- 1:03Speaker 1: Turner Classic Movies has a podcast called The Plot Thickens
- 1:07Speaker 1: where they do deep dives into movies and TV shows
- 1:10Speaker 1: and the people who make them. There have been six
- 1:13Speaker 1: seasons so far, and I just recently became aware of
- 1:16Speaker 1: season three, about the life of Lucy O Ball. I'm
- 1:21Speaker 1: from Jamestown, New York, a small town south of Buffalo
- 1:24Speaker 1: that happens to be Lucy's hometown, and it's the home
- 1:28Speaker 1: of the Lucy Desi Museum. Yes, that's a real thing.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I probably would not have started listening to the podcast
- 1:36Speaker 1: if not for my hometown connection, but I highly recommend
- 1:39Speaker 1: it regardless of where you're from. The podcast is extremely
- 1:43Speaker 1: well done and filled with amazing nuggets. For example, the
- 1:47Speaker 1: TV shows Mission Impossible and Star Trek might have never
- 1:51Speaker 1: been made if not for Lucy's insistence as the head
- 1:55Speaker 1: of a production studio. So if you're looking for a
- 1:58Speaker 1: good podcast other than this one, of course, check out
- 2:02Speaker 1: the plot Thickens season three. You'll love Lucy. Now, let's
- 2:08Speaker 1: get to the radio replays from Sunday's loss to the Jets.
- 2:12Speaker 1: After scoring a season high thirty three points last week,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Joe Flacco and the Bengals top that by scoring on
- 2:18Speaker 1: six of their first eight drives. First down in goal
- 2:23Speaker 1: inches away from the end zone. Joe Flacco is under
- 2:25Speaker 1: center sample gets right behind him for.
- 2:28Speaker 2: A tush push touchdown Bengals as Joe Flacco runs it
- 2:35Speaker 2: in from inches away and give Cincinnati on nine to
- 2:39Speaker 2: nothing lead.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Pending the extra points second and two from the forty
- 2:43Speaker 1: four of the Jets, the Bengals have a ten to
- 2:45Speaker 1: three lead. Here in the second quarter, Flacco fakes a
- 2:47Speaker 1: toss to the left, bootlegs right, throws it high and deep.
- 2:50Speaker 1: T Higgins catches, have the.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Five runs into the end zone, touchdown Bengals. A beautiful
- 2:59Speaker 2: rainbow downfield by Joe Flacco. Higgins with the catch, He
- 3:04Speaker 2: hands the ball to a spectator and the Bengals have
- 3:07Speaker 2: their second touchdown of the day.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Flaco waits for a shotgun snap, catches the ball's shoulder
- 3:12Speaker 1: high back to throw passes over the middle, Caught on
- 3:14Speaker 1: the run, Chase Brown to the five, fighting for the
- 3:17Speaker 1: goal line.
- 3:18Speaker 2: He's in touchdown Bengals. Flacco accounting for his third touchdown
- 3:25Speaker 2: of the first half. Two throwing, one rushing, and the
- 3:29Speaker 2: Bengals are up by thirteen for the pat coming out,
- 3:33Speaker 2: here's a handoff to samajp Ryan runs up the middle
- 3:36Speaker 2: inside the twenty, racing to the fifteen ten fe Pilon touchdown.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Sama jp Ryan and the Bengals push the lead back
- 3:47Speaker 2: to two scores. They're up by fourteen with a pat
- 3:51Speaker 2: coming up a thirty two yard run for samajp Rye.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Second and goal from the one, Flaco and the gun
- 3:58Speaker 2: back at the sixth Chase Brown off his right eight hip.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Flaco hands it off. Chase Brown lowers the patshit into
- 4:04Speaker 2: the end zone, touchdown Bengals.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The Bengals were up by ten at the end of
- 4:11Speaker 1: the first quarter, by eleven at halftime, and by fifteen
- 4:15Speaker 1: going to the fourth. They were up by fourteen points
- 4:18Speaker 1: with less than eight minutes to go, But after stopping
- 4:22Speaker 1: the Jets on their first two drives of the day,
- 4:24Speaker 1: the Bengals defense was only able to force one punt
- 4:28Speaker 1: the remainder of the game, and New York took its
- 4:31Speaker 1: first lead all day with less than two minutes to go.
- 4:34Speaker 1: First and goal from the four fields under center, Breese
- 4:38Speaker 1: Hall behind him. It's a toss sweep to the right.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Breese Hall looking to throw pump fakes throws into the
- 4:43Speaker 1: end zone and it is caught by Mason Taylor for
- 4:47Speaker 1: a tying touchdown and a pat can give the Jets
- 4:51Speaker 1: the lead. Taylor going up and over DJ Turner to
- 4:55Speaker 1: catch that throw from running back Brecee Hall. The Bengals
- 4:58Speaker 1: still had a chance to pull it out, as they
- 5:00Speaker 1: got the ball at their own twenty five with one
- 5:02Speaker 1: forty eight to go. A seven yard pass to Jamar
- 5:05Speaker 1: Chase and a twelve yard run by Chase Brown quickly
- 5:08Speaker 1: moved the ball to the forty four. The Bengals were
- 5:11Speaker 1: roughly twenty yards away from very makeable field goal range
- 5:15Speaker 1: for Evan McPherson, but an incomplete pass to andre Yosi Vash,
- 5:20Speaker 1: a one yard run by samaj p Erin, and an
- 5:23Speaker 1: incomplete pass to Jamar Chase made it fourth and nine
- 5:27Speaker 1: at their own forty five with thirty two seconds to go.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Bigans out wide to the right, Chase out to the left,
- 5:32Speaker 1: Flacco back to throw. The protection is good, he throws
- 5:35Speaker 1: over the middle incomplete intended for Yosi Vash, and it
- 5:39Speaker 1: would have been short of the first down anyway. The
- 5:42Speaker 1: Bengals fail and the Jets are celebrating with twenty seven
- 5:45Speaker 1: seconds to go as the fans begin streaming toward the exits.
- 5:49Speaker 1: The Jets got their first win of the year, thirty
- 5:52Speaker 1: nine to thirty eight, dropping the Bengals to three and five.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Here's Zach Taylor after a bitterly disappointing loss.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Not acceptable humbling for us. Certainly never got a chance
- 6:04Speaker 3: to really break that game open, like like we felt
- 6:06Speaker 3: like we were capable of and you know, two opportunities
- 6:09Speaker 3: there at the end of the game to close it
- 6:11Speaker 3: out on offense and defensively to get guys on the
- 6:13Speaker 3: ground and tackling wasn't good enough. So we're not gonna
- 6:16Speaker 3: look at anything and say anything was good enough after
- 6:18Speaker 3: that loss and uh, humbling, and and we're gonna have
- 6:23Speaker 3: to really dig deep to bounce back next week.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Why. I don't know.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I mean, I I wish I had that reason for you.
- 6:28Speaker 3: You know, it's just someone's got to set them make
- 6:32Speaker 3: a play. Someone's got to make a play either way,
- 6:34Speaker 3: just to separate that game for us. Great turnover, get
- 6:37Speaker 3: it on the ground, a third down win, offensively, explosive
- 6:40Speaker 3: play in the game. It just never happened for us.
- 6:44Speaker 3: When the defense started to face a burs feed, you
- 6:46Speaker 3: feel like it's snowballed on that group. Yeah, we just
- 6:49Speaker 3: need somebody to rise up and make a play. Someone
- 6:51Speaker 3: just just hold the ford down, you know. And and
- 6:54Speaker 3: I didn't see enough of that today.
- 6:55Speaker 5: You feel like you've got to kind of improve being
- 6:57Speaker 5: tangibles there and your first situations like that.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I think someone needs to step up and lead the group.
- 7:02Speaker 3: That's what I'm waiting to see someone step up and
- 7:04Speaker 3: lead the group and and take some accountability over there
- 7:06Speaker 3: and and get this thing going the right way.
- 7:08Speaker 1: From rush defense wise, why do you think they were
- 7:10Speaker 1: able to gild it so much?
- 7:10Speaker 3: They got a lot of momentum. I mean it's uh,
- 7:13Speaker 3: they were a dangerous team that way. That was certainly
- 7:16Speaker 3: a strength of theirs, you know, with their offensive line,
- 7:18Speaker 3: and so again we just we weren't good enough, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 3: I don't know how many explosives. It felt like, it
- 7:24Speaker 3: felt like there was a decent amount of explosives there, so.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Very better both captain and get capitalized.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And also in draft picks on the defensive line out
- 7:33Speaker 3: disappointing of the pass rush. Yeah, we need we need
- 7:36Speaker 3: somebody to step up and win some one on ones.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Where is loss pat Well, I'm not into ranking losses.
- 7:42Speaker 3: I'm into being frustrated that we lost this game, you know.
- 7:44Speaker 3: And it's uh, it was right there for us to
- 7:46Speaker 3: grab and create some momentum for ourselves and and we
- 7:50Speaker 3: just we missed the opportunity, quite simple. And uh, you
- 7:53Speaker 3: gotta give credit to the Jets man. They we had
- 7:55Speaker 3: them down multiple times, big scores, and and we just
- 7:59Speaker 3: never delivered that knockout below and they just kept hanging
- 8:02Speaker 3: in there, and they made play after play after play
- 8:04Speaker 3: and their confidence rose and so then they were able
- 8:07Speaker 3: to get that win. And we saw this on tape.
- 8:09Speaker 3: We saw the five to one score games, we saw
- 8:11Speaker 3: end of games. They had their opportunities and they just
- 8:14Speaker 3: hadn't been able to capitalize them yet. And here we
- 8:16Speaker 3: are worth the team that they got it against. It's
- 8:18Speaker 3: unfortunate the friends.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Game of things.
- 8:20Speaker 1: What you'll want accomplish the season now, how much.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Wo it's still on the table, It's still a long season.
- 8:26Speaker 3: You know, this is gonna be a difficult season for
- 8:27Speaker 3: a lot of teams, and so you just got to
- 8:29Speaker 3: be in the thick of it and give yourself an opportunity.
- 8:31Speaker 3: This is one that we had right in our grasp,
- 8:33Speaker 3: and that's the disappointing part about it. We were right there,
- 8:36Speaker 3: we had this and so anytime you got a game
- 8:39Speaker 3: like that that you can do and we got to
- 8:41Speaker 3: get away from us.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Frustrating it certainly was, and while the offense got stopped
- 8:46Speaker 1: on their final two drives, thirty eight points should have
- 8:49Speaker 1: been enough against the team that was averaging about eighteen
- 8:53Speaker 1: and a half going into the game. Joe Flacco is
- 8:55Speaker 1: terrific again, throwing for two hundred and twenty three yards
- 8:58Speaker 1: with two touchdowns, no picks, and a passer rating of
- 9:01Speaker 1: one hundred point five, and after rushing for a season
- 9:05Speaker 1: high one hundred and forty two yards against Pittsburgh last week,
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Bengals were even better against the Jets, going for
- 9:12Speaker 1: one hundred and eighty one yards on the ground and
- 9:14Speaker 1: averaging seven point nine per carry. Here are a few
- 9:18Speaker 1: of Flacco's most interesting comments from his postgame news conference.
- 9:23Speaker 6: I mean, listen, you know this league is most of
- 9:27Speaker 6: the time it's going to come down to those last
- 9:28Speaker 6: you know, that last minute or two and you know,
- 9:33Speaker 6: obviously we had a drive before that two minute where
- 9:36Speaker 6: if we go put points on the board, then it's
- 9:37Speaker 6: a different game, and we just weren't able to do it.
- 9:40Speaker 6: I mean, we went down and scored, and then they scored,
- 9:43Speaker 6: and we got the ball in our ot mindset was
- 9:44Speaker 6: go down to score again, and we did it. I mean,
- 9:47Speaker 6: I don't think there was any I don't think there
- 9:49Speaker 6: was any stepping off the gas. I really don't. Maybe
- 9:52Speaker 6: we just didn't execute. I would assume we just didn't
- 9:54Speaker 6: execute as well as maybe we wanted to on some
- 9:57Speaker 6: of those on those last six, seven eight plays.
- 9:59Speaker 7: You know, how do you keep it from evolving into
- 10:02Speaker 7: we're doing our part and they're not doing theirs.
- 10:05Speaker 6: I think everybody, I think that slips into people's heads,
- 10:08Speaker 6: you know, like it's hard not to, and I think
- 10:11Speaker 6: it more slips into the gut decides heads. Who's who
- 10:14Speaker 6: feels like they're not necessarily, you know, living up to
- 10:17Speaker 6: their standard. But this is a team sport, and we're
- 10:22Speaker 6: all in this together. It's not offense defense special teams.
- 10:26Speaker 6: I mean, at the end of like, they're out there
- 10:27Speaker 6: doing their job, but we are one. We feel this
- 10:31Speaker 6: as one. So I think it's hard to maybe not
- 10:36Speaker 6: be in your head when when maybe you're that side
- 10:39Speaker 6: of the ball for a given stretch. But man, like
- 10:43Speaker 6: I always try to tell people like, I'm not I'm
- 10:46Speaker 6: so consumed with doing my job, and everybody should be
- 10:49Speaker 6: so consumed with doing their job that they're not worried
- 10:51Speaker 6: about what other guys are doing. And how guys you know,
- 10:55Speaker 6: they put the binders on and go do your job.
- 10:57Speaker 6: And I think when everybody can do that, that's when
- 10:59Speaker 6: you that's when you get out of those things. There's
- 11:03Speaker 6: no judging your brothers for not playing up to their expectations,
- 11:08Speaker 6: their support and trying to give those guys confidence, because
- 11:13Speaker 6: that's what it is. A lot of times, you know
- 11:15Speaker 6: you need to play this game with confidence. And if
- 11:17Speaker 6: you lose a little bit of that because you think
- 11:19Speaker 6: your brothers are kind of looking at you like, oh,
- 11:21Speaker 6: come on, like can't you just do this? That's not
- 11:24Speaker 6: a good feeling to have. And hopefully we can all
- 11:28Speaker 6: get across that that's not how we should be feeling
- 11:31Speaker 6: towards our teammates.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Unfortunately, with an opportunity to even the record at four
- 11:36Speaker 1: and four at home against an oh and sevent team,
- 11:39Speaker 1: the Bengals let it slip through their fingers. Here's Ted Carris.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Do you feeling collectively as a group offense defense?
- 11:47Speaker 7: Maybe you guys let up emotionally psychologically when you guys
- 11:52Speaker 7: were up thirty one sixteen thirty eight to twenty four.
- 11:55Speaker 7: I know I didn't. I can't speak for everyone else,
- 11:57Speaker 7: but I don't relax till it's triple zeros, and obviously
- 12:00Speaker 7: it's a three hour fight that we lost.
- 12:02Speaker 8: It's a pretty evident, I mean, Zach said postgame he
- 12:05Speaker 8: needs someone to step up. It's pretty clear on defense
- 12:08Speaker 8: the leadership is lacking, and that's something that even the
- 12:11Speaker 8: head coach is searching for. You as the captain year
- 12:14Speaker 8: in a year out, is there any way that you
- 12:16Speaker 8: can help. I know you don't play defense, but you're
- 12:18Speaker 8: one of the biggest leaders on this team, Like, how
- 12:20Speaker 8: how can you help fill that void on defense?
- 12:22Speaker 1: If you can?
- 12:24Speaker 7: I mean, I can be a leader for the team.
- 12:25Speaker 7: I'm not out there with the eleven guys on defense,
- 12:27Speaker 7: So you know, I'm not.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Just gonna blame one thing. We can't just blame defensive leadership.
- 12:33Speaker 7: We gotta look at a lot of different things.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yeah, let the let the Jets come in and.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Be say horrendous, how do you dig yourself out of this?
- 12:43Speaker 4: Nice? You guys.
- 12:44Speaker 7: You guys love asking me that one same way I
- 12:46Speaker 7: always do. Just coming to work tomorrow, coming to work Wednesday.
- 12:48Speaker 7: We've got a football game to play. So I'm not
- 12:50Speaker 7: gonna get quoted with a cliche this week. So but
- 12:54Speaker 7: we got we got the Bears coming into town, so
- 12:56Speaker 7: let's go.
- 12:57Speaker 3: It seemed like the offensive line, you know, muscles, he
- 13:00Speaker 3: had almost two hundred yards rushing.
- 13:02Speaker 6: She might be had at the Bobe game.
- 13:05Speaker 4: And then what you wanted to do?
- 13:05Speaker 1: It looked like there's a line.
- 13:08Speaker 7: I didn't score forty, So doesn't mean.
- 13:13Speaker 3: This loss change the outlook upon the season for you guys.
- 13:17Speaker 7: I mean maybe you can go through the numbers. I
- 13:18Speaker 7: don't know. We're gonna we got the Bears coming to time,
- 13:21Speaker 7: so we're gonna all summack this one for a night
- 13:24Speaker 7: and uh get ready for a big week.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I mean, jeez, we gotta go.
- 13:29Speaker 1: The defense has given up a bunch of points this year,
- 13:31Speaker 1: but in several games there were extranuating circumstances. Five turnovers
- 13:36Speaker 1: and two defensive scores in the Minnesota game, too many
- 13:40Speaker 1: three and outs in the Denver game, leaving the defense
- 13:43Speaker 1: on the field at high altitude for nearly forty minutes.
- 13:47Speaker 1: But there was nothing like that against the Jets. The
- 13:50Speaker 1: defense surrendered five hundred and two yards and it was
- 13:53Speaker 1: nearly an even split. Two point fifty four rushing two
- 13:57Speaker 1: forty eight passing. Here are safe these Jordan's battle and
- 14:01Speaker 1: Geno Stell.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Anytime we give up thirty nine points in the game,
- 14:04Speaker 5: you know, you feel like it's on us, you know,
- 14:06Speaker 5: especially if be loser. You know, even if we want it,
- 14:08Speaker 5: it's still on us. And that's just the you know,
- 14:10Speaker 5: we got the attitude we have to have as a defense,
- 14:13Speaker 5: you know, and we let up thirty nine points. We
- 14:15Speaker 5: should be mad, you know, should be upset. You know,
- 14:17Speaker 5: we should be should have come back hungrier. So hopefully
- 14:20Speaker 5: that's a that's a life lesson. We let it, let
- 14:24Speaker 5: it blow by, and then be want to know next week.
- 14:25Speaker 9: The offense at their job today, we can't say nothing
- 14:27Speaker 9: about that. I mean, they put up almost forty points.
- 14:28Speaker 9: Just so you know, there's a defense. We definitely got
- 14:31Speaker 9: to step up and do better.
- 14:32Speaker 5: That's all this, I mean, that's how the NFL is,
- 14:34Speaker 5: you know. Uh, you know, every team's good. You know,
- 14:36Speaker 5: we gotta come very ready to play, you know, every week.
- 14:38Speaker 5: You know, obviously just lost a lot of close games,
- 14:41Speaker 5: and we knew they were a tough team. We knew
- 14:44Speaker 5: we couldn't slouch, and we did that and we got
- 14:47Speaker 5: we lost. So I mean, like I said earlier, it's
- 14:48Speaker 5: twenty four rules. We gotta focus on the Bears.
- 14:51Speaker 9: We all got to step up. It's not one person,
- 14:52Speaker 9: it's not two people. Whoever it is, everyone gotta step up.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Whoever's on the field got to step up. I put
- 14:56Speaker 9: myself in there included, so you know, at the end
- 14:59Speaker 9: of the day, we gotta st get the ball back
- 15:01Speaker 9: to the office, and we all got to do our job.
- 15:02Speaker 9: Whoever your job is on that starr and play whatever
- 15:04Speaker 9: the call is is, do your job.
- 15:05Speaker 1: They'll try to bounce back next Sunday at home against
- 15:08Speaker 1: the Bears, who are four and three after thirty to
- 15:11Speaker 1: sixteen loss to the Baltimore Ravens, who did not have
- 15:15Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson. In that game. The Ravens ran for one
- 15:18Speaker 1: hundred and seventy seven yards in the win. The Bengals

- 15:38Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Normally, this would
- 15:43Speaker 1: be the time for the radio Guy's recap, But as
- 15:45Speaker 1: you probably know, Dave Lapham was inducted into the Bengals
- 15:49Speaker 1: Ring of Honor at halftime and had numerous friends and
- 15:52Speaker 1: family members in town for the weekend. So we'll put
- 15:55Speaker 1: that segment on the back burner for a week and
- 15:57Speaker 1: return with a postgame conversation with lap following next week's
- 16:01Speaker 1: game against the Bears. Now time for this week's fun
- 16:05Speaker 1: fact segment, as we get to know the person under
- 16:08Speaker 1: the pads. Time for some fun facts with linebacker Demetrius
- 16:12Speaker 1: Knight from Locust Grove, Georgia, less than an hour away
- 16:15Speaker 1: from Atlanta. Your jersey was retired last week. Describe getting
- 16:20Speaker 1: that news and going home for the ceremony.
- 16:23Speaker 10: Yeah, it was a true blessing just to just to
- 16:26Speaker 10: be in that moment. It's not every day you get
- 16:29Speaker 10: to retire an old high school, high school jersey number.
- 16:33Speaker 10: You kind of think you're for your forguiden sometimes when
- 16:36Speaker 10: you when you're you're off and doing other things. But
- 16:39Speaker 10: just having that to be recognized as is nothing but God.
- 16:43Speaker 10: You know, nothing, nothing but Jesus. And that's what we
- 16:45Speaker 10: stand on over there as strong Christian schools. So glad
- 16:50Speaker 10: to see that they're still doing their thing in all
- 16:52Speaker 10: the sports categories. But also good to see that, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 10: they'll they'll leave a bit, a little bit of my
- 16:56Speaker 10: legacy to see around. So as my kids continue to grow,
- 17:00Speaker 10: that'll be something I can, you know, rubbing their faces
- 17:03Speaker 10: every once in a while as there has they're grown up.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Did your childhood revolve around sports or were you involved
- 17:09Speaker 1: in a variety of activities.
- 17:11Speaker 4: It was pretty much valled around sports.
- 17:14Speaker 10: But Mom always made sure that we had had, you know,
- 17:18Speaker 10: our minds opened. She didn't want us to just solely
- 17:20Speaker 10: focus on sports, so we were always doing uh, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 10: little plays and musicals and and things like that, making
- 17:27Speaker 10: sure we volunteer doing chorus and things like that. It
- 17:30Speaker 10: wasn't the what was the favorite thing to do, but
- 17:33Speaker 10: uh as you got to get a couple of friends
- 17:36Speaker 10: in there, you end up making.
- 17:37Speaker 4: It funs ended up working out.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Mother knows best. I'm sure it enriched your childhood. According
- 17:43Speaker 1: to your bio Demitrius, you once caused a thirty minute
- 17:46Speaker 1: delay in a basketball game by breaking the rim on
- 17:49Speaker 1: a slam dunk, the rim the backboard. What exactly happened.
- 17:53Speaker 10: It ended up being the rim I went up to
- 17:56Speaker 10: try to flush it with two hands, and uh went
- 17:59Speaker 10: in and out and I, I guess I was a
- 18:01Speaker 10: little too heavy for that rim. So it ended up
- 18:04Speaker 10: giving way and was bent for good good thirty minutes.
- 18:07Speaker 10: And yeah, they had to go find another rim and
- 18:11Speaker 10: you know, get the crews and nuts and boats to
- 18:13Speaker 10: get it all off. And I think we checked out
- 18:15Speaker 10: pretty much after day. It's a Tuesday night of late
- 18:18Speaker 10: nights to it had homework to be done, so it
- 18:20Speaker 10: was it was a long night.
- 18:22Speaker 1: You're a linebacker now, but you were a four year
- 18:25Speaker 1: starting quarterback in high school. Give me a comp what
- 18:28Speaker 1: college or NFL quarterback were you most like.
- 18:32Speaker 10: I was definitely most like Cam Newton. I was trying
- 18:35Speaker 10: to emulate him and everything he did. And then started
- 18:38Speaker 10: to watch more college guys, started to watch Jalen Hurts,
- 18:41Speaker 10: just knowing that I was a bigger type of quarterback
- 18:44Speaker 10: and knowing that those are bigger quarterbacks, knowing that they
- 18:47Speaker 10: can run. But it also, you know, not just being
- 18:49Speaker 10: the run, of also being able to, you know, be
- 18:52Speaker 10: a lethal in the past game. So as I continued
- 18:54Speaker 10: to grow in my high school career, would you know,
- 18:58Speaker 10: put the run first menality behind and you know, passed
- 19:01Speaker 10: first and then run.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Second, we're chatting with Demetrius Knight. Were you heavily recruited
- 19:06Speaker 1: out of high school?
- 19:07Speaker 10: No, sir, not very much. Tennessee Tech was pretty much
- 19:11Speaker 10: the only offer I had going into my junior year
- 19:14Speaker 10: and whatnot. And I would go to a camp where
- 19:18Speaker 10: Paul Johnson was still the head coach at Georgia Tech,
- 19:21Speaker 10: and he's like, I don't I don't understand how you
- 19:23Speaker 10: don't have more offers. I'm going to give you a
- 19:25Speaker 10: first one, and that they pretty much sold it for us.
- 19:28Speaker 1: So he made the offer, you chose Georgia Tech, and
- 19:31Speaker 1: then he left before you got there. How difficult was
- 19:34Speaker 1: that for you?
- 19:35Speaker 10: It was pretty pretty difficult, just because I didn't know
- 19:38Speaker 10: what I was going to get. I was already getting
- 19:40Speaker 10: comfortable with the former coaching staff and him. Of course,
- 19:44Speaker 10: that's that's this line. That's a business decision that he
- 19:46Speaker 10: and his family had to make. And I didn't hate
- 19:49Speaker 10: him or anything for that. That's just just just the
- 19:51Speaker 10: way life goes. So of course I still wanted to
- 19:55Speaker 10: be close to my mom and sister, uh not wanted
- 19:58Speaker 10: to be too far away from them and to do
- 20:00Speaker 10: places we were sharing. So I was like of course,
- 20:03Speaker 10: I don't know what the situation will be. Yeah, I
- 20:05Speaker 10: know there's there might be a possibility and now probably
- 20:08Speaker 10: won't be quarterback, just because I know it's a new
- 20:10Speaker 10: new group coming in. But I at least figured it's
- 20:13Speaker 10: it'd still be something on the offense.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Uh.
- 20:16Speaker 10: That was the complete opposite of the spectrum. But uh
- 20:20Speaker 10: and ended up working out for the best.
- 20:22Speaker 1: What was your reaction when they said, Demetrius, you're a linebacker?
- 20:26Speaker 4: Uh? Pretty much? Uh, world went upside down. Uh. I
- 20:31Speaker 4: didn't know what to think.
- 20:32Speaker 10: It was kind of unreal, and I just kind of
- 20:35Speaker 10: went with it for a couple of weeks, thinking, oh,
- 20:36Speaker 10: they're just they'll see I'm no good at this linebacker thing,
- 20:39Speaker 10: and moved me back to to the offense side of
- 20:42Speaker 10: the ball and that quarterback And uh, now, how how
- 20:46Speaker 10: God hasn't played? God has it playing all the time.
- 20:49Speaker 10: Of course, you had to go through trials and tribulation
- 20:51Speaker 10: and perseverance and you end up here in the in
- 20:54Speaker 10: the NFL as a linebacker.
- 20:56Speaker 1: While you were in college, you got married and became
- 20:58Speaker 1: a dad. What your wife's name and how did you
- 21:01Speaker 1: two meet.
- 21:02Speaker 4: My wife's name is gen C. Gen C Knights, she is.
- 21:08Speaker 10: She's also from Lucas Grove and we met. We went
- 21:10Speaker 10: on a mission trip together my junior year, her sophomore year.
- 21:15Speaker 10: But the whole funny thing is, even though we spent
- 21:18Speaker 10: a week out in Haiti doing the Laura's work, we
- 21:20Speaker 10: did not say a word to each other the entire trip.
- 21:23Speaker 10: I remember sitting at her table with her and her
- 21:26Speaker 10: friends and I didn't say a word. And then COVID
- 21:29Speaker 10: would happened and send send me home from campus, and
- 21:32Speaker 10: she's finishing up her her senior year, and you know,
- 21:36Speaker 10: two boy people at home that happened to remember each
- 21:38Speaker 10: other and the rest of the history.
- 21:41Speaker 1: After four years at Georgia Tech, you transferred to Charlotte
- 21:44Speaker 1: and had a breakout season, earning first team All Conference honors.
- 21:49Speaker 1: How important was that season and getting you to.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Where you are now? Yeah, it was a lot.
- 21:53Speaker 10: It was very good for me just because it showed
- 21:56Speaker 10: that I could play the lineback position. Of course, Georgia
- 22:00Speaker 10: Tech it was ups and downs, his and lows, and
- 22:04Speaker 10: that made me the player who I was going into
- 22:07Speaker 10: that situation not knowing who was going to be the coach,
- 22:11Speaker 10: because they're getting it, they ever getting a new coach
- 22:13Speaker 10: ended up getting coach coach Posy coach Biff and him
- 22:17Speaker 10: coming in was was a great start just because everybody
- 22:20Speaker 10: got to start from ground zero. There were no politics involved.
- 22:24Speaker 10: It was come in and you know, earn a spot,
- 22:26Speaker 10: and that's that's all I wanted.
- 22:27Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 22:28Speaker 10: I wanted everybody to be on on ground zero and
- 22:30Speaker 10: if someone out out, you know, out plays me for
- 22:32Speaker 10: the spot, then they just outplayed me. But I wanted
- 22:35Speaker 10: to have a fair shot and made sure that I
- 22:37Speaker 10: made every rep count.
- 22:38Speaker 1: There after great season of Charlotte, you still had one
- 22:41Speaker 1: year of eligibility left. This is the ni l era.
- 22:46Speaker 1: You had a wife and a baby at home. Did
- 22:48Speaker 1: you look for the best financial offer you could find?
- 22:52Speaker 4: I did?
- 22:52Speaker 10: Uh, of course that was there. There were other schools
- 22:56Speaker 10: that I was gonna take visits to, but you know,
- 22:59Speaker 10: when you when you have a wife, it ends up
- 23:01Speaker 10: being you know, happy wife, happy life. And we're already
- 23:04Speaker 10: in North Carolina. South Carolina was you know, an hour
- 23:07Speaker 10: and some chains away, and you know we've got to
- 23:10Speaker 10: pack up a third floor apartment and take it somewhere.
- 23:13Speaker 10: And she's like, yeah, I don't, I don't plan on
- 23:16Speaker 10: going anywhere far, so uh, South Carolina might be as
- 23:19Speaker 10: far as I'm willing to go because that's not bad
- 23:22Speaker 10: of a drive. But it's also close to family, so
- 23:25Speaker 10: you know, you know, that's that's perfect to me.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Why not. So it ended up bringing out very well
- 23:30Speaker 4: for us.
- 23:30Speaker 1: We learned after the draft that you were a door
- 23:33Speaker 1: dash driver in college to bring in a few extra
- 23:35Speaker 1: bucks for your family even after games that you played
- 23:39Speaker 1: in correct.
- 23:40Speaker 10: Absolutely, yeah, that's uh not what you hear every every day.
- 23:44Speaker 4: That not pretty much heard of.
- 23:46Speaker 10: I'm sure they're There are probably players at other smaller
- 23:49Speaker 10: schools that do the same thing. But being at a
- 23:52Speaker 10: school like Charlotte, there were opportunities where got to make
- 23:58Speaker 10: them count. And DoorDash delivered that opportunity to make account
- 24:02Speaker 10: where you know, we didn't have to scrounge and I
- 24:04Speaker 10: didn't have to go apply for different jobs. I had
- 24:07Speaker 10: chick Flare or so, which I was definitely trying. I'm
- 24:10Speaker 10: applying left and right to you know, deliver for Amazon.
- 24:15Speaker 10: I couldn't get through with them.
- 24:16Speaker 4: But.
- 24:18Speaker 10: It ended up working out for the best. DoorDash was
- 24:20Speaker 10: it was quick and easy and you just get on
- 24:23Speaker 10: there and right away you start making deliveries and luckily
- 24:26Speaker 10: for me where you know, you live on a college campus.
- 24:29Speaker 10: You know, college kids love to eat, so that makes
- 24:32Speaker 10: makes it pretty quick and easy to bring in a quick.
- 24:33Speaker 1: But yeah, I've got a student in college and I
- 24:36Speaker 1: see those door dash bills, so you're absolutely right about that.
- 24:39Speaker 1: We're visiting the Demetrius Night. I'm a sucker for an
- 24:42Speaker 1: emotional call from a team to a player during the
- 24:44Speaker 1: NFL Draft, and you got choked up when the Bengals
- 24:47Speaker 1: called you. Can you articulate the emotions that you were feeling?
- 24:52Speaker 10: Yeah, just just everything that my family and I had
- 24:57Speaker 10: been through, wife and I had been through and kids,
- 25:01Speaker 10: just knowing where we were and how unsure we were
- 25:06Speaker 10: going from from Tech to Charlotte and it's like, okay,
- 25:09Speaker 10: well you don't really hear about people coming out of
- 25:12Speaker 10: Charlotte unless you you know, you're Alex high Smith, who's
- 25:14Speaker 10: you know, doing his thing over in Pittsburgh and you know,
- 25:18Speaker 10: I'm I can I make my mark here and ended
- 25:21Speaker 10: up doing that, and uh, situations changed, and you know,
- 25:24Speaker 10: like when life gets going, it gets going.
- 25:26Speaker 4: But uh that's.
- 25:27Speaker 10: When again you learn how to persevere, lean on the fade,
- 25:31Speaker 10: lean on the Lord, lean on Jesus, and uh, and
- 25:34Speaker 10: and here we are. It's uh, it's never, it's never
- 25:37Speaker 10: the end. It's only just one chapter, finishing and and
- 25:40Speaker 10: and onto the next.
- 25:42Speaker 1: You started the season opener in Cleveland. It's your NFL debut.
- 25:46Speaker 1: You made tackles on the first play, second play, sixth play,
- 25:50Speaker 1: eighth play, ninth play, tenth play, and eleventh play. Seven
- 25:54Speaker 1: tackles on your first eleven NFL snaps. Did you realize
- 25:59Speaker 1: while it was happening how crazy that was?
- 26:02Speaker 4: I did not, just at that moment.
- 26:04Speaker 10: I was once I run back through that tunnel and uh,
- 26:07Speaker 10: I taking the end zone and pray one more time.
- 26:11Speaker 10: I'm pretty much suited up as a warrior at that
- 26:13Speaker 10: point and ready to play. So at that moment, I'm
- 26:17Speaker 10: just locked in and you know, putting, putting the ball
- 26:19Speaker 10: down anywhere, just making tackles, and you know, I tell
- 26:23Speaker 10: my wife or tell my family, you know, when I
- 26:24Speaker 10: when I'm out there on that field, I just kind
- 26:25Speaker 10: of go into that that that state a state of
- 26:28Speaker 10: mind where I'm not the smiley, friendly guy out there anymore.
- 26:32Speaker 10: I'm I'm I'm very lucked in, very competitive, and I
- 26:35Speaker 10: think you know that's what that's what you need in
- 26:37Speaker 10: the linebacker these days.
- 26:39Speaker 1: All right, a few wild card topics now for Demetrius Knight.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Who is your all time favorite athlete in any sport?
- 26:46Speaker 10: Bright Chris Fiano Ronaldo? Uh, soccer fan because of my
- 26:50Speaker 10: wife and my kids. But that's my wife's favorite watching
- 26:55Speaker 10: his game, he's pretty good. It's between him and you
- 26:57Speaker 10: know line on MESSI those guys getting they can get
- 26:59Speaker 10: you up on your fee, and of course it's always
- 27:01Speaker 10: righty at those games, so definite. Definitely those guys who
- 27:05Speaker 10: you know, make a lot of money doing it, So
- 27:07Speaker 10: definitely those guys.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Have you checked out an FC Cincinnati match yet?
- 27:11Speaker 4: We get them on TV, so we're on TV. We
- 27:14Speaker 4: always tune in.
- 27:15Speaker 10: We haven't got to go to one yet just because
- 27:17Speaker 10: of the busy schedule, but if we can get around
- 27:20Speaker 10: to them, we definitely plan on being there.
- 27:22Speaker 1: You shared with me that you hope to be a
- 27:24Speaker 1: movie producer someday. How long have you been interested in
- 27:28Speaker 1: the making of movies.
- 27:31Speaker 10: I've been interested in that since I was at Georgia Tech.
- 27:34Speaker 10: That's that kind of supports is why I got the
- 27:36Speaker 10: degree that I got there. Just so once football is done,
- 27:40Speaker 10: you know, I won't be one of those guys just
- 27:41Speaker 10: lingering around not knowing what I want to do. I
- 27:44Speaker 10: know once football is done, that's that's exactly what I
- 27:46Speaker 10: want to do. And no matter what that has to
- 27:50Speaker 10: start from, I have to put together movie sets first
- 27:52Speaker 10: and work my way up to that road. I'll do
- 27:55Speaker 10: it just because I believe all that's fun. It all
- 27:57Speaker 10: works together, just like football all works together. Of guys
- 28:00Speaker 10: doing there, they're one eleven. It's the same thing with
- 28:02Speaker 10: movie producing to make you know, a masterpiece essentially.
- 28:06Speaker 1: All right, final fun fact for Demetrius Knight, and this
- 28:08Speaker 1: one's kind of deep. If you could meet anybody in history,
- 28:13Speaker 1: living or deceased, who would that person be?
- 28:17Speaker 10: I had to be Jesus himself. I'd love to be
- 28:21Speaker 10: a fly on the wall just to hear him speak,
- 28:25Speaker 10: and you know, just to be in the room and
- 28:28Speaker 10: be in the areas watching them do what he does,
- 28:31Speaker 10: you know, washing them do the the miracles that only
- 28:34Speaker 10: he can do. That that would that would have to
- 28:36Speaker 10: be number one. And then if I, if I had to,
- 28:38Speaker 10: number two had to be Noah when you know he
- 28:40Speaker 10: told told them to build the arc, because I can't
- 28:42Speaker 10: imagine He's all right, I'll build a big old boat,
- 28:45Speaker 10: and you know, just to ask him about how did
- 28:48Speaker 10: he persevere, you know, making making a big old boat
- 28:51Speaker 10: going through adversity being laughed at by people around saying oh,
- 28:55Speaker 10: it's never run to rain and then it until it happens.
- 28:57Speaker 10: So uh, they definitely have to be Jesus and a
- 29:00Speaker 10: good old.
- 29:01Speaker 1: No excellent answers. I appreciate your time, best of Fleck
- 29:04Speaker 1: the rest of the year.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Yes, sir, appreciate you.
