Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: This is Tez Catlipoca from Diametric Brewing Company.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show we normally do, where we taste and rink some beer.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And tonight we had the beer handoff pre-crack executed flawlessly between Ross and Brett.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: It was a close one.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: I always forgive that I can't do the cracks because I'm also running the sound, so it really doesn't work, but someday I'll figure it out.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Excuses, excuses.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Four hands.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: You just say it with confidence, right?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I believe you.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: This is uh brewed by Diametric Brewing Company out of Lee's Summit, Missouri.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: And what are our first thoughts?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It's dark.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: This might be the darkest beer we've had.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: I think that's fair to say.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: This is an Imperial Stout.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Um sliced Imperial Stout.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: One of my one of the I remember the day that I that I first had an Imperial Stout.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Have you ever had an old Rasputin?
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: That was one of the like one of the first craft beers that I've ever had.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Um it's it's an Imperial Stout, so it's dark, high alcohol content.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Um just incredibly smooth.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: And this is this is like that.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Um this is a nostalgic one.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: It's really smooth.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: And you know, I the I get the the taste and I get a sort of a hit uh sweetness in it as well, and then the aftertaste for me is a smoky kind of uh kind of a flavor as well, but it's just all blended together really well.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: Rah Rasputin lover gushing queen.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Uh this one packs a punch though, 12%.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: Alcohol is very prominent.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: I think this is one of the only beers we've tried so far that like seems to stick to the walls of the glass that you're drinking it out of.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Do you feel like it tastes boozy though?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: I don't really think it did.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I know if you get up in the 9-10%, like you get like an alcohol like wang to it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: This doesn't have that.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: The flavor overpowers that, I think.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: They describe it so the description from the can says uh this ale inspired by the Mesoamerican chocolate drink, chocolatal, uh, Tezcatlipoca translates in the hotel to smoking mirror the god of divining.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Look deep into the obsidian opaqueness and take in the flavors of chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, mulatto chili, and chili da arboles.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: I don't really know what those chilies taste like.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, so I can't really pick them out of there necessarily, but all that other like chocolate, vanilla, uh cinnamon.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like that's I I get those too.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I I think uh at least from my experience, like I I've made birya tacos several times, and uh you use Chili Day Arboles in that as part of the sauce, and you like steep them and blend them up.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: There's there's some smokiness in those peppers, and I think I get a little smokiness in this, but it's it's not like pepper flavor or spice to me.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: So yeah, the pepper is or the smokiness is very prominent.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Along with that the chocolatiness.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: But I don't experience like any of those flavors as being overwhelming.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: I would agree.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: No, but they do jive together really well.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: It almost it like the mouthfeel to me almost it almost feels like hot chocolate.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: Like you know, it's like slightly thick chocolate notes in there.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a little creamy kind of creamy, yeah.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: That's a much better not not thick, but yeah, cream creamy is a good way to put it.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: It still settles, like even after you have swallowed the drink, you can still kind of feel it settle across your palate.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Coach your mouth.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's got a good mouthfeel to it.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: I was trying to decide, uh I I love this can, and I don't know what sort of a figure or what they have depicted on the can, but I assume it's Mesoamerican symbolism or of some sort.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Uh caricature.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: That's pretty cool too.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's a sort of a figure carrying uh some couple of different flowers, it seems.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Uh bowl of cocoa beans on its yeah, I would assume cocoa.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: It's got a leopard's tail.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Sugar cane in its hand.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Skull on its foot.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Skull on its foot.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Yep, I was just looking at that.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: It's a lot going on.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's the sort of thing that, oh, I would I would kind of like to learn more about this.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Agreed, yeah.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: We'll say I think it's it's pretty sweet.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: It's quite sweet, yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Well, not maybe not quite, but it's very prominent.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: I would say it's very sweet.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Gotta drive that ABB up somehow.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: This is uh East was eating well.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: And maybe, maybe for me, that's what really drives home the hot chocolate.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: It's like that ling, like, it's like mouthfeel, the lingering sweetness that's there.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: It's like it's all those things together.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Which which kind of makes sense because like hot chocolate originated in Mesoamerica.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I'm wondering if that's what this um chocolatal drink is.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I've never had it.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, sure, yeah.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: But I'm assuming that maybe it's something like that.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that that probably makes sense.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's basically like a hot chocolate with Bailey's in it that's cooled down.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: It's a very interesting take, but sure.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: It's like a common like morning after the bonfire drink.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Um, all right, let's bring it back into the realm of DD a little bit here.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, what pub would you maybe find this in?
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, and if you renamed it, what'd you name this beer?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I I'll I can go first.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Because um I didn't try I didn't try very hard.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: At least he's honest.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, fair.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, so you can you can find this at a tavern called We Don't Mess Around.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Fair.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Sounds welcoming.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: And the name of the beverage is Damn That's Good.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Holy crap.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: That's I couldn't get past that.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: That's as far as I got.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Sold.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I would absolutely order that beer for sure.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: I I envision that like you walk into this pub and you have like the beer board, right?
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: And it it's like the original name was just Damn That's Good, but then they had it and they like written in like red marker is holy crap.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I was uh taking another drink.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Bray, what do you got?
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Uh this one does not have a name.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: This is just from Rorick.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: He's a a dwarf that makes us his own makes his own beer and sells it at the marketplace.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: In the in the market, he just got it is pops up at a little table, sells it from behind the table.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Roric small batch number 37.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: He's a dwarf.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Uh you can find my beer at the Broken Blade Tavern.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: And this beer is called Tears of Tempest.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Tempest is a god of war in Fey Room.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: And legend had it that the first batch of this beer was brewed with the tears from Tempest himself that he shed after a battle that they fought with fiends and lost many men.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: Did they try retracing their steps?
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: To find them.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: To find the tears?
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Because they lost they lost many men, you say.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: But uh I feel like that's a funeral joke.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: So where does all the sweetness come from, all these tears?
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Um great question.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: That was the first badge.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: It's evolved over time.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so how do they continue to make this beer?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: It was the first badge, and now it's like resembling that badge.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: Tied into the uh military industrial complex.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: This is this is the drink of soldiers, and they need the high alcohol content so they can forget what they're going out and fighting.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: That's fair.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: So well, uh, you can find this beer at the Vale.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Um speak with Dietra, the barkeep, and she can serve you up a flagon of the abyss.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Dark, mysterious.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: It felt like it.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Uh Dietra is a shifter, so actually I feel like this would be an Eberon setting.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Feels like that type of fitting.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: This is the favorite drink of the House of Eren.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: What?
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: It's in the from the veil, you said.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, not that veil.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: V-E-I-L, not V-A-L-E.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's no, this is Game of Thrones.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: This is a Game of Thrones podcast.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: False.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Could only find it at the wall.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, that would keep them warm.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, ma'am.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it would.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Um, all right.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: The other side of our D D component in ranking beers is the challenge rating.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: So on a scale of one, crema's domestic lighter, easy, approachable, drinkable beers, two CR20, uh, double IPAs, maybe something high IBUs, a little more challenging to drink, not for your average domestic beer drinker.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Where do you guys put this?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: I'm interested to see where this one lands.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: This is a one.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: Because I okay, I we always have this comment.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we always like what is in here to put you off from it.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: The sweetness.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: I don't see a lot of people turning down sweetness.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: Uh the cinnamon, I don't see a lot of people turning down cinnamon or chocolate or vanilla or nice.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's dark.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the color is put in a solo cup.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: Like as long as it's not in a transparent glass, uh you're gonna be fine.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: I like there's to me, there is nothing of like offensive about this beer, or like that's really a a challenge in any way.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: But that's just my interpretation.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go slightly different.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: I'm going 18.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Seriously?
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, it is potent.
- 11:40unknown: Yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: It's as well.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: If you hand this to somebody who's used to drinking 4% beers, like make sure you don't tell them light beers, like Mick Ultra or something like that, and they go to try and drink one of these, they're gonna be flat on their back.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, but it'll but they'll get there easily.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Well, that's true.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: They might drink it.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: No, they'll it'll go down quick.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: They can drink it, but it's just gonna be like, oh, I don't think I could have another one of those.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be one of those conversations.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, honestly, I I was thinking it was a 17.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, I mean, I get it.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: And and I think what it for all the same reasons, like as somebody that's used to like lighter beers, this is this is not their thing.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: And I do agree with you that there's nothing off-putting about this beer at all.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: But it's right, but if I'm walking up and I drink Make Ultras or Cores or something like that, 12% dark beer, and then and then it does have pretty complex flavors.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, we all like craft beer, so it's like for me personally, this is like five, five or six.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: But to the average Joe, to me, this is this is a 17.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So I feel like I've got three different scores.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Oh shit.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: He found a loophole.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: The first score is like Phil.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: If he was gonna drink this beer, I agree with Damon.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: This is like a one.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: That's regular Phil.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: And then there's responsible Phil that's like, holy shit, this is a 12% beer.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: This should probably be like probably like a seven, right?
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: I should maybe approach with caution.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And then if this was like Phil when he was 20, this is probably like a 20.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Like a what is this beer?
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Like, this is beer.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: It's just chocolate.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: It's just a chocolate drink.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: That means when we first poured it, we were like motor oil?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's dark.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: It's really dark.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there it is delicious, and I love it, but I think you'd have to be pretty convincing to get someone that is not into craft beer to probably try it even.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And then if they did try it, uh it's flavorful.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And if they're used to drinking something that kind of tastes like flavored water, that's quite a change.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: But uh those are three scores.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: So, what's your final score?
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: So, yay or nay, you're saying yes.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: I'm saying that if you don't drink the rest of that one sitting right there on the table, then I'm gonna drink it.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: I'll split it with it.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, thanks, David.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: It's not a problem.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: What do you say?
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: We have more pretzels, correct?
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe I need some more.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: I will go find it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: So you're saying yay as well.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: I'll be staying fairly late tonight.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: It's fine.
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: There's a bed right there.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, this is a yay.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: I I honestly I would I would punch someone in the throat to be able to make this beer.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: You know what we're getting from Damon next.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: That would be awesome.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: This beer is so good.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: That is that's a big take from Damon.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: All right, Ross, where are you coming?
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: Uh I I do like it.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: It's it's probably a nay for me.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: I it's like I have to be I'd have to be in the right mood to have this beer.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Now remember, the question is if someone someone offered this to you.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: You drink it.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: That is play by the rules, Ross.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: That you established in what may or may not have been the last episode.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Um, that's a yes.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: I do like it.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: You're gonna try to tell me you wouldn't have one of these.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Is there ever a beer someone would ever offer you that you would say no to you?
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: Not at all.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna caveat the smallly.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Am I am I drinking this beer with food?
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: If I'm drinking it with food, I would say no.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Because it's like I I don't like heavy beers when I'm eating food.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Like if I'm eating like chicken strips, I want like a course light because it just goes down easy to wash things down.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: If this is like I'm sitting around having beers with you guys, happily, if you put one of these in front of me, I would drink it again.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: So, in that sense, yes, fine.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: All right, polar opposite.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, if I'm eating food, like if I'm eating tacos, I want this beer.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Other than that, no.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Mole.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I would have this with some mole, but outside of that, I I'm probably okay.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: I don't too sweet, too much alcohol for me.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Like, not my thing.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would give up dessert, and like this would be dessert for sure.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Oh, I would put a scoop of ice cream in this.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: We have like four beers that we want to do that with.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: That should be a special episode next season where we float those four beers.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: I think each one of those beers has been a nay for me.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could definitely see this.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: I think you're right.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: I could definitely see this being like too sweet for a person for sure.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: It is really an unusual thing.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Like, if you're not used to like sweetness in your beers, yeah.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: And it's definitely a craft beer thing.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Like you're used to domestics, you're not getting that flavor in any beers that you're drinking.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: So or if you're an IPA drinker, yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: This might be too far different for me.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Well, once again, this is the uh Tez Catlipoca from Diametric Brewing Company out of Lee's Summit, Missouri.
