- 2:25let me know. Hey, yeah, those letters you're picked up in the
- 2:30office to say. I was just wondering if there could have been anything important.
- 2:36We decided not to open any mail until after Christmas, and Star I
- 2:39was just wondering, Chris, I did wonder about the one from Japan.
- 2:45The return address for his private first class Dan Ferris, and he's number one
- 2:47Angel. Surely someone writing give me all away from Japan can't possibly get me
- 2:53out of your apartment on Christmas Eve? Well a letter from a soldier.
- 2:58All right, purity, I see, dear mister Valentine. I remember reading
- 3:06your aunt in the paper when I was still back home, and knowing you're
- 3:09an x GI. I think you might want to help me, because I
- 3:14sure do have a job that's too tough to handle it. In fact,
- 3:17from this distance, it's impossible. So here's something I would like you to
- 3:22do for me on Christmas Eve. Oh no, no, don't read any
- 3:24pride good enclosed. Find twenty dollars. It's to cover the expenses of taking
- 3:30out the most beautiful girl in the world, buying her an egg longer two
- 3:35listening to some Christmas carols you get the idea. Anyway, her name is
- 3:39Lucy Rand and she lives. Please don't any enclosed address. You'll be doing
- 3:46me a big favor if you'll be my foxy this Christmas Eve and write me
- 3:50all about it, very truly, Yours, Dan, Red Ferris Well Croxy
- 3:55whoa boy who was obviously pretty lonely. We were going to spend Christmas Eve.
- 4:02Come on, stop talking so much. Hey, wait a minute,
- 4:05not you and me, Redd said I should take out his we're going Christmas
- 4:11spirit is fine up to a point, but that does not include a date
- 4:15with the most beautiful girl in the world. I mean farmer houses down the
- 4:30park. You know, George, about that letter, I have a notion
- 4:32our friend Rett is really slightly suspicious about his girlfriend's well boyfriend. Such an
- 4:39idea has been known to a curt of guys who are six thousand miles away
- 4:42from home. Oh, the girl's probably set to spend this evening with her
- 4:45family, and all we'll really do is excuse me, folks. Yeah,
- 4:50I'm sorry to boy the well that is we the missus night. I have
- 4:56had it pretty tough this year, and she's a wonderful curt Like, right
- 5:00hands, what's that? It's a Christmas puddings and this just makes the best.
- 5:05Now, Oh, look, I'm afraid we're on a diet. But
- 5:09if this will help. Oh no, no, no, this is a
- 5:13very fine pudding in for only two dollars. I guess it. Dinner tomorrow
- 5:16we could. Yeah, well, I suppose a test a minute. Yeah,
- 5:20yeah, he's running the wading and all hey, wait your okay,
- 5:27wise guy, hand me back that morning, and it's wonderful Christmas pudding.
- 5:32Your wife may give, I said, give you. That's a pudding.
- 5:39Yeah, it's a rip. Miss. You're playing on the brick wrappings and
- 5:43Christmas peak? Are you crooked? Little? I have no wife, I
- 5:46have nothing, and I don't care if you call the cops and put me
- 5:51in jail. Please don't get a good meal man. They give turkey and
- 5:56chilling was on Christmas. So put me in jail and look at her.
- 6:00Oh never mind, never mind, keep the money and keep the puck.
- 6:04But you go on with this fancy chufflin you will end up in jail,
- 6:08all right, Mary Christian, Yeah, oh Brooksly, let's get going and
- 6:17play Cupid so we can get back to that tree. Well, thanks very
- 6:33much, mister Valentine. But I already have a date for the evenings.
- 6:38So you said this boy read he has no hold on whom you know,
- 6:43not at all in this book. Well, the only thing we know,
- 6:45Lucy's what he wrote is in that letter. I don't even know why I
- 6:47started writing to him, putting those silly things. A friend of a friend
- 6:51of a friend of mine is engaged to a boy in Red's outfit, and
- 6:56she said, boys me cheering up. So I wrote to him. He's
- 7:00nice and sounds like fun. But betto well, Red must have taken some
- 7:04things for granted. I guess, well, he'll just have to get over
- 7:06it. After all, I didn't make him think I care. I see,
- 7:11And as for tonight, I'm perfectly all right. I'm in good hands.
- 7:15Walter Denning is a perfect gentleman. Walter turning. You make it sound
- 7:20like a naughty word. You know him, George slightly. He's in the
- 7:25neighborhood, tall, handsome boy, sharp with a buck. He's not wolf
- 7:29by avocation and vocation and inclinations all time impresario. How's his big girlak coming
- 7:35along? Denning's delectables, isn't it playing at the Blue Grotto? He's doing
- 7:40very well, thank you. I've had a very busy day selling in a
- 7:45department store on the day before Christmas is wonderful for a girl's feet. So
- 7:48if you don't mind me, this record here under the trowler. It's nothing.
- 7:51The label set made it the YMCA Tokyo Japan. Something Red sent you.
- 7:57Yes, it came today, a Christmas card sort of. You can
- 8:01hear it if you want. There's nothing too personal in it. I'll do
- 8:05it. Hello, Lucy. I don't really know what to saying to this
- 8:13thing. I guess pretty soon it's going to be Christmas, but here it
- 8:16isn't very much, so it fully gets to do a lot of thinking and
- 8:20hoping and remembering. When I do that, I keep thinking, mostly of
- 8:24the things you wrote me in your letters. I really don't even know what
- 8:28you look like, but I can imagine why. I imagine is well,
- 8:33when you listen to some Christmas music or see a guy in a funny red
- 8:37suit ringing a little bell in the street, I hope you'll think of me.
- 8:41Well, I'm running out of time, and so I guess he overran
- 8:48time. Yeah, Well, come on, Asa, let's see I didn't
- 8:54mean to shoot my mom. I'll this donny guy. I know that's what
- 8:58people may think of him, but he's in love with me. He's sincerely
- 9:03in love with me. Are you sure, Lucy? Wait a minute here,
- 9:09take a look at this. Walter gave it to me a week ago.
- 9:13I notice you're not wearing it. Well, I told him I wasn't
- 9:16quite sure of how I felt. He wanted me to take the ring and
- 9:20wait, so I'm giving my answer tonight. And well he's waiting for a
- 9:24divorce though he isn't free to marry me yet, but he will be in
- 9:28a month or so. He's taking his troop on a road tour the day
- 9:31after tomorrow, and he wants to give me a job and let me go
- 9:33along. He says he can make a dancer out of me and then we
- 9:37can be together in the meantime. Yeah, it's a beautiful diamond, yes,
- 9:43isn't it. Walter really has been speak to me honest with me,
- 9:48do you understand? Sure? Thanks a lot for taking the trouble to come
- 9:54here on Christmas Eve, But really I am quite all right and there's nothing
- 9:58to be done about red good as Thanks goodbye. Oh hi there, Denny,
- 10:20what I watched this? Never would pass up a free drink? Say
- 10:24how about having a drink with us Melantine, isn't it Yeah, that's right.
- 10:28Oh, and this is miss Brooks, my assistant, Miss Brooks,
- 10:33well charming, want you to join us at the bar, only if you'll
- 10:37be my guests. I never knew Valantine had such a beautiful associate. Well,
- 10:43thank you. Yes, So perhaps some day I might give you a
- 10:46call and we could have a talk. Well, that would be nice.
- 10:50Yeah, Say, how are you doing with the horses lately, Walter?
- 10:54Oh, I haven't been playing the horses. Gave him up. I see
- 10:58a beautiful girl like you, Miss Brooks, should be able to wield a
- 11:01great power over the life of any man. I should any man who isn't
- 11:05absolutely blind. Your line is still pretty smooth as Brandon Lion. Oh no,
- 11:11it's just that I guess I'm setimental. I'd like to play Cupid.
- 11:18Yes, you see, I'm in love, practically engaged to a lovely girl.
- 11:22Ah really, yes, you don't know her, but she's Oh she's
- 11:26wonderful. Lucy. Isn't that a lovely name? Yes? Indeed, so
- 11:33I want everyone to be in love and happy. Now tell me, miss
- 11:35Brooks, doesn't this guy Valentine ever notice you? All right? Now,
- 11:41what'll we have to drink. Well, I think we'll skip it a day,
- 11:45if you don't mind, Miss Brooks. I thought some of the time,
- 11:48all right. A matter of fact, I was leaving to see Lucy.
- 11:54Did you want to speak to me about anything? No? I guess
- 11:56not so long, goodbye and very Christmas. So you ought to read the
- 12:03proof for yourself. While the Danning is still not Oh well, guys like
- 12:05that don't change, not even when they fall in love. It's donn even
- 12:11so he wants to buy us a drink. I'm hard to convince the dambols.
- 12:13And he's a wolf, and no pretty girl is safe with him,
- 12:16so he wants to play chupid for another mon al right, okay, okay,
- 12:20okay, I heard him, Vagina. It's tough on read, and
- 12:22maybe you don't like the idea, but I think we just have to get
- 12:26all this. Yeah, I guess. Now let's go back to my place
- 12:28and finished decorating the tree. Huh wow, lights are all set. Wait
- 12:46a minute, I'll turn them up. Oh it's so beautiful. Yeah,
- 12:52all wrong, it's so peaceful, darling Christmas Eve. Frankly, I'm glad
- 12:58all the excitements, God so am I can I speak too soon. Look,
- 13:07just you quiet and go away. We've got to do something about this.
- 13:16Oh yes, obviously Valentine. Your name George Valentine. Yeah, that's
- 13:22right. Once you come in there. I hate to do this on Christmas
- 13:26Eve. So he looks real pretty in there too. There's a warrant out
- 13:30for your arrestments to Valentine. Arrest you must be some mistake. I take
- 13:33it easy. How should I know what for? There's a warrant all right,
- 13:37sworn out by somebody named Lucy Rand. Sorry is that all you're gonna
- 13:50keep on saying? We'll see. I don't feel terrible about less of variation
- 13:54at least. So why on earth would I steal your engagement work? Don't
- 13:58you see? I did know who you were. Not really, I'm not
- 14:01cutting here with a letter from Red was just a trick. And I did
- 14:05show you the ring and then it would gone. Look now that the police
- 14:09told me you're all now, Lucy, I realized that the ring must be
- 14:11an expensive one, and you were upset. But I still know. It's
- 14:13not that I'm supposed to give my answer to Walter to night and I well,
- 14:20I don't want to be influenced because I don't have his ring. You
- 14:22mean you have some doubt about what you should say to Walter. I didn't
- 14:28say that, now, George, stop it. Wally Dinning seems to be
- 14:31a perfectly termed man. He is. I know he is varying from red
- 14:35record he sent you. That didn't make you doubt your decision a little to
- 14:39him, I can't say Walter and tell him his ringing has been stolen.
- 14:45Na, dear mister Valentine. We will do whatever you can, but after
- 14:48all, it's nothing that can be accomplished in a minute. You're sure it
- 14:50isn't just miss laid Lucy. No, no, it isn't. After I
- 14:54showed you the ring, I put it down a minute and then the phone
- 14:56rang. It's out in the hall, you know I want to answer it.
- 15:01Oh. The ironic part of it is it was a wrong number.
- 15:05And then when I came back, the ring was gone. Where you were
- 15:07at the phone, you couldn't see who went into your room, so it
- 15:11might have been anyone here in the apartment. Huh. Yes, But well
- 15:13then my neighbor's good, respectable people, and it's Christmas. Why, Okay,
- 15:22okay, I'll see what I can do. Take it easy. Oh
- 15:24dear, this is probably Walter. Well, there's nothing you can do but
- 15:28let him in. Well, our friend, mister Denning is surprise to those
- 15:33is not really sure of a feelings are that guy? Maybe if he finds
- 15:37out about the ring and acts the way I thank you joy saying Hubert bread
- 15:39is one thing, but ranks think that some friends of mine, this Brook
- 15:46Valentine, Why hello again? Yeah, I didn't realize you knew each other.
- 15:50See let's all of us get dressed up and out and celebrate Christmas in
- 15:54real style. A good idea. Oh yeah, well that just sounds fine,
- 15:58But I'm afraid I won't be able to join after all of time to
- 16:00look for that ring of yours. Lucy R what's he talking about? I'm
- 16:06sorry, Lucy, but I don't think you can keep that a secret from
- 16:08water anyway. After all of them take days, weeks if the ring will
- 16:11ever be fine? Well, I'm so terribly sorry, Walter ring that beautiful
- 16:17ring you gave me. It must have been stolen. I don't know what
- 16:21to say. Don't say anything, darling, but the rain. I know
- 16:25how much it must have cost you a lot. Do you think it's really
- 16:27important? Either. I don't want anything in the world to make you unhappy
- 16:30for one minute. You're more important to me than all the rings in the
- 16:34world. So come on, snap out of it, honey, I mean,
- 16:40don't you. Of course I do. Go home and get up,
- 16:45darling, and pick me up later. We're going right up and celebrate our
- 16:51engagement with all without the ring. Why, Darling, I still wish you
- 16:57folks would join the party. Oh nice, come on, brou Sitney coming
- 17:15the jokes. The way he acted was so sweet. Not a peep out
- 17:18of him. Any girl would melt such a sign of devotion. Yeah,
- 17:22I thought he'd yelled like a stuck peggy. Let's get out of here,
- 17:26go back to my apartment and finish decorating the tree. No, that's beginning
- 17:29to sound like a chorus of a song. Let's go back and decorate the
- 17:32tree. Now, I suppose that's always can't What is it? Look in
- 17:37that corner, the neatly wrapped Christmas pudding. Somebody in this house must have
- 17:41bought it and threw it away. Could be let's still unwrapped, So maybe
- 17:45our little salesman came here to sell it threw it away himself when he got
- 17:49something that would bring him more money than a thousand puddings. He must have
- 17:52thrown Lucy's ring. Huh, he was headed for jail. If he isn't
- 17:56in jail already, maybe we can get the ring back in a hurry,
- 18:00and maybe if we do, it might still keep Lucy from being too grateful
- 18:03for Walter's understanding. Your age isn't in jail? Are you sure? Angel?
- 18:17I asked Johnson to help, and he checked. It looks more and
- 18:19more like shorty. Huh. Look for the neighborhood paunchhot Now they're closed,
- 18:22but by attended tells me there's one on VC Street that's not only open all
- 18:26the time, but they're careful of what it buys. See you later.
- 18:40One nineteen sound that should be right down. Oh h and I sell a
- 18:48Christmas pudding in that paunch shot friendly, remember me, shorty? Excuse me,
- 18:55I'm in You wouldn't want to be impolite and leave me? What's your
- 18:56busted? You want to turn something gonna my friend, something that you don't
- 19:00want to weigh on your conscience. I don't know what I said. Wait,
- 19:04let's get into this store. No, come on, well, my
- 19:08goods and going all Right's all right, madam? My friend here had an
- 19:14eggknocked your annyway. I don't have anything now on this. Please let me
- 19:19go all still while I make sure for myself. Give me that no doubt
- 19:29Santa Claus gave you this ring because you've been a good boy or you?
- 19:30What are you gonna do with me? We're gonna take a walk together.
- 19:33No, no, come on, do you have it back now? And
- 19:37just let me go. You wanted to go to jail and you're gonna get
- 19:41your wish, but you'll throw the book at and you with this. I
- 19:45just saw the door open and the ring was on the table. I'm no
- 19:48criminal, mystery mister. It's a holiday, so I say people still a
- 19:56mind Christmas cheeses and you can be nice to sorry, hey you shuck?
- 20:11Oh he would run in there, all those trees not jumping in the shelf

- 21:08it. Oh yeah, that fell. I must have been hiding in the
- 21:14trees, and he's stolen my ranch. Yeah. I was fixing my truck
- 21:17when all is started. I had a wrench land on the top of the
- 21:18cab on ye wait, huh, yes, I didn't really expect to find
- 21:27it. What are you talking about? Charmed circle, a lover's bow,
- 21:33a maiden stream. Hey, you ought to find yourself a doc right away.
- 21:36Oh thanks. I gotta give the police a description of a pudding salesman.
- 21:51But mister Valentine, what makes you think that the police will catch up
- 21:55with him tonight. Oh of course, I'm not sure they will, but
- 21:56I gave him a pretty good description. Well, I'm sure the police don't
- 22:00need our help, Valentine. Besides, Lucy and I have a table waiting
- 22:03for us at the club. Anyway, it doesn't matter now, just when
- 22:06we get the ring that now that I'm sure. I am sure, Daline,
- 22:10and you said that before. I'll get the tickets tomorrow, Lucy.
- 22:12It will be a wonderful tour and you'll be wonderful in the show, Darling.
- 22:17Yeah, yeah, everything, I'll be wonderful you. You won't forget
- 22:22to write the red English. No, no, I won't forget. And
- 22:26he'll understand. I know he will. Oh, George, mister hell I
- 22:29said he'd be here in a little while. Mister Helen, that's a friend.
- 22:32Now sit down, all of you. We're gonna wait for this fever
- 22:37Christmas. Officer. And I didn't fluck that guy. Surely, Well it
- 22:41seems to me we're in luck. Wow. Well, well look who's here.
- 22:45This is wonderful. Come on, get in there, sheeper. He
- 22:48says his name, Chef gilt Nah, welcome home, Chep. I didn't
- 22:52hit you, a Valentine. I just kept on running. Now, I
- 22:56haven't got that room. You search the opficer room and didn't you. Yeah,
- 23:00yeah, yeah, the ring wasn't not a mister Valentine. You had
- 23:03plenty of time to staway somewhere. That's would probably happened. He will talk
- 23:07with him down the station house and we'll let you know, Amous Ryan in
- 23:11just a minute, Officer, I'd like to talk to you and mister Denning
- 23:14a moment if I could out in the hall. Sure, Oh well,
- 23:17we'll leave the door open. The ladies will be all right, was shorty?
- 23:25What's on your mind? BELLA? A few things? Yeah, things
- 23:29like what like, would ship who's small and kind of puny, really be
- 23:33the one who slugged me? Oh, it doesn't take much to swing a
- 23:37heavy ranch. Naw, But it was lying on top of the cab of
- 23:40that truck. Sheper'd be too short even to see it up there. I
- 23:44don't understand. And another thing, shep knew he was facing a long prison
- 23:48term. Now would he take a chance on knocking me down to get that
- 23:49ring again? It's it's kind of giving yourself mighty short odds. What are
- 23:53you driving there? The fact that I felt there was something very fishy when
- 23:57you didn't act human, Water human? Yeah exactly. I mean when I
- 24:02told you about the ring being stolen, No matter how much in love a
- 24:04guy is, he'd still react normally be shocked. You're angry anything except the
- 24:10perfect gentleman with a noble speech, unless it's a reason. You mean,
- 24:14Yeah, you followed me ever since I left Lucy, didn't you? Water?
- 24:17This may be taking another long shot, but you don't mind if we
- 24:19look through your pockets. Do you're handsome? I certainly do it. I'd
- 24:22like to see you all. This is just my night for not taking care
- 24:25of Wait a minute, i'll run you in for assault. You'll keep out
- 24:27of this water, Okay? Can we play some more? Stop? Stop
- 24:33it right? Yeah, something going on out here. I'm afraid you ladies
- 24:41are in time just for the finish? Ira Are you leaving us? Water?
- 24:45What? Or do you want to stick around? You don't mind if
- 24:51I keep the ring? Do you just as a souvenir? Well, yes,
- 24:56yes, of course. Somebody tell me what this is all about.
- 25:00That's what I want to know. Please, where are you going? I'm
- 25:04I'm sorry, Lucy, goodbye, goodbye everybody the water. Okay, Lucy.
- 25:12Now look, mister Heller is a jeweler, a friend of mine,
- 25:15an expert. I was hoping we'd have this ring to show him. Why
- 25:18would Walter do all that just to get his ring? That I would just
- 25:22so embarrassed? Why would he oh get the idea? Oh that's what it
- 25:30is listening Rain, talk of engaging. Walter just got caught with his real
- 25:36intention, showing that's all only done only proposal tony character. I would say
- 25:42fool. Now you'll be all that everything, he'll be all right, Yeah,
- 25:48you gotta call it the squall Christmas breadst be What about me? What
- 25:52am I going to do with the love repster? And oh my ship,
- 25:56I'm surprised at you. If this ring is worth a few dollars. You
- 26:00didn't commit very much of a crime, now, did you. Oh yeah,
- 26:06sure you might even get just what you wanted from the judge. There's
- 26:08long enough in jail to see you through the holidays. Pree turkey. Remember
- 26:12maybe it's not such a bad Christmas all around. I I never made one
- 26:30of those records before. Oh, it's very sceptable here. You just go
- 26:33in one of those foods. Then you draw the curtains, and you're along
- 26:37with the one who's gonna hear what you have to say. No, I
- 26:40want you went in this book to hear the well, I really do,
- 26:45okay, and you can't. We want to stay here, rand, I
- 26:56don't really know what to say in it. Sing. Well, maybe this
- 27:02kind of a sudden idea. It's almost midnight, Christmas is almost here anyway.
- 27:11What I mean is I've always thought the nighty Claws with a pretty old
- 27:15fellow with white whiskers and a big stomach. He isn't at all. He's
- 27:22a much younger man and he has no beard. Tomorrow rest, I'm going
- 27:30to send you a long letter right now. Yeah, there's so much I
- 27:34want to say too, And can we go again? That's deferent the tree
- 27:41Hey, you know back in that tree line, I've picked up the one
- 27:45thing. I mean. Let's don't go white, chill. Merry Christmas,
- 28:08everybody. This is John Heaston, and right now i'd like to introduce a
- 28:12friend of yours, George Valentine, but by his real name, Bob Dailey.
- 28:17Well, this is our fifth Christmas together with you, and once again
- 28:19this year, speaking for myself and for everyone in our past, we'd like
- 28:25to wish you the nicest, happiest Christmas ever. Yes, friends, and
- 28:29to that, i'd like to add this message. Would this be a very
- 28:33merry Christmas for you and yours, and that the true spirit of Christmas,
- 28:37peace on earth will come to pass for all men all over the world.
- 28:55This is the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome back.
- 29:47What a great story. Plus we get to hear Bob I barely sing.
- 29:52Uh. It can be tough to do a really good uh Christmas uh story
- 30:00on a mystery show. Now, a couple of ways you can do at
- 30:03One I think is the big little Jesus approach from Dragnet, and there are
- 30:10also some that either are unmistery like or on the other side just seem a
- 30:17little too out of staff with the feeling of the season, and you kind
- 30:21of wish afterwards that they had just made it a generic episode instead. I
- 30:27think they really struck a good balance with this episode. Clearly there was a
- 30:33mystery to sault, but also kind of a heart warming plot, particularly as
- 30:38there were many soldiers deployed at that time, and just I thought overall a
- 30:45very classy episode, one of the better Christmas ones we've heard. Of course,
- 30:52next year at Christmas time we'll be listening to a five part Johnny doll
- 30:56Or Christmas episode with Bob Bailey, so we've got that to look forward to.
- 31:00Well that I'll do it for today, Join us tomorrow for the Blue
- 31:06Carbuncle on Sherlock Holmes, and we'll be back here on Wednesday with another episode.
- 31:11Let George do it in the meantime. Sandraw comments to Box thirteen at
