- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The Great North Logistical Headache.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: An editorial by me, Felicity Thau.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Here in the North East of England, we are emerging from Great North Run season.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Hosting the biggest half marathon in the world on our doorstep naturally creates
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: a few more new patient appointments and a little less space on the path
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: of your regular running route.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: I have done the Great North Run once, two years ago.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: This was also my final time doing the Great North Run,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: mostly because of the associated Great North logistical headache.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Do not let me put you off.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: It is a fantastic event with a great atmosphere and tens of thousands of runners
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: in turn raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: However, in my experience, the Great North Run is one very demanding thing.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: The Great North Portaloque is quite another.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Same to the Great North return bus journey, or if,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: unlike me,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: you haven't seriously pissed off your IT band and fancy it,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: the Great North walk to South Shields Metro Station,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: followed by the Great North standing room only trip back to Newcastle in the shadow
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: of a fellow runner's Great North armpit.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Now, I understand that an A to B half marathon route is naturally going
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: to place you 13.1 miles away from where you started,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: but unfortunately what I didn't reckon with We're standing for an hour in
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: the pouring rain in the 2024 starting pen,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: then an arduous 21 kilometres,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: then boarding what turned out to be Harry Potter's night bus,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: realised namely when we were practically scaling the walls of tunnels at speed,
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: and then hammered home
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: when I threw up some electrolytes I would rather have kept myself
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: into my hastily emptied goodie bag.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Despite the best efforts of Ernie Prang and Stan Shunpike,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: This journey took the same 2 hour 22 minute duration that it took me to go in
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: the opposite direction on foot.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: I mention the half marathon only briefly on purpose because it was eclipsed by
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: the logistics of the day.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: You deserve a medal for braving the whole day, start to finish.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: You deserve a new technical t-shirt for making it back home, plus or minus some bodily fluids.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: In this month's MSK Mag,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: our articles talk about the smallness of a singular appointment and
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: the patient's label, such as runner or tight scar.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: The pelvic floor that has placed you back at the end of
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: the aforementioned Great North Port de Luque, but that no one taught you about.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: How we can run small business hustles alongside our full-time jobs and family lives.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And the breadth and depth of how to seek or provide a good second opinion when
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: that singular appointment isn't going to plan.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: It always struck me as bizarre that sports medicine
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: and musculoskeletal specialties deal with pain and dysfunction from head to toe in
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: the human body,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: opens Gronje Donnelly,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: yet offer little health literacy or inclusion of the pelvic floor.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: In her piece,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Healthcare's Best Kept Secret,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: The Pelvic Floor,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Gronje addresses the much neglected anatomy that feels forgotten in the big event.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Bell and Claire Robertson team up to write first-rate,
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: second opinions and share how to both ask for and provide a good one.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Can we follow the thread far enough back to tell why a race isn't going to plan?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: In Scar Skepticism,
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Hannah Poulton takes on the evidence to address whether there is a merit
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: in soft tissue therapy for the treatment of scars.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: In an area where clinicians tend to be firmly based on one side of the argument or
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: the other,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Hannah will stretch your brain wider than the felling bypass to see
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: the bigger picture.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: In an article that fits my metaphor better than most,
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Aidan O'Flaherty shares what he has learned from treating runners
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: and teaching other clinicians in his running injuries course.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: It's not just about the ITB or the Achilles,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: but getting into the runner psyche of the human being wedged into the trainers.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Read more in Running Injury Rehab.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: The diagnosis is only part of the story.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: And finally,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: our own Jack March is well known for his main events,
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Ops Lead at Physio Matters, an organiser of Therapy Live and our masterclasses.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: But what about the working parts in the background that contribute
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: to his additional business, rheumatology.physio?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Incorporating some relationship as well as business advice,
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: check it out in Every Day I'm Hustlin'.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And so, as medals are hung up and training cycles are wound down,
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: it's clear that the finish line was never the full story.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: It was about the training, the effort and the getting home again.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: It's the same in the clinic room and this month's authors are all asking
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: the same question in different postcodes.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: What's going on behind the small picture,
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: the singular appointment, the singular label and the singular diagnosis?
