Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am so excited
- 0:02to do this episode because I do feel like everyone
- 0:05really should live this way and I am trying just
- 0:11to do it and my kids in class are probably so
- 0:14tired of hearing this verse, but it is our mission
- 0:18and this is what we are called to do. And so
- 0:21in this episode, in week three of May, we are
- 0:25going through a series this month by... action
- 0:28in our faith. And so we don't want to just be
- 0:31hearers of the word. We want to be doers of the
- 0:33word. And so in the month of May, we have been
- 0:35walking through action. And so living missionally
- 0:40every day. This is a phrase that Jesus spoke
- 0:43that still flips our entire understanding of
- 0:46faith. Go into the world and make disciples.
- 0:49Matthew 28 19 and so I tell my class all the
- 0:53time we want to be fishers of men and not watchers
- 0:55of the aquarium and so it's great that you hang
- 0:57out with Christians and that's fine, but we're
- 1:00swimming in the same tank and so go get the people
- 1:02that are lost go be fishers of men and not watchers
- 1:07of the aquarium and so now most people hear that
- 1:10and think You have to be a pastor or in ministry,
- 1:13a preacher, people with microphones or Bible
- 1:15degrees, or people called into ministry. But
- 1:18Jesus didn't say that to a pastor. He didn't
- 1:21say that to a person that had a big platform.
- 1:25He didn't say that to a person that had a TV
- 1:27show. He said it to his disciples, ordinary people,
- 1:32fishermen, tax collectors, men with no training,
- 1:36women with no titles, people who were broken
- 1:40stories. people who complained, people who often
- 1:46felt unqualified, people with complicated personalities,
- 1:51which means if you belong to Jesus, you live
- 1:55on this mission. Not someday, not later, not
- 1:59when life slows down, not whenever you feel more
- 2:01spiritual, not whenever you know more Bible,
- 2:03or not whenever you have more confidence now.
- 2:06Because living missionally isn't something that
- 2:09you do It's who you are. And so what does missional
- 2:14living actually mean? Some people over complicate
- 2:17this missional living simply means living your
- 2:20everyday life with kingdom purpose. It's waking
- 2:23up in the morning and saying God use me today
- 2:26anywhere anytime with any one. We talked about
- 2:30that in the last episode as that's a very bold
- 2:33prayer use me as you need me. And so missional
- 2:36living is being available. Being interruptible.
- 2:41Listening to the Holy Spirit. Seeing people through
- 2:44God's eyes. Being bold whenever He nudges you.
- 2:48And being compassionate when someone needs you.
- 2:51Being intentional and not passive. Carrying Jesus
- 2:54into those spaces. You don't need a passport
- 2:57to live on mission. Your mission is everywhere
- 3:01you already are. And so I have a sign in my office
- 3:05because I'm the type of person that is busy all
- 3:06the time and I have a note up because I have
- 3:09Post -its notes I have things all over my walls
- 3:11to keep reminding me that don't be so busy that
- 3:14you don't let God interrupt your day and so I
- 3:18love a tight schedule and I It is what it is
- 3:22anymore and he just puts anybody on my schedule
- 3:24that he wants He makes people not show up what
- 3:27he wants because he knows the other person needs
- 3:28extra time. He knows that I'll be on a phone
- 3:30call Do what you want. I'm just along here for
- 3:32the ride. And so whenever your life is upside
- 3:38down and you feel at peace, you know that God
- 3:41is with you. Your life is someone's first introduction
- 3:45to Jesus. Let that sit. Your life is someone's
- 3:49first introduction to Jesus. People won't always
- 3:54talk and walk into church. But they do walk into
- 3:58workplaces and schools and gyms and social media,
- 4:02a living room, a friend circle, a grocery store,
- 4:05a conversation, your car, a volleyball game,
- 4:07a basketball game. You are the church they see.
- 4:12You are the sermon they watch. You are the Bible
- 4:16that they read without knowing it. And you are
- 4:20the reflection of God's love in their story.
- 4:23Missional Living says, I'm not Just going to
- 4:26church. I am the church. Wherever I go. Mission
- 4:32of living starts with seeing people differently.
- 4:34When Jesus walked the earth, he didn't rush past
- 4:37people. He saw them. He saw the woman at the
- 4:41well. The blind man crying out. That key is in
- 4:44the tree. The bleeding woman in the crowd. A
- 4:48man lowered through the roof. A hungry crowd.
- 4:52The lonely, the hurting, the overlooked. The
- 4:55sinners, the ashamed. Jesus saw the invisible.
- 5:00Jesus slowed for the broken. Jesus noticed the
- 5:03unnoticed. And He listened to the hurting. Jesus
- 5:06talked to those who everyone else avoided. Missional
- 5:11living begins with yes. Eyes that see beyond
- 5:16the surface. And the Holy Spirit is your guide.
- 5:20And He never leads you randomly. Missional living
- 5:25isn't about being perfect. Hear that. You don't
- 5:29have to have scripture memorized to be used by
- 5:31God. It's about being sensitive. And the Holy
- 5:35Spirit will nudge you. Text her. Pray for her.
- 5:40Pray for him. Stop and talk to that person. Pay
- 5:44for that meal. Encourage him today. Invite her
- 5:49to church. Ask how they're doing. Give that anyway.
- 5:56Speak life into them. In the Holy Spirit nudges
- 5:59you, please be obedient, because someone else's
- 6:03prayer could be answered by you being obedient.
- 6:07In the more that you obey the first nudge, the
- 6:10clearer the next nudge begun. And so if you feel
- 6:13like God is not speaking to you, go back and
- 6:16do the first nudge. The Holy Spirit leads people
- 6:20who listen. Who are still quiet enough to hear
- 6:25him and so many times I have text somebody and
- 6:28they're like, oh my gosh How did you know to
- 6:30text me or? There is Nick who is the floor guy
- 6:35at our office and the year so 2025 my word of
- 6:41the year was hope and then my verse of the year
- 6:44was Isaiah 40 31 and so I'm the type of person
- 6:48that loves confirmation and just to make sure
- 6:51that we're on the same page and so as I leave
- 6:53my house on January 1st to go into the office
- 6:56and so Isaiah 40 31 it talks about eagles and
- 6:59so what is in my back an eagle as I'm leaving
- 7:03and so I called my husband I said because we
- 7:04just had just went over the verse of the year
- 7:06and I said guess what I just saw and it was an
- 7:09eagle and then so I go to work and I come back
- 7:12home and there's another bald eagle so there's
- 7:14two bald eagles now sitting in my backyard and
- 7:17I was like okay I got you I got you and then
- 7:21so we go on and it was I go to work and there
- 7:26is a sticky note my Bible on my desk and on the
- 7:30sticky note it said Isaiah 40 31 and I was and
- 7:33it was like a different handwriting like I'd
- 7:34never seen it and so then I had talked to my
- 7:37nurse and she was like no and I was like that
- 7:39like why like how did you know and it wasn't
- 7:41even my Bible wasn't even open to Isaiah 40 31
- 7:44and So I talked to the cleaning people and they
- 7:48were like it wasn't me and I was like who else
- 7:50was in here and got to the guy that did it took
- 7:52me two weeks to find this guy. And I was like,
- 7:55oh my gosh, like how did you know to write Isaiah
- 7:5740, 31? He was like, I just felt like the Lord
- 7:59said to put it in a really good verse. And I'm
- 8:00like, that is my verse of the year. Like you
- 8:03being obedient just gave me confirmation. So
- 8:05thank you, thank you so much. And it was just
- 8:09writing down a verse for somebody is confirmation
- 8:12that God is listening to someone's prayer. So
- 8:14please do not think it's silly. If God has told
- 8:17you to do something, just please be obedient.
- 8:19It's so important. And missional living is often
- 8:24quiet and small. Just his little simple note
- 8:26as he's sticking out really was such a beautiful
- 8:30act of kindness. And most kingdom impact doesn't
- 8:33look dramatic. It looks like a conversation,
- 8:36an act of kindness, a moment of vulnerability,
- 8:39a prayer whispered in the hallway, a word of
- 8:41encouragement, helping someone carry the burden
- 8:44and being consistent in someone's life, loving
- 8:47the difficult people, forgiving quickly. Choosing
- 8:50compassion over reaction and choosing patience
- 8:53over irritation God builds his kingdom through
- 8:57small seeds planted in willing hearts every missional
- 9:01moment is a seed that heaven grows and So where
- 9:05are three spheres of your mission field? One
- 9:10where you live don't make it hard your home your
- 9:13neighborhood your community mission begins at
- 9:15home Your family is your first ministry We said
- 9:19this they said and when I first started seminary
- 9:21and they were like people go through seminary
- 9:24And they're so focused on the God that their
- 9:25family falls apart Don't be that person and so
- 9:29your mission your family is your first minute
- 9:31is your first ministry But it doesn't stop there.
- 9:34Your neighborhood is your fertile ground for
- 9:37Kingdom to to love Where you work your job your
- 9:42school your teams your clients your workplace
- 9:46is not just a coincidence It's an assignment.
- 9:49You don't need to preach. You need to reflect
- 9:52Jesus. Your attitude, your integrity, your kindness,
- 9:57your grace speaks louder than sermons. 3. Where
- 10:03you go regularly. The stores, the gyms, the sidelines,
- 10:09the routines, the small groups, the people that
- 10:12you see over and over. That is your mission field.
- 10:15God has put you there strategically and not accidentally.
- 10:22The enemy's goal is to make you live small and
- 10:26self -focused. If the enemy can't take your salvation,
- 10:29he'll try to steal your mission. He whispers,
- 10:33you're too busy. You're not spiritual enough.
- 10:37They think that you're weird. He'll say it wrong.
- 10:41You're not a good reader. You can't read that
- 10:42book out loud. You don't know enough Bible. No
- 10:46one will listen. It won't matter. But listen,
- 10:51that is fear talking, not God. God uses ordinary
- 10:55obedience to create extraordinary impact. And
- 10:59one sentence can soften a heart. One prayer can
- 11:03break a chain. One invitation can save a soul.
- 11:07And one act of kindness can shift a life. One
- 11:11conversation can rewrite a future. Missional
- 11:14living makes you a threat because you start seeing
- 11:18every day as a divine purpose. Missional living
- 11:22is not about you. It's about God's love through
- 11:25you. People don't need perfection. They need
- 11:28presence. People don't need theology degrees.
- 11:32They need compassion. People don't need impressive
- 11:35Christians. They need consistent ones. People
- 11:37don't need loud faith. They need real faith.
- 11:41People don't need fireworks. They need fruit.
- 11:46Missional living means that you're becoming and
- 11:48living a declaration. God sees you. God loves
- 11:53you. And God hasn't forgotten about you. And
- 11:57so I want to remind you that at FosteringFaithMedia
- 11:59.com, we have workbooks that we have assigned
- 12:03for every month and every week of this podcast
- 12:05because we are fostering our faith together.
- 12:07And so this week, Where is God calling me to
- 12:10live out on mission this week? Ask yourself.
- 12:14Who needs encouragement? Who needs prayer? Who
- 12:17feels alone? Who is struggling silently? And
- 12:20who keeps coming up to your mind? Where has God
- 12:23placed you over and over again? What relationships
- 12:27need intentionality? What environment needs your
- 12:31light? Sit with the Holy Spirit and let Him guide
- 12:36you. Let Him see. What is on your heart? And
- 12:41so what's one intentional, specific, missional
- 12:43act that you will actually live out this week?
- 12:48Invite someone to church. Pray with somebody.
- 12:51Text someone scripture. Pay for a stranger quietly.
- 12:56Help a co -worker. Encourage a student. Write
- 13:00a note to someone that's hurting. Ask deeper
- 13:03questions, not surface level. Share your testimony
- 13:07with someone else that's safe. Start a spiritual
- 13:11conversation gently. Mission isn't pressure.
- 13:16It's partnership with the Holy Spirit. And so
- 13:19we hope that this message encouraged you. And
- 13:22we ask that you share it with a friend. Leave
- 13:23a comment. Share it to your small group. Let's
- 13:26foster our faith together. Let's grow in community
- 13:29because we are better together. And so I would
- 13:32love to pray for you this week. Dear Holy...
- 13:36Spirit, dear, thank you God for today. Thank
- 13:39you for yesterday. Open our eyes to see the people
- 13:42the way that you do. Thank you that you make
- 13:44us sensitive to your voice. Thank you that we
- 13:46have boldness to act on your nudges. Thank you
- 13:49that our life reflects Jesus in our everyday
- 13:52environments. Thank you that you use us today.
- 13:54Thank you that you can use us anywhere. Thank
- 13:56you that you can use us at any time. Thank you
- 13:57that we're living open handed. Thank you that
- 13:59we are the ones that can go out and be fishers
- 14:02of men. Thank you for all that you do. In Jesus
- 14:05name, I pray. Amen and amen. Stay tuned for our
- 14:09last episode in our faith and action next week
- 14:12as we are going into our episode four and it's
- 14:15going to be called what it means to be the hands
- 14:18and feet of Christ. See you next week, guys.
- 14:20We love you. Bye.
