- 0:08Speaker 2: In lineups instantly.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Forget everything that you think settled overnight because in the
- 0:14Speaker 1: last 18 hours, three more things happened with this LSU
- 0:18Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin, SEC drama and a national governing body made
- 0:24Speaker 1: a move that nobody's talking about correctly. A rival program
- 0:28Speaker 1: sent a legal warning that nobody expected, and Lane Kiffin
- 0:31Speaker 1: did something that nobody predicted after two days of daring
- 0:36Speaker 1: the SEC to stop him.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I won't bury the lead here. It seems that he.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Backed down just a little, just enough to notice, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: by the time we finish our video today, you're going
- 0:46Speaker 1: to understand exactly why and exactly what it tells you
- 0:50Speaker 1: about how scared everybody in this fight actually is. Thank
- 0:54Speaker 1: God we're just a few hours away from kickoff from
- 0:56Speaker 1: real live football, and we get this game, the LSU-Clemson
- 0:59Speaker 1: one tonight. But before then, instead of watching game day,
- 1:03Speaker 1: spend a few minutes here on College Football Addiction with me.
- 1:06Speaker 1: If you wouldn't mind, go ahead and hit that subscribe
- 1:08Speaker 1: button while you're here as well. The CFP's non-statement statement.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I want to start with the college football playoff for
- 1:15Speaker 1: a few minutes because everyone read their statement wrong yesterday.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I'll read it to you as a quote right now,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and then I'll tell you what it actually means. The
- 1:23Speaker 1: CFP strongly supports the positions and the rules of individual
- 1:28Speaker 1: conferences concerning the return to college of athletes with professional draft, contract,
- 1:34Speaker 1: or roster ties.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It sounds like a hard stance, right?
- 1:37Speaker 1: It sounds like the playoff committee just sided with the
- 1:40Speaker 1: SEC over LSU, but it didn't. Read that again, just
- 1:44Speaker 1: one more time slower. Back the video up. They said
- 1:46Speaker 1: they support the conference having positions and rules. They themselves
- 1:52Speaker 1: did not create a rule of their own. They did
- 1:53Speaker 1: not say that LSU would be banned from the playoff consideration.
- 1:57Speaker 2: They did not say anything.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Honestly, they could get them dragged into a courtroom in
- 2:01Speaker 1: Birmingham or Baton Rouge.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I don't think that's an accident.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That's a committee full of lawyers who watched what happened
- 2:08Speaker 1: to the SEC this week and said, absolutely not.
- 2:11Speaker 2: We're not doing that. Here's the move.
- 2:14Speaker 1: By refusing to create an actual rule, the college football
- 2:18Speaker 1: playoff committee can't be sued for violating one. There's nothing
- 2:21Speaker 1: to challenge. There's no bylaw to pick a part in
- 2:25Speaker 1: front of a sympathetic judge. You can't win an injunction
- 2:28Speaker 1: against a policy that doesn't exist anywhere on paper. But
- 2:32Speaker 1: this is the part that should terrify programs thinking about
- 2:35Speaker 1: testing a loophole.
- 2:37Speaker 2: The committee absolutely.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Reserved the right to leave out any team of a
- 2:41Speaker 1: 12-team field for any reason it wants. Character clause, conduct clause,
- 2:47Speaker 1: unfortunately for me, injury clause to a quarterback, coaching change clause.
- 2:53Speaker 2: We just don't think you're good enough clause.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Whatever the committee decides matters that particular year. which means
- 3:00Speaker 1: the college football playoff committee just told college football, we're
- 3:04Speaker 1: not going to fight this battle for you, but we're
- 3:06Speaker 1: also not promising you a playoff spot if you win
- 3:09Speaker 1: it your way. That's not indecision. That's the smartest possible
- 3:14Speaker 1: position for an organization that doesn't want to be the
- 3:17Speaker 1: next name on a lawsuit. Support the conferences publicly. Commit
- 3:22Speaker 1: to nothing legally. Keep every option open behind closed doors.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And listen, if you were watching any of my content
- 3:30Speaker 1: back in December of 2023, you know I can't stand
- 3:33Speaker 1: this committee for very obvious reasons. And I think they
- 3:37Speaker 1: hit this one out of the park. If you're LSU,
- 3:40Speaker 1: that statement should scare you more than anything that Greg
- 3:42Speaker 1: Sankey has said in or out of court. Because Sankey's
- 3:45Speaker 1: authority is being actively challenged and he's losing in state
- 3:49Speaker 1: court right now. The CFP's authority to simply not pick
- 3:53Speaker 1: your team, nobody can challenge that. Clemson, Jumped into the
- 3:59Speaker 1: mix here. Here's a part that surprised me just a
- 4:02Speaker 1: little bit. Clemson's general counsel sent a letter to LSU's
- 4:05Speaker 1: legal team Friday flagging language buried in the two schools'
- 4:09Speaker 1: game contract, specifically an article prohibiting the participation of ineligible players.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Now, Clemson didn't threaten to sue.
- 4:18Speaker 1: They didn't demand that LSU forfeit. They didn't even say
- 4:20Speaker 1: they wouldn't play the game. This was quieter than that
- 4:24Speaker 1: and honestly smarter than that. It was a paper trail.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Think about what it actually accomplishes. If LSU was to
- 4:31Speaker 1: roster Wright or Harris and something goes sideways later, say
- 4:36Speaker 1: the federal case in Alabama eventually rules the SEC's way,
- 4:40Speaker 1: Clemson now has a documented record showing they raised the
- 4:43Speaker 1: exact concern in writing in advance through official channels. That's
- 4:48Speaker 1: not what a program does when it's bluffing. That's what
- 4:51Speaker 1: a program does when it's protecting itself for a fight
- 4:54Speaker 1: that might come six months from now, not tonight. And
- 4:58Speaker 1: this fits everything we already know about how Dabo Sweeney
- 5:01Speaker 1: feels about the entire situation. He's already called the whole
- 5:04Speaker 1: thing embarrassing for the sport just days ago. This letter
- 5:08Speaker 1: is Clemson putting that sentiment into something with actual legal
- 5:11Speaker 1: weight behind it. So by Friday afternoon, LSU wasn't just
- 5:15Speaker 1: getting pressure from the SEC in a second lawsuit sitting
- 5:19Speaker 1: in federal court. They were getting a written warning from
- 5:21Speaker 1: a team that they were playing the next day. Then,
- 5:26Speaker 1: near midnight, LSU blinked. Talk about that in just a moment,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but I do want to give some love to our
- 5:32Speaker 1: friends at Alumni Hall. Just very quickly, if you're shopping
- 5:35Speaker 1: for gear for your favorite team, LSU, Clemson, a ton
- 5:38Speaker 1: of teams in the SEC and all over the country,
- 5:40Speaker 1: use our code CFA15. Doesn't sign you up for anything,
- 5:43Speaker 1: not a subscription, saves you 15% on the best college
- 5:46Speaker 1: gear that you can find. Appreciate Alumni Hall for their support.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Here's the twist that nobody called. LSU had until midnight,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm recording this at 1.36 in the morning on Saturday,
- 5:58Speaker 1: game day, thank God, Eastern time. They had until midnight
- 6:02Speaker 1: to submit an official roster. Everyone, Wright, Harris, national reporters,
- 6:07Speaker 1: probably half the fan base, expected both players.
- 6:09Speaker 2: To be on it through the weeks leading up to tonight. However,
- 6:12Speaker 2: they weren't on it.
- 6:14Speaker 1: LSU submitted its week one roster to the SEC without
- 6:16Speaker 1: Daquan Wright or Xavier Harris. After everything, after winning the ruling,
- 6:21Speaker 1: after a judge specifically barred the SEC from punishing schools
- 6:24Speaker 1: that use these players, after two days of Kiffin sounding
- 6:27Speaker 1: like a man who couldn't wait to prove.
- 6:29Speaker 2: A point, they pumped the brakes. Now, an important detail here,
- 6:34Speaker 2: because it's not over.
- 6:35Speaker 1: ESPN's Pete Thamel reported both players can still be added
- 6:38Speaker 1: to the roster later in the season since they're already
- 6:40Speaker 1: enrolled at LSU. This isn't LSU walking away from the plan.
- 6:44Speaker 1: This is LSU deciding that tonight wasn't the night to
- 6:47Speaker 1: test it. So why back off after winning? Well, read
- 6:51Speaker 1: between the lines. Think about everything stacked against LSU by
- 6:55Speaker 1: Friday night. The federal lawsuit in Alabama is still alive.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's still unresolved and still built on a completely different
- 7:01Speaker 1: legal theory than the one that LSU just beat in Louisiana.
- 7:05Speaker 1: The SEC already announced it plans to appeal Thursday's ruling.
- 7:09Speaker 1: The CFP just made it clear it'll do whatever it
- 7:12Speaker 1: wants with playoff selection, regardless of what any court decides.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And now Clemson's got a signed letter and a file
- 7:18Speaker 1: somewhere establishing they raised the exact issue before kickoff. Put
- 7:22Speaker 1: yourself in Kiffin's shoes for a second. You can play
- 7:25Speaker 1: two extra bodies in tonight's game in your season opener,
- 7:28Speaker 1: or you can wait. Let this legal picture clarify even
- 7:32Speaker 1: a little bit and then add them in a few
- 7:34Speaker 1: weeks to once some federal uncertainty either resolves or at
- 7:38Speaker 1: least stops being an open question hanging over every single
- 7:42Speaker 1: game you play with them on the field. One version
- 7:45Speaker 1: risks the SEC finding some way to retroactively hit LSU,
- 7:50Speaker 1: whether that be fines, suspensions, wins that suddenly come with asterisks,
- 7:54Speaker 1: exclusion from the SEC championship game, and the other version
- 7:58Speaker 1: costs you exactly nothing except for two players for one
- 8:01Speaker 1: night against LSU. an opponent that carries the same name
- 8:04Speaker 1: that your team does. The math on that is not close,
- 8:08Speaker 1: not with everything else circling. This isn't fully Kiffin losing
- 8:13Speaker 1: his nerve. I think it's Kiffin reading the room a
- 8:15Speaker 1: little bit better than he usually gets credit for. He
- 8:18Speaker 1: got everything he needed out of this fight, a legal foothold,
- 8:22Speaker 1: a roster spot held open, players still enrolled and eligible
- 8:26Speaker 1: whenever the timing's actually right. He didn't need to win
- 8:30Speaker 1: Saturday's headline, too. He needed to still be standing by October.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Where this actually goes from here, what happened next? Well,
- 8:39Speaker 1: nothing's getting settled tonight. Whatever happens on the scoreboard in
- 8:42Speaker 1: Baton Rouge, the actual answer to this fight is sitting
- 8:45Speaker 1: in a federal courthouse in Birmingham, completely untouched by anything
- 8:49Speaker 1: that's happened this week. That's still the SEC's real weapon.
- 8:53Speaker 1: That's still the case that determines whether Kiffin ever gets
- 8:56Speaker 1: to use Wright and Harris without looking over his shoulder.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And the SEC already said it's appealing the Louisiana ruling,
- 9:03Speaker 1: so even the win LSU has right now isn't final,
- 9:08Speaker 1: it's just currently standing. Everyone involved in this, the SEC,
- 9:12Speaker 1: the CFP, Clemson, LSU, spent the last 24 hours doing
- 9:16Speaker 1: the exact same thing, protecting themselves for a fight that's
- 9:20Speaker 1: not quite over yet. Most importantly, it is game day.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And somehow, after all of that, we still get football tonight.
- 9:28Speaker 1: It's the battle for Death Valley, which, if you didn't know,
- 9:31Speaker 1: is one of the funniest quirks in this entire sport
- 9:33Speaker 1: because both of these stadiums call themselves that.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Clemson's had that name since the 40s.
- 9:39Speaker 1: LSU didn't lock it in until beating Clemson in the
- 9:41Speaker 1: Sugar Bowl back in 1959. Nobody's ever actually settled which
- 9:46Speaker 1: one's the real Death Valley, and nobody ever will because
- 9:49Speaker 1: both fan bases will go to their graves insisting that
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's theirs.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Two Tiger mascots. Two Death Valleys.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Zero chance either fan base admits that the other one
- 9:58Speaker 1: has a point. So tonight, when you see people posting
- 10:02Speaker 1: go tigers and everyone's screaming that into the void, just
- 10:05Speaker 1: remember to ask which one, because after the week of
- 10:08Speaker 1: college football that we've just had, even that question doesn't
- 10:11Speaker 1: seem to have a clear answer. We appreciate you guys
- 10:14Speaker 1: for tuning in today. Enjoy the games today. Make sure
