Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: What's shaken Emily. Here, you're listening to five Minute Friday
- 0:23Speaker 1: from Hurdle, the last episode in what may have seemed
- 0:26Speaker 1: at one point to be a never ending season nineteen.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I started taking season breaks. God, I think I did
- 0:35Speaker 1: the show regularly for maybe three or four years until
- 0:39Speaker 1: I finally got to a point where I was like, Okay,
- 0:42Speaker 1: I need to take some time every now and again.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So this season went on much longer than anticipated. A
- 0:48Speaker 1: lot of irons in the fire, a lot of things happening.
- 0:51Speaker 1: But what happens now is that Hurdle will be offline
- 0:54Speaker 1: for two weeks. I may launch a special episode in
- 0:57Speaker 1: there to be determined, but I will be launching season
- 1:02Speaker 1: twenty and some changes for the show and coming back
- 1:04Speaker 1: with some exciting news to say the least, on November eleventh.
- 1:10Speaker 1: So for those of you that are longtime hurdlers, maybe
- 1:12Speaker 1: you're a new hurdler either or I'm grateful that you're here.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm excited to take you on this journey with me,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and I cannot wait to share more. I am also
- 1:24Speaker 1: leading into my favorite time of the year here in
- 1:26Speaker 1: New York. It is New York City Marathon Week. Next week,
- 1:29Speaker 1: the New York Marathon is next Sunday, November second, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: it is my favorite day to be a New Yorker.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Everyone comes together and is so happy and the vibes
- 1:40Speaker 1: are high, and I'm praying like many of you, for
- 1:42Speaker 1: good weather. And I also have many events happening throughout
- 1:47Speaker 1: the next week, So if you are local and you
- 1:49Speaker 1: wanna come hang out, make sure you're following along with
- 1:52Speaker 1: me over on Instagram where you can get all of
- 1:54Speaker 1: that information. Again, my handle just my name over at
- 1:58Speaker 1: Emily a Body and Hurdle as always is over at
- 2:01Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast for five Minute Friday this week, I want
- 2:05Speaker 1: to talk about being malleable and adaptable. I will never
- 2:09Speaker 1: forget choosing a major in college and thinking to myself, genuinely,
- 2:14Speaker 1: at age seventeen, how am I supposed to know what
- 2:17Speaker 1: I want to do with the rest of my life?
- 2:19Speaker 1: And luckily for me, I always wanted to be a writer.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I got into the field of journalism quite young, working
- 2:28Speaker 1: at the school paper and then the college paper, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: then pursuing internships and magazines and newspapers and digital and whatnot,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and it all kind of worked out for me. But
- 2:39Speaker 1: I think and know so many people right now, especially
- 2:44Speaker 1: that are similar in age to me in their thirties,
- 2:47Speaker 1: that are having this reckoning of sorts of maybe I
- 2:52Speaker 1: want to do something else, maybe there's more out for
- 2:55Speaker 1: me than what I started in And oftentimes that reckoning,
- 2:59Speaker 1: that thought process can be really scary, understandably so, But
- 3:04Speaker 1: you know what else is really scary doing something just
- 3:07Speaker 1: because you're afraid of starting over, sticking in the same lane,
- 3:12Speaker 1: on the same path, just because you're scared of the unknown.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, Clarity is always a good thing,
- 3:20Speaker 1: even if the clarity doesn't give you what it is
- 3:22Speaker 1: that you want. Learning what it is that you need
- 3:25Speaker 1: to know so that you can then make the choices
- 3:27Speaker 1: you need to make to move forward is so valuable period.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And so I bring up the topic of flexibility and
- 3:37Speaker 1: being malleable today because that is an opportunity. It is
- 3:43Speaker 1: an opportunity to do things differently. It is an opportunity
- 3:47Speaker 1: to try new things. It is an opportunity to start
- 3:50Speaker 1: over and in that process get to know yourself better.
- 3:56Speaker 1: When I started podcasting, I mean I didn't know the
- 3:58Speaker 1: first thing about podcasts. I asked as many people as
- 4:01Speaker 1: I could a series of questions until I knew enough
- 4:05Speaker 1: to just begin. And something that's really resonating with me
- 4:09Speaker 1: here is that if you do nothing, you have nothing
- 4:13Speaker 1: to work with. Yeah, so there is the paralysis that
- 4:18Speaker 1: comes with starting over and starting fresh, whether that be
- 4:21Speaker 1: in your work or perhaps with a new relationship. And
- 4:25Speaker 1: if you start to build it, then you can adapt
- 4:29Speaker 1: as you move in group. You don't get to where
- 4:31Speaker 1: you want to be by avoiding taking action altogether. You
- 4:36Speaker 1: take action and then you do something with it. And
- 4:39Speaker 1: if you are just frozen by the idea of starting
- 4:43Speaker 1: over or beginning again, then you're not doing yourself any favors.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I'm kind of rambling here a bit, and I think
- 4:50Speaker 1: that I often say that on five Minute Friday. But
- 4:53Speaker 1: this lesson this like start with what you have and
- 4:56Speaker 1: do the best you can with what you have. It
- 4:58Speaker 1: is so apt, polokable to so many avenues in life.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm not just talking about starting fresh in relationships or
- 5:05Speaker 1: with work. I'm also talking about starting fresh with your routines,
- 5:09Speaker 1: your habits, your wellness practices, your movement. Right why not you?
- 5:15Speaker 1: Why not? Today? So I'm asking you, my listener prompt
- 5:20Speaker 1: you this week. Where are you hesitating your fresh start?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Where could you be a little bit more flexible. What
- 5:30Speaker 1: is it that excites you right now? And would it
- 5:34Speaker 1: hurt you if you just began food for thought? And
- 5:38Speaker 1: now a listener question. Hey, Emily Stephanie from Ohio here.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Have been listening to the pod since COVID lockdown and
- 5:45Speaker 1: you've kept me company on many runs, walks and commutes.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Thank you for bringing your perspective to the masses and
- 5:51Speaker 1: keep it coming. There's always such powerful goodness in the
- 5:54Speaker 1: hurdle feed. I appreciate you. I wanted to ask a
- 5:57Speaker 1: listener question about dealing with disappointment after a big effort.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'm writing you the day after my third marathon, and
- 6:02Speaker 1: while I'm trying to be proud of the accomplishment, all
- 6:04Speaker 1: I can seem to feel is disappointed and embarrassed in
- 6:07Speaker 1: the outcome. I set an aggressive time goal and fell
- 6:09Speaker 1: short by significant a measure. In fact, this was my
- 6:12Speaker 1: worst time of all three races. I recognized there were
- 6:15Speaker 1: hurdles along the way. I trained fresh off of months
- 6:18Speaker 1: and months of downtime and planter fasciaitis. I know, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: know how that is. We had pouring rain and strong
- 6:23Speaker 1: wings on Rees Day and so on, but I know
- 6:24Speaker 1: from my training that the goal was in reach, so
- 6:26Speaker 1: that those facts feel like excuses. That brings me to
- 6:30Speaker 1: my question, how do you respond when you pour yourself
- 6:32Speaker 1: into an audacious goal, speak it to the world and
- 6:34Speaker 1: fall short. Thank you so much for everything you do,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and hope to keep hearing more from you. Stephanie, Stephanie, Stephanie, Stephanie,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I feel this in my bones. I hope that you
- 6:43Speaker 1: listened to my Chicago marathon recap because I really do
- 6:46Speaker 1: think that this can bring some perspectives, specifically to what
- 6:49Speaker 1: you are dealing with. I recognize and appreciate that we
- 6:53Speaker 1: don't work hard at something for it not to go
- 6:56Speaker 1: as we'd hoped, but especially when it comes to a
- 6:59Speaker 1: goal that requires so much opportunity cost, whether we're talking
- 7:03Speaker 1: about a marathon or something else. You have to find
- 7:06Speaker 1: joy in the journey and return to that joy and
- 7:10Speaker 1: understand that the journey is the destination. Now that sentence
- 7:16Speaker 1: that understanding it is not something that you can really
- 7:20Speaker 1: take solace in within the immediate time period after you
- 7:24Speaker 1: fall short of your goal. You have to feel your feelings.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It is completely understandable that you are feeling this way
- 7:31Speaker 1: one hundred percent, So know that You're not alone in that.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Feel your feelings, right on those feelings and utilize that
- 7:39Speaker 1: as your motivation to figure out what's next. I've said
- 7:44Speaker 1: this before. My dad asks me this question all the time.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Whenever something doesn't go as I'd hoped, or I'm experiencing
- 7:49Speaker 1: or really big letdown, he says, what's next? And sometimes
- 7:52Speaker 1: I want to like shove him to the side, and
- 7:55Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm not ready to answer that question yet.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But I can promise you that the journey is the
- 8:01Speaker 1: destination and setting your next big goal after a little
- 8:05Speaker 1: bit of downtime, that is going to be the thing
- 8:08Speaker 1: that helps you move on, that helps you graduate, that
- 8:11Speaker 1: helps you appreciate all of the effort and the good
- 8:15Speaker 1: things that came from that sixteen to twenty week experience
- 8:20Speaker 1: prepping for this really big day. And kudos to you.
- 8:24Speaker 1: You're recognizing that a lot of things didn't go as
- 8:26Speaker 1: you had hoped. The weather was hard, you came off
- 8:29Speaker 1: from downtime conquering a marathon after dealing with plantro fasciitis.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Again that if you know, you know situation, it's not easy.
- 8:36Speaker 1: So I want to commend you for your work. I
- 8:39Speaker 1: want you to be proud of the journey, and I
- 8:41Speaker 1: hope that moving forward, you can continue to find that
- 8:44Speaker 1: grace with yourself as you set your next big goal.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I'm always here to answer your listener questions and I
- 8:50Speaker 1: want them, so email me them over at Hello at
