- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Seattle's always a tough place to play, whether they're not
- 0:22Speaker 2: going to the playoffs.
- 0:23Speaker 4: That was there in 08. They weren't even going to
- 0:24Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It was still insane. It's an even Brady loss there.
- 0:27Speaker 2: How loud is it?
- 0:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:28Speaker 6: You mad, bro?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Like, how are we going to improve you in the pick?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Walking down the bottom. I'm just embracing my suckitude. The
- 0:34Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers against the Rams, but it's being played
- 0:38Speaker 2: in Australia.
- 0:40Speaker 4: So when the quarterback throws the ball, does it spin
- 0:42Speaker 4: the other way?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Oh, I know. That's why. That's not his real name. No,
- 0:45Speaker 2: I know.
- 0:45Speaker 4: But he goes by AJ.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 6: I think there's like shortening your first name nicknames like Alex.
- 0:51Speaker 6: My name's Alexandra. But then there's like marketing nicknames like RG3.
- 0:55Speaker 2: To me, Pop is a true nickname. Yeah. Because you
- 0:58Speaker 2: would call, hey, hey, Pop.
- 1:00Speaker 4: But you would never say, hey, TV12. I'm going to
- 1:03Speaker 4: take the Jets.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It just doesn't. Yeah, I'm going to go with the Jets, believe.
- 1:10Speaker 4: It or not. After all of that crap, you just
- 1:12Speaker 4: picked the same thing?
- 1:13Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:13Speaker 4: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Presented by Toyota.com. Patriots Unfiltered. All right, welcome in, everybody,
- 1:21Speaker 2: to Patriots Unfiltered. It's a big show because Fred and
- 1:24Speaker 2: Evan are out in Seattle. That must mean week one
- 1:26Speaker 2: starts tomorrow. And we've got a new contract for Christian Gonzalez.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Big day here. Got Jack Webb in to fill in,
- 1:32Speaker 2: help manage things.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Next man up.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Next man up.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Next man up. Evan, of course, you guys probably.
- 1:37Speaker 6: They didn't trust the three of us.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, just watched Catch-22, I'm sure, with Alex Barth and
- 1:40Speaker 2: Evan Lazar. But no Fred today. They're out there in Seattle.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And we're here to break everything down for you guys.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So this is a... Pretty exciting, Paul. We got the
- 1:47Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez. I'm sure you were up last night.
- 1:49Speaker 4: You were prescient.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Last week, you said, you know, your legal seafood fresh take.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I was 0 for 2 on my fresh takes.
- 1:55Speaker 4: But who knew we just had to get Fred and
- 1:57Speaker 4: Evan out of town to get this deal done?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I'm just really relieved in all seriousness that we don't
- 2:03Speaker 4: have to talk about this anymore. Like, will they do it?
- 2:06Speaker 4: You know what?
- 2:08Speaker 2: It's over.
- 2:08Speaker 4: It's probably a really good deal for both sides. We'll
- 2:13Speaker 4: get into some of the nuts and bolts if you
- 2:14Speaker 4: guys want later. But I do think both sides probably
- 2:18Speaker 4: gave a little and got some. And the bottom line
- 2:22Speaker 4: here is you have a happy Christian Gonzalez heading into
- 2:25Speaker 4: the opener tomorrow night. I don't know how you can
- 2:28Speaker 4: look at that any other way. been immensely positive. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 4: definitely nice, Alex, not to have to hear about it.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Even you, Mike, should look at that positively. You hardly
- 2:35Speaker 4: ever look at anything on the bright side.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And as I was going to say, not, and I
- 2:38Speaker 2: said this a lot, like going into the first game
- 2:40Speaker 2: of the season, there's going to be pregame shows for
- 2:41Speaker 2: a while.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Nice that now that isn't a talking point while the
- 2:44Speaker 2: Seahawks got theirs done and Christian Gonzalez is still waiting.
- 2:47Speaker 7: I wish we just did it one day earlier because
- 2:49Speaker 7: then we could have dropped that fun hype video and
- 2:51Speaker 7: it would have been really well received instead of just like,
- 2:54Speaker 7: pay Gonzo, pay Gonzo, pay Gonzo.
- 2:56Speaker 6: But it's okay.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 8: Yeah, Jack, what did you think about the deal? I
- 3:00Speaker 8: like the deal, and it's nice to just have it done.
- 3:02Speaker 8: I mean, it felt like there was a dark cloud
- 3:04Speaker 8: over Patriots fans' heads. You're trying to get excited for
- 3:06Speaker 8: a Super Bowl rematch on opening night of the NFL season.
- 3:10Speaker 4: All you can think about is Christian Gonzalez. Is he
- 3:11Speaker 4: going to get paid? Is he unhappy? Is he going
- 3:13Speaker 4: to play? That's all the worries, right?
- 3:14Speaker 8: So for that to be over and have Patriots fans
- 3:17Speaker 8: and the Patriots themselves maybe even just focus on the
- 3:20Speaker 8: task at hand.
- 3:21Speaker 4: It feels good.
- 3:22Speaker 8: It feels like a weight moved off the shoulders of
- 3:25Speaker 8: people covering the team, fans of the team, everybody.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah, plenty to get to.
- 3:28Speaker 2: We were here all weekend. They were practicing over the
- 3:31Speaker 2: course of Labor Day as they got ready for this one.
- 3:32Speaker 2: They flew out yesterday to Seattle. You know, definitely some
- 3:36Speaker 2: notable things to talk about with this game and certainly
- 3:39Speaker 2: running back is a position I want to get into
- 3:41Speaker 2: as well with Travion Henderson up in the air. But,
- 3:43Speaker 2: you know, hey, Patriots fans, up your game by going
- 3:45Speaker 2: to toyota.com to see the best selection of hybrid, all-wheel drive,
- 3:49Speaker 2: and four-wheel drive vehicles of any brand. Toyota is the
- 3:51Speaker 2: official vehicle of the New England Patriots. Toyota, let's go
- 3:54Speaker 2: places and let's go home. Talk a little bit about
- 3:57Speaker 2: this game, guys, because it's exciting finally here. I mean,
- 4:00Speaker 2: you've been talking so much about it. Felt like Mike
- 4:02Speaker 2: Frabel this weekend.
- 4:03Speaker 4: We heard from him.
- 4:03Speaker 2: It's like, you know, you can only spend so much
- 4:04Speaker 2: time breaking this game down. And I think, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: my my biggest question is just how do you not
- 4:10Speaker 2: get wrapped up in what happened in the Super Bowl
- 4:12Speaker 2: and not make too big of a deal that I
- 4:14Speaker 2: think about a guy like, you know, Will Campbell, who's
- 4:17Speaker 2: been in the crosshairs from that game. And this is
- 4:19Speaker 2: his first action. Now he's going to step right back
- 4:21Speaker 2: on the field against this same team. How do you manage, yes,
- 4:24Speaker 2: it's important to play week one and we want to
- 4:26Speaker 2: win the game, but at the same time, we can't
- 4:28Speaker 2: go in there thinking that we're going to right the
- 4:30Speaker 2: wrongs of the Super Bowl or prove that we were
- 4:33Speaker 2: a better team than we showed in that game.
- 4:35Speaker 4: You just have to go out as the 2026 Patriots.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And get the season started, see what your issues are
- 4:40Speaker 2: going to be and what you're good at and what
- 4:42Speaker 2: you have to fix.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think, too, you learn a lot of lessons.
- 4:45Speaker 8: What makes me so– I don't want to get too
- 4:48Speaker 8: far ahead of myself here in the show, but with
- 4:50Speaker 8: Evan not being here, someone had to watch the tape,
- 4:52Speaker 8: so I went and I watched the tape yesterday.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Did you grind it or what? Oh, I grinded it.
- 4:55Speaker 4: And with Evan not being here, everybody else gets to talk.
- 5:00Speaker 8: So in his honor, grinded the tape, and I actually
- 5:04Speaker 8: came away feeling pretty good about the Patriots. And I
- 5:08Speaker 8: know that sounds backwards because of how poorly they played.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Watch out, watch out.
- 5:12Speaker 8: But I just, in no world do I think that
- 5:16Speaker 8: offense plays that poorly again. And then I thought about
- 5:20Speaker 8: Will Campbell. I thought about Drake May. Will Campbell, who,
- 5:23Speaker 8: you know, just who they are as people. You know,
- 5:24Speaker 8: what we know about them. Will Campbell wearing number seven
- 5:27Speaker 8: in LSU. If you know anything about number seven in LSU,
- 5:30Speaker 8: you know, that tells you something, right? Drake May being
- 5:32Speaker 8: the youngest of four. You know, just the competitors that
- 5:35Speaker 8: they are. You knew, and you know, sorry, This was
- 5:38Speaker 8: in the back of their mind all preseason long, all
- 5:40Speaker 8: offseason long. I mean, you know, in general over the past, what,
- 5:43Speaker 8: six months of not playing football.
- 5:45Speaker 4: That's what I mean.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Like, you know, like, should it be? You know what
- 5:47Speaker 2: I mean? Like, do you as a coach say, I
- 5:49Speaker 2: know it's good motivation going to this game, but at
- 5:52Speaker 2: the same time, you don't want to– I imagine some
- 5:54Speaker 2: of these guys' new faces, Mike Vrabel's trying to talk
- 5:57Speaker 2: about that Super Bowl.
- 5:58Speaker 4: I didn't play in that game. I think it's funny, too. Jack,
- 6:01Speaker 4: there's a big thing that Fred has always had with us.
- 6:04Speaker 4: You're never allowed to call something a rematch. If you
- 6:07Speaker 4: had a big game with the team one year and
- 6:08Speaker 4: you play in the next year, it's not a rematch,
- 6:10Speaker 4: he always says, because he's right. Most of the players
- 6:14Speaker 4: are different. Things change. The personnel is never exactly the same,
- 6:18Speaker 4: but for whatever reason, he suspended his own rule in
- 6:22Speaker 4: He says that you can, in fact, call this a
- 6:25Speaker 4: rematch because it's the next game.
- 6:28Speaker 2: He decreed it. Yeah.
- 6:30Speaker 4: He declared, much like when Belichick said the game declared,
- 6:34Speaker 4: Fred declared that we're allowed to call this a Super
- 6:36Speaker 4: Bowl rematch, which I think is kind of odd because
- 6:38Speaker 4: of so many new faces and so many guys that
- 6:41Speaker 4: I thought were important players.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Coordinators.
- 6:44Speaker 4: On both teams that aren't there.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 4: And I think that's going to be the key to
- 6:49Speaker 4: me is how does... not having Kenneth Walker change the
- 6:53Speaker 4: way Seattle runs the ball, if at all. How do
- 6:56Speaker 4: the Patriots approach that, you know, up front? You know,
- 7:00Speaker 4: you have some different pieces in place there. Like, that
- 7:03Speaker 4: was probably the key to the game offensively for Seattle, right,
- 7:06Speaker 4: was how well Walker ran the football.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Totally.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Does that happen again? Like, probably not.
- 7:11Speaker 6: That's why the closer we get to the game, the
- 7:13Speaker 6: better I feel for the Patriots.
- 7:15Speaker 2: The only thing on my mind with that, though, Paul,
- 7:17Speaker 2: is you remember the old days with, like, when Denver
- 7:20Speaker 2: would run, you know, they're the originators of the wide
- 7:22Speaker 2: zone and they just kept plugging in like Mike Anderson,
- 7:24Speaker 2: like they would plug in a back and somehow they
- 7:27Speaker 2: would always be productive. They wouldn't be productive elsewhere, but I,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, that's one like pause that I have of today.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Does that kind of become a Denver thing where it's
- 7:34Speaker 2: a wide zone scheme and they get guys that can
- 7:35Speaker 2: do it and they just find the scene.
- 7:37Speaker 4: So I would argue that Terrell Davis was a Superbowl.
- 7:40Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 4: None of those other guys ever won squat. Mike Anderson,
- 7:44Speaker 4: Alandis Gary, good players. They never won anything with those guys.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Because there was a drop-off. You know what I mean?
- 7:50Speaker 4: The scheme was the scheme, and it was really good.
- 7:54Speaker 4: But I did think there was a difference, and I
- 7:56Speaker 4: think the Patriots fans probably hope that you know, Jadarian
- 8:00Speaker 4: Price is a drop-off from what you saw from Kenneth Walker.
- 8:03Speaker 8: I think, too, what makes you, I guess, could give
- 8:06Speaker 8: you hope that there's a drop-off is Kenneth Walker was
- 8:08Speaker 8: in that system.
- 8:09Speaker 4: He's been doing that for a long time. He's comfortable.
- 8:11Speaker 4: He knows what to do.
- 8:12Speaker 8: You know, when you have an aim point as a
- 8:14Speaker 8: running back, okay, when that's blocked off, he knows the
- 8:17Speaker 8: adjustment to make.
- 8:17Speaker 4: He knows where he could go, you know, and he's
- 8:19Speaker 4: very good at bouncing that outside. A guy like Price where.
- 8:22Speaker 8: okay, you know, maybe I don't know if he ran
- 8:24Speaker 8: it all in the preseason, but this is going to
- 8:26Speaker 8: be the first live bullets flying against starting caliber defense, right?
- 8:30Speaker 8: If his aim points all clogged up, is he going
- 8:32Speaker 8: to be as comfortable as Kenneth Walker seemed to be
- 8:34Speaker 8: a master at it in the Super Bowl, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 8: with one of the games of his life, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 8: in that ability to bounce it outside to make an
- 8:41Speaker 8: adjustment on the fly. So it will be interesting to
- 8:43Speaker 8: see if price can bring that to the Seattle offense.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Along those lines. I think something that concerns me is
- 8:48Speaker 2: just neither team has really played In the preseason, you
- 8:51Speaker 2: expect tackling and things to be sloppy. Is this, and
- 8:56Speaker 2: I don't want to get into what my key is
- 8:57Speaker 2: going to be when we talk about it tomorrow night,
- 8:59Speaker 2: and Jack, you're sitting in the host chair, but I
- 9:02Speaker 2: feel like a baseline of just playing some clean football,
- 9:05Speaker 2: and I'm really worried about the tackling, and I think
- 9:08Speaker 2: it's for both teams, but I also look at a
- 9:10Speaker 2: rookie running back, and I think there might be some
- 9:12Speaker 2: opportunities to get the ball out for the kid like this.
- 9:15Speaker 2: How well is he? I mean, we know this. This
- 9:17Speaker 2: team preaches punching that ball out. We see him practicing
- 9:19Speaker 2: it all the time. So I just think that's a
- 9:21Speaker 2: big key. Who's going to be the sloppier team and
- 9:24Speaker 2: who maybe makes one less mistake? And I always kind
- 9:28Speaker 2: of go into first games with that kind of attitude.
- 9:29Speaker 7: And that's something that we obviously, the Patriots really struggled
- 9:32Speaker 7: with at the beginning of the year and then really
- 9:33Speaker 7: went on to clean it up. How front of mind
- 9:35Speaker 7: is that now this year? It's a new season. Maybe
- 9:38Speaker 7: they forgot about like. What game was it where there
- 9:40Speaker 7: was like four turnovers?
- 9:42Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 4: There were a lot of missed tackles too early on.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Steelers game.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I just wonder if it's a wash or if one
- 9:46Speaker 2: team does get an advantage as far as the sloppiness.
- 9:49Speaker 2: But certainly a lot of pressure on the Patriots with
- 9:51Speaker 2: the noise and stuff.
- 9:51Speaker 4: You can never predict that. I mean, generally, that's what
- 9:55Speaker 4: you know, determines the outcomes of these games, right? Is
- 9:58Speaker 4: the turnovers and how they, they unfold. But I'm just
- 10:02Speaker 4: going to operate under the, Fred and I, this is
- 10:05Speaker 4: another crutch that I lean on with Fred. When I
- 10:08Speaker 4: sort of look at a game and I, I look,
- 10:10Speaker 4: you know, I try to forecast what might happen. I'm
- 10:12Speaker 4: going to assume both teams play well. So it's not,
- 10:15Speaker 4: you know, like, well, one team turned the ball over
- 10:17Speaker 4: three times, you know, like the Florida state SMU game
- 10:19Speaker 4: last night.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You know, SMU completely.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Dominates the game, but you turn it over four times
- 10:24Speaker 4: and you allow another team that really wasn't overly competitive
- 10:27Speaker 4: with you to stay in the game to the last second.
- 10:29Speaker 4: SMU ends up escaping because they turned the ball over
- 10:33Speaker 4: four times. If that doesn't happen, if neither side is overly,
- 10:36Speaker 4: you know, let's say they turn it over once apiece
- 10:39Speaker 4: or something like that, what do you go back on?
- 10:41Speaker 4: I go back to where we started the show with Gonzalez. And,
- 10:45Speaker 4: you know, fresh off the contract extension game, Here we go.
- 10:48Speaker 4: He's got one of the best receivers in football that
- 10:51Speaker 4: he's going to see, you know, a good deal of,
- 10:53Speaker 4: I would imagine. How does that matchup, you know, get determined?
- 10:57Speaker 4: How does that outcome? And how much better are the
- 11:01Speaker 4: pieces around JSN this time, which I hate. Jackson Smith
- 11:04Speaker 4: and Jagba, I will not do that again.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 11:08Speaker 4: How much better are the pieces around him with, like,
- 11:11Speaker 4: Rashid Shaheed being there through a full offseason?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Reports out of Seattle kind of indicating that he looks
- 11:17Speaker 4: much more comfortable, much more viable threat with Cooper Cup as,
- 11:21Speaker 4: you know, sort of just a steady, reliable third receiver.
- 11:25Speaker 4: You know, how many more options does Sam Darnold have
- 11:28Speaker 4: to go to beyond Jackson, Smith, and Jigba maybe this
- 11:31Speaker 4: time around than he did, you know, back in February?
- 11:34Speaker 4: Those are the key things.
- 11:34Speaker 7: That being said, I'd say that secondary for New England's
- 11:37Speaker 7: been upgraded a lot too. Kevin Byard and, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 7: they're returning a strong cornerback set. That's not going to
- 11:43Speaker 7: be my favorite matchup. just the secondary versus their receivers.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, how, how they kind of work, Kevin Byard,
- 11:51Speaker 2: Craig Woodson together. We don't really see Woodson at the end.
- 11:53Speaker 2: He's been, he was a little injured. It seems like
- 11:55Speaker 2: he's fine to go. Um, but I guess the, you know, guys, the, the,
- 11:58Speaker 2: the big thing for me, I just want to start
- 12:00Speaker 2: off with was just, you know, Travian Henderson. And we,
- 12:02Speaker 2: you know, we're in the locker room all weekend long.
- 12:04Speaker 2: He saw him around a little bit. He did not practice.
- 12:05Speaker 2: We did not see him out there. Uh, as of
- 12:07Speaker 2: right now, we're still uncertain if he has any status.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Mike Vrabel yesterday said, we still have a couple of days.
- 12:12Speaker 2: He did not practice at all. Uh, and I'm kind
- 12:15Speaker 2: of feeling like great about reminder Stevenson, but it's hard
- 12:19Speaker 2: when you get to the first game of the season
- 12:21Speaker 2: and you look back and you think about all the
- 12:22Speaker 2: conversations we had about, you know, trying to find another
- 12:24Speaker 2: running back and all that. And, you know, it's just,
- 12:27Speaker 2: it's one little slip for Travian Henderson on the practice field.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And now, you know, you're, you're not really sure who's
- 12:32Speaker 2: going to carry the ball other than reminder Stevenson. And
- 12:34Speaker 2: I think, you know, for this team to peak at
- 12:36Speaker 2: the end and to really be great in the playoffs,
- 12:38Speaker 2: you're going to want a fresh, healthy reminder Stevenson. And,
- 12:41Speaker 2: you know, how much are you going to have to
- 12:42Speaker 2: lean on him early and who steps up if Henderson
- 12:46Speaker 2: can't go and what can they possibly offer? Who do
- 12:48Speaker 2: they trust to give the ball to at this point?
- 12:50Speaker 4: So I think this is probably a good matchup for
- 12:52Speaker 4: the Patriots to not have another option. And I think it,
- 12:58Speaker 4: you know, I'm not expecting the Patriots to have a
- 13:00Speaker 4: tremendous amount of success regardless of who's running the ball
- 13:02Speaker 4: against that defense. I think Seattle's, if not the best,
- 13:07Speaker 4: they're one of the best run defenses in football. So,
- 13:11Speaker 4: How do you stay out of those situations that we
- 13:13Speaker 4: talked about last week? Mike, you made a big deal
- 13:15Speaker 4: out of what killed them in the Super Bowl was
- 13:17Speaker 4: just so many sort of like, meh, first down plays
- 13:21Speaker 4: that had them in second and eight, second and nine
- 13:23Speaker 4: all day. Well, throw the ball. Throw the ball and
- 13:26Speaker 4: make it second and four. You know, instead of running
- 13:29Speaker 4: the ball into the line and making it second and nine.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I think the runs, the run attempts in this game,
- 13:35Speaker 4: unless it gets out of hand, you know, Patriots have
- 13:36Speaker 4: a big lead or something in the second half. You're
- 13:39Speaker 4: grinding out the clock or whatever.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 13:41Speaker 4: But when the game is still sort of in the balance,
- 13:44Speaker 4: I don't expect it. Maybe two-thirds passing in this game,
- 13:47Speaker 4: I would expect. So I think you can get by
- 13:49Speaker 4: with just Stevenson, provided that he stays healthy. If something
- 13:53Speaker 4: were to happen to Stevenson in the game and you
- 13:54Speaker 4: don't have Henderson to fall back on, then it's look
- 13:58Speaker 4: out below. I think you're talking about, what, Corey Kiner?
- 14:02Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:02Speaker 4: He's been here a week.
- 14:04Speaker 10: Right.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Hassan Haskins maybe gets promoted from the practice squad. Maybe
- 14:08Speaker 4: Land Larrison gets promoted. I don't know.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:10Speaker 4: But those are all question marks.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Just some numbers on Corey Conner's got 12 career carries.
- 14:13Speaker 2: He was one year last year. Haskins has been in
- 14:16Speaker 2: the league a little longer, 76 career carries. He's played
- 14:18Speaker 2: 229 special team snaps, too, which is another point I'll
- 14:21Speaker 2: get into later.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Jack, how concerned are you just going with Ramondre?
- 14:24Speaker 8: Well, I'm actually very concerned because watching that game back,
- 14:29Speaker 8: you were reminded of how much of it was almost
- 14:32Speaker 8: like a boxer who smelled blood. You know, the Seahawks
- 14:34Speaker 8: had the Patriots in the corner of the ring, and
- 14:36Speaker 8: they were just teeing off, right?
- 14:38Speaker 4: They could have their way.
- 14:39Speaker 8: They knew the Patriots had to pass, and they understood
- 14:41Speaker 8: that this offensive line for the Patriots could not handle
- 14:44Speaker 8: what we're throwing at them. And it truly was like
- 14:47Speaker 8: a boxer who smelled blood just teeing off on the
- 14:50Speaker 8: New England Patriots, that offensive line, Drake, May, et cetera, right?
- 14:53Speaker 8: And a way to combat that is to run the
- 14:55Speaker 8: football and establish the run. And that's what's concerning is
- 14:57Speaker 8: not having that one-two punch that you get so excited
- 15:00Speaker 8: about when thinking about the Patriots' run game. If they
- 15:02Speaker 8: don't have it, I should say, and Travion Henderson can't go,
- 15:05Speaker 8: it definitely is worrisome for me as someone who would
- 15:08Speaker 8: like to see that team establish the run early. And
- 15:11Speaker 8: to me, another way to get ahead of the sticks
- 15:12Speaker 8: is also, okay, a successful run play.
- 15:15Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 15:15Speaker 8: A five, five yard reminder, Stevenson, you know, you run
- 15:18Speaker 8: a duo, you run in power, just something to establish
- 15:21Speaker 8: it and get movement on that interior, which I don't
- 15:24Speaker 8: wish that upon my worst enemy, having to deal with
- 15:26Speaker 8: those two in the middle. I mean, Leonard Williams and
- 15:28Speaker 8: Murphy like that is like Paul said, as good as
- 15:30Speaker 8: it gets, but if you can get on them and
- 15:32Speaker 8: wear them down over the course of four quarters, it
- 15:34Speaker 8: helps keep that blitz heavy momentum. I should say simulated
- 15:37Speaker 8: pressure heavy, as we saw in the super bowl, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 8: Mike McDaniel or Mike McDonald, that offense, you know, I mean, defense,
- 15:43Speaker 8: you know, honest.
- 15:44Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Paul, what do you see? You've seen quite a few
- 15:46Speaker 2: super bowl banners go up here over the years. So
- 15:48Speaker 2: what are those? Is there a theme in those games?
- 15:51Speaker 2: I know you said sometimes, I mean, the famous one,
- 15:53Speaker 2: Kansas city beat the Patriots in 2017, ran all over
- 15:55Speaker 2: him with Korean hump. But how did you feel like
- 15:57Speaker 2: those games unfold? Cause I know you're a little bit,
- 15:59Speaker 2: you feel like there's a little pressure on the team.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I think it's just weird. Sometimes a weird dynamic in
- 16:04Speaker 4: the stadium. I, One thing that I've kind of noticed
- 16:07Speaker 4: is the home team tends to get off to a
- 16:09Speaker 4: slow start. And I do think there's kind of like
- 16:12Speaker 4: an emotional hangover to everything that's going on. In general terms,
- 16:16Speaker 4: the home team finds a way to win the game.
- 16:19Speaker 4: But I think if you look at the sample size,
- 16:21Speaker 4: maybe the last 10 years or so, and again, Jack,
- 16:25Speaker 4: this is what I do. I do no research on
- 16:27Speaker 4: these things. I just sort of go off the top
- 16:29Speaker 4: of my head. And anecdotally, sometimes I'm Completely off base.
- 16:35Speaker 4: But anecdotally, I would tell you that the home team
- 16:38Speaker 4: generally wins. The defending champ generally wins and generally doesn't
- 16:42Speaker 4: cover because I think it's usually kind of a slow
- 16:46Speaker 4: buildup and they find a way to win at the end.
- 16:48Speaker 4: I think the Eagles did that with the Cowboys. You know,
- 16:51Speaker 4: it was kind of a back and forth game, but
- 16:53Speaker 4: they didn't really look all that great. We saw Detroit
- 16:57Speaker 4: go in and beat Kansas City a few years back.
- 17:01Speaker 4: You talked about the Chiefs coming to New England and
- 17:04Speaker 4: beating the Patriots. I just think it's a weird kind
- 17:07Speaker 4: of you spend the whole offseason saying last year is
- 17:10Speaker 4: last year. What we did was great. That's done. We
- 17:13Speaker 4: have to establish an identity for the 26 season now.
- 17:17Speaker 4: And then you go out on the field and everybody's saying, wow,
- 17:19Speaker 4: you guys were great last year. Look at that banner.
- 17:22Speaker 4: You know, it's just think it's kind of mentally challenging.
- 17:25Speaker 4: a difficult spot for some, some of the teams that
- 17:27Speaker 4: do it.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Good atmosphere though. I mean, I think that'll probably,
- 17:30Speaker 2: it'll be a while.
- 17:31Speaker 6: I mean, no matter what, it's going to be a
- 17:32Speaker 6: good atmosphere there.
- 17:33Speaker 4: I mean, Mike, you talked about, you know, you were
- 17:36Speaker 4: there in 2008 when they weren't even good.
- 17:39Speaker 2: No, they love their football there. And that's one stadium
- 17:41Speaker 2: that seems like it was designed to be loud. And,
- 17:44Speaker 2: you know, you just got to respect fans that are
- 17:46Speaker 2: that into it. And now they're going to, you know,
- 17:47Speaker 2: raise their second Superbowl banner. It's a lot for the
- 17:50Speaker 2: Patriots to get prepared for it. It seems like they've
- 17:53Speaker 2: been taking steps throughout the summer to try to get
- 17:55Speaker 2: ready for it, but I think until you actually get
- 17:58Speaker 2: out there and have to execute with a lot of
- 18:00Speaker 2: new guys that you haven't really played with before, you
- 18:03Speaker 2: don't know.
- 18:03Speaker 8: Well, that's something I really want to touch on is
- 18:05Speaker 8: a lot of the talk this offseason is about Drake
- 18:07Speaker 8: May with another full offseason with Josh McDaniels, right?
- 18:10Speaker 4: Year two, how's that going to look?
- 18:11Speaker 8: Well, you've got an offense under a new coordinator who
- 18:14Speaker 8: wasn't even in the building last year in Seattle, and
- 18:15Speaker 8: I think that's something that the Patriots have a real
- 18:17Speaker 8: leg up on in this matchup as well. Drake and
- 18:20Speaker 8: Josh are working on... you know, okay, what's the next
- 18:23Speaker 8: step for us, right? Is the next step, Drake, you
- 18:25Speaker 8: kind of taking more over, you being a general client scrimmage,
- 18:28Speaker 8: getting a better understanding of the offense as a whole,
- 18:30Speaker 8: whereas they're just, they're still learning each other over there.
- 18:32Speaker 8: And when you get a week one matchup like that,
- 18:33Speaker 8: that is very intriguing.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I think I'd want to put them in conflict though.
- 18:38Speaker 2: You know, like I think if the game unfolds, In
- 18:40Speaker 2: Seattle's favor, I think then it's not going to matter
- 18:43Speaker 2: all that much. But if you get them down or
- 18:45Speaker 2: you stop the run, they can't run the ball, and
- 18:49Speaker 2: now he's got to start to get creative. Then maybe
- 18:51Speaker 2: you start to put some pressure on them.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and I don't know how the Brian Flurry era
- 18:55Speaker 4: is going to work in Seattle. The guy's never been
- 18:58Speaker 4: a coordinator.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Was he the tight ends coach in San Francisco?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah, which it's a little different in San Francisco because
- 19:05Speaker 4: Shanahan basically is the offensive coordinator.
- 19:08Speaker 11: Right.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Um, so he comes from, you know, a similar system.
- 19:12Speaker 4: So like, I'm not saying that this guy doesn't, I
- 19:14Speaker 4: don't know if he's any good is the short answer
- 19:17Speaker 4: to this, but if he has, uh, any ability at all,
- 19:21Speaker 4: the Patriots don't know what he's going to do. So
- 19:24Speaker 4: I think that can be mitigated provided that he knows
- 19:26Speaker 4: what he's doing, provided that it's been a good, you know,
- 19:30Speaker 4: a good buildup for that offense and Sam Donald, um,
- 19:34Speaker 4: I'm expecting to see a much better Seattle offense than
- 19:36Speaker 4: they saw in the Super Bowl. I think Kenneth Walker
- 19:39Speaker 4: was terrific, but I think the passing game left a
- 19:43Speaker 4: lot of plays in the field in that game. Jackson
- 19:46Speaker 4: Smith and Jigba, I thought, was open quite frequently in
- 19:49Speaker 4: that game, and they just didn't get in the ball.
- 19:51Speaker 4: I don't expect that to be the case again. So
- 19:55Speaker 4: I think the Patriots' defense is going to have to
- 19:56Speaker 4: play much better than what we saw all summer to
- 20:00Speaker 4: meet this challenge.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Well, Christian Gazal's got 101 million reasons why, maybe.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Maybe we'll get.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Well, 102.
- 20:05Speaker 5: 102 million.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Guaranteed.
- 20:05Speaker 2: But, yeah, four years, 135 million, so.
- 20:10Speaker 4: That's what I think. I mean, that's kind of that's
- 20:12Speaker 4: the story of the day. You know, we.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Always talk about, like, is this going to affect the
- 20:16Speaker 2: team negatively? Like, does this does this affect the team
- 20:19Speaker 2: positively here as you're in Seattle and you're like, they
- 20:21Speaker 2: took care of our guy. Everyone's dapping up Gonzo. We're
- 20:25Speaker 2: happy for him. He's happy. All of a sudden, right
- 20:28Speaker 2: before you have to play your first game of the season,
- 20:29Speaker 2: you get a big. Boost kind of, you know, I
- 20:32Speaker 2: think there's.
- 20:32Speaker 6: Something to be said for that.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Good for morale.
- 20:34Speaker 6: I mean, this is how they, this is what they
- 20:35Speaker 6: want to be doing, right? Drafting and developing.
- 20:37Speaker 7: I mean, it's amazing that Gonzalez was even there for
- 20:40Speaker 7: the Patriots to take.
- 20:41Speaker 6: Those were some dark, what was it like a stretch of.
- 20:43Speaker 7: 10 years that they didn't resign a player since like
- 20:46Speaker 7: Dante Hightower?
- 20:48Speaker 2: It's been a while. Yeah.
- 20:49Speaker 7: And like they should have signed Chandler Jones like right
- 20:51Speaker 7: after that and didn't and he went on to have
- 20:53Speaker 7: a great career, but it's like, that's the track we
- 20:56Speaker 7: need to get back on.
- 20:57Speaker 6: Supplemented in the.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Draft, supplemented in free agency when you have to.
- 21:03Speaker 7: You're in win-now mode, bringing a guy at market rate,
- 21:06Speaker 7: but that's not what you want to be doing year
- 21:08Speaker 7: after year. You want guys like Christian Gonzalez out in
- 21:12Speaker 7: the community, as a player on the field.
- 21:14Speaker 6: That's who you build a franchise with.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Paul, do you think they have to make a concerted
- 21:19Speaker 2: effort next year to not let the Drake-May negotiations drag
- 21:23Speaker 2: on like this and be kind of overshadowed things in
- 21:26Speaker 2: camp like it did, wouldn't ideally be able to get
- 21:28Speaker 2: that done so it doesn't become a thing?
- 21:29Speaker 4: Ideally, I would think, you know, look, now everybody's just
- 21:33Speaker 4: going to say, what's the difference? It's done. You went
- 21:35Speaker 4: into the season. I would say, ideally, you avoid all
- 21:38Speaker 4: that drama. Hopefully, that's the case. We'll leave that to
- 21:41Speaker 4: next year. But for now... No more extension talks, please. No,
- 21:46Speaker 4: but I would just say, just to piggyback on Alex's point,
- 21:49Speaker 4: I do think it's good for morale, and I do
- 21:51Speaker 4: think there's players in that locker room that look at
- 21:52Speaker 4: that and say... okay, they did right by our guy.
- 21:55Speaker 4: He deserves this. He's been a good player for us,
- 21:59Speaker 4: and he got a fair market deal. I think that
- 22:04Speaker 4: does send a good message to other guys. Forget about
- 22:07Speaker 4: Drake May. We all know Drake May is going to
- 22:09Speaker 4: be in line for a contract. If he has another
- 22:11Speaker 4: year like last year and he cements himself as one
- 22:14Speaker 4: of the top quarterbacks in football, that's going to take
- 22:16Speaker 4: care of itself. But there are other guys that are
- 22:19Speaker 4: going to have their contracts coming due as well that
- 22:22Speaker 4: want to know the Patriots are willing to resign their
- 22:24Speaker 4: own guys to big money deals and not just going
- 22:28Speaker 4: out on the market and signing Milton Williams to a
- 22:30Speaker 4: big money deal and guys like that.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 4: I mean, it seems like it's kind of lined out.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I mean, unless they don't sign Drake May, which would be,
- 22:35Speaker 2: you know, cold red, you know, level of concern, but
- 22:39Speaker 2: you know, Milton Williams last year, Gonzalez this year, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 2: I mean, it's, it's going to start a little bit
- 22:43Speaker 2: of a trend here, hopefully. And, and, But the bigger
- 22:45Speaker 2: trend is having the guys to actually, you want to
- 22:48Speaker 2: resign just because you don't have the guys to resign
- 22:50Speaker 2: because they're not good. You know, you want to have
- 22:52Speaker 2: guys that are good to resign. And that's, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 2: starting to stack some success here.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that was one of those things. Why did they
- 22:58Speaker 4: never resign anybody? Because they didn't have anybody worth resigning.
- 23:01Speaker 4: And the ones that they did have that were worth
- 23:03Speaker 4: it in their defense, they have resigned. You know, the
- 23:07Speaker 4: Michael Wenyus and the Marcus Joneses and now Christian Gonzalez's.
- 23:11Speaker 4: When you have a player that you draft that's worth resigning,
- 23:14Speaker 4: continuing to work, uh, develop, they've, they've taken care of them.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And I had the list last week. It's in my,
- 23:20Speaker 4: it's in my many, many sheets.
- 23:22Speaker 2: No, that's true.
- 23:22Speaker 4: It's Michael Wendell, Christian Barmore, Reminders Stevenson, Marcus Jones, and
- 23:26Speaker 4: Christian Gonzalez.
- 23:27Speaker 7: It's the lack of like first rounders, I think since Dante,
- 23:30Speaker 7: that's glaring. And like, you could give your reasons for
- 23:32Speaker 7: why they didn't resign Chandler Jones that we don't need
- 23:35Speaker 7: to get into, but like, that's a long drought, but
- 23:39Speaker 7: it's cause that top heavy talent just hadn't been found
- 23:42Speaker 7: here for a while.
- 23:43Speaker 6: And, Now we're back, I hope.
- 23:45Speaker 8: There's something about, too, the way Mike Vrabel and the
- 23:48Speaker 8: Patriots burst onto the scene last year that made you
- 23:50Speaker 8: forget this is a rebuild. It feels like they've been
- 23:53Speaker 8: doing it for years now just because of the success,
- 23:56Speaker 8: how quickly he established his.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Presence in New England. They crushed the draft. They crushed
- 23:59Speaker 6: free agency instantly off the bat.
- 24:01Speaker 8: It almost makes you feel like he's been here for
- 24:03Speaker 8: longer than he has been. But this is a great sign,
- 24:06Speaker 8: great message in the Mike Vrabel era in New England
- 24:09Speaker 8: that stuff like this is going to get done with
- 24:11Speaker 8: him and Elliot Wolfe and company at the helm.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it still might be a little bit of a
- 24:14Speaker 2: pain in the ass, but it seems like things are
- 24:17Speaker 2: actually getting done, though, which is a good sign.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Right, and then just, you know, to sort of cut
- 24:21Speaker 4: this off of the past, because I think Alex is right.
- 24:23Speaker 4: When they had guys that were worthy that they chose,
- 24:26Speaker 4: they were interested in retaining them. Well, there's another draft
- 24:30Speaker 4: worth of class that's coming up next year that'll be due,
- 24:34Speaker 4: and there's only going to be one of them that's
- 24:36Speaker 4: going to get re-signed, and that's Drake May. You know,
- 24:39Speaker 4: because that's another draft class that's kind of all gone now,
- 24:43Speaker 4: you know?
- 24:44Speaker 2: So it's two years ago.
- 24:45Speaker 4: You know, we'll see what happens in a couple of
- 24:47Speaker 4: years with the 25 class that you have guys like
- 24:50Speaker 4: Woodson and Henderson and Campbell and, you know, see how
- 24:54Speaker 4: many of those guys end up getting retained. That's what
- 24:56Speaker 4: my question is.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You know, all these new players that they added both
- 24:59Speaker 2: on the roster and the practice squad is can any
- 25:01Speaker 2: of these signings develop this year and maybe offset some
- 25:06Speaker 2: of the draft misses that they had, you know, two, three,
- 25:08Speaker 2: four years ago now, can they start to build depth
- 25:11Speaker 2: that way? It's a whole separate department, right? It's like
- 25:14Speaker 2: this is like the pro scouts now trying to maybe
- 25:17Speaker 2: find some gems guys they liked in the draft to
- 25:19Speaker 2: try to bring in. So I think that they need
- 25:22Speaker 2: to have some of those guys have success this year
- 25:25Speaker 2: because I said.
- 25:25Speaker 4: It about the running back. Everyone's talking about the edge position.
- 25:28Speaker 2: You know, you're looking at week one and you're saying
- 25:30Speaker 2: the depth ain't great right here. And it's not just.
- 25:33Speaker 2: And I don't want to get too carried away with
- 25:34Speaker 2: the depth because they have a lot of star players now,
- 25:36Speaker 2: which I'd much rather be like, well, it's A.J. Brown,
- 25:38Speaker 2: Drake May, and complaining about this than complaining about not
- 25:43Speaker 2: having the star players.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I'd much rather have this roster than the roster they
- 25:45Speaker 4: had two years ago before Braybill got here.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Right, right, right. So at some point they've got to
- 25:52Speaker 2: start finding these guys because I don't know how the
- 25:55Speaker 2: season's going to go with a couple injuries at edge
- 25:57Speaker 2: or at linebacker or at tight end or at running back.
- 26:01Speaker 2: And we said the same thing last year about the depth.
- 26:03Speaker 2: And again, it's like, it's nice to have, but some
- 26:05Speaker 2: of these guys are probably gonna be thrust into the fire.
- 26:07Speaker 2: And you're just hoping that maybe you find some gems
- 26:09Speaker 2: that can build some of this depth, because if they
- 26:11Speaker 2: keep kind of having bad drafts, I mean, they've got
- 26:13Speaker 2: two okay drafts. We're seeing how these kind of returns
- 26:16Speaker 2: on these last two come in, but they got to
- 26:18Speaker 2: start hitting on these guys because no matter how many
- 26:19Speaker 2: star players you have, it's, it's about, you know, one
- 26:21Speaker 2: to 53, right?
- 26:22Speaker 11: Paul.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:24Speaker 8: That's the talking point you guys have spoken a lot
- 26:26Speaker 8: about on not only the pre and post game show,
- 26:27Speaker 8: but also on filters. The fact that last year you
- 26:29Speaker 8: hit on a lot of those one year guys this year,
- 26:32Speaker 8: you really didn't. And especially when you think about paying
- 26:34Speaker 8: Drake may next year, the draft becomes even more important.
- 26:37Speaker 4: You've got these guys on rookie deals.
- 26:38Speaker 8: And one thing I do want to ask you guys
- 26:41Speaker 8: is Drake, maybe a quarterback, the most, you know, maybe
- 26:44Speaker 8: coveted position in all of sports.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Does that change things negotiation wise?
- 26:48Speaker 8: Or do you think, you know, it just makes me
- 26:50Speaker 8: wonder if they're going to want to get it done
- 26:51Speaker 8: just because of how high profile the quarterback position is
- 26:54Speaker 8: rather than a corner.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:56Speaker 4: I don't have it. You guys can do this. I
- 26:59Speaker 4: can't do it yet. Right.
- 27:02Speaker 13: Today.
- 27:02Speaker 4: I felt like I got out of prison. I know
- 27:05Speaker 4: when I, when I woke up and find out that
- 27:06Speaker 4: Gonzalez had signed.
- 27:07Speaker 7: I wonder what Drake's mentality will be towards it. Cause like, Naively,
- 27:12Speaker 7: I'm like, he's kind of like an aw shucks guy.
- 27:14Speaker 7: He doesn't seem like that money motivated, but everyone is now.
- 27:17Speaker 4: That and $ 70 million annually.
- 27:20Speaker 7: Remember when Bryce Harper signed that crazy first extension? I
- 27:24Speaker 7: forget what the money actually was, but I remember it
- 27:27Speaker 7: was like, oh my God, look at these contracts players
- 27:29Speaker 7: are getting now. And I think Drake Mays is going
- 27:31Speaker 7: to have a Bryce Harper type contract that's just like,
- 27:34Speaker 7: oh my God, this is beyond baseball money.
- 27:37Speaker 4: He more than likely will be the highest paid player
- 27:39Speaker 4: in football when he signs. I mean, I'm not going
- 27:43Speaker 4: to guarantee it, but more than likely.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Well, I don't want to belabor it, but, I mean,
- 27:46Speaker 2: it is interesting with the other two quarterbacks drafted ahead
- 27:49Speaker 2: of him how that all plays out, how those seasons
- 27:52Speaker 2: look like, you know, and now are we looking at it.
- 27:53Speaker 6: And what those two guys accomplished this year to try
- 27:56Speaker 6: to get, you know.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Right, and that's probably where we're going to spend the
- 27:58Speaker 2: whole offseason, stacking guys up and who's worth what and
- 28:01Speaker 2: who goes when.
- 28:01Speaker 4: And it could be three others, depending on how it
- 28:04Speaker 4: goes for Bo Nix, you know, because I think his
- 28:08Speaker 4: value might be on the rise after that AFC championship game.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 28:11Speaker 4: So we'll see. I think that's a pretty good roster
- 28:14Speaker 4: Denver has. If they win 13 games or so again,
- 28:18Speaker 4: he's going to want to get paid too. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:21Speaker 4: All right, we can get off the contract talk.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 28:24Speaker 4: I don't have to do my Andy Dufresne getting out
- 28:26Speaker 4: of 500 yards of filth. That's how I felt this
- 28:30Speaker 4: morning when I woke up and found out that Gonzalez
- 28:32Speaker 4: had signed. I know, me too.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Thank God. Well, I was surprised that it seemed like
- 28:36Speaker 2: people were awake waiting for it at like 2 a.m.
- 28:38Speaker 2: And I know some of our crew was out on
- 28:40Speaker 2: the West Coast, but I woke up and I'm like,
- 28:42Speaker 2: what's all these notifications from like the middle of the night?
- 28:44Speaker 2: You know, some of it's like Evan and Fred, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 2: out on the West Coast.
- 28:47Speaker 4: Did you have notifications, Chad? I don't do the notifications,
- 28:51Speaker 4: so I just went up and I said, oh.
- 28:52Speaker 6: You didn't have like Twitter alerts on?
- 28:54Speaker 4: God, no. I do.
- 28:55Speaker 6: I'm not saying you have to wake up to.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Them, but you don't have them?
- 28:57Speaker 4: I don't have Twitter alerts.
- 28:58Speaker 8: I do have the notifications, but I was driving home
- 29:01Speaker 8: from Bangor to Arundel, and I pulled in the house
- 29:04Speaker 8: at the perfect time.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Weren't we all?
- 29:08Speaker 2: What's that drive like, Jack?
- 29:09Speaker 4: Sorry, so it's about two hours straight. It's two hours
- 29:11Speaker 4: straight of no turns, just straight woods and highway.
- 29:16Speaker 2: No streetlights.
- 29:17Speaker 6: There's no streetlights out there.
- 29:20Speaker 4: But it was perfect. I pulled in the driveway. News broke.
- 29:22Speaker 4: It was money for me.
- 29:24Speaker 2: No, it was nice. I was surprised then because as
- 29:26Speaker 2: I was kind of scrolling back, I'm like, some of
- 29:28Speaker 2: these dudes woke up at 3 a.m. just to get
- 29:30Speaker 2: a tweet out. Cleary-eyed.
- 29:33Speaker 8: It definitely made me wonder and think of the whole, okay,
- 29:35Speaker 8: Schefter brings his phone in the shower.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Do they sleep?
- 29:37Speaker 5: Truly.
- 29:40Speaker 8: It makes me wonder how these guys rest for a second.
- 29:43Speaker 8: Because imagine you decide, okay, I'm going to get a
- 29:45Speaker 8: good night's sleep tonight. And then you wake up and
- 29:47Speaker 8: you miss the gonzo scoop. That would have been heartbreaking.
- 29:49Speaker 6: It sounds like a miserable life.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Yeah. Constantly on call for potential breaking. And the first
- 29:54Speaker 4: one I saw, like, now again, this morning was Jeremy Fowler.
- 29:58Speaker 4: And it looked, it was like 1253. Yeah. So is
- 30:02Speaker 4: he getting informed at like, you know, nine.
- 30:06Speaker 6: 53, 1242.
- 30:08Speaker 2: True. What's that?
- 30:09Speaker 6: Where, where's he based?
- 30:11Speaker 4: Uh, I don't know.
- 30:11Speaker 6: LA, New York.
- 30:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 30:12Speaker 4: I mean, I'm just going by the tweet said 1240,
- 30:15Speaker 4: 1253 or whatever.
- 30:17Speaker 2: So I assume that's Eastern time.
- 30:18Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 30:19Speaker 4: I think Fowler's a Miami guy. So I don't know
- 30:22Speaker 4: where he is at the time, but yeah, I didn't
- 30:26Speaker 4: find out until... This morning I woke up, took a shower,
- 30:28Speaker 4: got dressed.
- 30:29Speaker 6: 6 a.m., alarm went off. What, did the lock screen?
- 30:31Speaker 6: Because I have tweet alerts.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Well, that's the first thing you do is look at
- 30:34Speaker 4: your phone.
- 30:35Speaker 6: I locked it back, and I put it.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Back down, and I snooze for another 15. So you
- 30:39Speaker 4: don't wake up and look at your phone. What do
- 30:40Speaker 4: you do? You wake up? What's your alarm?
- 30:43Speaker 6: Your phone's not your alarm?
- 30:45Speaker 4: I don't see.
- 30:46Speaker 6: You just wake up with the sun?
- 30:47Speaker 4: When you reach a certain age, you do not need
- 30:50Speaker 4: an alarm. Can confirm.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:52Speaker 4: So Fred teases me about this. I probably am the
- 30:56Speaker 4: only person that has a phone that does not have
- 30:59Speaker 4: the phone in my bedroom. Really?
- 31:01Speaker 11: No.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Good for you. I need to start doing that. I
- 31:02Speaker 4: need to find a way to do that.
- 31:04Speaker 2: No.
- 31:05Speaker 7: But it's not for like esoteric, like he doesn't care
- 31:08Speaker 7: about the Wi-Fi signals messing with his sleep.
- 31:10Speaker 2: It's just.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Just don't care. I don't want to have it there
- 31:12Speaker 4: because then I'll look at it. You have a house phone?
- 31:14Speaker 6: You are the type of person I feel like that
- 31:15Speaker 6: could still have a flip phone.
- 31:17Speaker 11: No.
- 31:17Speaker 6: Are you sure?
- 31:18Speaker 2: No.
- 31:18Speaker 4: I think you could. No, I like these phones.
- 31:20Speaker 2: They're very easy to use. Do you still have a
- 31:21Speaker 2: house phone call?
- 31:23Speaker 4: I have a landline. Okay, so in case of emergency. No,
- 31:27Speaker 4: my phone would ring and I'd hear it. It's only
- 31:29Speaker 4: in the kitchen. It's not like I don't, yeah. So
- 31:31Speaker 4: you're leaving the ringer on.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I'm not Fred.
- 31:32Speaker 4: I don't live in a house that, you know, is
- 31:34Speaker 4: worthy of a podcast.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Your butler would get you.
- 31:37Speaker 4: You know, my butler answers the phone. So your ringer's on, though?
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Okay, all right. Does anyone call you anymore? I feel
- 31:43Speaker 4: like nobody calls.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I don't get phone calls.
- 31:46Speaker 4: No, but I do, in the back of my mind,
- 31:47Speaker 4: I do wonder, like, God forbid something happens in my family,
- 31:51Speaker 4: someone would call, but I would hear the phone ring. Yeah. Well,
- 31:54Speaker 4: now I feel bad for someone that texts at 1 a.m.
- 31:56Speaker 4: You probably heard a ding.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Can you guys believe this?
- 31:59Speaker 2: We're all asleep, bro.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I didn't hear that, so.
- 32:02Speaker 9: Good.
- 32:03Speaker 4: I don't feel better.
- 32:04Speaker 2: I don't know. I also just feel like I'm, we're
- 32:07Speaker 2: losing our minds with the amount of money that's being
- 32:09Speaker 2: thrown around in sports. And it's just like, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 2: like I, like I can't look at a hundred million
- 32:13Speaker 2: dollars and even wrap my head around what it would
- 32:15Speaker 2: be like to have that much money.
- 32:17Speaker 4: And it's like, all right.
- 32:18Speaker 2: They still didn't give him enough. It could be worse.
- 32:20Speaker 4: It could be Frazier Minton. You're getting like 73 million,
- 32:23Speaker 4: 20 million a year.
- 32:25Speaker 10: Oh, great.
- 32:25Speaker 4: 7 million a year for that day.
- 32:28Speaker 2: All right, well, I feel like we've sufficiently set the table,
- 32:31Speaker 2: and now I'm going to do my Bob's read, Paul,

- 33:08Speaker 4: I jumped.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Did you like my cadence? What was your cadence, Paul?
- 33:11Speaker 2: Did you guys agree 19 or white 80? You guys
- 33:16Speaker 2: were clapping back then, right? Down, set.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Down, set.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Down. Let's check in here on the hotline.
- 33:26Speaker 4: If I put it on two, Steve DeSantis would jump offside.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Mark in Connecticut was waiting for us right from the get-go.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Hey, Mark, what's going on?
- 33:37Speaker 2: Mark? Oh, hi, Mark. Oh, hi, Mark.
- 33:39Speaker 6: That's what he's waiting for.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Oh, bye, Mark. All right, sorry, Mark. Call back. All right,
- 33:44Speaker 2: Herm's down in D.C. Hey, Herm.
- 33:47Speaker 9: Hey, what's going on? It's a good day to be
- 33:49Speaker 9: a patriot.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Isn't every day a good day to be a patriot?
- 33:53Speaker 6: We're all patriots.
- 33:54Speaker 2: We're all patriots.
- 33:56Speaker 13: That is true.
- 33:56Speaker 14: That is true.
- 33:57Speaker 9: Actually, Paul, I wanted to give you a little bit
- 34:01Speaker 9: of props for once. Oh.
- 34:05Speaker 6: Because.
- 34:06Speaker 9: I saw a clip, and full transparency, out of watch,
- 34:11Speaker 9: felt a mess because, to be honest with.
- 34:13Speaker 15: You, I think it's a trash show.
- 34:15Speaker 9: But I saw you on it. I was like, okay,
- 34:16Speaker 9: let me just imagine this. But I saw you on it, right?
- 34:21Speaker 9: And I feel like they're obviously the biggest perpetrators of
- 34:26Speaker 9: the narrative that Robert Kraft has achieved, which we really
- 34:31Speaker 9: disagree with, which obviously proved us all wrong today. But
- 34:35Speaker 9: I guess the reason why I wanted to give you
- 34:36Speaker 9: props was, and I was kind of thinking along the
- 34:40Speaker 9: lines of you, I don't think that Robert Kraft had
- 34:45Speaker 9: an opportunity in a long time until, you know, obviously today,
- 34:50Speaker 9: to actually pay somebody, right? So all these individuals who
- 34:54Speaker 9: are always complaining about how Robert Kraft is cheap, how
- 34:56Speaker 9: Robert Kraft is cheap, I'm just trying to figure out
- 35:00Speaker 9: who they wanted to pay. You know what I mean?
- 35:02Speaker 9: At that time. Now, obviously, if he would have done
- 35:05Speaker 9: that deal with Gonzo, that would have been a different story.
- 35:07Speaker 9: But I guess I'll just say, when you broke down
- 35:11Speaker 9: all the players that we drafted that, you know, obviously
- 35:15Speaker 9: weren't worth, you know, record-setting money, that kind of, like,
- 35:20Speaker 9: I think, puts it into perspective of, I guess, who a.
- 35:30Speaker 9: Who they didn't pay that wasn't worth their money, essentially.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, that's the problem that we've talked about
- 35:42Speaker 4: really ad nauseum at this point is the drafting. And
- 35:45Speaker 4: they haven't had a lot of players that have been
- 35:47Speaker 4: worthy of second contracts. I think that will be tested
- 35:50Speaker 4: a little bit. Well, certainly the Patriots hope that will
- 35:53Speaker 4: be tested in a couple of years with the class
- 35:56Speaker 4: from 25. They had contributions from a lot of those
- 36:01Speaker 4: guys as rookies. So, you know, I think it's reasonable
- 36:05Speaker 4: to expect two years from now when those are all,
- 36:07Speaker 4: all those guys are three years into their deals. You
- 36:10Speaker 4: probably have a guy or two, you know, among Will Campbell,
- 36:13Speaker 4: Trevion Henderson, Kyle Williams, Craig Woodson. You know, even if
- 36:20Speaker 4: you wanted to go further down the line with like
- 36:22Speaker 4: Andy Borgalis, you know, there's going to be guys that
- 36:24Speaker 4: are going to be up for, Up for debate. And
- 36:27Speaker 4: we'll see how many of those guys that they end
- 36:29Speaker 4: up retaining. Because that's when I think the rubber will
- 36:33Speaker 4: meet the road. Thanks, Herm. Appreciate the call. I kind
- 36:37Speaker 4: of wonder about Will Campbell.
- 36:38Speaker 2: That's an interesting one. Left tackle, another premium position that
- 36:41Speaker 2: would be big bucks if he were to play really
- 36:43Speaker 2: well and be in consideration for a big deal like that,
- 36:46Speaker 2: especially when, like we talked about, Big deal, Gonzalez. Probably
- 36:50Speaker 2: a big deal for May. And then you ready to
- 36:52Speaker 2: do another big deal for Will Campbell third year in
- 36:54Speaker 2: a row?
- 36:54Speaker 8: That's what makes a game like this tomorrow night for
- 36:57Speaker 8: Will Campbell so huge. You're not going to pay a
- 36:58Speaker 8: guy top dollar to look like that in the playoffs.
- 37:01Speaker 8: Injury or not, you're just not going to sign up
- 37:02Speaker 8: for that. this is such a massive year for him
- 37:05Speaker 8: in terms of proving that he's got not only for
- 37:07Speaker 8: a potential contract, but also his spot as the left
- 37:10Speaker 8: tackle on this team. And that's what I'm most excited about.
- 37:12Speaker 8: You know, I understand, you know, the old line guy,
- 37:14Speaker 8: I feel like that is becoming a common theme, but
- 37:16Speaker 8: we all got our thing. I'm so fired up to
- 37:18Speaker 8: watch him and Wilson and see if they've taken a
- 37:21Speaker 8: step forward this off season on how they can protect
- 37:24Speaker 8: and just how they look.
- 37:25Speaker 11: Right.
- 37:25Speaker 4: I mean, we'll Campbell look like a guy last year.
- 37:27Speaker 8: Wilson looked like a guy last year in that Superbowl
- 37:29Speaker 8: where they were drowning right in a, in a sea of, of,
- 37:32Speaker 8: defense that was the Seahawks.
- 37:34Speaker 2: That's why I brought up what I brought up last about,
- 37:36Speaker 2: you know, being too amped up and he's a guy
- 37:38Speaker 2: that will Campbell. I mean, I think he's, he's pretty
- 37:40Speaker 2: even keeled, but like he's one that, you know, caught,
- 37:42Speaker 2: caught a lot of crap about this game and, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 2: going in there and I don't think he's like this,
- 37:47Speaker 2: but I, you know, I would personally maybe feel a
- 37:50Speaker 2: little bit like I got to go in and play
- 37:51Speaker 2: with something to prove, maybe try to do too much,
- 37:53Speaker 2: you know, and I just don't want it. It's week
- 37:55Speaker 2: one of the 26 season. I don't think he needs
- 37:57Speaker 2: to go in there and, you know, pitch a shutout
- 38:00Speaker 2: and show everybody they were wrong and, you know, do
- 38:02Speaker 2: all that stuff.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Just go out there.
- 38:03Speaker 2: And I think this is the message too, from the team,
- 38:05Speaker 2: you know, take it snap to snap, but he's one
- 38:07Speaker 2: guy that I just worry about maybe a little bit
- 38:09Speaker 2: trying to do too much.
- 38:11Speaker 8: You know what that makes me, Paul, I want to
- 38:12Speaker 8: ask you this as someone who's been around for a while,
- 38:16Speaker 8: is the full playbook open tomorrow? I understand Superbowl 60 rematch.
- 38:20Speaker 8: I think that means more for the fans and selling
- 38:23Speaker 8: the game and selling opening.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Night than it might for the actual season.
- 38:27Speaker 8: Because at the end of the day, it's an at-a-conference game.
- 38:32Speaker 8: It's not like there's a committee on the college football
- 38:33Speaker 8: playoffs who's deciding, hey, the Patriots, are they getting in
- 38:36Speaker 8: the playoffs or not?
- 38:38Speaker 4: I wonder if, are they going to let it loose?
- 38:40Speaker 8: Is it going to be kind of one of those
- 38:41Speaker 8: things where I just think of, the experience that I
- 38:43Speaker 8: have is, we go play a big at-a-conference game in college, right?
- 38:47Speaker 8: You want to win the game. You're going to do
- 38:48Speaker 8: everything you can to win the game. You've got conference
- 38:50Speaker 8: games to worry about later on in the year. You're
- 38:52Speaker 8: not letting it rip. So I wonder if you're going
- 38:56Speaker 8: to see kind of a, not a watered-down version, but
- 38:58Speaker 8: a more.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Simple version of these teams tomorrow night? Or if they're
- 39:01Speaker 4: just going to.
- 39:01Speaker 8: Because that's what I think the Super Bowl, the Seattle
- 39:03Speaker 8: defense was pulling out everything. Anything they had in the chamber,
- 39:07Speaker 8: they were letting it go. Because it's the dang Super Bowl.
- 39:10Speaker 8: I wonder if we're going to see that tomorrow or
- 39:12Speaker 8: if they're going to be a little more tamed.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think you'll see anything tamed.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Now, I think everything in that league is dictated by
- 39:20Speaker 4: game plans, specific game plans. So is the whole... playbook open.
- 39:25Speaker 4: I don't know that, that they could run anything, but
- 39:28Speaker 4: I think Josh McDaniels spent the offseason figuring out what
- 39:32Speaker 4: he wanted to do against this defense. And I would
- 39:35Speaker 4: think that Mike McDonald, and Evan disagrees with you and I, Mike,
- 39:38Speaker 4: on this, I would think Mike McDonald looked at it
- 39:42Speaker 4: and said, I can't just do the same stuff with
- 39:46Speaker 4: Devin Witherspoon that I did last year. and expect them
- 39:48Speaker 4: to not understand how to block it. They're going to
- 39:51Speaker 4: be ready for that. So I'm going to need to
- 39:53Speaker 4: come up with that, but something else, some other kind
- 39:55Speaker 4: of wrinkle. Now, maybe their injuries in the secondary, which
- 39:58Speaker 4: I don't think have gotten nearly enough play. We've been
- 40:00Speaker 4: talking about Eamon Worry for a while, you and I might,
- 40:03Speaker 4: but they also lost Bud Clark. He's out for the year,
- 40:06Speaker 4: who broke his ankle in the preseason. And now his
- 40:09Speaker 4: replacement is probably not going to play. He hasn't practiced
- 40:12Speaker 4: the last two days, did not participate, like not limited,
- 40:15Speaker 4: did not participate. I don't expect those kinds of guys
- 40:18Speaker 4: to play. So you could be down to the third safety.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Maybe they can't do as much of that stuff in
- 40:23Speaker 4: the secondary that they did. They can't be as exotic
- 40:26Speaker 4: because you need to make sure that someone in the
- 40:28Speaker 4: back end is making sure A.J. Brown doesn't run by
- 40:31Speaker 4: somebody or Kyle Williams doesn't run by somebody. So those
- 40:35Speaker 4: kinds of things, I think, can change very specific to
- 40:37Speaker 4: game plan. But I think once the regular season comes
- 40:40Speaker 4: in the NFL, you got to try to win the games.
- 40:42Speaker 4: I know there's a big notion of well, it's an
- 40:44Speaker 4: extension of the preseason. Bill used to perpetrate that on
- 40:48Speaker 4: everybody and I never bought it then and I don't
- 40:49Speaker 4: buy it now. I think these games, they don't play
- 40:51Speaker 4: enough of them. The games are all important. You know?
- 40:54Speaker 2: It's a really interesting thing I've been thinking about this
- 40:56Speaker 2: week of just you get too caught up in like, well,
- 40:58Speaker 2: this is what they did in the Super Bowl and
- 41:00Speaker 2: we beat them on this so now they might adjust
- 41:02Speaker 2: this way so now, so we should do this. Like,
- 41:04Speaker 2: do you, you know, football's such a game where you get,
- 41:06Speaker 2: it's easy to get caught up in all that stuff
- 41:09Speaker 2: whereas maybe the simple answer is like, let's do what
- 41:11Speaker 2: we're really good at, keep it simple, not try to,
- 41:13Speaker 2: you know, overthink too much at this point. We'll start
- 41:15Speaker 2: stacking on the things that we're good at. But I
- 41:18Speaker 2: imagine it's easy to look at that Super Bowl tape
- 41:20Speaker 2: and be like, they got us on this, so we
- 41:21Speaker 2: should do that. You know, like to just put too
- 41:23Speaker 2: much on that game. That's just kind of the theme,
- 41:25Speaker 2: I guess, for me for this show is trying to
- 41:28Speaker 2: put that in.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Proper context for the 2026 season.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And yes, it can be motivation and that you're playing
- 41:33Speaker 2: a good team and you're going to have to play
- 41:35Speaker 2: good teams this year. You're going to have to beat
- 41:37Speaker 2: teams to play this way. So it's a good way
- 41:39Speaker 2: to kick things off. But at the same time, I
- 41:41Speaker 2: don't think you put the whole season on this one game.
- 41:43Speaker 4: It's not a referendum on the season.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I agree.
- 41:45Speaker 4: I mean, just look at what happened last year and
- 41:47Speaker 4: the Patriots came and came out one and two. And,
- 41:49Speaker 4: you know, I don't know, I don't know how many
- 41:51Speaker 4: people would have driven home from that train wreck of
- 41:54Speaker 4: a game against Pittsburgh. With all those turnovers that Alex
- 41:57Speaker 4: talked about earlier in the show.
- 41:58Speaker 7: Do you remember our first show after that game? What
- 42:01Speaker 7: a moment in time. Honestly, I would never listen to
- 42:05Speaker 7: old shows. That's the one I would ever.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Be intrigued to. Were we all depressed? Because I feel
- 42:08Speaker 2: like I was like, is this just going to be
- 42:10Speaker 2: it now?
- 42:10Speaker 6: This is our life now. This is still our life.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Geno Smith haunting our dreams. Like, what is going on? Yeah,
- 42:18Speaker 2: that was not fun.
- 42:18Speaker 4: Alex, you picked the Raiders in that one, though, no?
- 42:20Speaker 6: I did.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Sharp.
- 42:22Speaker 6: Because week one is wacky. That's why I picked the Patriots.
- 42:25Speaker 2: In this one.
- 42:25Speaker 4: Week one is wacky.
- 42:26Speaker 6: It's the best time to see them.
- 42:28Speaker 4: The Raiders game is exactly what Alex said. Fluky week one.
- 42:33Speaker 6: McDaniel's first game.
- 42:34Speaker 4: The Raiders outplayed the Patriots in that game. They deserve
- 42:36Speaker 4: to win. The Pittsburgh game, my God, the Patriots just
- 42:40Speaker 4: handed the game over. And then you could do what
- 42:43Speaker 4: Fred did, because that's what Fred does, and just say,
- 42:47Speaker 4: I come away from this game encouraged. They could win
- 42:50Speaker 4: if they don't mess it up. They easily could have
- 42:52Speaker 4: won if they didn't hand the game away. I'm all
- 42:54Speaker 4: for delusion. Again, it's typical Fred Luck. He ends up
- 42:59Speaker 4: being right for all the wrong reasons.
- 43:02Speaker 8: The power of friendship carries us through.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I just don't know how many other than Fred envision
- 43:09Speaker 4: them rattling off 14 wins based on those first three weeks.
- 43:13Speaker 2: None of us. The closest I can get is just
- 43:15Speaker 2: that you always had the disclaimer of, If Drake May
- 43:18Speaker 2: goes off, all bets are off. And Drake May went off,
- 43:20Speaker 2: and all bets were kind of off.
- 43:22Speaker 4: But I would have said, if Drake May goes off,
- 43:26Speaker 4: maybe they could win 11 or 12 games. I wouldn't
- 43:27Speaker 4: have said 14 games in the Super Bowl. No way
- 43:30Speaker 4: I would have said that.
- 43:31Speaker 2: All right, let's take a visit out to L.A.
- 43:33Speaker 4: With our guy Christian. Hey, Christian, what's going on?
- 43:36Speaker 2: Hey, you guys. Hey, you guys.
- 43:37Speaker 16: Hey, you guys.
- 43:38Speaker 14: So, Paul, as crazy as it is, and as infrequently
- 43:44Speaker 14: as it happens, I'm going to agree with you. I
- 43:46Speaker 14: think no other sport, no other sport besides football doesn't
- 43:50Speaker 14: matter so very much psychologically to the team and both
- 43:53Speaker 14: their records, how a team starts. So I totally agree
- 43:57Speaker 14: with you on that. I think this particular.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Game is going to swing on Will Campbell's performance again, psychologically, too.
- 44:04Speaker 3: If he goes out there and just shows he can
- 44:06Speaker 3: hold his own. Not pancake every guy, but just shows
- 44:10Speaker 3: he can hold his own. I think the offense is
- 44:11Speaker 3: going to feel like, hey, we got a shot at this.
- 44:13Speaker 3: And the defense is going to feel like, okay, we're
- 44:14Speaker 3: not going to be on the field the whole game.
- 44:16Speaker 3: And conversely, right, if he goes up there and gets smoked, yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 3: the defense is going to get discouraged right away, and
- 44:21Speaker 3: that's going to set the tone. So connecting to what
- 44:24Speaker 3: Paul said, too, the way this game goes down, I
- 44:27Speaker 3: think no other sport matters as much as that. But
- 44:31Speaker 3: my question is this, you guys. So Christian Gonzalez gets
- 44:33Speaker 3: $ 100 million guaranteed, $ 102 million guaranteed. That means he can
- 44:39Speaker 3: go out tomorrow, let's say, and break his leg and
- 44:44Speaker 3: can't play anymore. The team has to pay him that
- 44:47Speaker 3: $ 100 million, right?
- 44:48Speaker 2: Does that come?
- 44:49Speaker 3: No.
- 44:50Speaker 4: No, it would be about 53 and change.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Okay, so then it's not fully guaranteed. It's, like, guaranteed
- 44:59Speaker 3: on contingencies and stuff like.
- 45:00Speaker 4: That, right? Right. Yep, you got it.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Okay, and do we.
- 45:04Speaker 14: Have an insurance policy to pay that, or does that literally.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Come out of the team's budget? And I have to
- 45:10Speaker 3: gain 24-7, Pat. Let's go, Pat.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that I don't know the answer to those insurance
- 45:15Speaker 4: kind of questions. Nor do I care to know. Yeah,
- 45:19Speaker 4: I believe that some of the reports said he got
- 45:22Speaker 4: 33 in a signing bonus. So that kind of stuff...
- 45:26Speaker 4: whatever the guarantee portion is that's guaranteed, regardless of what happens,
- 45:30Speaker 4: needs to be an escrow.
- 45:31Speaker 2: That I do know.
- 45:34Speaker 4: And then he gets it on the dates. But some
- 45:36Speaker 4: of the quote-unquote guarantees are his salary gets guaranteed if
- 45:41Speaker 4: he's on the roster the fifth day of a league year,
- 45:44Speaker 4: as an example. Or I think he gets $ 100, 000 in
- 45:49Speaker 4: per-game roster bonuses each year beyond this year. This year
- 45:52Speaker 4: is fully guaranteed. But starting next year, it's like 1.7
- 45:57Speaker 4: total for per-game roster bonuses. So if he misses three games,
- 46:00Speaker 4: that's $ 300, 000 he doesn't get. And obviously, they're all listed
- 46:06Speaker 4: as guarantees. But in the NFL, guarantee doesn't mean what.
- 46:12Speaker 2: You think it does.
- 46:13Speaker 4: Are we talking LTBE or NLTBE? No, that's all cap.
- 46:16Speaker 2: That's all cap stuff.
- 46:17Speaker 4: We're not doing that. No, incentives are capped. You either
- 46:20Speaker 4: make an incentive or you don't. They're just ruled ahead
- 46:24Speaker 4: of time. Right. If it's a likely to be earned incentive,
- 46:26Speaker 4: that just means you did it last year. If it's
- 46:29Speaker 4: not likely to be earned, that means you didn't do
- 46:30Speaker 4: it the year before. But that's for cap purposes. So
- 46:32Speaker 4: if it's likely, it goes on the cap that year.
- 46:34Speaker 4: If it's unlikely and you reach it, it goes on
- 46:36Speaker 4: the cap the next year.
- 46:38Speaker 2: It's all bookkeeping. That's my favorite part of covering football,
- 46:42Speaker 2: talking about contract.
- 46:42Speaker 4: You know, when I got into this, that's what I thought.
- 46:44Speaker 4: I want to do, like, contract.
- 46:45Speaker 6: That's going to be your niche?
- 46:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:47Speaker 6: The accounting?
- 46:48Speaker 2: Nonsense.
- 46:48Speaker 4: I'm a huge incentives guy. I love incentives.
- 46:52Speaker 6: Seller cap school, Paul Perillo.
- 46:53Speaker 4: Basically, he has to play in the games to get
- 46:57Speaker 4: that $ 102 million guaranteed.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:00Speaker 4: You know, he has workout bonuses that he gets, but
- 47:03Speaker 4: he's got to show up for them.
- 47:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 47:05Speaker 6: That's why the phrasing is always up to blank guaranteed.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Correct.
- 47:08Speaker 6: Or worth as much as blank.
- 47:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and only in the NFL does the word guaranteed
- 47:14Speaker 4: not mean guaranteed.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Not exactly.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Not entirely guaranteed. Frazier Minton, guaranteed.
- 47:21Speaker 2: I would look forward to killing the Bruins all year.
- 47:23Speaker 2: What do you think the impact is, though, of Gonzalez?
- 47:27Speaker 2: showing good faith, showing up to training camp, practicing, you know,
- 47:30Speaker 2: kind of being here. Does that have any kind of,
- 47:32Speaker 2: you know, now we're looking at another player wants to,
- 47:35Speaker 2: you know, I'm going to do the hold in. Does
- 47:37Speaker 2: that give the team any leverage to say? It kind
- 47:41Speaker 2: of did.
- 47:42Speaker 4: I think it kind of worked because I think they
- 47:44Speaker 4: were worried that he wasn't going to play tomorrow night.
- 47:47Speaker 7: That makes sense because all the reporting, like even up
- 47:50Speaker 7: through yesterday, was they're not close.
- 47:53Speaker 6: Talks are done.
- 47:55Speaker 4: He did miss all of the joint practices. Soft, secretive Holden.
- 48:00Speaker 2: But, yeah, I do wonder about that.
- 48:01Speaker 6: It's like quiet quitting.
- 48:02Speaker 9: That phrase.
- 48:03Speaker 2: It's like, I'm here, but I don't know.
- 48:06Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 48:06Speaker 2: We can get off of that stuff.
- 48:08Speaker 4: It's got to mean something in the room, though. It's
- 48:10Speaker 4: definitely got to mean something in the room.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I think so.
- 48:11Speaker 4: A nice little boost.
- 48:12Speaker 6: I think it was good for him, too. It was
- 48:14Speaker 6: kind of like.
- 48:14Speaker 4: Yeah. I think he handled himself well. as well as
- 48:18Speaker 4: you could possibly expect a guy to handle himself.
- 48:20Speaker 2: I agree.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I think he expressed frustration. He didn't, like, deny that.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Yep.
- 48:24Speaker 4: I think he was professional. He didn't do his negotiating
- 48:27Speaker 4: in the media. Nope.
- 48:29Speaker 6: He was showing up to community events. Or on social media.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Yeah. All right, let's go to where the game is.
- 48:36Speaker 4: Boots on the ground.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Boots on the ground in Seattle. Hey, Anthony. I know.
- 48:39Speaker 16: It's pretty exciting. Alex, thank you for making time for us.
- 48:47Speaker 6: Only for you, Anthony. Big week for you.
- 48:50Speaker 16: Jack, welcome. I think this will be my first time
- 48:53Speaker 16: interacting with Jack, so welcome.
- 48:55Speaker 4: Appreciate it, brother.
- 48:56Speaker 16: So, hey, listen, you guys know me. I'm usually Mr.
- 48:58Speaker 16: Happy-Go-Lucky and all that stuff, and I'm sure I'm still
- 49:02Speaker 16: having some feelings right now, and obviously I'm going to
- 49:05Speaker 16: the game tomorrow, and for sure if we find a
- 49:07Speaker 16: way to win this one, I'm not even going to
- 49:09Speaker 16: be thinking about this. But today, today I'm still mad.
- 49:12Speaker 16: I'm sorry, but it's like, <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 49:20Speaker 16: been a given. And the fact that I had to
- 49:22Speaker 16: have a legitimate fear that Christian Gonzalez might not be
- 49:27Speaker 16: in this team's long-term plans is ridiculous to me. If
- 49:30Speaker 16: we're drafting develop and you draft a guy and he
- 49:32Speaker 16: develops into one of the very best there is, I mean,
- 49:36Speaker 16: these ones are no-brainers. And the fact that it took
- 49:39Speaker 16: this long, there was a certain time threshold where I
- 49:41Speaker 16: felt like, okay, if it lingers a little bit, that's fine.
- 49:44Speaker 16: But it got done. But they passed that time threshold,
- 49:47Speaker 16: and they got it done at the 11th hour. Mentally,
- 49:49Speaker 16: I was already, I'm like, man, F these guys, man.
- 49:52Speaker 16: He's going to play, start the season without himself. Yeah,
- 49:54Speaker 16: I woke up tomorrow, I saw the news, but it
- 49:56Speaker 16: still was like, nah, F you guys, man. You guys,
- 49:58Speaker 16: I'm still mad, you.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Know what I mean? Sorry, stay mad. Yeah, one more day.
- 50:02Speaker 2: and just invest in it.
- 50:04Speaker 16: It would be a couple of, obviously it's just feeling
- 50:07Speaker 16: the deal got done and it's going to be the past.
- 50:09Speaker 16: But just today, I just wanted to rant to my
- 50:12Speaker 16: guys and gal and let you guys know I'm still
- 50:15Speaker 16: mad at the team and I'm glad the deal got done.
- 50:17Speaker 2: And that's a Felger and Mads team. There you go. Thanks, Anthony.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Enjoy the game tomorrow night.
- 50:22Speaker 6: Thanks, Anthony.
- 50:22Speaker 2: I think you should take one maybe past defense on
- 50:25Speaker 2: Smith and Jigba. All right, he's back. He'll be right
- 50:28Speaker 2: back on board.
- 50:29Speaker 4: You know me. I go the other way on that.
- 50:33Speaker 4: Let's see what happens if he gives up a pass
- 50:35Speaker 4: or two.
- 50:36Speaker 2: We gave him too much money.
- 50:38Speaker 4: We never gave him this money.
- 50:39Speaker 9: Maybe if he didn't threaten all year, he'd be showing
- 50:42Speaker 9: up for a joint practice.
- 50:43Speaker 6: Well, that would be pretty on brand for the Twitter
- 50:46Speaker 6: fan base.
- 50:47Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. That's why we don't use it anymore. I
- 50:50Speaker 4: get Anthony's frustration. Why did it have to take so long?
- 50:53Speaker 4: I don't really care about that right now. I'm just done.
- 50:56Speaker 4: My national nightmare is over. I feel so good about it, though.
- 50:59Speaker 4: It's over. That's the best part about it. All right,
- 51:01Speaker 4: we got Pablo from New York. Hey, Pablo, what's going on? Hey,
- 51:05Speaker 4: how's it going?
- 51:06Speaker 2: All right. Um, it's Pavlov, but Pablo works. All right.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Okay. Cause I was a little worried that it was
- 51:11Speaker 4: Pablo Torre. And I was going to say, I'm sorry,
- 51:14Speaker 4: I'm not available.
- 51:15Speaker 2: The look of confusion on Matt Murrell's face as he
- 51:18Speaker 2: like said that, I think, what? How could that be?
- 51:23Speaker 2: No worries at all. I'll be quick and take it
- 51:25Speaker 2: off the air.
- 51:26Speaker 13: I just wanted to ask you guys if you could
- 51:28Speaker 13: compare the 2014 cornerbacks with the current roster. Both are
- 51:33Speaker 13: super talented. Obviously, Browner is very different than what we
- 51:37Speaker 13: have now with Marcus Jones, but still kind of like
- 51:40Speaker 13: specialized player plus a really strong safety group. I just
- 51:43Speaker 13: wanted to hear your comparisons from their preseason and the
- 51:47Speaker 13: current preseason that happened.
- 51:48Speaker 4: I think this group is a lot better.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Interesting. 2014.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, Darrell Rivas is in a class by himself.
- 51:56Speaker 4: He's a tremendous player, Hall of Fame player. Even though
- 51:59Speaker 4: he was sort of winding down in 2004, he was
- 52:02Speaker 4: still elite. Brandon Browner was fine. He was fine. Like,
- 52:07Speaker 4: nothing more, nothing less. No better or worse than Carlton Davis.
- 52:12Speaker 4: And Marcus Jones is vastly superior to Kyle Errington. Yeah,
- 52:16Speaker 4: that's no doubt. I think this group is better.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say so too. I mean, I.
- 52:22Speaker 4: I'd do that good without having to look it up.
- 52:25Speaker 4: Now he's going to tell me about all the guys
- 52:27Speaker 4: that played that I don't remember.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Oh, God. No, I think you're pretty dead on.
- 52:32Speaker 4: It was Arrington was the third guy, was he not?
- 52:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and he was real streaky, too.
- 52:37Speaker 4: Uh, it was, was a perfectly fine player. I think
- 52:40Speaker 4: Marcus Jones last year anyway, it was much better.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:44Speaker 8: Paul, when you started pulling up specific plays out of
- 52:46Speaker 8: your brain from before I was born, I stopped.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Well, I do think that trivia skills yet. No, I,
- 52:51Speaker 2: the big.
- 52:52Speaker 4: Guy was a Chris Matthews, 13 for the Seahawks. He, uh,
- 52:56Speaker 4: he high topped, uh, he high topped Arrington in that
- 52:59Speaker 4: game a few times. And that's why Malcolm Butler ended
- 53:02Speaker 4: up coming in.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Is that what you're kind of talking about? Great.
- 53:05Speaker 4: It's great.
- 53:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:07Speaker 2: That was a great game. That was a new guy.
- 53:10Speaker 4: It was a Super Bowl. It wasn't like a random game,
- 53:13Speaker 4: which I could also do if you need me to.
- 53:16Speaker 2: I think the safety position is kind of interesting to analyze, too.
- 53:20Speaker 2: You had Devin McCourty kind of in his prime on
- 53:22Speaker 2: the back end. You had Patrick Chung really solidifying himself
- 53:27Speaker 2: as that strong safety and then do. So you really
- 53:30Speaker 2: had three guys that were at that point. I mean,
- 53:32Speaker 2: I think probably better was like second year 14 was
- 53:34Speaker 2: probably a better set of safety, but maybe a little
- 53:36Speaker 2: bit better. I mean, I love the potential of Craig Woodson.
- 53:38Speaker 2: I think, um, you know, I think he's really good.
- 53:41Speaker 6: It's like the youth and the promise of it.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, and Bayard, maybe he's somewhere in the
- 53:46Speaker 2: vicinity of Devin McCourty too, but you know, it's a
- 53:49Speaker 2: little different defense. I'm interested to see how they use him.
- 53:52Speaker 2: If he's playing down in the box a little bit too.
- 53:55Speaker 4: Um, Let's grab one more call, though. Tim's out in Phoenix. Hey, Tim.
- 54:00Speaker 6: Hey, guys.
- 54:00Speaker 15: What's going on? And Alex.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Hey. Hey.
- 54:05Speaker 15: Real quick, a shout-out to all the professionals out there
- 54:07Speaker 15: in the U.S. Navy doing their thing. Wish I was
- 54:10Speaker 15: still doing it. On the depth issue, though, I wanted
- 54:13Speaker 15: to say I've been on three basic types of teams,
- 54:16Speaker 15: one where I was the only one that knew what
- 54:17Speaker 15: was going on, and they had to move me from
- 54:20Speaker 15: corner to safety just so I could see everything. Two,
- 54:23Speaker 15: where everybody knew what was going on and we could
- 54:24Speaker 15: really spin the dial and we didn't have to worry
- 54:26Speaker 15: about anything. And the third is when you have one
- 54:29Speaker 15: or two guys that are the weak link. Everybody on
- 54:31Speaker 15: the field knows who they are. The coaches know who
- 54:34Speaker 15: they are. The people on the stands that are paying
- 54:36Speaker 15: attention know who they are. When that happens, you adjust accordingly.
- 54:39Speaker 15: The coaches call plays accordingly. Everybody out on the field
- 54:43Speaker 15: is out there to support each other. So if we
- 54:45Speaker 15: get an injury or two, I'm not too worried. But
- 54:47Speaker 15: if the whole team gets injured, you're looking at what
- 54:49Speaker 15: we saw in preseason. I don't think that's likely.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:54Speaker 4: Thanks, Tim. Yeah, I mean, in theory, I would agree
- 54:56Speaker 4: with that. I would need to know more information, like
- 54:58Speaker 4: who were the one or two injuries that they get.
- 55:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:01Speaker 4: I think that would very greatly, you know, like Travion
- 55:05Speaker 4: Henderson's out tonight, and I don't think that's ideal, but
- 55:09Speaker 4: I don't think that's really going to impact the game
- 55:12Speaker 4: all that much.
- 55:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 55:13Speaker 4: You know, Drake May goes down, I have a different opinion.
- 55:16Speaker 4: You know, you lose.
- 55:22Speaker 4: Milton Williams, that has an impact on the game to me.
- 55:26Speaker 4: You lose Christian Gonzalez, that has an impact on the
- 55:28Speaker 4: game to me.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Hunter Henry.
- 55:30Speaker 4: You know, Hunter Henry might be in that category. I
- 55:32Speaker 4: think you can work around Hunter Henry because I think
- 55:34Speaker 4: you have some depth at wide receiver and you just
- 55:36Speaker 4: kind of take the tight end out and use four
- 55:39Speaker 4: wide and sort of go that way. But yeah, I mean,
- 55:43Speaker 4: within reason, I would agree with Tim, but there's a handful,
- 55:47Speaker 4: I would say maybe a half dozen players. Robert Spillane,
- 55:49Speaker 4: to me, would be a really tough guy to just
- 55:52Speaker 4: Work around.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:53Speaker 4: You know, they don't have a lot of guys to
- 55:56Speaker 4: fill in. And they're already thin on the edge.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Real quick, before we take a break, Paul, I want
- 56:02Speaker 2: to talk about the tight end position a little bit
- 56:03Speaker 2: just with Hunter Henry.
- 56:04Speaker 4: And, you know, what do we expect.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Behind him? Because, you know, we saw plenty of Eli
- 56:09Speaker 2: Raritan kind of working with him. I think Eli Raritan
- 56:11Speaker 2: is going to get some snaps. But, you know, the
- 56:13Speaker 2: two guys that they brought in, Cameron Latu, who's played,
- 56:16Speaker 2: you know, played one year, but 103 offensive snaps, played,
- 56:19Speaker 2: you know, 257 snaps.
- 56:21Speaker 4: Special team snaps last year.
- 56:23Speaker 2: And then Shane Zylstra, you know, who's a little bit
- 56:25Speaker 2: of a four-year vet, he's played a bunch of snaps.
- 56:28Speaker 2: He's got, you know, 18 career catches, nothing. But, you know,
- 56:30Speaker 2: do one of those guys kind of enter the mix?
- 56:33Speaker 2: Or do you kind of throw Raritan in the fire
- 56:35Speaker 2: and see what he's got?
- 56:36Speaker 8: I think with the amount of snaps he got in
- 56:39Speaker 8: the preseason, I would lean Raritan, just with how involved
- 56:42Speaker 8: he was. And both times I showed up to practice,
- 56:45Speaker 8: he was involved. The preseason games took a lot of snaps.
- 56:47Speaker 8: I think it seemed like they were certainly molding him
- 56:49Speaker 8: to play a role on the team this year.
- 56:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:51Speaker 4: I'm just not expecting them to run the ball overly
- 56:54Speaker 4: effectively in week one, so I don't really see the
- 56:57Speaker 4: need for one of those extra guys. You know, if
- 57:00Speaker 4: it's Tanner Arkin or, you know, Latu, I don't. I
- 57:04Speaker 4: don't know how to suss it all out. Raritan, I think,
- 57:06Speaker 4: will get a handful of snaps, and maybe they can
- 57:08Speaker 4: dial something up and sneak him out. I think they
- 57:10Speaker 4: did that in the Super Bowl to Austin Hooper, and unfortunately,
- 57:13Speaker 4: Drake May overthrew him. He was wide open on the
- 57:16Speaker 4: near sideline.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:19Speaker 4: I want to say in the third quarter, just overshot him.
- 57:22Speaker 4: So that's a play that I think if you can
- 57:24Speaker 4: dial up for Reardon and make the play, he has
- 57:26Speaker 4: the athleticism to put a chunk play together.
- 57:30Speaker 8: Paul, are your concerns with the run game a O-line thing?
- 57:33Speaker 8: Is it a Seahawks D-line thing? Is it a week
- 57:35Speaker 8: one thing? Because obviously offense is the toughest thing to
- 57:37Speaker 8: get going, right? When you see week one, week two,
- 57:39Speaker 8: week three, it's never clean.
- 57:40Speaker 4: I don't think the Patriots run the ball all that
- 57:42Speaker 4: effectively in their best days, number one. But I don't
- 57:45Speaker 4: think they've run it at all this summer. So it's
- 57:47Speaker 4: partly what we've seen in training camp. and mostly it's
- 57:52Speaker 4: what I see from Seattle. I think they're really tough
- 57:54Speaker 4: to run the ball against. Where you miss Henderson, I think,
- 57:58Speaker 4: in that is maybe you won't consistently open up a
- 58:01Speaker 4: lot of holes, but on that time that you do
- 58:03Speaker 4: find a crease, does Henderson give you 25 yards, whereas
- 58:08Speaker 4: maybe Stevenson's giving you 10 on a similar kind of play?
- 58:13Speaker 4: I think there's an argument to be made. You lose
- 58:14Speaker 4: some of that explosiveness, but I don't expect them to
- 58:19Speaker 4: I mean, if they can, it would be a huge
- 58:22Speaker 4: boost for the offense. But I'm not expecting them to
- 58:25Speaker 4: run the ball 25 times for like 125 yards. I'd
- 58:28Speaker 4: be very surprised if that happened. Like forgetting Drake May scrambles.
- 58:32Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 58:32Speaker 2: All right, we're going to take a quick break here.

- 1:07:14Speaker 4: or 12 times this season. But you know who I'm
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: really excited to watch? This is my fresh take. Ramondre Stevenson.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: I know that's going to come as a shock to
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: a lot of our loyal listeners here on Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: My affection for Ramondre Stevenson. But it's not just what
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: he does as a blocker and a guy who can
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: pick up the blitz. I think he's going to be
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: a weapon. And this is the fresh part of the take, Mike.
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: He's going to be a weapon in the passing game.
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: I saw a lot of stuff that Josh Martinez did
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: with him, sort of down the field, high red zone stuff.
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: Don't be surprised if you see Drake May looking at
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: Ramondre Stevenson down the field on some of these little
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: angle routes, and he has great hands. Yes, I know.
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: I know it's a shocking development. I am high on
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: Ramondre Stevenson in 2026.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: It's a great one, Paul.
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: I mean, I thought he was... Take that one to
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: the bank.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Maybe a quiet camp, but a good, solid camp.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: You're welcome, fantasy owners.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: And, of course, thank you to Legal Seafood, who.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Let's face it, it's the best seafood around, and I'm
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: looking forward to going back there again soon.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: Alex and I are in agreement on the chowder, for sure.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, we got chowder in our whole thing, and
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: I found out that I can get my baked seafood
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: casserole again if I ask for it.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: So things are looking up for me. A little off-menu
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: item there. It's kind of like In-N-Out. A little bit, yeah.
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: Animal style. But I don't know.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: They had a delicious thing on the menu that I
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: thought was wonderful.
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: It's a hard menu to— limit down to what you're
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: going to get you can go the sushi avenue you
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: can go like a more entree get a couple apps.
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: Any way you go you know it's going to be
- 1:08:41Speaker 8: fresh now i'm starving sorry jack speaking of fantasy though
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: i think it is funny everyone wants henderson to be
- 1:08:47Speaker 8: that kind of pass catching back role and really stevenson's
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: the guy yeah well that's and that's what i was
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: thinking as paul said you know and if they did
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: have to get into a little bit of a rotation
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: i don't think reminder stevenson's going wire to wire with
- 1:08:58Speaker 8: every single carry but you know, he gives you that
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: flexibility that maybe you do just save them for third
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: down because you know, you can trust him more than
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: anybody else on the roster, but third down, we don't
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: necessarily need to give them like let's two yards in
- 1:09:10Speaker 8: a cloud of dust.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: And get seven Seahawks piled on top of him.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Maybe that's Hassan Haskins' job, and you save Ramondre for
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: some of those critical third downs.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: Fantasy owners also want Henderson to be like Jameer Gibbs
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: so bad. I do, too.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: I wouldn't be opposed to that. I'm not going to lie.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie, dawg.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: If that happened, I wouldn't be upset about it.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: That'd be great.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: Trying to will into existence on message boards.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: I don't know, man. That's what's... crazy is you know
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: we obviously don't often we don't see practice during the
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: season but we were all out there at practice and
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: you know everybody saw him kind of stumble and you're
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: like oh you know and you never know all of
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: a sudden now that's you know something that they're going
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: to have to work around and deal with maybe there's
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: an update but we saw him walking through the locker
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: room all week he did he was not going out
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: to practice seemed like he was behind everybody so We'll
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: see how it all comes together. But there's a chance.
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: You know, they ruled Ben Brown out because he didn't
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: make the trip, and they didn't do that with Henderson.
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: So I would say until we find out, which is today,
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: 4 o'clock today, you know, a couple more hours.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I'd expect Haskins or Corey Kiner. Maybe more Haskins
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: just because he's been here a little bit longer. But
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: we'll see. So, guys, another little thing here just to
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: kick off our second hour. And please give us a call, 855-PATS-500.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Shoot us an email. I haven't gotten any emails today.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: It's a little sad.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: Love a game. Paul loves games.
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: You want to challenge us to a game? I do
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: love me some games.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Send us some trivia. Patriots history. Some of us go
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: way back, so we know that.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: But I did just some counting.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: And, you know, it's something I've been hitting on, guys,
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: is just that special teams can be a little different,
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: a lot different for the Patriots in this game. I
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: looked at, you know, their return and kick units during
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: the Super Bowl and the number of new faces that
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: will exist in this game. On the kickoff team will
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: be six. On the punt team will be eight. On
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: the kickoff return team will be nine. On the punt
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: return team, it'll be eight. And, of course, your new
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: punter is going to be Mitch Wischnowski, who was just
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: added to the practice squad and has never punted for
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: the Patriots before. I don't know if these numbers are
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: significant or if that's just how it goes every year.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: I am used to looking out and seeing, like, Matthew
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Slater out there, Brennan School, or somebody that, like, I
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: know can do the job. We heard from Jeremy Springer
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: a couple days ago.
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: He said, you know, we're not going to tell you
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: who the returners are.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: We're not going to tell you who.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: The gunners are.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: So it's just a lot of uncertainty, and I look
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: at it in two ways. Of course, Paul, your other guy,
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Marcus Jones, I mean, that's a huge weapon for the Patriots,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: so it's going to have a bunch of new guys
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: blocking for him. But the other guy that you mentioned,
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Rashid Shahid, who's a great kickoff returner as well, you're
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: going to have a lot of new faces in this
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: third phase that often gets overlooked, but I just think
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: it's an area that, A lot of times games like this,
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: especially when there's a lot of mistakes early on, it
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: can be, it can make a big difference. And you're
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: not going to be relying on maybe in some cases,
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: guys who are either rookies or just showed up like
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: last Sunday.
- 1:11:49Speaker 8: Now all it takes is one, all it takes is
- 1:11:52Speaker 8: one play for that third phase of the game to
- 1:11:54Speaker 8: really have an impact. And it's taken for granted so much,
- 1:11:56Speaker 8: you know, that, your casual pun, your casual kickoff. They
- 1:11:59Speaker 8: happen so often and usually have such a routine of
- 1:12:02Speaker 8: a fair catch, kicking out of the end zone, something
- 1:12:04Speaker 8: of that nature. All it takes is one to pop
- 1:12:06Speaker 8: for you to realize how important that is and how
- 1:12:08Speaker 8: much you take it for granted and take those guys
- 1:12:10Speaker 8: playing those roles for granted.
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: You might have never heard on that number.
- 1:12:14Speaker 8: You know, the number 52 guy on the roster, then
- 1:12:16Speaker 8: all of a sudden he doesn't stay in his kickoff
- 1:12:17Speaker 8: lane and it's going the other way, you know, and
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: all of a sudden you're real familiar with who that
- 1:12:21Speaker 8: player is.
- 1:12:22Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: So I think that's where a very underappreciated part of
- 1:12:25Speaker 8: the game that can have a serious impact.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: If someone falls asleep for even one snap, no naps,
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: no naps.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: But I think there's gonna be a couple of times
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: tomorrow night where we're like, who, who was that for
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: the Patriots?
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: Like they have probably somewhere around eight or 10 guys
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: that are going to be active that we haven't really seen.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:43Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: So I just won't know what numbers they are.
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: That's the underrated part about the depth issue.
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: It's like, yeah, this would stink if someone went down,
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: but also what does it look like on special teams
- 1:12:54Speaker 7: when those depth guys are filling out that phase?
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Now you're getting to a whole level. It's new, and
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: then you get injuries, and it's further new. It's just
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: some definite uncertainty. you know, at the end of the day,
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: they got to shut down Rashid Shaheed. I mean, I
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: think I'd like to.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: Know the numbers on those. I mean, I don't know
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: them and I'm going to take your numbers. I'll take those,
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: take your word for it. Cause I don't even, I,
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: if you asked me to tell you who the guy,
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: I had to go back and like, look at the
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: film and the lineup who's there. And you know what?
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: It's like the Chad Mumas of the world. And, You know,
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: guys who just aren't here. I just would wonder how
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: many of those guys change every year. Yeah, and that's
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: what I tried to explain that with. My guess is
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: at least a half dozen change every year. I mean,
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: nine on the kickoff return. That seems significant.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: Nine guys.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: Like, Brendan Schooler is a good point. Like, you've always
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: had a guy that you know, okay, Slater's going to
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: be out there. Izzo's going to be out there. Wiggum's
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: going to be out there. Schooler's going to be out there.
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: And you don't have Schooler for the first four games.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: But the rest of it, my guess is that that
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: changes dramatically from year to year. I would think so.
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: I mean, that's... I don't have anything to base that on.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: That's the depth, and that goes to the injury point.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: If they do get tested on a spot that we
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: are not very deep at, you just hope that that
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: player uses that opportunity to emerge as a player who
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: might be an actual contributor.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: And now instead of looking at big question mark on the.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Depth chart, you're saying, all right, well, this guy played
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: last year, and he's going to come back, and maybe
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: he can build off of this experience. So that's the
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: silver lining you try to look at, but there's no
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: question certain positions they get hurt, there's going to be
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: a significant drop-off.
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: On the flip side of that, that's why I'm so
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: excited for tomorrow.
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: I mean, we spent the past month just talking about, okay,
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: who's going to step up, fill a role, and we
- 1:14:26Speaker 8: finally get to just see the guys who are in
- 1:14:27Speaker 8: those roles.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: I mean, I.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Cannot contain myself.
- 1:14:31Speaker 8: It's going to be a beautiful thing to see those
- 1:14:34Speaker 8: starters trot out on the field and almost have a reminder, oh, wait,
- 1:14:37Speaker 8: he's real.
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: He's on the team. I mean, see him in uniform,
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: see him run on the field and make some plays.
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: I'm fired up. Well, that for me has got to
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: be A.J.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Brown.
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: I just think fans.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: I was saying in the locker room, this guy's a stud.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: I'm excited to watch him play. I mean, we haven't,
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: you know, we've seen him in joint practices a little bit.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: That's as competitive as it got. But, you know, when
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: you look back at the offseason and you kind of
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: look at moves that you love and moves that maybe
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: you wish that they did, the A.J.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: Brown move.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Coupled with the Romeo Dobbs move like that to me was,
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: you know, just huge for Drake trying to continue to
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: get better and, you know, change the offense, not be settled. Well, he's,
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: you know, Paul's made this point. He was a runner
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: up of MVP last year. Let's just run it back.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: He can do it with, no, they took real steps.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: And these are, you know, some things that they've been
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: talking about for a while surrounding the quarterback with that
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: talent while he's on the rookie deal. So I just,
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: that's to me, what I'm most excited about is getting
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: to see AJ Brown and this guy, cause it's, it
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: looks like he's going to deliver on what, what he
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: can do.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: I would agree. I think the thing to be most
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: excited about is I think the offense has a chance
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: to be really special with those added weapons and Drake
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: May being that much more comfortable in his second year
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: with McDaniel. So, yeah, I think that's the thing that
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: I have the most confidence in heading into the opener.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: There's a lot of uncertainty on special teams.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: Defense.
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: Do that on your own time. And I, and I
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: do have some.
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: He looked at the TV the whole time.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: I will not participate in this part of the show.
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: I do have some concerns about the defense, especially on
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: the edges. I think there's, there's some issues there, but
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: I think the offense, if they're going to win tomorrow night,
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: I think the offense is going to have to perform well.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: I don't see them winning a low scoring game.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I kind of was thinking in this mind, I'll
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: rely on you to tell me if this is a
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: good comparison or not. Like I felt like in 09,
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: they were out of edge rushers. I mean, you had,
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: you brought like Tully Banta came back. Remember they like
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: traded late for Derek Burgess and brought him in like
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: maybe in the summer. Like I just, I, that was
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: the only season I could go back to where it
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: felt like they're just, they're really thin there right now.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: I'm hoping Draymond Jones turns out to be a solid,
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: you know, three down player who can, Get at the
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: quarterback with stunts. I'm not looking for him. I don't
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: think he's the guy that's going to blow by anybody
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: off the edge. And then you're just kind of hoping
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: you're crossing your fingers. And Mike Vrabel's been asked about
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: this with Gabe Ackes and Q Hutchins. Like, can these
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: guys step in and contribute anything? Or is it going
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: to be, you know, we talked about Chandler Jones a
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: little bit. Remember that year of 2014, it was Chandler
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Jones and Rob Nikovich played the whole season. Like, I
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: think they set a record for how many snaps they
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: both played. That was great. I think it's hard to
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: expect that, though. maybe the biggest unknown is Elijah Ponder
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: against the run. He's kind of a pass down player
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: last year. Is he going to be able to come
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: in against this wide zone and it's such a critical
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: part of the game and be able to, you know,
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: set the edge.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: It's a, it's a big concern.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: Um, they, and I thought they took advantage of, uh,
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: Caleb on chase on a little bit last year and they,
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: they attacked him on the edges. I look at Ponder
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: as that kind of a player and Draymond Jones is
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: more of a, I think he's more of a run
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: force kind of a guy. Yeah. So, The depth on
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: the outside is definitely an issue, but it is what
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: it is. I mean, they're not going to have Harold
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: Landry for at least the first four weeks. I don't
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: know what you're going to reasonably expect from Gabe Actis yet.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: I haven't liked what I've seen during the course of
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: the summer from him. Except in the locker room. I
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: think in the locker room, he looks the part in
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: the locker room for sure.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: Is this another guy?
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: This is another one?
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: Him and A.J. Brown, I think, I mean, well, he's just,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: I haven't been up close with Actis. This is tight.
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: But yeah, he's... I've been up close and this is
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: Mike's type.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: He looks the part.
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: He looks the part, no question. I mean, the guy
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: looks like he's, you know, chiseled.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: Same with A.J. Brown.
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: I mean, I.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: It's like A.J. Brown's in incredible shape. Like his waist
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: is like this. His shoulders are like this.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: Deuce likes a man that's just like solid as a
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: freaking rock.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: I do. Solid as a rock.
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: Thick but solid.
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: You know, 100% muscle. I don't even know what.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: We're doing anymore.
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: Like a pitbull.
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: Those dogs are almost like a statue.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: I know. It always inevitably comes back to, could you
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: imagine having to tackle that guy?
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: That's always where the conversation goes to. You see the guy.
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: Not so much with Ackis.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: Imagine getting tackled by, like, that guy coming at you.
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: Do you guys, like, think about this?
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: I've heard that, like, men, like, they see other men
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: out in public and you're just sizing each other up constantly.
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: Like, if I have to fight him, can I beat him?
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: Like, dog sniffing butts, for sure.
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: But, like, here with football players, it's like.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: How badly would they hurt with me?
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Not in, like, an average setting. I mean, I will
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: say from, like, my.
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: Maybe this is a young man's mentality.
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: Maybe when I was younger. When I was playing sports.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: Like, when I was playing hockey and I would show
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: up at, like, a camp or a thing where there's
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: a bunch of people trying out for something.
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: I would have the itch to... Yeah, I know exactly.
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: He just gave me the practical example. But, like, walking down.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Yes, Alex. Do I walk through the halls of Gillette Stadium?
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Do I kick his ass? I kick his ass. He'd
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: probably kick my ass. Only Fred does that.
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: Only Fred does that.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Fred, I miss Freddie here today.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: I wonder what they're doing.
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: Out in Seattle.
- 1:19:35Speaker 16: I know.
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: I got to give them some good newsletter homework for
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: in Seattle.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: Can you imagine how excited Fred is right now with
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: the game tomorrow? He's just like probably bouncing off his hotel.
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: He's probably going to get a steak tonight. You know, yeah,
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: he's living large.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: Probably had a tennis lesson.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Tennis lesson.
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: Pickleball. He's probably watching the U.S.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: Open.
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: Coco was really good last night.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: She was on Fuego. I did actually watch a little
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: Coco golf. She was really good.
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: Give me Shelton over Alcaraz. And Fuego.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: He just said something that's kind of silly. What did
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: you say?
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: I'm just going to let it go. Oh, you don't
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: like that?
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: Would you say Alcaraz?
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: Shelton over Alcaraz. I don't like anybody over Alcaraz.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's cool.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: I want to see the Americans just put their foot down.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Maybe Yannick Sinner. Sinner or Alcaraz. Sinner's not playing in
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: this tournament. So I thought Alcaraz was more.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Of a play guy.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: I think he's everything. The freak of an athlete.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Oh, Alcaraz? He's won all of them.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: He might be the youngest ever to win all four majors.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: Well, there you go.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Another sport that I don't follow quite close.
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: Enough, I guess.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: I feel really good about tomorrow.
- 1:20:46Speaker 8: I don't know what it is. Not only that, I
- 1:20:49Speaker 8: feel great about that. But I feel really good about
- 1:20:52Speaker 8: the Patriots tomorrow. I've got to put that out there.
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: I don't know what it is. It's been growing the
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: past couple of days.
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: I understand that Paul might not share that same excitement
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: with me, but there's a couple of factors.
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: I feel really good about the Gonzalez development. I think
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Alex hit it in the first hour of the show.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: I think that's good for morale. I just want to
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: get it going, you know, regardless of what the result is.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: You know, like we said at the top, you saw
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: last year they had a slow start out of the gate.
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: But just to get it going, to know what this
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: team's dynamic is, what their kind of personality is, that
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: takes some time to develop. But once you start getting, like,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: to your point, real information, you know, real, all right, well,
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: they were terrible at this. They were really good at this.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: you know, cause I think the preseason can be a
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: liar based on what you saw in practice and joint practices.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: And then what's being reported, just scrubs out there, not scrubs, sorry,
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: but you know, backups basically in the preseason, you know,
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: it's like, I don't know, this isn't the 2026 Patriots
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: out here. This isn't, you know, especially this year where
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: you didn't have any starters playing. So it's, you know,
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: you have no idea really what to expect. You got
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: a glimpse of it maybe in joint practices and you
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: got a sense that they look like they were competitive with,
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: with a good team and they punched back and, took
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: some hits, and it looks like they'll be able to
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: hang in there, but who are they going to be?
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: They have to tell us.
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: I really like the spot, too.
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: When you think about that offensive line, Will Campbell, again,
- 1:22:12Speaker 8: not to go too deep into it, you could tell
- 1:22:15Speaker 8: that knee was bothering him.
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: He just didn't trust it.
- 1:22:17Speaker 8: A lot of the fundamental stuff, when I watch from
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: the tight, he didn't trust it at all. The healthiest
- 1:22:22Speaker 8: you're going to be generally. is the week one game,
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: right now. So to see this Patriots team, specifically up front,
- 1:22:30Speaker 8: trot out there, the healthiest they will be, the best
- 1:22:32Speaker 8: they'll feel all year long, with this kind of prolonged
- 1:22:35Speaker 8: period between the camp and this first game as well,
- 1:22:40Speaker 8: I just like the spot.
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: The coordinator stuff we talked about, and you know who
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: else likes it? Vegas.
- 1:22:45Speaker 8: I don't want to go too deep in the weeds here,
- 1:22:47Speaker 8: but when you see the Patriots, plus three and a half,
- 1:22:50Speaker 8: on the road, a banner night in Seattle, They usually say, what,
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: home field advantage buys you three points.
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: So you're telling me. Is that what they say? I
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: think that's the old cliche.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: You're touching on a running joke with the PU crew.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: But it's just, they seem to like the pass as well.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: They agree with me here, Paul.
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: It's like we have Fred.
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: Two teams that played in the Super Bowl, one of
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: them spared by three and a half points. And somehow
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: that's like miraculous for the visiting team.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: I think that the way. Like both of these teams
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: are supposed to be really good, guys.
- 1:23:19Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: Like, I don't know, like, would anyone try to convince
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: everybody that the Patriots are this massive underdog again? They're not.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: They did that last year. That's over. That's done. That's gone.
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: They're not underdogs anymore.
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: You don't think it's their Super Bowl performance last year
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: that is giving people these lingering beliefs?
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: That's probably why it's a three and a half point spread.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: I think that's a pretty sizable spread for two teams
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: that played in the Super Bowl last year. It's a
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: bigger spread than it was in the Super Bowl. On
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: your typical.
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: Technically, it's zero because the home team gets.
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: Again, we know that that's not true. You know it.
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: Just turn the pot.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: Don't you do it. Outside of the playoffs, did they
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: have a bad? I mean, I know they were undefeated
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: on the road last year, but is there anything to
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: that mentality from last year? Because I thought they had
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: some pretty cool performances on the road. The comeback against
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: the Ravens, really their only kind of comeback last year.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: I just don't put that much credence into that.
- 1:24:13Speaker 10: One, though.
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: Everything went wrong for the Ravens in the second half.
- 1:24:17Speaker 6: I just felt like the Patriots were so lucky.
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: Well, people... Sometimes we remember it like Lamar Jackson didn't play.
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: Like he didn't get hurt in the first half. And
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: like Derrick Henry really did run the ball in the
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: fourth quarter. I get what you're saying, Alex.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: I'm just saying, I guess my question is more, is
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: there anything to be said from that team and their
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: ability to win on the road? And is that something
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: that can carry over?
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: Or is that just... I don't think it can carry over.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: A unique one-off kind of thing. I know they play
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: bad teams on the road, too, but I just don't
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: think they really, and maybe I'm wrong, but in my mind,
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: I don't really remember them laying an egg on the
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: road last year. They were always, especially with that first
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: game in Miami, which Braybill said was kind of, he
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: felt like a turning point where they showed we know
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: how hard it is to play in Miami.
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: But I would just say they laid two eggs all
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: year in Vegas and Pittsburgh. I mean, every other game,
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: I mean, some games were better than others, don't get
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: me wrong, but every other game they played reasonably well.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, just remarkable to go 9-0 on the road than
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: to win two playoff games on the road. Is there
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: something there that they can bake back in that they're
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: going to be a tough out on the road?
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: I mean, it changes, too. We talk about the NFL
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: in general. It seems like teams are better on the
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: road these days, too. They won one playoff game on
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: the road.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: Against Jared Stidham. Again, these things just kind of get
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: lost in history.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: Like, oh, yeah.
- 1:25:41Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: All the good teams that we played didn't really have
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: their quarterbacks. Joe Burrow didn't play. Lamar Jackson didn't play
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: the last three quarters. Bo Nix didn't play.
- 1:25:52Speaker 6: Did they have Baker?
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: They had a full Baker.
- 1:25:56Speaker 7: That felt like a turning point game.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: He was hurt in that game, too.
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: That felt like the first after the Bills game.
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: And all the receivers were hurt in that game.
- 1:26:03Speaker 16: Yeah, right.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: I think what Mike said at the first sentence I say,
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: I would agree with 1,000%. It's very impressive that a
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: team went 9-0 on the road. I don't care who
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: you play. To win every game on the road is
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: an amazing accomplishment. I do think that they had a
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: mentality that they started in Buffalo. They say Miami. I
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: think it started in the Buffalo game. I think they
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: really circled the wagons in that game.
- 1:26:31Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: And Mike embraced the challenge of that national television. And
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: I think they galvanized and I think it did work.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: I don't think it carries over. This team will have
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: to establish that they were capable of doing the same stuff.
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: And it's the same thing as the schedule in general.
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: It went 14 and three. And how many people have
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: said the cliche of, I think they can be better
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: this year, but maybe not in the record. Well, I
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: think there might be a better road team this year
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: and maybe not go 9-0. Well, they can't go 9-0.
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: You know, who knows? Maybe they have chances to win
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: games in the playoffs on the road that they didn't
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: last year. But they might lose a game or two,
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: but even be better on the road than they were
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: last year because all those things that Alex and I
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: just pointed out, personnel-wise, for other teams, might not exist.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: You know, and they might have more impressive performances on
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: the road this year. I don't know. Maybe they'll win
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: them all again. Maybe they'll do it again. And that's
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: that's a big Mike Vrabel thing, you know, and that's
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: what the Mike Vrabel Patriots have become known for. You
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: don't want to play them in your place because they
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: they know how to prepare for a road game and
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: they're impossible to beat on the road.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: Who knows? Yeah.
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: Seems like a hard thing to. But not impossible. But
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: it was very impressive to go 9-0 on the road.
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: I don't know anybody that would say otherwise. Even Felger
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: and Mavs wouldn't poo-poo that.
- 1:27:48Speaker 8: Paul, I think some of these reasons you listed, though,
- 1:27:51Speaker 8: are to me why the underdog narrative is still alive.
- 1:27:54Speaker 8: You had all the fans, all the Patriot haters. No,
- 1:27:56Speaker 8: but I don't think the underdog thing is alive.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: I just think Patriots fans are trying to convince themselves
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: that they're underdogs still. That this is scrappy because they
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: like that role. The Patriots have been so successful in
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: that role. I think nationally, they're not considered an underdog. Here,
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: everybody considers them, it's only a three and a half
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: point spread. I would have thought it would have been great. Nationally,
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: no one's batting an eye that Seahawks are three and
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: a half point favorites against the Super Bowl team, the
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: team they played in the Super Bowl. I don't think
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: anybody's really, like, plus nothing. I don't think it's that
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: big of a deal.
- 1:28:27Speaker 8: See, nationally, I think there's more of a narrative that
- 1:28:30Speaker 8: pointed to the Patriots' easy schedule, didn't play quarterbacks.
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: You get to the Super Bowl, everyone wanted to see
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: New England.
- 1:28:36Speaker 8: If you are not from New England, not a Patriots fan,
- 1:28:38Speaker 8: and you were haunted by this, Tom Brady era, the dynasty, right?
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: Everyone was praying that they were going to go out
- 1:28:43Speaker 8: there and lay an egg, which is exactly what they did.
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: There were so many people... Doing the parade, the I
- 1:28:48Speaker 8: told you so, I told you so, the Patriots weren't anything.
- 1:28:51Speaker 8: That's what they wanted to see because they were running
- 1:28:54Speaker 8: with the week schedule. You didn't play anybody. You didn't
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: even have Bo Nix in the AFC Championship game, and
- 1:28:59Speaker 8: then they go out and lay the egg in the
- 1:29:00Speaker 8: Super Bowl. A lot of people felt like they were
- 1:29:02Speaker 8: proven right. I saw the narrative everywhere, and I think
- 1:29:05Speaker 8: that's why they could still lean into that underdog role
- 1:29:07Speaker 8: because a lot of people feel like the New England
- 1:29:09Speaker 8: Patriots were exposed for what– a certain percentage of fans
- 1:29:14Speaker 8: thought they were.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: I just think the team has dramatically improved over what...
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: That's no question. So I don't think they're underdogs.
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: They made some great defenses last year, too.
- 1:29:23Speaker 7: That's why I just always hate the schedule argument because
- 1:29:27Speaker 7: it's not that black and white.
- 1:29:28Speaker 6: They played some really bad teams that had great defenses.
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: But they're really bad teams, so they can't do anything
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: with their defenses.
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: Yeah, they couldn't score, but.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: And the Patriots didn't.
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: Really score in those games. But you're allowed to not
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: score because the other team can't get out of its
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: own way, and they're setting up points for you. Like, say,
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: Houston in the divisional round.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: Like, C.J.
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: Stroud just handing you seven points. Like, Denver in the
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: AFC Championship game, Jared Stigman just hands you seven points. Like,
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: they didn't really move the ball and score points in
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: those games, but it didn't matter because the other team
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: couldn't do anything. You know?
- 1:30:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: That's... That's what the haters would say. I just look
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: at the offense, to me, is so much more equipped.
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: And when I say that it's dramatically improved, I probably
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: overstate that. I think offensively they have a chance to
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: be much better with A.J. Brown and Romeo Dobbs than
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: they were with Stephon Diggs and Keyshawn Booty. Fred, don't
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: yell at me, but I think Romeo Dobbs and A.J.
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: Brown are better than Keyshawn Booty. I'm sorry. That's how
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: I feel. And I think they have a chance to
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: be a lot better, you know, offensively and not be
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: necessarily a team that needs this soft schedule to get by. Yeah.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: I mean, isn't Drake such an interesting part of this
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: because he did have such a efficient season last year,
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: completing those passes.
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: I'm not going to lie. I do worry about that.
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: You know, is it just, it seems impossible to expect
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: him to have a 70% completion percentage again, but he's
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: got better weapons. So like, where do we point the
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: finger on, if it doesn't get better, like you've got
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: better weapons, you know, you, we address the offensive line. We,
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: everybody's healthy. Those kinds of things. Like how much pressure
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: is on Drake man? You know, Paul mentioned too, like
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: if he has another great season, he's going to be
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: looking at 70 million a year. How much wiggle room
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: does he have this season with his performance? Can he
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: get to that point? Or could he with, a year
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: that feels more like he's falling back to the mean
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: and being a little bit more, you know, not maybe 68% of.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: His path, you know, one last thing, like they are
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: underdogs tomorrow night. I'm talking about, they're not underdogs for
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: the season. Like, I don't think people look at them
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: as underdogs. I think every preseason thing I read has
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: them as a playoff team, and about half of them
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: have them as AFC East champs. And now there's plenty
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: of Buffalo love, too. I'm not going to pretend I
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: haven't seen that. A lot of people pick Buffalo to
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: win the division. A lot of people pick the Patriots
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: to win the division. But every one of them has
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: the Patriots in the playoffs. That's what I mean. Like,
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: they're not underdogs. Nationally, people think the Patriots are a
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: playoff team. Tomorrow night, I would agree the Patriots are
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: underdogs in that game.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I caught some of Jamie Erdahl this morning on
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: Good Morning Football doing exactly that. She was, like, debating
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: New England Buffalo for the division, and she actually went
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: with the Patriots with the division.
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen a lot of it both ways. Probably
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: a little more Buffalo love than Patriots, but I've seen
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: a lot of people like the Patriots in the division, too.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: No, I mean, Buffalo's been established, and, I mean, obviously,
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: Josh Allen. Like, I think you would expect that, you know,
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: Drake might fall back a little bit, and Josh Allen
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: has shown that he can consistently play. So I think
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: it's a really interesting battle this year with the changes
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: in Buffalo. on offense and, you know, I mean, changing
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: their defense too. I mean, that's really interesting to me
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: on the fly, trying to figure out, you know, not
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: only are you adjusting your defense, but the Patriots now
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: have A.J. Brown and Romeo Dobbs. I mean, it's just,
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: you know, more to think about. But those games are
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: going to be really, really exciting. I like when they're
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: kind of matched up too. It's not like, you know,
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: two in the last four weeks or whatever. Remember that
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: happened a few years ago where they played, like you
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: get one kind of in October and you get one
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: down towards the end. Good, Like, to me, good barometers
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: to check in and not, like, crammed in and you
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: got to get it all over with within three weeks
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: or something like that.
- 1:32:59Speaker 8: What almost feels unfair to this year's Patriots team is
- 1:33:01Speaker 8: that the first year of the Mike Vrabel era is
- 1:33:03Speaker 8: just everything goes right. You know, it sets the bar
- 1:33:06Speaker 8: so high. And, you know, I think that's what I
- 1:33:08Speaker 8: was pointing to. It seems like you were talking more
- 1:33:09Speaker 8: about people who cover the sport. I was kind of
- 1:33:11Speaker 8: talking more about the casual fan who just wants to hate.
- 1:33:14Speaker 8: And they're pointing to Drake May. They're pointing to schedule.
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: You know what I mean? I think that's where.
- 1:33:19Speaker 8: If that, if that cliche, the, you know, they're going
- 1:33:21Speaker 8: to be better, but they regress schedule wise, statistically that
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: that's where those haters are still going to be jumping
- 1:33:26Speaker 8: for joy.
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: If they see some of that, it's just.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: Like, where does it land?
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: You know, I don't care about those people as I've
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: made clear on this show many times.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: Yeah. It's a, no, it's a really interesting year. I mean, that's,
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: I'm just excited to get going and you start getting
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: like real answers. Cause we sit here and speculate all
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: we want about how it's going to look and how
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: the impact of the changes are, are, are going to be. But, um,
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: you know, as we get the ready guys, like, You
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: look back on this offseason, if there's one thing you
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: kind of wish they did, what might it be? Pass rush.
- 1:33:55Speaker 7: Retain, like, some of those guys from the pass rush
- 1:33:58Speaker 7: and the deal, like the Tongas.
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: I would have been more interested in a guy like
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: Jalen Phillips on the market. You know, someone that could
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: come in and give them some juice off the edge.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: You know, just a pass rusher. I think they sort
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: of let that area. Now, you can't fix everything. I'm
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: not killing them for it. You can't do everything. in
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: one off season, two off seasons, whatever. But I think
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: that's an area that lacks right now.
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: I think it's, I mean, we do this for our job,
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: of course, and we talk about it constantly. And so
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: that's just, what's like frustrating a little bit. It's like
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: the slow motion train wreck that you're watching. And it's like,
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: this is a great draft class, you know, and I
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: love Ackis and, you know, I'm excited to see how
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: he develops, but it just feels like they're one guy
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: short right now. And, you know, even the move with
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: Draymond Jones to get back to, you know, me assessing
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: players in the locker room, He's like a defensive lineman.
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: He's like a stout dude. He's not one of those long, lanky, bendy,
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: rusher kind of type guys. He looks like a guy
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: who's going to set the edge, but you're not going
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: to ask him to be too speedy. So I'm interested
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: to see how they pull it all together and how
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: aggressive they have to be.
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: Or maybe even swapping what they did in the draft
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: and taking one of the edge rushers at the end
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: of the first round and then going for depth tackle
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: in the second round.
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: Now that changes, you probably would have waited even longer
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: to get the title because Loma was the last quote
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: unquote quality tackle.
- 1:35:21Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: But maybe if you did it that way, you know,
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: cause you're not going to, the way it looks right now,
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: you're not going to get much out of Loma unless someone,
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: you know, gets hurt up front. And, maybe you would
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: be better served with a guy who could contribute right
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: away as a pass rusher.
- 1:35:37Speaker 8: See, to me, that definitely, if you're thinking about the
- 1:35:40Speaker 8: 2026 Patriots, you like to see that. The Lomo pick
- 1:35:43Speaker 8: felt more like an investment in Drake May long-term, though
- 1:35:46Speaker 8: just focusing on getting him up front.
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: So that's where I don't have any problem with that.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: That's what they did, no doubt. And wouldn't want to
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: change any of that.
- 1:35:52Speaker 8: I think it certainly is pass rusher, but outside of that,
- 1:35:55Speaker 8: maybe in hindsight, nailing a couple more of those one-year
- 1:35:59Speaker 8: contracts like they did a year ago, but it's a
- 1:36:02Speaker 8: pretty complete roster when you think of the top end
- 1:36:05Speaker 8: and the starters.
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: That's, I mean, it's hard to nitpick.
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: And I mean, even like, I'm not going to dock
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: them on tight end. Cause they had Julian Hill, you know,
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: this guys get hurt.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: What are you going to do?
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: But I do think past rusher and, and it still
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: seems like they're searching a linebacker to bringing in a
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: lot of new faces about the guy, uh, Moose out
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: from New York that knows that course that he loved. And,
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: you know, so maybe they see some, you know, potential
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: in these guys. That's my biggest hope is that some
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: of these late arrivals can actually, you know, carve out
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: some roles on this team. But let's see. Any email?
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: No email still. Nobody loves us. No games today.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: What else are you guys excited for this weekend with
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: the first slate of games? Why don't you turn it
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: off and plug it back in as we get going.
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: Does that work?
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: Yeah, because we get to watch some football here on Sunday.
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: There are some interesting games, not the least of which
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: is the one right after the Patriots. I think Rams-Niners
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: on Thursday night in Australia. And then Buffalo-Houston, I think,
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: stands out to me as a game I'm interested in
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: watching on Sunday.
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: Getting our game out of the way on Wednesday and
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: just having.
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: A Red Zone Sunday to start.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: It's going to be glorious.
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: Alex, there's nothing better than Red Zone Sundays.
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: Now, will you lock in on Red Zone if there's
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: one really good game on? Yeah.
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: I mean, the only time I generally change it is if, like,
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: you're in a two-minute situation and the game's on the line,
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: I'll go on because I want to watch. But usually
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: Red Zone watches that whole game anyway.
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: So you can kind of do it. So then I
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: just play it whatever game is ahead, whatever channel is ahead.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: But yeah, I just think the red zone and I'm
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: telling you full disclosure, I was the biggest hater. I
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: didn't understand it. Like, what are you doing? That makes
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: no sense. And then I watched it once and I
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: was like. I totally get it.
- 1:37:56Speaker 6: Oh, this was actually made for me.
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: Unbelievable. And it was made with me in mind.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:38:00Speaker 8: Alex, big red zone guy. I will say though, like
- 1:38:03Speaker 8: mid season outside of Patriot stuff, right? Say Patriots playing
- 1:38:06Speaker 8: on Thursday.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: I would have to watch the Patriots game for sure.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: That'd be different.
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: Without a doubt that takes priority, but you're sitting there
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: at a one o'clock slate. You're watching red zone.
- 1:38:15Speaker 8: I would say maybe once or twice a season I
- 1:38:16Speaker 8: like to mix it up and just go watch a
- 1:38:18Speaker 8: game and understand how it fully unfolds.
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: You know, lock in. That's what I have to do.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: By the way, the spread's down to three according to ESPN.
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: There we go. Is that good or bad for us?
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: That's good. That means contrary.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: To popular opinion.
- 1:38:30Speaker 6: People think the Patriots are good by some.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Logic I think they're good I mean what are we
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: gonna do uh Got some emails coming in. I want to.
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: Get to this red zone. Get the email situated.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: Get ready.
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: Try not to misread it like you did the read.
- 1:38:49Speaker 10: I will.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: I won't read it.
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: That's all it was.
- 1:38:51Speaker 8: I like a little change up. I like to just
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: throw a little change up in there. Go watch a
- 1:38:54Speaker 8: standalone football game, right? That's not in prime time. Maybe
- 1:38:57Speaker 8: there's a great mid-season matchup like you get Mahomes. That
- 1:39:00Speaker 8: would probably be in prime time. So you get what
- 1:39:01Speaker 8: I'm saying, though.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: A nice, good– No, because this guy is like a
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: beautiful mind where he can like deconstruct the red zone
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: and then have– consistent timelines of each game in his
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: head that he can access at any moment. Like, well,
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: for example, you remember in that second quarter drive, I'm like,
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: what are you talking about?
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: We were watching red zone.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: They flashed.
- 1:39:18Speaker 7: That's so impressive. Like you're not a two screen, three
- 1:39:21Speaker 7: screen guy. Like you are anticipating with the clicker. Just like,
- 1:39:24Speaker 7: all right, switch back, switch back to this one.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: That's why I do have a magician elite. Clicker skills,
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: Elite clicker skills. But Red Zone, there's no clicking necessary. Like,
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: all of the games are there for you. If you want, like, seriously,
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: on this first Sunday.
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: I know, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:39:41Speaker 7: I'm surprised you don't have one screen dedicated to the
- 1:39:43Speaker 7: Red Zone and then other ones that you are doing
- 1:39:46Speaker 7: the clicking around.
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: There's no need for that, Alex.
- 1:39:49Speaker 7: I know.
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: That's the beauty of the Red Zone is you don't
- 1:39:51Speaker 4: need to click around. The only drawback of the Red
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: Zone is when I'm, like, getting my food or whatever,
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: and I have to actually see it. I'm missing it.
- 1:39:59Speaker 6: I'm missing it.
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: It's just a donut hole in that timeline.
- 1:40:02Speaker 6: Bring the screen to the kitchen.
- 1:40:04Speaker 8: The first Octobox of the season is always a visual.
- 1:40:07Speaker 10: Oh, man.
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: Hate the Octobox.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: Too many.
- 1:40:09Speaker 9: Hate the Octobox.
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: How could you hate the Octobox? You can't see anything.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's not like they stand up for long, though.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: They show you everything, so.
- 1:40:14Speaker 6: You can't see anything.
- 1:40:14Speaker 9: You can't read this, man.
- 1:40:15Speaker 6: You can't read this man.
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: I'm learning that quickly. You cannot read him. I generally
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: don't like the split stuff. I mean, if it's just
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: like two games at once, that's fine. But when they
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: start getting to four and eight.
- 1:40:26Speaker 8: Wait, but that's the beauty because then you have control
- 1:40:28Speaker 8: of your eyes. You don't have to use a clicker.
- 1:40:30Speaker 8: You have control of your eyes. Oh, I'm choosing this one.
- 1:40:31Speaker 6: You don't like picture-picture. You want to switch it.
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: I mean, I used it.
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: Jarvis. I used picture-in-picture, but I'm a big last guy.
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: The last button is revolutionary.
- 1:40:40Speaker 6: I don't remember the last time I hit that button.
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: You never hit the last one?
- 1:40:44Speaker 6: I don't remember the last time I did. But I
- 1:40:47Speaker 6: don't have cable like you do anymore.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: How do you change the channels?
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: You change the channels with a remote? Oh, so you're
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: always streaming. So you live like animals. You can't change
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: the channel.
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: I really live like an animal because I'm lucky if
- 1:41:00Speaker 7: I even pay for the streaming site.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: Press that back button this week, Alex.
- 1:41:05Speaker 6: That's my illegal activity.
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: I have a man against the streaming services. Not because
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: of the broadcast. The broadcasts are fine. Whatever. I just
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: need to change channels. I'm just watching one game. I
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: need to change it. You see it a lot in
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: the winter.
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: You've got Celtics-Bruins saying that that last button is the
- 1:41:20Speaker 8: best invention of all time.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: Or whatever random sitcom I happen to be watching.
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: Paul came in last week to ask.
- 1:41:27Speaker 6: Us if we were watching a show. And I was like.
- 1:41:30Speaker 7: It was one of the network cable television shows. You're like,
- 1:41:34Speaker 7: are you guys watching this on, I don't know, ABC
- 1:41:36Speaker 7: or CBS?
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: I don't know. I think it was Furious. That was
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: on Netflix.
- 1:41:41Speaker 6: No, that's not the one.
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: I asked Mike if he had watched Netflix.
- 1:41:43Speaker 7: You specifically asked and you named a network. And I
- 1:41:46Speaker 7: was like, Paul would be in here asking.
- 1:41:48Speaker 8: Paul, I'm going to unpack this for a second. When
- 1:41:49Speaker 8: I'm in sports mode, I'm in sports mode. You can
- 1:41:51Speaker 8: go from a sitcom.
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: To a game.
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: I'm sorry. I have to interrupt you. It hurts a
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: little more when it comes from Alex. I'm just saying.
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: Everybody else can make fun of me. When Alex makes
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: fun of me, it hurts just a little bit more.
- 1:42:00Speaker 6: But I do it out of love, too.
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: You know when I press the back button last?
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: She says it so dismissively, too.
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: Never when we need to go back to the main menu.
- 1:42:10Speaker 6: It was college.
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: I dabbled in college.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: Let's do an email. Dan from Maine, thank you for
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: your kind words to me, but he'd love to hear
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: from each of you. Do you think this game, win
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: or lose, could have an impact on the outcome of
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: the entire season? I know it's still very early, but
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: with this being a Super Bowl rematch this soon, I
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: feel like it could really set the tone for the team.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: If they do lose, do you worry that it could
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: create a feeling in the locker room that they're still
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: not quite at Seattle's level? Or is it too early
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: in the season for the result of one game to
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: have that kind of impact?
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: Can I give you the ultimate Homer take?
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:42:43Speaker 4: I think if they win, I think it could have
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: a huge impact on the season. If they lose, I
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: don't think it's that big a deal.
- 1:42:50Speaker 6: I mean, look at how the season started last year.
- 1:42:52Speaker 7: The first three games, you know?
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: I think if they got blistered tomorrow night, it could
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: impact the season. I'm not expecting that. I think it's
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: going to be a good game. If they lost, kind
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: of like a Super Bowl redux, I think that could
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: have lasting impressions.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: It would be hard to see, like, I don't know,
- 1:43:13Speaker 7: just knowing the guys in that locker room and the
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: types of, like, players and professionals they are, it's hard
- 1:43:18Speaker 7: to see, like, a loss or two getting them off
- 1:43:22Speaker 7: the rails early to start the season. I think they
- 1:43:25Speaker 7: will retain some of the power of friendship. They've returned, like,
- 1:43:29Speaker 7: enough rah-rah type guys that, I don't know, I just
- 1:43:33Speaker 7: think they're Or mentally mature.
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: I do think you don't want to walk out of
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: this game with the same laundry list of problems that
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: you had in the Super Bowl. Maybe if you can
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: at least fix a couple of those problems and maybe
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: put some points up early and it's a little closer
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: and you feel like you put them in a position
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: where they had to play good. I never felt like
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: they got to that point. They never put any pressure
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: on the Seahawks. Can you put any pressure on the Seahawks?
- 1:43:54Speaker 8: I feel like I'm running the risk here of using
- 1:43:55Speaker 8: another term that Paul may not like. It's not a
- 1:43:58Speaker 8: conference measuring stick. It is what it really, Oh, you're
- 1:44:00Speaker 8: okay with that.
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: I agree. I don't think it is.
- 1:44:04Speaker 6: Can't put them in a box.
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: He's like a knuckleball. It hurts when she makes fun
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: of it.
- 1:44:09Speaker 8: It was out of love, but that's really what it
- 1:44:11Speaker 8: feels like. It's, it's an out of conference measuring stick
- 1:44:13Speaker 8: game where let's see what we got. Let's see where
- 1:44:16Speaker 8: we're at compared to that super bowl less than a
- 1:44:18Speaker 8: year ago. That's the last time we saw this Patriot
- 1:44:20Speaker 8: scene with stars on the field.
- 1:44:21Speaker 9: Right?
- 1:44:21Speaker 8: So it's, But outside of that, you're playing not with
- 1:44:25Speaker 8: house money, because, again, you're not the dog, but it's
- 1:44:30Speaker 8: not a conference game.
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: That's a big thing for me. Yeah, I mean, for
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: all of my talk about not being, like, they're not expected.
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: Most people don't expect them to go to Seattle and win.
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: So I think it could be a huge lift for
- 1:44:40Speaker 4: the team if they do. I don't think it's that
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: big a deal if they don't. I think it's early
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: in the season.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: Alex is right.
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: You know, the one and two last year, they just,
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: you know, When was the last time we had a
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: good season when we lost the opener?
- 1:44:54Speaker 7: And that second loss, if it was going to go
- 1:44:56Speaker 7: off the rails, it was going to go off the
- 1:44:58Speaker 7: rails after playing Pittsburgh.
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: I do feel if they just get waxed tomorrow night
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: and it's not competitive again like the Super Bowl, that
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: could leave some marks. But I don't expect that. A
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: little trivia here.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: I'm going to recuse myself because I know the answer.
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: But New England doesn't play in Seattle very often. This
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: is from Sean.
- 1:45:20Speaker 5: Sure.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: When was the last time the Patriots won in the
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: Emerald City?
- 1:45:26Speaker 4: In Seattle. Did they lose that Cam Newton game?
- 1:45:29Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: Yeah, so probably the game that you're... Your favorite game.
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: Probably 08.
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: 08, yeah.
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: Yeah, that was the last one.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: What was the score?
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: No idea, but Deion Branch had a huge game for Seattle.
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: He did, 24-21.
- 1:45:44Speaker 4: Who was the QB?
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: Matt Castle. Matt Castle. And who scored?
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: The winning drive.
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: Sammy Morris.
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: Come on, tap into that thing. What was the name
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: of the stadium? Questfield. Now Lumenfield.
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a cool... Welcome to Lumen. Not to
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: overplay my Seattle fandom. I didn't go as a Seattle fan,
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: but I thought it was a good environment. I haven't
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: been to a lot of NFL stadiums like Paul has.
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: We've seen multiple Super Bowls, wins, losses. You probably lose try.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: There was probably even a tie in there somewhere. It's true.
- 1:46:16Speaker 4: No, I don't think I saw a tie.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: I think my stadium visits are limited to the old
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: piece of crap San Diego Qualcomm Stadium San Francisco twice,
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: and Seattle twice. I don't think I've been to any
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: other NFL stadiums other than this one.
- 1:46:29Speaker 8: I always, as a kid, I wanted to walk those
- 1:46:32Speaker 8: spiral ramps so bad in San Diego.
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: I don't know what it was. It was probably a
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: miserable experience. But there was something about it that I
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: just wanted to walk them. I don't know why. It
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: was funny. I went there. I've told this story before,
- 1:46:42Speaker 4: but you haven't heard it, Jack.
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: So it's new to you. But when I went to that,
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: I got a playoff ticket in the 06 game, and
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: I I had tickets. It was field level. And I
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: was trying to go in the loge and I had
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: had a few cocktails, a few Bud Lights. And the
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: guy's like, no, you got to go down the stairs
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: and go around. And I'm like, they're messing with me. Like,
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: they know I'm a Patriots fan. They're trying to send
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: me to like some, you know, and then I walked
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: out into like this tunnel.
- 1:47:07Speaker 4: I don't know why the rest of the country doesn't
- 1:47:08Speaker 4: like Patriots fans.
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: And then I come out of the tunnel and I'm like,
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: holy crap, the field's.
- 1:47:14Speaker 4: Like right here.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: It was like realizing how close I was actually going
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: to be for the game, which was, you know, one
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: of my greatest fan experiences of my life. But, No,
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: that stadium was a dump. But Patriot fans took it
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: over in 2014. That was pretty cool. I went there
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: a bunch. Man.
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: Is Seattle as loud as people say? It really is?
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: I thought it was.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: I thought it was. I mean, like I said, no, wait.
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: They were out of the playoffs, and the guy's going,
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: it starts in the huddle. They're yelling at Matt Castle.
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: Who cares?
- 1:47:39Speaker 4: No one's watching this game.
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: But they're passionate there, and I'm sure they're going to
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: be rabid.
- 1:47:44Speaker 8: Speaking of Seattle, Paul, I mean, as a fan, when
- 1:47:47Speaker 8: Cam Newton declared he was back, I mean, I was
- 1:47:49Speaker 8: fired up.
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: Well, what were your thoughts at that time?
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: Fool's gold.
- 1:47:55Speaker 4: And it was funny because someone on Twitter said that
- 1:47:58Speaker 4: that game came up. Someone had a highlight clip of that.
- 1:48:03Speaker 4: And I just remember them chasing two scores the whole
- 1:48:06Speaker 4: fourth quarter and he kind of got hot. And then
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: all of a sudden Seattle didn't score once and the
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: Patriots had a chance to steal it at the end.
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: I didn't think there was anything that they did in
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: that game that was sustainable the way that like Edelman
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: was just pulling these passes in out of nowhere like
- 1:48:23Speaker 4: Edelman like 150 yards in that game that was his
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: last hurrah and someone attributed a call like that I
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: said that the Patriots wouldn't be able to afford Cam
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: Newton they wouldn't be able to pay him At the
- 1:48:33Speaker 4: end of the year, I was like, I was never
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: interested in resigning. Now, Newton came back, if you remember.
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: Briefly, yeah.
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: Like, the next year, he was in camp, and that's
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: when Mac Jones beat him out for the job, and
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: they cut him. But I never was in favor of
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: giving him an extension.
- 1:48:48Speaker 9: No.
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: And someone, of course, assigned that to me. Like, I
- 1:48:54Speaker 4: didn't think anything about that game was sustainable. I thought,
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: that was a bad passing game. They had, it was
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: a bad passing game in every other game, but that one.
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, that team had like some weird opportunities.
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: They were like against Miami. They could have won against Buffalo.
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: They were kind of driving and then Cam Newton fumbled it.
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: I think Buffalo, they had a chance to tie it
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: and they fumbled, you know.
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: There were a day, but what it was talking to
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: somebody about that year, the other day of just no
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: fans and like waiting around for Cam Newton to do
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: his media availability via zoom or whatever. And it's, he's
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: like an hour late and you know, is this, I
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: don't know.
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: Would he still put the outfits on for the zoom?
- 1:49:32Speaker 6: Uh, yeah.
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: Oh yeah. He's still got the hats on and the
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: glasses and the whole, the whole thing. It was, you know,
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: it's like, and everybody's at their house, like waiting to
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: eat dinner and wait for Cam Newton.
- 1:49:41Speaker 4: I think in that team went seven and nine. I
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: think that team was worse than the teams that went
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: four and 13.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. They were bad.
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: I mean, That was the thing I noticed.
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: I mean, the fun thing about like my time here
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: is I got Tom Brady in year one. So you
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: got to see like this is what it's supposed to
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: look like. And then it was like Cam Newton, you know,
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: rookie Mac Jones, outside rookie Jared Stidham in 19.
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: So you just I've gotten a large cross section of
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: watching quarterbacks in training camp. And the thing with Cam
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: Newton I always felt like was he would be late
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: to see it. so he'd try to throw it a
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: little harder.
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: Yeah. You know?
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: And he'd reach back, and it was like, man, he's
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: launching some missiles.
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: He also threw like he was throwing gallons of paint.
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: Scam Newton with the dollar sign. Heave-ho.
- 1:50:26Speaker 4: And I was a huge Cam Newton guy, by the way.
- 1:50:28Speaker 7: I was a big Cam Newton guy as a personality
- 1:50:31Speaker 7: until he was me to Drake last year, and now
- 1:50:34Speaker 7: I don't care what happens to you.
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: I didn't know him as a person, so I had
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: nothing to base that on. But when he was with
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: the Panthers... That was special. Watching him early in his career,
- 1:50:46Speaker 4: he had probably two or three seasons that were as
- 1:50:49Speaker 4: good as any quarterback has had.
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: Another guy who's like all-world physique.
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: I mean, just amazing. Can I just ask?
- 1:50:57Speaker 6: What month is he on the calendar?
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: Alex, if you spoke.
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: Like that about what the players look like, how would
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: you think that you'd be received?
- 1:51:05Speaker 6: My Twitter followers would be a lot less respectful than
- 1:51:07Speaker 6: they are.
- 1:51:09Speaker 4: I don't think that's appropriate talk.
- 1:51:10Speaker 6: It's not.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: I just appreciate it.
- 1:51:11Speaker 6: So there's a double standard, Paul, that I just can't
- 1:51:13Speaker 6: partake in.
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: It is a double standard.
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: It's all in how it relates to sports.
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: That's true. I'm not saying it's attractive.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: I'm just saying it's aesthetically pleasing.
- 1:51:22Speaker 6: Then again, it would be weird if I did it
- 1:51:25Speaker 6: and you. It's kind of funny and endearing.
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: It's totally different. Paul, a little trivia here from Curtis
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: in St. Louis. How many times have the Patriots played
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: in the NFL's opening game prior to tomorrow night and what?
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: their record in those games. Bonus points if you can
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: name the opponents in the final score. He's got four
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: of them.
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: I was going to say, can you give me the four?
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: Okay, so.
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: I'm going to say 0-4 against Indianapolis. 0-5 against Oakland.
- 1:51:54Speaker 13: Ding!
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: Whatever the year was against Kansas City. Say 17? Yeah,
- 1:52:02Speaker 4: got three of them.
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: One more time.
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: They won a Super Bowl, raised the banner.
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: Pittsburgh? Yes.
- 1:52:10Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: 15.
- 1:52:11Speaker 12: 15.
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: You want to take a shot at any scores? Okay, 27-24,
- 1:52:17Speaker 4: they beat Indy.
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: Boom. Yes.
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: They beat Oakland by like a weird score.
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: It was like 30-19.
- 1:52:25Speaker 11: No, 30-20.
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: 30-20.
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: Kansas City was a blowout. They lost like 42-27.
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: Exactly the score. 33-3? Pittsburgh? No, no, this is a
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: closer one.
- 1:52:41Speaker 11: 28-21?
- 1:52:41Speaker 12: Yes.
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: Paul, what did you have for lunch three days ago?
- 1:52:47Speaker 4: Pork products. He's got nothing. He's got nothing on that, though.
- 1:52:50Speaker 4: What's a 33-3 game I'm thinking of? Didn't they beat
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: Pittsburgh in the first game of the year one year, 33-3?
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: We have to check on that. That's insane.
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: We have to check on that.
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: 28-21.
- 1:52:58Speaker 6: I'll trust your gut. Take your word for it.
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: Darius from Louisville just wanted to say let's go. But jokingly,
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: Pauly always looks so tall next to Evan and Fred,
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: but Jack makes him look normal. It's not short. Past Nation, baby,
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: stand up.
- 1:53:12Speaker 12: I know.
- 1:53:12Speaker 6: I wish I was sitting next to Jack.
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: I would look so little.
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: Fred is one of the few people in the building
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: that I am taller than because I'm pretty short. Mike
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: towers over me. Mike's a tall guy, though. Forget about Jack.
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: I'm a solid 5'11 and a half.
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: I'm not that tall. You're not over six feet.
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: I've always been 5'11 and a half.
- 1:53:31Speaker 12: Always.
- 1:53:31Speaker 4: Like the doctor messages you. No matter what you measure.
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: But you're the height that you can say you're six feet.
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: I know, but that's why I prefer to say 5'11
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: and a half just to throw people off because.
- 1:53:39Speaker 4: Everyone would be like, oh, I'm six feet. But I
- 1:53:40Speaker 4: think it's funny when I'm like, no, I'm only 5'11.
- 1:53:42Speaker 4: It's like in high school, I was listed at 5'6,
- 1:53:45Speaker 4: 130 my sophomore year. And then we got a new
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: coach the next year who believed in bumping all those up.
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: In shoes.
- 1:53:50Speaker 4: Suddenly I was 5'10, 180.
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: You know what I was? I was 6'1, 210 in
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: the program, in your program.
- 1:53:56Speaker 8: And you never asked to change those. Keep that as is.
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: The 5'6, 130 was accurate.
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:54:02Speaker 4: That was my sophomore.
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: I didn't wait. Would you play it, Jack? What was
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: that one?
- 1:54:07Speaker 4: I'll tell you what. Who's asking?
- 1:54:10Speaker 8: After Super Bowl Sunday, the weigh-in, I had a– let's
- 1:54:13Speaker 8: just know it was so bad after Super Bowl Sunday
- 1:54:15Speaker 8: and I think 23.
- 1:54:16Speaker 4: We weigh in before every lift. Right after lift, O-line coach,
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: come see me.
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: It was that bad. It was that bad.
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: It was that bad.
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: Sloppy?
- 1:54:27Speaker 4: Oh, I mean, I had the whole spread. Then you
- 1:54:30Speaker 4: had the whole spread weighing at 6 a.m. the next day.
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: Toast. You're not setting yourself up for success.
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: Absolutely toast.
- 1:54:36Speaker 6: But you probably lost 10 pounds by dinner.
- 1:54:39Speaker 8: See, the problem was I didn't stop. Okay. Some people,
- 1:54:43Speaker 8: you know, I had a bad meal yesterday.
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: Can't stop, won't stop. Stop won't stop.
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: Screw you. We only got five minutes left here, but
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: I'd really like to actually get your take.
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: On this, Paul. It's an interesting journalism question. Nice deep
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: topic to end the show.
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: It's a journalism question. I think it's interesting. Matt from Wichita.
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: I understand that as fellow members of the media, you
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: have to be careful not to step on any toes here.
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: But I'm curious to hear some of Patriot's unfiltered crew's
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: thoughts on the pointed question asked to Gonzalez while the
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: negotiations were happening. I do not like when journalists ask
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: questions like, do you want to be traded, for example.
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: They know and everyone knows he is not going to
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: say yes to that question, and a straight, no, I
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: want to stay here, could be used against him in negotiation.
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: It is frustrating when questions like this are asked with
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: the intent to read between the lines from the start.
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: How do you, as journalists, balance questions that have the
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: potential to draw attention slash create stories while remaining fair
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: to the player, and do any of you also have
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: problems with how the Gonzo narrative was spun out at times? Paul,
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: I think you're the only, well, maybe Jack, too, and
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: actually Alice. I guess I'm the only non-trained journalist here,
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: but you're an old school guy.
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: I don't like gotcha journalism. I don't like when people
- 1:55:52Speaker 4: ask questions to try to catch a guy. I think
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: the Gonzalez thing, I thought, was handled incredibly well.
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: On all sides.
- 1:56:06Speaker 4: I thought the media did a good job of asking
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: all the right questions. I strongly disagree that do you
- 1:56:11Speaker 4: want to be traded is a bad question. It's not
- 1:56:13Speaker 4: even a tough question. Like, you ask questions that you
- 1:56:18Speaker 4: want the answers to. That's actually a pretty straightforward question.
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: There's no nuance there, really. How a guy answers a
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: question can tell you oftentimes more than what he actually says.
- 1:56:31Speaker 4: We had a talk about this this morning. I sensed
- 1:56:33Speaker 4: a growing frustration the last couple of press conferences with
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: the way Mike Vrabel was answering some of the Gonzalez questions,
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: because I felt like Vrabel himself had grown tired of
- 1:56:43Speaker 4: the ongoing negotiations. Again, my words, not Mike's. I felt
- 1:56:49Speaker 4: he was telling you, enough already. Let's get this signed.
- 1:56:52Speaker 4: I don't want to deal with this anymore. It's time
- 1:56:55Speaker 4: to play real games. I sort of sense that, and
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: I think it's It's part of the job. If you
- 1:57:03Speaker 4: don't like those kinds of questions, then I would say
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: you don't want to be in the business. You don't
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: want to do this for a living.
- 1:57:09Speaker 7: It's like a damned if you do, damned if you
- 1:57:11Speaker 7: don't kind of thing. Because if you don't ask those questions,
- 1:57:13Speaker 7: you're going to be labeled as like a fanboy or soft.
- 1:57:17Speaker 4: I'll give you an example. Like the gotcha thing. If
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: I went to say to Christian Gonzalez, Christian, do you
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: think the Patriots are cheap as an organization? That's a
- 1:57:29Speaker 4: cheap shot question. That's trying to get him to say
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: something because you want him to say it. And no
- 1:57:34Speaker 4: matter what he says, it's not going to be the
- 1:57:38Speaker 4: right thing. Like, asking the guy if he wants to
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: be traded or, you know, are you frustrated by the
- 1:57:44Speaker 4: lack of movement in the negotiations? Those are perfectly fair
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: questions during a contract extension talk. Like, you know, what
- 1:57:53Speaker 4: were you... You know, Robert Kraft deemed this the.
- 1:57:57Speaker 4: The offer was the highest paid corner. Do you see
- 1:58:00Speaker 4: it that way? Those are perfectly fair questions. And those
- 1:58:04Speaker 4: were the questions that were asked to Christian Gonzalez throughout
- 1:58:06Speaker 4: the summer. What I would say that I really agree
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: with where I think Gonzalez was most impressive was just
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: how willing he was to talk. We heard from him
- 1:58:16Speaker 4: three or four times.
- 1:58:17Speaker 7: Christian and Keyshawn Booty I think should be athlete case studies.
- 1:58:24Speaker 6: If you're in that situation, that's how you should deal
- 1:58:26Speaker 6: with it. Especially Booty.
- 1:58:27Speaker 7: I don't know if any of you guys saw his
- 1:58:29Speaker 7: texans introductory presser.
- 1:58:31Speaker 4: I saw i saw parts of it i thought it
- 1:58:33Speaker 4: was better with in that than he was here in
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: the summer i think here in the summer you could
- 1:58:38Speaker 4: clearly tell yeah enough already trade me right now for
- 1:58:41Speaker 4: sure he didn't.
- 1:58:41Speaker 7: Say those weren't the words right yeah and then in
- 1:58:44Speaker 7: houston just like totally classy just i agree this is
- 1:58:47Speaker 7: business love the kid yeah because.
- 1:58:50Speaker 4: Ravel had made a comment that said that he would
- 1:58:53Speaker 4: probably be inactive yeah right and Again, that's a perfectly
- 1:58:57Speaker 4: fair question for the Houston media to be asking him.
- 1:59:00Speaker 4: Your previous coach indicated that you would be inactive. Now,
- 1:59:04Speaker 4: as a reporter, are you hoping that he might say
- 1:59:06Speaker 4: something like that?
- 1:59:08Speaker 14: What?
- 1:59:08Speaker 4: Fiery? Yeah, you probably are because it makes it for
- 1:59:12Speaker 4: a better story. But it's a straightforward question and he
- 1:59:15Speaker 4: handled it. I think Alex nailed it. He handled it perfectly. No,
- 1:59:18Speaker 4: I understand what Mike is talking about.
- 1:59:21Speaker 8: I think you've got to remember, these journalists, they're not
- 1:59:23Speaker 8: serving the players or the coaches.
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:59:26Speaker 8: They're trying to get to the bottom of it for
- 1:59:29Speaker 8: clicks and their viewership and all that stuff. So they're
- 1:59:32Speaker 8: going to ask the tough questions. The biggest misnomer in
- 1:59:34Speaker 8: the business. What you're doing is hurting the team.
- 1:59:37Speaker 4: That's not the journalists concerned whether it helps or hurts
- 1:59:41Speaker 4: the team now you don't want to openly be doing
- 1:59:43Speaker 4: your job poorly but your job isn't to help the
- 1:59:46Speaker 4: team unfortunately that's what it's become is everybody's become a
- 1:59:51Speaker 4: cheerleader and that's why when my job that's why when
- 1:59:55Speaker 4: christian gonzalez it gets broken by a national.
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: Guy yeah okay All right, well, nothing says football season
- 2:00:02Speaker 2: like firing up the grill in the backyard and having
