- 0:00Speaker 1: Now the 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief. It's the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Husker Buzz Edition. We bring in Sean Callahan, 1110 KFAB
- 0:09Speaker 1: Husker Insider here. Sean, we heard from Coach Rule yesterday,
- 0:13Speaker 1: as usual, but no word on Jamal Rule, no word
- 0:18Speaker 1: on Ja'Cory Barney. Why not?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the Big Ten injury report now. So every Wednesday,
- 0:24Speaker 2: you're going to get this injury report out daily, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 0:28Speaker 2: and Saturday, where coaches by league mandate have to put
- 0:31Speaker 2: these out. So no coaches on Mondays are going to
- 0:35Speaker 2: start the week off anymore, really, given much of an
- 0:37Speaker 2: injury update, because they're forced to do it by the
- 0:39Speaker 2: league on Wednesdays. We don't speak to Matt Rule after Monday, again,
- 0:45Speaker 2: until Saturday. Your one chance to ask him is Monday.
- 0:48Speaker 2: You won't get anything Monday, and we'll have to kind
- 0:51Speaker 2: of wait for these injury reports. You know how injury
- 0:53Speaker 2: reports can be. You can list guys probable, doubtful, out.
- 0:56Speaker 2: There's a lot of ways to list a player on there.
- 0:59Speaker 2: So we'll see how it plays out.
- 1:01Speaker 1: He did seem to suggest that it would be very
- 1:05Speaker 1: difficult to keep Ja'Cory Barney out of this game. He
- 1:09Speaker 1: made some comments along those lines. Did you pick up
- 1:12Speaker 1: on that as well?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, he said Ja'Cory's made of rubber, quote, and he's
- 1:17Speaker 2: somebody that's taken a lot of hits and had bumps
- 1:21Speaker 2: and bruises last year and this year both, the way
- 1:23Speaker 2: he plays. A lot of it is getting back to
- 1:26Speaker 2: Lincoln and getting in the treatment. They've got the world-class
- 1:30Speaker 2: center there for these athletes with all the different resources,
- 1:33Speaker 2: so they can get a lot done in a week.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Jamal Rule is an ankle, and I think he had
- 1:39Speaker 2: some ankle problems before in high school. So they're going
- 1:41Speaker 2: to be real careful with that because they know they
- 1:45Speaker 2: need him. You probably can still win this game this
- 1:48Speaker 2: week even without Jamal Rule, but you'd love to have
- 1:50Speaker 2: him at 100% for Indiana. We'll see where this goes
- 1:55Speaker 2: with Jamal Rule. That's probably the one I'm more interested in.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You should never look past a conference opponent. We have
- 2:01Speaker 1: certainly learned that over the years with Indiana coming to
- 2:04Speaker 1: town a week from Saturday. and the Terrapins looking pretty
- 2:09Speaker 1: pathetic last week against UCLA. What do you sense is
- 2:13Speaker 1: where Coach Rule is in trying to drill into his guys? Like, look,
- 2:19Speaker 1: don't sleep on Maryland here.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of it is, again, learning how to
- 2:24Speaker 2: handle success. You're right, we've seen this before, Scott, where
- 2:29Speaker 2: Nebraska goes into a game where They're a favorite, not
- 2:33Speaker 2: maybe this many points, but a pretty sizable favorite, maybe
- 2:36Speaker 2: 8 to 10 points. And they don't play well. I mean,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I go back to Matt Rule's second year. I mean,
- 2:42Speaker 2: UCLA came in and beat them in Lincoln, and they
- 2:46Speaker 2: were not a good team that year. Illinois, when Scott
- 2:50Speaker 2: Frost was here, was a huge dog with Lovie Smith.
- 2:53Speaker 2: They beat Nebraska. Sometimes a lot of it is not
- 2:56Speaker 2: reading all the headlines and the clippings and just doing
- 3:00Speaker 2: what you do. I think that's the theme this week.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Don't read what's out there. Just do what we do
- 3:06Speaker 2: here at Nebraska and prepare. Maryland has a lot of athletes.
- 3:11Speaker 2: That's the thing. This roster... It's not as bad as
- 3:14Speaker 2: last week's score indicated, and you never know when that
- 3:17Speaker 2: group will show up and play their best football. It
- 3:21Speaker 2: could be this weekend, so you've got to be ready
- 3:22Speaker 2: for that because Maryland did play Virginia Tech fairly close.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Virginia Tech's a good team, and that was just the
- 3:28Speaker 2: week before the game against UCLA.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yeah, what happened with them against UCLA?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Pick sixes. Multiple pick sixes by Malik Washington and just
- 3:38Speaker 2: some turnovers and uncharacteristic mistakes. They can't run the ball
- 3:42Speaker 2: very well, at least right now. Their top running back's
- 3:44Speaker 2: been out, and they probably have one of the worst
- 3:48Speaker 2: running games as it is in the Big Ten, where
- 3:51Speaker 2: they don't just have a capable back to ground and
- 3:55Speaker 2: pound you with. They're just a team that's going to
- 3:58Speaker 2: throw a lot. They have great receivers. They have a
- 4:02Speaker 2: defense with some athletic guys on the edge. But again,
- 4:07Speaker 2: running the football has not been their forte, and it's
- 4:09Speaker 2: hard to be good in the Big Ten when you
- 4:10Speaker 2: can't run the football.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Anything else we got out of Coach Rule yesterday?
- 4:14Speaker 2: No, Indiana's Big Noon kickoff next weekend. So we get
- 4:18Speaker 2: through this game, and then 11 a.m., Fox's Big Noon
- 4:21Speaker 2: will be broadcasting the game. Now, no word yet on
- 4:23Speaker 2: if the show will be here. That's still not finalized,
- 4:27Speaker 2: but the game will be on Big Noon. And generally
- 4:29Speaker 2: that means the show's coming here too, but they have
- 4:31Speaker 2: not announced that part yet.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and Nebraska basketball started preseason practice this week. We're
- 4:38Speaker 1: getting into October, Sean. This is starting to get serious.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Playoff baseball today, too. You have games on NBC today.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's like an old-school 1980s Tuesday.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah. World Series has been played for over 120 years
- 4:53Speaker 1: or something like that. This is only the ninth day
- 4:56Speaker 1: that both Chicago baseball teams have played a postseason game
- 5:01Speaker 1: on the same day. There's a stat to take with
- 5:03Speaker 1: you the rest of the day.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Take that to the water cooler.
- 5:07Speaker 1: That's right. All right. Sean, we'll talk again tomorrow. Thank
- 5:10Speaker 1: you very much for the time. Always a pleasure.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Thanks, Scott.
