up some like rankings, and
- 19:59Speaker 1: you know, seriously rankings. Meyer was clocking in the mid forties.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Our boy Marmos Sad had.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Him fourteenth before the injury. I don't know if I
- 20:08Speaker 3: would go.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I feel that the forties seems like right ish, maybe
- 20:12Speaker 2: fifties for me, somewhere somewhere in.
- 20:14Speaker 1: That range, Yeah, I think, I yeah, that is I
- 20:17Speaker 1: love you, Marmos, but that is very very rich. But yeah,
- 20:23Speaker 1: I think he's probably yeah, around forty ish for me
- 20:26Speaker 1: going forward. And I mean that's going to be a
- 20:28Speaker 1: solid number three starter, I think. And yeah, that's exactly
- 20:32Speaker 1: where I would have him where certainly you can see
- 20:35Speaker 1: the pathway to him becoming.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Like new age Sonny Gray, down down down the line.
- 20:40Speaker 1: But the one thing that will have to be a
- 20:42Speaker 1: big hurdle for Meyer is just the volume we've never
- 20:46Speaker 1: This is already a career high in innings that we've
- 20:48Speaker 1: seen from him in the majors, and it might not
- 20:52Speaker 1: he might not be returning soon at that nick injury
- 20:54Speaker 1: is really serious. All right, Well, I brought up shoulder injuries.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Kingis shoulder injuries. Because Brandon Woodriff
- 21:03Speaker 1: underwent the knife for the baky shoulder he's been battling.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Now. I don't know what the what the long.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Term kind of like outlook is here because.
- 21:17Speaker 3: It's another capsule surgery, which I.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Don't know if I can even name guys that have
- 21:22Speaker 1: come back from two of those, like I can name
- 21:25Speaker 1: guys that've come back from three. Tommy John's the way that,
- 21:27Speaker 1: like Paul Reagins is trying to do.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It's a very short list.
- 21:30Speaker 1: But like this type of shoulder injury with thrascic outlet
- 21:34Speaker 1: syndrome that he's battled, I don't know if I can
- 21:37Speaker 1: really recall a guy who's been through this type of
- 21:41Speaker 1: uphill battle the wood Drift's facing right now. He's gonna
- 21:44Speaker 1: turn thirty four in the spring as well. So I
- 21:48Speaker 1: think you can tell read the lines here that I
- 21:50Speaker 1: think it's unfortunately probably the end of his career.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I don't know how he makes his way.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Back from this appropriately, like without just coming up and
- 22:00Speaker 1: throwing ninety if he can even touch that. We saw
- 22:04Speaker 1: it kind of as his arm was giving out in
- 22:06Speaker 1: certain spots throughout starts this year where it was dropping
- 22:10Speaker 1: in the mid to upper nineties or mid to upper eighties.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And yeah, unfortunately, you know, when he went down, we
- 22:18Speaker 1: were talking about how I don't know if we would
- 22:20Speaker 1: ever give up on Woodroff, but this was the outcome that,
- 22:23Speaker 1: like now you do kind of have to give up
- 22:26Speaker 1: on him, where like even in like deep dynasty keeper leagues,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I don't even know if he's worth stashing it on
- 22:32Speaker 1: any measure, because not only are you looking at him
- 22:35Speaker 1: being out, I mean he's probably out next year too, right, Like,
- 22:39Speaker 1: I don't know how he gets back on the mountain
- 22:40Speaker 1: in twenty twenty seven, so he might not be back
- 22:43Speaker 1: till twenty eight, and at that point he's going.
- 22:45Speaker 3: To be thirty five.
- 22:46Speaker 1: And again, I don't know if he's gonna want.
- 22:50Speaker 3: To go through all that. So what's your take? Here
- 22:52Speaker 3: in Brandon Woodruff, do you.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Maybe still want to stash him away in dynasty keeper
- 22:55Speaker 1: situations where he's cheap and not costing new roster space.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm always gonna be a Brandon Woodruff truther. I
- 23:02Speaker 2: think if you look at this just career like this,
- 23:05Speaker 2: this shouts like ace profile. I mean, this is a
- 23:09Speaker 2: guy that has struck out on his career ten and
- 23:12Speaker 2: a half batters per nine, barely walking more than two
- 23:16Speaker 2: career whip of one oh two, career era of three ten,
- 23:23Speaker 2: a fifty five and thirty win loss record, and a
- 23:27Speaker 2: guy that absolutely would go deep into games and shoves,
- 23:29Speaker 2: but like, injuries have just been the nightmare. And so
- 23:32Speaker 2: I think that's what was funny when we talked about
- 23:34Speaker 2: him last time, was like, if he ever pitches, I
- 23:37Speaker 2: will own him every single time he pitches. But I
- 23:41Speaker 2: honestly think you're right. I don't think he's back till
- 23:43Speaker 2: twenty eight. He's saying all the right things I want
- 23:46Speaker 2: to come back, Like, I think he knows how talented
- 23:48Speaker 2: he is, and this is a guy who's also figured
- 23:50Speaker 2: out how to pitch from like ninety seven mile hour
- 23:53Speaker 2: fastball to ninety two mile hour fastball and been just
- 23:56Speaker 2: as successful. So I think I still love everything about
- 23:59Speaker 2: brown Woodroff, but you can't hold on to him. There's
- 24:03Speaker 2: no reason. This is coming from a guy that will
- 24:04Speaker 2: own every injured pitcher like you just can't do that.
- 24:08Speaker 2: It's two years of hanging onto this the hope that
- 24:11Speaker 2: he comes back, And I think I might be willing
- 24:14Speaker 2: to argue if he was on like a long term
- 24:17Speaker 2: contract or something. He's not. He go to qualify and
- 24:20Speaker 2: offer this year, and so he has no home for
- 24:24Speaker 2: the next few years, and a lot of teams would
- 24:26Speaker 2: be willing to take like I'm gonna lose you for
- 24:28Speaker 2: part of this year, maybe get you back to the part
- 24:30Speaker 2: next year, that kind of you know, two year deal
- 24:32Speaker 2: paying one year salary. I don't think that's gonna happen
- 24:35Speaker 2: for him. I don't, and I think that's gonna be
- 24:37Speaker 2: The issue is that he's not gonna have his platform
- 24:40Speaker 2: to show himself and that's gonna be the biggest downfall
- 24:44Speaker 2: of him. So yeah, I hate to say it, but
- 24:47Speaker 2: I'm I'm actually with you on this one. For once,
- 24:50Speaker 2: I have to be selling rend Woodruff. I'm cutting him.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I had to be that extreme of a case.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yes, his shoulder had to basically fall off.
- 24:59Speaker 1: I get it's like, yeah, that thing is just like
- 25:02Speaker 1: mashed potatoes at this point, and that is where it
- 25:05Speaker 1: had to go. But I think that it also shows
- 25:07Speaker 1: like what talent he had and the fact that even
- 25:10Speaker 1: made it back from the first one was really impressive,
- 25:12Speaker 1: and so yeah, it'll be it'll be really tough, I
- 25:16Speaker 1: think for him to make it back. So just something
- 25:18Speaker 1: to consider if you do see him pop up on
- 25:20Speaker 1: any waiver wires. Well, let's stick in Milwaukee. Because in
- 25:24Speaker 1: response to this, the Brewers did go out and make
- 25:27Speaker 1: a deal with the Astros. They went out and picked
- 25:29Speaker 1: up Lance mcculler's junior where also oddly the Astros are
- 25:34Speaker 1: shipping salary from themselves over to Milwaukee, which is a
- 25:38Speaker 1: strange situation. But they've also added Colton Gordon, who I
- 25:42Speaker 1: mean immediately everybody was like, Brewers win this trade. Colton
- 25:45Speaker 1: Gordon's gonna get Cy Young Award votes. That, Like, I
- 25:50Speaker 1: do really like what a team like Milwaukee will do
- 25:53Speaker 1: with a Colton Gordon. Whenever you have a pitch ability
- 25:57Speaker 1: lefty like that, that's the type of play that Milwaukee
- 26:01Speaker 1: just absolutely shapes into a dependable back end starter, so
- 26:05Speaker 1: he is down in triple A. But certainly whenever Colton
- 26:09Speaker 1: Gordon gets his shot in Milwaukee, he's got a full
- 26:12Speaker 1: endorsement from me, just because at this point they've just
- 26:17Speaker 1: proven that you should trust them every time until Milwaukee
- 26:19Speaker 1: doesn't do it. But should we be doing it on
- 26:23Speaker 1: Lance mc coller Senior. I think that's probably the biggest,
- 26:25Speaker 1: the bigger question because obviously the talent has certainly been
- 26:29Speaker 1: there from mcculler's in the past, and he has gotten
- 26:32Speaker 1: into a game in the big leagues for the Brewers.
- 26:35Speaker 1: You actually already saw a pitch mix change right off
- 26:37Speaker 1: the bat for him in Milwaukee where they up the
- 26:40Speaker 1: usage of his changeup, and it looks like it got
- 26:47Speaker 1: two whiffs out of three swings in that little outing,
- 26:49Speaker 1: So not terrible but also a really small sample size,
- 26:54Speaker 1: but also really fascinating when you see a team as
- 26:57Speaker 1: sharp as Milwaukee make a change so immediately and as
- 27:00Speaker 1: right out, So something to watch there. The overall just
- 27:05Speaker 1: Arsenal was also fastball lists, which was normally pretty much
- 27:10Speaker 1: what he was doing in Houston, but the velocities are
- 27:13Speaker 1: right in range and really was dialing back that knuckle
- 27:15Speaker 1: curve in Milwaukee for mccollers. So what do you what's
- 27:19Speaker 1: your take here on the trade for Gordon and mccoller's
- 27:23Speaker 1: and any any interest in either of them down the
- 27:26Speaker 1: stretch as they're pitching for the Brewers.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know that I have a ton of interest.
- 27:31Speaker 2: I mean, if we start with Gordon, I think your
- 27:33Speaker 2: assessment of like interesting arm in a good spot, it's
- 27:38Speaker 2: you have to be willing to consider a flyer. But
- 27:41Speaker 2: I don't see anything that profile was like screams I
- 27:43Speaker 2: need to own him or I need to have him
- 27:44Speaker 2: on a deep watch list. It's just kind of one
- 27:46Speaker 2: of those being the good spot. It's kind of like
- 27:48Speaker 2: what Quinn Priester became useful pitching for the Brewers type thing,
- 27:52Speaker 2: Like I think he could be valuable, but I'm not.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I'm not too worried if I miss out on that
- 27:58Speaker 2: boat that it's gonna he's going to become snack, Sayga.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I mean, I could be wrong, but I just I'm
- 28:02Speaker 2: not seeing the profile. And then from a mccoller's perspective, like, man,
- 28:07Speaker 2: it's it's been what now like four or five years
- 28:11Speaker 2: since he was like a useful pitcher, and I think
- 28:17Speaker 2: when he did that he pitched like fifty innings and
- 28:19Speaker 2: twenty twenty two. So I'm I'm I'm really just I can't.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I don't understand this deal.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Uh.
- 28:26Speaker 2: From the Brewer's perspective, maybe they see something McCullers to
- 28:29Speaker 2: your point, that they're willing to try. Maybe they're desperate
- 28:32Speaker 2: with knowing what's happening with Woodruff. But just McCuller is
- 28:37Speaker 2: just his stuff's not there, Like it's the he needs
- 28:40Speaker 2: his big velocity to make the stuff cut and move
- 28:44Speaker 2: and be be the nasty guy that he was when
- 28:47Speaker 2: he was when he was younger, and it's just not there.
- 28:50Speaker 2: And I don't I don't think the Brewers are going
- 28:52Speaker 2: to find that. Uh, they need to find five mile
- 28:54Speaker 2: an hour on the fastball, and that's just that's not
- 28:57Speaker 2: gonna happen with plants McCullers. And so yeah, I'll be
- 29:01Speaker 2: on the sideline. I'm very very comfortable there.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the fact that like the cutters like
- 29:08Speaker 1: hovering around ninety, that's what's gonna make it tough. That
- 29:11Speaker 1: like there's just not enough variation in the rest of
- 29:13Speaker 1: the profile. If you do see any tick up in
- 29:15Speaker 1: the cutter, then maybe it's an interesting situation, but I
- 29:19Speaker 1: think he is going to be a longer leaf piece,
- 29:21Speaker 1: probably for the Brewers long term, but certainly like if
- 29:25Speaker 1: the production starts coming along from a Collers, don't don't
- 29:29Speaker 1: doubt it.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Just hop on board.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Like I'm I'm at that point on all Brewers pitchers
- 29:34Speaker 1: kind of across the board that there's not one that
- 29:37Speaker 1: I will like second guess what they're doing.
- 29:41Speaker 3: We've got another transaction in Milwaukee. We're gonna stay there.
- 29:45Speaker 1: South Fraylik hit the el with a shoulder injury. It
- 29:48Speaker 1: sounds like he's been battling it. And you know, even
- 29:51Speaker 1: for how soft of a hitter south Freylick was, it
- 29:55Speaker 1: certainly showed this year to that the max EV was
- 30:00Speaker 1: only it was like two ticks belows max EV from
- 30:02Speaker 1: last year. The barrel percentage was a little bit down.
- 30:05Speaker 1: The WRC plus was down from one to fourteen to
- 30:08Speaker 1: seventy six. So I mean Max or south Fralick was
- 30:12Speaker 1: sitting right on that edge to be able to be
- 30:15Speaker 1: a major league hitter and the shoulder injury was sapping.
- 30:18Speaker 1: That sounds like he I don't know if there's really
- 30:22Speaker 1: a great timeline on this, because the Brewers might just
- 30:25Speaker 1: kind of let him really recover all the way and
- 30:29Speaker 1: nurse his way all the way back to health, because.
- 30:31Speaker 3: They've got some great options.
- 30:32Speaker 1: That's where I want to focus this conversation, because I
- 30:36Speaker 1: thought the odds on Winter for the playing time would
- 30:39Speaker 1: be our boy Luis Laura, the switch hitting phenom that
- 30:43Speaker 1: has been recently promoted and was signed to that extension.
- 30:46Speaker 1: But the beneficiary of this playing time has actually been
- 30:50Speaker 1: Andrew Vaughn, where they've started playing Jake Bowers in the
- 30:54Speaker 1: outfield more to be able to shift things around. And
- 30:57Speaker 1: Vaughan was stuck on a short side of a plot
- 30:59Speaker 1: tune there for a long time and now has really
- 31:03Speaker 1: carved out some great playing time. That handmate injury has
- 31:07Speaker 1: not stopped him at all in Milwaukee fifty nine games
- 31:11Speaker 1: with a three ZHO six three eighty eight eighty one
- 31:13Speaker 1: slash line the one forty WRC plus uh he is
- 31:17Speaker 1: smoking the ball pretty well that like he just watches
- 31:21Speaker 1: that bats he's locked in U. So, is are you
- 31:25Speaker 1: all back in on Andrew Vaughn even with that handmade
- 31:28Speaker 1: injury or are you still thinking, hey, Luis Laura, even
- 31:32Speaker 1: though he's on the bench right now, might be lurking,
- 31:34Speaker 1: might be ready for that right field spot after he
- 31:36Speaker 1: gets used to, you know, knowing where his locker is
- 31:39Speaker 1: in the locker room.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is the weird one where I'm
- 31:42Speaker 2: actually excited about both. And the funny thing is even
- 31:47Speaker 2: Bowers has actually looked a lot better than I think
- 31:50Speaker 2: people expected Pratt. Pratts has been has been decent. I
- 31:54Speaker 2: wish somehow that kicks Joey Ortiz out to some degrees.
- 31:57Speaker 2: That just doesn't seem like the Brewiser ever to want
- 32:00Speaker 2: to fully benish Joey Ortiz. But yeah, Vaughan, like ever
- 32:05Speaker 2: since he's coming to Milwaukee, he's been a different hitter,
- 32:08Speaker 2: even this year. Like the plate approach is just like phenomenal.
- 32:12Speaker 2: He just feels looks so comfortable to plate. I know
- 32:15Speaker 2: that we've only got you know, one hundred and sixty
- 32:17Speaker 2: hundred and seventy at bats, but he just looked very
- 32:21Speaker 2: very comfortable, very solid, and we know that there's power
- 32:24Speaker 2: in that bat. So yeah, three homers in the season,
- 32:28Speaker 2: finishing with fifteen, I'm actually not opposed to that. I
- 32:31Speaker 2: think it's very possible batting average continues to rise, which
- 32:35Speaker 2: like who thought Andrew Vaughn could be a batting average asset. No,
- 32:39Speaker 2: but yeah, you have to like that profile. And like
- 32:43Speaker 2: I said, Laura, I think he's just gonna find spots
- 32:45Speaker 2: to play because he is so gush our athletic that
- 32:49Speaker 2: he is a big part of their future. So they're
- 32:52Speaker 2: gonna keep slowly getting him into the games. They're gonna
- 32:55Speaker 2: he's gonna play all around the field to a degree.
- 32:58Speaker 2: I think that they're gonna be really really happy with
- 33:00Speaker 2: him as well. So give me both. But I think
- 33:03Speaker 2: if I had to pick one for right now for
- 33:04Speaker 2: this season, is Vaughn.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's that's very fair.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And I mean the other thing here too, is I
- 33:11Speaker 1: mean Vaughn is rapidly moving up like my twenty twenty
- 33:14Speaker 1: seven like star next to their name list as well,
- 33:18Speaker 1: because like he's doing this still even though like he's
- 33:23Speaker 1: not showing signs of the handmade injury affecting him. You know,
- 33:26Speaker 1: it is to some extent just because like it takes
- 33:29Speaker 1: time to build that strength back up in one's arm,
- 33:31Speaker 1: in one's thirst, and so yeah, if he can post
- 33:34Speaker 1: and be decent through the rest of twenty twenty six,
- 33:38Speaker 1: I think the ear is up going into twenty twenty seven.
- 33:42Speaker 3: On Andrew Vaughn where only twenty eight right now.
- 33:45Speaker 1: So still relatively young that I think there's still enough
- 33:48Speaker 1: juice in this bat for the Brewers to extract. So
- 33:50Speaker 1: something to keep in mind going forward. Somebody else who's
- 33:54Speaker 1: kind of in the vein of Andrew Vaughn. Another corner
- 33:56Speaker 1: guy got called up this week. Tommy Tanks, Tommy White
- 34:00Speaker 1: from the Sacramento Athletics, came through LSU where he made
- 34:05Speaker 1: his name and earned them moniker. Tommy Tanks, you know,
- 34:09Speaker 1: was just an absolute home run Maven when he was
- 34:12Speaker 1: in college. Has shifted certainly since he's gotten into the
- 34:17Speaker 1: affiliated league though, because the power hasn't quite been there
- 34:21Speaker 1: as much, and he's actually more of like a contact forward,
- 34:24Speaker 1: batting average guy, a little bit like a pre breakout
- 34:27Speaker 1: like justin Turner, where the you do know that there's
- 34:31Speaker 1: latent power underneath there, but he's really made the conscious
- 34:34Speaker 1: choice to make sure that he's making contact and racking
- 34:38Speaker 1: up a decent batting average, which is so old school,
- 34:41Speaker 1: but in across two levels, seventy six games before the
- 34:44Speaker 1: call up is a three h three three fifty three
- 34:46Speaker 1: four sixty five slash line. It was only a ninety
- 34:48Speaker 1: seven WRC plus because those are two pretty offensively heavy
- 34:54Speaker 1: environments there, so it doesn't stand out as much. But
- 34:57Speaker 1: did pick up ten homers and sixty four RBIs and
- 34:59Speaker 1: the seventy six games is getting the opportunity here with
- 35:03Speaker 1: the A's because of Nick Kurtz's injury with his thumb,
- 35:06Speaker 1: and it looks like that thumb the update hasn't been
- 35:09Speaker 1: great on it. It's been actually pretty muted. And then
- 35:13Speaker 1: you also had Joshua Corona Gardner Grouer go down this
- 35:17Speaker 1: week with a ruptured testicle and subsequent surgery. So lots
- 35:22Speaker 1: of playing time here for Tommy White, even though might
- 35:26Speaker 1: not be how the A's wanted to draw it up
- 35:28Speaker 1: for him. He's been playing first base and third base.
- 35:31Speaker 1: What's your take here on Tommy White? Because he was
- 35:33Speaker 1: a guy where when the draft happened. I remember discussing
- 35:38Speaker 1: back in twenty twenty four. I was like, hey, you
- 35:39Speaker 1: know what, look out for this guy. I think he's
- 35:41Speaker 1: not getting as much credit as he can and could
- 35:44Speaker 1: move pretty quickly through the system. So now he's arrived
- 35:47Speaker 1: and the A's have a lot of home games next
- 35:49Speaker 1: week too.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I do actually really like Tommy White.
- 35:54Speaker 2: If you look at his prospects of on page, very
- 35:58Speaker 2: very strong. He's kind of a upper quartile kind of
- 36:02Speaker 2: hitter as far as exit velocity's hard hit rates. His
- 36:06Speaker 2: overall contact profile walks a little more than you want
- 36:10Speaker 2: to chase this a little bit more and you want
- 36:11Speaker 2: to overall, but generally pretty brushy gush on the solid
- 36:15Speaker 2: does not strike out much at all. And then if
- 36:18Speaker 2: you look at his minor league numbers, I know you
- 36:19Speaker 2: say the power has not really been there, but like
- 36:22Speaker 2: he's never really been at one stop too long, and
- 36:26Speaker 2: so it kind of gets masked that he's you know,
- 36:28Speaker 2: getting like sixty seventy games to stop and pop in
- 36:32Speaker 2: ten twelve homers, and so you kind of double that
- 36:35Speaker 2: and he's a twenty homer bat hitting roughly three hundred
- 36:39Speaker 2: like throughout the minor leagues. Now, is that going to hold?
- 36:42Speaker 3: No?
- 36:43Speaker 2: But is this a guy that could you know, seize
- 36:45Speaker 2: himself into twenty homers with a two eighty average and
- 36:48Speaker 2: some regional accounting SATs with no speed. Yeah, Like, I
- 36:52Speaker 2: this is a really interesting corner and field profile and
- 36:55Speaker 2: that's that's where I think I position him as a
- 36:59Speaker 2: perspective corner infield bat and he could develop into more
- 37:04Speaker 2: because I do feel like the Athletics have gotten a
- 37:06Speaker 2: lot out of this kind of profile from all the
- 37:09Speaker 2: types of you know, Soderstroums and shaling of Leers and
- 37:12Speaker 2: guys like that which have this kind of power. First
- 37:16Speaker 2: with improving plate discipline profile Rooker similar thing as well,
- 37:20Speaker 2: and with having a pretty solid plate discipline to start,
- 37:24Speaker 2: I think they can get a little bit more on
- 37:25Speaker 2: the power side from White. So yeah, I'm interested. I'm in.
- 37:29Speaker 2: I'm not like jumping to have my starting lineup, but
- 37:33Speaker 2: he is a really intriguing plug and play at this point.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and especially if he hits im proves himself while
- 37:42Speaker 1: Kurtz is out. I mean, there's a DH spot open
- 37:44Speaker 1: because of Rooker being out. So there's certainly plenty of
- 37:48Speaker 1: runway here with the Athletics for Tommy White the rest
- 37:51Speaker 1: of the year. So very intriguing corner bat for sure. Okay, Well,
- 37:57Speaker 1: if you're in those show notes, you were already clicking
- 37:59Speaker 1: in there to get to the Rasball post, you probably
- 38:01Speaker 1: already saw the Baseball card release calendar that's down there.
- 38:05Speaker 1: A few updates, mostly the pre orders that we had
- 38:09Speaker 1: from previous pods have been locked in. They've got real
- 38:12Speaker 1: release dates. And then also because tops Chrome came out,
- 38:16Speaker 1: Panini was like, hey, don't forget about us. They threw
- 38:18Speaker 1: Panini Prism on the schedule to come out in a
- 38:21Speaker 1: couple of weeks. So certainly going to be more overlooked
- 38:25Speaker 1: than TOPS Chrome. But we're going to take a little
- 38:28Speaker 1: bit of a break and we'll be back on the
- 38:30Speaker 1: other side to talk about a very very deep TOPS
- 38:35Speaker 1: Chrome set. So stick around everybody, all right, Welcome back, everybody.
- 38:55Speaker 1: We're going to dive right into the Tops Chrome twenty
- 38:58Speaker 1: twenty six checklist and overview. So like I said at
- 39:02Speaker 1: the top of the show, make sure you go into
- 39:04Speaker 1: those show notes, go to the link that will have
- 39:07Speaker 1: the related ras ball post. You'll be able to see
- 39:10Speaker 1: the designs of all the cards that we're about to
- 39:12Speaker 1: talk about. Because we've got a lot of cards to
- 39:14Speaker 1: talk about. I will say that that top Schrome is
- 39:18Speaker 1: a huge release on the calendar every year, and we
- 39:22Speaker 1: are speaking today on release day, July twenty second, although
- 39:26Speaker 1: over probably the last seven to ten days, cards have
- 39:30Speaker 1: certainly been leaking out on Reddit and eBay, just because
- 39:34Speaker 1: there are retailers out there that we're sitting on value
- 39:37Speaker 1: boxes blaster boxes that just didn't exactly know the date
- 39:41Speaker 1: to put them up, and that's how they get into
- 39:44Speaker 1: the public and so as well as I mean, I
- 39:47Speaker 1: think there was lots going on with Fanaticsfest over this
- 39:49Speaker 1: past week in New York and stuff was leaking out
- 39:52Speaker 1: that way as well. So we've got a very very
- 39:55Speaker 1: lengthy segment I think to cover all of the different
- 39:58Speaker 1: cards within this set can have a huge print run
- 40:02Speaker 1: and also a huge insert run like that is where
- 40:05Speaker 1: all the volume of talking is going to come from.
- 40:07Speaker 1: I can't remember the last time we've covered a set
- 40:10Speaker 1: that had this volume of inserts in it. I mean,
- 40:14Speaker 1: it was probably like a Series one a couple of
- 40:17Speaker 1: years ago or something. But even on the flagship, it
- 40:19Speaker 1: does feel like Tops has been calling the number of
- 40:22Speaker 1: inserts a little bit. They must have just been saving
- 40:24Speaker 1: them all up for Tops Chrome, because we've got quite
- 40:27Speaker 1: the list of all of them. What's your take here,
- 40:29Speaker 1: because it does seem like Tops Chrome is honestly starting
- 40:32Speaker 1: to move into like territory for Tops overall, that like
- 40:36Speaker 1: this is starting to become bigger than the Series One.
- 40:39Speaker 1: It feels that way, especially with the way that this
- 40:42Speaker 1: product's been loaded, right.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it definitely does. I mean the hobby has continued
- 40:47Speaker 2: to lean towards Chrome as being kind of the official
- 40:50Speaker 2: rookie cards and things like that, like the paper flagship
- 40:54Speaker 2: versions just not as much or as valuable. There's just
- 40:59Speaker 2: the demand for the chrome cards to just continued continue
- 41:02Speaker 2: to rise, just like the price of the cards themselves
- 41:05Speaker 2: to acquire continue to continue to rise. But it is
- 41:08Speaker 2: kind of like the premiere set for the standard collector
- 41:13Speaker 2: out there, Like it's a little slightly higher end, but
- 41:15Speaker 2: it's not like the complete feaster famine that is out
- 41:19Speaker 2: there with some of the much higher end products. And
- 41:21Speaker 2: there is just so much in this set, so much hope,
- 41:24Speaker 2: so much as a chase where some sets like the
- 41:27Speaker 2: one or two cards kind of get pulled and you're like, yeah,
- 41:29Speaker 2: the big ones are out there. There's big ones glower
- 41:32Speaker 2: in this There's so much to go after, so many
- 41:34Speaker 2: different inserts and autos and parallels. There's a few of them.
- 41:37Speaker 2: If you're not living under a rock, you know that's
- 41:40Speaker 2: what's going to be happening with tops. But it also
- 41:42Speaker 2: tells you the print run is going to be pretty significant,
- 41:45Speaker 2: So I have to imagine these are being ripped everywhere
- 41:48Speaker 2: if you're going to card shows over the next few months,
- 41:51Speaker 2: you're going to find Tops Chrome twenty twenty six everywhere,
- 41:55Speaker 2: ripped value boxes, things like that. But it is becoming
- 41:58Speaker 2: like to this point, I think one of the premier
- 42:01Speaker 2: releases for tops every year.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and let's get into some of the ways that
- 42:06Speaker 1: you can purchase it if you're out there looking for
- 42:08Speaker 1: stuff to rip. So you're gonna have jumbo boxes, hobby boxes,
- 42:13Speaker 1: and then mega megaboxes and value boxes.
- 42:17Speaker 3: The megaboxes will just.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Be larger versions of the value boxes essentially, where both
- 42:23Speaker 1: the values and the megas and I'll refer to values
- 42:27Speaker 1: as blasters as well. You'll hear us say that interchangeably.
- 42:30Speaker 1: You'll find those in retail shelves. I don't know if
- 42:32Speaker 1: I've necessarily seen a great spot to buy megas, but
- 42:35Speaker 1: values are going to be running you like forty bucks
- 42:37Speaker 1: a pop. And that's on twenty eight cards, So right
- 42:40Speaker 1: off the bat, that shows you how expensive this that is.
- 42:43Speaker 1: You're paying more than a dollar. It's like a dollar
- 42:48Speaker 1: forty ish per card on a retail environment, and that's
- 42:51Speaker 1: not guaranteeing you any sorts of hits at all. And honestly,
- 42:56Speaker 1: you're probably gonna get pretty well skunked on that based
- 43:00Speaker 1: on my findings over the years on retail, but you
- 43:03Speaker 1: will run into a good parallel or a good insert
- 43:06Speaker 1: every odd once in a while. The hobby boxes right
- 43:09Speaker 1: now are going for somewhere in the range of like
- 43:12Speaker 1: three twenty five, three fifty on the secondary market right now,
- 43:15Speaker 1: jumbos are hovering around the six hundred dollars mark. In
- 43:19Speaker 1: the hobby regulars, you're gonna get one auto in there.
- 43:22Speaker 1: In the jumbos, it's two autos. The other thing to
- 43:24Speaker 1: keep in mind between hobbies and jumbos and the values
- 43:29Speaker 1: and megas, which i'll split now into retail and hobby.
- 43:33Speaker 1: I guess I should have done that the other way around.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Hobby in retail, but Hobby is the hobby boxes and
- 43:39Speaker 1: jumbo boxes. Retail is value boxes and megaboxes. We've also
- 43:44Speaker 1: got splits in terms of what parallels are in each
- 43:47Speaker 1: product and inserts now, so that's a little bit bigger
- 43:51Speaker 1: wrinkled than we've had in the past, where there have
- 43:53Speaker 1: been certainly different parallels in the products, and maybe a
- 43:56Speaker 1: couple like one or two inserts that were especially retail only,
- 44:00Speaker 1: but it's really split. Now we're gonna get into that
- 44:03Speaker 1: when we do the inserts that there are certain inserts
- 44:06Speaker 1: that are only in retail and some that are only
- 44:08Speaker 1: in the hobby products. So, given all those parameters, brew
- 44:11Speaker 1: with all those prices, what product would you be looking
- 44:15Speaker 1: at if you want to rip any this wax?
- 44:18Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean for me, it's probably gonna be the
- 44:22Speaker 2: retail side of it, Mega or blasters, value boxes, and
- 44:26Speaker 2: the main reason being you are over paying for the
- 44:29Speaker 2: auto in the hobby side of things. And the one
- 44:34Speaker 2: thing we do know from all the years of tops
- 44:36Speaker 2: Chrome is the auto checklist is a minefield. It is
- 44:41Speaker 2: absolutely minefield. There's like ten or twelve guys that you
- 44:44Speaker 2: want from the auto checklist in like seventy three that
- 44:46Speaker 2: you don't, and you are hoping, hoping for the best,
- 44:50Speaker 2: and you are gonna pull a Mideral Liever guaranteed every
- 44:54Speaker 2: single time. And so I think you still have decent
- 45:00Speaker 2: odds at big hits in megas and the blasters, and
- 45:05Speaker 2: I think you're gonna get more insert value in parallel
- 45:09Speaker 2: value at that level, And so that's probably where I
- 45:13Speaker 2: would be leaning. I think you get the pleasure of
- 45:15Speaker 2: opening three or four megaboxes for the cost of a
- 45:19Speaker 2: hobby box type of thing, and I think you'll do
- 45:22Speaker 2: just fine.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think I'm with you there that usually
- 45:26Speaker 1: we do shade like going towards the Jumbo to make
- 45:29Speaker 1: sure that you get the hits. But just because of
- 45:33Speaker 1: that's a lot to be shelling out for this Tops
- 45:36Speaker 1: Chrome product and you're not getting a lot of volume,
- 45:38Speaker 1: and you're not getting a lot of like just being
- 45:41Speaker 1: able to rip lots of different inserts and things like
- 45:44Speaker 1: that the way that you are maybe when you're talking
- 45:46Speaker 1: about getting a Jumbo from a flagship or a Bowman product.
- 45:50Speaker 1: The other thing to keep in mind though, is Tops
- 45:53Speaker 1: did do one thing we've been suggesting over the years.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Obviously they're listening to this podcast and taking our feedback
- 45:58Speaker 1: to heart.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Is that they have peeled out some of the autos.
- 46:02Speaker 1: And it is especially like that tranch of guys that
- 46:04Speaker 1: we joke around about about, you know, being the middle
- 46:07Speaker 1: relievers that have like one game or maybe never make
- 46:11Speaker 1: it to the majors. They've moved a lot of those
- 46:13Speaker 1: into being retail only autos. That looks like so that
- 46:17Speaker 1: will help, I think from the hobby perspective, from the
- 46:21Speaker 1: hobby side certainly isn't going to kill you on the
- 46:24Speaker 1: retail side, but you still do have the opportunity, it
- 46:27Speaker 1: looks like to get some of the bigger autos, the
- 46:30Speaker 1: non retail autos still at relative similar rates to what
- 46:34Speaker 1: you did in the past. They are a little bit
- 46:36Speaker 1: more reduced. But part of that is also just because
- 46:39Speaker 1: of the volume here, because we were talking about it's
- 46:41Speaker 1: a lengthy checklist on both the three hundred cards set
- 46:45Speaker 1: and all the different parallels that we're going to get into,
- 46:48Speaker 1: but the volume of inserts when you kind of combine
- 46:51Speaker 1: that all together. We haven't gotten the full like print
- 46:53Speaker 1: run calculus from whatever math nerds and geniuses that hang
- 46:57Speaker 1: out on Reddit to be able to figure that out.
- 46:59Speaker 3: For me, that hasn't come out yet, but it is
- 47:02Speaker 3: going to.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Be a monumental print run because I will say, let's
- 47:08Speaker 1: get into it because there are some huge chases in
- 47:12Speaker 1: this product compared to what we've seen over the past
- 47:14Speaker 1: few years. Let's start off the bat. We have the
- 47:17Speaker 1: gold logoman cards again, so if you're not familiar with
- 47:20Speaker 1: this is they have the gold Batter MLB logo on
- 47:24Speaker 1: the back of the awards winners throughout the year. They
- 47:28Speaker 1: take those they're on field used, put them in a card,
- 47:31Speaker 1: make them very short printed. Usually one of one's autographed.
- 47:35Speaker 1: That's gonna honestly, the hit of this probably entire product
- 47:39Speaker 1: is there's a one of one back to back MVP
- 47:41Speaker 1: years for Otani twenty four and twenty five. He has
- 47:46Speaker 1: signed the top of it in his regular auto and
- 47:49Speaker 1: then in the bottom of it in his Kangi auto.
- 47:51Speaker 1: So is that the hit of the entire product for
- 47:55Speaker 1: you this year?
- 47:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it has to be not only that
- 47:58Speaker 2: they took patches from games they need homeward to both games.
- 48:03Speaker 2: One he had two homers in it, and so they
- 48:06Speaker 2: took these patches from the September seventh, twenty twenty five game,
- 48:12Speaker 2: and actually earlier this year April twelve, twenty twenty six,
- 48:15Speaker 2: so it's actually twenty five to twenty six where they
- 48:17Speaker 2: actually took those patches from. And so at least that's
- 48:21Speaker 2: what they say. But then on the card it actually
- 48:23Speaker 2: says twenty four and twenty five MVP, so we'll see.
- 48:28Speaker 2: That's what Beckett says, is they have the dates potentially
- 48:32Speaker 2: different than the card, so that's a little mystery out there,
- 48:36Speaker 2: But yeah, we know how Rare Otani's kanji autographed is.
- 48:41Speaker 2: People want that so badly, but they have it on
- 48:44Speaker 2: a duel one of one gold logo Man from MVP
- 48:49Speaker 2: seasons and then Homer games Man that They're like, this
- 48:52Speaker 2: is a potentially a million dollar card and I don't
- 48:56Speaker 2: think that's an under cell, and so I think it's
- 48:59Speaker 2: a great, great chase and this is gonna be the
- 49:05Speaker 2: one that everybody is trying to get.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Yeah, if I had to make one tweak to it,
- 49:09Speaker 1: I would put one of them with the picture of
- 49:12Speaker 1: Otani pitching, like I don't know how you missed that,
- 49:16Speaker 1: where the one on the photo on the top is
- 49:18Speaker 1: him in the batter's box and then the one on
- 49:20Speaker 1: the bottom is him it looks like on the bases
- 49:23Speaker 1: and kind of like looking over his shoulder. If they
- 49:25Speaker 1: made that a pitching photo, like unstoppable, that like this
- 49:29Speaker 1: becomes an all time card. It already is, but yeah,
- 49:32Speaker 1: they could have pushed it to that next level. This
- 49:35Speaker 1: one will be in the rasbell post, so check it
- 49:37Speaker 1: out there. The other major hits that we got, they
- 49:41Speaker 1: stuck this in last year where I don't think it
- 49:44Speaker 1: was really well publicized, or at least we didn't talk
- 49:46Speaker 1: about it, but they've been doing these Cooperstown call cards
- 49:52Speaker 1: where the new inductees from the Hall of Fame get
- 49:55Speaker 1: a card in an insert and last year they only
- 49:59Speaker 1: ran blues of the new Hall of Famers, and they're
- 50:02Speaker 1: doing it this year where the new Hall of Famers
- 50:04Speaker 1: only get blues, but last year's get greens, and they're
- 50:08Speaker 1: running it down from there. So if you want the
- 50:10Speaker 1: full rainbow of this card set, you have to collect
- 50:13Speaker 1: over six years, starting from blue, green, gold, orange, black,
- 50:19Speaker 1: red super Fractor, so you have to go through the
- 50:22Speaker 1: entire six year progression to be able to get all them.
- 50:26Speaker 1: It is cool, it's a little gimmicky for me because also,
- 50:29Speaker 1: like you're talking about cards of retired players, which just
- 50:32Speaker 1: normally don't do well as well as like players that
- 50:36Speaker 1: are active unless you're talking on King Griffy Junior Auto,
- 50:38Speaker 1: then the rules do I apply? But what's your thought here,
- 50:42Speaker 1: because I know you're also not a huge fan of
- 50:44Speaker 1: like guy getting cards of guys who are retired and
- 50:48Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame.
- 50:48Speaker 3: But does the gimmick work for you?
- 50:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a big fan of cards from your playing
- 50:55Speaker 2: days and not the legends on current I want to
- 50:59Speaker 2: call wax not wax but current modern cards and so
- 51:04Speaker 2: not only that, but the design is pretty rough, like
- 51:06Speaker 2: is not a is it boring design? It feels like
- 51:09Speaker 2: tops gallery or something like that. It's just it's it's
- 51:12Speaker 2: not great. And then to say it's like if you
- 51:14Speaker 2: go over the seven year period, like if it's your PC, guy,
- 51:17Speaker 2: I could see having some fun over the years, just
- 51:20Speaker 2: trying to slowly collect it every year. But it's it's
- 51:23Speaker 2: like it's destined for heartbreak at the end of it,
- 51:27Speaker 2: because you know, there's multiple folks trying to go after
- 51:29Speaker 2: this rainbow and there's only one one card at the
- 51:32Speaker 2: end of the rainbow type of thing, and uh, waiting
- 51:36Speaker 2: seven years. Man, that's that's a lot. That's asking a
- 51:39Speaker 2: lot from collectors.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's also like it it creates like it could
- 51:44Speaker 1: create friction within the hobby community because usually when you're
- 51:46Speaker 1: talking about like the level of collectors where you have
- 51:51Speaker 1: the same PCs and they're big guys, those guys know
- 51:54Speaker 1: each other like they cross paths, chasing for the same
- 51:57Speaker 1: of fives of ones and trying to build rainbows on
- 52:01Speaker 1: top of each other and stuff, and we'll just kind
- 52:03Speaker 1: of have a dialogue or a rivalry, and so it
- 52:06Speaker 1: feels like you're really opening everybody up for that, especially
- 52:10Speaker 1: you know we're going to be getting towards the end
- 52:12Speaker 1: of the Ichiro one in twenty twenty nine and twenty thirty.
- 52:18Speaker 3: They're setting this up well.
- 52:19Speaker 1: I think for Poohols coming through is a big one,
- 52:21Speaker 1: and Trout eventually, and those guys have big PC collectors
- 52:25Speaker 1: out there, so it's going to be fascinating to see
- 52:28Speaker 1: how those communities get along as any of them are
- 52:32Speaker 1: maybe chasing this rainbow over multiple years. The other big
- 52:36Speaker 1: hits that we have, we talked about this when it
- 52:39Speaker 1: came out a few weeks ago. The Minions short prints
- 52:42Speaker 1: there are they're just as popular as I thought they're
- 52:45Speaker 1: going to be. Looks like they're printed to one hundred.
- 52:47Speaker 1: There's only four of them, Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Paul Skenes,
- 52:51Speaker 1: and Roman Anthony. And if you do pull one of these,
- 52:55Speaker 1: do not think it's a cheap ot gimmick card. It
- 52:59Speaker 1: looks like I mean, they're gonna be worth thousands of dollars.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I think because of the cross functional nature of this
- 53:05Speaker 1: collecting on top of like the the generation that was
- 53:10Speaker 1: like born into the Minions is starting to come into
- 53:12Speaker 1: their like mid to late twenties, I think, so they're
- 53:15Speaker 1: starting to get some money and like collect this kind
- 53:18Speaker 1: of stuff, So they're starting to really get into it
- 53:20Speaker 1: as well. As there's a cross sports function in terms
- 53:24Speaker 1: of like the way that these are being collected and produced.
- 53:27Speaker 1: So there's gonna be NBA ones and NFL one so
- 53:31Speaker 1: collectors across all sports are gonna want Minions cards.
- 53:35Speaker 3: And they're hilarious.
- 53:36Speaker 1: I like these, I think they're great, but yeah, if
- 53:39Speaker 1: you do pull one, it is one of the bigger
- 53:41Speaker 1: hits of the entire product. You're sitting on a cool
- 53:44Speaker 1: couple thousand dollars, especially if it's a Judge one. I
- 53:46Speaker 1: think the Judge one's going to be the most collectible.
- 53:49Speaker 1: It's kind of got the best photo on it too.
- 53:51Speaker 1: So any new thoughts on these Minions cards now that
- 53:54Speaker 1: you're seeing the prices of them on eBay?
- 53:57Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, what's funny like that there's one auction right
- 54:00Speaker 2: now for over one thousand dollars with four days left,
- 54:03Speaker 2: but there's actually three that sold all kind of like
- 54:06Speaker 2: best offer at thirteen hundred and so they clearly went
- 54:08Speaker 2: for a little bit less than that, and everything else
- 54:11Speaker 2: listed is three thousand or better. And so I think
- 54:14Speaker 2: people actually, to your point, sold low on these and
- 54:17Speaker 2: thought they got like a crazy deal, like they were
- 54:19Speaker 2: ripping these get him before released day. Man, I've just
- 54:23Speaker 2: made bank with this. I don't think they realized how
- 54:26Speaker 2: rare these things are and they are going to go
- 54:30Speaker 2: for crazy dollar amounts. And yeah, they're they're all fun.
- 54:34Speaker 2: The schemes is a cool card. You know, it's the Sodo. Honestly,
- 54:39Speaker 2: I think the Sodo might be the one to have
- 54:41Speaker 2: because we got the Sodo shuffle going on, and it's
- 54:44Speaker 2: so like they're funny, they're gimmicky. Would I ever keep
- 54:48Speaker 2: one of these? Now? Would would not, but I would
- 54:51Speaker 2: gladly cash it him for a good two three thousand dollars.
- 54:56Speaker 2: And I do think there's there's going to be a story.
- 54:58Speaker 2: There's going to be a story where somebody pulls one
- 55:01Speaker 2: of these and gives it to a kid, doesn't realize it.
- 55:03Speaker 2: They have type of thing, and there's gonna be drama.
- 55:06Speaker 2: Tops was just setting us up.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I mean we still got more hits to cover,
- 55:13Speaker 1: like huge chase cards. We've got the MVP buybacks. They're
- 55:17Speaker 1: back again. So that is both the reinsertion of last
- 55:21Speaker 1: year's buybacks from twenty twenty five of those Judge Judges
- 55:24Speaker 1: and Otani's where they've been re stamped and redistributed. Some
- 55:27Speaker 1: of them will be autographed. Those will be huge chase cards.
- 55:30Speaker 1: They always are. Now what's gonna make this year fascinating
- 55:33Speaker 1: is I don't know if we've got great leaders in
- 55:35Speaker 1: the clubhouse for the MVP buybacks. So if you're not
- 55:39Speaker 1: familiar with this, what this program is or was, is
- 55:43Speaker 1: that a couple of years ago, Tops absolutely botched the
- 55:46Speaker 1: rollout of the TOPS Chrome product. To make up for it,
- 55:50Speaker 1: they put out a program where they were giving redemptions
- 55:53Speaker 1: for the base all the way through the lowest numbered
- 55:58Speaker 1: cards in the rainbow of the the MVPs from that year,
- 56:01Speaker 1: where you know, you could take it into your local
- 56:03Speaker 1: hobby shop just exchange it straight up for cash essentially
- 56:07Speaker 1: in terms of products back, and it's been a big
- 56:10Speaker 1: winner from there. Tops collected the cards, took them out
- 56:13Speaker 1: of print, and then has put a stamp on them
- 56:16Speaker 1: re released them into the TOPS Chrome cards. So this year,
- 56:20Speaker 1: like I said, it's gonna be obviously Otani is gonna
- 56:23Speaker 1: be a big one on the NL side, but on
- 56:25Speaker 1: the AL side, well, actually, I mean I should mention
- 56:28Speaker 1: PCA too.
- 56:29Speaker 3: He just pulled the.
- 56:30Speaker 1: War lead in the NL and major leagues overall, so
- 56:33Speaker 1: he'll be right there in the NL, but it's pretty
- 56:35Speaker 1: open in the AL that it's gonna come down the stretch.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I think this is gonna be fun, though, because unlike
- 56:41Speaker 1: the past couple of years where we knew upon release
- 56:43Speaker 1: like who the MVP was going to be, this year
- 56:47Speaker 1: there's a little bit more intrigue. So there's gonna be
- 56:49Speaker 1: a little bit more fun in terms of trying to
- 56:51Speaker 1: figure out the market over the next month or so
- 56:54Speaker 1: and then really go a whole hog on one of
- 56:56Speaker 1: the MVP candidates on the AL.
- 56:58Speaker 3: So what do you think. Are you looking forward to
- 57:01Speaker 3: a real MVP buyback chase this year?
- 57:04Speaker 2: I want to say yes, but I think you're forgetting
- 57:06Speaker 2: that Ordn Alvarez has been so good that Vegas already
- 57:12Speaker 2: has n't it like a a negative to one fifty
- 57:17Speaker 2: one sixty with Bobby Witt being the second front runner
- 57:22Speaker 2: for MVP, and then Caman Yiero and Ben Rice and
- 57:25Speaker 2: so I agree with you. It feels like it should
- 57:28Speaker 2: be more wide open, but it's it's like Alvarez has
- 57:31Speaker 2: put himself in a tier kind of by himself right now,
- 57:35Speaker 2: and the market is already kind of there, Like his
- 57:37Speaker 2: base cards are being listed for like fifteen bucks from
- 57:39Speaker 2: top scrome already, and then the next you can tell
- 57:42Speaker 2: like the canon yaros when rices and stuff like aren't
- 57:45Speaker 2: getting that attention. So the hobby's already kind of decided
- 57:47Speaker 2: that this is gonna be yourn Vegas says, that's who
- 57:50Speaker 2: they think it's going to be. I don't think it's
- 57:52Speaker 2: as locked in as that that sounds to your point,
- 57:56Speaker 2: ord On, like if there's anybody that can watch this
- 57:59Speaker 2: on the way in, it could be word On stubbing
- 58:01Speaker 2: his toe out of the locker room type of thing.
- 58:03Speaker 2: So like, this is far from far from over. But
- 58:07Speaker 2: the Bobby with injury I think, really kind of opened
- 58:10Speaker 2: that up. Open the door show, hey, Like we might
- 58:12Speaker 2: as well just call this the show. Hey, buy back
- 58:15Speaker 2: at this point in the mL.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Peter Armstrong has a good chance at
- 58:20Speaker 1: this point, but let's see if he can keep it up.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Maybe some dark horses, if you're looking for some dark
- 58:25Speaker 1: horses in the al I'm just looking at the Fangraff's
- 58:28Speaker 1: War leader board. Third in the al right now is
- 58:31Speaker 1: Dylan Dingler. I don't it could happen, but who knows.
- 58:36Speaker 2: I think homeward again tonight, so yeah, I.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Mean the defense is amazing, like he might outwoar rd On,
- 58:42Speaker 1: but it'll be a tough sell I think for MVP voters.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Junior Cam and Arrow's right there. Ben Rice is a
- 58:48Speaker 1: pretty good dark horse candidate. Launched his thirtieth Homer today
- 58:52Speaker 1: and Wilson Contrares is up there too, So especially if
- 58:55Speaker 1: the Red Sox today, hot might be a couple of cheap.
- 58:58Speaker 3: Guys to chase.
- 59:00Speaker 1: One last chase card to discuss, So if you're counting
- 59:03Speaker 1: at home, that is five bullet points of chase cards.
- 59:05Speaker 1: Usually we barely have like one R two, So that
- 59:08Speaker 1: shows you how loaded tops Chrome is. Jerry Seinfeld. He's
- 59:11Speaker 1: got autographs again in this product, especially a Chrome Superfractor
- 59:16Speaker 1: that's going to be another big chase card. So just
- 59:18Speaker 1: throwing that out there after he's been in Flagship recently.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Let's get into the set itself. So, like I said,
- 59:24Speaker 1: it's a three hundred card set, and I believe I
- 59:28Speaker 1: counted properly, and this is also a situation where it's
- 59:31Speaker 1: kind of a moving target in terms of the number
- 59:33Speaker 1: of parallels, but I think it's fifty parallels, and that
- 59:36Speaker 1: is a mix between hobby and retail, and I'm not
- 59:40Speaker 1: even counting there's other variations that you can consider, but
- 59:44Speaker 1: these variations are not for every single card out there
- 59:47Speaker 1: that's a limited set. Usually stuck with the Stars and
- 59:51Speaker 1: the rookies are lightboards, image variation, short prints and super
- 59:55Speaker 1: short prints and an Awards Winners variations, which obviously is
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: the Rookie of the Year, MVP CY Young Winners from
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: the previous year. Those will be your different variations on
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: top of the other fifty I should also I shouldn't
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: have glossed over probably for those rookies, because that's another
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: reason the hype on this product is just otherworldly right now.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I mean, this is I didn't even like pick out
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: all of the rookies, but here's the list of guys
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: that I was when I was skinning through the list
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: are in this product and are like pretty solid rookie
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: cards to keep stash away and even kind of like
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: will move for some money right now in the market.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: You're looking at Munatakamarakami, Jacob Missirowski, Connor Griffin, Kevin McGonagall,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: JJ weatherhol Cam Schlitzler, Colson Montgomery, Jack Kaglion, Roman, Anthony
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Nolan McLain, Bryce Aldrich, Samuel Basil, Carter Jensen, Trey Ya Savage,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Carson Bench, Peyton, Tolly, Parker, Massik, Chase the latter. They're
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: all in this set that like they are not holding
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: anything back for Top's Chrome update this year, to have
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: all of those big rookies between griff and McGonagall and
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Weatherholt who haven't been in series one, series two, and
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: then just the the miz Man. The Miz is on
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: such a tear. He's maybe like the hottest name in
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: the hobby behind like Otani right now and maybe cond
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: of Griffin, but like miss cards are doing work out
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: there right now in the field, and he's got a
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: whole suite of autographs and everything else in this product.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: I've been setting it up for you, letting you catch
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: your breath. You ready for those fifty variations. If you're
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: looking to do a miss Rainbow out.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: There, I'm not ready, but we're gonna try it. I
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: was actually just looking at the rookies that you missed
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: because the list goes on Chase, Chase Burns. You didn't
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: say like Chase, Yeah, there's this is loaded from a workie.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: I know, I kind of poop pooed on the autographs earlier,
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: which I'm going to stand behind looking at the retail
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: autograph list, But man, this this one, like this is
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: one of those products you can see people holding sealed
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: for years and then coming back and saying, like the
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: value in this thing because you end up with a
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Hall of Famer or something like that out of it,
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: It would be incredible.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: But I will say, like that said with that point,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: that is a good point because when we were talking
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: about the prices of the boxes earlier, those aren't gonna
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: come down anytime soon. Usually those crash pretty quick on chrome.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: But because of this loaded checklist of rookies, I don't
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: people are gonna stuff this stuff away and like want
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: to sit on it, especially given what some of the
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: sealed products of Otani rookie cards are going for. Now
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: that list the number of rolls of the dice that
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: you get of like one of them being an absolute
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: superstar incredible?
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: All right, ready for this, I am I am all right, Well,
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: this is gonna be a little fun because we also
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: have all the variations. Like you said, not all these
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: coming all products. So I'm gonna do my best to
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: give you give you the the insight here, but your
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: base set parallels. We have baseball seams refractor if you've
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: seen that one actually looks pretty cool. Red color match
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: cards is great. That's an a value boxes one out
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: of eight packs. There geometric refractors coming from Delight negative
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: refractors actually a much more rare than people realize. Those
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: are coming out of values in three hundred and seventy three,
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: but also comes across every other product. Prison refractors coming
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: out of Hobby, ray waves coming out of value, red, white,
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: and blue refractors coming out of value. You have your
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: just standard refractors across all the products. You got your
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: tops refractor tops, refractor blue coming out straight out of
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: the Fanatics products. Only wave refractors coming from Jumbos X
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: fractors coming from Megas as usual. Then we finally get
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: into the number of cards. So we've got our pink
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: refractors out of two fifty, Aqua refractors out of one
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: ninety nine. Those are across all products. Then you have your
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: Aqua ray wave refractors out of value boxes, Aqua X
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: fractors out of one ninety nine out of megas blue
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: refractors coming out of one to fifty, blue ray waver
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: refractors on one fifty, blue wave refractions on one fifty,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: and X blue X fractors out of one fifty. They
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: sprinkle those across all the different products as well. Then
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: you have your greens out of ninety nine for your refractor, geometric,
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: ray wave, wave and X fractors. You have your seventy
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: fifth anniversary refractors out of seventy five across all your products,
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Purple refractors out of seventy five, the purple geometric, ray wave,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: wave and extractors all out of seventy five. Then you
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: get into your golds gold refractors, true gold out of fifty,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: gold geometrics, gold ray wave, gold wave and gold extractors
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: also out of fifty. You have a white refractor coming
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: across all your products out of thirty. So that's a
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: twist free you this time around. I don't recall that
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: one in the past, but where we got.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: It, Yeah, that was in last year.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: We call those, okay, I just don't recall that. We'll
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: call it the white whale for everybody else out there,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: but orange refractors out of twenty five, the geometric ray
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: wave wave and extractors all out of twenty five. Then
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: you have your black out of tens or out of
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: fifty if you want to look at it that way,
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: because there's five different variations black refractors out of ten,
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: geometric ray wave wave and X fractors. You have your
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: reds out of five. That's your pure refractor, your geometric
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: end wave. Then you have your frozen fractors still in
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: the the chrome products out of negative five. Uh so
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: there's we're missing five of those currently. And then you
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: have a sneaky tide refractors out of two. That's an
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: interesting one to tell me. Was that in there last
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: year and I'm forgetting this as well as TIDI out
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: of two in there. I don't recall.
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: Tide variation, but it wasn't that.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Low, I don't think.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: So.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Then we finished up with our usual ur printing plates,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: all four of those, and then the super fractor one
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: of one's just to give you an idea of print
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: run if we really want to work things back. Your
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: super fractors out of your values one out of one
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: hundred and fifty five thousand, six hundred and thirty four.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: I do also want to understand how they do these
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: odds across four products when you have one card, and
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: how there's odds for your Mega Delight, Hobby, Jumbo and
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: value because you can only get in one. How can
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: you have odds across all five? That's just me. There's
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: your fifty parallels.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: Yeah, fifty ish because I'm also like, I didn't, I
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: just got because I'm looking at like different lists and
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: different ones have different refractors, because I think we keep
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: uncovering more refractors as the day goes on, and especially like, yeah.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: So we will see what the entire rainbow is. Like,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: I don't think it's possible to even do a rainbow nowadays.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: So if you're a rainbow chaser, try to like find
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: one maybe like groove to stick in in terms of
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: like ray waves or geometrics or just plain color that
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: like that's probably the best way to play.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: You could give it a shot, but that way lies badness,
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: my friend.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: I honestly think you're better off just doing a full
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: set of three hundred cards of refractors or extractors or
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: something like that. I think that's probably a better way
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: to go at this point than trying to do the
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: rainbow of any player.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that would be more fun and
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: more enjoyable anyway, to be able to tuck away something
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: like that, especially if you tucked away like a whole
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: refractor set of this set with these rookies. Ooh, Buddy's
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: that's a big one to have in your collection. Okay, well,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: let's get into some of the hits. Let's get into
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: those autographs that we've got. Not really any memorabilia patch
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: cards here in tops Chrome autographs of the name of
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the game. Really the only relic cards are those Goldman
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Cold Logo Man Auto patch autos, so you're not looking
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: at anything else what you will be looking for in
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: terms of the autos now these there is like a
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: split here, i'd say, in terms of tops Chrome, where
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: you have some autographs that are pretty much like that
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: card only comes in the autograph design, and then you've
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: got another kind of entire track of cards where you
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: just have the inserts and there's an auto on it.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: So I think the ones that people prefer are the
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: ones that obviously come in autos only, but the ones
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: that are inserts and autos are extremely hard to hit,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: so they're very collectible and they can look pretty cool
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: to varying on what design of the insert it is,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: so on the pretty much auto's only design. What you're
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: looking at are those chrome rooky autos that you're talking about.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: You're gonna have the different list between hobby and retail,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: so keep that in mind as you're ripping out there.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: They do have a much more extensive it feels like
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: Legends auto lists, where you know, this will be on
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: the base tops chrome design, but it'll have a throwback
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: player they've also incorporated usually they don't do this a lot,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: but they've also incorporated just other active players that are
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: in the auto list, and so that will give a
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: little bit more of a boost to this. I think overall,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: you've also got some dual autos of You've got World
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Series Champions autos of the Dodgers, You've got nineteen ninety
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: one thirty fifth Anniversary design autos. So that's you know,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: a little bit more of the crossover though. Then two
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: more exclusive kind of autos.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: One is ink.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Strokes, which actually it's well designed I will give them
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: credit for this that it it has a feel of
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: like a much more high end product, like a Tier
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: one or museum collection or black chrome. If you go
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: to the post in Raswall, I found there's one name
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: that stands out from the checklist of the the ink
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: strokes that is maybe worse than all the others. It's
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: a Jake Mangum in the Devil Rays in the rays
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: like in Jersey, not even the buyer Jersey as he's
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: broken out.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: It's kind of funny.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: Because it's a loaded list in terms of ink strokes.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: It's lots of stars, lots of legends, and then Jake Mangum.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: So that's a funny one. Somebody's trying to sell it
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: for two hundred bucks on eBay. Good luck to them.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: You've also got the seventy fifth anniversary Diamond autos and
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: chromographs is back.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: Those are going to be pretty popular.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: In terms of the inserts, it looks like you got
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: autos of future stars, perspectives, radiating Rookies, numbers, Live Live Forever,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: and the Cooper's Town calls.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: So what stands out here for you in terms of
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: the autographs.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there's a few that stand out. Like
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: you said in strokes, looks pretty pretty cool. Chromographs, I
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: believe if I was looking correct, he out of ten chromographs.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Those have been around for a number of years, So
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: not just out of ten. There's Oriente out of twenty five,
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Black out of ten, Red out of five, the super fractors,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: the chromographs. But a strong checklist and those really cool cards.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: But probably what stutts out to me the most is perspectives.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: And to say that about the insert sales card, I
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: absolutely love perspectives. It's such a unique thing. And the
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: concept of perspectives is it's a different photo angle of
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: the player, and so think like maybe this is our
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: stadium club lovers coming out to a degree, but it's
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: it's generally a photo of a player from like a
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: bird's eye view or maybe from the field level looking up,
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: and it's got their name kind of uh like super
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: imposed across the field, giving you like a different perspective.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: And so those cars just absolutely pop and uh it,
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: they're they're very cool. So seeing those with autos I
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: think are going to be really really collectible. I think
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: the other pieces you're gonna get is those legend autos
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: and the World Series champions. I think you mentioned the
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: World Series Champion being all Dodgers when I was looking
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: at the checklist. It's not okay, it is across the board,
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: and so I need to look up some of these,
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: but it is like I'm just gonna read some random
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: names from the checklist. Alex Gordon, Andy Pettitt, Anthony Rizzo,
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Bly Levin, Dustin Pedroia uh Pad Rodriguez, Marion Rivera, Ozzy Smith,
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: Paul O'Neil, Steve Carlton, Tim Salmon, Mark Burley, Like it's
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: all World Series Champions, and like I said, I need
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: to find some of the cards to look at to
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: see if there's a certain reason that these guys got picked,
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: or if it's just we went you know, last twenty
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: World Series and or thirty three or thirty three cards
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: and just pick somebody out for that. But I think
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: that's going to be a cool one as well.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, there is also an all Dodgers twenty twenty five
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: World Series Champion autograph checklist.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: Too, sooth.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's both just kind of speaks to how
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: many different sets and subsets there are in this But yeah,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I think we'll get into it a little bit on
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: the insert side too, but the perspectives really pop. The
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: other thing that I do want to highlight too is
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: it's buried in the Chrome Legend autographs, but you do
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: have a Barry Bonds auto in there. I don't know
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: if Barry Bond's ever actually signed an on card TOPS
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Chrome designed autograph back in the day, and it's kind
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: of something that's gotten lost in the shuffle at twenty
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: twenty six that Barry Bonds came back to Tops and
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: has been signing for Tops. But that that's also going
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: to be a huge chase because we haven't had Barry
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: Bonds signing Tops Chrome in forever, probably thirty ish years
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: or so, so that's going to.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: Be a huge chase within there. And I'm scanning through.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: The other thing is like you always kind of have
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: to scan through the Legends one to see if there's
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: anybody who's like passed in between like signing and being released,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: and I don't think we have anybody, so nothing that
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: kind of falls into that Where Ricky Henderson that kind
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: of happened a little bit with Update Chrome I think
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: coming out a couple of years ago, where it was
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: certainly the last set of cards that he was probably
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: signing on cards. So yeah, we've got lots of lots
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: and lots of autos. It's an extensive checklist enough that
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: they were able to stuff retail only one.
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: So something to keep in mind.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Let's get to those inserts because it's a lot. Like
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: I said, if you've gone to the raswall post and
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: looked at all the cards there, there are dozens of
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: inserts that I've laid out, so you've ran through all
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: the list. So I'll take all these inserts and try
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: to run through. I did my best to split what
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: was new and what is kind of like a returning
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: and kind of standard portion of TOPS.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: So I will.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Start first with the new, take a little bit of
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: a break to see which one of those really intrigue you,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: and then we'll get into the returning.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: And old ones.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: So from the new side, we have one called Wrecking Crew. Now,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: this is a part of the actual nineteen ninety six
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: TOPS Chrome release. It is actually the thirtieth year of
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: TOPS Chrome, which is something they didn't really do. I
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: think a great job of highlighting, which is strange. But
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: that is an original insert design from ninety six. They
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: brought it back now for twenty twenty six.
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: It's great. I love it.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: It's super nineties and it's just like so perfectly shiny.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: You've also got Past a Present, which is another throwback
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: to two thousand and one. And what you have there
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: is it's going to be one team. For example, the
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: one that's really in the PROB materials is of Mookie
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Betts and Jackie Robinson, and they're just on the same card,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: you know, harkening the through lines of teams and their
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: past history. You've got Diamond Moments, which is just a
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: card that highlights the moment. It's nothing really too fancy.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: I think it's gonna especially pop in the parallel colors.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: You'll see a picture of a super refractor of that
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: on the tops site and on our rasball post Static Noise.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: This one's actually a retail only super short print. It's
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: got like it's trying to emulate static from a TV set,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: which I mean half of the people in like that
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: exist in the world don't even know that what I'm
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: talking about with that anymore. But like it's little lines
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: on the card with the refractor pattern. I think it
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: is going to be a pretty cool insert, and it
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: seems to be selling pretty well on eBay, a little
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: bit of like a crossover between the like Spotlight from
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: Bowman as well as the ones that involved like the
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: insides of the rocks. You've got Perspectives, which you talked about.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: It's back after a ten year break, wildly popular, moving
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: very well on eBay right now. We have Shadow Etch
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: as well too, which is it's it's a geometric kind
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: of X design in the background. Looks like it's almost
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: like a tops gallery of your or something in terms
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: of like a separate set. Pretty clean, pretty nice. We
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: have wild Style, which is, let's just puke up a
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Nickelodeon gut set up onto a card like it's just
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: in pure nineties design. Lots of geometric patterns.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Bowmen's best called Monster cards. Back on that one, yes, exactly.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: And then the other new one that we have is
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Chrome Rivals. And this is what I was talking about,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: where they've really.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: Split the the.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Retail and the hobby inserts, where the home cards will
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: only be in hobbies and jumbo boxes in the away
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: cards are only in retail boxes, and they kind of
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: line up together. So if you're on the Raspball post,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: you'll see a picture of Sayas and Zuki and Christian
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Yelich kind of going face to face. But the design
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: works when you line up the cards, that creates one
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: card the way, kind of like Triumvirance where it has
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: worked in stadium clubs. So you're gonna it's just a
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: little twist to get that little set up together if
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: you want the entire set. So what stands out to
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: you here from these newer inserts.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I already exposed my preference for perspectives,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: won't go back there. I do think Wrecking Crew is
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: a good one. It harkens back to your point in
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: the nineties, the which one was it? The not static
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: noise was was was? It was an interesting kind of
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: kind of views as you look at it as a
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: as a kind of a cool card, but probably not
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: the one that you're gonna want to jump on all
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: the time. And then the past to present, uh, is
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: kind of interesting one. But I think it is gonna
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: have a little gimmicky just depending on the players that
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: that are are used. Your shadow atch might be the
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: other kind of dark horses. Maybe not the the right
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: term for it. It is a case hit is considered
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: a case hit within the within the product and It
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: is a really kind of clean design that that I
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: really like. It's kind of kind of like a X
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: behind that player and a nice little rectangular border, So
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: very clean card. But it's it's one of those that
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: it's almost basic enough. I think people are gonna miss that.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: It is a case hit and a very very rare card,
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: so I think that's gonna be a sneaky one for
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: folks as well as as a shadow atch Wild Style.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Like I said, you said, that one's just crazy. It's
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: out there. It almost doesn't fit the rest of them.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: But overall with these new ones, I know we've kind
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: of been rough on Tops. They did a pretty gosh
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: on good job here, and even the ones that are cheaper,
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: like the Chrome Rival things like that Past to Present,
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: they're still pretty good cards. And there's doesn't seem to
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: really be a full clunker anywhere in here. Even the
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Wild Style, it's just so far out there that it
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: kind of works. So I'm giving some kudos to Tops
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: on the on the new inserts of they're bringing. They
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: did a pretty part good job this time.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: Yeah, they did.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: It feels like they really kind of loaded it all
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: up into this set, which I mean I it also
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: just kind of speaks to they're also trying to flash it,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I think, in front of your eyes to let you
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: overlook like how big the base print run is. Because
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: to be able to get all these inserts in all
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: the products across the board, you've got to have enough
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: bass cards to spread them out. So something to keep
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: in mind where like, yeah, it is gonna be cool
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: and it's gonna be flashy to hit these inserts a
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: lot of them. Also, unless they're the case hits are
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: not going to hold their value very well. So if
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: you do flip them open and you see and especially
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I think like Chrome rivals are. Let's get into some
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: of the returning ones where I think this is really
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: going to apply, you know. The one that I'm especially
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: thinking of is the Return of Future Stars. It is
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: a set that's in every tops Chrome every year in
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Tops Chrome. People sell it for a decent amount of
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: money within the first week or two while it's released,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: and they totally bottom out when people realize like this
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: thing is essentially like Stars and MLB from Flagship, where
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: there's tons and tons of Future Stars. The other one
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: that's in that vein is nineteen ninety one thirty fifth anniversary,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: where especially like the chrome Bojo ones were much rarer
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: when they were in Flagship. Now it's just a standard
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: refractor insert. So a cool card, but not going to
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: be the most valuable when out there other returners, we
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: have World Series at Night. This was actually new last year.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: We were disappointed last year. I'm still disappointed in it.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: It looks like you've like it's crossing like the grid
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: of a city against the player's face, and it's in
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: black and white, and it just like it makes their
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: face all craggy, and it's it's not the greatest design
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: fanatical which used to be in Flagship as an insert,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: it's got a little bit of like an Opening Day
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: vibe to it, red, white and blue, just kind of
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: a cool shot of whatever the player is that's fanatical
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: on it. You've also got helix returning, where you've got
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: the color variations in the backgrounds. I will say that
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: in this set it seems like they're leaning a little
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: bit more into trying to hit some of the older
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: stars with helix that you know obviously weren't included in
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: prior ones. So you know you've got Willie May's Roberto
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Clemente Hank Aaron Sandy Kofax in this set, which I
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: think are going to be very popular. You've got the
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: World Series Champions inserts, You've got Ultra Violet inserts, which
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: I do want to get to your take right away
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: on this one because they changed it. The past couple
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: of years, the Ultra Violet set has been like sixties
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: groovy and cartoony and like all these bright colors, and
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I think the cartoon motifs where they actually had like
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: car tuned renderings of the players where not in like
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: a exaggerated way, it's just like they were. It creates
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: some funny looking faces, I think, especially when you would
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: like it's akin to like when you're watching NFL games
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: on Fox and they've got those goofy like cartoon if
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: I players. That's what it is, and that's what it
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: was on Ultra Violet. Now they've changed it into like
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: a kind of dark and stormy, lots of just rushes
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: and kind of an anime sort of feel almost to
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: it too.
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: What's your take here?
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Because I liked the old Ultra Violet and them breaking
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: up that pattern, I think it's gonna not sit quite
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: as right with the Hobby when those ultra violets were popular.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, well I actually didn't really care for the whole ultraviolet,
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: so I think it's actually a win for me. That said,
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: it's if I combine some things. It's like cosmic Chrome
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: plus Finest and AI put together, Like is kind of
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: like what went on here, Like they they just tried
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: to apply too many things to it. You've got multiple
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: views of the player. There's just so many lines and
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: squiggles and borders and numbers and like, there's just a
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: lot of a lot going on to it. So it
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: is interesting. Again, this is like a very rare card,
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: so that you know they're going to go for a lot.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: It's just I don't quite get there as far as
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: what they were trying to do. It feels like they
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: took some good designs from across the products and they
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: kind of tried to work them together and they didn't
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: quite quite quite flow. So I'm okay that they've gone
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: away from the old version, but I'm not sure I
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: love the new version either.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Yeah, and they've also actually I should have put this
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: one into the new We've got Hobby Masters, which the
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: actual like design of.
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: It is.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: Certainly new. I think they've had Hobby Masters of the years.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: It kind of comes in and out, so it straddles
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: the line between new and old. This design once again,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: i will state this tops. Just backtops gold label. You
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: keep trying to re emulate it in different super short
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: print cards. Just bring back gold label. People love gold label,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: they will buy it. So that's what it is. It
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: looks like if you took gold label, but the player
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: died and went to heaven. That's the vibe of Hobbymasters
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: this year. And it is a super short print, so
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: going to be a pretty rare card, going to go
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: for a decent amount of money. Expose is back. Last
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: year it was not it did not look good. It
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: looks a lot cleaner. Now this year it looks like
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: there's like a lot of bubbles around a car around
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the player essentially, but they're you know, changing colors and refractory.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: It's a much more well designed card that is a
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: super short print as well.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: Going to go for a lot of money.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: You have big Ticket as a as a standard kind
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: of insert now where this was in Flagship, so it's
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: just the chrome version of that from Flagship where it's
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: a ticket design and yep, they put it into a
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Baseball all player radiating rookies is back. This one, I
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: think is a standard now going forward. Is essentially like
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: a lava lamp sort of design with a bunch of
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: like different tied I expects to it too. You're gonna
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: have the run of some big rookies with different color variations.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Those are gonna be very popular, probably gonna end up
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: in some of our PC picks for the Pod in
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: the future. And then you've got Finatics Authentics redemptions, which
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: are just redemptions for Fanatics gear. So what stands out
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: to you from some of these returning inserts.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so Helix. Helix is really just strong card. It
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: is trying to compete with like color blasts and things
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: like that from Pinini, which has a hit across a
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: lot of other sports. Future Stars. You kind of were
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: a little sour thought that I actually like the design
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: this year though it feels like that they improve the design.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: It's still gonna be cheap, it's sti gonna be overproduced,
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: but it feels like they actually improve the design. So
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: I'm a little bit more okay with that. And then
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: you know, expose I want to say this again, I
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: said this earlier about Wild Style, I feel like they
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: went to Bowman's Best again and pull another card with xpos.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: It definitely has a little that Bowman's Best kind of
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: vibe going again. So there's a few of them that
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: I think are are pretty pretty good hits here. Big
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: Ticket to Me is actually one of the lower ones.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: Like it just feels it feels like very much a
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: Pinini insert, and like it just if anything feels overproduced
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: in this one, it's that one. It just it feels
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: very gimmicky and doesn't feel like it fits. It's like
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: it's lower than for me than future Stars by a
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: decent decent range. So again I think they returned to
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: some really good ones. There's only one or two clunkers
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: in here overall, so a lot of great sets to
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: put together. And again I think the warning I have
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: is be careful with the inserts. It is really really
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: hard this year to tell the difference between a rare
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: insert and a regular insert because the designs they did
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: a good job on all of it. That it is,
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: there's gonna be these situations. Like I said with Etch,
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: I think it will happen with Ultra Violet. I think
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: there's gonna be a fume there that they sneak into
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: the just bargain bins because people do not realize.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: What they have. Yeah.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: The other one that actually might end up there, I
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: actually missed it in the rundown because I figured this
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: would happen with the number of inserts is the Numbers
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Live Forever set, which is actually it's just two cards.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: It's Billy Williams and Wade Boggs. I mentioned it during
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: the autos, but because they were both twenty six number
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: twenty six, they got like their own set of cards
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: where it's hearkening back a little bit to like the
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: Bowman First Legends that they were doing. But yeah, I
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: think they're trying to make this a staple now going forward,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: where you know they were both number twenty six. We'll
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: see twenty sevens next year, which means Mike Trout that
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: they're setting this up in tops chrome every year. But
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: the autos there will be the bigger chases. They do
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: also have a base card to them with a Rainbow
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: run behind it as well too, so something to keep
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: in mind.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: But I'm kind of out of breath, I don't know
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: about you.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: A lot of that was a lot but I feel
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: like I like Tops Chrome more after the more we
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: talked about like it. We know it's gonna be overprinted,
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: we know it's to be overproduced, but like I do
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: feel like ripping it. You're gonna be relatively happy with
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: what you get because the quality of the cards and
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: the quality inserts did pretty well. I even think they
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: did a decent job on some of the chases. So
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: I'm actually a little more positive about it as we
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: finish up here. But yeah, there was a lot.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think if anything, it's also gonna
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: like really infuse the twenty twenty six market with a
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: lot of great inserts, where Flagship has fallen down in
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: all their releases. I think this year that like these
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: Top Chrome Tops Chrome inserts, if you're out there building
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: PCs of individual players or individual teams, I think you're
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: gonna want to get a lot of these inserts into
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: your collection because they'll be relatively easy to find outside
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: the super short prints, especially at card shows or in
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: discount bins and in bulk, and so gonna be some
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: pretty beautiful cards, I think in terms of where you're
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: looking at from this twenty six Tops Chrome run of inserts, Yeah,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: I don't know if I'd be too thrilled with being
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: out there ripping my own hobby in jump of boxes
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: of this, but they're beautiful cards and I'm excited to
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: see them at shows and watch them pop up on
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: eBay over the.
