- 0:15Every week we're going to take you through how to build an
- 0:17audience of buyers mastering your marketing message and
- 0:20making offers. Welcome back everybody.
- 0:23Today I want to talk about purpose.
- 0:25And you know, it's a rare thing when I invite somebody onto our
- 0:28platform to talk about purpose because I think it is a lived
- 0:32thing versus the thing you quest for and something ethereal way
- 0:36in the distance. But we wanna talk about
- 0:38harnessing purpose and in particular, using it to inspire
- 0:42connection. And I think connection is the
- 0:44name of the game. This is not a new thing for a
- 0:46new year, new season, new month, new day, whatever.
- 0:49This has been an embodiment of a principle that I've lived my
- 0:53whole life around, and I want a megaphone on it in this new
- 0:58year. And so today I'm super excited
- 1:00to introduce you to our guest. This is Melissa Force
- 1:03Shackleford, who's going to come to us to really help us
- 1:05understand in the marketing lane, how do we actually live
- 1:10purpose and how do we keep connection front and centre to
- 1:12win, Win for ourselves and our values, win for our clients and
- 1:17win in a way that's really competitive without competing
- 1:20with each other. So welcome.
- 1:21I'm super excited to have you here.
- 1:22It's so excited to be here, Christine, I tell you I love
- 1:25your episodes. I've been watching them for a
- 1:27long time and, and really one of your episodes even inspired me
- 1:30to start my own YouTube channel. So I attribute that to you and
- 1:34to one of your guests, So. I love that.
- 1:37That's awesome to hear you guys. This is it.
- 1:39So if you're listening wow and you're thinking I feel inspired
- 1:42by either content, please make make the move.
- 1:45You know, this is the year that big impact is possible.
- 1:49This is the moment and it all starts by you showing up and I'm
- 1:54super grateful. That's a really lovely meet cute
- 1:56in my business. No, it absolutely is.
- 1:58And it's it's what you said. You make impact by showing up,
- 2:02and that's what sort of one of your episodes inspired me to
- 2:05show up even further on a YouTube channel.
- 2:07I love that because guys showing up is the hardest bit.
- 2:10It's easy to do lip service. But I will tell you, getting in
- 2:13the room, recognizing what rooms you're in, who you're
- 2:16surrounding yourself with. I heard something great in my
- 2:18network, Scott McGregor, who is a which is a big fan of the work
- 2:22he does. He said if your network is
- 2:24costing, you're coasting too. And I thought I am not going to
- 2:28be in the coasting lane. It's not the way I roll.
- 2:31And I'm glad to see you coming to play and saying step into a
- 2:34bigger game. So let's talk about this whole
- 2:37word because I think it's bandied around a lot.
- 2:39I think nobody knows what it means and it means a million
- 2:41things. So just start with an
- 2:43orientation piece. What does purpose mean, and how
- 2:46do you see it in the lane of practical marketing?
- 2:49And I appreciate what you said at the beginning that purpose,
- 2:52purpose is very personal to everyone.
- 2:54And it's not something that I can teach you what my purpose
- 2:56is. I can just show you.
- 2:58And I, I did write a book about purpose as it relates to
- 3:02marketing. And in the book I, I defined
- 3:03purpose as the authentic, motivated, motivating reason for
- 3:07being, the force that gives direction, meaning, and
- 3:10connection to both your work and your life.
- 3:14And I think about that really the motivating reason for being.
- 3:17I can use that as a person what what gives direction and meaning
- 3:21to my life. I can also use that as an
- 3:24organization or for my brand. I think this is important
- 3:29because it's not outside. That's what I hear when you say
- 3:32this like it is a, what I would call a guiding North Star.
- 3:36It is. It's like a fingerprint and it
- 3:40is something unique to you. So be aware of other people
- 3:45trying to put ownership on or trying to make you wear a coat
- 3:48that's the wrong size, the wrong shape, the wrong style for you.
- 3:52I love this as an orientation. And I think that's so true.
- 3:55And I think I'm going to just use that the fingerprint.
- 3:58I think that's, that's beautiful, especially when
- 4:00you're thinking about whether yourself and your brand or your
- 4:04organization and your organization's brand.
- 4:06Every time you have to think about it as really being unique
- 4:09and it needs to be your own Northstar.
- 4:13And for myself as a, as a solopreneur, I, I think about
- 4:17myself as my brand and what do I want to be known for?
- 4:21And I have to start with what gives me meaning.
- 4:25OK, so let's ask how do you actually start this journey of
- 4:28this? Because I think the the
- 4:30challenge in the world that's out there right now selling you
- 4:35complexity, selling you a version A1 size fits all.
- 4:39Where do you actually start so that it can show up authentic so
- 4:43it can show up as a direction marker?
- 4:46Because I think a lot of people would say sounds awesome, sounds
- 4:51also like the Unicorn. How do I get here?
- 4:53Alone, it shouldn't. I think it really starts with
- 4:55yourself. And this is where I appreciate a
- 4:57lot of your conversations because you do talk about
- 5:00purpose and how to find your purpose and you, you live it.
- 5:03And so I think that's a great example.
- 5:05But for me, in my experience, I can think about myself, it's
- 5:10really taking the time to understand what motivates me,
- 5:13what are my values, what's important to me.
- 5:15And frankly, that's kind of how I became a solopreneur is I
- 5:18realized that I was in situations that didn't match my
- 5:21values and I wanted to live my values and I wanted to have that
- 5:25be part of my work. So I think for if you're
- 5:29thinking about your own self and your own values, what motivates
- 5:32you, what gets you up in the morning?
- 5:33And it's taking that time to think about that.
- 5:36What fills you up and is the time during the day is what
- 5:41you're doing during the day matching those values are what
- 5:45fills you up. And if you're doing things that
- 5:47don't fill you up, that don't follow your Northstar, then
- 5:50maybe you need to rethink it and maybe take just some kind of
- 5:53starting with just some small actions that say I'm going to do
- 5:57this every day because it really matches my North Star and it
- 6:01fills me up with meeting. And you could start small and
- 6:03it'll get bigger. The same thing for a brand.
- 6:06When you're starting to think about marketing these days,
- 6:09consumers know whether it's business to business or just
- 6:13general population consumers. They know when you're being
- 6:18performative. They know when you're not
- 6:20aligned with your values because they today want to work with
- 6:24organizations and brands that match their values.
- 6:27And I think stating them is key. You said you have to jump off
- 6:33the deep end. Guys.
- 6:35This is 2 things you're doing. You're slowing down enough to
- 6:38check inside and my actions and where I'm spending my day.
- 6:45Aligned, congruent, disruptive, at odds.
- 6:52And then if you are listening, listening to what you hear as
- 6:58the answer to this, and it does feel like a deep ending, guys,
- 7:01you know, there isn't necessarily to your point, a
- 7:04magic pill that's going to say, I can just change everything in
- 7:06a nanosecond. But this freedom comes this this
- 7:11inspired purpose comes from a decision.
- 7:17It's all about being decided, saying who I am, this is my one
- 7:21shot, this is my life, this is my here.
- 7:24I'm here for a reason. Don't be sloppy with the gift.
- 7:29And echoes back to what she said about impact.
- 7:32It's making that first step. And that's how you make the
- 7:35impact. You take that first step towards
- 7:38living OHK kind of a life and having a business that matches
- 7:42your values and that fills you up.
- 7:44And like you said, you can't just do it all in one step.
- 7:46But if you take that one small action every day, then it'll
- 7:49grow into more and more and more.
- 7:51And when I think about my work as a a marketing leader and how
- 7:55I coach my clients and I coach organizations, it's so important
- 8:00that they start with knowing themselves and what they stand
- 8:03for. Professor Brand.
- 8:04And it doesn't have to mean that there are some big global black
- 8:07brand like Patagonia who has a mission to save the planet.
- 8:11You don't have to be like that. It can just be that you want to
- 8:14help your customers live their best lives or your customers do
- 8:19something. You just need to know and be
- 8:21really clear on that. And then as you align your
- 8:25marketing messaging with that, that's where the magic happens
- 8:28and that's where you can really build those strong lifelong
- 8:32connections with your customers. And honestly, that's what we all
- 8:36want to do. I think we say it all the time
- 8:39in our business. I say it to my clients all the
- 8:41time. You get hired for your opinion,
- 8:43you get hired for your values because they're the two things
- 8:46that are non negotiable. I am looking for a gap to be
- 8:50filled if I'm a client looking to provide or buy into a service
- 8:53provider. And I'm looking for somebody who
- 8:56I believe will be safe, will will live in principles that I
- 9:01can respect and live with. And when we do that, people have
- 9:07to use you. I think you said that this this
- 9:09great Spidey sense, if it's out, we hear it like a really
- 9:14dissonant cord. We feel it, we observe it.
- 9:17We're like, well, if it's off over here, there could be a
- 9:21pattern that's off over many places.
- 9:23And so you're saying, slow down. You're saying check in with
- 9:26yourself. And I want to tackle something
- 9:30here because you say, you know, it can take some time and it
- 9:32doesn't always stay true North. So talk to me a little bit about
- 9:36how and what best practices we can have that keep us here.
- 9:41Because purpose isn't set, it isn't one point it can evolve.
- 9:44And how do we tackle that? And, and all of us are evolving
- 9:47all the time and brands and organizations are evolving over
- 9:51time. So for me, it really comes down
- 9:53to a practice of alignment. So when you're aligning with
- 9:57those values and when your team is as well, you can feel it.
- 10:02And that's when the magic happens.
- 10:03And so for a mark, from a marketing perspective, you've
- 10:07oftentimes got a designer and a writer and someone building your
- 10:11website. Making sure everyone is aligned
- 10:13to that true north is really important.
- 10:16And as you evolve, it's keeping them in alignment with that
- 10:20evolution. And part of it a little bit is
- 10:23giving yourself and your team grace to be able to evolve over
- 10:28time because sometimes whatever your values were and what you
- 10:33stood for or five years ago are very different today.
- 10:35I think about myself as a marketing leader, very different
- 10:40today than I was five years ago. My what I prioritize and how I,
- 10:44what I see works is very different.
- 10:47And so I've had to give myself grace to also evolve myself and
- 10:51what is my purpose. Same thing for my teams and same
- 10:55thing for the clients that I coach.
- 10:57We need to have a little bit of grace with that, but making sure
- 10:59everyone is aligned, moving in the right direction.
- 11:03I mean, that's also how you get really high performing
- 11:07organizations because I mean all there's all kinds of data out
- 11:09there that shows purpose driven organizations perform better.
- 11:12And a lot of that is because the alignment with their employees
- 11:16and everybody is aligned to what is their purpose and what is
- 11:20their ultimate goal. As we evolve, I'm curious your
- 11:25perspective on how do we talk about in evolution that's in
- 11:30place and what best practices can we have?
- 11:33Because truthfully, there is such an important thing that
- 11:37happens, recognizing the shift, recognizing that while we used
- 11:43to do this and it was acceptable and desired, as we cast forward,
- 11:48as we look to the horizon, I'm not only communicating it, I'm
- 11:53inviting you to step here and I will need to potentially course
- 11:58correct if we slide back to that previous iteration.
- 12:02So in organizations and as a business and as a business
- 12:04owner, you've said like I've had lots of changes.
- 12:07How do you actually start to say explicitly, yeah, not cool,
- 12:13That's an old version. We're not doing it anymore.
- 12:14What do you think we need to do? Because I think breaking it down
- 12:19in nuts and bolts and really basic steps is so important
- 12:21here. I agree with that.
- 12:24I think that's such a powerful point that you just made.
- 12:28What I think about just overall for a brand and their marketing,
- 12:32the marketing and the brand needs to be living and breathing
- 12:36and it's not something that's stagnant.
- 12:37So that's what gives you the opportunity to honor regular
- 12:41basis to go back and check to say, OK, this is what we've
- 12:46defined as our mission vision values.
- 12:47This is what we've defined as our value proposition.
- 12:50That shouldn't be something that sits on the shelf.
- 12:52It needs to be a living breathing thing.
- 12:54So when we think about evolving and not harkening back to what
- 13:00we were in years past, making sure we take those off the shelf
- 13:04and we re examine those on a regular basis to say, does this
- 13:08mission vision values still fit with what we want to stand for,
- 13:13what we want to be known for, what we want customers to know
- 13:17us for? And does our value proposition,
- 13:19which kind of ties to that what our customers know us as, does
- 13:24that still resonate? And every year or on a regular
- 13:29basis to be able to take that off the shelf and ask those
- 13:31questions and to be able to make sure all of that is an evolving
- 13:37thing is really important. And beyond that with looking at
- 13:42your brand and your marketing and you've talked a lot about
- 13:45this on your different episodes, is looking at what does success
- 13:48mean? So are we still being
- 13:50successful? And if we're not, we can start
- 13:54to take those extra kind of extra time to really examine
- 13:58what is our mission, vision values, what is our value
- 14:01proposition, what do we want to be known for and what do our
- 14:05customers think we're known for. Intent is everything here.
- 14:11I as a practice, something I model, I do it myself, I model
- 14:14it to every client that comes through my my services is we
- 14:16take what I call CEO days. And the big part of this is the
- 14:19check with the orientation, what brings oxygen, what are we
- 14:23really excited about, not the nuts and bolts of tasks.
- 14:27This isn't a catch up date. This is an admin.
- 14:28This isn't very much a vision focused exercise and I do it
- 14:31personally quarterly. Am I heading in the right
- 14:35direction? Am I climbing the right mountain
- 14:38and the right people with me? Am I equipping them to be
- 14:42successful? And what does success look like
- 14:44in the next 90 days? And when we do this, I will tell
- 14:48you the butterflies and the I love my life and gosh, this is
- 14:53so cool. And I have the best business out
- 14:55there always comes to the forefront.
- 14:57And that's why, of course, social media always like
- 15:00champagne happens a lot in your life.
- 15:02I'm like, I love what I'm doing. And it is because I check with
- 15:05my values. It is because the lived
- 15:07experience is here. And I think what you say here is
- 15:09so critical. Intent is 1 and asking your
- 15:14customers, asking your peers. Am I living what I say?
- 15:19And please, you guys gotta be brave here.
- 15:21Jump in the deep end with us. You're not always gonna get a
- 15:24Yes you are. And sometimes the customers
- 15:27think of you in a different way than you want to be known for.
- 15:29And when there has that dissonance, you need to pull
- 15:32that together because it's so important to have that be in
- 15:36alignment. And what was it?
- 15:39Jeff Bezos says your brand is what people say about you when
- 15:41you're not in the room. So it's not what you're
- 15:44defining, it's what they're defining about you.
- 15:46And so if you nailed it when you said it's, you might not always
- 15:50hear from your customers. They might always say about you
- 15:53what you want them to, but that gives you some work to do.
- 15:57And that what you're talking about, like those CEO days,
- 16:00taking that time to to reassess, it's really also pulling it all
- 16:05into alignment and making sure there's that alignment.
- 16:08And as a marketer, that's gold. I just see that as gold when you
- 16:12have everyone from the top down in alignment and your customers
- 16:16also are talking about you in a way that you want them to.
- 16:20And inclusivity is a big part of this because you've said it's,
- 16:23it's one thing to cast a vision that's kind of the easy bit, my
- 16:26friends, just so we're clear ideas is the easy bit of the
- 16:29business world, but it's the loop.
- 16:31It's the feedback loop from customers, clients.
- 16:33And I'd love to you for you to talk about this inclusive
- 16:37communication as a competitive advantage and how important it
- 16:40is to hold the line when you do have a step outside of what you
- 16:46hope for. Because I said, I remember
- 16:49saying to everyone, I said, if you're standard is, is so low
- 16:51that you always hit it, that's a problem.
- 16:55I don't know any business owner, myself included that we don't
- 16:57have moments going well. That was rather epically falling
- 17:00short of our capability and our expectations.
- 17:03Let's clean up and let's check the systems.
- 17:06But for you, because you've got a great track record in this,
- 17:09you're someone I respect in this world.
- 17:11How do we how do we tackle this piece?
- 17:14I, I think first of all, I just want to call out what you said
- 17:18is that nobody hits it every time and everybody has missteps.
- 17:23And when we talk about marketing, certainly I can look
- 17:26back on my career and I, I see missteps, but that's how we
- 17:28learn and we grow and we get better when we acknowledge those
- 17:32missteps. So thank you for calling that
- 17:33out and being transparent because so many people, you
- 17:37know, we have on, on social media, everyone has this curated
- 17:40success and people forget that in reality, we all make
- 17:43missteps. And even when we're talking
- 17:45about inclusivity from a marketing perspective, I've made
- 17:49missteps, my teams have made missteps, but a lot of it is
- 17:52taking the time to reexamine and to do better the next time.
- 17:56And that that's how we all get better.
- 17:58So I I'm absolutely 100% with you on that.
- 18:02From an inclusive marketing standpoint, I think it's, it's
- 18:06not only the right thing to do, but it's also very strategic
- 18:09because we need to all think about broadening who our
- 18:13customers are and we can think about inclusivity from a number
- 18:17of different ways. I work a lot with healthcare and
- 18:21healthcare adjacent organizations.
- 18:23And so oftentimes I remind them that there's 25% of the world
- 18:28that's living with a disability of some sort.
- 18:30And we have to remember that that's an audience that's 25% of
- 18:35the, the population. We want to be able to work with
- 18:38us. And so that comes down to things
- 18:40like making sure your website is accessible, making sure all of
- 18:44your videos have close captions mean just some very basic things
- 18:48to make sure you're opening up what you're doing and opening up
- 18:52your communication to the broadest possible audience.
- 18:55They they really just should be table stakes in this world today
- 19:00with modern marketing techniques.
- 19:01But also people need to remember, not only is it the
- 19:04right thing to do, but this is a huge population that we want to
- 19:08make sure our message can reach. I just think you said my
- 19:12favorite line ever inclusivity is table stakes.
- 19:15Guys, getting in the room and broadening that room is a
- 19:19responsibility and I want to invite you to choose it.
- 19:24I have someone in my network who is my barometer for this.
- 19:30I get a lot of emails that don't talk about failing here.
- 19:33I get a lot of emails saying I can't read all of this because
- 19:37I'm visually impaired to a degree.
- 19:39Some things are good, some things are not.
- 19:41And I appreciate every single time I get this because it
- 19:45reminds me to raise my standard. It reminds me to think broadly,
- 19:50not through my lens, but the lens of my next customer.
- 19:53And to your point, this is smart money.
- 19:56This is also great heart and it won't happen by accident.
- 20:02But there's a huge champion out there.
- 20:05You should champion for them and they will champion for you.
- 20:07So I love that you're bringing this to the table and that it is
- 20:10staple stakes. Yes, yes, absolutely.
- 20:12It needs to be for all of us, even in healthcare, there's
- 20:17other things that we need to think about from inclusivity
- 20:19like I have to coach people that we should have our the level of
- 20:24the great reading level grade be really.
- 20:27Low for what? We're doing healthcare
- 20:29communications to our customers because people you never know
- 20:33for what reason, if they have low literacy, if English is
- 20:35their second language, you never know all the different reasons.
- 20:37The other thing is that in today's day and age, you can be
- 20:40the smartest person with the most education in the world, but
- 20:43your attention span has gotten so small.
- 20:46So need to contemplate putting a kind of lower grade reading
- 20:50level on all of our communications too, just because
- 20:53of the fact that people aren't, they're not reading books
- 20:56anymore. They want it in the bullets,
- 20:58They want it in the short form that they can consume.
- 21:01And again, it comes down to people have a really powerful
- 21:04message. You want the most possible kind
- 21:07of broadest possible audience to be able to consume your message.
- 21:11Well, and I, I know the thing that I heard a couple of years
- 21:14ago and it was really important. We've really pushed, pushed in
- 21:17the past year for this is more snackable content.
- 21:20And that's exactly the purpose behind it because you don't need
- 21:25to have all 12 verses out on the first go.
- 21:30You need to recognize digestibility for a broader mix.
- 21:35And this is something I want you to champion in your business so
- 21:39that you can inspire connection and really live your purpose for
- 21:43your people. Let's just be clear, your
- 21:45purpose is a North star for your people.
- 21:47It is not going to be digestible for everybody.
- 21:49And don't ever mistake that. That is golden good news.
- 21:53And I want to ask you, in your world right now, you're
- 21:57championing hard. You're advocating for both your
- 21:59own business growth and for others.
- 22:00What's working right now to amplify your message?
- 22:04You mentioned your network at the beginning.
- 22:06And for me, really leaning into my network has been the first
- 22:11step in amplifying my network, my message.
- 22:14And so for me, starting with my network, leaning into them has
- 22:19been important. Beyond that, I couple years ago
- 22:22just said I'm going to take risks.
- 22:25And that's been really, really, I think important for me in my
- 22:31success and for amplifying my message is taking risks.
- 22:35I mentioned at the beginning of this that you had one of your
- 22:39episodes inspired me to start leveraging.
- 22:41YouTube. For me, that was a big risk.
- 22:44I started doing video on LinkedIn.
- 22:46That was a big risk. All of these risks I've taken
- 22:49have paid off and they paid off in different ways.
- 22:52They paid off in clients, they paid off in broader impressions.
- 22:55But they've also, I feel like I grow every time I take a leap
- 23:01and every time I take a risk. And so I try to encourage others
- 23:05to do the same and to follow my lead that do something that
- 23:09makes you uncomfortable if it's going to help you grow as a
- 23:13person, but it's also, odds are going to amplify your message,
- 23:17broaden your reach and help you talk to more people and bring
- 23:21more into your own network. I love this so much.
- 23:26I actually have a similar goal on my commitment to myself.
- 23:31This is again with standing in the purpose that guys, if you
- 23:34thought I took risks before to get where I got to.
- 23:36Paul. Yeah.
- 23:36Did anything yet? The big challenge is to step
- 23:39even bigger, to step with more investment, more resources, more
- 23:43getting into rooms with people that are moving because we have
- 23:47to leave with light and we have to do this in an inclusive way.
- 23:51So I want people to come find you.
- 23:53I want people to come learn about your work you're doing.
- 23:55What do they do that? I love to connect with people on
- 23:59LinkedIn, Melissa Forest Shackleford, it's a great place
- 24:02to have a conversation. They can also reach me on my
- 24:04website, melissaforrestshackleford.com or
- 24:07my books website, harnessingpurpose.com.
- 24:10I'd love to connect with people. I love to have conversations and
- 24:13chatting with you like this has just been a wonderful treat,
- 24:16especially after I've watched so many of your episodes.
- 24:18That's been a treat. I love to meet people and do
- 24:21their podcasts and speak at their events.
- 24:23And so great ways to reach me are, like I said, my website or
- 24:27connecting with me on LinkedIn. So guys, take the leadership
- 24:31moment right now to go and connect with her.
- 24:33Start that conversation because your next client is led by you,
- 24:38your vision, your purpose, your North Star.
- 24:41It is about really always connecting first to make the
- 24:46first step. Melissa, thank you for being our
